TALKING POINTS By Pat Minkiewicz

Winter doldrums often set in when January shows up and brings to a close the traditional holiday season. The Twelve Days of Christmas end on January 6th and by then most of the festive décor has been packed away to await another holiday season. On the other hand, a New Year brings hope and optimism, which is why the first month is named January, a word based on the Latin word for “door” (ianua). January offers an opportunity for new beginnings. Doors can close, as well, so there is hope some will close on year 2018’s downers of choice. January in Idaho offers a time to slow down and cross our fingers the temperature in Eagle will get nowhere near the 1962 record low of -26 degrees. The first 3-day weekend in the New Year is the Monday January 21st national holiday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and Human Rights. Many residents choose to travel to a warm getaway at that time; heartier souls choose to brave the ski slopes. February offers some upbeat opportunities for human interaction that remind us the Idaho winter is half over, although 1985 holds the record February low in Eagle of -21 degrees. Idahoans on February 2nd will enjoy Tater Tot Day as well as national Groundhog Day, although the state of Alaska prefers Marmot Day [a coarse-haired burrowing rodent]. Super Bowl Sunday is the 3rd, and Chinese New Year of the Pig begins on the 5th. Valentine’s Day is the 14th. The 3-day weekend of February 18th honors USA Presidents such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Many locals head to ski slopes at that time and will benefit from a safer and improved access road to the nearby Bogus Basin ski area. Locally, February 26th is when we recall Ada County Commission 48 years ago approved Eagle’s application to become an incorporated city in 1971. The Eagle Historical Museum downtown offers a display commemorating that event, as well as photos of the first makeshift City Hall of one small office. Eagle has grown considerably since then, and citizens on Thursday, February 7th can hear about how City Hall is dealing with the pressure of keeping up. The annual State of the City Address by Mayor Stan Ridgeway will be presented at 4:00PM at the Chateau de Fleurs in Eagle. ¢

Your favorite a.m. eatery is now also your new favorite venue for events

By Elle Parker

Picture this: you’re all dressed up on your wedding day. Light streams in through the tall, arched windows and fills the room, which was once full of church pews. The stunning architecture of this classic structure in Downtown Eagle is the perfect intersection between rustic and eclectic, with the stone pillars complementing its recently remodeled interior. This classic restaurant is now also the most desirable, stunning, and picturesque event venue in the valley, and you’re going to want to book it the second you see it… It is hard to remember a time when Rembrandts wasn’t charming us all, as a coffee shop for 14 years, and then as a restaurant since 2016. All have watched the shift from coffee shop to restaurant and now- Rembrandts has become both a restaurant and event venue! This establishment will remain an eatery serving breakfast and lunch until 3pm, and it becomes an event venue after that and through the evening. “We think this will be a good opportunity to shift our dinner focus to our new restaurant, CACi...and let Rembrandts remain the best breakfast and lunch hotspot while becoming the best events center in the evenings,” CJ Cacioppo, co-owner of Rembrandts shared. Currently, Rembrandts is in the tail end of hosting holiday parties, but they

are planning “to focus on weddings and other events from late spring to fall.” Tara Bruner, the new events coordinator, gushed: “I feel so honored to be the events manager for such a special piece of Eagle history!” The city simply would feel incomplete without this structure dating back to the late 1800s when Eagle founders were building the foundations of the Eagle we know and love today.” The venue is truly cohesive with all four seasons, too: • In the winter, it serves as a cozy refuge from the cold, with great views of the snow outside. Picture your guests by a hot cocoa/ coffee bar, all bundled up in boots and scarves, as fairy lights adorn the walls. • In the spring, it is the perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon, and the flowers on the trees outside will be mid-bloom, giving a dreamy undertone to the entire day. • In the summer, it can be dressed perfectly with sunflowers and light colors to emulate the uplifting spirit of a toasty summer’s day. • In the fall, the wood floors will look incredible with earthy-toned decorations and autumnal accents. Rembrandts and its team encourages clients to book through them for events and catering; “We want the clients to have the best experience they can at Rembrandts.” Tara Bruner is also hopeful for a potential future bridal suite nestled upstairs, which would further the convenience that this venue provides! What’s better than having a stunning photo location, easily accessible venue with plentiful parking, and top-notch catering? All of that, plus a place to get ready. Many venues do not provide catering, which creates two separate costs. At Rembrandts,

16

it is not two separate costs, which equates to saving some serious dough. The cost to book is generally the cost of the catering,” which is one unbeatable deal.

The modern chandeliers are gorgeous and add a nice touch to the interior. The space can truly host any event: whether it’s a birthday, wedding, anniversary party, or anything else of the sort! “With an open floor plan we can really arrange the space however needed. DJs can easily set up their equipment and the outdoor patio boasts the perfect mingling area around the fire and water fountain,” Bruner imagined. Fortunately, even if the event you’re planning has a hefty guest list, Rembrandts has plenty of space for vehicles in the large overflow parking lot. There’s absolutely no reason to not choose Rembrandts for your next party! In this stunning shoot by Greenbelt’s Kimberlee Miller featuring model Gabrielle Lenhardt and staging and design by Tara Bruner of Lemon + Co, Rembrandts’ timeless and natural beauty is put on full display. Many local Boise talents came together for this shoot, and it was amazingly cohesive. “I’m thrilled with the images and love that everyone’s work complemented each other without needing words,” Kayla Brim, stylist, stated. The simple yet elegant white flowers of Wildflower Floral truly complement the white, floral cake and its leafy accents, made at Boise’s very own Oh For Heaven’s Cakes. Together, these have a very effortless and chic look alongside the lacy wedding gown from Bridal By Marie. To top it all off, the model’s hair and makeup was done by Mrs. Brim Stylist with an emphasis on the model’s natural beauty and how the environment didn’t take away from the bride. Sprout Design Wedding did a lovely job of placing minimalistic pieces that complement instead of distract from the rest of the details. There are endless reasons why Rembrandts is the best up-and-coming venue in the valley, but it’s probably best if you witness it in all its glory yourself. Once you visit you will not be able to stop thinking about this splendid place until you book an event there! ¢ For more information, visit Rembrandts at 93 S Eagle Road, check out their website www.rembrandtseagle.com, contact them at events@rembrandtseagle.com, or follow them on Instagram/Facebook @RembrandtsEagle.

