PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Springtime at Dunbar Community Centre
As we bid adieu to Winter and some of its snowy outdoor fun, I am very pleased to see some warmer weather and the great events it brings. We enjoyed the Family Day event at the centre in February and now our focus turns to Spring day camps and the Easter Bunny! We are holding a children’s egg hunt March 30th from 11:00am-1:00pm.
The Dunbar Community Centre Association’s Annual General Meeting is on April 24 at 6pm. Further information about this will be posted to our social handles and website.
Summer Day Camps for children 6-12 years are from July 2–August 23. Details of our weekly themes and activities will be available soon. Check our website for more information. Make sure to register early as camps usually fill up fast!
A special thank you to all the youth volunteers who helped with our programs and special events.
We are very pleased to announce that Aaron Friend Lettner was the successful artist for our two-year pilot for Artists in Communities (AIC) in 2024 and 2025. The purpose of the AIC program is to encourage a wide variety of interactions between artists and community members, with a focus on intergenerational connection among youth and seniors. Aaron has started his residency by sharing his skills with bookmaking with our youth. We are very excited to see what his residency will bring. Keep an eye out for him at our upcoming special events such as Easter, Earth Week, Youth Week, and more!
Keep an eye on our website where we post about upcoming events and to see program offerings at dunbarcentre.org/dunbar.
If you have program suggestions, or are interested in volunteering at the centre, please email us at dunbarcca@gmail.com
For any registration questions about existing programs, please contact centre staff at 604.222.6060.
Wishing you all a wonderful welcome to Spring.

Small Steps Choir Program (8-12 yrs) NEW
An introduction to choral singing for complete beginners in a positive, encouraging, fun, and small classroom where the instructor can cater to the unique learning needs of every student. Currently, many elementary students in Vancouver do not have opportunities to engage with singing and choral music at an early age. My goal is to help students discover their passion for singing and music, gain confidence, build teamwork skills, and foster friendships with other kids in the community that share their interests. Activities will include doing vocal warmups, practicing basic choral singing techniques (e.g. matching pitch, harmonizing, breath control, posture), learning performance etiquette, and singing a diverse repertoire of songs together.

Yin Yoga
Yin yoga is a slow paced passive style of yoga that incorporates floor based poses that are held for 3-5 mins. The practice is designed to target the area underneath your muscles (fascia) and change the shape of the muscles that in turn improves flexibility. Energetically, it helps to balance and enhance the feminine energy. A special breathing technique is used with all the poses to activate the parasympathetic nervous system that helps you to stay in difficult stretch poses for a longer duration. This practice will help you to improve your range of motion & flexibility, posture & reduce stress, anxiety and chances of injuries. This is great for people who are already active or people who would like to have a more active lifestyle.

Artist in Communities Meet Aaron Friend Lettner!
Aaron Friend Lettner makes unusual books.
Working primarily with photography, Aaron traverses the crossways of culture, memory and place. His work is distinguished by its esoteric flair and he sees bookmaking as a ritual act, where seen and unseen worlds elide.
Aaron received the inaugural Burtynsky Grant in 2016 for Doorways; and a Canadian national book design award from the Alcuin Society in 2022 for his work on anglepoise; which toured in Canada, Japan and Germany. His books are held in special collections at the National Library of Germany and Simon Fraser University.
With over a decade of experience in various forms of storytelling, as well as a plethora of public works and arts-based programming, Aaron will now work alongside older and younger generations at the Dunbar Community Centre for the next two years. Through a series of community-based workshops and longer-term projects, Dunbar residents will have an opportunity to learn new creative languages, specifically related to hand-binding books, weaving and ritual theatre.
Keep an eye out for Aaron at our special events, upcoming workshops, and programs this spring and summer season!
