COMMUNITY NOTE
Dear Readers, Summer is in full swing and there’s no better time to get out and enjoy all that Eagle has to offer. The next couple of months are filled with awesome activities for families, friends, and couples alike. Summer weekends are the perfect time to explore Idaho. A family day trip to Cascade offers activities including boating, fishing, water skiing, golfing, and much more. Eagle Island State Park and other local parks have undergone major renovations that you won’t want to miss. At Eagle Island enjoy the new 18-hole frisbee golf course, the newly renovated and refinished slide, and, of course, the swimming. Look out for the Eagle Tennis Club facility now located on the southeast corner of State Highway and Edgewood Lane. This issue also features spotlights on local businesses that are booming and non-profits that are seeking to make Eagle and our Treasure Valley community an even more incredible place to call home. Olive and Vyne, Quilting on the Grid, and Shine Dance Fitness are businesses to keep your eye on.
With offerings including free oil and balsamic vinegar taste testing; a groundbreaking, new quilting technology; and an interactive, health-promoting environment, these local businesses provide new experiences for each of us to enjoy. A couple nonprofit organizations are also improving the quality of life here in Eagle. Idaho Loves to Learn is working to incorporate more project-based learning into our education system and Idaho2Fly is helping support men with cancer through group fly-fishing and relationship building. This issue offers different ways to get involved and participate in community service. Eagle offers so much to do right here at home. Set aside some time and plan to take full advantage of all the opportunities these summer months afford! Sincerely, Tia Crabtree

TALKING POINTS
PARKS & REC MONTH JULY 2016 By Christina Coats, City of Eagle Parks & Rec Beginning in 1985, America started recognizing July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation month. With fun themes each year, Parks and Rec is excited to help families everywhere enjoy the outdoors. This year’s theme is super heroes! It’s a perfect opportunity to get outside and enjoy all that Eagle has to offer. Be a local super hero and celebrate with the City of Eagle Parks and Recreation Department. The best way to celebrate with us is by participating in Eagle Fun Days on July 8-9, 2016. On Friday, July 8th, join the super heroes of Parks and Recreation at Eagle City Hall from 6-9pm for Family Fun Night. You’ll meet Captain Community, the Green Guardian, and the Fit Twins and enjoy an evening of food, games, and family entertainment. There will be bounce houses, food trucks, sports activities, cornhole, police & fire obstacle courses, music, and more! On Saturday July 9th, celebrate Eagle as the city hosts a fun run, parade, Saturday Market, live music, a custom car show, cornhole tournament, and more. Be sure to appreciate the events at Heritage Park, a local park located in the heart of downtown Eagle where most of the activities will be held. Find your super powers by visiting a park, registering for a recreation program, or by participating in any of the activities offered in July and throughout the rest of the year.
Any articles and/or opinions expressed therein do not necessarily reflect the views of Eagle Magazine or the City of Eagle but remain solely those of the author(s).

Idaho2Fly:

When cancer survivor Timm Brown arrived at his first Idaho2Fly retreat near Mackay a year ago, he was a guest who would pick up a fly rod and reel for the first time. When he showed up at his second last fall outside Ashton, he was a volunteer jack-of-all-trades. He enjoyed both retreats equally. “I was already looking through and past the guest portion and toward giving back,” Brown said. Idaho2Fly recently extended its support of men with cancer beyond fly-fishing destinations and into the larger community. The nonprofit organization followed up more frequently with retreat guests and their families, established a year-round presence by adding events, and grew its referral network inside and outside the health professions. Board members fielded more inquiries about volunteering as they planned for the long term.

“THESE GUYS WILL SAY, ‘I SPENT THE DAY ON THE RIVER AND I DIDN’T THINK ABOUT MY CANCER ONCE.’ AND THAT IS A HEALTH BENEFIT”
“We are pleased with the success we have had so far, and we are working hard to build an organization that will survive all of the individuals and continue as a valuable participant in the community,” board President David Lombardi said. “It’s important that this continue beyond any of us.”

Lifelong fly fisher Dick Wilson, a semi-retired neurologist, started putting together what would become Idaho2Fly after attending another organization’s retreat for men with cancer in Montana in 2009. “These guys will say, ‘I spent the day on the river and I didn’t think about my cancer once.’ And that is a health benefit,” he said of many 2Fly retreat guests.