In combination with the prescriptive program, Fitness Together embraces a holistic approach to fitness, recognizing the need for a focus on three key areas. Strength training, nutrition, and cardiovascular activity are emphasized as equally important and when combined, can help anyone achieve their fitness goals. Scientific research has directed the development of these highly effective programs, and the results show the true value of approaching exercise design in this manner. THE EXERCISE COACH

Scott Gerratt knows that fitness plans need to be customized for each individual based on their fitness level and strength abilities. To be successful, you need a plan designed to work for you, and at The Exercise Coach, that is exactly what every client receives. However, the approach they take is different from what you get at a typical gym. The use of cutting-edge fitness equipment along with instruction from a certified coach provide each client with effective, personalized workouts. This advanced technology provides real time digital feedback used to motivate and safely guide clients to their optimal effort each and every workout.

FITNESS TOGETHER

A year ago, Kelley and Ainzley Anderson were introduced to Fitness Together. After observing a class, they knew that they had found a program which touts a unique, thoughtfully-designed approach to exercise. As someone who has spent countless hours in big box gyms as a member and as a trainer, Kelley has witnessed the power of personal connection in fitness as well as the struggles which accompany working out while lacking the appropriate knowledge. Kelley and the Fitness Together Eagle trainers have the necessary knowledge and ability to train anybody with fitness goals, and Fitness Together enables them to provide guidance and structure which maximizes success. At the core of the program is a customized, prescriptive approach tailored just for you. Kelley realizes that fitness goals vary from person to person, and the plan behind those goals needs to be varied as well. He emphasizes how essential custom plans are for those looking to get in shape: “We aren’t going to throw an ‘out of the box plan’ at you… we’re going to show you what’s best and hold your hand through the process.” As part of this individualized approach, Kelley strives to establish relationships with his clients. Fitness Together puts you at the center, making your success the highest priority.

The Exercise Coach strength training programs are for people of all ages and fitness levels, from those out of shape to elite athletes. While it is adaptable to anybody’s current fitness level and abilities, Scott states that the program they employ is especially beneficial for individuals who are busy, sick of gyms, worried about getting hurt and those who just don’t like exercise. The guidance and instruction provided by their certified coaches can produce transformative results

THE SHRINK SHOP

When it comes to fitness, Joanne Lee Cornish is an authority on the matter with over 30 years of experience in the industry and a wealth of knowledge concerning nutrition, exercise, and body composition. A former body builder, she has pushed herself to the limit, surpassing any and all barriers in order to reach her goals. Now, Joanne has made it her mission to help people of all walks of life unleash the potential they possess, but have yet to realize. Joanne asks a simple, yet profoundly important question: “When have you ever been good at something you didn’t understand?” At the foundation of The Shrink Shop lies knowledge; reaching fitness goals is possible for everyone if they have the appropriate information to guide their journey towards a healthy lifestyle. Her passion for fitness education and the promotion of self-awareness as the core of any plan is evident in her book, “When Calories and Cardio Don’t Cut It.” Her expertise regarding metabolism, blood sugar, fat patterning, and muscle gain and loss is invaluable to anyone looking to get fit and stay there for good.

in just two 20 minute workouts per week He emphasizes that The Exercise Coach program enables individuals to maintain or build the strength necessary to do the things they enjoy, things that they may have been unable to do prior to working with a coach and receiving the knowledge and support necessary to improve one’s strength and fitness level.

Working from home, Joanne has a fully equipped gym onsite for personalized training sessions, as well as high-tech equipment for assessing your body’s composition and fitness level. As a client, you will receive an individualized plan appropriate for you and your personal goals. Nutrition and exercise are equally crucial, but she asserts that knowledge is power and is vital to success and longevity. Joanne can give you the information you need and support you throughout the journey of fitness. ¢ theshinkshop.com caloriesandcardio.com

In combination with tech-driven assessments and fitness plans, The Exercise Coach recognizes that one of the most common reasons people don’t go to the gym is a lack of time. Thankfully, the Smart 20 workout virtually eliminates this issue. Scott states that, “more is not always better” in regards to exercise. Research has found that our muscle quality matters to a far greater extent than just movement quantity. Essentially, effective targeted exercise for 20 minutes, twice a week, can have a life changing impact on health and wellness. These compact, powerful workouts eliminate the common barrier of time, while offering clients an achievable goal to aim for. One-on-one coaching works hand in hand with the unique tech tools The Exercise Coach team utilizes. Creating a relationship with every single client is essential; a personal connection fosters accountability, an essential element in the equation for success. Expect to be engaged, supported, and motivated every step of the way while working side by side with a certified coach at The Exercise Coach. 208-807-2668 scottgerratt@exercisecoach.com

FLOR DE SOL AN ONLINE BOUTIQUE GROWN IN IDAHO By Ana Lete

hen Elaine Fredriksson was a little girl, she would go hunting with her dad near Cascade, ID. At eight years old, she would play with the sunflowers and say, “Look Dad! I’m a Sunflower!” and he would respond, “You’re my flower of the sun.” Years later, after many hunting trips with her dad, giving her life to medicine, and raising four daughters, Fredriksson wanted to do something for herself, and that something is an online boutique inspired by the sunflowers: Flor De Sol. “I’m an Idaho girl, born and raised,” said Elaine Fredriksson, owner and operator of the online boutique, Flor De Sol, “From a young age, my dad taught me to hunt and fish. I would trail around him picking sunflowers and he’d say, ‘Come on flower of the sun.’ It was our thing. I translated flower of the sun into Spanish because we’re Spanish and Italian.” Founded in November 2017, Flor De Sol is an online boutique with roots nestled in Eagle, ID. Her website, theflordesol. com, offers everything from jeans, dresses, hats, tops, bottoms, gloves, jewelry, candles, and phone accessories, while her clothing and accessories range from athletic to casual to professional wear. But according to Fredriksson, her personal touch is what sets her apart from other boutiques. Every quarter, Fredriksson goes to fashion markets in Vegas, LA, and New York to handpick items for her online boutique. At these shows, designers from all over the world set up shop with their clothing and merchandise. “It’s like a massive shopping spree,” said Fredriksson. “I handpick quality clothes from all different price points from high end to $20 or less.” In addition to offering clothes online at Flor De Sol, Fredriksson also offers personal stylist consultation services and will even handpick clothes for her clients specifically upon request. “I’ve always been good at dressing people,” Fredriksson said. “I love helping people find clothes that fit their body and make them feel more comfortable and confident.” Fredriksson cites her daughters as inspiration as well. “I have four daughters, and every one of them is completely different.” Fredriksson said. “I have one daughter who loves to wear casual and active wear. One of my other daughters is a business

