The JE Dunn Story When John Ernest Dunn founded JE Dunn Construction in 1924, he wanted to do more than build buildings. He wanted to build relationships, too. So Dunn founded his company with strong values, both economic and human. Whether he dealt with clients or craftsmen, he believed in treating all fairly and with respect. Further, Dunn believed that a successful company should then give something back to the community in which it operates. JE Dunn Construction Company is a family and employee owned commercial general contractor with expertise in construction management, program management and design/ build projects. With a volume of $4.2 billion for 2019, we are ranked as the 17th largest domestic building contractor in the nation by Engineering NewsRecord. Over 80% of our business is derived from existing or referral client relationships. We believe this speaks volumes about the quality of the projects we build and the depth of our services. With more than 3,400 employees and 23 offices coast to coast, JE Dunn is well-positioned to service clients with multiple locations and project types. The firm is financially sound with a bonding capacity of more than $5 billion and the capacity of bonding a single project up to and including $500 million. JE Dunn’s South-Central region consisting of Houston, Austin, Dallas and Oklahoma, began more than 25 years ago providing clients with general contracting needs for commercial, residential and mixed-use needs. JE Dunn Construction has been building in the Houston area since 1997 and is currently working on several notable projects including Gables Westcreek High-rise Residential; The Harris County Pets Center; multiple projects for Harris County Health System, and soon will be breaking ground on the new City of Houston Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza and the new Vehicle Maintenance Facility for the Houston Airport System. World War II afforded J.E. “Ernie” Dunn not only many project opportunities, but a chance to show the country the philosophies and values by which he was guided. Given only 120 working days to complete the Kansas City Quartermaster Depot for the Army Corps of Engineers, Ernie had two shifts working seven days a week. They finished the project a month early and under budget, and even that wasn’t good enough for him.
A World War I veteran with two sons, Ernie Jr. and Bill, in the military, he thought it unpatriotic to profit from war. He asked the corps to reduce his contract so that the company was paid only job costs—no profit. The story appeared in papers around the country, and letters of gratitude poured in, including one from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. With this gesture, Ernie Dunn Sr. solidly established his company’s reputation for integrity, the foundation on which it is built.

In-House MEP Coordination With in-house, MEP staff, we have a greater ability to cost-effectively evaluate design options, coordinate MEP bid documents, and ensure bids received are thorough and complete. Once construction starts, we follow through with on-site field inspections. Collaborative Project Delivery We deliver projects through a highly interactive process, involving all stakeholders, which is focused on driving decisions and actions that reduce waste, increase value, maximize technology, and control costs, regardless of contract delivery method.
