editor’s note
As usual, June has been an exciting and jam-packed month! Have you all heard the news that Johnny Depp is newly single? Form an orderly queue ladies! There has been so much going on lately, and most importantly... we have had a gorgeous cat in the office (which has been by far the most spoilt team member!) This month we bring you an exclusive chat with Lydia Mirco, Bounemouth’s very own swimwear and lingerie designer, and we review the delights of the Isle of Wight Festival. We particularly loved rocking out to Pearl Jam, raving to Tinie Tempah and singing along with Jessie J as the sun came out and the mud began to dry. For full review and pictures, flick to p04. We are so privileged to live in such a beautiful coastal area so make sure you get on down to the beach as much as you can and make the most of the summer! If you still haven’t bought that allimportant bikini yet then don’t worry, turn to p10 for some fashion inspiration. Massive congratulations are in order for Zoukinis Restaurant in Westbourne who have been recently been awarded ‘Best Vegan Breakfast’ by PETA. This is such an exciting achievement for Zoukinis and we urge you to check out this buzzing restaurant even if you aren’t a vegetarian. Brand new to Bournemouth this month, is Blue Mango on Exeter Road which serves up a delicious combination of Thai and Indian food. See p30 for our review. Also inside this month’s magazine, we give you the lowdown on the best summer beauty products from Clinique and bring you tips on meditation. What are you waiting for? Dive in and get reading! Make sure you follow us on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news and local updates @DV8Bournemouth.

MUD, DRINK AND BE MERRY DV8’s Alice Rook was thrilled to attend Isle of Wight Festival 2012. Here she gives her lowdown on the weekend’s antics…
M
uddy and messy and absolutely brilliant… that is how I would best describe Isle of Wight 2012! After pitching my tent and locating the nearest beer grotto, I was off to explore with my friends. There was so much going on over the four days that there almost wasn’t enough time to fit everything in! I sat on the Ferris Wheel and munched on candy floss, I had my face painted with glitter and bright flowers, and I tasted the delights of vegetarian Pieminister and mushy peas (surely the best pie I have ever tasted!) The music line-up was insanely good. It focused on nostalgia acts, especially the headliners which included Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Tom Petty. Bruce Springsteen particularly nailed it, bringing his unique charisma and stamina to the stage. Example absolutely rocked his set, getting everyone jumping up down and Lana Del Ray was undoubtedly America’s hottest export there. My personal highlight was the incredible Jessie J. The percussive nature of her voice carried far across the muddy fields and her rendition of Usher’s ‘Climax’ was particularly memorable. Despite the monsoon and the waterlogged car parks, the evacuated tents and the mass of abandoned wellies, I had an amazing time and have some everlasting memories to take away with me… Bring on IOW 2013!

ON MISSING BOURNEMOUTH..... Working in Paris has been a total dream come true, and I have loved getting to explore all that the city has to offer. Bournemouth will always be my number one though, and I miss the beach so much! The man-made beach in Paris isn’t nearly as good! When I’m away from home I crave a good portion of Fish & Chips... you can’t beat it. LUXURY LIFE..... Working for Disney is so exciting. There are three parades a day and celebrities regularly come into the park and watch. I have spotted Dita Von Teese, Emma Bunton and Keith Lemon! Oh, and Coleen Rooney was there with her child too. BMTH BEST BITS..... When I am home you will find me sipping gorgeous cocktails in Aruba or The Slug and Lettuce, and of course I miss Topshop like mad.