girl, but has an old soul and likes vintage stuff. I have my Urban daughter who likes the trendy downtown look, and I also have my youngest daughter who attends college, who loves casual but trendy clothing.” Fredriksson says that she’s been inspired by each of her daughter’s visions for who they want to be. “They are all different sizes too,” she said. “In my own home, I was the CEO of regulating my daughters’ emotions and helping them find clothes that made them feel comfortable and confident.” According to Fredriksson, her daughters have helped her realize that, “an article of clothing that works for one person, won’t work for another. They’ve all helped me see that.” When asked what she looks for when picking clothes for Flor De Sol, Fredriksson said that beyond the quality of the items, she looks for pieces that will please women and girls of all ages. According to Fredriksson, “Today, shopping is multi-generational. If you go to the Meridian Village, you see grandma, mom, and her teenage daughter all shopping together…You can buy a Flor De Sol gift card and give it to any lady, and they’ll be able to find something at my store.” But Flor De Sol doesn’t stop there. “When you get stuff from other boutiques, it comes wrapped in plastic that you tear open and throw away,” Fredriksson said. “I’ve spent a lot of time designing my brand and creating my boxes. Everything is labeled, handwritten, and wrapped pretty,” She said. On the front of the box in flowy font is her tagline, ‘Keep going, keep growing.’

24

If you look at Flor De Sol’s logo, you’ll see a sunflower girl who’s going forward, but also growing. “That’s to support and empower our women,” said Fredriksson. “More women are doing multi-tasks. They’re working, taking care of kids, cooking, and leading busy lives. They still want to be fit and young, respected and confident. I want all women included even stay at home moms. We’re working and showing our children a different, stronger, and independent path. I want to empower women, grow with women, and be there for their support.” This is also why Fredriksson decided to take her store online, as opposed to finding a physical location. “When I was working in medicine, I literally had no time to shop. I went to work in the dark and came home in the dark. I had my breaks, but we didn’t have cell phones to shop online back then,” said Fredriksson. “That’s why I wanted to have Flor De Sol be an online boutique: to work with people and their busy lives.” According to Fredriksson, aiding in the growth of women, and her local Idaho community, is a key focus for her throughout Flor De Sol. Because of this, Fredriksson gives back whenever she can. “I met with a lady who designs necklaces and said, ‘I keep losing my glasses. I need something that looks cute, that I can wear out, but that I can put my reading glasses in when I’m working so I don’t lose them.’ So she and I then collaborated and came up with this design.” Dubbed, the Elaine Necklace, Fredriksson donates 10% of each Elaine necklace to Project KidsQuest, a local non-profit that gives Foster children real world experiences designed to introduce them to different career fields and avenues. According to Fredriksson, “Project KidsQuest is about a year and a half old, and I wanted to be involved in their growth.” In addition to Project KidsQuest, Fredriksson also contributed a tree for Festival of Trees last month and donated an Elaine necklace to a giving circle. “I give back wherever I can,” she said. “Whatever I do, I do it with the intent to help my community grow through supporting kids, women, and the community to ‘keep going, keep growing’ in any way I can. ¢

ver the past few years, the nostalgia of the arcade has returned full-force. Some arcades offer the traditional 80’s arcade feel with classic games like Pinball and Ms. Pac Man, while some take the concept of the arcade and catapult it into the 21st century with virtual reality headsets. Whether you are seeking a classic arcade built on nostalgia, or a modern one with the latest technology, Eagle has both.

GRINKERS: Insert Quarter, Get Nostalgia

28

Step into Grinkers, and you’ll be transported back in time. Located in downtown Eagle off of S. Eagle Rd, the 7,500 square foot arcade has an impressive 304 arcade games on site, including fan favorites Donkey Kong, Pac Man, and Pinball. And just like the arcades of your -- or your parents’ -- youth, all games are still one quarter. While Grinkers offers a selection of high-quality food, beer, and wine, plus two big-screen televisions for viewing sporting events, Grinkers isn’t your typical small-town arcade pizza joint. Since opening in 2012, Grinkers has expanded three times and has welcomed visitors from over 17 states and parts of Canada, who travel to play the rarest games in Grinkers’ collection.

The vintage arcade is home to several rare games including a number of 1970’s blac k- and - w hite, “Bronze Age” games, one of two remaining 1977 Star Cruiser units, and a Missile Command cockpit with the lowest serial number on record, 007. Once they find the remaining parts, Grinkers is hoping to add, Computer Space, one of the first coin-operated video games, to the collection. According to staff, the idea for Grinkers came during the summer of 2011, when its owner repeatedly observed school-aged kids hanging out in the Albertsons parking lot across the street. Inspired by the arcades of his youth, and the movie, Tron, he made it his mission to give them, and their families, something fun to do. Today, Grinkers entertains people of all ages, from school-aged kids and young adults to those in their 40’s looking to relive the nostalgia of their youth. According to a member of Grinkers’ staff, “it’s really easy to tell when people visit for the first time because as they walk through the rows of games, you can hear them ooh and ahh when they see games they played as a kid.” Out of Grinkers’ 304 arcade games, staff say there are a few favorites: Donkey Kong, Centipede, Pac-Man, Pole Position, Galaga, and Pinball. However, Grinkers also has several multiplayer games, such as Rampart and Gauntlet, perfect for families or friends wanting to play against each other too. Two weeks out of the month, Grinkers hosts arcade tournaments. Players can come in any time to put a quarter into the tournament’s featured game, put up their best scores, and win gift certificates, Grinkers T-shirts, and more. While it may be challenging to earn income one quarter at a time, staff say that Grinkers is a labor of love, with five people donating

150 hours a month of their time to keep the old games running. “We have help from people all over the United States that donate their time to help maintain the games,” said Grinkers’ manager. “They come from Portland, Seattle, Texas, and even upstate New York to work on the games. It’s really become quite a community effort.” But according to staff, the happiness on people’s faces when they drop a quarter into Ms. Pac Man or QBert and return to being kids again makes it all worth the effort. Swing by Grinkers Grand Palace at 228 E Plaza Dr. in Eagle or call 208-353-9534 to plan your next game getaway!

VR1: A Virtual Reality Arcade in Eagle Opened in February 2017, VR1 is Idaho’s first Virtual Reality facility. VR1’s creator and founder, Brendan Smythe cites home-building technology as his initial inspiration for VR1, “I was a designer at Draftech when I first tried virtual reality and implemented it into the design process,” Smythe said. “After finding Virtual Reality games and inviting friends and family over to experience them, I quickly discovered that there needed to be a place that could be used for both industrial and entertainment purposes.” That idea, once sparked in Smythe’s garage back in 2016, is now reality – or virtual reality. For those who are unfamiliar with virtual reality technology, it uses a mix of sensors, cameras, and computing power to immerse you in a virtually interactive environment. Once you put on the headset, you can look around, move physically, and touch 3-dimensional objects. According to Smythe, “The information of what you’re doing in virtual reality is sent to a PC from the headsets and cameras, which then sends a video stream back to your headset, where it’s projected into two small cameras – one for each eye.” VR1 currently has six of these virtual reality systems with over 500 virtual reality game titles in its 1300 square foot test facility – and 10 staff members to help you through the virtual reality experience. “For those who haven’t tried virtual reality, the experience can be very overwhelming in some cases,” said Smythe, “On one side, you have people who have tried some virtual reality content online and are blown away that a place like this exists in their backyard,” said Smythe. “And on the other side, we get a ton of clients who have never seen a headset in their life and are shocked that technology has come this far. It really takes putting on a headset to get an idea of the potential of virtual reality.” According to Smythe, the interactive nature of VR is what distinguishes it from other arcades. “Parents and grandparents love bringing in their kids and watching them play with their siblings and friends,” he said, “It’s something that gets the kids moving, learning, and socializing, making it a well-rounded activity for any age group.” While VR1 tends to see an age range of 7-14 years old most often, VR1’s staff has helped all ages – from 5-98 years old. In addition to offering private birthday parties, corporate events, team building activities, and a new beta membership program,

VR1 has become increasingly involved in the Treasure Valley’s Autistic community as well and has seen tremendous results. According to Smythe, “This sparked a non-profit called the ‘Autism XR Research Institute’ started by Mitch Alexander, a local parent who’s seen huge success from virtual reality with his Autistic son.” In addition to VR1, institutions like Black-box VR and Boise State University have also come together to serve the area’s autistic community. But according to Smythe, “VR1 is a place where all children can learn, grow, play, and have an experience of a lifetime.” ¢ VR1 is currently located at 1225 E Winding Creek Dr. Eagle, ID, but will be relocating to a new space by the Reel Theater in Eagle this fall.

WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY Biohacking your way to better health and vitality By Chelsea Chambers Photography Kimberlee Miller

Whole Body Cryotherapy is not your traditional healing method, but it has been making waves for itself in the industry. Whole Body Cryotherapy is extremely effective at reducing inflammation, alleviating pain, and promoting your body’s natural healing process. So, what exactly is Whole Body Cryotherapy? Whole Body Cryotherapy is fast and painless, yet the results are outstanding. Simply put, your body is surrounded by extreme cold temperatures (-210+ degrees) for a short period of time (2.5-3 min) creating a reaction from your skin receptors to your brain to induce healing throughout the body. These low temperatures (below -180F) are what separates cryotherapy from cold therapy like ice baths, cold showers, and ice packs which all have their own benefits. To get the “Cryo” effect you have to hit the extremely low temps which are what triggers the body to make the necessary blood changes. Benefits can be seen for both acute injuries and chronic inflammatory conditions including

reducing arthritis pain and nerve-irritations, soothe muscle tension, preparing and recovering from stressful events, among many other benefits due to the dramatic drop in inflammation. Since most health challenges are due to inflammation it only makes sense to lower inflammation and eliminate the causes if you want to get better which is what Boise Cryotherapy specializes in. Cryotherapy is popping up everywhere, and the Treasure Valley is no exception. Dr. Jason Watson has been providing cryotherapy to the Valley for the past 8 yrs. Dr. Watson’s focus for the past 13 years in practice has been to reduce inflammation and eliminate as many of the causes as possible. The reason he decided to pursue cryotherapy is through reading research in Europe and the success they had been seeing utilizing whole body cryotherapy for the past three decades. When Dr. Watson started utilizing Cryotherapy, he was the third person in the United States to use and perform the service. Today he has two locations in the treasure valley and there are more than 800 others now in the US alone. Boise Cryotherapy provides Whole Body Cryotherapy, Oxygen Therapy, PEMF Therapy, Vibration Therapy, and Cryo T Shock services. “If you want to be the best you both in looks and how you feel with no pain, great sleep, and increased energy then try our top notch biohacking services. I have witnessed profound changes utilizing these services in not only my patients health, but I myself have been able to turn the clock back decreasing my internal age by 13 years younger than my biological age verified with telomere testing; the gold standard test for aging.” states Dr. Watson.. “Our services are for anyone who wants to feel better, look better, and function better.” Below is a glimpse into other services they provide.

{CRYO T SHOCK} Fat Loss and Cellulite Reduction

This is great for bone fractures, muscle and ligament tears, pain, and problematic joints/ areas of the body. • Live 02 (Oxygen Therapy) – Saturate the body with oxygen which is required for healing in function. This therapy has similar effect of hyperbaric oxygen, however much faster and less expensive. Excellent for both chronic conditions and athletes who want improved performance. • Cryo T Shock - An innovative and versatile anti-aging service to treat localized fat, reduce cellulite, and tone and tighten the skin. It uses state-of-the-art thermography and cryotherapy (thermal shock) to reshape the body. (Cosmetic service) • Whole Body Support- Includes testing and support to address the most common causes of inflammation. Food allergy testing, omega 3 testing, structural support, heavy metal testing, science based nutrition, and detoxing. Urie Layser, Eagle Magazine’s Sales Director, recently underwent cryotherapy. This is what he has to say about it, “I was surprised to discover the multitude of benefits that cryotherapy has on the body. I have a few injuries, including tendonitis in my arm and other joint injuries. I am now looking into a long-term plan with cryotherapy to help reduce inflammation and to expedite my recovery.” ¢ To get more information or schedule an appointment, visit boisecryotherapy.com or give their office a ring at 208-202-2896.

WEVOW A Public Promise to Live by a Higher Standard By Kayli Corbin Photography Kimberlee Miller

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EOCC) quotes that at least 25 percent of women experience sexual harassment in the workplace. And the EEOC’s study found that, in some reports, that number can reach up to 85 percent. While our headlines filled with stories of sexual misconduct by high profile businesses and celebrities, WeVow identified a commonality in those experiences – the workplace. WeVow is a membership-based product that vows to elevate how business is done by empowering organizations to build a culture of safety, trust, and zero tolerance for sexual misconduct. We had the opportunity to speak with Matt Pipkin, the Founder and CEO of WeVow, and he is actively working to decrease the staggering numbers provided by the EOCC. WHAT DOES A MEMBERSHIP TO WEVOW INCLUDE? • WeVow Member Seal - The WeVow Member Seal serves as an organization’s public promise to live by a higher standard, which can be leveraged internally and externally - on the organization’s front door, till, website, collateral, handbook, etc. Members can also leverage the seal to attract and retain talent and build customer loyalty.

40

LIVING

• Incident Reporting Platform - WeVow’s incident reporting platform makes reporting and resolving incidents of sexual misconduct simple, efficient, and effective for both the employee and HR. • Wellness Counseling - WeVow Membership provides an organization’s employees with 5 free counseling sessions per year for any incident of sexual misconduct experienced at any time in the employee’s life. • Comprehensive Resources - WeVow Membership provides the organization with information and definitions to include in employee handbooks and provides employees with information regarding how to define sexual misconduct, how to report, how to get help, and other pertinent material. What does the future hold? • Online employee training videos WeVow Membership will soon include premium quality, engaging, relevant employee training videos accessible to all employees (at no additional cost). • Non-employee access for churches, schools, nonprofits, and events - In addition to employee account access, WeVow Membership will soon offer a non-employee access to the Incident Reporting Platform, which will serve

as a solution for churches, schools, nonprofits, and events to protect their congregations, students, volunteers, attendees, and the organization on a long-term or as-needed basis. Matt shared a great summary of the current climate around this subject, “There’s a lot of anger and fear in the realm of sexual misconduct, and WeVow transcends all of it. WeVow is focused on the future, elevating how business is done in order to protect employees, organizations, and leadership. I’m really proud of how WeVow has turned out, and I think it’s really going to be a powerful tool to attract talent, keep it, and elevate how business is done.” Matt’s journey started with founding the non-profit, Speak Your Silence. For the last six years he has focused on giving a voice to those affected by sexual abuse and assault. He envisioned a way to identify and label a workplace as safe, and WeVow was born. ¢ For more information on becoming a member and cultivating healthy environments for everyone, check out WeVow’s website or Instagram and explore the role it could play in your company! I was taught and trained that all real cures are found in the cause NOT in mere treatment or management be they orthodox medical or natural healing. Let’s face it, we live in an ocean of toxins. From GMO irradiated foods, toxic pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, plane sprayed chemtrails, chlorinated & fluoridated water, polluted air to electro-magnetic cell phone, TV, radio and computer radiation, this is our world, like it or not. One key to optimum health and longevity is to stop doing those things that make us sick and start doing those things to help and keep us well. Seems kind of simple, doesn’t it? Well, it’s only simple if you think like a medical detective. After all, anything can cause everything and everything can cause anything. The key to being a good doctor is to think like Sherlock Holmes using common sense and logic with gifted intuition. Leave no stone unturned if you want to get to the cause of your health challenge. Using ancient aboriginal, traditional naturopathic and stateof-the-art 21st Century medicine, I have had over 47 years of advanced clinical experience helping people find optimum health. Simply, I know how the body works and what to do when it doesn’t. If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, and want a different second opinion, we are just a phone call away. GALLAGHER CIGAR STORE INDIANS AND BILL WALL LEATHER “For Those with Discerning Taste” By Haley Grugel

Photography Kimberlee Miller

Finding new and interesting pieces of art can be an exciting adventure, but when looking at these collectables it is a true journey back in time. Gallagher Cigar Store Indians offers a wide selection of carved statues from a family of carvers that go back three generations. Bill Wall Leather boasts distinct handmade jewelry and leathers, each its own unique piece of art. These two offerings come together by collector Kevin Cornish who has created extensive online stores for his one-of-akind items. Kevin’s collection is housed in Eagle, Idaho but showings are by appointment only. Kevin has had a passion for collecting for as long as he can remember. He started as a California surfer kid, and his entrepreneurial spirit lead him to buying and selling surfboards, so he could make a living doing what he loved. Kevin said, “The collector in me has taken me down many paths, at one time I had one of the largest tobacco pipe collections in the world—I do not smoke pipes, but as with everything I collect, it is the detail and the history of the product that draws me in.”

