18th Women's Rights to Vote Rally and Walk

On Saturday, January 18th, 2020, a number of Red Devils joined Deer Valley KEY Club on our home of Deer Valley High School for the 18th Women's Right to Vote Run and Walk. The main objective of this event was to promote and spread awareness for women's rights, and especially the right to vote. The first task we were given was to put up balloons to help signal others where the walk will take place. After that, we retrieved the Antioch Kiwanis banner what we'll be carrying to represent our club in the walk. For awhile, we mingled and waited for the event to go underway When it did, it started off with a few keynotes by some of the participants of the walk, as they promoted each of their causes, encouraging others to exercise their right to vote and the importance of it, and some even gave a heartfelt story of their experience with discrimination and their goal for a more equal world. So after the keynotes, we began our walk, chanting "Voting is empowerment, women get out and vote!!" When it was all over, this event was more inspirational and empowering that we thought it would. We got to more learn more about our community, the importance of voting and the impact that it has on others, and were able to hear heartfelt stories of others and their drive to participate in this event.

Officer Recognition: Victor Nguyen

For the month of February, the officer that Deer Valley KEY Club will be recognize is Editor, Victor Nguyen. Over the past month, Victor have consistently demonstrated his dedication to not only Deer Valley KEY Club, but Division 26 North as well. He had attended almost every event that Deer Valley had to offer for the last month, from the 18th Women's Right to Vote Rally and Deer Valley 2nd Semester Club Rush, collecting 8.5 service hours, the most hours collected by one member in the last month. Also with DVKC President, Jamie Gonzales being the held up and really busy recently, Victor was one of those who stepped and was there to assist her whenever she needed help. From making the PowerPoints for club meetings, taking over the club Remind and Instagram to constantly update or communicate with members if they ever needed help or had questions, constantly keeping in touch and communicating with Jamie and the officer group chat, to assisting his club run certain events. He even at times try to bring up or remind the other officers of matters that they as a whole should consider or stay on track of to help the club continue to thrive. Through his actions and eagerness to help, Victor have demonstrated his dedication to Division 26 North and what it means to be a Red Devil.

Member Recognition: James Cahayag

The member that we'll recognize for the month of February is James Cahayag. Since joining KEY Club back in the summer of 2018, James have consistantly attended numerous events and remain an active member. Furthermore, because of his kind and outgoing character, James have created a presense for himself, becoming a well-known member of Deer Valley KEY Club throughout Divsion 26 North. However, what made James stands out this last month is his initiative to step up when he is needed. For this year Conclave, for example he stepped up to be a delegate, representing DVKC in one of the most important decision making of our division; picking the next Lieutenant Governor of Division 26 North. Furthermore, James have also stepped up to be Deer Valley KEY Club's representative for Mr. KEY Club, where we all hope that he'll bring home the win for us. In conclusion, due to James commitment to KEY Club, his kind and outgoing personality, and his recent acts of initiative, out Member Recognition for the month of February goes to James Cahayag.

Conclave 2020

Sunday, January 19th was the day of Division 26 North's Conclave. The day where candidates for the position of Lieutenant Governor will give their speech and the new LTG will be elected. Deer Valley KEY Club's two delegates were Secretary Alex Nguyen and general member, James Cahayag. The first and only candidate that ran was Spirit Coordinator Edeline Ong. Even though she was the only one running, there was still a chance that delegates could vote "no confidence", so this wasn't just a breeze for Edeline as she ran and made her speech, explaining her love for KEY Club and what makes her qualified to lead Division 26 North for the term of 2019-2020. Because Division 26 South had their Conclave the same day as us, we were scheduled to have ours first, so after Edeline made her speech, everyone from Division 26 North had to go outside where we played icebreakers and then had our January DCM. During the DCM when awards were given out for monthly recognition, Deer Valley has finally brought home Club of the Month. We took pictures and mingled after the DCM until when Division 26 South finished their Conclave and everyone went to get pizza for lunch, which was provided for. This continued until it was time to announce our LTG for the 2020-2021 term, so when everyone was seated and quiet, Division 26 North's new LTG was announced and that being Edeline Ong. She got on stage and cheered and the Red Devils cheered back. Current LTG, Ivan then gave Edeline gifts to celebrate her accomplishment to become LTG. After the session was over, everyone mingled took pictures and congratulated the new LTG's on their elections until it was over. This event was another that would go down in the books as one of the most remembered moments of the 2019-2020 term, as not only did we get to see people that we haven't seen in a long time, but also get to witness the election of Edeline Ong as LTG. Someone who throughout her KEY Club journey, not only have demonstrated her love and commitment to her division, but also showed a kind of kindness, dedication, and Red Devil spirit worth placing at the top of our division, and Deer Valley KEY Club has full confidence in her ability to go far and make this division thrive, as well having her back for when times get tough.

