Turning tragedy into advocacy for food allergy awareness and accessibility

Local Eagle resident Heather Langer’s journey with ReeseStrong, Inc. began with a mother’s unimaginable loss, transforming into a beacon of hope and advocacy for food allergy awareness and accessibility. In an exclusive interview with Eagle Magazine, Heather shared her deeply personal journey and her unwavering commitment to making a difference in honor of her daughter, Reese.

The journey began tragically in May of 2021 when Heather’s daughter, Reese, lost her life to a fatal anaphylactic reaction after consuming a dessert at her cheer banquet. Heather’s grief turned into a fierce determination to prevent other families from experiencing such devastating loss. “ReeseStrong was created with the goal of helping children and their families fight food allergies through community awareness, education, and advocacy in her honor,” Heather shared.

Heather’s advocacy took her to Washington DC, a trip she and Reese were meant to take together for her 8th-grade class trip. Instead, Heather found herself raising awareness and working on policy changes with top legislators. The focus? The availability and affordability of life-saving medication like EpiPens.

“One of the biggest burdens food allergy families face, is the rising cost of epinephrine auto injectors that expire every year,” Heather emphasized.

The statistics surrounding food allergies are staggering.

Over 33 million Americans are affected, with nearly 10% of Idaho’s population grappling with this issue. Heather stressed the importance of education, awareness, and preparedness in managing food allergies, especially among children. “Epi first, Epi fast,” she urged, highlighting the critical need for immediate action in the event of an anaphylactic reaction.

ReeseStrong aims to make a tangible difference by empowering children with the knowledge and self-care skills to navigate life with food allergies confidently. Despite facing numerous challenges, including emotional hurdles and logistical complexities, Heather remains

steadfast in her mission. ReeseStrong organizes community events annually to raise awareness and support, including a Walk and Memorial Golf Tournament.

Influencing policymakers and healthcare providers to prioritize the accessibility and affordability of EpiPens is a key focus for ReeseStrong. Heather passionately advocates for policy changes that would cap the out-of-pocket cost of epinephrine auto injectors and improve training for food service employees to prevent allergic reactions.

Heather’s determination to fight for change stems from the heartbreaking loss of her daughter. “Losing a child is painful, especially when it can be prevented,”

she shared. Reese remains Heather’s strength and motivation to continue her advocacy work.

To those facing personal tragedies and passionate about advocating for causes close to their hearts, Heather offers simple yet powerful advice: “Keep going. Your WHY is your fuel.”

“ReeseStrong was created with the goal of helping children and their families fight food allergies through community awareness, education, and advocacy in her honor.”

Looking ahead, Heather hopes ReeseStrong will continue to broaden its impact, fostering environments where individuals and families feel understood and safe. Through initiatives like working with local restaurants to create safer dining environments, ReeseStrong is dedicated to making living with food allergies easier and less restrictive for everyone involved.

Heather’s trip to Washington DC was filled with determination and purpose, advocating for legislative changes that would benefit the food allergy community. Fired up and ready to make waves, Heather and ReeseStrong are committed to creating a safer, more inclusive world for those affected by food allergies.

In closing, Heather invites the community to join ReeseStrong in their mission, whether through participating in events, spreading awareness, or supporting policy changes. Together, they strive to honor Reese’s memory and make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals and families navigating the challenges of food allergies.

Explore Eagle app offers a seamless gateway to community engagement

In a world where digital platforms are becoming increasingly integral to everyday life, cities are embracing technology to enhance their residents’ experiences and attract visitors. Eagle, Idaho, is no exception. With the launch of the Explore Eagle Idaho app, the city aims to weave together the fabric of its community, offering residents and tourists alike a comprehensive guide to all things Eagle.

26 /52 MAY JUN 2024 | VOLUME 16 | ISSUE 6 DEVELOPMENT

The inspiration behind the app was simple yet profound: to create a seamless connection between individuals and the vibrant experiences Eagle has to offer. Spearheaded by Dana Biberston, the Public Information Officer, and Tammi Halcomb, the Economic Developer, the app was envisioned as a one-stop destination for everything Eagle-related. From businesses and services to recreational opportunities and local events, the Explore Eagle app puts the entire city in the palm of your hand.

One of the app’s standout features is its inclusivity. It caters to both residents and visitors, offering a plethora of functionalities to enhance their experience in Eagle. Whether you’re looking for a new dining spot, exploring downtown, or seeking out recreational activities, the Explore Eagle app has you covered. It even provides valuable information on areas to live, showcasing the city’s residential offerings.

The development process wasn’t without its challenges, particularly in raising awareness and encouraging community engagement. However, with dedicated maintenance by the Public Information Officer, the app has continued to evolve, ensuring that it remains relevant and up to date.

What sets the Explore Eagle app apart is its laser focus on all things Eagle, Idaho. Unlike generic platforms, this app is tailored specifically to the city, providing users with a curated experience that encapsulates the essence of Eagle’s charm and appeal.

Since its launch, the app has garnered positive feedback from users, with businesses and organizations lauding its ability to promote their offerings to the wider community. Residents, too, have embraced the app, discovering new places and experiences that cater to their interests.

In alignment with the city’s goals, the Explore Eagle app fosters clear communication and supports economic development by offering businesses and nonprofits a platform to showcase their presence. It also encourages community engagement, with features such as free access and direct feedback channels.

Looking ahead, the app continues to evolve, with recent updates including new features like parking maps to navigate downtown construction projects. Through ongoing enhancements and community involvement, the Explore Eagle app remains a vital tool for both locals and visitors alike.

Ultimately, the Explore Eagle app isn’t just about providing information—it’s about unlocking the city’s potential. By offering a comprehensive and engaging platform, it not only enriches individual experiences but also contributes significantly to the local economy and tourism industry. In Eagle, Idaho, the Explore Eagle app isn’t just an app—it’s a gateway to endless possibilities.

As Eagle continues to embrace innovation through initiatives like the Explore Eagle app, it’s important for both city officials and local businesses to recognize the broader landscape of new products and platforms emerging in the digital sphere. While these endeavors hold immense potential, it’s crucial to approach them with a discerning eye.

In a world driven by data and metrics, it’s essential to weigh the statistics and measure the impact of new initiatives. Whether it’s a city-led project like the Explore Eagle app or a privately developed product, understanding its efficacy is key to ensuring its success and sustainability.

For businesses looking to capitalize on digital platforms, resources such as the Economic Development sector website, Eaglemagazine.com Directory, and the Eagle Chamber site offer invaluable opportunities for visibility and networking.

In the heart of Eagle, where the spirit of the Wild West thrives, Brittney Bequette’s Western Winks Boutique is a digital corral for all things Western fashion. In an exclusive interview with Eagle Magazine, Brittney shares her journey from cosmetology school graduate to the proud owner of a thriving online Western wear boutique, weaving her own words with the essence of Eagle’s Western flair.

“From the moment I set foot in Eagle, it felt like home,” Brittney reflects, her voice echoing the sentiment of many locals who embrace the town’s Western charm. “Growing up here, surrounded by the warmth of the community and the excitement of events like the Eagle Rodeo, I knew I wanted to bring that Western spirit to others through fashion.”

Born in Sacramento, California, Brittney’s roots run deep in Eagle, where she and her mother would frequent the downtown boutiques, soaking in the Western vibes.

“I wanted to create a space where people could indulge in both Western fashion and beauty.”

“I remember the thrill of wandering through the Eagle Rodeo and being captivated by the Western Boutique vendors,” she recalls, a hint of nostalgia coloring her words. “That‘s where the seed was planted for Western Winks.”

After graduating from Eagle High School, Brittney pursued her passion for beauty, attending cosmetology school. However, it was her venture into eyelash extensions that truly ignited her entrepreneurial spirit. “I‘ve always had a passion for Western wear, ever since those early rodeo days,” she shares. “I wanted to combine that with my love for beauty, and that‘s how Western Winks came to be.”

LIFESTYLE

Despite the challenges of running an online business, Brittney remains undeterred, finding strength in community collaboration. “Connecting with fellow entrepreneurs and vendors has been invaluable,” she acknowledges. “We support each other, just like the tight-knit community here in Eagle.”

For Brittney, every customer interaction is an opportunity to spread joy and gratitude.