Gallagher Cigar Store Indians, found at gallaghercigarstoreindians.com, offers a variety of hand-carved statues each made from hand-picked Aspen logs from Colorado. When asked how Gallagher Cigar Store Indians got started Kevin said, “I’m a huge collector of anything that has a deep historical connection and I especially have a passion for Native American work. I had been collecting cigar store Indians for over 30 years when the opportunity arose for me to turn something I love into a business.” The design for the Indians goes back to the 1800’s and Kevin explained that every design and color is there for a specific reason. The shop offers ready-toship Indians as well as the opportunity for custom orders. Bill Wall Leather has been around since 1985 and every piece is individually crafted out of the finest materials. Kevin, along with his love of surf, was brought up from a young age loving motorcycles. He originally met Bill Wall, the jewelry designer, through the motorcycle industry. “The extraordinary detail of Bill’s work and my fascination with anything extremely unique

made for a great connection, we have been working together for over 10 years.” On the website billwallleather.com, you can find a large variety of different hand-crafted jewelry and accessories. If you’re looking for something custom, you can contact Kevin directly. With Kevin’s worldwide customer base, the two websites are the best way to give people the full freedom to explore everything he has to offer. Kevin explained that, at times, they do specialize in highly customizable orders which can require one-on-one attention, in which case, their Eagle location is utilized. Kevin has a true passion for his work and explained that, “you are buying art whether you have it on your hand or in your home. You are buying the story of the process and a piece of American culture.” ¢ Visit gallaghercigarstoreindians.com to view their amazing art and shop their online selection. GALLERY 601 Creating A Community with Art By Haley Grugel Photography Kimberlee Miller

Over the past few years, Boise has grown exponentially with new creative outlets popping up daily. The downtown area is filled with new restaurants, breweries, and art installations, but some places have been giving back to the Treasure Valley community before it was a destination location. Gallery 601 is a true downtown Boise staple, getting its start almost 38 years ago. While the gallery has changed overtime, one thing has remained the same, the charismatic owner Terry Begg. Terry originally came to Boise from Vancouver, Canada on a full-ride baseball scholarship to BSU. After college Terry worked at the Department of Corrections; at this time he started selling Charley Russell images. His images became so popular that his small side work led him to the opportunity to buy the gallery.

48

ARTS

The gallery was originally located at 601 West Main Street, hence the name. Since then the gallery has moved to 211 North 10th Street where it has now been for 16 years. Gallery 601 was one of the first to be involved in First Thursday. Shortly after the gallery moved Terry met Christine Otradovec, who he is now happily married to. The pair have now run the gallery together for over 15 years. Along with offering original paintings and prints, the gallery offers a small variety of jewelry, handpicked from their trips to Africa. Museum-quality framing is also available. Along with the 10th Street location there is a satellite gallery located in the grove behind the ice rink that has a small selection of pieces. Over the years, Terry has built many friendships with his artists, and he attributes at lot of his success to this. Terry explained that when artists come to town for shows,

he has a very personal approach. From the time they step off the plane, everything is on him, he even houses most of the artists at his home, often creating true friendships with the people who make the beautiful artwork he displays at the gallery. Terry said, “The personal relationships built with a lot of artists created an artist loyalty that has allowed us to offer more originals, which now account for about 80 percent of our sales.” At their home they even have a wall that artists will paint on while passing through. Previously, an east coast publishing company handled a lot of Gallery 601’s bookings, but because of personal relationships built over the last 30 years, Terry says that most of the artists now are close friends. Gallery 601 gives back to the community in many different ways. Each one of the gallery shows is a fundraising event of some

kind. The Gallery is responsible for the fundraiser that donated the planetarium at Capital High School. For the past 12 years, they have been hosting a silent auction fundraiser, called Art For The Animals, which Christine explained was very close to her heart. Originally the funds went to the Boise Zoo, but they now are given to the Idaho Humane Society. Their next fundraising event is going to be held at the Visual Arts Collective in May. After that they will have a fundraiser at a former governs property in McCall. The cause is still to be determined. Terry and Christine have over 6,600 works of art that they have collected over the years, and Gallery 601 is an ever-changing staple of downtown Boise. ¢ Visit gallery601.com to browse the available selection or learn about upcoming news and events.

A tragic accident brought her close to death, but the only death that day was that of her ego. She realized that the life she led was not synonymous to the life she intended to lead. When recalling that fateful day, Sammi reflects, “It proved to me that a person’s beliefs and thoughts do become their reality. In the silence of that ditch, with my life behind me, I finally heard my own spirit’s voice clearly… The message was clear - I am beloved and everything I need for my work and fulfillment in life is already within me. I don’t need to ‘become’ anything to be happy!” She knew then that her story was one to be shared. She was passionate about reaching people and overcoming the doubt that can so quickly shut down our dreams and ambitions. She realized that some people will reject you, but to emerge as your true self, you need to manage your ego and change your beliefs. She understands that her story can shed light on others and knows that “Right now, there are thousands of people that need you to speak your truth and share your story. They are experiencing something that you have already overcome. They feel alone and overwhelmed. You have wisdom and skills they desperately need. Or, maybe they want to do something that you have done but fear is stopping them. You can be that trail blazer for them.” Sammi has overcome the obstacles this life has thrown at her. She is a skilled and artful motivational keynote speaker, specialist in resilience, and communications coach. She shares her mantras of turning your pain into purpose, your wounds into wisdom, and your trauma into triumph. She used these lessons to be the first woman in history to represent the USA in the 2016 Paralympic Games in the open compound archery division – with less than two years of shooting experience! The Paralympics was only her 11th competition as an archer. She shares her successes in the games, “Being the first woman to represent USA as an open compound archer in the Paralympics is a hard-fought honor. The trail has been blazed. Excuses have been terminated. Ladies it’s time for you to believe in the impossible! KIDS COMMUNICATE Providing Pediatric Speech, Language and Feeding Therapy By Kayli Corbin Photography Kimberlee Miller

Kara Leach, MA, CCC- SLP, is a local Speech Language Pathologist who helps children with a wide range of speech, language, and/or feeding delays/disorders. Originally from Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Leach relocated to Boise and has loved growing her private practice here. Her clinic, Kids Communicate, opened to the public in July of 2018 and has been growing rapidly ever since! FINDING HER CALLING Mrs. Leach has always had a love for the sciences, language, and pediatrics. She spent time during college studying special education, language-arts, pre-medical studies, and journalism. After coming across a speech language pathologist working with a child who had autism, she found her niche. She was intrigued by the neurological development of children and obtained her Speech – Language Pathology Degree from Western Washington University in 2004. METHODOLOGY There are a wide variety of tools and tactics used in speech therapy. Mrs. Leach prides Once Mrs. Leach started working with Joaquin, they started to see immediate results. Joaquin is chewing his food… and there is lots of verbalizing going on these days!