cissor Sisters are one of those phenomenal bands that have really changed the electro-pop music scene and contributed to the industry. They have been around for over ten years and have produced album after album of successful tracks that consistently get you up out of your chair to dance. Always quirky and controversial, the band’s eclectic madness is matched with a sexy sensibility that outshines a lot of other chart music. They have had numerous hit singles over the years including ‘Filthy Gorgeous,’ ‘Mary’ and of course ‘Comfortably Numb.’ DV8’s Alice was thrilled to catch up with Del Marquis the guitarist. Del has been with Scissor Sisters from the word go and has even turned his hand to writing some of his own material over the years. Del chats to us about what it was like working with Calvin Harris, the new album ‘Magic Hour’ and ponders if there are any downfalls to fame… Congratulations on the release of your fourth studio album ‘Magic Hour’ with Scissor Sisters. What has the reaction been like to your debut single ‘Only The Horses’ so far since its release? It’s been great. We’ve been working so hard. You know, nothing comes without hard work. So we’re doing what we do on a cycle: doing TV shows, going to radio stations and doing interviews and so on and so forth. The fans absolutely love the record as much as we love it, which is brilliant. We chose ‘Only The Horses’ as the debut single from the album because it is so concise and is reflective of the record as whole. The album is a collection of different styles; it is probably the most like our first record in that respect. You say your album is a combination of styles, but if you were forced to choose one word to sum it up, what word would you choose? ‘Scissors Radio’ - it’s kind of like if you were flipping the dials through all our different styles then this is what you would get. How does ‘Magic Hour’ differ from your second and third album? Our second record had so much to do with a pre-meditated idea of making a pop album to show that the first record wasn’t a fluke and to show that we deserved to be there. ‘Night Work’ our third album was really our most cohesive record - from song to song there’s a theme, a feeling and an ambiance. Your new album showcases work with Calvin Harris and Azealia Banks and numerous other people. What was it like working with Calvin?
It really depends on the country! But yes, I have definitely been sent some bizarre things in the mail, which I find very creepy indeed! How are the fans different in each country? Well, we definitely reach more mums and grans in the UK! As time goes on, bands have a centre of fans that will keep following you no matter what. Obviously we have experienced that moment of being like a cultural touchstone where you’re reaching everyone and their cousin. Most of our fans are pretty respectful and they enjoy our energy. Scissor Sisters are known and loved for their energetic performances. How much planning and preparation goes into each performance? We spend a couple of weeks rehearsing; see what works and what doesn’t. We play around with the set and get to throw away songs that we’re dead tired of playing. We get to bring B-sides and we have more fun the longer we do it. Our crew is fantastic. As time goes on, you build the right working relationships. So much goes in to it. It really is a family and a dynamic that anyone starting a band really should be aware of. The first thing most people think of when they think of Scissor Sisters is undoubtedly Jake and Ana’s flamboyant stage presence. Do you outwardly try to take a backseat on stage? All of us on stage exhibit exactly what we need to do. We are each in our right role. I have my moments, but I know that I would never be suited to the upfront role with the microphone. I don’t think I would be able to handle that kind of stress. I prefer to be able to hide if I am having a bad night, because you know I can’t fake it. What is the proudest moment in your career to date? I have a few… The moment that touched me the most was our Live 8 performance. It was a reflection of where we were at the time. The amount of bands and artists who were backstage was phenomenal – it was so exciting, it was a real fan boy moment for me. Any band is lucky to have that moment once. I always wanted to be a musician when I was growing up. Do you think there are any downfalls to fame?
He is such a sweet Scottish guy and we had done a tour with him a few months back. It is Calvin’s moment right now. He simply has a knack for making songs that really jump off the radio. We had ‘Only The Horses’ worked up pretty well, you know – mixed in our own production style and we asked him to sprinkle some of his magic dust over the record… the rest is history!
It’s not a downfall but I think you end up having to do a lot more selfreflection. A lot of people want to be in front of a camera or on stage because they think it will satisfy an element of their ego to be recognised. But most of the time that comes from insecurity. So if you do this, it flushes that out and you realise that there is a way to treat it like any other job and to be professional with it. You don’t need that attention and your ego doesn’t need that to survive. Once you have exhausted all possibilities you start to look inward, and that’s when the self-reflection truly begins.
How would you say being a Scissor Sister in 2012 is different from being a Scissor Sister in 2003 when you first started out?
As well as finding fame with Scissor Sisters, you are also known as being a successful songwriter. Where do you get your inspiration?
Well we are more mature people now, but in essence we are not that much different. We are still making music for the same reason. We have had the luxury of having so many wonderful experiences and now that we have been around for more than ten years, I would argue that we all have lives more. We are able to develop our personal lives more. When we started, our life was the band, but as time goes on, you have more time to develop other aspects of your life.
When I am in the Studio with the Sisters I am genuinely a third wheel when it comes to production. I wanted to experience it for myself; it was really just a personal test and something I am so proud of.
When you first started out on your Scissor Sisters journey, did you ever anticipate in your wildest dreams that you would be as successful as you are? No, we didn’t. There was no pre-meditation for it, it just happened. I believe this to be the sweetest kind of success. What would you say a typical Scissor Sisters groupie is like? Do you ever get sent weird and wonderful things by fans?
10 | DV8 BOURNEMOUTH.COM
You were at Glastonbury Festival a few years back and you performed with Kylie. What was that experience like? It was amazing. I just remember being distinctly happy and I was living and breathing that precise moment. It didn’t pass me by. I had so much fun. You never know when something like that could happen again. I kept partying for like another twenty hours after that! Apart from your UK and US tour this year, what else is on the horizon? A lot of hard work. Shows, shows, promos, shows and more shows!
Magic Hour is out now! Available to buy or download from iTunes.

DV8 particularly recommend Exposed’s Bronzing Mousse. The mousse is easy to apply, dries instantly and has no smell whatsoever. So often tanning can leave a ‘biscuit like’ smell on the skin... but not with Exposed! Are you tired of patchy looking tan? So often this is because you haven’t exfoliated properly. The Tan Eraser does all the work for you. It is the perfect pre-tan treatment. Tess Daly has said that Exposed is: “The best tan I have ever worn!”