In a two-angler, one-rod approach, a 2Fly volunteer “fishing friend” with considerable on-water experience assists the guest on-stream. Knowing when to just listen is important for fishing friends, about 20 percent of whom have had cancer themselves, said Wilson, board member and program director.

VOLUNTEER
Idaho2Fly volunteer Tom Jans last fall fished with a retreat guest who, after catching his first ever fish on any kind of tackle, immediately decided to take up fly fishing and get more involved with the organization.
“ SOME GUESTS DON’T PURSUE THE SPORT ON THEIR OWN LATER BUT WANT TO VOLUNTEER ANYWAY,” HE SAID.

“ THE PROGRAM HELPS ALL OF US IN OUR DIFFERENT STAGES OF TREATMENT,” HE SAID.
Brown, as a retreat guest at the end of his own cancer treatment and then as a volunteer, said he enjoyed connecting with everyone—from guests and fishing friends to various volunteers, including discussion leaders from the health professions.

Not all guests want to say much about their cancer, at least initially, but “the program helps all of us in our different stages of treatment,” he said. 18

Idaho2Fly Idaho2Fly each June holds a fishing derby, its major fundraiser. Ron Sali has hosted the last few at his Eagle-area ranch, a former gravel production site now home to lakes, wetlands, conservation easements, and a spawning habitat project co-sponsored by Trout Unlimited.
“I lost both parents to cancer, so it was an easy thing for me to do,” Sali said. “Those guys are extremely well organized, so they make it easy for me.” He is involved in various nonprofits, and 2Fly is “one of my favorites. It’s a great bunch of guys.”

A MAKEOVER IS A MAKEOVER. Whether you are a woman or a much beloved water slide, sometimes you need a little freshening up. And after 33 years, the old slide at Eagle Island State Park finally got a new skin and a new coat of paint. “The waterslide has recently received a facelift! It has been rejuvenated and recoated to bring back the color, speed, and quality,” said Gary Shelley, the park manager at Eagle Island. 20

www.eaglemagazine.com
In fact, the whole park has had some work done to prepare for the busy summer months. First, the entrance; the old one on Hatchery and Linder is now closed. Everyone is to come through the new State street entry. The disc golf course has been expanded from 9 to 18 holes and will be open year round for all those disc fanatics. And if you haven’t heard, there is a zip line tour that will give you a view and a thrill of Eagle Island like you’ve never experienced.
There are several options, but for $79, you will get a three-hour, multi zip line experience that will have you 80 feet up in the air and going up to 40 miles per hour. This new feature is definitely not for the faint of heart. (All tours have to be booked online at ZipBoise.com).
JENNIFER OKERLUND is the Communications Manager for Idaho Parks and Recreation. Since she grew up in Eagle, she admits to having a soft spot for Eagle Island. “You can drive ten minutes down the road to Eagle Island and be in a different world. This place has the potential to be the Valley’s central park. I’m excited to see what this park will become when it grows up.” And when you realize the park is 560 acres and more than 400 of those acres have not been touched, you too can see the potential. “We have a master plan for down the road to provide overnight camping, to build more nature trails, a nature center, and an amphitheater in the park,” said Okerlund.
With the lake, the slide, and paddle boards for rent, there are all kinds of spontaneous activities to do this summer. Or bring your appetite and head over for the annual Blues and Bones festival on August 20th. If you are a Blues fan and a BBQ aficionado, you will have found your corner of heaven. Don’t forget there is a five dollar per car entry fee at all state parks. But that shouldn’t scare you away, especially if you have children. Okerlund says they have teamed up with the libraries in Idaho to offer kids and their families a free pass to all Idaho state parks if they reach their summer reading goal.
If you have a 4th grader, there’s also the “Every Kid in a Park” program. To celebrate the 100th birthday of the National Park Service, all fourth graders and their families get into all federal parks for free. “We decided that our Idaho state parks would honor that program as well,” said Okerlund. The City of Eagle has also been very busy sprucing up a few of their parks and putting together a line-up of activities that should appeal to just about everyone, from new playground equipment at Friendship Park to an extensive, professionally designed bicycle Skills Park at the Ada-Eagle Sports Park. There is also a new Adaptive Trail at the Sports Park off of Old Horseshoe Bend Road. It is ten feet wide and compatible with all the requirements for the American Disabilities Act.
THE CITY OF EAGLE IS ALSO OFFERING A HOST OF RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES.
AND LET’S NOT FORGET ALL THE ACTIVITIES COMING UP.
Starting in July and August they have courses on everything from Computer Animation and Video Game programming and Junior Public Speaking (TED Talk style), to art classes and a Circus Camp.

