talking points THE ROADWORD REVIEW - TRAFFIC DELAYS AND ROAD CLOSURES ALERT By Pat Minkiewicz

Many Eagle residential roads took a beating from the recent icy winter snow that refused to melt. Even Eagle Mayor Ridgeway ended up hopping onto a tractor to assist in moving snow aside on State Street downtown and the City Hall parking area. This was to prevent additional nighttime ice from forming on commercial streets, particularly the downtown area that includes the Post Office, City Hall and the Library. To the rescue now comes the Ada County Zone 6 Road Chip Sealing Season that will continue in Eagle through August and possibly early September. Zone 6 also includes the north Meridian area where roadwork has begun already. County signs will be posted in the areas due for treatment. Watch for probable traffic delays or closures in residential areas. Some streets within subdivisions will be either chip sealed or paved on an as-needed basis. A stretch of Ballantyne Lane in west Eagle has been completed and looks great. Most likely, the work on Park Lane between Hwy. 44 and Floating Feather Road will be completed earlier rather than later, as the high school and its parking lots are along that stretch. Equestrians, be prepared. Zone 6 includes all of Eagle City’s northern rural Area of Impact, including Homer Road and the Willow Creek Road area. The east-west length of Beacon Light Road will be chip

sealed, as well as most of the currently paved residential roads in the AOI. Work in that area begins around July 17th, and will continue into August until completion. If you have other drivers in your family, please alert them about the summertime roadwork. Roadwork scheduling for Zone 6 was done by the County’s Cloverdale Road Maintenance Office: 208.387.6350. Please call that number for any inquiries. For a map of Zone 6, go to: http://bit.ly/2rVszp6 Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) news in Eagle area: • July-September –Crews will repave the 11-mile stretch of Idaho 44 between east Star and I-84 junction. Ada County Highway District (ACHD) news in Eagle area: • Replacing existing bridge on Eagle Road, located 1/4 mile north of Floating Feather over Dry Creek. • The new bridge will have two travel lanes, a center turn lane, bike lanes and a sidewalk.

A DAY IN EAGLE SUMMER FUN WITH KIDS STORY BY TIA CRABTREE PHOTOS BY JEAN WOLFORD

PLAY & EXPLORE IN EAGLE It’s been an unpredictable year for weather. Each morning we ask Alexa “what’s the weather” or we Google our WeatherBug app for details because it’s always changing. Is it in or outside today with the kiddos? Where do we cool off, and what’s for lunch? Then your local conscience mind says, “keep it local when you can” if you’re going out. Planning and executing activities on a daily or every-other-day basis is smart, especially in this overwhelming tech era where kids are glued to electronics. As parents we are educators, fitness directors, nutritionist, safety experts, and more. Here’s to getting out and keeping dollars local.

SMOKY MOUNTAIN PIZZERIA If you want to escape the nuggets, cottage cheese and grape plate from home, there’s pizza time on the patio. You’ll enjoy lunch, creative pizza making skills from your kids, and people-watching all wrapped into one, and the wait staff cleans up giving you a break. After your visit, consider going for a walk in downtown Eagle.

SV COOKIE COMPANY Enjoy an assortment of cookies by taking home a box for the family, or simply a cookie for each kid. They stick with the basics and it works. Chocolate chip, snickerdoodles, white chocolate macadamia nut, and other traditional recipe cookies. MERRILL PARK

A great park! Leave in the morning, have lunch and leave by 1pm before temperatures soar. Located next to the Boise River Greenbelt sits a beautiful 9-acre park with an open playing field, picnic areas, wetland/riparian areas, an observation shelter (gazebo), pond area, foot paths, children’s play area (including an interactive water feature), volleyball and basketball courts.

CRUNCH FITNESS

Too hot, go indoors and swim at Crunch Fitness. It does require a membership or daily fee, and the kids will have a blast staying warm at room temperature and eliminating the need for sunscreen. You can escape for a workout if your kids are a certain age, or place young kids in their day care, then workout and swim all together.

