The living room at PH90; a dining room with views as far as the eye can see

PH90 at 35 Hudson Yards

H

udson Yards made for a memorable photo shoot with actress Jessica Chastain on a gorgeous sunny June day. The two-time Academy Award nominee entered PH90 at 35 Hudson Yards (the tallest residential building at Hudson Yards) with a warm smile, introducing herself as if we didn’t already know the flame-haired actress. More petite in person than expected, Chastain wowed the team in the best of fall’s runway looks from Louis Vuitton, Dior and Dolce & Gabbana. Shooting inside the apartment’s luxe interiors as well as outdoors, with its panoramic southern views of New York City’s skyline, the team of photographer Sebastian Kim and stylist Sarah Gore Reeves worked to create memorable images. As fearless as the characters she inhabits, Chastain joked, “I’m about to die for fashion” as she posed against the railings of the show-stopping outdoor terrace, overlooking the entirety of southern Manhattan.

The stunning six bedroom/six-and-a-half bathroom apartment, currently for sale for $59 million, spans over 10,000 square feet and encompasses the entire 90th floor. With nearly 14-foot ceilings and French oak f loors, the apartment boasts two fireplaces, a private terrace, a library/office and home gym. The residence’s exteriors were designed by David Childs/SOM, while its interiors were masterminded by Tony Ingrao. Amenities include a Equinox Club and Spa with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, three on-premises restaurants and in-residence dining. In addition, residents have access to 22,000 square feet of luxurious private amenities, including a residents-only fitness center with a stretching and yoga studio, serene meditation room, business center and boardroom, elegant cocktail lounge and bar, screening room with wet bar, golf simulator lounge and a grand terrace and private dining room with catering services. 35hudsonyards.com ■

DUJOUR.COM

O

ur fall 2021 cover star is Golden Globe-award winning actress Jessica Chastain, photographed by Sebastian Kim at PH90 at Hudson Yards in New York City wearing some of fall’s most serious fashion looks. This September, Chastain will be seen in two major projects: the film The Eyes of Tammy Faye and the HBO series Scenes from a Marriage. We also spent time with actor Alessandro Nivola, star of The Sopranos film prequel The Many Saints of Newark, in theaters and on HBO Max October 1. From showcasing some of the best new Hollywood talents at the Cannes Film Festival (Stillwater’s Camille Cottin is front of mind) to speaking with Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman about her new Miss Dior campaign, our culture coverage has you covered. With so many countries now open to American tourists, we’re packing our bags and headed to Italy and France this fall. But if you aren’t ready to venture that far afield yet, we’ve got you covered: Boston is having a hospitality renaissance and fall is the ideal time for a visit. We always love collaborating with some of our favorite creatives, including photographers Victoria Stevens, Douglas Friedman and Jeffrey Westbrook, on celebrity fashion shoots, luxe interiors and stunning still-life photography, respectively. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we did producing it. Stay tuned for much more to come.

Roger Vivier debuts a new bag silhouette The new Viv’ Choc bag is a tribute to the French accessory house’s signature Choc heel, created in 1959. For this modern buckled silhouette, the brand’s creative director, Gherardo Felloni, was inspired by the minimalist shapes of the 1990s. The new curved buckle clasp makes a bold statement that perfectly complements the soft calfskin leather, inspired by horse bridles, saddlebags, reins and harnesses. A shoulder strap and side constructed with neatly folded flaps is elegant and timeless and seamlessly transitions from day to nighttime wear.

GUCCI virtually unveiled its fall collection to celebrate its centennial. The collection, Aria, features the past, present and future of the fashion house. “Gucci becomes for me a hacking lab made of incursions and metamorphoses,” says the brand’s creative director, Alessandro Michele. “An alchemical factory of contaminations where everything connects to anything. A place where thefts and explosive reactions happen, a permanent generator of sparkles and unpredictable desires.” This breakthrough collection pays homage to the iconic equestrian heritage of the brand while taking references from the era of Tom Ford and borrowing from French sister brand Balenciaga. ■

As Tom Ford Timepieces evolve from the N.001 and N.002 models, the brand introduces N.003, focusing the simplicity of the silhouette into a sporty timepiece. Without any numerals, the focus is on the case. “The N.003 exemplifies the craftsmanship and simplicity I was looking for in the next evolution of Tom Ford Timepieces,” says designer Tom Ford. “I wanted to bring the focus back to the elegance of the watch face by stripping back the numerals and emphasizing the clean, sophisticated design.” The watches are available in polished stainless steel with a black, white or chrome dial and the option of interchangeable straps in a variety of colors and materials.

ith great beauty all around, the French Riviera is the perfect place to celebrate film and fashion. Since 1998, one of the arbiters of great style, Swiss watch and jewelry house Chopard, has been a partner of the Cannes Film Festival. “Since that very first festival, I knew it would blossom into a beautiful relationship that would carry on for many years,” says Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele. “I’ve loved the cinema ever since I was young. Cinema makes people dream, and so do our jewelry creations.” Each year, except for 2020 when COVID-19 forced its cancellation, the Cannes Film Festival has hosted the biggest names in Hollywood and beyond. It’s the perfect

place for a jewelry house like Chopard to debut new over-the-top high jewelry creations that are meant to be showcased on the red carpet. “It’s the most famous red carpet in the world and is the perfect place to unveil our beautiful high jewelry creations from the Red Carpet Collection,” she explains. This July, the Festival was held two months late but was magical as always. “I think it was wonderful to reconnect in person with old friends that I haven’t seen in a long time, as well as meet new ones,” says Scheufele. “Being back in Cannes was truly special. It was such a great feeling to be surrounded by friends of the Maison. For some, this was their first event in a long time, and we wanted to really make an impression and bring some joy by hosting exceptional performances, fashion shows and showcasing fabulous jewels.”

These fantastical jewels were the perfect antidote to the past 18 months and delighted those who had the chance to see them up close. “I think, after the year we had, we all wanted an escape,” says Scheufele. “The Collection really captures that distant place—a paradise—that we dream of getting away to.” From exotic flowers to animals, the new collection is awash with color and whimsy but also boasts new modalities. “These pieces will transport you to another place and time,” she explains. “More than ever, we’ve mixed the most fabulous gemstones with new materials such as titanium and enamel.” Paradise was indeed found at Cannes this year. ■

Miss Natalie

Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman talks to DuJour from Australia about her newest Miss Dior fragrance campaign BY NATASHA WOLFF

FALL 2021

32

DUJOUR.COM

N

atalie Portman has been in Australia for much of the last 18 months filming Thor: Love and Thunder (out in 2022) and spending time in the great outdoors with her husband, dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied, and their two children. She’s also been busy filming the campaign for the newly retooled Miss Dior eau de parfum scent and bottle design. Since its inception in 1947, Miss Dior has been the iconic fragrance of the Dior Maison and one of its bestsellers. Since 2011, the Academy Awardwinning actress has been the face of the rosy Miss Dior scent, named after Catherine Dior, Christian’s sister and a French Resistance fighter during World War II. Portman’s femininity, confidence, love, energy and free-spiritedness have been hallmarks of the fragrance and its ad campaigns over the last 10 years. We talked with the actress about new beginnings, returning to nature and how her relationship with scent and beauty has evolved over the years. What are you looking forward to after a tough year? “I think we spent so much time virtually living that I’d love us all to get off our devices and appreciate the beauty of the real world around us.” What do you do to reconnect with nature? “I love going on walks in the mountains or on the beach. Working in Australia has been such a blessing because there is such insanely beautiful and diverse nature here.” How do you help protect nature in your own life? “Nature is such a blessing to our lives and, unfortunately, under such threat from the way we live. My decision to not eat animal products is part of my commitment to living in a way that’s consistent with my desire to be part of helping nature.” What was your first impression of the new Eau de Parfum? “It’s so fresh and f loral. It’s light at first, and then becomes more exuberant. It feels like a little cocoon smell.” What message does the scent convey? “It conveys happiness and confidence, and that’s what it is all about.” How would you describe the new bottle design? “It stays in the same spirit as the previous ones but even more precious, more elegant and couture. The bow is stunning, with incredible work on colors and technique from the Faure ateliers. You can see the savoir-faire that comes with this hand-tied bow. There’s more respect to the environment thanks to the reduction of glass.” Does this fragrance remind you of anything in particular, a specific moment or memory? “When I visited Grasse in the South of France with [perfumer] François Demachy, we witnessed the harvesting of the Grasse Rose, which is used to make Miss Dior, and it was a magical experience that helped me understand the art of what goes into making a perfume.”

