EMBRACING ADVERSITY

The Inspiring Journey of Lauren and Jennifer Havel

A compelling story of passion, resilience, and creative brilliance unfolds through the lives of Lauren and Jennifer Havel. Jennifer, a seasoned screenwriter, and her 19-year-old daughter, Lauren, a burgeoning filmmaker, have faced personal and professional challenges that would have deterred many. Yet, they continue to shine brightly in the cinematic world, their spirits undaunted by adversity.

Lauren’s filmmaking journey began at 13 when she attended her first film camp. Her inaugural short film, “I Hate Kate,” an anti-bullying piece, set the stage for a career driven by purpose and passion. “It took six months to make, and it was an incredible experience. It wasn’t just about making a film; it was about creating something meaningful,” Lauren recalls.

The transition from homeschooling to full-time filmmaking was seamless for Lauren. “Homeschooling became my film school,” she explains. This unique educational approach allowed her to dive deep into her craft, honing her skills in various areas such as lighting and directing. Her subsequent projects, including her first feature film on screen addiction and a deeply personal film on dyslexia titled “Not Broken,” showcased her evolving expertise and storytelling prowess.

Jennifer, the supportive and talented screenwriter behind Lauren’s films, has been a pillar of strength throughout their journey. However, their latest project, “The Ground Beneath Our Feet,” proved to be their most challenging yet. During its production, Lauren faced the heartbreak of losing both her grandparents. Jennifer, meanwhile, got diagnosed with breast cancer, an ordeal that tested the family’s resilience to its limits. “It felt like evil was working against good,” Jennifer says, reflecting on the irony of the film that explores what happens when you take God out of a nation and morals are lost.

“...it’s about embracing life’s challenges with grace and determination, proving that passion and love can triumph over adversity.”

Despite these personal tragedies, Lauren and Jennifer persevered. Coordinating over 200 actors and extras, managing conflicting schedules, and rewriting scenes on the fly due to unforeseen circumstances became their new normal. Their unwavering commitment to their ‘calling’, craft and each other carried them through the darkest times.

“The Ground Beneath Our Feet,” set in the fifties, required meticulous research and a nuanced understanding of history. Feedback from viewers who lived through the 1950s validated their efforts. Lauren shares, “People who grew up during that era said it was very accurate.”

The film’s religious themes resonated with a diverse audience, including those with no religious affiliation. “It’s a very hopeful film,” Lauren explains. “In a world filled with hopelessness, it offers something everyone needs.”

As they navigate the complex world of film distribution, aiming for a theatrical release, Lauren and Jennifer continue to inspire with their story of perseverance and creativity. Their journey underscores the power of art to heal, connect, and bring light even in the face of overwhelming odds.

In the end, the Havels’ story is not just about making films; it’s about embracing life’s challenges with grace and determination, proving that passion and love can triumph over adversity. Their tale serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path for aspiring filmmakers and artists everywhere.

RESIDENTS TO

LAUNCH THE INAUGURAL BOISE FILM FEST

MARK AND CHRISTINE HOLDER BRING THE HOLLYWOOD EXPERIENCE TO IDAHO’S CAPITAL

Mark Holder and Christine Holder, residents of Eagle, are preparing to launch the Boise Film Festival, a project born out of their passion for film and their desire to bring more cultural offerings to their new home. Having moved from Los Angeles four years ago, the Holders found themselves surprised by the vibrant arts scene in Boise.

Christine Holder, a founding partner of Wonder Street Entertainment, serves as a producer and manager, handling feature and television projects while also representing talent and literary figures. With a background in studio features and PR, she transitioned into management and production in 2008. Her notable projects include Netflix’s acclaimed “Beasts of No Nation,” starring Idris Elba, and the Octavia Spencer-led series “Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker.” She’s currently an executive producer on the hit Netflix series “Bandidos.”

Mark Holder, also a founding partner of Wonder Street Entertainment, oversees a diverse team of managers and producers while producing impactful stories for television and film. His credits include STX films’ “The Mauritanian” and Netflix’s “Beasts of No Nation.” He was also an Executive Producer on CBS’s “East New York” and the Netflix series “Bandidos.”

“When we came here, we were so pleasantly surprised by how robust the art scene was here,” Christine shared. “So, we thought, why not start a film festival? This is a city that already has the appetite for the arts.”

The Boise Film Festival will take place at two main locations: the Egyptian Theater and The Flicks.

Additionally, the festival will feature a special event called Throwback Thursday, held at the Egyptian Theater, where a classic film will be screened and followed by a panel of special guests to kick off the festival each year. Mark elaborated on this, saying, “Throwback Thursday will be an opportunity for the community to join together and enjoy a family-friendly film and have engagement with the folks involved in making the picture.

Christine added, “For Throwback Thursday this year, we’re starting with the feature film ‘Miracle,’ which is the story of the 1980 USA Olympic Hockey team who defeated the rival Russians in an epic battle. Also, it happens to be the historical 20th anniversary of the film so there is a lot to celebrate.”