Legacy – Linder and Floating Feather Road This development began in 2006 with the initial building phase of this ‘first-to-last’ community. The term ‘first-tolast’ embodies Legacy’s philosophy-- homes and options for all buyers, from the first home purchased to the last home designed to address the needs of retirement years. Legacy grows and adapts with the homeowners as they transition through the various phases of their lives. Each building phase has a different theme, making Legacy Living one of the most diverse communities in Eagle. For example, Phase 8 is The Rockies, filled with pine trees and a relaxing mountain vibe, while Phase 5 is strictly patio homes for a lower-maintenance lifestyle. There are approximately 20 to 30 spacious lots in each phase, while still accommodating the rapidly growing population. Legacy’s start-to-finish approach makes them unique, positioning them to respond to each life cycle of the homeowner With 590 acres of space, The Legacy Living community really gives Eagle room to spread its wings.

Risk Taker & Rule Breaker A Conversation with Matt Rissell, CEO of Tsheets

W

hen Eagle resident Matt Rissell ran into issues keeping track of his employees at Cartridge World, he looked for a solution. Not finding one, he created his own with former roommate and computer programmer Brandon Zehm. They founded TSheets in 2006 and dedicated full-time attention to it at the end of 2007. Over 10 years, their offerings and services have grown. Today TSheets employs more than 200 people in their new Eagle Road headquarters. Rissell’s bachelor of science degree in management and finance and a minor in psychology from Colorado Mesa University came in handy in previous businesses including Cartridge World stores, a printer cartridge recycling business, and a few other small tech companies. Born in Sterling, Colorado, Rissell, now 40, lived in Grand Junction and Greeley before moving to Idaho in 1999. Rissell’s home is now Eagle where he lives with his wife, Robin Rissell, a copywriter and full-time mom to their 3 children: Nicole (11), Hunter (10) and Caiden (7) and their pets, a Weimaraner named Brushy and a cat named August. “I love camping, hunting and fishing, mountain biking, dirt biking, skiing--essentially anything outdoors with my family,” Rissell says. “I am also a pilot! Want to fly on Rissell-Air sometime?” TSheets CEO Matt Rissell shared his thoughts with Eagle Magazine. What do you like most about Eagle? The new building with the big red “T” on it ;) Why did you choose Eagle as the home for your company’s headquarters? It’s the best place to live on the planet. In fact, we have two bests: best place to work in Idaho and best place to live on the planet.

tech BY PAMELA KLEIBRINK THOMPSON PHOTOS BY TSHEETS

What is key to your success? It’s never just one key thing and it’s not just one thing that causes a company to fail, just as one donut won’t make you fat. It’s a sum of all the little things--the right principles that lead to the right decisions made every single day. What do you like most about what you do? That we get to affect small business owners literally all over the world in 112 different countries from right here in Eagle, Idaho. How did TSheets get started? I needed a way to track time for my employees when building the Cartridge World stores here locally. With multiple locations and employees constantly on the go, keeping track of my employee hours became a pain. So I went to the Web and searched for an online solution but couldn’t find one that could do what I wanted it to. So I recruited my buddy, who happened to be a brilliant programmer, Brandon Zehm, to create a custom solution. We started using TSheets at Cartridge World and our first month saved a couple thousand dollars on payroll. My bookkeeper came to me and said “This is amazing… can you sell it?” And that’s where it all began. What makes your company culture different? I built a culture that I personally would want to be a part of. What makes it the #1 best place to work in Idaho? A group of people that truly want to build a company that makes a difference.

26 | www.eaglemagazine.com

How many employees does TSheets have now? We are currently at 200 and expect to end 2017 around 250. We anticipate ending

2018 with somewhere between 350 and 400 employees. So far we haven’t had difficulty hiring for any positions. Our culture and our team–they attract top-notch individuals. What is the most popular tool in the TSheets repertoire? The Who’s Working Window. Business owners can see who is working, what they are working on, how long they have been working on it and where their team is, from anywhere in the world. What makes TSheets so appealing? It’s insanely easy to use (if you can turn on your cell phone, you can track time with TSheets). And because we have hands down the BEST Customer Experience department on the planet. What industry uses TSheets the most? Any small business that has hourly employees and needs to track employee time for payroll. A lot of construction companies, service-based and professional service-based companies come to us to solve their payroll challenge. What is your biggest business challenge? Our product is not like tomatoes in that we don’t have to grow our product. We don’t have a product that goes bad–like tomatoes go bad–and we don’t have a problem distributing our “tomatoes.” We have unlimited product, with unlimited distribution to anywhere in the world. We’re in a really big market–there are more than 2 million businesses in the U.S. alone that use spreadsheets or paper time cards to track their employee time. Our biggest challenge is how to grow faster. We are doubling now, and it’s my belief we should be tripling. What tips/advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs? If you listen to other people you will never start a company. And if you do, you will quit. Don’t listen to other people. Make your own decisions.