THE ARTS
Quilting on the Grid
By Sara Mitton Cox PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jim Peterson
Local Business Reinvents Quilting

Several years ago, Mary Grover imagined a product that would make the art of quilting easier, cheaper, and accessible to so many women who longed to do it. And unlike most people who dream up a new invention, she actually created a prototype, endured the long, grueling process of getting it patented, and then had it manufactured. The result is a growing business her and her husband run out of their Meridian home called Quilting on the Grid.
Quilting on the Grid offers project kits containing a pattern and the special batting needed to make it. This method isn’t meant to create big, bed-sized quilts; instead Mary designs patterns that make it easy for beginners, such as small, hanging quilts, placemats, table runners, and purses.
“Many women confess that they have started, but never finished, a quilt because of lack of time,” said Mary. “Our products are smaller and designed for Mary had always wanted to quilt, and throughout everyday use, and give people a creative escape in a her life kept saying “someday”. LIVING
Family Day Trip
By Pamela Kleibrink Thompson PHOTOGRAPHY BY Lance Thompson
Cascade—the name evokes cool water plunging over smoothly polished rock. Seventy-six miles (1½ hours) north of Boise, Cascade is an easy day trip for a family interested in exploring mountain trails, boating or fishing on Lake Cascade, or tubing on the north fork of the Payette River. Cascade is a shorter trip up Highway 55 than McCall, which can be a welcome bonus for those traveling with the “Are we there yet?” set. As you travel along the Payette River, keep your eyes open for wildlife such as fox, deer, elk, blue heron, osprey, and bald eagles. Lake Cascade is famous for swimming, sailing, water-skiing, and fishing. Idaho’s fourth largest lake was formed in 1948 when Cascade Dam was completed. The reservoir is home to three bird sanctuaries as well as trout, small mouthed bass, and yellow perch.
Cascade
Your family will find more turbulent thrills at Kelly’s Whitewater Park—Idaho’s first, which opened in June 2010 and is free to the public. The man-made rapids give whitewater enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels a place to practice in a semi-controlled environment. Kelly’s Whitewater Park was built to honor the memory of Kelly Brennan, an outdoor enthusiast who died in an automobile accident in Utah.
If you didn’t pack a picnic, try the pepperoni pizza or Hawaiian chicken sandwich at the Whistle Stop Café or enjoy a salad bar, soup, and homemade pie at Gramma’s Family Restaurant. For overnighters, the Ashley Inn is a special spot where families can celebrate special times. Owners Katrin and Ashley Thompson love entertaining. “That’s what it’s all about—helping to create family bonds and memories.” The Victorian style Ashley Inn offers modern amenities including a guest computer with internet access. Guests are welcome to play the baby grand piano in the lobby. Common areas are furnished with antiques. Open 24 hours, the heated indoor pool is surrounded by storefronts reminiscent of small town America. Freshly baked cookies and frosty milk are served every evening in the lobby. Family friendly breakfasts include Belgian waffles with honey, fresh fruit, and hot chocolate with whipped cream.
Campers and RVers can book riverside sites at the Water’s Edge RV Resort. Canoes and kayaks are available for guests of the Water’s Edge and Ashley Inn. As you paddle the peaceful Payette, you might spot river otters, pelicans, Canadian Geese, or trumpeter swans and reflect on the For hikers, picturesque Crown Point Trail offers great views of adventures you’ve had in Cascade. Lake Cascade and West Mountain. An easy 2.4 mile shoreline trail, Crown Point Trail provides access to sandy beaches for fishing, picnicking, or birdwatching. To get to Crown Point Trail, turn off Highway 55 onto Lake Way Road (north Cascade) and follow ½ mile to Crown Point parking area. The trailhead is next to the camping area. Golfing options include the 9-hole Cascade Golf Course with magnificent scenic views of West Mountain across Lake Cascade; Osprey Meadows at Tamarack, a challenging par-72 signature course designed by Robert Trent Jones II; and the 18hole course at Jug Mountain Ranch, north-east of Cascade.

FACE 2 FACE
The Activity Group Grows, Quietly By Brad Carlson PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jim Peterson
When the trauma-geared medical solutions you supply end up in the hands of military and civilian first responders working with no time to spare in challenging settings, your company’s growth can seem of secondary concern.
“There are so many of these technologies that have crossover potential in the civilian market,” said Burns, who is 30 years old. “At The Activity Group, it is our job to bridge that gap from the military arena to the civilian marketplace.”
The people who run The Activity Group take an enthusiastic but sensitive approach, celebrating a cutting-edge technology’s newly documented success in the field much more than they celebrate their own likely need to add staff and space soon.
Shannon Cook, a co-owner with Burns and Neil Cook (no relation), said compared to his other ventures—like multifamily and commercial real estate, service businesses and restaurants—The Activity Group presented more unknowns and a unique excitement.
The work is “incredibly rewarding,” in a way that goes beyond monetary returns, majority owner and CEO James Burns said. Medical first responders continuously seek the best equipment and techniques to treat patients faster and more effectively, but now the public is increasingly aware of these solutions’ importance, he said. Field tests and demonstrations, not sales pitches, get these devices and training programs into use. The demand to be as safe and well prepared as possible is strong—injury is the leading cause of death among persons aged 1 to 44, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—“and we want to help,” Chief Operating Officer Michael Daniels said. The Activity Group acquires and distributes cuttingedge trauma products, innovative safety technology, and comprehensive training solutions to military, law enforcement, emergency services, and private-sector customers worldwide. Burns said recent growth drivers include kits for schools and the ACT awareness and training package, with action, communication, and treatment components. The company employs about ten people at 204 Ellen St., Garden City. Many staffers have experience in the military, which now contributes the largest share of revenue.

“It ignited in me a passion to be involved with a company that had such a profound impact on the ability to affect positive changes on a mass level,” Shannon Cook said. “Every person who works at The Activity Group loves what they are doing, making it a success on a personal level.” Eagle residents Cook and Burns said the company may build a new headquarters and distribution facility in the next two years, ideally in Eagle, based on recent and anticipated growth. Headcount could quadruple. “We see 2016 as being the most significant in our ramp-up phase,” said Cook, 46 years of age. The Activity Group was among product winners at the 2016 EMS Today Conference & Exposition in Baltimore, for an advanced first aid kit of primarily new components. Founders Burns, Daniels, John Wootton, and Michael Moore, as well as Neil Cook, brought defense and aerospace industry experience. Shannon Cook got involved soon after the May 2015 launch to help with strategic planning.

Dancing Your Way to Fit
By Lonni Leavitt-Barker PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jim Peterson
Shine Dance Fitness isn’t just for people in Eagle
Who would ever expect a dance class in Eagle, Idaho to attract students from as far away as Tokyo and Poland or Indonesia and Jerusalem? The Shine Dance Fitness classes are doing just that—emerging as a United Nations of sorts when it comes to dance workout sessions.
choreographed to current music, while others are thankful for the weight they’ve lost or the confidence they’ve gained. “The testimonials make my jaw drop,” said Nielsen. “Some say these classes take them away from loneliness, some say they can escape from real life trials—it is therapeutic.”
Kendall Nielsen started with her first class and five women back in 2009. Her business has now grown into a small empire. She teaches four classes a week to a core of about 300 local women at the Eagle Performing Arts Center. But it is technology that has made her into an international guru. She has millions of hits on her YouTube videos and more than 37 thousand subscribers who follow along and dance from home. Many of them come from every corner of the world.
Her classes are designed for all abilities and all levels. And perhaps that’s part of her appeal. She makes sure everyone feels welcome. Her students are her friends—a group of women who go on retreats together, go out to dinner, and rally around each other when one of their own is in a crisis.
Not bad for a woman who used to shun sweat. “Ten years ago, I was in real estate, doing great but totally out of shape. I never worked out. So I get it. I get how hard it is,” said Nielsen about taking that first step toward getting in shape. “The hardest part is just getting up and getting there.” Nielsen says her secret is making working out not about work but about having fun. “It is like a party, a sisterhood with lots of camaraderie. We want women to feel youthful, sexy, feminine, and empowered,” said Nielsen. Her website is peppered with all kinds of glowing testimonials. Some love the retro moves
34

