TALKING POINTS By Pat Minkiewicz
“The autumn leaves drift by my window, the autumn leaves of red and gold… and I miss you most of all, my darling, when autumn leaves start to fall.” Those words and sentiment come from an original 1945 French song of many verses called “Les Feuilles Mortes” (The Dead Leaves) with music by Hungarian-French composer Joseph Kosma and lyrics by French poet Jacques Prevert. Ten years later in 1955, American pianist, Roger Williams, recorded his instrumental-only version of the song’s music which became a #1 Hit in America, selling more than 2 million recordings. Born in Autumn of October 1924, Williams died in Autumn of October 2011, which aptly qualified him an appropriate musician to record the hit. Admirers of that recording did not hear the English translation of the song’s lyrics until live television variety shows quickly began featuring popular entertainers to sing them. The Treasure Valley’s beautiful autumnal colors of tree leaves in the northern hemisphere usually will fade away by Thanksgiving. A very different fall schedule exists in the southern hemisphere, as nations such as Australia and New Zealand wait for their autumn season to begin the middle of March, then they enjoy autumn leaves through May during the harvest season. Eagle in November means some serious leaf raking begins. Check out the city’s Leaf Bag Bundle Exchange that issues free heavy paper bags for leaves, while supplies last, in conjunction with a canned food drive. Contact City Hall for details cityofeagle.org Filled bags can be picked up curbside on regular trash pickup days. Large plastic bags to hold leaves for disposal are discouraged. West Ada School District schools will close one week for Thanksgiving holiday break November 19-23. School days will resume on Monday, November 26. Not to be missed in December is the annual gala Eagle Country Christmas & Tree Lighting and singing of carols held at Heritage Park downtown on Saturday December 8th at 1:00pm - 6:00pm. Bundle up. ¢

COCKTAIL HOUR
Must-Try Cockt ails of t he Season By Chelsea Chambers
Photographs by Kimberlee Miller
The year is winding down and you have been working hard. The New Year is right around the corner and now it’s time to relax for the holidays…yes, imagine that—actually relaxing for the holidays! But truly, let’s all vow to have a happy, healthy, and most of all, relaxed holiday season. Don’t worry—you’ll get to everyone on your shopping list, the honey ham will turn out delicious, and everything will fall into place before the New Year. In order for all of this to happen, we have to ensure that we are taking time for ourselves. It’s important that we find ways to combat the stress and negativity, and sometimes the perfect remedy for that is a delicious, hand-crafted cocktail. So, grab a friend or meet up with family and celebrate what the holiday season is truly about: spending time with loved ones.
BARDENAY Bardenay was a term used by sailors that loosely translates into the word ‘cocktail.’ And Bardenay took that and ran by creating their own distillery. They distill, in-house, their own gin, rum, vodka, lemon vodka, and a variety of liqueurs which only adds that much more love and flavor into their cocktail list. Stop in to one of their three locations today! (Eagle off State Street, Downtown Boise, or Coeur D’Alene if you’re in the north).
15
And check out some of their delicious cocktails today, like these: Autumn Night - Bailey’s, Godiva chocolate liqueur, Frangelico, coffee, bar cream, and a cinnamon stick. Desert Rose - Chambord, Malibu coconut rum, prickly pear cactus syrup, Whaler’s vanilla rum, fresh squeezed orange juice and bar cream.

BELLA AQUILA

Or a few drinks and a full meal—just be sure to designate a driver, because you’ll definitely want to try several of their tasty cocktails. They are open for brunch (on Sundays), lunch, and dinner and offer an exceptional lineup of delicious Italian fine dining. Be sure to try one of their amazing cocktails, such as: Cran-Rita – Camarena Silver Tequila, fresh cranberry reduction, cranberry juice, fresh-made house lime sour, garnished with a candied and salted pecan rim. The Apple of My Eye – Jim Beam Vanilla Bourbon, Courvoisier Cognac, spiced apple cider, sparkling wine float, garnished with a cinnamon spiced apple cider rim.

HOLIDAY PLANTS REARRANGED HOLIDAY FOLIAGE AND THE PEOPLE WHO SHARE IT
By Kayli Corbin

A beautiful floral arrangement is an ever-present inclusion for all the most monumental times in someone’s life. When a family member is lost, we often send flowers to give someone who’s hurting something beautiful to look at. When a family gets bigger, whether it’s a birth or a marriage, you are sure to send a bright and beautiful representation of your excitement. Any event in our lives is made better with flowers. MADELINE GEORGE GARDEN DESIGN NURSERY The easiest way to have a beautiful home and garden is to introduce plants! Whether you’re focusing on a low maintenance, highly aesthetic garden or looking for the perfect green-inspired gift for any of your friends or relatives, Madeline George has just what you need. Madeline George Garden Design Nursery (MG) started as a design-driven landscape and garden design company back in 2002 and expanded to open the boutique retail garden center in 2012 with an emphasis on carrying plants that thrive in our climate and provide seasonal interest. Their focus is to help people create stylish and sustainable outdoor living environments.

Kecia Carlson, the Principal Designer and General Manager at MG, shares, “We are open year-round for all your gardening interests! We are very design-driven, so we like to keep abreast of trends and bring those new plants, ideas, products, and innovations to our customers. Our mission is our passion and that’s helping people create stylish and sustainable environments – outside or in! We love the creative process and engaging with people who like that too! Our palette is plants, people, and the environment.” During this holiday season, MG is hoping to get everyone together. Their classes and workshops offer a variety of topics – planting winter containers, creating wreaths, crafting terrariums and even decorating your home with garden cuttings. If making your own arrangements isn’t your cup of tea, you can choose from a festive assortment of wreaths, boughs, garlands, holiday flowering plants, and nature-inspired green gifts that are ready to give. Come explore and express your vision at Madeline George. HOPE BLOOMS FLOWERS AND THINGS The girls at Hope Blooms Flowers and Things are here to help you navigate any of life’s events. IN REMEMBRANCE A TRIBUTE TO OUR VETERANS By Kayli Corbin
O
Photograph by Kimberlee Miller
n the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, The Great War (World War I) entered an armistice. This meant that the Allied Nations and Germany agreed on a temporary cessation of hostilities. Seven months later, the Treaty of Versailles was signed and an official end to the war was obtained. In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…” In 1954, after the end of World War II, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day to include the veterans, victims, and families of another world war. This act helped focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. The stories of the military men and women who have served this country span all walks of life. There are over 16 million living veterans that have served in at least one war. Today we will share the stories of four local veterans. Each veteran will be referenced by initial to allow for solidarity for each and every veteran in our communities, the United States, and the world as a whole. Edgewood Senior Living is a community offering customized services to exactly fit senior’s needs. They focus on independent living for as long as possible and craft amazing relationships between neighbors and staff to make each of their facilities like home. Edgewood Senior Living was kind enough to facilitate the sharing of some of their community member’s stories. Each person shares a different perspective of what service means. They were in different areas, helping with a variety of integral tasks, but each story shares an underlying theme of respect, sacrifice, and determination to serve our great country. M.P. served from 1943-1947 during World War II. She joined the
28
Cadet Corps to become a nurse at 17 years of age. She learned military tactics and nursing on Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah. She attended classes in the morning and then worked in hospitals in the afternoons. Twelve-hour days afforded her only one evening a week to go into town or attend a dance. She shared that serving her country meant “doing everything (she could) to protect the county, even if it meant losing (her) life.” Her and her family observe Veterans Day by putting up flags and going to visit graves of those lost in the line of duty. V.G. served during the Korean war from 1951-1953 as a cook. He fed the incoming enlisted as they were preparing to go overseas to fight. Serving his country meant “getting the men ready to saves lives in the field by feeding them,” a necessary service to our country. He shared that everyone should “do your best at everything you try.” So many people in a variety of roles were necessary to the success of the United States Military, and each of them made an integral sacrifice for our country’s wellbeing. G.C. served as a Clerk in the Airforce from 1951-1953. During the Korean war he dealt with everything from ordering supplies to writing letters. His pride in serving his country means everything to him. He shared that he “honorably served (his) country and (his) job.” D.T. also served in the Korean war as a Gunnery Officer on the Destroyer Ship, USS Orleck. He went to college and then entered Officer Cadet School where he became an Officer. He oversaw the ships, guns, and the wellbeing of those under his command. He shared “it’s important to me to take care of things.” Which is apparent in his selfless service. He wants everyone to remember the people who have fought and died for this country. Each year on Veterans Day, his family puts a flag in their front yard to remember all the people who have served the greater good. In a time where our country seems more divided than ever, it’s important to reflect on the things that bring us together. It’s safe to say that each of us share a deeply rooted respect for those willing to make the greatest sacrifice. As a community, it is our responsibility to reciprocate the service our Military men and women were so willing to provide.
A little bit of research shows us the true need for veteran care and assistance programs. An article called Veterans Day Facts from history.com shares some staggering details. “The VA (Veterans Assistance) health care system had only 54 hospitals in 1930. Since then, it has expanded to include 171 medical centers; more than 350 outpatient, community, and outreach clinics; 126 nursing home and care units; and 35 live-in care facilities for injured or disabled vets.” Veterans Day is a time of remembrance—remembrance of service, sacrifice, those who were lost, those who came home broken, and the families of all our military members who have so bravely served our country. 7 million veterans served during the Vietnam War. More than 5.5 million veterans served during the Persian Gulf War. Two million veterans served during the Korean War. And countless more have served during peacetime. I challenge you to reflect and remember this Veterans Day. Be thankful for the freedom and liberty we have been granted. Be grateful for the country we live in. And most importantly, share your respect and gratitude with a veteran you know.
D.T. ALSO SERVED IN THE KOREAN WAR AS A GUNNERY OFFICER ON THE DESTROYER SHIP, USS ORLECK.

SALON COUTURE Striving to be the Best at Bringing out the Best in you By Haley Grugel
Photographs by Kimberlee Miller
Salon Couture came to life in 2009 and will be celebrating its ten year anniversary this April. Located on Riverside Drive in Eagle, the salon offers a wide variety of hair services including women and men’s haircuts and styles, colors of all kinds, and fiberceutic treatments. Along with their hair services, they also offer nail care—including manicures, pedicures, and acrylics. With ten years in business the salon has definitely made its mark in the Treasure Valley. When asked what her company motto was, Nicole Stoppello, the owner of Salon Couture said, “Salon Coutures’ artistic team

strives to be the very best to bring out the best in you.” Nicole has been in the beauty industry for over 22 years, getting her start right here in the Treasury Valley at the Meridian School of Beauty in 1994. While she herself has been in the industry for quite some time, she explained that she was pretty much raised in the profession. Nicole’s father owned and managed different beauty supply stores throughout her upbringing and her mother was a stylist and salon owner for over 50 years. With such deep roots in the beauty industry it was no surprise that Nicole followed in the footsteps of her family. Salon Couture was always a dream of Nicole’s and in 2008 her husband helped her achieve that dream. The salon strives to provide an all-around great experience. This starts with their well-trained stylists. Each stylist provides their expertise in order to achieve their clients’ vision. Nicole still works as a stylist herself at the salon and has a team of seven other well-trained artists. Nicole explained that when choosing a new member to join her long running salon family she, “looks for passion in their work, technical and artistic ability, education, and most importantly someone who will be a positive addition to their team.” The salon is proud to be a L’oreal Platinum salon, which as Nicole explained, means they provide the highest quality of amenities and salon products to their clients. Offering L’oreal products is what allows Salon Couture to provide some of their innovative services such as the fiberceutic hair treatment. The fiberceutic treatment is an option for people with sensitive or weak hair. This three-step process from the L’oreal Professionals series recovers your hair’s natural conditioning that may have been lost from coloring or styling with heat. Salon Couture is a true Treasure Valley born company that is more than just another hair salon. They’re an ever-evolving team striving to improve their skills, so they can achieve the results that each client is looking for. As Nicole puts it, she believes she has a dream team and “it just keeps getting better.” New clients are always welcome and can find all contact information on the salon’s website.¢ saloncoutureeagleid.com

EAGLE HIGH ALUMNI Camaraderie, Community, and Careers By Kayli Corbin Photograph by Kimberlee Miller
High school is a time where you begin to craft the adult you’ll become. You learn what’s important to you, you form meaningful relationships, you begin to process what it means to be a part of a community, and most importantly you start thinking about what your future can hold. The future of these Eagle High Alumni blossomed into an intertwined story of shared experience and a love for the community of Eagle. Danielle Allsop and Morgan Boydston are two members of the team at KTVB, dedicated to providing news to our communities. They also happen to share the title of Eagle High Alumni. Allsop and Boydston