What is your biggest challenge as a CEO? Making sure my CEO capabilities continue to grow with the company. The CEO required when we were 40-50 employees is completely different now that we’re at 200. Book(s) you are reading? Right now I’m reading Fierce Conversations and Tools of the Titans, and both are extraordinary. Favorite book? Some of the ones that have made the biggest impact on me, are How to Win Friends and Influence People, The Magic of Thinking Big, The Greatest Salesman in the World, The E-Myth, Acres of Diamonds, and The Lean Startup. Once in a lifetime experience? Going to Alaska last summer–three generations--with my son and my dad. Who gave you great advice? What was it? I have had so many mentors and people who invested in my life. One of the most important things said to me, in regards to business was when I came home and wanted to give up after TSheets had experienced a couple go-to-market failures. My wife put a collage together that said “We believe in you Daddy” and said she would follow me to the ends of the world whether we lived in a cardboard box or a mansion--that as long as we were together, that was all that mattered.

DEFINING YOUR STYLE Design Tips from Decorating Den Interiors’ Marva Don

“I

remove the risk of decorating on your own,” said Marva Don Card, a certified interior decorator and owner of Decorating Den Interiors in Boise. “I come to you with product samples and decorating ideas. I assist you in determining the products and designs that are right for you, in the colors and lighting of your surroundings. Because each client is unique in taste and lifestyle, I custom tailor a home’s interior to match individual needs and desires. And I make it fun!” Marva Don smiled.

won’t hurt my feelings if we need to tweak the design; and lastly, they ensure I have stayed within their established budget so they are ready to proceed with the design project.” Marva Don’s Color and Lighting Primer “When selecting the color scheme for your room, a good rule of thumb is to begin with the rug and fabrics,” Marva Don advised. “Since there are infinite shades of paint, but only a few ideal fabrics, don’t make the popular mistake of selecting the wall paint first. You will save yourself a lot of leg work by selecting the wall paint after all the fabrics have been determined.”

Fufilling a Destiny “My best friend from high school told me about the Decorating Den Interiors franchise,” recalled Marva Don in explaining her start. “I called, asked many questions, and passed the interview, design and business tests to qualify for ownership of a franchise. I decided I should follow my passion and go back to what I had wanted to do since I was 18!” she enthused. Marva Don opened Decorating Den Interiors five years ago to help clients transform their homes into what they envisioned but couldn’t seem to accomplish without a little outside help. Originally from Caldwell, Marva Don managed a professional medical practice for 28 years and brought many of those people skills and empathy from her patient-facing role to her interior design business. Just Three Rules “Each design I do is a client’s dream project, so I give my very best to each one,” stated Marva Don. “They are as individual as my clients. When I have my first complimentary consultation with clients, I tell them they only have to do three things: first, they need to like me, as we need to communicate and feel comfortable with each other to achieve their dream design; second, they have to love the design, because they are the ones living with it and it

“Color sets the feel and mood of your home environment,” she shared, “and that is not to say it has to be bold and bright, but color is tricky. Getting it right can be a challenge. Adding other elements like textures and patterns make for a great design.” “Determine the right-sized light fixture for your room,” she added. “Size matters.” Oversized pendants are appropriate for large kitchen islands and open dining areas. To select fixture shapes, start with the existing furniture, textures and colors in the room. Consider the dominant shapes, wall covering and window treatments style. To create a cozy living space, cluster pendants at varying heights.