As an actress, how has your character evolved through the years in each Miss Dior campaign? “I feel so lucky to have had the character evolve over the years as I do. She looks for love and finds it, and then continues to find ways to seek and express her joy, her passion and her pleasure.” You’ve been the face of Miss Dior since 2011, one of the most iconic scents of the House. What has this experience been like for you? “It’s been such a lucky experience. Dior really feels like a family and is a beautiful cooperation of hundreds of artists working together. The level of expertise and tradition is something I am so lucky to have gotten to witness and celebrate.” Who is the Miss Dior woman to you? “I think the Miss Dior woman is someone who is seeking beauty, love and her own truth in the world. All of the most romantic ideals. I think there’s a spirit of Catherine Dior, which was to put herself at great risk to do the right and noble thing, that is embodied in this perfume her brother originally created for her.” What role does perfume play in your everyday life, and do you have a special way of applying it? “I love scent and it feels central to our emotion. I love to spray my Miss Dior and walk through it, like my mother taught me, which has the sensual experience too of feeling like it’s a light rain of the most beautiful scent. Also, then it’s not too strong and ends up lightly in your hair, which most people will smell most!” What is your relationship to perfume and how did it come to be? “I got my first perfume bottle as a gift from Jean Reno when we finished filming Léon: The Professional when I was 12, and I remember feeling really grown up. Perfume felt like a sign of womanhood to me.” Has working as an actress changed the way you’ve thought about beauty over time? “I think because I always had to be made up for work, it never felt special or luxurious to me—it always felt like work. And so, in my own life, it wasn’t as fun as I see it is for my friends. Now, after having kids, I’m starting to appreciate it and get more excited by it again.” What’s your current beauty routine? “I use sunscreen every day, and usually use some light concealer (Dior Forever Skin Correct), mascara and Rouge Dior lipstick (a nude shade or 999 according to my look and how I feel). At the end of the day, I always wash my face and moisturize before bed.” ■ FROM LEFT: Miss

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Kate Lee

The Chanel celebrity makeup artist takes us through a jam-packed day in her shoes BY NATASHA WOLFF

There is nothing I love more than helping someone to feel incredible. —K ATE LEE

nglish makeup artist Kate Lee has become the go-to makeup artist for stars like Lily-Rose Depp, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley. But it didn’t start out so glamorously. “I started right at the very bottom,” says Lee. After moving to London to study fashion and makeup interpretation at The London College of Fashion, Lee got a job at the Shu Uemura makeup counter at Har vey Nichols department store. “I learned so much and held that part-time position for many years to support my early career,” she says. The years that followed took her to Europe, where she assisted notable artists like Val Garland, Linda Cantello and Carole Lasnier. “Val was my absolute hero and a true mentor to this day,” Lee explains. “The years I spent alongside her were what formed me as an artist. She really helped me to position myself and to see clearly which part of the industry I was most suited to.” Having a mentor was so important to the young makeup artist as she navigated the industry. “There have been many people who have helped me along the way—too many to mention, but I appreciate each and every one of them.” A chance meeting with actress Kate Winslet before Titanic made her a household name was a big breakthrough for Lee in her burgeoning freelance career. “We were both babies and got along like a house on fire!” she says. “Kate taught me a lot about makeup and the industry and eventually she asked me to work on a movie with her. We are still friends and she has not changed a bit.” Since those early years, the breadth of Lee’s work has expanded from fashion shows to celebrity and editorial work. “I love the diversity of work that I am allowed and, as much as I love editorial work, red carpets are really my joy,” she says. “There is nothing I love more than helping someone to feel incredible, and I’m looking forward to returning to the red carpet circuit. I love seeing what people are wearing and their different interpretations of glamour.” Here’s how the makeup artist spends a typical day.

“My go-to skincare is Chanel’s Hydra Beauty range, specifically the Camellia Glow Concentrate, which I apply in the evening before bed.”

manage my time and keeps me on track. 6:00 P.M. I am usually finished with work by this time, but sometimes I work later. Add to that at least an hour drive home most days when I’m in Los Angeles, and it tends to be a long day. I like to listen to podcasts while I am driving. I am very interested in nutrition and wellness, so my favorite podcasts at the moment tend to focus on those subjects, but I also like to get my news via a quick 30-minute podcast. 8:00 P.M. I have dinner with my husband and then prepare my kit for the next day. That sometimes means repacking my kit for a specific person or just cleaning my brushes and sanitizing my set bag. 9:30 P.M. I like to get to bed early. I take a shower, read, wind down and go to bed. ■

6:00 A.M. I wake up naturally around this time. This gives me a few hours to gather myself before going about my day. I generally start with either meditation, journaling or a Peloton cycling or yoga class depending on my mood and energy level. I light some incense or a candle. 7:00 A.M. I sit with my two little dogs and drink a cup of French Breakfast Tea with a drop of oat milk. This sets me up for the day as I don’t generally eat breakfast. 8:00 A.M. Jump in my car and head either to a studio or to a client’s house to begin work. Sometimes I am heading to the airport to f ly somewhere for a few days—it depends on the gig. I also always make sure I have a cooler in my car with water and coconut water. Avoiding sugar and staying hydrated helps me to maintain my energy throughout the day. I’m currently obsessed with a supplement called Lmnt. It’s an electrolyte drink mix, so I usually drop a couple of those in my purse to add to water during the day. areas are part of my patients’ regular maintenance, they are now starting to ask for injections like Kybella, which is great for reducing small areas of fat under the chin, and adding Voluma to help restructure and build out the chin and jawline.”

LUMENIS NUER A TIGHT “For skin smoothing and cellulite reduction, I love the new Lumenis NuEra Tight device, which uses multifocal radiofrequency energy to stimulate all three aspects of the dermal components—collagen, elastin and extracellular matrix polysaccharides like hyaluronic acid. When you increase the density of the dermis, it improves the overall smoothness of the skin structure, thus improving the appearance of cellulite. This noninvasive, zerodowntime treatment uses multiple handpieces to heat up the skin’s surface and is best suited for treating the face, upper arms, abdomen, f lanks, buttocks and thighs. I recommend four to six treatments (each session is $800–$1,000) for clients who have cellulite or skin laxity—think post-pregnancy, when abdominal skin has been stretched to extremes. I’m really excited about it.”

t comes as no surprise that after Labor Day, patients are clamoring to see their beloved dermatologist for a seasonal tune-up. “Every year at this time, I have a huge inf lux of patients who come in looking to correct the damage they have done to their skin over the spring and summer,” says top board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon Dr. Dendy Engelman. “In office, I have multiple modalities to address these concerns: chemical peels, intense pulsed light, photodynamic therapy and fractionated CO2 treatments. At home, patients want to restart their prescriptions for retinoids to help build collagen and elastin and reverse sun damage.” The New York City dermatologist, who works out of the Shafer Clinic at 535 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, talks to DuJour about the latest technologies she’s employing on her clients. shaferplasticsurgery.com

I N J E C TA B L E S “I’ve seen a huge uptick in injectables like Botox Cosmetic, Kybella and dermal fillers for the eyes, neck and jawline. When you simply look in the mirror head-on, the shadows and imperfections are less noticeable—but as people spend so much time on video calls these days, they have started to notice features that they are not so happy with. So, while filler and Botox in the periorbital and forehead

EMSCULPT NEO “For those looking for fat cell reduction and muscle toning with no downtime, Emsculpt NEO is a great noninvasive solution that combines two therapies in one by combining radio frequency and high-intensity focused electromagnetic energies (HIFEM) to activate around 24,000 supramaximal muscle contractions in a single 30-minute session—which is equivalent to doing the same number of crunches or squats— resulting in 25 percent more muscle and 30 percent less fat, on average. The treatment now has full-body treatment capabilities with the latest release of smaller paddle applicators for the biceps, triceps, inner and outer thigh, calves and saddlebags. The type of contraction activated with NEO is one that cannot be achieved by a standard workout/motion. I recommend patients do four 30-minute sessions over a four-week period.” ■ FROM TOP: Dr. Dendy Engelman; the Lumenis NuEra Tight machine at the Shafer Clinic in New York City

FALL 2021

After a gluttonous summer of palomas and pie, we talked with Dr. Dendy Engelman to learn about the face and body treatments you need this fall

37

Fall Forward

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS “As much as we try to prevent UV damage throughout the summer by wearing our sunscreen and staying out of the sun, we often head into fall with some accumulated damage, dullness and perhaps hyperpigmentation. I love active ingredients like AHAs and BHAs for removing dead skin cells and resetting our natural, healthy glow. In-office peels and facials are, of course, a fantastic way to do this. For those who prefer at-home skincare, Glo Skin Beauty offers a variety of professional-quality peel box kits designed for easy athome use. I love their Retinol + C Smoothing Peel—it’s a great dose of antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients for the skin. Retinol, of course, is key for preventative anti-aging. I recommend that patients begin using it regularly, starting as early as their twenties.”