recall their memories at Eagle High School fondly. Whether it was sports, drama, hanging out with friends, or some pranks on the weekends, these girls felt comfortable learning about who they were and what was important to them in our safe and quaint town. Boydston shared her perspective on being a part of Eagle. “I absolutely feel working for KTVB has made me even more connected to what’s happening! I have my ear to everything. An interesting aspect I didn’t anticipate: I view my community, politics, and events with a different lens now that I’m a reporter. Don’t get me wrong: I still
drive through the rural, gorgeous city and reminisce on places I used to hang out or friends’ houses that are now occupied by other families. I am very connected to this part of the Treasure Valley because I still live in Eagle, so I’m able to be a voice for many in this community and tell unique stories through sources I have built since childhood! People tend to connect with me more and open up when I tell them I grew up in Eagle – it’s pretty special.” Allsop currently heads the high school sports platform at KTVB. She shares, “I get to work with a lot of our community’s high school athletes in different capacities. That’s one of my favorite parts of my job, to see their successes. It makes me feel like a proud big sister!” Both amazingly successful business women shared a high school, a workplace, and now a platform to express words of wisdom to the current and future classes of Eagle High. Whether you’re the parent of a student, or a student yourself, I know we can all find meaning in the advice that these alumni, reporters, and community advocates share – “Be a good person. As cliché as it sounds, treat others like you would want to be treated” says Allsop. Boydston shares, “You are enough. It sounds so cliché, but you are worthy.” I think I can speak for everyone when I say that those sentiments are far from cliché. It’s clear that our community of Eagle is skilled in crafting caring, talented, and compassionate people. Remember that you can influence every story, whether it ends up on the news or not. ¢

DANIELA BRONZY Bringing a Creative Dream to Life By Ryon Morrin Photographs by Kimberlee Miller
Reilly DeVie is someone who stumbled into the world of publishing. Reilly has spent the last two decades remodeling and designing houses in Boise. He began dabbling as an artist and craftsman when clients began requesting less expensive versions of designer furniture spotted in a magazine or online. Several years ago, Reilly had been hanging flyers around downtown Boise to promote his services when he met Daniela Bronzy. After a brief conversation, she asked if his list of skills included welding. With her adopted home and love of Idaho and puns, Ms. Bronzy had come up with a new version of a garden hoe, one she called The Ida-Hoe. She would later show Reilly her designs for the hoe with the unique head design as the recognizable shape of the state of Idaho. Reilly’s prototypes of the Ida-Hoe more

than pleased Ms. Bronzy, and they partnered together to market and sell the product in McCall near her residence. Their unusual partnership evolved into a friendship with time. Reilly began helping her with tasks around her home and chores that had become more challenging for her to manage on her own. Reilly had likened her to his grandmother and appreciated the relationship they had fostered. ---------------------------------------------------About one year ago, a package was delivered to Reilly’s home. The package’s contents included three nearly-completed novels, five children’s books with illustrations and notes in various stages of completion and sketchbooks full of blueprints for various other inventions. Ms. Bronzy penned a note to Reilly stating, “I think that you could be the one who could see these through.” Unbeknownst to Reilly and all of
Ms. Bronzy’s other friends, she had been actively writing in secret for years. Despite the beauty and unexpected receipt of these gifts, Reilly came to the somber realization that Ms. Bronzy had left these to him after her passing. She entrusted the responsibility of bringing her creations to life in Reilly’s hands and he has taken it upon himself to do just that. Timing is everything, and for Reilly the timing could not have been better. He had just finished a project and was able to dedicate
his efforts towards preparing Ms. Bronzy’s works for publishing. For the past year, he has worked to refine the first of three novels: Roots, Rumors & Wrath and bring to fruition the other product and service ideas she introduces. The story itself is a thriller, focusing on the life of a Syrian refugee who struggles with adapting to a life away from home. Ms. Bronzy’s first book was self-published courtesy of Reilly, but the goal is to have the entire series picked up by a large pub-
lisher. He wants to put Ms. Bronzy’s novels and children’s books in the hands of as many readers as possible, and his dedication will undoubtedly bring her works to life. Ms. Bronzy’s writing ranges from self-illustrated children’s stories to mystery thrillers. She was not afraid to explore every corner of her own imaginative mind as a writer. Reilly is planning a yearly release schedule in order to keep Ms. Bronzy’s name in the public eye, rather than simply putting all
of her works out at once. Within three to four years, he hopes that he will be able to share the entirety of Daniela Bronzy’s collection and build a readership who appreciates the artistry of a closet creative. Her first released novel, Roots, Rumors & Wrath, is available in bookstores around town, Amazon, Kindle and Reilly’s website dedicated to everything Daniela Bronzy, danielabronzy.com. The next novel will be released in October 2019. Be sure to check out Daniela Bronzy’s iconic Ida-Hoe display at Capital Lumber (3105 W State). ¢
WOMAN OF STEEL TURNS TO BRONZE PC: Maike Munden
Irene Deely By Barb Shelley Photograph by Kimberlee Miller
Some artists would have given up when— after 25 years as the Woman of Steel, and the creation of hundreds of welded steel sculptures—she triggered an allergy to her medium. It wasn’t an allergy just to the steel, burns, fires, broken bones, and burnt corneas, it was a reaction to the entire environment. But Eagle-based artist, Irene Deely, did not give up. She closed her studio and began exploring other mediums, soon discovering a passion for bronze — using nontoxic materials. Now, her body of work can be seen in public and private exhibitions in Idaho and around the country. At least one piece is in Canada and another in the Republic of Zambia. “I couldn’t break steel, but steel broke me,” Irene recalls, her voice rich with a full timbre fitting for an artist. “Steel appealed to my intuition and large movement ten-
dencies, but now bronze is filling my need to work with my hands in three dimensions. To be able to walk around my art, touch it, enjoy the messiness of its creation and know that others too will touch it is heaven.” A pair of eagles in their nest, titled “Commitment” on the corner of Eagle Road and Highway 44, is one of her welded steel pieces. Many people have seen and even climbed on her sculpture of Abraham Lincoln sitting on a bench with his top hat in Boise’s Julia Davis Park. Some may know that she collaborated on the design and built the 2009 Special Olympics cauldron displayed at the Boise Airport when Idaho hosted 2,500 world athletes. But her best known, most widely traveled piece was born out of grief and heartache. After the horrific events of 9/11, she and husband Bob were moved to find a way

to inspire and comfort. They self-commissioned “Liberty Let’s Roll!” — an eightfoot, heroic scaled sculpture mounted on a trailer, which traveled uncovered 20,000 miles on three cross country tours. It is the Statue of Liberty side kicking in a Bruce Lee style, Kungfu stance. The title, “Let’s Roll!” refers to passengers on United Flight 93 who rushed the hijackers and diverted the plane into a field in Pennsylvania saving many lives while losing their own. The Gowen Field Air National Guard Base top officer at the time presented Irene with the prestigious Seven Seals Award for her efforts to inspire and encourage the public and the military. What happened to “Liberty Let’s Roll!”? Eagle Magazine has the scoop. Irene realized that the message and intention had become distorted, so the sculpture was melted and remade into a new piece of art. What is Irene’s next artistic pursuit? She envisions a noisy, mixed media, full-sized, wild installation so big that people can enter the piece and experience it. The temporary piece will someday be created on her 10-acre property in Eagle. ¢ To view more of her art, find her on Facebook. REMBRANDTS THREE TREES COMMUNITY INITIATIVE Eagle Restaurants Give Back to the Community By Chelsea Chambers
Photographs by Kimberlee Miller
REMBRANDTS AND CACI WOOD-FIRED SICILIAN GRILL Rembrandts has been a place of gathering in Eagle for over a decade. In the last two years, under the new ownership of long-time friends, Dale Willman and CJ Cacioppo, Rembrandts has built upon the foundation that the previous owners established—a place where everyone can get together and have an incredible dining experience. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to bring the family or host a business meeting, Rembrandts has the menu and ambiance for all occasions. The new ownership continues the original vision—a sense of belonging within the community. “And we probably put another 100 years into the building,” jokes CJ, when talking about the six-month restoration process. A few things are changing and it’s definitely something that we can get behind. Rembrandts is transitioning into an “AM eatery,” focusing on breakfast, brunch, and lunch. The dinner and outstanding wine service is moving toward more special events. So, their evening hours might change up a bit in the coming months. Why the change, you ask? ONE WORD: CACI. Dale and CJ have partnered with other investors that are all part of the Treasure Valley community to create a fresh new twist on Italian. Pronounced KAW-CHI, CACi is a Sicilian-inspired, wood-fired grill. But CACi isn’t your traditional Italian joint—they team has dedicated the menu to a cross-cultural flavor experience! Their food is truly a volcanic explosion of flavor from the entire Mediterranean region, reflecting the cross-cultural influence of this volcanic island. CACi isn’t the heavy Italian food that nearly leaves you comatose, but rather, it is a blend of fresh vegetables, seafood (and other meats!), and sauces that are typical to the southern and specifically Sicilian region of Italy. All pasta and dough, and all of the sauces, are prepared in-house for freshness and the ability to use only the best ingredients. Opening mid-December on Edgewood Road, CACi Wood-Fired Sicilian Grill will be a family-friendly dining experience with an eclectic mix of beer and wine, and a spacious and open-kitchen floor plan featuring the wood-fired grill and the wood-fired pizza oven. The team at Rembrandts wants to continue the initial purpose of Rembrandts: to establish a place of gathering and to give back to the community. This holiday season, Rembrandts is teaming up with Porterhouse and Food Services of America to give to families in need. BUT THEY NEED YOUR HELP! The Rembrandts Three Trees Community Initiative is intended to support families in need and support selected local not for profits throughout the year. Three Trees is one of the few landscapes painted by the famous painter, Rembrandt, and was selected as a theme for this initiative as these three trees stand firmly rooted in support of one another—the business, along with its employees, giving to the community. Come see a copy of the painting at either Rembrandts or CACi! Do you know of a family in need? Please submit your Community Outreach Family Nominations to threetrees@rembrandtseagle.com. And don’t worry, these will remain anonymous to the families. SPECIALIZED CARE WITH A HOLISTIC APPROACH Eagle Welcomes Dr. James Chappell and the Chappell Integrative Wellness Center By Janelle Stear Photographs by Kimberlee Miller
The room is calm, aesthetic. The soothing sounds of a tabletop fountain and dimmed lighting make you feel at ease. A doctor approaches with a wise and welcoming smile. He escorts you to his office, where he uses 21st century, traditional, and aboriginal medicine. He has you speak into a specialized computer for twenty seconds, and then from a headset releases a series of vibrations that begin to retrain your brain for better emotional health. Then the headset scans your body for a full physical exam. Think Star Trek: Dr. McCoy’s medical tricorder, as he simply swipes his wand over your forehead. Dr. Chappell can help you decide on a correction plan that will bring you back
to a balanced state of wellness. His machine, the AO Scanner, is the only one in our state; scientists in Russia, Germany and China took ten years developing it. WELLNESS = BALANCE AND PREVENTION
As a medical intuit (someone who perceives the state of internal health), clinical nutritionist, traditional naturopath, chiropractic physician (retired), and best-selling author: Dr. Chappell uses common sense, insight, and research to determine a solution to a problem. Dr. Chappell describes, “The key to health is education and taking effective action.” As stated on his website: Dr. Chappell “is a master health detective. He does NOT focus on disease. To the contrary, he states, ‘Where health resides there is no room for illness.’ His focus is on wellness, optimum health and longevity and how to achieve it.” He has learned, in his forty-seven years working with patients, that the least amount of interference will give the maximum result. Dr. Chappell’s wife, Nicole Shoong, a journalist and reporter, wrote in the forward to his 2016 book that she had witnessed him cure a child with brain cancer; “His knowledge of the human body went deep into the entire electrical/chemical environment. His photographic memory and medical intuition was remarkable.” A PROMISING, EXCITING MOVE FOR THE DOCTOR
Dr. Chappell has consulted all over the world, including actors in the Hollywood studio lots; he has been a radio and TV host, and has written a vast array of books. The couple moved to Eagle last January, after his sister, Dee, persuaded them to move to the area. “After forty years, I told him he should live closer to his family,” says Dee. Now in Eagle, the couple love being able to share their experiences and unique medical approach with our community. That is why they offer a free weekly workshop every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., in which Dr. Chappell enlightens visitors with his expansive knowledge. As Dr. Chappell states, “Doctor literally means to teach or minister to. We must know how the body works and what to do when it doesn’t.” ¢ 593 E. HALL ACADEMY Teens find their life passion By Barb Shelley Photographs by Kimberlee Miller
What if you could create a high school where: the atmosphere was peaceful and happy, 100 percent of the students graduate, and the students look forward to going? What if creativity flourished and even students who never thought they were creative found their passion? Sound too good to be true? Thanks to Idaho’s enlightened laws about educating children, there is such a school, a privately-owned art school. It is in the

heart of Treasure Valley — the Hall Institute for the Arts — located at 1167 E Iron Eagle Drive in Eagle. With a voice that seems trained to do professional voiceovers or radio, Laurie Hall, co-founder and administrator describes her brainchild. “Education is a process, not a product. Hall Academy is a place where kids get to figure out who they are, own their progress and learn how to be full, successful humans who express their artistic and academic passions.” Walk through the hallways on any school day, you will encounter, well before school starts, students in the kitchen preparing breakfast, reconnecting and laughing. When class starts at 8 (there are no jarring bells ringing in this building) you will see students, heads down, focused on their academics that Laurie calls the “hard brain work.” But when afternoon comes, the atmosphere changes and the artistic curriculum blooms. You might hear the film class in action or the animation students making squishing and popping sounds for recordings. Shakespeare soliloquies boom from the theatre, and music echoes down the halls. “The afternoons are not quiet,” smiles Laurie who, with her co-founder, husband Donald Hall, designed the curriculum and schedule to best suit creative, sensitive kids who they found, have a unique learning style. They learned about the challenges of educating quiet, artsy children firsthand. Laurie is a teacher and both of them experienced their own three children who were not well-served in the traditional classroom. “Our curriculum was designed through the eyes of the students,” says Laurie. The instructors switch out so that students are not with the same teacher through the year. They get to learn from a variety of teachers and perspectives. All of the arts teachers are working professionals. Some have performed or presented their work internationally. The academy has been open for five years and began welcoming international students four years ago. As a child, Donald lived all around the world and U.S. Knowing how important these experiences were to his understanding, he and Laurie decided to bring the world to the kids. Often the students become lifelong friends and even spend vacations abroad with their global classmates. ¢ hallacademy.org

WARMING UP WITH WHISKEY Seasonal Cocktails and Comfort Food for the Senses By Brittney Byrne Photographs by Kimberlee Miller

CUISINE
The weather is cooling down and as fall turns into winter, mojitos and margaritas are replaced with the warmth of whiskey paired with seasonal spices and complimentary fruits and citruses. Your summer salads are being traded in for hearty comfort food. At Grit, right here in Eagle, the options for both comforting food and drink awaken your senses with their attention to detail and unique palette. One of the gems that sets Grit apart is their signature whiskeys. Working hand-in-hand with local distillery, 8 Feathers, they have crafted two delicious and unique whiskey flavors that can be found in their on-menu cocktails along with seasonal favorites. The Daywalker is cured in an uncharred barrel, aged for two years, then an additional year after the infusion of orange and vanilla. The second whiskey is aged in a charred barrel and after two years, an additional nine-month age with a specialty blend of spices and peaches to create their Spiced Peach Whiskey. Along with their own creations, they keep things local with the spices and produce in as many dishes as they can. Their food is American favorites with an upscale twist that balances every note on the taste buds. Meagan Walker, one of the fantastic bartenders on staff, gave us a sneak peek into two of her seasonal creations using the Grit exclusive whiskey. With the popularity of Whiskey Sours, she has created two plays on the classic. Using the Daywalker Whiskey, with hints of orange and vanilla, she
adds in a touch of cinnamon, clove, and allspice, and a dash of maple syrup for the traditional simple syrup. She finishes off with egg whites for a frothy smooth cocktail. Her creation is call “The Sour Relative,” she says is a nod to the “grumpy uncle at Holiday parties.” Her second concoction that can be found on the seasonal menu is a Pomegranate Whiskey Sour. Her use of the seasonal fruit muddled with fresh squeezed lemon, house-made simple syrup, and once again her secret egg white go to, is a sweet and tart pair for the Spiced Peach Whiskey. She serves the cocktails shaken as to activate the citrus and give you a smooth and frothed consistency. Every good cocktail needs a dish to compliment it and they have done just that with two additions to the menu to warm
you up this season. Paul Faucher had us drooling as he divulged the ingredients in the dishes. A Faro salad with the crimson, tart, crunch of pomegranate seeds alongside brussels sprouts, bacon, and creamy butternut squash. Looking for something warm and hearty? You’ll want to try the local favorite “Grit Dip.” Piled high with smoked and shaved Kobe beef, fried onions, Grit’s exceptional pepper jam, and served alongside bacon chipotle au jus. These dishes are sure to satisfy with fresh ingredients and unexpected pairings of flavor that delight the senses. ¢

BOTH SIDES OF THE DESK: A CONVERSATION BETWEEN A CASTING DIRECTOR AND AN ACTOR One book to explain it all By Brittney Byrne
Photograph by Nyk Fry
The chemistry between Catrine McGregor and April Matson is fun, witty, and a great example of a symbiotic friendship. You can see a twinkle in their eyes as they told of each other’s talents and accomplishments. Introduced by a mutual friend, the two instantly “fell in love.” Catrine is a long-time casting director with over thirty years of experience and April is an actor who has been through the LA actor life going from audition to audition looking for the next big break. Catrine found herself drawn to the film students in college and her attention to detail in scheduling and budgeting earned her many credits as a director in the student films. She eventually earned her Master’s Degree and has held the title of Casting Director since. She said she really likes to “cast against type.” She wants actors to come in and show her what they can do with the material, not try and be the character they think they are looking for. One example she gave was casting a librarian, she said “you may think a librarian is a woman with a tight bun and wire rimmed glasses, but I like to cast the Rastafarian dude, because why can’t he be the librarian?” Catrine is a breath of fresh air in the casting world and is hired by many networks and companies to help achieve the perfect cast for their projects. This is where April comes into the picture. She started acting in high school and then found herself in LA, as a vet tech, waiting tables and auditioning. She landed her first big break on a sitcom called Quintuplets and then on the fan favorite Kyle XY. Once that show ended, April returned to Boise to be with family. She met her husband during a stand-up comedy competition where he took first place and she took second, a fact she said he never lets her forget. The two were reunited when April opened her acting studio, Platform, and her husband was her first student. April continues to teach at her acting studio, sharing her gift with others and balancing that with acting herself.

O N T H E TO W N
Catrine and April found themselves constantly talking about the business and all their experiences from two different perspectives. They said people would over hear them talking all the time and say, “you should write a book!” and that’s just what they did. They scheduled chunks of time and would meet up, in their pajamas, drinking coffee, and just talk. Two sides of the acting world, unveiled and debunked. Once the conversations had been transcribed, their book Both Sides of the Desk: A Conversation Between a Casting Director and An Actor was born. The eBook is available now and hard copies will be available soon. April’s mother compared the book to a “hearty stew.” It will draw you in and teach you things from both sides. It would be a fantastic read for aspiring actors or anyone looking for a page turner. With Catrine and April behind the words, this book is pure gold. ¢ Bothsidesofthedesk.net

DRYLAND DOGS Too Mush Cuteness By Elle Parker Photographs by Kimberlee Miller
Four paws on the ground. Harness secured. Mind prepared. This can only mean one thing: it’s time to mush. At the mention of “dog sledding,” most people think of Alaska, huskies, and mounds of snow. In reality, it can take place in all four seasons in any city, including Meridian, and any breed of dog is welcome to participate. Mia Gussie started up Dryland Dogs in January 2018, hoping to popularize mushing in Idaho. For most dogs, it’s something they truly enjoy; even beyond this, there are many reasons to mush... there is likely one that hits home with every

canine owner. For Mia and her dog Zeus, mushing was only the beginning of something much greater. All breeds, ranging from terriers to labs to pit bulls, are able to mush and can learn how with a bit of training. The main question many ask is how it’s possible to mush in all four seasons, especially in Idaho. Dryland Dogs’ mushing is considered “urban”all the training is done in neighborhoods, parks, and on trails. This sport has recently entered the game and is rapidly becoming more and more popular. The musher can ride on a scooter, cart, or bike instead of a sled—no snow needed! It’s crucial to keep sledding dogs in shape year-round and fresh on the commands (i.e. “easy,” “whoa,” etc.) so that they’ll be ready to go when the official season rolls around in winter. Even if a dog doesn’t participate in wintertime mushing, this training can not only help dogs stay active and challenge
themselves mentally, but it is also a marketing opportunity for pups looking to get adopted. Through a program called “Running to the Rescue,” this business offers 30 free minutes of mushing for shelter/rescue dogs. This is truly a testimony to how much Mia Gussie cares for canines. Dryland Dogs also provides many free services such as gear demos, basic scooter training, and harness fitting. Mushing is also beneficial for dog owners; it allows for a bonding experience that is simply impossible to find elsewhere. Whether the best method of mushing for you is rollerblading with your pet or purchasing a cross-scooter, mushing creates an unparalleled connection. To Mia, the small steps matter. She explained how simply “watching people on their first ride is absolutely an amazing success” to her, and how witnessing a first ride is always “such a positive experience.” Dryland Dogs has seen many four-legged friends completely transformed through mushing. Of these dogs are Great Danes Frankie, Flo, and Fern. Through their training, these pups and their owner, Lyndsey Gill, have found such joy together in mushing: “I have never loved my dog(s) more than after we started scootering,” she previously told Gussie. Dryland Dogs also carries a wide array of mushing gear. Whether you need scooters, harnesses, or running lines, they have you covered. So, the next time you’re cruising around a park or driving around Meridian, keep an eye out for Flo, Frankie, Fern and their furry friends. ¢ Drylanddogs.com 208-918-0379 Facebook: Dryland Dogs LLC
