BEHIND THE SCENES
OF Sam and Duke
In the world of stop-motion animation, every frame tells a story—often, one painstakingly crafted with hands-on creativity and detail. Tom Taylor, the visionary behind The Adventures of Sam and Duke, brings this art form to life with his threepart series. The first installment, Where Has Sam’s Shadow Gone?, introduces viewers to Sam and his loyal dog, Duke, as they embark on their first adventure. The second, Sam and Duke’s Incredible Adventure in the Sky, takes the duo to new heights—literally. The third installment, Sam and Duke’s Big River Adventure, has even garnered multiple awards, solidifying the series’ place in the hearts of fans everywhere.
Tom Taylor’s Stop-Motion Magic
The motivation for Taylor to create The Adventures of Sam and Duke runs deep. “I wrote the first children’s story for my son around the time he was born in 2007, but I didn’t finish and release the first book/movie until 2021,” he explains. “His first name, my first name, and my father’s first name are all Sam. The story and images in these movies and the books are a reflection of our family.”
Incorporating his own experiences into the characters, Taylor reveals, “When I was a young boy, I had a dog named Duke, so the character development was pretty easy because I pulled from real life. Duke is very similar to what I remember my dog being like when I was a boy. For Sam’s character, I pulled bits and pieces from my life and my dad’s history to create that character.”
Stop-motion animation involves physically building props and models and capturing a series of sequential photographs to create movement. For Taylor, this method is more than just a way to tell a story; it’s a way to bring heart and soul to his characters. In Sam and Duke’s Incredible Adventure in the Sky, Taylor meticulously constructed an airplane for one of the most thrilling scenes in the series, showcasing the magic behind stop-motion.
Taylor didn’t just sketch the airplane; he built it piece by piece. From the body of the aircraft to the tiny propeller, every detail was created with care, giving the airplane a realistic yet whimsical feel. For this airborne adventure, Taylor used the core principles of stop-motion. By adjusting the airplane’s position slightly in between each frame, he captured a sequence of photos that, when played together, makes it appear as if Sam and Duke are soaring through the sky. “The Adventures of Sam and Duke have a great mixture of excitement, peril, laughter, and wonder because of their youth and bond together,” he shares.
The result is a seamless, lifelike motion that pulls viewers into Sam and Duke’s world. The airplane glides through the clouds, its propeller spinning, all thanks to Taylor’s careful craftsmanship and passion for stop-motion.
While the first part of the series, Where Has Sam’s Shadow Gone?, focused on the mystery and playfulness of a lost shadow, Sam and Duke’s Incredible Adventure in the Sky takes their journey to a new level of excitement and wonder. The third installment, Sam and Duke’s Big River Adventure, has proven to be the most successful, winning numerous awards for its engaging storytelling and heartwarming themes. Taylor hopes young viewers will “dare to dream and go on adventures of their own inspired by Sam and Duke.”
As the series continues to capture hearts, Tom Taylor’s stop-motion artistry remains at the core of what makes The Adventures of Sam & Duke so special. “I feel that people of all ages—and of course children—enjoy these heartwarming and enchanting tales for their own child or grandchild and for all of those adults who remain young at heart,” he notes. Looking ahead, Taylor has more in store for fans. “I am creating a different type of short stop-motion movie with a Tim Burtonesque feel and look,” he reveals. “The title of the movie is The Girl and the Swing. It will be filmed with a very surreal and ethereal aesthetic, and I’m going to try to rely solely on visual imagery and emotion.” This new project, inspired by the opening of the movie Up, promises to push the boundaries of storytelling.
As Taylor’s journey continues, The Adventures of Sam and Duke stands as a testament to the incredible care and effort put into every frame, bringing a world of imagination to vibrant life.

THE HEADSTRONG PROJECT expands services in Idaho
Eagle is home to many veterans who have served our country with honor and courage. Yet, the transition from military to civilian life can be challenging, especially when it comes to mental health. PTSD, depression, anxiety, and other trauma-related issues often linger long after service members return home.