DUJOUR.COM

THE DOC TOR IS IN

“I recommend getting three QWO injections (the first and only FDA-approved injectable for the treatment of cellulite in women for use on the buttocks) three weeks apart. The injections take about 10 minutes—leaving plenty of time to get your Botox or a HydraFacial. There can be some localized bruising after the injections, but studies show most bruising lessened after each treatment and resolved in less than 21 days. QWO ranges from $1,000-$1,500 per session depending on the severity of the cellulite. I love that QWO was studied on all skin types and ethnicities, because women of all shapes, sizes and colors have cellulite!”

Everything’s Coming up Rosie After years of being in front of the camera, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley goes behind the scenes to launch her own beauty brand, Rose Inc., this fall BY NATASHA WOLFF

A

fter launching her editorial platform, Rose Inc., in 2018 to build a beauty community online, model and entrepreneur Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wanted to bring her own experience in the industry to the masses. “I’m a frustrated magazine editorslash-creative director at heart, so I thought I should build a platform where I can do it all,” she says on a Zoom from London one July afternoon. In the months that followed, she began to meet with investors and partners about creating a complementary product line. “Sticking my name on something wasn’t meaningful or thoughtful to me,” she explains. “I felt certain that if I was going to bring a product line to the market, I wanted it to be as innovative and value-driven as possible.” A meeting with clean beauty maverick Caroline Hadfield (who is responsible for launching Biossance and Pipette) followed and a visit to Amyris’ lab followed. “I was really blown away by the innovation, and I knew our aesthetics and values were aligned,” Huntington-Whiteley says. In August 2019, she signed on with Amyris, the biotechnology and science powerhouse, with Hadfield as CEO. “We shared similar values in that we wanted to develop products that would be good for people and the environment,” says Hadfield. “To kick off, I had asked Rosie to meet and provide a few benchmark products to start brainstorming around the brand and collection. She arrived with two suitcases full of products! I knew right there we shared a passion for beauty and that our partnership would be a great success.”

Two years later, the brand is ready to debut its first six-product collection of skincare and color makeup: Modern Essentials. The multipurpose skin and makeup products include Softlight, a luminous hydrating concealer in 20 shades, Lip Sculpt Amplifying Lip Color, Brow Renew Enriched Eyebrow Shaping Gel, Blush Divine Radiant Lip and Cheek Color, Radiant Brightening Serum and Skin Resolution Clarifying Toner. “I’ve had acne-prone skin my entire adult life,” says Huntington-Whiteley. “I wear these products every day and they give instant results. All of our products are ultra-nourishing, and it’s about giving back to the skin.” These gentle-yet-powerful products feature five proprietary bioengineered botanical ingredients: the Amyris-innovated squalene, hemisqualane, bisabolol, biosilicia and cannabigerol (CBG). The 100 percent non-comedogenic, vegan formulas also feature safe synthetic ingredients such as vitamin E that is derived from 100 percent non-GMO sunf lower seeds. The first collection launches on Rose Inc.’s website and at Sephora nationwide in September (worldwide retailers include Space NK, Net-a-Porter and Liberty). The brand will continue to launch skincare and color makeup side-by-side with future launches like eye cream, eye shadow, body products, bronzer and lip products to follow.

Transparency, inclusivity and affordability were other important factors for the entrepreneur. “Accessibility has always been important to me,” says Huntington-Whiteley, “being accessible with a fair price point while being aspirational.” To that end, the line is all priced under $100. “Rose Inc. is committed to full transparency with everything we do—packaging, formula and ingredients and benefits. And we know our products are efficacious,” echoes Hadfield. To that end, the sleek packaging boasts a minimum of 25 percent recycled plastic, 100 percent recyclable glass bottles and cartons made with 30 percent hemp and 90 percent recycled plastic liners. Having a loyal following helped the brand in its product development. “We were able to tap right into our Rose Inc. community and the data we’ve sourced,” says Huntington-Whiteley. The team also tapped Los Angeles-based makeup artist Cherish Brooke Hill as a consultant. “Shade matching was important to us,” says Huntington-Whiteley. “Cherish helped make sure we had inclusive shade offerings.” So what’s Huntington-Whiteley’s definition of beauty? “I always go back to something my mother said early on when she was teaching me how to apply makeup and I was caking it on. She told me to have a more natural hand and enhance what I have, not hide what I have.” Now, for the 34-year-old mother, that advice has taken on a new meaning. “It means focusing on the aspects of myself that I’m proud of and want to enhance. There’s beauty in being yourself.” roseinc.com ■

Its expertly curated selection of high-end, clean CBD wellness and beauty products include topicals for pain relief, a sleep and immune boost spray duo, bath soaks and skin elixirs. Moroccan floor covering brand Beni Rugs opens a New York City showroom and unveils a collaboration with design aesthete Athena Calderone BY LAUREN WATZICH

nspired by Morocco’s beautiful landscape, rich tones and old-world architecture, along with its ancient rug-making traditions, entrepreneurs Robert Wright and Tiberio Lobo-Navia are modernizing the trade of Moroccan rugs with their brand Beni Rugs, founded in 2018. Offering rugs that are authentically (and ethically) handmade in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, the duo specializes in easily customizable designs ranging from natural forms and abstract artwork to zellige tilework patterns. Expanding its footprint outside the digital marketplace, the company recently launched two physical locations: a studio headquarters near Marrakech and its first U.S. showroom, Beni Apartment, in downtown New York City. Featuring a showroom with sleek rug displays, a vast collection of yarns and color, and a team of Berber women who weave in a courtyard surrounding a 150-year-old olive tree, the brand’s new Morocco studio will be the first space where clients can not only design a custom rug but meet the craftspeople behind their creation. “The fact that they’ll also be able to enjoy Italian coffee and play petanque afterward doesn’t hurt either,” says Lobo-Navia. Initially, the duo were only focused on building out the headquarters. “We didn’t know the opportunity in New York City would come so soon,” Wright says of the decision to open a U.S. showroom. They learned of an available apartment in Greenwich Village through friend and longtime collaborator stylist Colin King, and they fell in love. Between the herringbone f loors, perfectly patinated doors and French doors that open to a garden, very little had to be done to make the space feel on-brand. “The bones of this apartment fit the bill perfectly,” explains Wright. Situated in a historic brownstone on West 9th Street, the nontraditional showroom appeals to a globetrotting clientele. “We had Donald Judd–inspired shelving custom-built to highlight

Moroccan treasures, vessels and Robert and Tiberio’s favorite books,” explains King. “The rest of the decor is all either custom or vintage, highlighting Beni’s love of global design and craftsmanship. The space is made to feel like you could be in New York, but also in any of the timeless locations Beni has staged their brand shoots previously.” A rotating, seasonal installation of handwoven Beni knotted and f lat weave rugs will highlight new designs and special collaboration collections at the Apartment, including their newest works with Athena Calderone, the powerhouse creative behind inf luential lifestyle site EyeSwoon. “Athena’s collection is really beautiful,” says Lobo-Navia. “Geometric designs in a sunfaded, feminine palette—a totally new direction for Beni. I can say that we had an absolute blast photographing the collection in Mallorca earlier this year.” The pair plans to be in town every few months to host intimate events. Plus, the showroom will treat guests to a special blend of coffee created by Moroccan brand Bloom Coffee. “We can’t wait to light a fire on a cold winter day and welcome our friends and collaborators to the space to see what’s new,” says Wright. benirugs.com ■

Holding Court with Roger Federer Tennis star Roger Federer is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. In a new book, The Master: The Long Run and Beautiful Game of Roger Federer, sports journalist Christopher Clarey takes a closer look

O

n the court, Swiss tennis player Roger Federer is famously precise, powerful, determined, tough and dominant—one of the most successful athletes of the 21st century. At 40, he has won 20 Grand Slam men’s singles titles and has been ranked world No. 1 in the ATP rankings a total of 310 weeks. Of course, his strength extends beyond delivering killer 130 mph serves. His appealing image—in conversation, he’s very confident, gentle, well-spoken—combined with his controversy-free life and unprecedented success has helped generate an estimated $100 million a year in endorsement deals with blue-chip brands. His 2018 split with Nike gave him

the opportunity to sign a one-year deal worth a reported $300 million with Japanese apparel brand Uniqlo, and he also has deals with Rolex, Moët & Chandon, Mercedes-Benz, Credit Suisse and Wilson. His personal life keeps him just as busy: he’s been married to Swiss tennis player Mirka Federer since 2009, and the couple has four children. In a new book, The Master: The Long Run and Beautiful Game of Roger Federer, sports journalist Christopher Clarey takes a closer look at the tennis player’s life on and off the court. If anyone wonders how Federer has played with great success for more than a decade since becoming a family man, much of the explanation is in the following paragraph.

