Midsummer (a play with songs) October 2015
?
Welcome to Dundee Rep’s Autumn Season
Welcome to our Autumn/Winter season in which we present two great plays from the contemporary Scottish canon – John McGrath’s ground breaking The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil and for our annual city wide community tour, David Greig’s Midsummer (a play with songs). Although they are very different stories, they are told with vibrancy and intelligence by two of Scotland’s most important theatre artists. Both pieces are energetic, life affirming works that rely on true ensemble playing and songs to celebrate with and challenge their audiences. Somehow Christmas has already drifted into our horizon, and following the success of last year’s seasonal offering of James and the Giant Peach, this year we bring you another Roald Dahl classic in the form of The Witches. It is bigger and bolder than ever before and not for the faint hearted! But we figured – what could be more important than learning how to spot a witch? And for younger audiences, we are delighted to bring Frozen Charlotte’s award winning piece for under 5s, Too Many Penguins. This magical play really does what it says on the tin – so come and join in the fun with Penguina, Polar Bear and a whole lot of other penguins. Alongside our Ensemble shows we continue to present a varied and complimentary programme of touring work. We are thrilled to be bringing Vox Motus, the National Theatre
of Scotland, and the Tianjin People’s Arts Theatre’s award winning production of Dragon to Dundee following their run at the Edinburgh International Festival. And on a smaller scale but no less exciting, is Tamasha Theatre Company’s My Name Is… a verbatim story based on the headlining story of Glasgow girl Molly Campbell, and also Cumbernauld Theatre’s touring production of a new contemporary sex-comedy by Liz Lochhead, What Goes Around Comes Around. While Scottish Dance Theatre present as part of the Made in Scotland showcase at the Edinburgh Fringe and go on to tour Mexico, we bring you three exquisite dance pieces in the form of Frida by Caroline Bowditch, For Now, I Am by Marc Brew, and Plan B for Utopia by Joan Cleville, all dance artists who have a long standing relationship with the Rep and the city. And last but certainly not least, our Creative Learning departments continue to be a hive of activity, with even more participatory and learning activities on the go including our annual Enterprise @ The Rep project, Career’s Day, Scottish Dance Theatre’s Great Big Dance Show and The Beautiful People presented as part of the Luminate Festival.

The ChevIOT, The STAg AND The BlACk, BlACk OIl by John Mcgrath directed by Joe Douglas, designed by graham Mclaren, lighting by kate Bonney, music & sound by Aly Macrae and Michael John McCarthy Wed 9 – Sat 26 September at 7.30pm Matinees: Thus 17 & 24 and Sats 19 & 26 September at 2.30pm Post Show discussion: Wed 16 September The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil tells the history and the tragedy of Scotland, performed as a Highland ceilidh, with song, humour and drama intermixed, creating a unique theatrical event, that remains as vital and relevant today as it was when 7:84 Scotland first presented it. The Cheviot was given its first public airing at the ‘What Kind of Scotland?’ conference in Edinburgh on 31 March 1973, followed by its first public performance a month later at the Aberdeen Arts Centre. What no one could have predicted at those first performances was that this revolutionary theatrical event would soon become a cornerstone of contemporary Scottish theatre.
BSLI performance: Audio described performance: Captioned performance:
This extraordinary play looks at the exploitation and economic changes in the Scottish Highlands throughout history; from the ruthless evictions of Highland crofters making way for the more economically viable Cheviot sheep in the 18th century, to the development of stag hunts in game parks in the 19th century and finally the exploitation of resources during the North Sea Oil boom of the 1970s. Written as a musical drama by John McGrath, it explores stories and experiences of Scotland’s land, sea and people across the centuries. Dundee Rep Ensemble has uniquely been granted permission to present this pivotal piece of Scottish theatre in the first professional production on the Scottish stage in more than twenty years.

The BrIDge by Annie george directed by Sarah MacDonald composer Niroshini Thambar Fri 25 – Sat 26 September at 8pm A remarkable story traced back through family memories, piecing together the short life and lost work of poet and author PM John, from Kerala India, just before Independence. Defying convention and poverty to realise his dreams, the fortunes of his family were shaped. Stories of courage and survival are uncovered, and charts his family’s later journey to the west. Travelling back from present day, The Bridge considers how our histories are told, and who tells them, and the silences in between which gives rise to myth or invention. A poetic, political and poignant solo play, exploring identity, belonging and the power of the pen. “…a rich and meditative piece of family history.” The Scotsman “…a finely wrought piece… a fierce, burning intelligence and integrity at the core of this show… The threads binding past, present and future, the concentration on language, culture and heritage, the interest in independence of all kinds… expressed through an expertly judged performance by George.” All Edinburgh Theatre Tickets: £14, Children £9, Dundee Student Pass £5. SINgIN’ I’M NO A BIlly, he’S A TIM by Des Dillon Sat 3 October at 7.30pm On the day of an Old Firm clash, a Rangers and Celtic fan end up sharing a courtroom cell. Their only hope of escape is betting on the match to pay their fines. While taking turns to watch the game on a TV through their cell door, the pair bicker their way through every entrenched cliché of ‘Scotland’s shame’ from religion to politics and national identity. But aided by their kindly turnkey Harry – whose worries for his sick grandson help put their petty quarrels into perspective – they’re forced to reach a grudging understanding. Des Dillon’s brilliant satire of bigotry in Scotland and its connection with the nation’s two biggest football teams first scored critical acclaim at the Fringe in 2005, and has since been a near-constant fixture in theatres in Scotland. Warning: this production contains strong language which may be unsuitable for children. Tickets: £16, Concs £12, Friends £11, Children £9, Dundee Student Pass £5. Groups and Standby available.
