Triple tragedy shocks Dundalk community

The Dundalk community were left shocked and saddened last Thursday as three tragedies unfolded in the space of 24 hours. People woke up on Thursday morning to the news that Dundalk gardaí were investigating the discovery of a body of a woman who was found dead in unexplained circumstances at a residence in Bridge St.

Shortly afterwards a man was critically injured when falling bricks from a building on Clanbrassil St. struck him while he was walking along the footpath. A number of bricks fell from the top of a building which is currently been used as a constituency office for Fine Gael Senator John McGahon.

A third tragedy unfolded later that same day when the body of missing teenager Vincent Dillon was recovered in the Castletown River. The 19 year old had been reported missing from his home on Sunday May 14th.

Later that evening Gardaí confirmed that they had commenced a murder investigation in relation to the discovery of a woman in her 60’s who was later named as Catherine henry.

the 62-year old was originally from West Dublin but had moved to Dundalk in recent years where she was known locally for her work with Dundalk Soup Kitchens where she volunteered to help provide free meals to the homeless.

Gardaí suspected foul play after her body was discovered in an apartment on Bridge Street last Wednesday night.

A postmortem confirmed those suspicions noting that Mrs henry had died follow-

ing a violent attack. An update from the Garda Press Office confirmed on Tuesday morning that no arrests have yet been made to date in the investigation although it has been reported that they are following a definite line of enquiry.

Not long after the news of the murder began circulating around Dundalk, a second incident occurred as a building on Clanbrassil Street partially collapsed with the resulting falling rubble injuring a man who was walking along the footpath. the man

Commenting on the events of last thursday, Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú said: ‘It has been an incredibly sad and tragic 24 hours in Dundalk and indeed in Louth.

‘Dundalk experienced a lot of sadness yesterday with the murder of Catherine henry in Bridge Street, the injuring of a local man in an accident in Clanbrassil Street and the recovery of a body during the search for a young Dundalk man.

‘Later that day, tragedy

struck in Drogheda when a man in his eighties was killed in a traffic accident. there is no doubt that the community in Dundalk is reeling from the events here and my thoughts are with the families of those who have died and have been injured in these incidents.

‘It was a particularly tragic day for those involved. however I am aware there was a lot of sharing of images and also the posting of speculation and rumour online which only added to the pain of the families and loved ones af-

fected by these tragedies.

‘I would ask people to refrain for sharing rumours, conjecture or commentary on social media. We need to deal with the issue of social media companies and their responsibilities as regards what they allow to be shared online and their responsibility in adding to families’ hurt.

‘I would appeal for anyone with information on any of yesterday’s events, to contact Dundalk Gardaí on 042 9388400 or the confidential line on 1800 666 111’.

The funeral of Vincent Dillon will take place this morning after his body was recovered from the Castletown River last Thursday afternoon. The 19 year old was last seen at his home in Dundalk in the early morning of Sunday 14th May. A missing person appeal was launched but Gardaí stood that search down as they confirmed a body had been recovered from the Castletown River.

“Following the discovery of a body in Dundalk, Co. Louth on Thursday, 25th May 2023, the missing person appeal for Vincent Dillon (19 years) has been stood down.

“An Garda Síochána would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance.

“No further media action is required and no further information is available at this time,” read the statement.

A statement from Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue confirmed that they had helped recover the body.

“The Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue and Recovery Service paged at 10.00am on Thursday 25.5.23.

The call received was to provide additional assistance to a search team from the Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue.

The team who had been conducting search operations in Dundalk for the last number of days for a missing local person had successfully located a body on marsh land / river bed area.

We dispatched additional land units and equipment from the Drogheda base, On arrival both teams formed a plan and navigated through marsh land to recover the body.

Crews then transferred the body to a nearby extraction point where a handover was done with Dundalk Gardai,” read the statement.

Vincent’s funeral will take place today (Wednesday 31st May) with removal at 10:40am to St Joseph’s Church, Castletown arriving for funeral mass at 11:30am. Burial afterwards in the adjoining ceremony.

Louth County Council have stated that it is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure their structure is not likely to be dangerous to any person or property following an accident on Clanbrassil Street last thursday where a man was injured by falling bricks following a partial collapse of the top of the building.

When asked by the Dundalk Leader what the process was with regards to ensuring buildings are safe the following statement was issued.

“It is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure their structure is not likely to be dangerous to any person or property – Louth County Council welcomes reports of dangerous structures and will investigate same where reported. If a dangerous structure is brought to our attention it will be inspected. If the assessment raises concerns, the Authority has the option of issuing a dangerous structures notice.

“this notice permits the Authority or requires the owner in the first instance to carry out immediate works to fence off the property to prevent public access. the Authority may also require the owners to carry out temporary works to address safety concerns. the Authority may carry out independent detailed inspections or require the owner to engage a chartered engineer/ surveyor to carry out inspections & submit a report to the Authority. this report in conjunction with the Authority’s own findings may lead to further works being required by the owner

to make the building safe. When these works have been completed further inspections are required to assess if those works have addressed the safety concerns.