Bill Ryan was Federer’s agent when he and Mirka began dating. “She was clearly the boss once they got together,” Ryan said. “You could see he was smitten with her.” Mirka remained part of Federer’s tennis brain trust for years, even after veteran coaches like Tony Roche, José Higueras, and Paul Annacone joined the team. When Annacone came to Zurich in 2010 for what was essentially a trial run, he had dinners with Roger and Mirka together. Annacone already knew Mirka socially through his former employer Tim Henman and through Federer’s agent, Tony Godsick.

“Mirka was really direct,” Annacone said. “She was asking questions, saying, ‘This is where Roger has had issues strategically, what is your philosophy about this stuff?’ It was really information gathering. I never felt I was under the gun, and Roger was the same way. I never felt oppressed by it and never felt it was out-ofbounds, and the more I got to be around them, the more I respected and appreciated their relationship and roles. Because Roger clearly loves her unconditionally, and she’s strong, and she’s smart, and she knows tennis and she knows life. She also is relentlessly protective of those she loves, her husband and her family, and, by the way, the people who work in that group.” It is a dauntingly ephemeral thing: sports greatness. But Federer over a twenty-year span has made it seem more reliable and durable with ample help from his coaches, his trainers, his therapists, his friends, his agent, and, above all it seems clear, from his wife. ■

DUJOUR.COM

think Roger owes 50 percent of his career to Mirka, because she manages an incredible number of things,” said Marc Rosset, who has known them since before they started dating. “If you are an elite athlete and you are married with an actress and she says that’s great, you practice or go to this tournament but maybe we should do this or that instead, that is perhaps why your career stops more quickly.” Mirka, no trophy wife, certainly understood what her husband required to keep winning trophies. The daughter of an immigrant jeweler, she also enjoyed the goodies that tennis greatness provided: the highest-end homes and possessions, the five-star travel, the easy contact with other prominent people, including Anna Wintour, the Vogue magazine editor who was a major tennis fan and became an informal adviser. “I think Anna had a huge influence on both Mirka and Roger,” said Max Eisenbud, the IMG vice president who has long represented Maria Sharapova. “I did make the mistake once of asking Mirka’s help to plan my honeymoon,” said Justin Gimelstob, a former ATP Tour player and board member. “She came up with the best honeymoon places: every concierge, every hotel, every outing, the sequencing, everything was great. What I realized when I got the bill was that I took the honeymoon of a 20-time Grand Slam champion and my careerhigh ranking was 63.” But Mirka, unlike the supportive partners of most other tennis legends, understood the professional game on a granular level. She had been a top 100 player: an Olympian and Fed Cup team member. If not for her chronic, career-ending foot problem, she surely would have soared higher. Though it is hard to imagine now, friends tried to talk the nineteen-year-old Federer out of starting to date the twenty-twoyear-old Mirka after the 2000 Olympics. The friends could sense that with Mirka, who was more mature and polished than Federer at that stage, the relationship could get serious quickly. “We all kind of said, ‘Roger, no, no, no. You’re too young. Just stay free a little bit longer,’ but he went against our advice,” Sven Groeneveld told me. “And obviously he made the right choice.” Mirka was Federer’s serious girlfriend before he became a fullblown tennis star, long before he won his first Wimbledon. Federer appreciated that and trusted in that. “I got together with her when I had zero titles, and we kind of went through all of this together, and now we have a family,” Federer told me. “It’s pretty incredible.” He also liked that she understood and played the game at a high level. “I never started dating a tennis player because of that,” Federer told me. “But in my situation, I think it really does help, because she knows in some ways what it takes, and she did it on a level that was still very good but not at my level. She already put in a massive amount of hours herself. So when I tell her, ‘Look, I need to go to practice,’ she’s the first to say, ‘I know, I know you need it, and you need only maybe 20 percent of what I needed.’”

Candice Huffine’s Brooklyn home is an eclectic oasis of color and flair BY K ASEY CAMINITI PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEAN LITCHFIELD

s a a pioneer in the fashion industry, Candice Huffine exudes a bright confidence and contagious creative f lair that has been woven into more than her professional tapestry of success. Huffine is credited as the first-ever plus-size model to be featured in the celebrated Pirelli calendar, she has walked the runways at New York Fashion Week for the likes of Prabal Gurung and 11 Honoré and served as Christian Siriano’s muse. Most recently, Huffine teamed up with her best friend of 15 years, Shelly Lynch-Sparks, conveniently also the founder and principal interior designer at Hyphen & Co., to transform her Williamsburg, Brooklyn, home into a ref lection of her own creative energy. “This was not our first project together and definitely won’t be the last,” says Huffine. “I think it is a true testament that two Libras really can make some great decisions.” The Williamsburg loft was built in 1915 by architect Cass Gilbert, who famously designed the Woolworth Building. “The apartment has an old industrial warehouse look and feel,” says Lynch-Sparks. “The bones are beautiful with exposed concrete beams and clean lines.” Huffine adds that she chose this space because it was different from any she had lived in before. “I thought the all-white, loft-inspired design lent a perfect blank canvas to design outside of the box,” she says. The end result is a pattern- and color-filled oasis. Supporting local and female-owned businesses was also a top priority during this transformation. The coffee table, wallpaper, leather wall tiles, banquette, cushions, plant design and much of the art come from women artists and women-owned companies. Huffine and Lynch-Sparks also incorporated many design elements from Brooklyn artisans to help create the eclectic vibe. “We went for a vibrant, colorful aesthetic with pattern and texture layered thoughtfully in each room, ” says Lynch-Sparks. The home features wall coverings from Eskayel, leather wall tiles from Avo and a custom rug from Beni Rugs. “The ultimate goal was to create an interesting, happy space that gave you something fun to look at in every corner,” says Huffine. The distinctive decor throughout the home certainly creates an ambiance, but Huffine admits that her favorite design element is the peacefulness and f low of the apartment. “We created private spaces by adding glass sliding doors to the previously open, undefined foyer space and removed doors to open up areas and create more use and purpose. It was important that every corner served a usable function.” Huffine says that every aspect of her home brings her joy after a long day of modeling. “I am so happy to be back and finally be able to welcome friends into my home and raise a glass in a space that deserves all the good times.” ■

Rob McClure Tony nominee Rob McClure is no stranger to the moviesturning-into-musicals trend. Having previously appeared in stage versions of Beetlejuice and Honeymoon in Vegas, the New Jersey–born, Philadelphia-based actor is about to tackle the title role in a musical version of the blockbuster Mrs. Doubtfire, in which Robin Williams starred as a divorced dad who pretends to be a folksy Mary Poppins type. How is McClure getting ready to get back on stage? Lots of cardio, he says. “Those quick changes are no joke.” (Previews begin late October at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.)

Keenan Scott II got his start in performing as a slam poet. “Ever since the moment I first felt the captivating energy of a live audience, I knew it had me forever,” he says. “Live theater can transport a person unlike any other medium of art.” This October, his play Thoughts of a Colored Man, about seven Black men on a single day in Brooklyn, will open at the Golden Theatre on Broadway. “I wanted to create a contemporary story where I saw myself and my community,” he adds of the piece which features spoken word, slam and rhythm. As for making his Broadway debut, “It’ll just feel good to see live performances again in the theater,” Scott says. “But the rehearsal room is where all the magic happens.”

he real-life character of Ted White couldn’t get out of his own way. That’s not a problem that actor Marlon Wayans has in the new Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect. Starring opposite powerhouse Jennifer Hudson, Wayans brings a wellroundedness and depth to the role of Franklin’s troubled, abusive first husband and manager. “I just try to be vulnerable,” he says. “I allow myself to feel empathy for people and, when you see something horrible in a person, also see that something is salvageable.” To prepare, the 49-year-old actor spoke with Franklin’s family members and studied interviews with White to learn his cadence, but ultimately built the character around a much bigger picture. “You always see the abuse,” he says. “You never see how two people fell in love or how complex a relationship is,” he explains. “I wanted the audience to love him, to hate him and to feel bad for him because they want him to do better. I wanted people to feel what it’s like to get rid of a toxic relationship and how hard it is.” Wayans is both realistic and passionate as he speaks about White’s role in Franklin’s legacy and how important it was to present the tumultuous journey that led them to each other. “The guy that gets a great woman like Aretha to fall in love has to be charming, funny and smart,” he says. “He was a great catalyst in her life and career, but he couldn’t take her all the way there and he couldn’t fix his damage.” Simultaneously, Wayans’ new stand-up special, You Know What It Is, recently premiered on HBO Max, in which he explores family, trust, sexuality and acceptance. Despite the hilariously nostalgic references to his past work in The Wayans Bros. and White Chicks, the special is rooted in emotional real-life experiences. “I think it was important for me to be completely transparent,” says Wayans. “The most respectful thing you can do is be honest and be real.” With dramatic portrayals and authenticity, Wayans is bringing his natural comedic instincts to multifaceted performances on both the screen and stage. ■

HOTEL C ASTELLO DI RESCHIO Autumn in Umbria is set to be spectacular with the opening of Hotel Castello di Reschio, a 10th-century castle turned sumptuous Italian escape. Set on 3,700 acres of rolling hills, gardens and vineyards, the intimate 36-room property (with nine additional villas) is the multigenerational passion project of the Bolza family, who have meticulously restored the estate to its original splendor with the help of local artisans. Enormous carved stone fireplaces, intricate stucco details and exquisite trompe l’oeil paintings adorn the spacious suites and public areas, along with bespoke furnishings and lighting designed by the family architect, Count Benedikt Bolza. A subterranean spa in the original wine cellar, an idyllic pool shaded by umbrella pines and an equestrian center complete with elegant dressage horses are all unique draws, as are cooking classes— often with truff le hunting and foraging excursions involved. Given Reschio’s location on the Umbria-Tuscany border, gastronomy is central to any stay here, and the terraced Ristorante Al Castello is the place for refined Italian fare at sunset, while the Ristorante Alle Scuderie—with its buzzy Centrale Bar—is perfect for wood-fired pizzas and an aperitivo. The glass-ceilinged Palm Court is the spot for afternoon tea, while Il Torrino in the former watchtower serves the best post-swim sandwiches, cocktails and homemade gelato. With just 111 guest rooms and suites (19 have private plunge pools), the San Domenico Palace, Taormina, a Four Seasons Hotel is built on the site of a 14th-century Dominican convent. Perched on a rocky promontory high above the Ionian Sea, the Taormina property boasts spectacular views in every direction. Set amid lush gardens reimagined by acclaimed Italian landscape architect Marco Bay, the interiors pair contemporary art with antiquities and architectural relics. “Everything past guests have always loved about San Domenico Palace has been restored, with familiar faces and vistas at every turn,” says the hotel’s general manager, Lorenzo Maraviglia, who has returned to his home country following years abroad to introduce Four Seasons to Sicily for the first time. “It’s been a meticulous evolution that honors the site’s past while elevating every aspect to a new level of personalized service, extraordinary experiences and the opportunity to create memories to last a lifetime. We are incredibly grateful to Gruppo Statuto for their investment and proud of the fact that it’s an Italian company that undertook this massive renovation project using only local craftspeople. This is Italy at its best.” With executive chef Massimo Mantarro at the helm of the hotel’s four signature restaurants, Principe Cerami, Rosso, Anciovi and Bar & Chiostro, the best of Sicilian cuisine is yours for the taking. Savory pastas like marinated cuttlefish tagliatelle over homemade spaghetti with cuttlefish ink and a zucchini blossom fondue and a penne alla Norma with eggplant and ricotta cheese are two of the must-try dishes on the mouth-watering menu. fourseasons.com

One of summer’s most exciting openings is Villa Igiea, an historic art nouveau palazzo-turned-boutique bolthole that’s part of the Rocco Forte Hotel collection. Their seventh property in Italy—and second in Sicily—has been meticulously renovated and restored by hotelier Sir Rocco Forte and his design director sister, Olga Polizzi, with the help of interior designers Paolo Moschino and Philip Vergeylen of London’s Nicholas Haslam. The result of their painstaking attention to detail is a stunning 100-room grand hotel overlooking the Gulf of Palermo where guests are transported back to a stunning belle epoque era. Rooms are richly appointed in tapestries and velvet, with locally produced ceramics and frescoes found in libraries and niches throughout. A spa visit is central to any stay here with signature treatments and Sicilian products by Irene Forte administered in a light-filled sanctuary adjacent to the hotel’s magnificent gardens. Equally enticing are Villa Igiea’s dining options: Chef Fulvio Pierangelini oversees three restaurants, including the more formal Florio, with its terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The vaulted Terrazza Bar is the place for an aperitivo, while Alicetta Pool Bar serves light bites, woodf ired pizzas and housemade gelato. Palermo is often overlooked as visitors make beelines for the beaches and Taormina, but Villa Igiea is the perfect perch for exploring this vibrant Sicilian city. roccofortehotels.com

First opened in 2003 as part of the J.K. Place brand, the Place Firenze is the brainchild of Italian entrepreneur Carlo Babini and his family. Years later, it was time for a new look and new offerings to appeal to modern travelers. “The time has come to embark on a new adventure, celebrate what makes us different and recognize the contribution of talented general manager Claudio Meli in forging such a unique identity in the world of Italian hospitality,” explains Babini. Studio Luigi Fragola provided a serene, contemporary new design concept for this elegant Florentine home on the historic Piazza Santa Maria Novella. “The aim was to create an urban design scheme with a contemporary feel that was nevertheless immersed in the historical context of the hotel’s location,” says Luigi Fragola, “to enact an alchemical fusion of old and new in order to rejuvenate a much-loved classic.” The Terrace all-day restaurant located right on the piazza is shaded by parchment-hued parasols with red fringe, offering a breezy new look for al fresco dining. The Kitchen & The Bar indoors serves Tuscan cuisine by chef Asso Migliore that is simple yet divine. theplacefirenze.com

Just steps from the majestic Duomo and the galleries of the Uffizi, the reimagined Helvetia & Bristol marries 19th-century glamour with contemporary design after a restoration that has been six years in the making. The original Helvetia palazzo has been seamlessly joined with the adjacent Bristol wing—a building that once housed Banco di Roma—and its beautiful parquet oak floors, sumptuous velvet curtains and enormous canopy beds are reminiscent of a bygone Grand Tour era. The hotel’s 25 new rooms and suites have been designed by Anouska Hempel, whose flair for luxurious fabrics and finishes is in full effect. Together with the finest Italian craftspeople—Moleria Locchi, glassmakers from Murano; Antico Setificio Fiorentino, local makers of tapestries and silks; to name but a few—the 89 rooms of this Starhotels Collezione property have gone from good to positively sublime. The recently completed Bristol Winter Garden, with its art deco skylight, walls of mirrors and chinoiserie detailing, is the place for a formal yet festive meal, while Cibrèo Caffè is the casual, convivial spot for breakfast or an evening aperitivo. The hotel’s spa— soon to be the largest in central Florence—is built on the site of former Capitoline thermal baths of the Roman Florentia and promises to entice sybarites and history buffs alike. Zero Dark Thirty, a ripped-from-the-headlines thriller about the search for Osama Bin Laden that garnered the 44-year-old actress her second Academy Award nomination, she took a serious look at the Hollywood around her. “I immediately saw there weren’t a lot of options for women, at least in terms of great characters that are different. Actresses were regulated to a single type,” says Chastain, talking via Zoom while on vacation with friends and family in Italy. Studying acting and repertory theater at Juilliard in New York had given her a wide breadth of choice roles, but, suddenly, she opened her eyes to see that the film world might be “a tad limiting in terms of what people were offering.” It was around that time that Chastain stumbled on the 2000 documentary The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Narrated by RuPaul, it’s about the life of the late Tammy Faye Messner, a Christian TV personality, singer and evangelist often parodied for her marriage to Jim Bakker (who was later imprisoned for fraud and conspiracy), not to mention her over-thetop style, which included heavy makeup and a perpetual tan. Messner died in 2007 of colon cancer. “I knew about Tammy from what I’d seen on Saturday Night Live, but I actually had never seen her give an interview until I watched the documentary,” Chastain says. “My impression from sketch television was that she cried all the time, she was a crook and always had mascara running down her face.” But Chastain found herself particularly moved by the film and Messner’s message that “everyone is deserving of love,” she explains. So she called her agent and manager and bought the narrative feature film rights to the documentary herself. Go ahead. Call it one of Chastain’s “crazy ideas,” she says. “But I have these ideas that we have to push against an old-fashioned way the film industry has worked.” Another “crazy idea” Chastain had was a female-driven espionage thriller, a subject she’d learned about while working on Zero Dark Thirty. “Where’s the female version that isn’t a comedy?” Chastain asked herself. She assembled a team of actresses (including Lupita Nyong’o and Penelope Cruz), found a screenwriter (playwright Theresa Rebeck, whose Spike Heels Chastain had done scenes from at Juilliard) and The 355 will be released in early 2022. “I was stoked,” Chastain says. “The actresses own the movie. How incredible.” The truth, the flame-haired Chastain explains, is that “creating [film and television] is a lot of work. There are so many headaches on the producing side. It’s so much easier when someone sends you a script. But I’ve never been the person who says to go with the status quo. I’d studied the industry for a long time. If I’ve been given this golden ticket, I understand how lucky I am to do what I do. For me not to use my platform to do something positive for others just feels irresponsible.”