1st Annual March for The Kiwanis Family House On Saturday, February 1st, 2020, marked the first-ever Annual March for The Kiwanis Family House. Taken place at Heather Farms Park in Walnut Creek, starting a 8:00 AM, two officers from Deer Valley KEY Club, Secretary, Alex Nguyen, and Editor, Victor Nguyen arrived to take part and volunteer at the march, where the main purpose of the event was too help fundraise and spread awareness for what the Kiwanis Family does for the community. Which mainly is providing temporary house for low-income families who are visiting a family member that is being treated at one of the two UC Davis Medical Centers. This event was large one, involving all of the branches of Kiwanis, from KEY Club (Region 9 & 17) and Circle K to the Kiwanis. Starting off the event were multiple icebreakers hosted by Monica Willemsz from Circle K to help energize everyone there that cold, early morning. Following the icebreakers were some keynotes presented by Monica and others of the Kiwanis informing us about the importance of this event and the Kiwanis Family House. After the uplifting keynotes, members were dismissed as some were making mazes out of card that would be donated to the Kiwanis Family House for the children, some participated in the march that circled the designated area, others were marking off participants' name tags for every lap that they made as the person with the most laps wins a prize, and the rest were working at several of the other stations or booths. This process went on for a while until it was time for Monica to host another icebreaker where teams are to act out scenes and the winners were to be able to get lunch first. With that being over, everyone went off to have lunch, mingled, or did more service until 2:30 PM for the closing keynoted by Monica, thanking everyone who came to help the march and the Kiwanis Family House. After the keynotes, everyone helped close down the event and cleaned up. At the end of the day, this was a great start for the month of February, as this event brought together branches of Kiwanis and allowed to work and have a good time together, which is something that we KEY Clubbers rarely get to do. We played new icebreakers, sang songs, ran together, and just had a good time in general. A great plus was seeing and hearing Monica Willemsz's amazing keynotes again, which brought back some fond memories of Region Training Conference. Most importantly however, we were able to come out early in the morning to play a part in supporting an organization that gives back so much the community, which is what being a KEY Clubber of Division 26 North is all about.

Deer Valley 2nd Semester Club Rush On February 12th through 13th, 2020, during both lunches Deer Valley High School had our second Club Rush for the second semester. Meaning that we were given a second chance to recruit new members, which could positively help our club to continue to thrive. So for two days, during both lunches, our officers gave up class and lunchtime to work at the table to help recruit new members, and we did. Though we gave up our own time for Club Rush, none of us regretted it because we were still having fun with each other, listening to music, and at the same time doing what was best for our club.

Wolverine Wednesday: Lumpia Fundraiser For the last couple of times we participated in Wolverine Wednesday at our school, a day where the classes and clubs of Deer Valley High School get to fundraise for each of their causes, we have been giving out bobas from Quickly for donations, but this time is different. On Wednesday, February 13th, 2020, during Wolverine Wednesday, Deer Valley KEY Club officers were giving out 50 lumpia, made by President Jamie Gonzales's mom, for a donation of $1 for 1, $4 for 5, and $8 for 10, which would all go towards PTP. Jamie provided the lumpia, Editor Victor Nguyen provided the sauce, and everyone chipped in cups and napkins, all of which helped make this fundraiser possible. At the end of the day, this was a huge success, as we sold out in 10 minutes. And who knows, we might even do it again.

Article & Visuals 1st Annual March for The Kiwanis Family House Victor Nguyen On Saturday, February 1st, 2020, at Heather Farms Park in Walnut Creek, two officers from Deer Valley KEY Club, along with the other Red Devils of Division 26 North joined the other branches of Kiwanis for the first-ever March for The Kiwanis Family House (KFH). This means that not only KEY Club, specifically Region 9 and 17 were present at the event, but also Circle K, Aktion Club, the Kiwanis, and all of the other Kiwanis branches as well. The main purpose of the march was for all of the branches to come together and spread awareness for what the Kiwanis Family House does and the benefits that it provides for the community; providing temporary housing for families who are visiting a seriously ill or injured patient at one of the two UC Davis Medical Centers. The event was to last from 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM, so volunteers were to show up and help set up the event, work several of the booths, and help clean up and close down the event when it was over. Upon arriving at Heather Farm Park, our members were greeted by a sign-in table and some free breakfast that the lovely Kiwanis had provided for us. When enough time has passed for everyone to arrive, Circle K member, Monica Willemsz took the mic and hosted several fun icebreakers to help lift everyone’s’ spirit during the cold morning. Afterward, everyone took a seat in the chairs lined up and listened to the keynotes and speeches that Monica and others had prepared regarding the march and the Kiwanis Family House. Following the keynotes was the march, where participants were to walk or run around the designated area to spread awareness for the KFH. Volunteers were either participating in the march, making mazes out of cards for little kids, or ran booths, while others were marking participants’ name tag with markers for every lap that they had completed for a chance to win a prize. That continued until we had our final icebreaker, where teams were to reenact a scene and the winners get to get lunch first. With the conclusion of the icebreakers, everyone received lunch provided by the Kiwanis and mingled with each other until the final keynote, where Monica thanks everyone for coming and supporting the Kiwanis Family House. With the end of the keynote, that concludes the 1st Annual March for Kiwanis Family House with everyone helping to clean up the park and putting away tables and chairs. For the most part, the march was relatively small and chill for an event that was quite highly anticipated and included all of the branches of Kiwanis. Nevertheless, it was still a great turnout and the activities that we did there were really fun. We got to play really fun icebreakers that we haven’t played before, meet new people, run, sing, and spend time with each other, and of course, see and hear Monica Willemsz give her wonderful keynotes again, which also brings back some nostalgic memories of Region Training Conference. But the main reason for why we were there was the most important part, for we were able to learn more about the Kiwanis Family House through the keynotes, and help spread awareness and raise money for the KFH, which that was awarding all in of itself. At the end of the day, though it was small, the march was as amazing and fun as any other event, as we were able to bond, learn, work, and socialize together; some factors that when are together, are what makes an event truly worthwhile.