With their extensive background in the film industry, owning a management production company called Wonder Street, Mark and Christine are well suited to take on this endeavor. Mark explained, “We have an unlimited amount of passion for film and filmmakers, and a vast and diverse experience in film and television production. That coupled with our enthusiasm for all things Boise gives us the needed stamina for this type of undertaking.”

Special guest Mike Eruzione, captain of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, will attend the opening night screening of “Miracle” on Thursday, October 10, followed by a Q&A session with Eruzione and producer Mark Ciardi. The screening and afterparty will be presented and attended by the local professional hockey team, the Steelheads.

The festival will also feature an opening night VIP party at The Western from 9:00-11:00 pm and a closing night

Gala at The Grove, hosted by NFL player and America’s Got Talent’s Jon Dorenbos.

Highlighting the educational aspect of the festival, CSI creator Anthony Zuiker will be teaching a masterclass on writing for television on Saturday, October 12th.

KeyBank, the main sponsor of the festival, expressed their excitement about the event. “KeyBank is excited to be a

sponsor of the inaugural Boise Film Festival. This event will prove to be a perennial attraction for Downtown Boise, drawing diverse patrons, increasing exposure for our local restaurants, and putting yet another attraction in Idaho to draw attention to the state. Boise Film Festival’s board has developed a cultural opportunity for us Idahoans to be proud of! We can’t wait to see the memories that will be created,” said KeyBank’s Idaho Market President Scott Schlange.

The Holders have also brought on board seasoned programmers Ash Hoyle from Sundance and Caroline Bloom from IFFLA to craft the film program, ensuring a diverse and high-quality lineup.

The Holders aim to make the Boise Film Festival an accessible and community-oriented event. “We really wanted to make sure that the community was involved and that they felt like they had meaningful participation,” Christine stated. “We want people to come here for something like a film festival and really see what we have to offer.”

As they work on finalizing details for the festival, including film submissions and programming, the Holders are excited to see their vision come to life.

Looking ahead, the Holders have a long-term goal of combining their efforts with the local film community and growing a successful film festival in Boise. “We want to create a film festival that is sustainable over the years, allowing new voices to be heard,” Mark shared. “And eventually, we hope to host more filmmaking here in town, making Boise a hub for the industry.”

Christine added, “One of the biggest challenges is the lack of infrastructure and crew teams here. Right now, you have to bring various crew in from out of state for many positions on the film, which is cost-prohibitive. But we believe with the right support, efforts and continued work with the existing film community we can overcome these challenges and help establish Boise as a destination for filmmaking.”

Dan and Laura are excited about the future. “We’ve hired a great franchise attorney and are in the final stages of getting all the legal work done. Our goal is to start selling franchises by the end of summer,” Dan explains. “We want to make sure that the first franchisee has the same experience as the 100th, so we’re taking our time to get it right. INTRODUCING AIKENS PLAZA

An Icon in the Making

In an exclusive interview with Stephen Roth, the visionary behind Aikens Plaza, Eagle Magazine delved into the innovative design and strategic planning that make this mixed-use development stand out. Roth, an architect with a penchant for creating spaces that feel iconic from day one, shared insights into the project’s unique features and the thought process behind its development.

A VISION FOR VERSATILITY

“Aikens Plaza is a mixed-use project with three commercial spaces,” Roth explained, gesturing to the various units. “These spaces are flexible; they can be split or combined, depending on the tenant’s needs. We’re just starting to market these spaces, and we envision possibilities ranging from a restaurant to a coffee shop, deli, or bakery.”

Roth’s enthusiasm was palpable as he described the outdoor patios and the integration with the natural landscape. “There’s an outdoor patio adjacent to one of the units, overlooking a creek,” he said, clarifying, “It’s actually a drainage ditch, but it adds a nice touch.”

RESIDENTIAL EXCELLENCE

The residential units at Aikens Plaza are designed with both comfort and security in mind. “We have finished residential units on the second and third levels— four per level,” Roth noted. “Each unit is two bedrooms and two baths, set up like a double master suite with privacy doors. They also feature recessed patios, offering better privacy than typical townhomes.”

Security is a top priority at Aikens Plaza. “We’ve installed a sophisticated security system with facial recognition and access codes,” Roth explained. “This appeals particularly to our target audience of single, older women who value security.”

We’re targeting older folks who are downsizing, moving into something more manageable.

TARGETED APPEAL

Roth identified the primary demographic for Aikens Plaza as “downsizers” and older adults seeking a secure, low-maintenance lifestyle. “We’re targeting older folks who are downsizing, moving into something more manageable,” he said. “My wife and I are considering keeping a unit here as a second home.”