Flash-forward nine years to this September, and the fruits of Chastain’s labor of love, a narrative film also called The Eyes of Tammy Faye, will hit movie theaters. If Chastain’s career has encompassed a series of chameleon-like performances in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, The Help, Molly’s Game, The Martian and Interstellar, among others, The Eyes of Tammy Faye provides a full-on transformation. Adds Chastain, “I look so different in every movie.” “She disappeared completely into this character,” says Michael Showalter (The Big Sick), the film’s director. “This is a character that Jess has lived with for so long and a true passion project for her to honor this real person,” says Andrew Garfield, who co-stars as Jim Bakker. “We would also go to church together on our Sundays off, trying to commune with God and Jim and Tammy and do them justice.” There were days when it would take Chastain seven and a half hours to get into makeup as Tammy Faye, especially for a final musical number that will no doubt have award season prognosticators buzzing. “I just wanted to cry,” Chastain says. “People don’t understand that [that kind of makeup] takes a lot of energy, but I used that time to listen to her voice. I just rewatched and rewatched her on video. I’ve seen every video she’s ever done.” For the first time, Chastain must also sing multiple times on-screen. She’d done it before, a little bit in Crimson Peak and in Tree of Life, “but I’ve never sung like Tammy Faye. To be honest, I was supposed to pre-record [a few tracks] and I was so scared,” Chastain says. “I drank whiskey and Throat Coat [tea]. With Tammy Faye, it always sounds like she’s hollering to heaven.” In fact, recalls Chastain, “there were so many parts of making this movie that terrified me. On the first day of shooting, I started shaking before the first take. That’s never happened to me on a movie, and it was so embarrassing. But I thought, If I’m going to throw myself off this cliff, I’m going to jump off the deep end. People might really make fun of me. But Tammy Faye probably thought that every day, and she did it anyway.” Chastain’s ability to feel the fear and do it anyway certainly wouldn’t surprise Anne Hathaway, who became close friends with Chastain when they filmed Interstellar. Hathaway calls Chastain “this irresistible mix of traits,” two of which are “fearless and discerning. She’s a gifted and tuned-in listener in life and on-screen. Jess is one of the most generous and sensitive—but tough as nails—people that I know.” Also this fall, Chastain appears in far less makeup and in more natural light in HBO’s new Scenes From a Marriage, based on Ingmar Bergman’s 1973 Swedish miniseries. Chastain plays opposite Oscar Isaac, her old Juilliard pal of 20 years, who texted her lastminute to jump in as the show was going into production during the COVID-19 pandemic. “She’s one of the greats,” says Isaac. “She’s someone that has always inspired me and brought the best out of me, both as an actor and a person. Acting with her is effortless. Nothing needs to be planned in advance. As long as I’m present, I know anything can happen because there is total trust.” Adds Chastain, “Because Oscar and I are so comfortable, we didn’t have to be polite. In some sense, we could read each other’s minds.” Says Scenes From a Marriage creator Hagai Levi, known for his work on the original Israeli In Treatment, “Their old-time chemistry made their married dynamic appear very real and close on-screen.” Of course, Chastain has her own dashing husband at home, fashion executive Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo. She promises that though both Scenes From a Marriage and The Eyes of Tammy Faye show relationships crumbling (as does Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, which Chastain hopes to do on the West End soon, after a production was cancelled because of the pandemic), her husband is “great.” Usually, because there are so many people working on set, you have a lot of visitors and “there are just people everywhere,” Chastain says. But because of protocols, Preposulo wasn’t allowed to visit Chastain on Scenes From a Marriage. “There was never a break. I wanted to be reminded of my great husband, but it was so intense and so intimate. Takes were 25 minutes long. We were just fully invested in our characters.” Which is, of course, the whole reason Chastain got into acting in the beginning. And if she can push Hollywood along in the process, all the better. Making Tammy Faye, she explains, was “the most difficult thing I’ve ever done and the scariest thing I’ve ever done. But I did it because it needed to be told. I’m not very good at toeing the line and keeping the status quo. I’ve never been good at that.” ■

tumble upon this North Scottsdale lot surrounded by cacti in the Sonoran Desert and you’ll fall in love too. That’s just what happened when a West Coast couple visited the site in 2016 and decided to construct their dream family home. The couple brought in Anthony Salcito of Salcito Custom Homes for this ground-up build and local interior designer Holly Ogden, partner at Wiseman & Gale Interiors, to mastermind its interiors. Ogden had collaborated with the couple and their extended family for years, so there was a familiarity there. “The lot is really positioned at the perfect vantage point to view the mountains in the foreground and the valley below with no obstructed views,” says Ogden. “Positioning the house to best optimize these views was very important. The house feels grounded, but there are definitely moments where you feel like you’re f loating as the mountains change colors around you with the rise and fall of the sun.” The couple, who reside at the home with their two teenage daughters and many dogs, tasked the team with creating a comfortable, casual, quintessentially Arizona home that embraced the spectacular desert views and could accommodate their large extended family. “Creating a home and not just a house has always been at the top of the list of the owner’s directives,” says Ogden. “The end result had to reflect their family and lifestyle.”

The resulting home, built into the hillside, boasts 12,000 square feet of living space spread across five bedrooms, five bathrooms and three powder rooms. “There’s a sense of scale to this house that you’re always aware of and trying to get right,” says Ogden. The wife is a great cook and so a working kitchen that functioned well in addition to being beautiful was paramount. “The goal was to make sure the family was represented as a collective whole,” says Ogden. The interiors boast expansive rooms that feature gorgeous natural light streaming in alongside plaster walls and old beams. Terra-cotta roof tiles add a European aesthetic to the American retreat. “The ebb and f low between these spaces was very important to both the function and aesthetic of the house,” says Ogden. “We intentionally played with the restraint from room to room, pulling back almost to a minimal level in some areas and, at other times, going quite grand. The homeowners have an affinity for authentic materials so, with the help of Amy Johannsen and Studio Ressource, these were incorporated into the design from the early stages.” The well-lived-in home isn’t a showpiece or ever too fussy or formal for its inhabitants. Plus, it’s filled with works of art and objects that the couple has sourced over the years which are very personal to them. Avid art and antiquities collectors, they also brought in works by notable Arizona artists like Bill Tull, Mayme Kratz, Nancy Tokar Miller and Carrie Marill in a nod to the house’s surroundings. The perfect blend of custom-made furniture, unique floor and wall coverings, special art and antiques and beautifully landscaped grounds (thanks to landscape architect Berghoff Design Group) have made this home a true desert oasis. ■

