Member Recognition: Jerricho Perez This month, a member of Deer Valley KEY Club who is worthy of recognition is Jerricho Perez. In the past month, Jerricho has successfully proven how dedicated he is to the club and his love for it as well; whether it was through attending service events or by showing kindness to his fellow members, officers, and others in general. Of the events that were available in the past month, he as attended three events, including the Brentwood Picnic & Club Rush Prep., Scrunchies Making with Water Balloons Part 2, Relay for Life: Martinez, Wolverine Walkthrough, and Taste of Concord. As a result, he obtained 14.5 hours; the most out of all of the other general members this month. Furthermore, at these events, he demonstrated a good character, as he kept a positive attitude and was amazingly kind towards his fellow members. Jerricho greatly demonstrated what it means to be a Red Devil.
Officer Recognition: Jamie Gonzales
This month, an officer of Deer Valley who is worthy of recognition is President Jamie Gonzales. In the past month, Jamie has been hard at work keeping her officers on track, as well as planning and providing service events our club to obtain the most hours as possible. Not only that, but she was also very active, being present at almost every event so far that DV was involved in. At these events, Jamie also contributed a lot, whether it was by making the event more fun or by putting in a lot of work at these events. For example, at the Scrunchies Making with Water Balloon Part 2 event, which she co-planned, provided the water balloons and materials needed to make the scrunchies; without the event wouldn't have been such a success. Then at the Relay for Life event in Martinez, she helped man the Luminaria booth for the majority of the event, and even for a while, was the only one there who was running the booth and making the Luminarias. She ended making a lot of Luminarias and beautifully done as well. This was an event the properly demonstrated the work ethic of DV's President. Also, thanks to Jamie, Deer Valley KEY Club managed to get a table for the Wolverine Walkthrough (Deer Valley High School Registration), where we were able to recruit a considerable amount of new members, even before Club Rush. Furthermore, she also led the runners at the Taste of Concord, demonstrating her leadership skills. Demonstrations of her positive presence were also present at these events, as she shows a character of kindness and of an energetic and positive attitude, which positively influenced the mood of both the members and the event. Her Bluetooth speaker also proved to be a great addition that helped raise the festivity and spirit of the events that she attends. Finally, in the past month, she gained the most hours in our club, obtaining a total of 34 hours, putting her at a total of 70 hours throughout the term so far. In the end, Jamie's run as President so far is nothing short of extraordinary.
Brentwood Picnic & Club Rush Prep.
On Friday, July 19th, 2019, from 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Blue Goose Park in Brentwood, the Red Devils came together for an event for a picnic, as well as to prepare for Club Rush. Everyone, there was having a good time as they shared food, made posters, made jokes, played volleyball, played and listened to music, as well as played on the playground. Even though we had a lot of fun, was also made a lot of progress with the posters, as well were able to make a considerable amount of them by the end of the event. Furthermore, we had members carrying each other on their shoulders and everyone taking a group picture by a giant rock. This was also where the creation of the iconic "Yau" dance took place. Then, by the end of the event, thanks again to Deer Valley President, Jamie Gonzales and her speaker, members had an amazing time, listen to some old schools, as well as to some Asian jams, as members vibed along to the music, singing and dancing under the beautiful stars.
July DCM: Region 9 Po-Key Wins League On Saturday, July 20th, 2019, at Alameda Crab Cove, Deer Valley KEY Clubbers, along with the other Red Devils of D26N, joined all of the other clubs of Region 9 for the annual Region 9 bonding, and this year's theme was Pokemon. To start the event, the amazing Spirit Coordinators from each division lead the clubbers with some extremely fun icebreakers that left members both, laughing and out of breath. Afterward, everyone was dismissed to lunch, where they ate some delicious hot dogs and burgers. When lunch was over, began the games for the event, that consisted of several teams and games. Then after the games were over began our last event of the day, which was our DCM, which resulted in our Secretary, Alex Nguyen, getting the certificate for Officer of the Month. In conclusion, this was an amazingly fun event that allowed members to meet new people and to get to know one another, as well as a way to allow fellow members to spend some exciting time together. This was an event to remember, as it was marked the birth of D26N's new remix, "The Yau".