MEDITATION WITH THE BMTH YOGA ROOM

JAMES UDALL Just why is Kettlebell training becoming so popular? This is a question that more and more people are beginning to ask. The answer is, because it provides exclusive benefits which can be reaped quickly and easily by both men and women. Kettlebell training combines both strength and cardio training in a single workout. This builds muscle endurance and forces the body to work at its maximum heart rate. This training involves more than just one muscle and hence forms hard, toned and lean muscle mass. It helps build core strength as it forces you to engage your core muscles and consequently develops a strong central core. Girls get a sexy figure and men get the body they dream of!
Yoga Room has both personal and corporate Meditation programmes teaching and applying various styles. Look after your mind and it will look after you. How do we achieve peace of mind? Modern living can be stressful and confusing for many people. Meditation could also be called Mindfulness or Mind Management. Meditation is the journey towards self-fulfillment, self-improvement and serenity.
Discover a sense of calmness and self knowledge through meditation. Meditation or conscious awareness reduces anxiety and brings focus to the present moment and cultivates emotional stability. How does meditation work? It can be achieved in a number of ways: by paying attention to breath, or focusing on an object, movement or mantra. www.yogaroom.co.uk T: 01202 296060

LYDIA MIRCO INTERIOR DESIGNER Age: 25.
The 25 year old pioneering Bournemouth interior designer expands her horizons with a new lingerie and swimwear range. DV8 enjoyed catching up with Lydia... Best known for being one half of the design company Mirco & Mirco, Lydia has recently embarked on a new adventure designing customised, made to order bikinis, bra tops and accessories in her “spare time”. Lydia has had one foot in the design pool since a young age, shadowing her mother for many years and “following her every move.” The two are now design partners for their company Mirco & Mirco - a luxurious, bespoke and unique design company that works throughout the UK and Europe on residential and commercial projects: www.mircoandmirco.co.uk. Lydia has always looked to her mother for inspiration, appreciating colour, texture and different styles of design from a young age. “A lot of University graduates struggle to break into the industry if they don’t have someone ‘in the know.’ Luckily for me, this was always the case. My mother was very much in the know.” Lydia launched the highly successful ‘Mini Mirco’ last summer, which specialises in children’s interior design and uses JUST THE FACTS non-toxic paint and focuses on Towel or Deck safety. Lydia is also currently Chair? designing a Mini Furniture range for Neither – I’ll have a children that she is hoping to launch comfy sun lounger at the end of the year: www.minimirco.co.uk. please!
Where will we find you sunbathing in Bournemouth? The Cumberland Hotel’s Lido Deck on the chill beds. Lush. Favourite after work watering hole? The Cliff, Koh Thai, Alika.
Lydia’s new bikini range ‘Moi-Moi’ is now available to order and is “full of energy and sparkle.” Every design is individual and customized. You can pick a theme, colour and style, and she will create something for you based upon your needs. Her inspiration came from “the one and only Victoria’s Secret Angel catwalk shows.”
Is there anything this girl can’t do? What advice would she give to other budding fashion entrepreneurs? “Be a risk taker and be unique.” You can check out Lydia’s swimwear and lingerie range on her Facebook page, ‘MoiMoi.’ Photo: www.sambaxterphotography.co.uk 28 | DV8 BOURNEMOUTH.COM

have just launched a new menu, 'Fish Your Way'. First, choose between a fillet of farmed Scottish salmon, wild Scottish hake, gilt-head bream, or the seasonal special. Once you've picked between those delicious options, you then decide how you'd like it - grilled, steamed, or pan-fried, an accompanying sauce or salsa, and a choice of two sides. With such variety it really is 'Fish Your Way'’, and we love it!

DV8 OBSESSION BLUE MANGO Have you ever been caught up in the ‘I want Thai but I want Indian’ conundrum? Well now your problems are solved! Blue Mango is the newest addition to Exeter Road and serves an array of top quality Indian and Thai cuisine. Thai chef Mr. Wathana cooked up a delicious Prawn Tamarind and also a mixed seafood Hor Mok Talay which was a medium spicy dish. His counterpart Indian chef Mr. Shamsul cooked a Mixed Sashlik. Lovely. 37 Exeter Road, Bournemouth, BH2 5AF 01202 914047 / 01202 280206
DV8 fancied some quiet time away from town. We sampled for starters The Conqueror Cocktail and the New Forest Pâté served with toast. For main we were recommended to try the Hampshire Sirloin served with rocket salad and fries. This was a truly amazing cut of beef and so tender that it melted in your mouth. We also opted for fresh Mullet, the special Fresh Fish of the Day dish, which was accompanied with vegetables. We left just enough room for The Conqueror’s legendary handmade profiteroles. These were filled with Baileys Cream and covered in chocolate sauce. A delicious end to an amazing dinner. 01425 672404 www.eastclose.com Thai Chef Mr Wathana and Indian Chef Mr Shamsul 30 | DV8 BOURNEMOUTH.COM

The wedges and white blazer are both from Topshop. How would you describe ‘Bournemouth style’? Always dressy; everyone wants to look their best when they head into town. Big heels, big hair and bright dresses. What is your favourite item in your wardrobe - something you’ll never part with? I would have to say my white blazer! I bought it last year and it’s perfect for both summer and winter. In my eyes, it will always be in fashion. What is your greatest indulgence in your fashion life? Shoes! I spend so much money on them... and all they do is cause me pain! I stay in shape by? Well I try to go to the gym three times a week... doesn’t always happen though! Favourite feature? I do have nice feet... Go-to beauty brand? I buy all my make-up from MAC. Beauty secret? At least once a month I wash my hair with Olive Oil. It makes it smooth and shiny. Best beauty advice ever given to me? My mum once said: “Less is more.”