Fortunately, there is hope for veterans struggling with these challenges, thanks to organizations like The Headstrong Project, which has recently expanded its services to Idaho. Partnering with clinicians from the Eagle Therapist Collective, The Headstrong Project, a nonprofit organization, ensures that veterans in our community have access to much-needed care.
HEALING THE HIDDEN WOUNDS OF WAR
THE HEADSTRONG PROJECT: A LIFELINE FOR VETERANS
Founded in 2012 by U.S. Marine Captain Zach Iscol, The Headstrong Project was born from a need to address veterans’ mental health crises. After his own experience in the Iraq War, Iscol recognized that many service members were not getting the mental health support they needed. Iscol and co-founders Al Rabil and Dave Petrucco launched Headstrong to provide trauma-focused, cost-free care for veterans and their families.
Today, The Headstrong Project is known for its commitment to removing barriers to mental health care. “There are so many challenges veterans face when it comes to getting help,” explains Kathryn Dosch, Sr. Director of Network Clinical Operations for The Headstrong Project. “Access to care via long wait times, inability to find military culturally competent providers, and the cost of care are among the top barriers. We’re trying to change that by offering 30 cost-free, confidential sessions and by partnering with local clinicians across the state and within the Treasure Valley.”
BRINGING VETERAN MENTAL HEALTH CARE TO IDAHO
Idaho is home to over 130,000 veterans, many of whom live in rural areas where mental health resources are scarce. “Our goal is to meet veterans where they are,” says Dosch. In Idaho, this means offering both in-person sessions and telehealth options for those who live in remote areas. “We want veterans to have access to the best traumafocused therapy, no matter where they live.”
Eagle resident and retired U.S. Army Major Jakob Bradfield highlights the challenges that make these services so critical. “Idaho’s veterans are diverse and in different stages of life,” he explains. “The time availability and physical location of a young single vet who just exited service differs greatly from that of the middle-aged working vet with a family or the older vet with mobility constraints. Having providers available is key, but seeking care remains a daunting challenge.”
That’s where Headstrong’s telehealth service becomes essential. “Telehealth allows us to reach veterans who might otherwise never seek treatment—meeting them where they are, both in terms of location and stage in life,” Dosch notes. Bradfield adds that for many veterans, it’s easy to put off seeking help when life’s demands pile up. “Life does not stop when you get out; we are out grinding on life just like everyone else. But nagging issues have a nasty habit of ‘sneaking up’ on a vet while they have their head down trying to meet all their civilian life obligations. These difficulties compound quickly if the vet lives hours away from the VA hospital or their work schedule doesn’t easily allow for normal business hour appointments.”
U.S. Army Major Jakob Bradfield and his wife Michele
One reason Headstrong is successfully addressing these challenges is an understanding of veteran needs and the quality of care its clinicians provide. Therapists like Mary Lott, who practices at the Eagle Therapist Collective, bring a deep understanding of veterans’ unique challenges. Lott, trained in evidence-based trauma treatments and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), uses proven methods to reduce PTSD symptoms and help veterans regain control of their lives. “Many veterans come to us after trying therapy that didn’t work for them,” Lott explains. “What sets Headstrong’s approach apart is that they focus on the specific needs of veterans. Having gone through their extensive training program, I understand the military culture and the trauma they’ve been through, and tailor my treatments to fit those needs.”
Lott emphasizes that creating a safe space is key to veterans’ healing. “Trauma can feel overwhelming, but when veterans feel understood and supported, real progress happens.” The results of this personalized care are clear. Many veterans who have received treatment through The Headstrong Project report significant improvements in their mental health and quality of life. One Army veteran shared, “After years of suffering in silence, I finally feel like I’ve found a place that understands me. The therapy I’ve received has been nothing short of life changing.”