Scrunchies Making with Water Balloon Part 2
On the Friday of July 26, at Hansen Park, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Deer Valley KEY Club, along with Dozier Libbey had their second joint Scrunchies Making event. At the event, clubbers sat together at a picnic table and started making scrunchies as they listen to music thanks to DV President, Jamie Gonzales for providing her Bluetooth speaker, which lit the spirit of the event to an even greater height. Furthermore, Deer Valley member, Cedric Cruz was also providing the members with a fantastic show as he showed off his amazing dance moves. Then after, three successful hours of making scrunchies, began lunch, as Dozier President, Dalena Ong, provided the food and set up a table in a buffet-style and bread, where members could make and enjoy their delicious sandwiches. Then, after an amazing lunch is where the real fun began, as it marks the start of our crazy fun water balloon fight; provide by Jamie, and which resulted in everyone going home soaking wet. At the end of the day, this was by far one of the best event we've ever had that wasn't a DWS, as members danced, listen to music, sang, made and ate lunch together, had an out of this world water fight, while at the same time, making scrunchies to raise $17.50 towards PTP. This was an event to remember, especially due to the happy faces seen on all of the members.
Relay for Life: Martinez
On the Saturday of July 27, 2019, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM, KEY Clubbers (3 officers & 2 members) showed to Martinez Junior High School to help out the American Cancer Association with their Relay for Life event. There, clubbers ran the Luminaria booth, where people could donate, preferably $10, to purchase a Luminaria to honor their loved ones who are either fighting or lost their fight to cancer. They also had the option to either decorate the Luminarias themselves or have us do it for them. Clubbers also cheered the teams of the relay at the beginning of the event and had the responsibility to complete any tasks that were assigned to them. Though it was at times exhausting to be at that event all day, under the blazing heat, luckily, there were sunscreen and water to help them stay cool, as well as activities to keep the event more enjoyable; especially during the long downtime. There were free items, like fans and bandannas, free food, UNO, and a Bluetooth speaker that kept the members happy at the event as well. Furthermore, thanks to Deer Valley Secretary, Alex Nguyen, and his culinary skills, be prepared and shared 3 containers of beef and rice for his fellow members to enjoy. However, the true title of MVP goes to Deer Valley President, Jamie Gonzales, for remaining at the booth for the majority of the time all day, and for a while, on her own, running the booth and beautifully decorating a lot of Luminarias. Her work ethic is something to play some respectable attention to and appreciate. Then later into the event, members were to help place the Luminarias around the track of the school and place glow-sticks in them, in preparation for the Luminaria ceremony. Then, when the time for the ceremony to start has finally come, members began handing glow-sticks out to everyone at the ceremony and joined them in the ceremony by walking the track. With it being dark out and seeing everyone walking the track with their glow-sticks, it was a sight to see and a time to remember. At the end of the day, though it was exhausting, all of the members had fun, sharing laughs, telling stories, and just spending quality time together, while at the same time, being able to raise $260 for the fight against cancer with our booth. This was an accomplishment to be proud of.
Concord Picnic & Club Rush Prep. On Friday, July 26th, from 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM, Red Devils from throughout the division, came together at Dave Brubeck Park for a relaxing picnic, as well as for the preparation for club rush. There, members laid down on picnic blankets and listened to the music playing from the speaker, while others were either, preparing for Club Rush or playing volleyball. Some also bought drinks for each other, which was very nice. The scenery of the area was also very beautiful, as the field was open while having a few giant trees surrounding our area; providing a nice shade under the hot sun. This was very much a chill event that allowed members to relax and spend some downtime together as the sun sets and the school year draws near.
Wolverine Walkthrough From July 30th to August 1st, Deer Valley High School had their Wolverine Walkthrough, where students can come and register for the up and coming school year. Amazingly, Deer Valley President, Jamie Gonzales, managed to get KEY Club a table, where our officers would promote the club and recruit new members during registration. Though it was slow during day one, where it was registration for Seniors, Things picked up during day two, where we got even more members from the Sophomore and Junior classes. Then, when day three came around and things slowed down again with the Freshmen class. Though it was nice and rewarding to obtain some new members, what aspect highlighted the event, was the officers being able to spend time together. Due to the officers getting along with each other very well, being able to spend time with each other, making jokes, telling stories, listening to music, dancing, singing, laughing, and just having interesting conversations, just made the three days we were together, that much better.