herself in finding the root cause of oral motor and/or sensory disorders which can affect swallowing, feeding, or speech skills in children. In certain instances, traditional speech therapy may not provide the results families are looking for. In those instances, a more in-depth understanding of oral motor control and strength and its relationship to the sensory system can provide significant results. TalkTools is an amazing resource utilizes by Kids Communicate that integrates the sensory and motor systems in unique ways. It works muscles used for feeding and speech – which are often co-existing deficits. Mrs. Leach acknowledges the fact that ‘success’ means something unique and individual for every patient she works with. She views her role as the facilitator of that success, whether it’s six months of therapy or a much longer relationship. She shares, “It’s my job to set them up for that success, and to build on it… whether it’s teaching a child with Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Hearing Loss, or a typically developing child with an articulation disorder… I may be the guide, but it’s the children and their families steering the wheel to success.” PASSION IN THE PRACTICE This clinic has been a dream come true for Mrs. Leach. Her passion for her patients is apparent in the immense understanding she has gained, the methodology she chooses to implement, and the environment she creates for the families she works with. She is dedicated and determined to provide therapy the way she knows is right – giving every one of her patients the attention and therapy they need and deserve. She shared, “It took a giant leap of faith [to start this practice] –but my family has been amazingly supportive. I’ve also been so very fortunate to have friends and family help me and devote their time and work to create a friendly, warm atmosphere for my families to come to. It truly has been a labor of love and I am excited to watch it grow!” Kids Communicate would love to be the next building block in your child’s development. ¢ Visit Kids Communicate at 233 West State Street, Suite E, in Eagle. CHASE BINDNER Exploring the World Through Art By Haley Grugel Photography Kimberlee Miller

“Every kid is an explorer; drawing, creating, and exercising their imagination in the world. Artists are the kids who keep drawing and keep creating.” Chase Bindner has been interested in art as long as he can remember and now, at the age of 23, still finds himself creating as a means to explore the world around him. From a young age, Chase would go sit at his favorite coffee shop, Rembrandts, and draw for hours. He explained this is where he believes he truly got his practice, “Many people have talent, or the desire to do something. What separates the ones who leave those abilities dormant and the ones who become extremely successful in their craft is 10,000 hours of practice.” He described the warm ambiance and high caffeine intake as the catalyst to his artistic abilities. At the age of 14, Chase enrolled in private oil painting lessons at Venture Coy’s studio in Eagle after seeing his work in a gallery. Chase explained that he was the youngest in his class, but the lessons really opened up many doors for his creativity. As a high school sophomore, Chase told his parents he was going to attend the Arts West School for the Performing and Visual Arts. He explained, “at Arts West I trained with Jim O’Halloran, who taught me about drawing, art history, and life as we know it. He is one of the funniest people and most interesting characters I know, who really helped me open up as a person and grow into the artist I am today.” Chase uses a wide variety of mediums and says that he is always looking for new ones to experiment with. “I carry a micron pen and sketchbook under my arm everywhere I go. Seriously, everywhere; to the store, friends’ houses, dinner, everywhere.” He described the sketchbook as a peak into his brain as well as the first step for bigger projects. Along with oil painting and micron pen he uses mixed media, collage, and sometimes even found material. Chase said, “I also draw frequently with India ink and metal nib pen, a technique I learned from Jim O’Halloran at Arts West.” In 2014, Chase moved to Manhattan and lived in Harlem at 149th St and Broadway where he attended Parsons School of Design. He graduated in May of 2018 with his BFA in Fine Arts. He described the city as inspiring him in the same ways that the river

The relationships between city and nature are the major interests of my practice.” He describes his art as a way to educate or inform viewers of an idea or concept. “My goal with painting is to ignite a sensation in the viewer that compels them to create, either physically or to manifest understanding and awareness within themselves of what I’ve put forth.” You can find Chase’s work locally at Maison Blue in downtown Eagle or online at his website listed below. AHI SUSHI BAR Fresh Fish and Friendly Faces By Kayli Corbin Photography Kimberlee Miller

In San Diego, there’s a sushi bar on every corner. You’ll never know the quality that you’re going to get and the prices can be astronomical. There’s truly something to be said for a dining experience that highlights high-quality, fresh fish made to delight your palate – which is exactly what Ahi Sushi Bar has to offer. Tawnie and Randy Makua moved here from San Diego in 2006. They loved the small-town vibe that Eagle offered and had friends that were already established here. Randy worked as a sushi chef and caterer in San Diego, so it was a clear decision for the couple to open Ahi Sushi Bar in 2007. The customers who first started coming are now close friends – which is to be expected after 11 years of repeat patronage. Randy and Tawnie have raised their family in Eagle and are now proud employers of 3 of their children, Nicholas, Nolan, and Mahryn, who complete a variety of tasks in the restaurant. Branton and Briggs, their younger sons aspire to be sushi chefs as well! Daniel Malic is a close family friend who worked with Randy in San Diego and has been Ahi Sushi Bar’s manager since the beginning. It’s clear that this family is dedicated to providing an amazing dining experience and being close to the ones they love. The selection available at Ahi Sushi Bar is something equally as easy to love. They have an exclusive relationship with a wholesale provider of fish sourced from Ha-