During a new client’s complimentary consultation—from the comfort of their own home--Marva Don provides expert guidance on colors, materials, textures, finishes and furniture to craft the perfect solution, which may include window coverings, custom bedding, floor and wall coverings, upholstery and fine furniture, or lighting and accessories. She offers outdoor furniture and color consultations as well. Decorating Den Interiors also creates closet systems and storage organization spaces. Her team will measure, design and install systems to suit every need and budget. Fixing Disjointed Design Flow Marva Don recalled one couple she helped recently, who needed an objective eye. “They were tired of wasting money on buying furniture that didn’t ‘fit’ the room and never getting the complete ‘look’ for their home. Their home had an open floor plan, so you could see several rooms from wherever you stood. The husband was very sure we really didn’t need to paint the family room--it was a peachy sand color--but once it was painted a beautiful, warm gray hue, we won him over to show how color can change the ‘feel’ of a room. We added beautiful leather recliners, a wine bar area and a conversation sectional for when they entertain. We used dramatic draperies in their dining room and accessories to pull the color scheme of oranges, soft grays and touches of yellows. We succeeded in transitioning every room in their home to deliver the warm, comfortable ‘Wow-this-is-my-home!’ look they were seeking.”

SNIP Controls Overpopulation

“M

y passion is saving animals from neglect and suffering,” shared Diane Ayres, executive director and president of the board for Spay Neuter Idaho Pets, Inc. ( d.b.a. SNIP) in Boise. She founded the nonprofit in 2008 with Pamela Williams, Lois Hailey and Lou Ann Gaskell. According to Ayres, the organization was founded to meet several objectives: Providing affordable, quality spay neuters of dogs and cats; reducing the number of animals being euthanized in shelters; reducing the number of pets subject to neglect and suffering; providing education on the importance of spaying and neutering for the health of animals; effectively and humanely containing the population growth of feral, stray and abandoned cats and encouraging rescue groups and shelters to work together to help animals. Starting SNIP “I had volunteered for several rescue groups, trying to sell my vision of a high-quality, highvolume, low-cost spay neuter clinic with no success,” recalled Ayres. “In January of 2008, I asked the executive director of the Idaho Humane Society Auxiliary if I could use their 501 (c) 3 status, and she agreed. What followed was Mady Rothchild, Dr. Jeff Rosenthal and myself starting the SPOT

clinic at Idaho Humane Society on April 1, 2008. We fixed 30 feral cats for $10 each, and 5 pit bulls or pit bull mixes for $25 each every Tuesday. It was very successful. When I wanted to expand it, we decided to form SNIP to provide low-cost, affordable spay/neuter surgeries to all, regardless of income.” SNIP’s Impact Since its inception, SNIP has financially helped spay and neuter more than 15,856 cats and dogs, preventing the birth of over 110,992 puppies and kittens (based on calculations from SpayUSA). SNIP is dedicated to improving the lives of Idaho’s cats and dogs through reducing overpopulation with lowcost spay and neuter programs, education and community partners. In addition, SNIP provides financial assistance for spay/neuter surgeries for income-qualified individuals. SNIP is the only organization in the valley that spays and neuters feral and freeroaming cats in Canyon County and Emmett for free. Ayres’ own pet family includes two dogs she rescued in Minidoka County: Hamper, a ninepound, black mixed breed found inside the hamper of an empty hotel room closet, and Scruffy, a 15-pound Cairn terrier dachshund mix “found running the streets.” Ayres has also rescued four cats: Turbo, found at 6 weeks old, dumped in the park across the street from her home; Tarzan, dumped off at the front door of her neighbor’s house in

a small box with the note “Tarzan is 2 years old and has a neurological problem, we have 3 dogs, good karma”; Cleo, who wandered into Ayres’ yard and remained there after an extensive search for his home turned up nothing; and Toes, a polydactyl cat that is FIV positive but living a good life with her other cats. Scruffy and Hamper were fixed with SNIP’s everyday, low-cost vouchers. Scruffy’s procedure cost $115, and Hamper’s operation was $80. Low-cost vouchers, regardless of income, are available at the local Petco, Bark ’n’ Purr or online at snipidaho.org. SNIP to the Rescue Ayres has seen firsthand how SNIP has impacted local residents. “We were doing an income-qualified voucher event at the Nampa Petco, and a gentleman and his wife requested a female cat voucher. Upon receiving it, he looked at his wife with tears in his eyes, and said ‘Mama our little kitty is never going to have kittens again thanks to SNIP.’ His sincere comment made my day.” Ayres shared another heartwarming story. “Several years ago around Christmas time, a single mom and her two daughters were living in their cold car with their dog. They were accepted into a shelter, but the shelter would not take the dog in unless it was fixed. SNIP was contacted and fixed their little fella. The four of them ended up spending a warm Christmas together in the shelter.”

