For four decades the nonprofit organization Four States Ag Expo has presented a three-day event for regional residents to learn all about farm and ranch management, from honing new training and riding skills to raising livestock. The group offers the most innovative and inclusive agriculture show in the region. Volunteers can assist attendees at every turn. Parking is free, and shuttles will be available to transport visitors from the ticket gate to the booth and event areas. And veterans receive free admission on Saturday.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT

San Juan Mounted archers will return to perform exciting demonstrations. The expo features instructional equestrian workshops with professional trainers Randy Helm, Mark and Mardi Anson and Brandy Stevenson. Professional horse chiropractor Kathy Klix and farrier Matt Lawlor will host demonstrations to help others keep horses healthy.

Activities for the next generation of farmers are some of the best traditions. There’s a Beef Show, cross-cut branding, face painting and an ice cream eating contest sponsored by ColdStone Creamery. Children can also enjoy seeing farm animals on the grounds, the CALF facility and trying to catch a chicken to take home.

H HISTORY

Ag Expo celebrates 40 years As one of the longest running agricultural events in the region, the Four States Agricultural Exposition celebrates its 40th anniversary this month. The annual three-day event includes fun activities, educational demonstrations and handson workshops for attendees every March. Show attendance typically fluctuates from year to year based on the available clinics, educational seminars, special guests and weather. While the volunteer board can’t control the climate, they often work long hours over the winter months to produce the spring show, relying heavily on additional volunteers to recruit educators, entertainers, guest speakers and vendors. The educators, entertainers and guest speakers increase awareness of the events and attract more attendees. Vendors participate to showcase the variety of products and services available to make agricultural operations more efficient, from financial assistance and insurance to animal health and nutrition products. According to previous coordinators and participants, Four States Ag Expo began as a marketing and networking exercise for collegeaged students at San Juan Basin Technical School

in 1983. Over the years, the different boards and organizers have adapted the event to serve the broader community and highlight the complexities of an essential industry. Since its inception, the Four States Agricultural Exposition has helped young people learn about the diversity in agricultural employment. As the show evolved to appeal to a wider audience, attendees enjoyed guest presentations and educational seminars that enhanced their confidence in balancing the variables, such as economy, financing and weather. After the Ag Expo in 2002, San Juan Basin Technical School, which organized the show through their Agricultural Education Department, announced it could no longer support the event due to budget constraints. An ad-hoc committee formed to continue the event, and relied on sponsors and space rental fees to cover costs for the event in 2003. The eight-member board then determined the best way to fund the show was to form a nonprofit organization focused on agricultural education. For a year, the nonprofit organization operated under the Dolores Soil Conservation District. In 2004, the Four States Agricultural Exposition became its own 501-c3. The designation helped the show receive funding to improve the access to agricultural education and serve an expanded, albeit younger, audience. In the last two decades, the board of directors has worked to advance the level of training workshops available, expand the equine-related events and continue developing youth interest in agricultural programs. As the Four States Ag Expo celebrates its 40th iteration, the event continues to help the Four Corners community gather to discover a more sophisticated understanding of the strategies and solutions to manage a successful, sustainable agricultural operation of any size.

Get Involved O RGANI ZATI O N S EEKS B OAR D MEMB ERS, VO LUNTEERS The Four States Agricultural Exposition is a three-day event filled with farm animals and fun activities. But like an old-fashioned barn raising, it takes a great deal of effort to organize. Board members plan the expo and schedule entertainment as well as recruit clinicians and volunteers. These volunteers provide directions for attendees, drive shuttles and assist exhibitors, sponsors and vendors with preparing and dismantling their booths. During the expo, the board is actively planning its next big event. While answering questions, guiding volunteers and managing the show, the board members also begin scouting for new clinicians, demonstrations, entertainment and more volunteers. To participate in the annual expo, visit the Four States Ag Expo information booth or contact a board member.