Despite the appeal to an older demographic, Roth acknowledged the need for modern conveniences. “Our audience isn’t very techsavvy, so we’re hoping to reach them through outlets like Eagle Magazine, which has a strong online presence.”

THE FUTURE OF AIKENS PLAZA

With three of the eight residential units already spoken for, Roth is optimistic about the project’s future. “We’re confident that these units will sell quickly once people see the quality and thought that’s gone into them,” he said.

As Stephen Roth continues to market Aikens Plaza, his vision for a development that feels iconic from the start is coming to life. With its versatile commercial spaces, secure and comfortable residential units, and strategic appeal to downsizers, Aikens Plaza is set to become a landmark in the community.

THE TODOROVS’ JOURNEY BUILDING DREAMS AND HOMES

How Todor and Maia Todorov became pillars of the Treasure Valley’s building industry through love, dedication, and architectural expertise

Meeting Todor and Maia Todorov at Rice Thai Cuisine felt more like catching up with old friends than conducting an interview. As the sun set over the patio, they shared the story of their journey, seamlessly blending their professional and personal lives in a truly inspirational way.

The Todorovs, now staples in the building industry, began their journey back in 2003. With backgrounds in architecture and engineering, they initially focused on creating custom architectural elements like fireplace surroundings, columns, arches, and moldings through their business, Alternative Stone. “We loved working with top builders and designers to elevate a home’s beauty,” Todor said, his eyes lighting up with passion. By 2014, their love for the entire construction process led them to expand into building custom homes. Starting in Twin Falls, they quickly moved to the Treasure Valley area, where they built their first custom home in 2017. Their headquarters moved to Boise, marking a significant milestone in their journey. Their homes, primarily spec homes, have evolved over the years. Starting with an 1800-square-foot home in Three Falls, they’ve progressively increased the size and complexity of their projects. “We started with old-world exteriors, and now we’re building 3500-square-foot modern-style homes in Eagle’s Legacy subdivision,” Maia explained. Their reputation is built on quality and attention to detail. Todor mentioned, “We prefer to focus on three or four homes a year to ensure each one meets our high standards.” This dedication to quality is evident in their long-standing relationships with other respected builders in the area, such as Northern Construction and Shadow Mountain.

When asked about their process, Maia laughed, “We don’t rely solely on software or trends; it’s a combination of experience and intuition.” Their teamwork is seamless, reflecting their shared history

and mutual understanding. They met in Bulgaria while studying architecture and engineering, which pursued for 17 years until they moved to the US. Their bond has only strengthened over the years. “We’ve been together for 40 years,” Maia said, smiling at Todor.

Despite their busy schedules, they find time to enjoy life and travel. “Last month, we visited friends in North Carolina and traveled to Virginia Beach,” Maia shared. Their love for travel is evident, and they often take trips together. They also enjoy exploring local destinations like Ponderosa State Park and Redfish Lake, where they’ve made many cherished memories. Their family is an integral part of their lives. “We have two granddaughters, and we love taking them on trips,” Todor said. They recently discovered a new spot, Trinity Resort, just outside of Mountain Home, which offers a perfect blend of relaxation and family activities.

As we wrapped up our conversation, it was clear that Todor and Maia’s success is rooted in their passion for building and their love for each other. Their journey from Bulgaria to Idaho is a testament to their hard work and dedication. They’ve not only built beautiful homes but also a beautiful life together.

Leaving the restaurant, I couldn’t help but feel inspired by the Todorovs. They embody the perfect blend of professional excellence and personal fulfillment, proving that with love and dedication, you can truly build something extraordinary.

THE BENEFITS OF A

DIGITAL DETOX

FOR ENTREPRENEURS

Treasure Valley is home to a vibrant community of makers, creators, and business owners who are constantly hustling to stay ahead. However, in this digital age, the constant barrage of emails, texts, and notifications can become overwhelming, leading to burnout and stress. As a business owner in the Treasure Valley, taking a digital detox might be the strategic move you need to regain control, improve productivity, and allow technology to work for you, not against you.

WHY CONSIDER A DIGITAL DETOX?

A digital detox can help entrepreneurs in the Treasure Valley stay productive, creative, and motivated. By stepping away from the digital noise, you can focus on the bigger picture and the tasks that truly matter. Here are some key benefits:

Increased Focus: Unplugging from digital distractions allows you to concentrate better on your tasks, leading to improved efficiency and effectiveness.

Stress Reduction: Taking a break from constant connectivity helps reduce stress levels, providing mental clarity and relaxation.

Enhanced Relationships: Disconnecting from devices allows you to spend quality time with family and friends, strengthening personal connections.

Time Management: A digital detox can help you reassess how you spend your time, enabling you to prioritize and manage tasks more effectively.

IMPLEMENTING HANDS-OFF MARKETING

Even as you step back from digital engagement, your business can continue to thrive through handsoff marketing strategies. Embrace content marketing techniques to maintain an active online presence without constant involvement. Here’s how:
