GROWING UP IN EAGLE A TAPESTRY OF MEMORIES BY TWO SISTERS In the late summer of 1977, Pam McClenny was a teenager when her family made the journey from Kimberly, Idaho, to the then-small farming community of Eagle. Reflecting on that time, Pam shares, “Once we passed Collister, there wasn’t much besides farms until we got to Eagle.” They settled in Eagle Village, a new subdivision behind where the Library is now, surrounded by vacant space, until the Library was built in 1999. Pam vividly remembers, “We didn’t get phone lines for a couple of months, so whenever we needed to make a phone call, we went to the pay phone by Orville Jacksons.” Pam reflects on the shopping scene. “There was a little store called Jerry’s Market where Smoky Mountain is currently, but when we needed groceries, Butterys on the corner of Cole and Fairview was the nearest store.” Albertsons arrived and expanded in 1996. “Eagle was so small, but there was some commerce such as a meat packing plant, The Boise Valley Packing Co, which was located on the river where S Rivershore Ln is located now; Tri-City Meats on State St, and the Bank Club Bar where Da Vinci’s is now.” Eagle, back then, was a tight-knit community with its unique charm. Pam’s involvement in the Eagle Chamber of Commerce during the 90s marked a pivotal period in the town’s history. She recollects, “I was at the groundbreaking for the Eagle by-pass, sat in on talks to bring a High School to Eagle, [and] discussion on strict sign and architectural guidelines.” The goal was clear – to preserve the charm of a small town amid growth.

“NONE OF US WILL EVER FORGET WHEN THE EGG FARM BURNED DOWN. WHAT A MAJOR PART OF EAGLE. I MISS THE BIG ROOSTER THAT STOOD OUT FRONT.”
Pam’s sister, Kim Winkle expresses the impact of Eagle’s growth on her memories, stating, “That small town I grew up in is long gone.” She fondly remembers waiting at the original Eagle Fire Station where Customedica is now for the Ski Bus, sharing, “We knew everyone on the bus, so it was always a good time.” However, as the years passed, the landscape of Eagle transformed, with Eagle Road being widened and developments like Two Rivers Subdivision altering the familiar scenery. “At the time we thought, who would buy that land to build on, it always floods, it’s next to the river,” said Kim, not thinking of the pond diversions. One significant event etched in Kim’s memory is the burning down of the iconic Egg Farm. She mourns the loss, saying, “None of us will ever forget when the Egg Farm burned down. What a major part of Eagle. I miss the Big Rooster that stood out front.” The main office and site for the egg farm sat where the Eagle Fire Department currently is and stretched 68 acres. Both sisters reflect on Eagle Fun Days, a beloved event that brought the community together. Pam recalls the wet and wild parades and the infamous Eagle Fire Department Nut Feed, named Rocky Mountain Oyster Feed. “People would stand in line for hours... Once you got ‘inside,’ it was just a big party with a good band.” However, Kim notes
a change in dynamics, mentioning the event’s cancellation due to issues like excessive drinking and fights. With Eagle becoming the Beverly Hills of Boise, and additional safety measures added, the Nut Feed was brought back. As Eagle transformed, Kim reflects on the evolving sense of community. “Honestly, in my opinion, I feel like the sense of community and connection has been lost with the growth.” Yet, she acknowledges the positive impact of growth in bringing a High School and Middle School, fostering a different kind of unity. In the face of change, both sisters emphasize the importance of preserving Eagle’s history. Kim points out the significance of City planners’ decision to divert traffic from downtown, preserving older buildings and fostering a more communal atmosphere. Looking to the future, the sisters envision Eagle continuing to be a great place to raise a family, embracing growth while holding onto the core values that define the town. Through the lens of Pam McClenny and Kim Winkle’s memories, Eagle, Idaho, emerges as a town woven with threads of nostalgia, growth, and a resilient spirit that transcends time.

