Tonia Allen

Decades-long music instructor at DCC

Tonia started teaching in 1981. She trained in Music Education in Bellingham, Washington and trained in the Orff method at the Vancouver Academy of Music.

An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Tonia started at Dunbar Community Centre in 1985. Over the years, she taught Orff programs, flute, guitar and recorder lessons to all ages. She had an impact on many children and their families in the community and she will be deeply missed.

Nassrin Farquharson

Long-time watercolour painting teacher at DCC

Nassrin was born in Iran and passed away in Dec 2022. She went to nursing school in England where she met her husband, Duart Farquharson, a journalist. They married in 1963. Nassrin worked as a nurse, and a laboratory technician, among other occupations as she and her husband moved from Paris, to Cairo, London, Washington, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, Tofino, and finally Vancouver.

Nassrin was a contributing member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and a volunteer at the studio on Granville Island for years. She was also a long-standing member and volunteer at Brock House.

Painting was a passion. She learned and practiced painting in oils, acrylics and watercolour. She began teaching watercolour painting at the Dunbar Community Centre sometime in the ‘90’s and taught right up until the fall 2022.

We will miss her deeply.

Love to learn piano but don't know where to start? You may have admirable potential but don't know how to develop it. This introductory piano class is designed to inspire young beginners to recognize their talents. Theory and musical notation help them understand melodies. Clapping and singing will help them develop rhythm. Students will be able to play some simple tunes by the end of the class. They will also recognize their potential and know how to polish it.

A creative and intuitive approach to music learning. With goals and learning styles varying from student to student, we help you first determine what you want to achieve, so we can make it our goal to get your there! From the basic beginners to preparing exams, all students will be encouraged to tap into their creative sides and be taught to express themselves through improvisation. Each session is 30 minutes. If you're learning at a grade 5 level or above, please book two half hour sessions to ensure enough time for the lesson. All music books and materials purchased separately and ordered through teachers. Visit www.musicalexpressions.ca for more info. No class Oct 9 & Nov 13.

Waste Reduction Week: Free Swap Toolkit

Imagine a local marketplace where you give up items you no longer need and find products that you can use. Now stop imagining! Free Swaps Toolkit is a way to declutter your home, share items you don't need any longer, and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Between 11:30am and 2:30pm, drop off 1 or 2 clean, "portable under one arm" items that are in good working condition, and then stay and browse the swap tables for something you can use. Browsing starts at noon and ends at 3pm. You don't have to bring something to take something. No registration required. We reserve the right to refuse any items we don't think are suitable, accepted items include: books, clothing, toys, housewares, art, and small electronics. So stop, drop and shop at the Free Swap!

Catch Basin Community Cleanup (All Ages)

Looking for a way to give back to your community and have fun at the same time? Join your neighbours for a Community Catch Basin and Litter Cleanup. During autumn, when leaves fall from the trees all at once, street flooding can occur if the leaves block the catch basins. Keeping catch basins clear is easy, and only takes a few minutes each time. But it goes a long way in keeping neighbourhoods safe by ensuring that rain flows freely through catch basins and out to receiving bodies of water like Burrard Inlet. Guests are welcomed, given equipment, and provided an orientation of what to do and where. They will return to the site to drop-off their equipment, and be offered refreshment.

Talkin’ ‘bout My Generation: The Music of the 60s

When looking at the music of the 60s, we’ll pose the question “Does art in the form of music change society or does it merely reflect the times”. The 60s was a decade of cultural and societal revolution, changes that have reverberated to the present day, and the soundtrack of that decade was the soundtrack of our lives. Was it just because the largest demographic, the Baby Boomers, lived it and loved it, or was it truly great music? We’ll go back and take a closer look at the different genres that dominated the music of the 60s and make our own determinations.