“there is no statutory requirement for the Authority to check buildings of a certain age. It would be the responsibility of all owners to ensure that their properties regardless of age are safe,” explained the local authority.

When asked if a statutory notice had ever been sent to the owner of the building which partially collapsed Louth County Council confirmed that a dangerous structures notice was served following the partial collapse of the building. No previous notices had been served.

result in Louth County Council checking other buildings around town to ensure that they are structurally sound?

“there are no plans for the Authority to do this. I refer you to the previous answer regarding owner responsibilities. Louth County Council would encourage property owners to regularly inspect their buildings to ensure safety.

Louth County Council also stated that there was no evidence at this stage to suggest that other works on a nearby building may have been a contributory factor in the collapse of this building.

“Investigations are continuing to determine the root cause of the collapse. We cannot comment further on an ongoing investigation,” concluded the statement.

No increase in accidents on M1 since route lighting switched off

ReSPoNDING to an email from Louth tD Fergus o’Dowd, the tII (transport Infrastructure Ireland, the State agency for road and public transport infrastructure) confirmed that route lighting at junctions 7, 8 and 9 on the M1 motorway have been switched off as part of a suite of initiatives in relation to energy usage reduction measures.

In his email, Deputy o’Dowd outlined concerns he had received from motorists who use the M1 motorway and who were unhappy at the lack of appropriate lighting at junctions 7, 8 and 9. the Fine Gael tD asked if accident rates had increased in these locations since the lights were switched off and if there were plans to turn them back on with renewable sources.

In response, a representative from the tII confirmed that the lighting had been switched off and stated that this has had no implications for road safety.

The first of these lighting revisions occurred in 2017. tII’s strategy on revised route lighting reflects the significant changes in route lighting design standards since 2007 which have identified a greatly reduced requirement for the ‘lit area’ and, by implication, a significant amount of surplus lighting along sections of motorways constructed pre-2007.

“A study of the collision rate at locations where lighting has been switched off has concluded that there has been no implication for road safety. the collision rate for the three junctions referred to in your correspondence (Junctions 7 - 9 ) have either remained the same or have reduced since the last collision

analysis on the national road network was carried out, prior to the lights being turned off. there was therefore no increase in collision rate at any of these locations.

“While the current europe wide energy security concerns and rising energy costs have placed a sharper focus on energy consumption, the reduction in route lighting initiative arose from Ireland’s National Energy Efficiency Action Plan which was launched in 2009 and set out several objectives to improve Ireland’s energy efficiency by the year 2020. A national improvement target of 20% was set, with a higher target of energy efficiency improvement of 33% for the public sector. the Public Sector Energy Efficiency Strategy published in 2020 credits road lighting improvements as having played a significant role in the achievement of

these targets.

“For the next decade, there are more demanding european, national and public sector targets relating to energy and emissions. the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021 establishes a legally binding framework with clear targets and commitments set in law and ensures the necessary structures and processes to allow the achievement of our national, eu and international climate goals and obligations in the near and long term. these commitments include emission reductions of 7% per annum, 51% by 2030 and a net zero target/goal by 2050. More recently, the 2023 Climate Action Plan also places specific obligations on public sector bodies such as tII. Reducing route lighting consumption will continue to play a significant role in tII’s efforts,” concluded the statement.

DuNDALk musicians Andrew hendy and Andrea Corr delighted the audience of the final episode of The Late Late Show hosted by Ryan Tubridy on Friday last.

Andrew and Andrea took part in a lively trad session alongside a number of wellknown Irish musicians for Tubridy’s final episode.

“It was the last hurrah for Ryan. The following day myself and the rest of the band, The Mary Wallopers, flew to Manchester for a festival,” said the Avenue Road man.

“The Mary Wallopers have a busy few months ahead

of us. We found out two or three months ago that we will be playing Glastonbury this summer.

“We have actually played in Glastonbury three times before. We played at the underground Piano Bar.”

Andrew added: “It’s a secret stage that’s like a hole in the ground. This year will be different. We will be playing on a massive stage with an 8,000 person capacity.

“We are buzzing to go back to Glastonbury. Besides that we are playing in Paris on the Wednesday before Glastonbury starts.

“We will do two gigs at

Glastonbury. It’s going to be insane. Then later this summer we have festivals all over europe and we will go to America in October to perform.”

he continued: “The rest of the year is carnage as we have a second album coming out at the end of the summer.

“It’s so different to the pandemic. The Mary Wallopers are so busy now. It’s a feast or famine scenario.”

Keith and Danielle’s fund raiser for Feileacain

A DuNDALK couple who lost their son in 2021 are fundraising for a charity called Feileacain which helps families all over Ireland who have lost babies.