www.eaglemagazine.com
Those same friends, her students, are the ones who have encouraged her to put her videos on YouTube, license her classes, and certify other instructors to teach Shine at Axiom and Kaifit (a fitness organization with 60 different locations). And to plan a two-day retreat in Arizona where she can meet in person many of her subscribers. With her international following growing quickly, where does Nielsen see her business in five years? “Honestly I don’t have a clue. The women just show up; it is totally up to them to see where they lead this,” said Nielsen. Those women have done perfectly fine so far. You don’t have to look far to tell she’s in good hands.

CLOSE-UP
It’s the Little Things that Matter
By Pamela Kleibrink Thompson PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jim Peterson
Camille Beckman
“Camille Beckman is a lifestyle company,” shares Roshan Roghani-Ishaq, vice president of Camille Beckman in Eagle. “We create beautiful products for women and now beautiful experiences with the long-waited addition of the Chateau in our lives.” The goal at Camille Beckman is to create a future where women are healthier and happier. All Camille Beckman beauty products and cosmetics are handmade in their 108,00 square foot factory. The facility uses 70% less energy than a similarly sized factory, thanks to the use of renewable resources and ‘reduce and recycle’ production policies. The mission of Camille Beckman is to engage, educate, and inspire women to be their best through educational content, one-of-a-kind experiences, compassionate humanitarian efforts, and the sale of high quality, sustainable goods for women. The grounds at Camille Beckman include expansive public gardens and an events center, Château des Fleurs, which is reminiscent of an elegant European countryside getaway, and a restaurant called Le Coq d’Or. Founded by Susan Camille Beckman Roghani, Camille Beckman produces beauty products in a positive work environment. “At Camille Beckman we put family first,” notes Roshan. “A lot of our team members have been with us for 15 or 20 years. We have minimal turnover because this is a good place to work. We are highly involved with our employees and know what they want to achieve. We are also flexible when they need to take care of children or grandchildren. When fami-lies are nourished and employees are given flexibility to be actively engaged in their family and their community, they are more focused and work better as members of the team.” Susan began the business in 1986 in a bungalow in the North End. Women who were refugees and recent immigrants mingled in Susan’s living room with women

who grew up in rural Idaho, communicating through art as they crafted products Susan sold at craft shows or to stores. “Our company has a multi-generational approach and employs people with diverse backgrounds,” shares Roshan. “When you have a team with different cultural backgrounds, you gain different perspectives. Oneness is one of the biggest values ingrained in our company’s culture.” When Roshan was 6, the Camille Beckman Foundation was formed. “There’s need everywhere,” says Roshan. “Our goal is to take part and contribute in the ways we feel best help the future of the women and children of this one world that we are all charged with loving.” Since 1995, The Camille Beckman Foundation has helped build orphanages and schools in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and the United States. “We work across the world and in our own state,” says Roshan. The foundation has helped more than 120 organizations that create health and education programs and provide access to basic needs for men and women in the Treasure Valley and throughout the world. Local organizations the Camille Beckman Foundation has contributed to include the Women’s and Children’s Alliance, Idaho Food Bank, Terry Reilly Health Clinic, and Genesis Health Care. The foundation helps with donations of time, products, or finances, depending on the situation. A favorite non-profit is the International Children’s Surgical Fund, run by Idaho native Dr. Geoff Williams and his mother Beverly, with whom they funded 365 cleft palate surgeries last year. Susan’s passion for enriching lives all over the world is deeply ingrained in her daughter Roshan. “Intent is key to long-term continued success,” Roshan notes. “When we release a product, we have to think about how it will affect people’s lives and how we can make a more positive impact.”
When asked what inspires her, Roshan readily answered, “Living life with awareness. We can learn from everyone. Little things inspire us— like seeing a mother teach her daughter something new or watching people smile over a shared excitement.” This idea of awareness and shared moments is what spawned the beginning of the Chateau des Fleurs, the newest addition to the Camille Beckman campus, which the Roghani family hopes will one day be a place of unity and memories for the entire community. When the Camille Beckman factory was built in 2000, additional phases for a restaurant, art gallery, music area, public gardens, and a universal peaceful prayer space were already drawn out with the hope they would one day come into fruition. As they began to discuss this expansion, the project turned from a small collection of buildings to one major building and large gardens surrounding it. Though the Chateau vision is still in its infancy stages, their plans for it are globally transforming. “No one is building art anymore. Our world is building large, bank-like buildings that all look the same and house the same ideals,” Roshan states. “Our idea is to bring the most unique and beautiful architecture and experiences together here in Idaho, and create a destination space where people can not only come for events or dinner, but also where forums on equality, wellness, purpose, and solutions can be discussed and furthered. The vision is to elevate the conversation in all attributes, from the physical building you see in front of you to the entire discourse surrounding it. Our family is half rural Idahoan and half Iranian; who better to take on the responsibility of bringing beauty to this new conversation and ideological understanding that society is ready to have? This generation is ready to unite and we feel it is our responsibility to bring the culture together through life-changing, lovedriven experiences.” One of the love-driven things you can experience with your mom, grandmother, or someone special in your life is an afternoon tea held in the Platinum Ballroom from 1-3 pm at Château des Fleurs, which is adjacent to Camille Beckman’s headquarters. Enjoy a selection of hand-blended exotic teas and fresh, house-made pastries on July 9, July 13, August 3, August 17, and August 24. In July, Château des Fleurs celebrates France with Bastille Days. Practice on the petanque (French bocce ball) court, free of charge, until July 16, to get ready for the petanque competition on July 16. Other options that weekend include celebrating Bastille Day (July 14) with a 4-course French dinner at Le Coq d’Or; enjoying the movie Moulin Rouge with cheese and charcuterie on Friday, July 15; or a picnic under the stars with Rose wine on Saturday evening (July 16).

COMMUNITY
Teaching Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s Jobs By Liza Long
“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.” –John Dewey, 20th century American philosopher and educational reformer In this divisive political season, there’s one thing nearly everyone can agree on: Our nation’s schools are failing our students. A new nonprofit is trying to change the way we think about educational success. Idaho Loves to Learn is a partnership between parents and educators whose goal is to help Idahoans see beyond the traditional classroom to the type of education students need in the 21st century.
New Non-profit Seeks to Change the Way We Think About Education and Success
“All kids learn in a different way, so we need to adapt the classroom to fit their needs,” said Jeff Johnson, a volunteer with Idaho Loves to Learn. Johnson, working with Travis Hawkes and parent volunteers, has arranged free community screenings of the acclaimed education documentary Most Likely to Succeed across the state. Johnson and Hawkes both have extensive public policy experience; Hawkes was the Idaho Finance Chair for Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign and is now a managing partner of Riverwood Strategies, an Eagle public affairs and business development firm. Most Likely to Succeed was born from director Greg Whiteley’s frustration with his own daughter’s public school experience. The film traces the development of our modern education system, with its set curriculum, standardized tests, and passive, rote memorization, to the Prussian model created 125 years ago. The world has since changed—but our education system hasn’t, to our students’ detriment. “Most public school graduates just aren’t prepared for the jobs of today,” Johnson observed. One increasingly popular alternative educational model explored in the film is project-based learning. Eric Walton, a tenth grader at Sage International School in Boise, participated in a year-long project-
40
|
www.eaglemagazine.com
based learning activity that culminated in the donation of two Conestoga huts to Interfaith Sanctuary, a community center that serves Boise’s homeless population. Walton told me that three classes of Guy Falconer’s Design Technology students designed and built the huts while reading a book about design principles. When asked what he liked about the project, Walton said, “I feel like I will now retain more of what I learned. We were learning design by actually doing it, and we made a difference in our community. Overall, it was just a better learning process than sitting in a classroom and listening to some teacher tell us about how to design stuff.” Project-based learning isn’t the only solution. Sometimes teachers can adapt a lesson to a student’s individual learning style. A parent of four children, Nicole Christensen of Idaho Falls experienced challenges with her 11-year-old son that were solved when administrators and teachers collaborated to find a creative alternative. “For the past five years, I had tried everything I could think of—two public schools, homeschool, Montessori,” Christensen told me when we spoke by telephone. “I saw Most Likely to Succeed, and thought, that is exactly what my son needs—a student led, project-based environment. Sitting still in front of a classroom white board all day doesn’t work for him.” Christensen’s son, who reads far above grade level, was allowed to pursue an individual structured research project while the other students had reading instruction. “He loves it!” Christensen said. “He used to fight me all the time about school, and now he can’t wait to go. It’s because we have allowed him to be successful using his strengths.” Every child wants to succeed. That is the message of Most Likely to Succeed, and it’s a message that is resonating with Idaho parents and educators.

CUISINE
An Infusion of Great Taste
By Pamela Kleibrink Thompson PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jim Peterson
Olive & Vyne
Before opening their charming tasting room that carries specialty olive oil and balsamic vinegar, Hope Manna and Kellie Allred worked in the entertainment industry in California. Hope owned a post-production company on Olive Avenue in Burbank and doubled as a writer/producer. Kellie was a producer/director for various film studios, including Paramount Studios which was located near Hollywood and Vine. “We thought Olive and Vyne was a fun play on words. We named the store in a matter of minutes,” recalls Kellie. At Olive and Vyne you can “try before you buy.” Bread is available for dipping and cherry tomatoes or cucumbers for gluten-free guests. With over 30 varieties from around the world, there are plenty of flavors to sample and enjoy. “We like to have fun with our customers and talk about food non-stop,” says Kellie. A favorites for salad is cucumber melon balsamic vinegar paired with basil-infused olive oil; for meat and poultry, try chile pepper balsamic vinegar paired with garlic-infused olive oil. Pancakes and waffles are elevated, replacing vegetable oil with blood orange extra virgin olive oil and substituting huckleberry balsamic for maple syrup. “Our tagline for Olive and Vyne is ‘a unique tasting experience,’” notes Hope. “When people come into our shop, we consider them guests in our homes. Hospitality is key and we love to create a fun atmosphere. We want people to relax and take as much time as they need to taste, explore, and hopefully have fun in the process.” “We are known for our rotating seasonal recipes throughout the shop to give people new ideas from soup to nuts. (Literally!),” says Kellie. “We love our products and use them every day. When you love what you do, it is somewhat contagious.” “Nearly everything at Olive and Vyne is gluten-free and organically produced, so it makes for a healthy indulgence and flavorful choice for people with allergies, celiac disease, heart conditions, weight conscious, or simply mindful of healthy ingredients,” notes Hope. “I can’t tell you how many people have told us that our products have made a difference in their meals and in turn, how they feel about food. That’s a beautiful thing.”
42

www.eaglemagazine.com
“Olive and Vyne has been nominated two years in a row for Best Gluten Free Menu in the Treasure Valley. We take pride in that,” says Kellie. “For us, helping a customer is more than making a sale,” says Hope. “This might not be the best business advice for someone starting a new business, but our focus is really about our customers’ palate. What do they like to eat? Do they have dietary or medical limitations? Are their kids picky about food? Do they like to entertain? Do they like to cook and experiment or do they want big flavor quickly with little hassle? We really want to understand our customers and then help them to find flavors that they can take home and be excited about.” Hope and Kellie have been Eagle residents for five years. Hope relocated to Idaho in 2010. “I love the vibe in Eagle. It’s a great town filled with interesting restaurants, shops, easy going people, and a deep sense of community. I try to support Eagle in all that I do, including personal and business. I’m delighted to see Eagle grow and thrive and for Olive and Vyne to be a part of it.” Kellie is a native Idahoan. She grew up in Boise, attended Capital High School, and received a degree in film from San Diego State. “I had a fulfilling and fascinating career in Hollywood but moved back to Idaho to be near family,” says Kellie. “Family is very important for me.” Olive and Vyne just celebrated a 2 year anniversary on April 29th, which is also Hope’s birthday. In addition to olive oil and balsamic vinegar, the tasting room has expanded to include specialty herbs, spices and sugar, gluten-free baking mixes, unique merchandise, and a wide variety of gift-giving options. Visit their North Channel Center First Wednesday Patio Party on July 6th, August 3rd, and September 7th for free wine tasting, prize giveaways, live music, and local artists. Stay cool and relaxed under the misters. Hope’s philosophy of life is “Do what you love, love what you do.” Kellie’s also fits their approach. “Enjoy life with love, laughter, family and friends, and of course, great olive oil and balsamic vinegar!”