“When someone makes a purchase from Western Winks, they‘re not just buying a product,” she emphasizes. “They‘re joining a community, and I‘m honored to be a part of their Western journey.”

As Western Winks continues to flourish, Brittney‘s aspirations remain anchored in her Eagle roots. “I want to bring the Western Winks experience to more people, while staying true to our Western heritage,” she asserts. “Eagle has shaped me, and I want to share that with the world, one stylish cowboy boot at a time.”

RICHARD NALDER

The barber entrepreneur changing the game

Richard Nalder, the founder of Redlan’s Gentlemen’s Grooming, has embarked on a remarkable journey since the inception of his quaint shop on First Street in Eagle, Idaho. What started as a humble venture has evolved into a thriving business empire, with Nalder at the helm of innovation and growth.

34 /52 MAY JUN 2024 | VOLUME 16 | ISSUE 6 ENTREPRENEUR

In an interview with Eagle Magazine in December 2016, Nalder shared insights into his burgeoning business. Fast forward to the present day, and his success story has only gained momentum. With over nine crewmates and an expansion to a new location near Ahi Sushi, Nalder’s Redlan Cuts has become a cornerstone of the Eagle community.

But Nalder’s influence extends beyond the confines of his own shop. Recognizing his acumen for business and keen eye for spotting untapped potential, companies across the United States have sought his expertise as a consultant. Much like the famed TV show “The Profit,” Nalder steps into struggling salons, identifies inefficiencies, and transforms them into profitable enterprises. From Texas to California, his regional reach is testament to his prowess in revitalizing businesses.

However, Nalder’s success story is not without its challenges. The barbering industry faces significant headwinds, with projections indicating a 30% shrinkage in numbers. In contrast, med spas are expected to see a 17% increase. Despite these industry shifts, Nalder remains steadfast in his commitment to local businesses, urging communities to support and embrace the tradition of regular grooming.

Central to Nalder’s success is his dedicated team of employees, who embody loyalty and passion for their craft. Together, they deliver an unparalleled experience to customers, blending traditional barbering techniques with modern amenities such as straight razor finishes and hot towel rituals.

Yet, behind every successful entrepreneur lies a personal story of serendipity. In Nalder’s case, it was a chance encounter at hair school that led to the most significant partnership of all—his marriage. As a student in cosmetology school, Nalder was introduced to his future wife by a cosmetology instructor. Nalder’s journey is not only one of professional growth but also personal fulfillment.

As Richard Nalder continues to leave an indelible mark on the grooming industry, his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere. With passion, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence, he has transformed a humble barber shop into a regional powerhouse, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond the confines of his shop doors.

A CANDID CONVERSATION WITH MAYOR BRAD PIKE

In an exclusive sit-down with Eagle magazine, Mayor Brad Pike offered a glimpse into the inner workings of his role as the chief steward of his community. With an affable demeanor and a penchant for storytelling, Pike delved deep into the nuances of his responsibilities, weaving together personal anecdotes and profound insights into a tapestry of compassionate leadership.

As Pike delved into the intricacies of his role, he drew parallels between his experiences as a firefighter and his current position as mayor. “After facing severe trauma in numerous homes as a firefighter, I realized the profound importance of compassion, kindness, and connection in times of crisis,” Pike shared. “Entering those homes, you’re confronted with the raw humanity of people in their most vulnerable moments. It’s a humbling experience that teaches you to listen deeply and respond with empathy.”

As Pike articulated his metaphor of the mayor’s position as the central hub in a wheel of community stakeholders, his passion for connection and collaboration became palpable. “All those folks end up at the hub for somebody’s recommendation, somebody’s needs or whatever,” he explained, painting a vivid picture of his belief in the interconnectedness of governance and community life. Moreover, Pike’s faith-based values deeply inform his approach to leadership, emphasizing the principle of being other-centered. “My faith teaches me to prioritize the well-being of others above my interests,” Pike explained. “It‘s about seeing the humanity in each person and striving to be a source of support and understanding.”