waii. As long as an order is placed by 10AM, they can expect fresh fish flown in and delivered the next day at the same time. Bigeye tuna and pumpkin marlin are rare treats to find in the valley, but easy finds at the restaurant. The fresh uni is such a crowd favorite, they have a text distribution list to notify customers when it’s available! Tawnie shared, “We pride our self on ordering fish every other day. We don’t do a once a week order and our emphasis is on freshness and quality. We want the fish to speak for itself.” The A-Bomb is a crowd favorite featuring spicy yellowtail, jalapeno, salmon, avocado, cilantro, masago, and Damn Sauce. Damn Sauce is a house-made basil habanero sauce that is sure to leave you wanting more. The catering options at Ahi Sushi Bar are truly unique and incredibly budget-friendly. Whether it’s a house party, corporate event, or a wedding – you can get the right fit for you. A personalized catering plan is created and can accommodate your friends who would never dare try raw fish, the sashimi lovers, and everything in between. Made to order options are available in addition to a premade selection when Randy or Daniel attends your event. If you’re looking for something more low-key, you can always pick up a personalized platter to-go that includes all your favorites. Ahi Sushi Bar is located right off E State Street and Hill Road. Their second location is expected Summer 2019 and will offer exciting new concepts with fresh fish and seafood delicacy. ¢ Be sure to follow Ahi Sushi Bar on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date. Co-owners of King Hardwood Floors, Mike King (pictured here) and his wife, Roanne, have established themselves as the Treasure Valley’s leading flooring company.

BE PREPARED TO BE FLOORED King Hardwood Floors By Janelle Stear

Photography Kimberlee Miller

Walking into a friend’s newly remodeled house, you are wowed at the exquisite details of the floors. The wood with the color variations, the whorls and the grain tell a story about when it stood majestic in a forest. Now it takes on a new life in a home as a solid foundation in which the family will tread on for generations to come. The beauty in the wood floor is a comfort and a treasure, worthy of care, and it was all done by King Hardwood Floors. A COMPANY WITH HEART When Mike King first began working in the hardwood floor trade in Southern California during the early 1990s, he fell in love with the process of dedicated craftsmanship he could achieve for family homes, and he learned the importance for developing quality work. Now in Idaho, Mike says, “I’m excited to be a part of the growing community and

truly enjoy getting to know my customers and meeting their flooring needs. I understand that you’ll be living on your floors for years to come and want to make sure your experience is enjoyable from the initial estimate to the final product.” THEY PROVIDE ONLY THE BEST PRODUCTS TO CUSTOMERS As co-owners of King Hardwood Floors, Mike and his wife, Roanne, have established themselves as the Treasure Valley’s leading flooring company in the areas of customized service and quality craftsmanship. Roanne, the office manager and marketing director, explains they provide a personalized experience with whatever your flooring needs. They work with local distributors to provide only the highest quality of flooring, finish, and stain options. Mike and his small team of journeymen go the extra mile to match your new or refinished floor to your home’s style and feel.

A PASSION FOR FLOORS “Mike specifically loves restorations, remodels, and refinishes,” Roanne states. “He’s a craftsman who not only wants to create a quality product, but desires to customize each project according to his customer’s needs. He’s known for offering suggestions and often helping homeowners to see the potential of their floors in a whole new light.” Their most popular flooring choices includes the option for Rubio Monocoat Sealer and Stain: “Rubio Monocoat is a plantbased hardwax oil wood finish that is 0% VOC.” When the team at King Hardwood Floors coats your newly installed, refinished or reclaimed wood floor, it highlights the natural grain variances of each board with phenomenal results. Think raw, unaltered traditional oak, the rich dark and light tapestry of hickory, or the refined appearance of maple—each sealed with a velvety, matte finish in any color you desire!

SAWTOOTH MASTERS Swimming for Health and Camaraderie By Lynn Canning Photography Kimberlee Miller

It’s a frosty early morning in Eagle, the kind that tempts you to hit snooze and remain under warm covers. When the alarm rings at 5 AM, Jane does not linger. She has her coffee, grabs her suit, and heads for the YMCA where she along her teammates dive into the still blue waters of the 50-meter competition pool for morning practice. Jane is a member of Boise’s adult swim program, Sawtooth Masters (SAWS), and her participation in the club motivates her and the team’s 92 members to swim and

60

strive to improve. Under the umbrella of the national organization, United States Masters Swimming (USMS), the local club offers community members an organized program that provides daily swim workouts with a certified swim coach on-deck. The coach customizes workouts, provides instruction, feedback and most importantly, motivation to get in the water to swim hard and reach their goals. Sound intimidating? Head YMCA Coach, Rick McQuet, wants you to know that swimmers of all levels are welcome and thrive within the program. The swim lanes are organized by ability/speed and he will help you find your place where you can expect to connect with a swim-buddy or two. Each swimmer brings his/her own objectives to the pool, and the coaches assist with building a strategy to meet that

goal. There are many reasons swimmers join the team: health/fitness, recreation, or social benefits and camaraderie. Others are interested in competing in triathlons, open-water, or local/national/international swim meets. The team composition ranges from new swimmers who recently learned to swim and want to develop their skills, to “fast lane” swimmers who are national or world champions. Yumiko Luke learned to swim as an adult, and after raising her kids, dedicated herself to improving her health through swimming and “someday competing in a triathlon.” Today you will find her faithfully at noon practice at the West Y pool, always a calm and friendly presence, but tightly focused on improving her technique and achieving new goals. She has competed in several swim competitions and triathlons and is quick to volunteer and participate. She was pivotal in establishing the 2018 “Adult Learn to Swim” program in conjunction with the YMCA that taught life-saving swimming skills to adults in our community. Swimmers on the team also benefit from sharing the pool with the elite of the swimming world. Coach McQuet is an accomplished swimmer and a member of the 1996 US Olympic water polo team. Other swimmers actively compete and win on the national stage. Robert Strand, known for his fast breast-stroke and wisecracking during practice, has been swimming seriously for 50+ years and has set more than 150 national/world records. He is serious about his swimming but relishes his time out of the pool at team socials where he can talk swimming and entertain fellow swimmers with his storytelling. SAWs encourages all swimmers in the community to show up on-deck, meet the coach, and try a practice. Whether you are new to the sport, a lapsed swimmer wanting to reconnect to the water or currently train by yourself, there is a place for you on the team. We each have a different swimming resume, but there is a great commonality: we derive great benefits from the chlorinated waters…physical, mental, social, and swimmers love to connect with other swimmers. ¢ Check out sawtoothmasters.org or ymcatvidaho.org/program/us-mastersswimming-program for more information.