ou could say that Alessandro Nivola

got an offer he couldn’t refuse. After years of critically acclaimed work in films including American Hustle, The Wizard of Lies, and Selma—and an impressive stage career that earned him a Tony Award nomination for the 2014 revival of The Elephant Man—the 49-year-old actor is preparing for the biggest moment of his professional life, a season that will include a role in an as-yet-untitled David O. Russell project and the leading role in the hotly anticipated The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel to The Sopranos, landing in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1. The mafia family drama—which comes 14 years after the hit HBO series went off the air—centers on Richard “Dickie” Moltisanti (uncle to Tony Soprano and father of Christopher Moltisanti, for fans of the show) and his rise in a New Jersey crime family. True to its television predecessor, Saints is a nuanced consideration of a life spent in la cosa nostra, but it also doesn’t skimp on thrills, twists or loving winks at classic mob-movie tropes. “Dickie is funny and attractive yet violent and menacing. He let me do everything that I do best,” Nivola says over Zoom from Cleveland, where he and his wife, the actor and director Emily Mortimer, have come with their two children, who are making a movie in the city. “I’ve had so many opportunities to play a wide range of roles and to show how far I can stretch myself, but I’ve never had a role that was the center of the story like this. All I’ve wanted to be is a movie star who is a character actor.” Saints, then, is a seemingly perfect fit. Nivola was a fan of The Sopranos (one of only two television series he claims to have ever watched; the other is Friday Night Lights) and liked that series creator and, for this film, co-writer and producer David Chase made the film stand alone so it didn’t rely on the series. “The story could be told from scratch and I got to invent the character,” Nivola says. For Michael Gandolfini, who plays a young Tony Soprano, the role originated by his late father, James, Nivola’s personal connection to the film is what made his work so impressive. “It was personal for me and it was personal for him,” says Gandolfini, who had a weekly date with Nivola at the Brooklyn restaurant Junior’s over the course of getting to know one another. “We both understood that we were sharing this intense experience, respecting and feeling the weight of it all. We connected very quickly, so instinctually. I trusted him, and I knew the film was going to be special. That is the trust we had with one another, just like Dickie and Tony.” It’s a feeling Nivola seems to have inspired in a number of his colleagues. When the actor first auditioned for Chase, the writer wondered why he’d only seen Nivola in supporting roles. “I had seen him in two other movies and felt he was an extraordinary actor and yet I hadn’t seen him in what we’d call ‘big movies,’” Chase says. “So, here was a man who would be a fresh face to many, but I enjoyed his acting so much I knew he would be able to handle Dickie.”

Considering the scope of the project and the source material’s rabid fan base, there was a lot riding on this role for Nivola, who had six months to prepare. “When I wasn’t on set, I was pretty isolated alone in my trailer,” he says. “This was my first opportunity to hold a big studio movie up on my own shoulders. I didn’t want to fuck that up.” Nivola’s grandfather was an Italian immigrant who came to New York in the 1940s and raised his family in Greenwich Village, but the Boston-born Nivola had never been offered an Italian role before. “This film really embraced the immigrant experience and the whole culture that has grown up around that,” he says. “My personal history intersects in a lot of ways with it, and my dad always loved movies about Italian Americans. I must have watched Raging Bull about 30 times before I shot this film.” The Yale-educated Nivola also read up—a lot—on crime families and studied the relationships between mob bosses and their sons. (Ray Liotta plays his father in the film and Dickie yearns for a son of his own for years.) “The person I read the most of on the topic was Gay Talese. His book Honor Thy Father, about the Bonanno crime family, is all about fathers and sons,” Nivola says. “It really delved into that relationship within the mob.” Other touchstones? Talese’s famous “Frank Sinatra Has a Cold” essay for the April 1966 issue of Esquire and For the Sins of My Father: A Mafia Killer, His Son, and the Legacy of a Mob Life by Albert DeMeo. He might not have real-life experience in organized crime, but Nivola is as much of a family man off-screen as he plays on-screen. The actor has been married to Mortimer since 2003 and the couple has two children, a daughter, May, 11, and son, Sam, 17; they all live in a townhouse in Brooklyn. That is, when someone in the family isn’t shooting a movie. Recently, May and Sam have been in Cleveland filming Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of the Don DeLillo book White Noise. And it’s not their first foray into the family business. Sam wrote and directed a short film, Neighborhood Watch, that premiered at the Tribeca Festival earlier this year and starred his parents and sister. “We’ve had misgivings about it but we reluctantly agreed to let them do it,” says Nivola. “I gave up trying to give advice to my kids many years ago. It was a source of frustration for me, but eventually it became a relief. Now, the burden isn’t on me anymore. They don’t turn to me at all.” The film stars Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig as the siblings’ parents and the duo had a month— a luxury practically unheard of in Hollywood—to rehearse and get comfortable. “It was the most civilized and hilariously unusual situation,” says Nivola, “but Noah tells me they’re doing great.” He can’t be too surprised, really. If Nivola has learned one thing in the months leading up to the release of Saints, it’s never to bet against the family. ■

Barbara Kruger’s “Thinking of You. I Mean Me. I Mean You.” (2019)

Beloved by the likes of Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lopez, Highland Park–based jewelry brand Graziela, founded by Brazilian designer Graziela Kaufman, has introduced a new collection of stunning yet wearable statement pieces set in 18-karat white gold. Pérola, showcasing freshwater pearls paired with colorful London blue topaz, apatite and emerald gemstones (all sourced from her native Brazil), includes rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets arranged in whimsical silhouettes. “I have been wanting to create a pearl collection for the last five years,” says Kaufman. “I wanted it to be different from anything else on the market: modern, sexy, flowing designs of colored gems mixed with pearls creating pieces that are very wearable, not so serious and traditional. I set pearls in unusual silhouettes like ear cuffs, hoops and climbers to feel fresh and magical.”

s the proprietor of three Southampton mainstays, Ian Duke has had a lasting impact on Southampton’s social and culinary scene. The restaurateur has worked every restaurant job imaginable after starting as a dishwasher at a local restaurant when he was 13. Duke, who lives with his wife and daughter in East Quogue, and his partner David Hilty are the owners of the ever-popular Southampton Social Club (southamptonsocialclub.com), Union Burger Bar (unionburgerbar.com) and the newest East End dining destination, Union Sushi and Steak (dineatunion.com). The new steakhouse serves a variety of dry-aged Niman Ranch steaks alongside the freshest and most inventive fish and sushi dishes. “We created Union Sushi & Steak because it’s what the people of Southampton were asking for,” says Duke. “Southampton has no year-round sushi restaurants, and there isn’t a dedicated steakhouse. I am a big red meat eater and love a traditional steakhouse.” Next door, Union Burger Bar continues to serve up American comfort food classics. Southampton Social Club has been in business for a decade serving Hamptonites delectable menu items like tuna tacos, Caribbean-spiced mahi-mahi and a charred vegetable napoleon alongside live music. “The opening of Southampton Social Club was really the beginning of a whole new life for me,” says Duke. So what has he learned along the way? “It truly is a business where no one job is any more important than any other, and everyone relies on one another in order for everything to work smoothly,” says Duke. “Being able to roll with the punches is paramount.”

orn into a family of foodies, the kitchen was always the heartbeat of Sally Schimko’s home growing up in Israel. In turn, she developed a deep love and appreciation for playing in the kitchen. Now Miami-based, Schimko launched a tahini-based product line, The Tahini Goddess, after her tahini recipes took off on social media. “I was inspired and driven to make a business out of it,” she says. “I love to express myself through my food, and it’s how every flavor of my tahini and sugar-free halva was born. Cooking doesn’t need to be difficult and, as a busy working mom, I believe in simplicity.” The Tahini Goddess embraces Schimko’s roots by using a traditional millstone grounding process with authentic Israeli stones to create its products in Israel. The sesame seeds used in her kosher, vegan and low-carb tahini are roasted at low temperatures to retain as many nutrients as possible. Schimko also prides herself on making creamy, delicious tahini with carefully sourced sesame seeds. “I have always believed that food should come from the source—the people who have made it since the day they were born. Similar to how pasta is best sourced from Italy, tahini is best from Israel,” she says.

Schimko admits that while she has been eating tahini since she was baby, she first truly fell in love with it in her 20s. “I started traveling on my own more and exploring different cuisines and flavors and truly appreciating Mediterranean cuisine.” More recently, Schimko’s young son and daughter helped inspire her to experiment more in the kitchen with tahini recipes and, ultimately, launch her business. “I wanted them to both experience the Mediterranean lifestyle I grew up on,” she says, adding that though her son was a picky eater, he loved her tahini. “Before I knew it, Ethan was eating more veggies, and I thought that if Ethan could eat healthier and enjoy doing so, everybody could!” Currently living in Miami with her husband and two children, Schimko feeds off the energy of the city and it is reflected in her growing brand. “We love the culture, the people, the lifestyle and the weather. The multicultural aspect and love for food and culture in Miami makes it a perfect home base.” From new flavorful tahinis to an upcoming collection of Mediterranean spices, Schimko’s menu doesn’t end there. “Having a boutique is definitely on my wish list, but who knows,” she says. “A girl can dream.” thetahinigoddess.com

MANOLO TAKES MADISON Just in time for its 50th anniversary, the luxury shoemaker returns to New York City with a new uptown flagship

W

153 FALL 2021

What was special about this space? “Manolo’s very first store in America in the late 1970s was on Madison Avenue, so when we found this particular building, it felt like a true coming home. At the time of visiting the space it was two separate stores, so to be able to turn this magnificent double-fronted building from the 1920s back to single use was a unique opportunity. To also have our showroom and offices above means that this really is the beating heart of Manolo Blahnik in America.”