Bradfield echoes these sentiments, pointing out the difference that military-competent clinicians are making in Idaho. “Warfare is dark business, but civilian life after the service is not all rainbows and sunshine. Trained clinicians who understand where you’ve been and where you’re trying to go are available for you.”
HOW THE COMMUNITY CAN SUPPORT VETERANS
As The Headstrong Project continues to expand in Idaho, community support remains essential. By eliminating the mental health stigma and fostering an environment that encourages veterans to seek help, we can play a critical role in their healing journey. “For veterans, knowing that their community is behind them can make all the difference,” says Lott. “The stigma around mental health can be so isolating, but when a community like Eagle steps up and says, ‘We’re here for you,’ it helps veterans feel supported.”
By standing with The Headstrong Project, we as a community can play a critical role in supporting our veterans’ mental health. Together, we can make sure that every veteran has the opportunity to find the peace and healing they deserve after their service.

PAWS Rescue AND THE HEART OF FOSTERING
Testimonials from Fostering Parents
SAVING LIVES, ONE FOSTER AT A TIME
PAWS Rescue, Inc., founded in March 2013, has been a beacon of hope for neglected, abused, and abandoned animals in Idaho. Over the years, PAWS has rescued thousands of cats and dogs, giving them a second chance at life. This rescue organization operates on the belief that every animal deserves a safe and loving home, whether through fostering or permanent adoption. They rescue animals of all breeds, ages, and health conditions—some found abandoned, some suffering from injuries, and others given up by their previous owners.
Each rescued animal is placed in foster homes, where they undergo veterinary evaluation, spay/neuter procedures, and any necessary medical treatment. PAWS Rescue works tirelessly to ensure that every animal receives the care and attention they need while waiting to find their forever homes.
THE BACKBONE OF PAWS: FOSTERING PARENTS’ STORIES
While PAWS is dedicated to saving lives, the true heroes of the organization are the fostering parents who open their homes and hearts to these animals in need. Below are testimonials from a few of these compassionate individuals, sharing their fostering journeys, challenges, and the joy that comes with saving lives.
Laura Bohle | “The biggest challenge for me is the moment a foster first enters my home. They’re confused, and I don’t know their background. It can be tough. Sometimes, all they need is peace, quiet, food, and love to decompress. The most rewarding moment, though, is when they’re adopted into a loving family. It’s always bittersweet, but the joy outweighs the sadness. I still mourn when they leave my care, but knowing they’ll be loved for the rest of their lives makes it all worth it.”
Julie McCallson | “I’ve fostered dozens of dogs over the years, usually one or two at a time. Sometimes, I even foster mamas and their puppies. People often ask how I avoid keeping my fosters. At first, it was tough, but I’ve come to love watching my fosters get adopted by amazing families. It feels like fate every time—they always end up where they belong. I still keep in contact with many of the families, and knowing that I made a difference brings me such joy. Fostering is worth it, because if I kept all my fosters, I wouldn’t be able to help more dogs! Of course, I’ve had my share of ‘foster fails,’ like my latest— a 10-year-old Chihuahua whose owner rehomed him with PAWS before she passed. He’s now my forever dog.”
Julie also highlighted the current challenge that many rescues face: shelters are overflowing with surrendered pets. The shortage of foster homes is one of the biggest obstacles. As Julie put it, “If rescue groups had more fosters, they could save and rehome more dogs.”
Jen Rupert | “One of my most memorable experiences was fostering Dorito, a long-haired tabby. She came from a hoarding situation and was thought to be pregnant, but after giving birth to mummified kittens, she was heartbroken. At the same time, I was bottle-feeding abandoned kittens from another foster cat. Dorito took them in as her own, even starting to lactate again. But weeks later, she fell ill. After a difficult recovery, she was finally reunited with her kittens and adopted. Dorito’s story was filled with harrowing moments, but in the end, she found her forever home.