E X TE ND-A-HOO K A decade-long journey from inspiration to innovation In the quiet town of Eagle, Cynthia Stammnitz embarked on a remarkable journey that led to the creation of Extend-a-Hook, a revolutionary invention that changed the way we hang items. In an exclusive interview, Cynthia shared insights into her decade-long endeavor, highlighting the inspiration, challenges, and triumphs that shaped Extend-a-Hook’s path to success. The spark for Extend-a-Hook ignited during Ray and Cynthia’s time living in an RV while building their home. Faced with the challenge of drying clothes efficiently, she envisioned a hook that could extend like an old car antenna, offering a versatile solution for hanging various items. Cynthia’s motivation persisted through financial hurdles, with pauses in development to navigate patent expenses and manufacturing challenges.
“It came to me when I needed a solution, and I wanted it to be something simple yet transformative.” Building an ironclad patent became a pivotal step in Extend-a-Hook’s journey. Cynthia’s husband, a true MacGyver, crafted an impressive prototype, setting the stage for a patent search and the subsequent patent application. Cynthia emphasizes the importance of commitment, financial resilience, and understanding the type of patent your invention requires. “Entering the world of patents is a long-term commitment, both financially and timewise. It’s a journey of uncertainties, but the right patent can be your key to success.”

Recognizing their strengths and limitations, Cynthia and her husband partnered with Liberty Hardware for manufacturing and distribution. Acknowledging their expertise in invention but not in the distribution process, this strategic collaboration enabled Extend-a-Hook to reach platforms like Amazon, Wayfair, and Build.
“Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is crucial. Inventing is one thing, but getting it to market involves a different skill set.” The journey was riddled with financial constraints, design dilemmas, branding decisions, and the complexities of selling a unique product. Cynthia’s perseverance, resilience, and selfreliance were crucial in overcoming these challenges, emphasizing the personal investment of blood, sweat, and tears. “You can’t turn to anybody but yourself. It’s about pursuing a task and moving forward, no matter what hurdles come your way.” Partnership with Liberty Hardware paved the way for Extenda-Hook to be available on various platforms. The collaboration opened doors to potential retail giant Home Depot, marking a significant milestone. Cynthia reflects on the power of strategic partnerships and the necessity of embracing new technologies, such as social media, to showcase the product’s versatility. “Liberty Hardware’s support has been pivotal. Embracing social media was a new chapter for me, essential to demonstrating the many uses of the hook.” As ExtendaHook gains recognition, Cynthia envisions its widespread use in hotels, apartments, closets, bathrooms, and beyond. The patented design sets it apart, offering versatility that goes beyond conventional hooks. Cynthia also expresses her desire to give back to the community, planning to donate part of the proceeds to local charities once the investment is recovered. “It’s not just a hook; it’s a versatile solution that will revolutionize how we hang everything. I want to make a positive impact on consumers’ lives and give back to the community.” Cynthia Stammnitz’s journey with Extend-a-Hook is a testament to the transformative power of persistence, innovation, and strategic partnerships. As this innovative hook continues to gain momentum, it’s set to leave an indelible mark on the way we organize our lives. extendahook.com PHOTOGRAPHY BY CY GILBERT

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY OF
SUSAN ROGHANI AND FAMILY
In Eagle, a captivating tale unfolds—one of entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, and the seamless fusion of diverse elements. Susan Roghani, the brilliant mind behind the Camille Beckman product brand and the enchanting Chateau des Fleurs, recently shared the rich narrative of her business journey, providing insights into the challenges, inspirations, and strategies that have shaped her remarkable success.

S
usan’s journey commenced with an unexpected origin story for Camille Beckman. “We actually began with potpourri, bridal bouquets, and lace-laden picture frames,” she reveals, reflecting on the early days of the business. The transition from crafting dried floral products to creating hand cream marked a pivotal moment. “I always loved the world of fragrance and figured people would really appreciate a great, intensive hand cream for hardworking hands,” Susan says. Thus, the signature Glycerine Hand Therapy was born— a product that remains their best-seller, now available in an impressive 14 different fragrances. The roots of this empire were firmly planted in Eagle, with the factory constructed in 2000 when the town still embraced its farm community charm. Susan’s vision extended beyond product manufacturing, aiming to create a magical mini-world reminiscent of perfume manufacturing cities in the Provence region of France. The Chateau des Fleurs emerged in 2014, bringing together various offerings such as a weekly afternoon tea, an art gallery, and a Euro-Mediterranean restaurant, all nestled within the grounds. This ambitious endeavor reflects Susan’s farm upbringing, where the spirit of creating and figuring out how to make things happen independently thrived. Managing the integration of diverse elements requires a keen understanding of aesthetics and traditions. Susan draws inspiration from her British and German heritage, infusing European influences into every facet of the Chateau. “With time we plan to add some aspects of my husband’s culture as well; he is Persian,” Susan notes. This commitment to diverse cultural elements is evident in the future plan of introducing a Persian night at the restaurant, a testament to the family’s dedication to channeling their ideas into a beautiful and tangible experience.

Reflecting on the challenges faced in expanding the business into different areas, Susan acknowledges the inevitability of learning curves. “Every industry you enter has its own learning curve, and unfortunately, there is no secret key except experience,” she advises. The resilience to overcome challenges comes from hard work, dedication, and a commitment to growing through the obstacles. With a diverse array of products, events, and a restaurant under the Camille Beckman umbrella, maintaining consistent quality and brand identity is no small feat. Susan attributes this success to the power of small yet potent teams. “Each brand has a small yet powerful team.
22/52
We have consistent quality expectations and have weekly meetings to address upcoming events and customer feedback,” she explains. The crux lies in hiring the right team, nurturing them, and, most importantly, prioritizing customer satisfaction. The global reach of Camille Beckman’s products is a testament to strategic planning. Susan describes the process, stating, “We have representatives that present the products, shops come directly to us via online platforms, and we have a team member who is fully focused on finding new accounts and calling outbound.” The aim is not just to cater to upscale shops but to make luxurious quality products accessible across a spectrum of retailers, from corner drugstores to renowned castle gift shops in England and Scotland.
Managing weddings, corporate events, and Afternoon Tea requires a multifaceted approach. Susan’s philosophy is clear: “If you care about every aspect of the experience and the customer, you will keep getting better and better.” The learning process involves deep reflection on mistakes and a humble approach to meeting the varied needs of the business, customers, and the team. The choice of the French Chateau style for Chateau des Fleurs was inspired by Susan’s daughter, reflecting a desire to create a unique European experience. The decision to set the bar high was driven by the need for something truly distinct, a sentiment shared by both Susan and her daughter. The Tudor English style of the adjacent Camille Beckman factory seamlessly complements the Chateau’s French charm, creating a harmonious blend of aesthetics.
In the ever-evolving beauty and hospitality industry, staying ahead of trends is a delicate balance. Susan emphasizes the importance of intuition and industry awareness: “It’s a balance between going with your gut and also watching what is happening in the industry.” Striking the right balance between originality and alignment with customer preferences is key, requiring impeccable timing. As a successful female entrepreneur, Susan’s advice to aspiring business owners, especially women, is grounded in hard work, resilience, and the pursuit of ideas that align with personal passions. “Success is a mix of hard work, luck, and having the right idea fitting into the market at the right time,” she wisely notes. In the digital age, Susan finds solace in the support of family, advocating for collaboration and diverse viewpoints to create a harmonious and enduring business. Susan Roghani’s entrepreneurial journey unfolds as a masterclass in resilience, creativity, and the ability to transform challenges into opportunities. The legacy she is crafting with Camille Beckman and Chateau des Fleurs stands as a testament to the power of passion and innovation in the world of business. One of the unique aspects of Susan’s business journey is the unexpected foray into vineyards and wine production. The decision to purchase vineyards two decades ago was driven by a desire to develop them. However, the love for organic grape growing and winemaking took precedence. “When we opened Chateau des Fleurs, we decided to not just sell our grapes to other brands but to begin making our own label,” Susan explains. This unexpected venture demonstrates the seamless synergy between different facets of their business.

THE KANE CO. CLOTHING ODYSSEY CRAFTING CHILDHOOD WARRIORS Discover the genesis and evolution of Kane Co. Clothing through the words of its visionary founder, Nichole Jiang, as she shares the inspiration, challenges, and triumphs that have shaped this Eagle, based kids’ clothing line.

M AGAZI NE
The spark for Kane Co. ignited from Nichole’s love for neutral aesthetics. Faced with the challenge of finding high-quality and stylish clothing for her son, she had an idea. “I couldn’t find cute, highquality, neutral clothes, and husband encouraged me to start my own line. By January 2022, ideas flowed, and by March, we launched with pre-orders.” Kane Co. Clothing had begun the journey of simplifying the process for moms by offering curated, mix-and-match pieces. The brand’s name, Kane, is a tribute to Nichole’s maiden name, meaning Warrior. This not only honors her son (Kane is his middle name) but also symbolizes the strength and resilience within every young boy who wears their creations. “It’s about continuing his legacy and representing the warrior in every boy who wears our clothes.” Eagle, Idaho has played a pivotal role in Kane Co.’s journey. Nichole expressed joy in connecting with local mothers who share her passion for neutral clothing. “It’s been fun to find local mamas who have a passion for neutral clothing like me! Seeing kids in our clothing in the community is surreal and fills me with joy.” A fulfilling experience, highlighting the trust and support the brand has gained. As a mother herself, Nichole’s designs focus on ease, comfort, and style. Understanding the daily challenges moms face, she envisioned a line that simplifies the process of dressing children while maintaining quality and style – stating that parents have enough to do. Starting Kane Co. involved finding the right manufacturers, financial challenges, and a significant amount of self- driven work. Nichole and her husband initially funded the brand themselves, and she undertook tasks ranging
25/52
from logo design to website creation. Perseverance and a strong support network helped. “I often had to remember my ‘why’ to overcome.” Relational equity became the cornerstone of Kane Co.’s global success. Nichole emphasized the importance of building deep relationships with moms worldwide through social media. Trust in the brand and its representation has led to a global community of friends rather than just customers. “One recent reward was a mom who named her son Kane after our brand.” A touching story, signifying the brand’s significance beyond clothing. Kane Co. Clothing goes beyond fashion, embodying the warrior spirit. With a Christian foundation, Nichole prays over each piece, launch, and team member. The brand aims to build relationships, create memories, and offer fun fashion while leaving a lasting impact. Nichole credits balance to grace, acknowledging that some days require a focus on family, while others demand attention to the business. “I built Kane Co. to fit into our lives, not the other way around. My family will always be my priority, and I have to reprioritize when needed.” Nichole teased upcoming Spring and Summer items that promise to be staple pieces for kids’ closets, keeping the excitement alive for what Kane Co. has in store. Kane Co. Clothing is more than just a brand; it’s a testament to Nichole Jiang’s creativity, resilience, and commitment to creating a global community of warriors, one outfit at a time. Innovate Academy & Preparatory School, a beacon of educational innovation, is gearing up for its upcoming enrollment period, set to commence on February 16. We had the pleasure of speaking with the Head of Operations, Kim Schrillo, who shared exciting details about the school’s expansion and distinctive approach to education.
30/52
M AGAZI NE
Innovate Academy’s success is underscored by its accreditation by Cognia, distinguishing it in the realm of private education. The demand for enrollment is particularly high for the preschool and middle school programs, showcasing the community’s recognition of the school’s unique approach. The Headmaster of Schools & Superintendent, Dr. Geri Gillespy, is also excited about their exclusive Business Leadership program for high school students which includes field experiences and internships as a primary focus for the high school.
Established just five years ago in Eagle, Innovate Academy quickly outgrew its confines, and is now increasing its student capacity. The school is built on five fundamental pillars: mindfulness, personal responsibility, service, community, and a unique emphasis on financial literacy and life skills. One standout feature is the early introduction of financial literacy classes, starting as early as preschool. Students delve into the basics of money management, budgeting, and even venture into entrepreneurship. Kim shared anecdotes about students running their own businesses, with ventures ranging from 3D-printed bobbleheads to classroom economies. The curriculum is designed not only for academic achievement but also to foster a love for learning. Innovate Academy believes in a well-balanced approach, ensuring that students don’t merely memorize information but acquire a profound understanding of the subjects. The core components of the school include student portfolios, hands-on, project-based learning, as well as various opportunities to apply their learning in real-life application at the school.
The interview with Kim Schrillo unveiled a vibrant educational environment where students not only excel academically but also cultivate essential life skills. The school’s annual Shark Tank Project, where students present their entrepreneurial ventures to a panel of “sharks,” exemplifies the dynamic and engaging learning experiences at Innovate Academy. As Innovate Academy & Preparatory School expands, it remains dedicated to its founding principles, ensuring that education goes beyond the classroom, instilling values that shape well-rounded individuals ready to face the challenges of the future. Open enrollment begins on February 16th. The admissions process requires a tour, a shadow day, letters of recommendation and transcripts. While Innovate seeks students who show academic achievement during the admissions process, the school does not weigh their decision solely on report cards. Equally important are students who show evidence of being well rounded, hard working, and community-oriented.
Exciting news for parents with three-year-olds as Innovate Academy introduces additional half day am/pm classes. We also offer a half-day option for four-year-olds, enhancing accessibility for families. The school’s commitment to providing quality education is evident, as they plan to maintain small class sizes. Preschool three-year olds will cap at 10 students, four-year olds cap at 12 students, kindergarten at 14 students, 1st–5th at 16, and middle school 6th–8th will cap at 18 students. The specialized high school program will only be accepting 20 students total.
For information on how to begin the admissions process for Innovate Academy & Preparatory school, visit innovateacademyprep.org or call or text 208-510-0252.

AGELESS VITALITY Unlocking the benefits of Pilates after 40 with Linda Klena, owner of Maximus Pilates
Pilates, particularly when practiced using reformers, offers a multitude of benefits for individuals aged 40 years and above. As our bodies age, maintaining flexibility, strength, and overall well-being becomes increasingly important, and Pilates proves to be a holistic approach to addressing these needs. Firstly, Pilates is renowned for its ability to enhance flexibility. The controlled and deliberate movements involved in Pilates exercises, especially when performed on reformers, promote joint mobility and muscle suppleness. “This is crucial for individuals over 40, as it helps mitigate the stiffness and reduced flexibility often associated with aging”, Linda Klena emphasizes. In addition to flexibility, Pilates with reformers focuses on building core strength. A strong core is foundational for overall stability and balance, which are vital aspects of preventing falls and injuries, particularly in the elderly. The resistance provided by reformers adds an extra dimension to traditional Pilates exercises, intensifying muscle engagement and contributing to increased core strength. Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise, making it gentle on aging joints. This aspect is crucial for individuals who may experience joint discomfort or arthritis. The smooth and controlled movements of Pilates, coupled with the support of reformers, allow for a challenging workout without putting unnecessary strain on the joints. Pilates can also enhance mental well-being. The mind-body connection emphasized in Pilates practice promotes mindfulness and stress reduction. “This is especially beneficial for individuals in their 40s and beyond who may be dealing with the pressures of work, family, and other life challenges. I’ve seen it transform lives”, says Linda.

In conclusion, practicing Pilates with reformers provides a comprehensive approach to fitness and well-being. From improving flexibility and building core strength to being gentle on joints and promoting mental well-being, Pilates emerges as a valuable tool for aging gracefully and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Can you share your perspective on the role of mentorship in academic success?

How do you define the difference between tutoring and mentoring, especially in an academic context?