SNIP’s next fundraising event is their Third Annual Grape Stomp on Sunday, September 24, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Crooked Fence Brewing Company. A $35 ticket or table of 8 for $250 includes a fun afternoon of endless, hearty harvest appetizers, one free glass of beer or wine, bocci ball and other lawn games, live music, a silent and live auction and a grape-stomping contest. The winner will receive the coveted, hand-carved trophy for a year. The emcee and auctioneer this year will be KTVB Channel 7’s Larry Gebert. Proceeds benefit SNIP’s spay/neuter programs. After September 12, ticket prices increase to $50 per person, or $360 for a table of 8. “Spay and neuter your pets. They will be healthier and can live longer,” Ayres recommended.

New EHS Volleyball Coach Hartman Nets GAINS Collin Hartman brings player experience to new role

I

n 2010, Hartman became Idaho’s athletic oddity, since boys’ high school volleyball is lacking and upon graduating from EHS, he landed a college scholarship to play volleyball. But Hartman spent his earlier years in Wisconsin and Colorado, playing two years on school teams. As a seventh grader, he moved with his family to Eagle, where he piece-mealed together opportunities to keep growing his game. For his sophomore and junior years, he returned to Colorado – staying with family friends – to compete on a Parker High School boys’ team. It was a good decision. They won a state title his first year and finished runner-up his second year. College men’s volleyball teams were already recruiting him when he returned to Idaho for his senior year at EHS. Time on the Saddle “There were not a lot of boys playing volleyball. I went to great lengths to play as much as possible,” Hartman recalled. “I played in every tournament I could.” In southwest Idaho, he entered grass-court tournaments involving men’s or co-ed teams, organized pick-up games and early on was the only boy on an under-14 girls’ club team. “I was playing volleyball every chance I could get,” Hartman admitted. “I would eat, sleep and breathe volleyball.” The effort paid off. By his senior season at Cardinal Stritch University, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics school in Milwaukee, the 6-foot-3-inch Hartman was named to the all-conference team as a setter. He went on to serve for two seasons as a graduate assistant coach with the women’s team at Illinois State University, where he earned his master’s degree. He worked last season as an assistant women’s volleyball coach

PHOTOS BY JIM PETERSON at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, and is coaching a U-16 Idaho Crush club headed to a national tournament in July. He has also worked at the College of Idaho in student administration. “I was excited to come back home, and when the Eagle coaching job opened, I thought it would be a perfect fit,” Hartman said. He succeeds Michelle Dodds, who went 39-17 in three seasons as EHS head coach and led the team to a state tournament appearance, the Idaho Statesman reported. Dodds created the vacancy by moving to Florida. This fall’s Mustang team returns experienced varsity players, and Hartman will aim for a bid to the state 5-A tournament in Coeur d’Alene. His sister, Kylie, who graduated from Eagle High in 2009, was part of championship-winning volleyball teams her final two years. “I am hoping to bring the program back to that level of success,” Hartman said. “As a player, I learned it’s not easy. There are going to be times when you feel overwhelmed and there is a lot coming at you,” he warned, “but the opportunities inherent in a team atmosphere – like camaraderie, overcoming challenges, and being strong in the classroom and community – make it all worthwhile.”

Grinkers Vintage Arcade: Insert Coin The Largest West of the Mississippi

PHOTOS BY JIM PETERSON

“I

grew up as a kid in the ‘80s, every Saturday morning I’d get on my bike with a pocket full of quarters and ride to the local arcade until I ran out of quarters. I lived through that golden age of video games in the early ‘80’s arcades,” shared Steve Barbey, owner of Grinkers Arcade. Grinkers is a vintage ‘80’s era all-ages game arcade located in downtown Eagle. They have 250 different games offering a variety of machines including pinball as well as traditional vintage arcade games like Donkey Kong, Pacman, Centipede, and much more. “The catalyst for it was, surfing Craigslist I saw three arcade games on for sale: Lunar Lander, Super Poppa and Battlezone. They were in south Boise. I thought ‘Wow, I could leave my house right now and in an hour have three arcade games in my house, how cool would that be?’ On a whim I went out, bought them and brought them back. Now there were three arcade games in my living room,” laughed Barbey. Three games turned into 17 and eventually torn with what to do with the games. Barbey opened a retail space that became Grinkers. “We are tucked away in the corner of the building. It’s actually kind of fun. When people walk in the door, because