Kate and David Bridges | “Fostering has such a positive impact on our lives. It’s hard to let them go, but the small heartbreak of saying goodbye is nothing compared to the joy of saving lives over and over. My advice to anyone considering fostering is to give it time, patience, and love. The reward of seeing an animal thrive and find a forever home is worth every challenge.
FOSTERING: A LIFE-SAVING MISSION
Andrea Sedorus | “Yes, we’ve had our ‘foster fails’—those special dogs that became part of our family forever. It’s always sad when a foster leaves for their permanent home, but we trust that they’re going to a loving family. We’ll continue fostering because it’s one of the most fulfilling things we’ve done.”
Fostering is a critical component of PAWS Rescue’s efforts to save lives. Without foster parents like Julie, Heidi, Laura, April, Jen, Kate, and Andrea, PAWS would not be able to rescue as many animals as they do. While fostering comes with its challenges, the testimonials from these foster parents show that the rewards far outweigh the hardships. With more foster homes, PAWS could save even more lives. If you’re considering fostering, know that you’ll be joining a community of dedicated animal lovers and making a difference—one life at a time.

AN UNEXPECTED INVITATION
HOW GABRIEL AND MARINA DERY’S ART AND STORY TRANSFORMED MY LIFE
A chance encounter with a remarkable couple led to a beautiful friendship and a deeper understanding of love, loss, and the beauty of everyday life.
It all started with a simple text message. Gabriel Dery, in his quiet yet genuine way, invited me to attend an art exhibit featuring his wife, Marina’s, street photography. As a writer, I receive countless story pitches, but this one was different. Gabriel wasn’t looking for publicity—he just wanted to see his wife happy, to share her work and joy with the world. That sincerity drew me in, and what began as a random invitation soon turned into one of the most meaningful connections of my life.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CY GILBERT
After a few conversations with Gabriel and Marina, it became clear that they were no ordinary couple. Married for nearly 30 years, their bond radiated a deep love and shared passion for life’s intricacies. Gabriel’s support of Marina’s art was more than just a gesture—it was a testament to the partnership they’ve nurtured over decades. The more I learned about Marina, the more I felt drawn to her. She reminded me of my mother, who had a PhD in psychology but passed away when I was just 13. That connection, along with our shared love for the human mind, made me feel like the universe had sent her to deliver a message I had yet to fully understand.
“IN STREET PHOTOGRAPHY, AS IN LIFE, IT’S IMPORTANT TO OBSERVE BOUNDARIES, TO RESPECT PEOPLE’S SPACE, PRIVACY, AND FEELINGS.”
Marina, a striking woman with stylish cat-eye glasses and a pop-collared wardrobe, carries herself with the grace of someone well-traveled and deeply compassionate. A former single mother, she’s endured immense loss, including the tragic death of her only son, a professional graphic designer in Berlin. Though she struggles to talk about it, she honors his memory with a special piece dedicated to him at every exhibit.
It was in one of those intimate moments with her that I suggested moving her art showcase to Rembrandts, one because she’s an Eagle resident, and two it’s a busy iconic location where she could impact wandering eyes. Her
her early work. “It was kind of a rough draft of many stories. Every place and every photo were amazing to me.”
Her photography, much like her life, is filled with complexities, joys, and sorrows. Marina immigrated to the U.S. alone, with no money and no English, eventually earning a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Her journey from political refugee to practicing clinician and professor gave her a unique lens through which to view the world— one that deeply informs her art. “In street photography, as in life, it’s important to observe boundaries, to respect people’s space, privacy, and feelings,” she explained.
street photography—candid, raw, and deeply emotional— seemed perfectly suited for the space. Starting in November, her work will be displayed at Rembrandts, where the community can experience the extraordinary within the ordinary moments she captures.
When I asked Marina to share more about her artistic journey, she described how street photography “selected her,” a natural extension of her observant nature as an immigrant from the former Soviet Union. Marina’s early experiences shaped her ability to see beyond appearances and capture the depth of human emotion. “I didn’t worry about the quality of my photos,” she said, reflecting on
Gabriel, too, has had an illustrious career as an eye doctor and professor, and together, they’ve traveled the globe. From China to South Africa, their experiences across cultures have only deepened their appreciation for the shared human experience.