After weathering the storm of 36 restaurant openings during the 2008 recession with his concessions business, Slater evolved his success into the renowned Slater’s 50/50 chain of Burger, Bacon & Beer restaurants, ultimately sold in 2017. The genesis of Spitfire Tacos occurred in 2019, just before the pandemic, as Slater ventured into the quick-service realm in San Diego. Surviving the pandemic’s challenges, Slater and his partner Todd embarked on the decision to relocate the brand to Idaho, re-imagining the concept to birth Spitfire Tacos + Tequila. Focused Expansion + Culinary Creativity
When asked about expanding the brand portfolio, Slater emphasizes a current emphasis on Spitfire and Earlybird, redirecting focus towards these ventures. Spitfire Tacos & Tequila stands out with its bold and bright flavor combinations, offering a unique and approachable menu, setting it apart in the Mexican-themed restaurant landscape. The addition of Earlybird, specializing in breakfast burritos, complements the overall culinary experience, promising a seven-day breakfast operation and exciting weekend brunches.
Inspiration + Innovation in Every Bite
Menu development at Spitfire and Earlybird draws inspiration globally. From Korean BBQ Pork Belly tacos to Nashville Hot Chicken, the inventive use of sauces adds dimension to traditional favorites. Earlybird, however, leans into classic American breakfasts, wrapping them into one-pound pouches of morning delight. Managing diverse brands within Apex Brand Collection presents challenges, but for Slater, it’s a constant journey of creativity. He revels in the fun of maintaining menu consistency across the brands. Eagle, ID: A Perfect Culinary Nest
Choosing Eagle, for the newest location wasn’t arbitrary. Slater’s partner, Todd Ketlinski, a Boise native, envisioned bringing Spitfire’s elevated menu and tequila bar to Eagle. Acquiring Doug’s Burger Den laid the foundation for this culinary expansion. Consumer-Centric Success: A Palate for the People
Staying attuned to food trends and customer preferences is intuitive for Slater. As a consumer himself, he relies on a common palate, understanding what appeals to the general public while infusing each dish with a touch of uniqueness.

A Tapestry of Brands: Cohesion with Individuality
Maintaining a unique identity for each brand while under the Apex Brand Collection umbrella is a delicate dance. Slater’s approach involves constant creativity, ensuring each brand retains its distinctive charm while contributing to the collective allure. Triumphs Amidst Challenges: A Covid Chronicle
Reflecting on notable successes, Slater recounts the challenges of navigating the COVID era. A testament to community spirit, he and his wife raised over $70,000 in the initial two months, matching the amount, and delivering Spitfire’s culinary delights to frontline hospital workers–an uplifting tale in the face of adversity.

CAPTURING VISIONS THE ARTISTRY OF IN BOISE VALLEY
In the enchanting world of photography, where every click tells a story, Cy Gilbert stands as a maestro, weaving tales of space and ambiance through his lens. Specializing in real estate, business portraiture and food photography, Cy’s work has earned accolades for its distinctive style and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Cy’s photographic style utilizes an instinctive understanding of lighting techniques. For real estate and architecture, he demonstrates a light and clean aesthetic. Yet, when venturing into the realm of restaurants, he skillfully adapts, capturing the rich tones, high contrast, and the interplay of wood and metal that defines contemporary trends.
“The combination of my Canon DSLR and specialized lenses creates a phenomenal duo, synergy” replies Gilbert. This allows him to manipulate flooring-to-ceiling views, providing a perfect field of view without distorting foreground objects. The result is a series of images that breathe life into spaces, maintaining a natural sense of scale and an almost film-like texture.