36 | www.eaglemagazine.com

it’s the corner, they expect it to be smaller but walk in and realize this place is huge. We’re 7,500 sq. feet with 250 games, so it’s very significantly sized place.” In addition to games, Grinkers also offer a small menu of food items such as sandwiches, as well as beer and wine. “We wanted the arcade to be an evening rather than a pit

stop. We wanted people to be able to come and spend their entire evening here and offering quality food and drinks was the key to accomplishing that goal. A parent can bring their kid here and while the kids are going crazy, they can relax and enjoy a glass of wine.” Grinkers also hosts a variety of game and pinball tournaments each month. In June there will be two tournaments, the Street Fighter tournament, which will be held Thursday June 8th through Saturday June 10th, and the Galaga tournament, will be held Thursday June 15th through Saturday June 17th. Additionally, once a year in October they host an event called ‘Grink Fest’. Last year attendees flew in from 28 different states and Canada to attend the event. Grinkers is the largest vintage arcade west of the Mississippi river. “It’s fun for people to discover some of the history of many of our games. We have a Missile Command Cockpit--there are only 13 games known to still exist. It’s also the lowest serial number on record. The super cool part is 007, so it’s double O 7, 1 of 13 and lowest serial number and so it’s the coolest Missile Command Cockpit on the face of the earth. We have a lot of rare early ‘70’s games, which truly represent the very beginning of video games. It is an arcade but it’s also a museum--a museum where you get to touch and play with the museum pieces, and it’s just a lot of fun.”

ampa-based community choir Eagle Song will soon be soaring at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Sunday, November 19, 2017, thanks to an invitation from conductor and composer Mark Hayes, who asked them to perform the premiere of his complex “International Carol Suite,” a collection of traditional Christmas carols in more than 20 languages. The group is joining with other choristers, forming the Distinguished Concerts International New York City (DCINY) to perform on Sunday, November 19, 2017. “Eagle Song received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers, as well as the exceptional recommendation given by Mark Hayes,” stated Dr. Jonathan Griffith, DCINY’s artistic director and principal conductor. “It is quite an honor just to be invited to perform in New York. These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community. This is an event of extreme pride for everybody, and deserving of the community’s recognition and support.” West Goes East The outstanding Idaho musicians will spend five days and four nights in New York City preparing for their concert. “The singers will spend approximately nine to 10 hours in rehearsals over the five-day residency,” noted Griffith. “Not all of the time is spent in rehearsals, since there is so much history and culture to see in New York City. However, the performance is the primary purpose for their visit to the city.”

PHOTOS BY JIM PETERSON Eagle Song was founded by Stephen Kuykendall to further learning and performing choral works in the high academic tradition, and offering opportunities to present choral works--particularly sacred works--in a variety of concert settings. Eagle Song, a group of people who love singing together, began seven years ago with a Northwest Nazarene University alumni group. Most of Eagle Song’s singers still have some affiliation with the university. When Voices Blend “What makes us special is the wide array of backgrounds and experience levels,” explained Aubrielle Holly, an Eagle Song member. “The thing I love the most about singing in choir is that the art form does not exist without the mix of different voices coming together to create these beautiful sounds. The Online Search for BBB By Emily Valla, Senior Marketplace Director As you walk up to a local business, you’ll see stickers in the window declaring business hours, announcing various memberships, and on some, you’ll see the Better Business Bureau Accredited Business seal. As a nonprofit organization for more than 100 years, the logo is recognizable and iconic. But did you ever stop to wonder, what it actually mean to be accredited by the triple B? “Better Business Bureau Accreditation telegraphs a strong story about the business displaying the BBB Torch Seal. Accreditation tells people the business has taken an oath to uphold standards of responsiveness, truth and transparency,” Dale Dixon, Chief Innovation Officer explained. In the past 18 months, Idaho’s BBB has partnered with BBB’s in Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Montana to form BBB Serving the Northwest. Since then, the BBB has discovered that every four seconds, someone searches BBB Serving the Northwest to find a business they can trust. They help businesses and consumers resolve disputes fairly and without expensive litigation through their mediation processes. And BBB Accredited Businesses support their education and outreach efforts, including scam warnings, consumer tips and an annual scholarship competition. “BBB Accreditation is a confidence builder for potential and current customers,” Dixon added.