Throughout the conversation, Pike’s humility and genuine curiosity shone through. “I want to be the dumbest guy in the room,” he confessed, emphasizing his belief in the power of learning from others. “The staff has been here, and done that, I’m the sponge, only adding value with my experience when needed Pike elaborated on the concept of nurturing and supporting those in governing roles. “Just like a bird in a nest knows all it needs to know before leaving, I believe in empowering and guiding those in leadership positions,” Pike elucidated. “You provide them with the

necessary tools and advice, but ultimately, you let them soar on their own, knowing that they have the skills and knowledge to succeed.”

Drawing from his former profession and his faith-based values, Pike spoke eloquently about the importance of empathy and understanding in his interactions with constituents. “I want to know the soul of the person... I need to be your shelter,” he reflected, revealing the depth of his commitment to serving as a compassionate advocate for his community.”

As a first responder, you need to listen and have compassion. “You face very serious situations that impact people.” He drew parallels, meeting with businesses facing the ACHD construction challenge. “I see myself as a facilitator, bringing together different perspectives and expertise to address the challenges facing our community,” Pike emphasized. “Whether it‘s navigating complex infrastructure projects or supporting local businesses, my goal is to empower others to make informed decisions and take ownership of their roles in shaping our collective future.”

As the dialogue unfolded, Pike shared personal anecdotes that illuminated his deep-seated concern for the well-being of those he serves. From discussing home safety measures to recounting moments of crisis and resilience, Pike’s warmth and sincerity resonated with authenticity. He’s a believer in safety, whether it is education on hot lamps in children’s rooms, to adding more police, routine, law, and order. A life without order is erratic.

Amid challenges and uncertainties, Pike’s mindset seems to be the right one, however, time will tell.

OF APPROVAL FROM MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

As the editor of Eagle Magazine and a mother to two sons, Liam and Niall, I’ve had the privilege of delving into Mathnasium’s unique approach to tutoring in their learning program, guided by insights from Dan Hintz, the local Mathnasium franchise owner. “We start by listening to what’s going on with a student and what are the parent’s/student’s goals,” Dan shared, echoing Mathnasium’s commitment to personalized learning. “Once we know exactly where they are at in their math skills, we recommend a learning plan and then adjust to parent/student goals,” he explained, emphasizing the tailored approach to addressing each student’s needs.

There are four math Mathnasium learning centers in the Treasure Valley. However, Dan is excited to be the first Mathnasium owner among 1100 centers in the nation to also offer math help in your home, setting them apart from traditional tutoring centers. Hundreds of Eagle families over the past decade have driven to Meridian Mathnasium, but for some it’s a bit too far, so corporate Mathnasium is allowing Dan to send his tutors to you!

Reflecting on my sons’ experience at Mathnasium, I couldn’t help but echo the sentiments of countless other parents. “In just a few short months, they have gained extraordinary confidence with their math,” drawing parallels between their journey and the testimonials from Mathnasium parents.

“The boys love going to Mathnasium, partially due to the reward system and the kickback atmosphere. It’s an engaging approach that keeps learning fun.”

Dan’s insights shed light on Mathnasium’s comprehensive curriculum and teaching strategies.

“Mathnasium materials teach math in a way that makes sense to students,” he noted, highlighting the program’s effectiveness in resonating with learners. “We retest and reteach until they are able to demonstrate mastery, before moving them on to higher concepts,” he added, underscoring the importance of reinforcing mastery before progression.

Through collaborative efforts with families and continuous training for tutors, Mathnasium ensures a supportive learning environment. “When we meet with a family, we draw out a picture of a brick wall with missing bricks,” Dan explained, illustrating the process of identifying and addressing math gaps.

“Our rigorous testing, screening, and continuous training process for instructors make our staff the best math help resource anywhere,” he added, emphasizing the dedication to excellence in tutoring.

Mathnasium’s approach to tutoring transcends traditional methods, offering a tailored learning experience addressing individual needs and cultivating long-term success in mathematics. From personalized assessments to supportive teaching strategies, Mathnasium equips students like Liam and Niall with the tools they need to excel academically and beyond. As the editor of Eagle Magazine and a Mathnasium mom myself, I’m excited to spread the news that now Mathnasium can help your students anywhere you want... in center, in home, in a library, or online with a live face to face tutor... and in any way you want... just 1 on 1 homework help, a learning program to fill in math gaps, or any combination!