DUJOUR.COM

ith a career spanning 50 years, Spanish-born Manolo Blahnik is one of the world’s most influential footwear designers. “Shoes help transform a woman,” he says. His designs and sketches have appeared in museum exhibitions and numerous books (the latest being 2017’s The Art of Shoes). He collaborated with director Sofia Coppola on the costumes for her 2006 film Marie Antoinette (the film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design). He’s also an Honorary CBE and has won awards like the Footwear News Lifetime Achievement Award and the British Fashion Council Outstanding Achievement Award. So, it was time for the designer to have a rich yet welcoming new New York City flagship that honors his creations and takes the brand forward. “New York has always evoked a great sense of excitement for me, a city of endless possibilities,” says Blahnik. “So, it is an honor for me to open on Madison Avenue, an exquisite location, which I remember fondly from our formative years.” We spoke with Kristina Blahnik, the founder’s niece and the company’s CEO, to learn more about this homecoming. manoloblahnik.com

Who did you work with to bring this vision to life? “We worked with award-winning interior designer and friend of the brand David Thomas, whom we had previously worked with for our Paris boutique. David has a fantastic understanding of Manolo’s vision and cultural collages as well as the house values.” What aesthetic were you going for with this project? “Our boutiques all have a one-of-a-kind aesthetic that reference the location and Manolo’s whimsical style. The New York boutique also takes on this

approach and embodies Hollywood Regency, a theme that evokes grandeur and opulence but still has a sense of warmth and intimacy.” What are your favorite design elements? “The striped double-height ceilings, which absolutely capture the Hollywood Regency feel. And, of course, there is the bar, as we wanted to create an area where visitors could socialize and congregate. Our first boutique in London’s Chelsea neighborhood became the hangout for Manolo and his friends, so we really wanted to inject a sense of this relaxing ambiance in New York.”

eteran jewelry expert Jennifer Shanker has opened a retail space adjacent to her West Village fine jewelry showroom, a mecca for talented, independent designers. The boutique of the same name, which has attracted visitors like Kacey Musgraves, Busy Philipps, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Jenny Mollen, showcases jewelry from hot designers like Nikos Koulis, Bea Bongiasca, Jemma Wynne, Silvia Furmanovich and Jenna Blake. “I wanted to provide a retail presence for the designers we represent while providing neighborhood residents a beautiful space for discovery,” says Shanker. “Retail had never been part of our plan, but it was a risk I’m glad we took.” The welcoming, casual retail space sells the breadth of Shanker’s multidesigner jewelry assortment alongside cashmere sweaters from Leret Leret, art by Ori Gersht, vases by Paul Arnhold, contemporary home goods from Lateral Objects by Stefan Beckman and books by jewelry experts like Stellene Volandes. “After 20 years in the very niche designer fine jewelry world, the addition of new categories is both refreshing and inspiring,” says Shanker. “Collaborating with creatives from candles to cashmere, vases to vessels and from fine jewelry to flowers, being surrounded by beauty arranged in our own unique way has provided a visibility we didn’t know we needed or wanted or would enjoy ever so much. It’s opened up a whole new world of opportunities, relationships and collaborations.” The store has kept Shanker busy dreaming up merchandising and creative initiatives for her brands and her clients. On the occasion of her store opening, the entrepreneur curated the Have a Heart collection, a multidesigner charitable initiative. Every charm in this jewelry collection represents a heart or a star, and for each one sold at the store and online, the brand donates 10 percent of profits to charities near and dear to its heart. Shanker has surprised herself with how much she enjoys having the opportunity to interact with customers new and old. “The customer feedback we receive at the boutique is invaluable and helps us do our jobs better as a showroom, as we have first-hand feedback,” she says. “We learn so much about how people shop that really allows us to advise our designers in their process.” Plus, with so many empty storefronts in the West Village and the shuttering of downtown boutiques like Jeffrey, there weren’t many places to shop anymore. But now, she enthuses, “New York is back and it feels awesome.” We couldn’t agree more. musexmuse.com

range County–based sommeliers Arden Mont gomery and Margaux Reaume came together to launch Argaux to engage, educate and entertain wine customers. “It’s our mission to remove any intimidation surrounding wine and to make the world of wine approachable,” says Montgomery. “We want them to have access to our sommeliers, stories, tips on food and wine pairings and the inside scoop on where to taste wine while traveling.” After meeting at college in Arizona and bonding over their shared love of cooking, entertaining and hosting dinners, the duo decided to launch Argaux in Costa Mesa, California. “There is an evolving food scene and beautiful farmers markets with the freshest produce here,” says Montgomery. “Our community is active and healthy and they are starting to ask questions about their wine like, ‘Why do I get headaches when I drink red wine?’ and ‘What is natural wine and is it better for me?’” From carefully curated virtual tastings to the newly launched at-home Blind Tasting Kit, there is a thoughtful blend of learning and sipping with every activation. “Argaux is providing Orange County and beyond with the best small-production, family-owned and responsibly farmed wines in the world,” says Montgomery. “We felt like Orange County needed more diversity when it comes to where and how they access these

adeira was the wine of choice in the fledgling days of the 13 American colonies, and it is closely entwined with the history and lore of our little upstart nation. The signers of the Declaration of Independence toasted with glasses of the tawny wine, and it is mentioned countless times in literature as a favorite libation of characters ranging from the ones created by Austen to those of Hemingway. The Portuguese island of Madeira lies in the Atlantic, closer to Africa than Europe. The rainy, humid terroir of the island shouldn’t be hospitable to the vine, but the bastardo grape thrived. The distinctive rich, silky vanilla notes are created in the production process that was discovered in the 15th century quite accidentally. The island’s location and easily accessible port made it a crucial stop on the journey to the New World. Ships would stock barrels of sweet wine that was fortified with brandy to make the eight-week journey. While the barrels rocked back and forth in the heat of the hulls along the equator, the wine was slowly cooked, and the taste was changed completely and for the better. From that, Madeira wine was born. The original bastardo grape has long since vanished, thanks to crop ailments in the late 19th century, followed shortly by American Prohibition and World War II. Very few casks remain from before the torrid end of Madeira’s early winemaking days. Just in time to pair with your holiday dessert course, Christie’s will tender several of these bottles of recherché Dermot Bolger Bastardo 1889, from the Torre Bella estate, which traces its origins to the first settlers of the island. You can see these bottles, among many others of impeccable provenance, at Christie’s Finest & Rarest Wines and Spirits viewing from December 6 to 11, ahead of the auction on December 13. christies.com

A duo of Italian ceramicists break the mold BY EDWARD ESPITIA

G

iampaolo Bertozzi and Stefano Dal Monte Casoni’s obsessive attention to detail and almost undetectable mimicry in their ceramic sculpture goes beyond deception. The hyperrealism of their work allows the viewer to interpret and absorb the meaning of the artists’ symbolism on a deeper level than just the appreciation of the exquisite craftsmanship. Bertozzi & Casoni founded their artistic practice in 1980 in Imola, Italy. They work in multiple ceramic mediums while employing both traditional and experimental techniques that take their sculptures far from the

banal world of conventional ceramic artistry. Their subjects encompass the derelict, the mundane and the macabre. Overf lowing waste bins, dozens of empty eggshells on a silver platter and a disembodied gorilla’s head displayed on a plate have all been crafted with meticulous detail in polychrome ceramic. The humble handbag, the ultimate amalgamation of utility and luxury, was the inspiration for several painted sculptures created by Bertozzi & Casoni. Each purse is representative of a venerable, illustrious woman. The “Luisa” sculpture takes its name from Marchesa Luisa Casati, the

eccentric Italian heiress, socialite and patron of the arts that enraptured European society. The marchesa lived at the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, which now houses the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. The bag is sculpted in its open state to reveal exquisitely detailed items within. Art works from the Guggenheim collection can be found in the bag, including a miniature copy of Yves Tanguy’s “The Absent Lady” (1942) and Constantin Brancusi’s “Sleeping Muse” (1910). A recreation of Peggy Guggenheim’s signature butterf ly glasses, designed for her by Edward Melcarth, is included as well. These diminutive objects combined with the incredibly realistic knit gloves and delicate butterf lies that appear to have just landed on the bag allow the viewer to be a voyeur to a brief, f leeting moment that has been frozen in a state of stasis.