Keith Morris and Danielle McKeown from Bothar na Feirme on the Blackrock Road were devastated when they lost their son, Logan, on February 1, 2021.

“Danielle was 31 weeks pregnant when she woke up in bad pain. We went to our Lady of Lourdes hospital, Drogheda and sadly the medical team there said that the baby was already dead by the time we got to the hospital,” said Keith.

“they did a Covid-19 test on Danielle and it came back positive. She had been feeling a bit run down that week but thought no more if it.

“Danielle went into labour and Logan made an appearance just after 8pm. they asked if we wanted an autopsy to find out what had happened.”

Keith added: “We said we would like an autopsy and went home and got Logan back a few days later.

“We buried him in Dowdallshill with Danielle’s younger sister. We had to wait around 11 to 12 weeks for the results of the

autopsy.

“Danielle had Covid-19 and it got into the placenta and stopped the blood flow. We went through a lot but thankfully we have since had good news.”

he continued: “We have a little girl called tia now. She was born on April 5, 2022 so she is just over a year old.

“on the day we lost Logan, a bereavement nurse sat us down and told us about the charity called Feileacain and what they do with bereaved parents.

“then I saw a notice on Facebook about a Feileacain charity soccer match for Dads who have lost at least one child.”

Keith has been selected to play in the charity match which is due to take place in Irishtown stadium on Saturday, June 17.

every father who plays in the match will be presented with a jersey that has their child’s name on the back of jersey before the match and this is the jersey they wear in the match.

“It’s a big family fun day and everyone is invited to it. the aim of the match is to raise funds for the charity so if anybody would like to donate,” said Keith.

“I have sponsor cards and all money raised through sponsor cards and on the day of the match will go directly to the charity.”

Rally for Ruby Casey-Mulligan

the latest in a series of fundraisers for local girl Ruby Casey Mulligan will take place in the Lisdoo on the 17th of June.

Ruby has a rare auto inflammatory condition that requires constant immunosupression. It has been discovered that the medication that has been enabling her to go about her day as normal as possible has caused serious complications to her health and so she can’t continue this course of treatment. her family have been left with no choice but to take her to Newcastle for a stem cell transplant.

the transplant has been in discussion for a number of years and has been put off due to trying different combination of medicines.

In March, Ruby and her family were told to prepare to go to Newcastle for August but recently that decision has been put back but will go ahead soon. the purpose of the

fundraising is to assist Ruby and her family with the sudden relocation and living expenses they are due to face as they will need to be in Newcastle for a number of months during and post transplant.

and family members of Ruby are holding a race night on the 17th of June in the Lisdoo Bar and Restaurant in Dundalk.

the organisers have appealed for anybody in a position to help to consider sponsoring a race for the event.

“I’m from Riverstown; my Mum and Dad had a farm there. I went to school in Mullaghbuoy NS where all my nieces and nephews go today,” said helen.

“I went to secondary school in St Michael’s in Omeath and then I went on to Cathal Brugha Street to study hotel and catering.

“Brian and I met while working in Ashford Castle in Co Mayo. he’s from Limerick and we got married in 2000.”

the support service has taken delivery of four Meta Quest 2 headsets which allow members to discover the streets of New York, take in an art exhibition, visit Graceland, or hop on a roller-coaster, without leaving the resource centre in Quayside Business Park.

With co-operation from RehabCare staff member Stephen Caraher, SchooVR and Meta teamed up to sponsor the virtual reality headsets enabling members of the service to access new and exciting opportunities.

Stephen spoke about the possibilities that the virtual reality (VR) headsets have afforded the members of the service. “In RehabCare Quayside, virtual reality has been introduced in an unimaginable way which will allow members in our service to progress in

Finnian oakes chosen for european Cybersecurity Challenge

FINNIAN Oakes from Coláiste Chú Chulainn has been chosen to engage with the european Cybersecurity Challenge. The initiative by the european union Agency for Cybersecurity (eNISA) aims to enhance cybersecurity talent across europe and connect highly skilled individuals with industry leading organizations.

Transition year student Finnian Oakes was chosen to take part in a boot camp with students from around Ireland as part of the selection process for the Irish national team.

Finnian explained: “I spent Saturday 6th of May working on security-related challenges from domains such as web security, mobile security, crypto puzzles, reverse engineering, and forensics, which the participants have to solve in order to collect points. The individuals with the most points win the competition

A SPoNSoReD walk in aid of SAFe (Suicide Awareness for everyone) will take place at the Navvy Bank, Point Road on June 23rd. the walk is being organised by a number of local groups including the Irish Wheelchair Association, Rehabcare and St John of Gods.

tember and provides a free confidential counselling service. the charity also has a mobile unit which visits villages and communities in the mid-Louth area to raise awareness of mental health issues as well as the importance of seeking help.