RECRE ATION
A New Player in Town
By Pamela Kleibrink Thompson PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jim Peterson
Eagle Tennis Club
If you play tennis or aspire to, you’ll have reason to celebrate the opening of the Eagle Tennis Club. This 90,000 square foot, state of the art, upscale tennis facility is located at the Southeast corner of State St (Hwy 44) and Edgewood Lane. Avid tennis player and Eagle resident Kara Hoge recruited local business man, community developer and athlete, Caleb Roope, and Mountain America Credit Union, to help develop her dream and to provide a valuable asset to the Treasure Valley and City of Eagle residents. Funding for her vision was not easy to obtain so she scaled back the project to be completed in phases. The first phase includes 12 indoor state-of-the-art climate controlled tennis courts; a 325 foot long floating mezzanine for optimal viewing of all courts and socializing; fitness classes and workout gym; a certified personal trainer; online system for tennis court reservation and tennis and fitness class sign up; a restaurant; a clubhouse and locker rooms; tennis lessons, clinics and programs led by certified tennis professionals; summer junior tennis camps for ages 4-18 and all skill levels (filling up fast, taking reservations now); and sand volleyball courts. “Phase II of ETC will bring many amenities including swimming pools, day spa, anti-aging and wellness doctor, physical therapist, hair and nail salon, boutique, large workout area, outdoor tennis courts, daycare, basketball, and more,” says Hoge. “I chose the ETC location to make it easier for people to walk and ride their bikes to our club,” states Hoge. “The Greenbelt is located directly behind our facility. It is also very easy access with the stoplight on State and Edgewood.” “The facility and its amenities will be a great place for the community and to grow the game,” owner/manager Hoge comments. She wants it to be a place where everyone can come and feel welcome. Hoge plans to have lots of youth tennis programs as well as other activities. She wants to keep young players active, involved, and having fun so she plans to have numerous junior tournaments and a traveling team. “Tennis is a fun, challenging sport. You can play and stay fit while having a great time. I really enjoy the social part of it too; it is a lifetime sport where you make lifetime friends,” asserts Hoge.

Hoge started playing tennis seven years ago after beating breast cancer. “I had always wanted to try it,” reflects Hoge, “but I played volleyball and softball when I was in school and tennis conflicted with the schedules. I fell in love with it and saw the need for a tennis club with amenities that support wellness, core, family, and community!” A luxury atmosphere and extravagant amenities at the facility will allow members to indulge in massages and manicures, as well as the professional services of an on staff chiropractor and physical therapist, and tennis directors. Hoge’s goal is to bring tennis players, non-tennis players, and families together to a place where they can stay and play all day. “I want people to come and feel like they just walked into a resort and they’re going to be treated like a queen or king,” stated Hoge. When asked what she likes most about Eagle, Hoge responded, “The people! We have lived here for 23 years and raised our family in this wonderful community.” Her family attends many of the community events. “I especially love all the beautiful places you can walk to without having to drive into town.” The greater Boise area has one of the highest per-capita rates of tennis participation in adult tournaments and leagues according to the United States Tennis Association (USTA). There are 4,500 USTA members in the Treasure Valley. The Treasure Valley is in the top 10 per capita of the USTA memberships. With Hoge’s help there will be a lot more. Eagle Tennis Club membership prices vary depending on if it is a tennis single, couple, or family. There is the choice of paying monthly or annually too. Fitness memberships are also available. Guest fees vary depending on desired activities. The clubhouse, tennis viewing, restaurant and other amenities are open to the public. Residents in the Treasure Valley will be able to play tennis year round. “The club is designed to bring people to a great place and have them feel good about themselves, and just have fun,” states Hoge.