Marina’s upcoming exhibit at Rembrandts is a testament to her life’s work—not just as a photographer, but as someone who sees the world with empathy and understanding. Her photography reveals the beauty in everyday life, a reminder that even the simplest moments hold extraordinary meaning.
As I reflect on my growing friendship with Marina and Gabriel, I am reminded of how life can bring us the people we need at exactly the right time. The universe, in its mysterious way, introduced me to these remarkable individuals not only to tell their story but perhaps to remind me of my own. And while I’m still waiting for that message from the universe, I’m grateful for the journey I’ve taken with the Derys.
Marina’s work will be on display at Rembrandts starting in November, and I encourage everyone to experience the powerful stories she tells through her lens. I have no doubt you’ll fall in love with her art, just as I’ve fallen in love with the couple behind it.
To enjoy more of Marina’s work, go to marinadery.com and visit Rembrandts starting in November.
A Sweet Fusion of Baking and Creativity
Mary Martin’s journey into the world of baking began with more than just a love for sweet treats. As a software engineer with a graduate degree in education, she had always thrived in solving problems and creating new solutions. But it was the birth of her daughter, Pyper, that led her to combine her passion for baking with the entrepreneurial spirit she’d always carried.
“WITH HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION, YOU CAN BUILD SOMETHING MEANINGFUL FROM THE GROUND UP.”
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGELA BUCCHINO AND MARY MARTIN
The name Pyping Delights reflects this blend of personal and creative inspiration. “The name is a play on words,” Mary explains. “It combines my daughter Pyper’s name with the piping technique in baking. ‘Delights’ captures the joy I want my customers to experience when they enjoy my creations.” Though her professional background might seem worlds apart from the kitchen, Mary sees strong connections between her skills as a software engineer and her work as a baker. “Baking requires precision, creativity, and attention to detail—skills that I’ve always valued in my career.”
Starting Pyping Delights while raising a young child has come with its challenges, but Mary’s background in education has helped her stay organized and focused. “Becoming a mother taught me the importance of patience and adaptability, which has carried over into running the business,” she says. “It’s about finding balance and making the most of every moment.”
When she launched Pyping Delights, her motivations were both personal and practical. “Of course, I wanted to provide a better future for Pyper,” Mary notes, “but I also wanted to show her that with hard work and determination, you can build something meaningful from the ground up.”
The challenges of balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship have shaped her approach to running the business. “Time management has been my biggest hurdle,” she says. “As a mom, your days are unpredictable, so finding moments to focus on the business can be tough. But knowing that I’m doing this for my family keeps me motivated.”
Looking ahead, Mary envisions opening a storefront in downtown Eagle. “I want it to be a space where people can come together, where moms can bring their kids to play while they enjoy a treat,” she explains. The idea of creating a welcoming, community-centered space is as central to her vision as the baked goods themselves. “I’d love for Pyping Delights to become a local hub where people can gather, relax, and enjoy.”
Reflecting on her journey, Mary credits both her technical background and her love for baking for shaping the future of her business. “Taking my passion for baking and turning it into a business was a leap, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. The early support from my customers really affirmed that I was on the right track.”

Barry Lasko’s story is one of transformation—from a skilled dentist to a dedicated woodworker who brings his craftsmanship to the heart of Eagle, Idaho. After a successful career in dentistry, Barry transitioned to woodworking, turning a lifelong passion into a meaningful way to connect with his community.