Consistency is the backbone of Cy’s philosophy. From the depth of field to color rendition, his work exudes an obsessive accuracy that transcends challenges posed by diverse lighting conditions. His images, meticulously framed, offer viewers an edge-to-edge “peace of mind,” described as an almost magical and serene experience. Cy’s artistry extends beyond technical prowess. His ability to intuitively understand and recreate the client’s vision is a testament to his dedication. Whether it’s a light and airy luxury home or a colorful and edgy restaurant, he expertly translates visions into 2D masterpieces, emphasizing the importance of lighting, angle, and depth of field in conveying a unique vibe. In a world where visual trends evolve rapidly, Cy remains at the forefront. He attributes his active engagement to technology partnerships that supply him with cutting-edge techniques and software solutions for editing. “Complacency will render oneself irrelevant in today’s highly competitive marketplace,” said Gilbert. The challenge of capturing the true character of his client’s faces with tasteful editing and retouching also defines Cy’s photographic style; while simple in nature, he strives for a very smooth lighting style that shows off the best attributes of the face by using a flat “beauty” light and the clever use of shadows for women and men, respectively. His actual lighting setup is very unique. Post-processing, a critical aspect of Cy’s workflow, is an art form in itself. Employing Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, two third-party extensions, and a patented digital processing tool from England, he achieves a polished look without sacrificing authenticity. It’s a technique finely attuned to grace the pages of prestigious publications like Eagle Magazine, Architectural Digest, Food and Wine, and Dwell. In Cy’s world, a picture is not just worth a thousand words; it’s a powerful narrative that demands attention. With an unwavering commitment to accurate color representation, tasteful retouching, and an infusion of energy, Cy Gilbert’s images speak with honor, integrity, and an artistic vibrancy that captivates anyone fortunate enough to pause and take them in. SURVIVING THE TEXTPOCALYPSE What does it mean to be human in the age of artificial intelligence?
Imagine a world where every story, every song, every piece of writing is algorithmically generated. It would be a world devoid of the human touch, the spark of imagination, and the richness of diversity. While AI and large language models can generate text that is technically proficient, they lack the capacity to truly understand the intricacies of human emotions. I didn’t write that first paragraph. AI did. Welcome to our brave new world. I’m assuming that you’ve heard about ChatGPT and other large language models. The students in my college English classrooms certainly have. What does the rise of artificial intelligence mean for jobs? For creativity? For humanity? How will we survive as we face what may turn out to be one of the greatest technological changes since the Industrial Revolution?

While this isn’t the first time a technological change has rocked our worlds, this time, it feels different. With little warning, large language models have been unleashed on the world, with all the optimism previous technological revolutions. What’s the worst that could happen? For the past year, I’ve used ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence tools daily. I’ve asked it to design yoga routines, plan meals, create lesson plans, write drafts of emails and recommendation letters, and even compose a collaborative rhyming poem. It’s a simultaneously strange and delightful experience, chatting with this bot. When it lies (with great confidence), it always apologizes. How many humans can do that? And yet, every time I use ChatGPT or any other generative AI program, I am mindful of the problems intrinsic to a training set based on 30 years of Internet toxicity—gender and racial bias, for starters. Then there’s climate change. The energy required to run these large language models is predicted to reach 8-21% of the world’s total energy supply by 2030, in a climate that is already warming far too fast. And of course, let’s not forget the general existential threat to humanity. How forward thinking of the tech bros who unleashed this on us to sign a letter calling for regulation and warning about the potential “risk of extinction.” But AI is just one of many existential threats facing humanity. Matthew Kirschenbaum, an English and digital studies professor, predicts a far more mundane, and I think, more likely future with AI: The textpocalypse, a grim future where we are all so inundated with AI-generated text that words lose their meaning. He writes, “What if, in the end, we are done in not by intercontinental ballistic missiles or climate change, not by microscopic pathogens or a mountain-size meteor, but by a tsunami of text?” On the other hand, AI researcher Kartik Chandra is more hopeful about human creativity in a world of generative AI. She writes, “The question to ask about writing is not Will AI make it worthless? but rather What could possibly be more important? Never have the skills of independent, critical thought and expression been more vital than in the AI era.” In the end, I’m left—and I’m leaving you—with more questions than answers. Will AI take our jobs? Destroy the economy? Turn us all into batteries ala the 1990 movie The Matrix? Personally, I agree with Kartik—and with ChatGPT’s assessment at the beginning of this essay: Artificial intelligence cannot and should not replace us. I hope that AI marks the beginning of a new golden age for humanity.