Porterhouse Market Just Pulls You In This Museum of Meat put the ‘Deli’ in Delicious

I

f you could have a sommelier for steaks Dave Faulk would be it. He is the Eagle, Idaho carnivore’s connoisseur with his Traeger grills fired up just outside of his Porterhouse Market, teasing the air—and his guests—with the unmistakable scent of savory, smoking meats. The Porterhouse was the natural next-step evolution for Faulk, the son of a large animal veterinarian. Faulk grew up living and breathing livestock before going into the food industry, first on a small beef ranch in northern Idaho and finally, a dairy farm in eastern Oregon. His high school senior year, he worked at a packinghouse in Eagle, Idaho where he learned butchering and packing sausage, handy skills he still uses today. The following two summers he fished for Halibut, salmon and Dungeness crabs on Kodiak Island in Alaska. All of those influences culminated in inspiring Faulk’s appreciation for our food sources, and ultimately founding Porterhouse Market. Twenty-three glowing Yelp reviews can’t be wrong. The grape and bleu cheese macaroni salad is a one-of-a-kind stand out. The soups are made fresh daily. Faulk’s friendly, attentive onsite staff recommends spices, rubs and blends with the attentive care of an apothecary prescribing elixirs. Their wine selection is thoughtfully curated and the staff is happy to advise customers on pairing wines with any of the foods they buy here. All of their products make thoughtful housewarming gifts for those impromptu dinner-at-a-friend’s-house invites.

harmonizing in the background as customers slowly approach the case in reverence. But don’t let the Porterhouse part of their name fool you. Their pork, fish and seafood offerings are fresh, high end and without equal. Porterhouse Market’s potpies, lasagna, deli salads and the we’ll-ignore-calories-just- for-today tantalizing dessert bar (with gelato now on the menu) are all working in concert, coaxing the customers. There is something for every palate here. Home to Eagle’s best prime meats, Porterhouse Market provides meat to highprofile restaurants like Fork, Alavita and Rudy’s. Between the bread—delivered to him fresh daily from Gaston’s— and the deli with its fresh sausages (where else will you find Kobe beef hotdogs?) the Porterhouse Market has become the second home for customers who appreciate prime meats, a cozy atmosphere and a diverse deli. Be sure to stop in and meet the friendly staff, get their advice and enjoy a quality nosh session. Discover Eagle’s ultimate foodie experience that you’ve been missing.

Faulk and his team bring imaginative new flavors to old standards, like the pickled red onion on their Porterhouse Reuben sandwich, or the basil pesto mayo on their Italian sub sandwich. The Cranberry Gobbler is a must for fans of Thanksgiving any time of time of the year. This new approach to the traditional turkey sandwich combines zesty cranberry relish with oven-roasted turkey, Swiss cheese, mayo, lettuce and alfalfa sprouts (the latter because hey, we’re still in the Pacific Northwest, after all!) For Faulk’s fellow carnivores, the display case is a museum of meat, where you can almost hear the choir of cherubs

idaho rockets flying in washington d.c. Galileo STEM Provides Launch Pad for Rocket Fans

A

midst the baseball, tennis, softball, track and other local sports happening this past Mother’s Day weekend, there was a little-known national model rocket competition occurring as well. Each year at this time, students from schools around the US and Virgin Islands converge on Washington, D.C. to compete for the title of TARC National Champion, in the hopes of advancing to Paris, France (all expenses paid) for the international competition. Eagle’s Galileo STEM school represented our community and state after qualifying for the national competition with a combined 30 points in their two best-qualifying launches. Nine students, one coach and six parents left for Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, May 9th and returned Sunday, the 14th. They visited the Smithsonian Museums, the White House, national monuments, the National Archives, and Senator Crapo’s office, which included a lucky encounter with the Senator himself. Thanks to a local FBI agent, they were invited to tour the FBI academy in Quantico and learn the history and training requirements of the Bureau. They also practiced launching the day before the competition, and visited the Bull Run battlefields of the Civil War in Manassas Virginia. On Saturday, May 13th, the rocket team (comprised of seven seventh graders and two eighth graders) arrived with their rockets, motors and experience to compete for the grand

46 | www.eaglemagazine.com

prize. The field of 101 competing teams was mostly high school teams with a handful of competitors from middle schools. The competition was scored in two categories: altitude and time. Teams were given a target altitude (this year 775 feet). Points were added for every foot above or below this mark. The time was scored as a 4-point penalty for every second above or below the time it takes for the rocket to leave the launch pad and then return to the ground. (This year the time window was 41-43 seconds.) Each team was trying to launch a raw egg to the target altitude within the time frame specified. If the egg had any sign of cracking at the end of the flight, the team was disqualified. These young minds listened to their coach’s instructions and headed into the staging area where only the teams were allowed. Here they prepared the egg, rocket, altimeter and motor. A few minutes later, they left the staging area and headed for the launch pad with 20 other teams in their section. The parents and coach waited nervously on the sidelines for Galileo’s number to come up. After what seemed like hours, the queue came from the officials and the Galileo rocket blasted off. It was a beautiful sight for the team and their parents. The students recovered their rocket, which landed about 200 yards down wind and proceeded to the judges’ table for the egg and altimeter inspection. The official score was determined: Galileo STEM from Eagle, Idaho scored a 13.38. This score put them in 12th place, qualifying them for the final fly-off two hours later.

After some food and relaxation, the team had a discussion with the coach and headed to the staging area to try winning the title. The fly-off round is always more difficult. There’s more pressure and nerves and more wind to factor in. The best 24 teams in the nation were competing for the prize money and trip to Paris. On the launch pad, team Galileo flew 12th. When the time came, everything went smoothly and the rocket was in the air without delay. As the parachute deployed, all looked favorable. The team hoped their egg would land within the 42-44 second time frame. Unfortunately, it took 48 seconds, which meant that the altitude was probably too high. At the judging table it was confirmed. The altitude was 833 feet. This meant a 33-point penalty, plus the 16 points on the time. They scored a 49-point flight. They were a little disappointed with the result, but would not find out their actual placing until 7 p.m. when the top 24 teams were announced. When the officials announced the results, Galileo learned they placed 13th overall: a personal best for the school. Team Wildcats proudly represented our state and community. As the team left the event, they reviewed nearly reaching the top 10, determined to win next year. The team also discussed ways to attract more sponsors. The Galileo STEM rocket team thanks Idaho STEM Action Center for providing them with a travel grant to make this trip possible. They also thank to their engineering teacher Mr. Stoddard, their mentor Mr. Worthin and their coach Dr. Cook.

the best foods for looking younger By Molly Tevis, RDN, LD

kin health and anti-aging skin routines are always evolving, sometimes contradictory and often quite costly. But did you know we already hold the power to defy aging, simply with what we bring home from the grocery store? The best approach is prevention. Protect yourself against skin-altering free radicals by integrating a balanced nutritional diet with high-antioxidant food choices. Antioxidants, plus vitamins A, C, D and E, essential omega3s and healthy gut bacteria promote ultimate skin health.1 Summer is the perfect time to jump start your skincare regimen, since age-defying produce is more readily available in your neighborhood supermarket. The skincare boost in your shopping basket: Berries: Rich in vitamin C and several powerful antioxidants, you can serve these atop yogurt, salads or paired with raw nuts for a healthy snack. • Stone fruits: Peaches and nectarines contain alphahydroxy acids, helping you maintain a healthy complexion. Apricots provide 674 IU of vitamin A, which is crucial for skin integrity. • Grapefruit: One-half of a grapefruit provides 100% of the daily recommended vitamin C, which strengthens your skin’s collagen for a more youthful fullness. • Avocados: These offer nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and beneficial plant compounds. • Sweet potatoes: One spud contains >400% of the daily value for vitamin A, a nutrient needed for healthy skin. • Walnuts/Flaxseed: These provide excellent fiber for gut health, rich in plant omega-3s and vitamin E. • Water: Avoid dehydration. This can impact your skin’s tone and elasticity. With the summer heat, be sure to constantly sip water throughout the day. - Incorporate these foods into your daily routine and maintain your youthful glow all year long. Stop in to your local Eagle Albertson for more tips and recipes!