This year, Barry contributed to the Eagle Fall Crawl by crafting a large-scale chessboard, a giant Jenga set, and a striking foldable billboard backdrop for the event. Operating from his workshop, Lasko Woodcraft, Barry specializes in kiln drying, wood milling, custom furniture, and a wide range of handcrafted wood projects. Empowering Foster Youth
The Story of Freedom Youth Foundation and Parker’s Closet
In 2011, Shane Hanson embarked on a life-changing trip to Serbia that would alter the course of his life and eventually lead to the founding of the Freedom Youth Foundation. Touched deeply by the struggles of youth in Serbia, Shane returned home with a renewed purpose to serve children in need. Witnessing the vulnerability and resilience of these children compelled him to establish a foundation devoted to helping foster youth overcome their own challenges and thrive.
Since its founding, the Freedom Youth Foundation has grown into a multi-faceted organization offering critical programs that focus on sports, financial literacy, and career readiness to empower foster youth. These initiatives, Shane explains, are designed to “not only help foster youth survive but truly flourish.” One of the most impactful programs has been their sports clinics, which provide an escape for foster youth, helping them build not only physical skills but also trust and self-confidence. As Shane emphasizes, “Trust is the foundation of our work,” and these clinics open doors for deeper connections and provide a foundation of support that goes beyond sports.
A Family Commitment to Service
Shane’s commitment to the foundation has become a family affair, particularly involving his ten-year-old daughter, Parker. Watching his daughter’s compassion and enthusiasm for helping others inspired Shane to support Parker in creating her own division within the organization, called Parker’s Closet. Dedicated to providing new clothes for foster children, Parker’s Closet empowers young shoppers to select brandnew items that make them feel valued, loved, and confident.
Shane reflects on his daughter’s involvement with pride: “Parker genuinely wants to make a difference in their lives. She wants them to feel good, be confident, and know they are loved.” Parker’s Closet embodies this mission, going beyond clothing to ensure that foster youth feel a sense of belonging, security, and self-worth.
The Heartfelt Mission Behind Parker’s Closet
For Parker, the inspiration to start Parker’s Closet came from a simple yet powerful moment. “I just love the kids so much,” she shares. “One time, I saw some kids wearing old clothes and shoes with holes, and it made me really sad. I wanted to help them feel better by giving them nice things to wear.” With her grandmother’s encouragement, Parker began collecting new clothing to ensure these children have a fresh start, filled with pride and dignity.
The joy of witnessing foster youth shop for their very own items is something Parker treasures. One special memory, she recalls, was when a family of three children entered Parker’s Closet for the first time. “Their eyes lit up when they saw the clothes, and they had the best time shopping. It made me so happy to see them smile!” Moments like these affirm the importance of Parker’s Closet and fuel Parker’s dreams of expanding the charity to reach even more kids.
Community Support and Growing Dreams
As Parker’s Closet and Freedom Youth Foundation continue to grow, community support has become invaluable. Donations of new clothing, partnerships with local boutiques, and volunteering at events are all crucial ways the community can make a tangible difference in the lives of foster
youth. “We want to ensure the closet is always full,” Parker says, adding that they plan to extend this support to foster children throughout Idaho.
Shane Hanson’s dedication to Freedom Youth Foundation is deeply rooted in his values and vision for making a difference. Alongside his nonprofit work, he works countless hours as the CEO of Freedom Fiduciaries, a retirement plan advisory firm. Despite his demanding role in the corporate world, Shane makes time to give back without drawing any income from the foundation; every ounce of his commitment is for the children the foundation serves. In a world where the legitimacy of nonprofits is often questioned, Freedom Youth Foundation stands as a testament to the impact of sincere, grassroots effort. “I don’t do this for anything other than the kids,” says Shane, who believes that authentic support, not profit, should be the foundation of any charitable endeavor.
The foundation has recently opened a new location on West State Street. The grand opening saw foster kids shopping with Parker, filling the space with laughter, excitement, and new beginnings. A special QR code at the end of this article takes readers to several videos offering a glimpse into the joy foster youth experience with Freedom Youth Foundation.
Shane and Parker Hanson have proven that the passion to make a difference transcends age and background. Together, they’re building a brighter, more hopeful future for foster youth—one filled with opportunity, compassion, and confidence.
