TALKING POINTS
BLACKSMITHING IN EAGLE By Mayor Jim Reynolds The origin of the blacksmith dates back thousands of years, when our species first began to experiment and tinker with the metals we pulled up from the ground. Smith, the most common surname in English, simply means someone who works with metal. There is a “smith” for nearly every metal—goldsmiths, silversmiths, coppersmiths, etc.—but the most useful was the blacksmith. Named for the color of the iron with which they worked, they were by far the most common. While others crafted things of beauty, the blacksmith made tools, cooking implements, and weapons, which were used, across the world in every culture. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow immortalized “The Village Blacksmith” in poetry. It opens with: “Under a spreading chestnut tree, the village smithy stands. The smith, a mighty man is he, with large and sinewy hands; and the muscles of his brawny arms are strong as iron bands.” He was a familiar sight in villages across the developing world. When Thomas Aikens bought the land that would become Eagle in 1893, the Snider Blacksmith Shop was the only operating business in the entire area. In 1907, the Idaho Statesman ran a story entitled “Great Progress in Eagle” noting that E.L. Eytcheson operated a blacksmith shop, the location of which was found to be “very satisfactory, as he is kept very busy.” By 1909, it was known as the Eytcheson Brothers, and Snow & Bardwell had opened a second blacksmith shop in downtown Eagle. In time, others entered the business, including a Justin “Chilly” Chilcott. The most notable and successful of these smiths, however, has to be Joseph W.
Cullen. Born in a log cabin near Butte, Idaho in 1896, Joe and the family moved frequently in search of employment. The family bought and farmed 120 acres near Brownlee for 9 years before finally moving to Eagle in 1913.
Joe fathered a creative family, and in the 1970’s his grandson Les developed the Fabco Stove, a handy device that fit into fireplaces. His five employees quickly grew to over 100 as its popularity spread across the country.
Joe built his own blacksmith shop near his home on South Eagle Road in 1917. By 1920, he was able to buy out Chilly Chilcott’s shop across from present day McDonalds. He was very successful, with almost more work than he could handle. He added a machine shop and began making stock trailers for neighboring farmers and ranchers. In 1926, Joe added an acetylene welder and expanded his product line to include hay derricks and about anything else his customers needed. Right as everything seemed to be going his way, disaster struck.
From humble beginnings with a strong right arm and a borrowed anvil, Joe Cullen grew his business in an atmosphere of free enterprise and American ingenuity. The Cullen’s served their customers well, and in return their business flourished. To this day it lives as one of the best examples of the Eagle community coming together to help each other succeed.
One evening in 1928 a fire broke out, and his business could not be saved. The shop, tools, and records were all destroyed in the blaze. In some towns, he might have never recovered, but his Eagle creditors stepped up, came to his rescue, and provided the resources to rebuild. He didn’t take their help for granted, quickly rebuilding and adding a modern machine shop where he repaired and crafted farm tractor attachments and hoists. His blacksmithing skill was in high-demand for adapting late-model farm machinery to tractors.

In the mid-sixties, a local farmer came to the Cullen Machine Shop requesting gates made from standard 2-inch pipe. This event stirred his son Joey’s creative nature, and resulted in the popular Adjusto-Gate. It was so wellreceived that it became a company on its own. They built gates, temporary corrals, holding pens, and pick-up racks. Adjusto-Gate was home of the adjustable telescoping gate, a novel idea that customers loved.

E
agle in the summer is a landscape artist’s dream. From the dappled light of the tree-lined Boise River to the verdant horse pastures and farmland to sensuously curved golden foothills, the community offers a palette of open air creative inspiration. This July, critically acclaimed Idaho plein-air painters will converge on Eagle for the first annual Eagle Paint Out, a three-day competition sponsored by the Gallery at Finer Frames. The event will be open to the public, meaning that Treasure Valley residents will have the opportunity to observe the creative process firsthand as new works of art are born.
The three-day event takes place from July 16-18 in various outdoor locations in the community, including historic downtown, the Greenbelt, and Eagle Island State Park. Artists who register for the competition have the opportunity to compete for cash prizes as well as showcasing their creative process and talents to a wide audience. On July 18, a two hour free public “quick draw” competition is open to all artists; a sale of works produced in this competition will coincide with the Eagle Saturday Market in Heritage Park that day. The larger three-day competition will be judged by Gregg Russell, a highly respected Idaho artist who is represented by the Gallery at Finer Frames here in Eagle and the West Lives On gallery in Jackson, Wyoming. “The art of plein air painting has a rich history,” Russell says. “It dates back to the 1800s when Impressionist artists like Claude Monet tried to capture the effects of light on objects. Its importance still rings true today. Artists have always wanted to communicate the world around them, and plein air painting allows artists to interpret their own communities and surroundings in an individualized way.”
“...plein air painting... provides a spontaneity of style.”
Plein air painting takes the artist out of the studio and into the landscape, where light and color work with the artist to create an impression. Mark Davis, a painter participating in Eagle Paint Out, says, “I think the reason people are so attracted to plein air painting is that it provides a spontaneity of style that you just can’t get with any other type of painting.”
Meg Glasgow, owner of Finer Frames and the event’s sponsor, notes, “A new art event like the Eagle Paint Out is a wonderful way to highlight the beauty of our community while bringing the artist and collector together in an exciting way. It’s a unique experience because the people have an opportunity to engage directly with the artists, watch them create, learn about this unique process of painting, and then support the artists by purchasing a unique creation that will add beauty and value to their homes.” 16

The paintings produced in the Eagle Paint Out will be exhibited at Glasgow’s gallery on Eagle’s last Thursday Art Walk (see inset box). Glasgow and Eagle Art Gallery owner Stephen Douglas are partnering to promote Eagle artists, staying open late on
last Thursdays in conjunction with the city’s Heritage Park summer live music series, to encourage Eagle residents to enjoy the talent showcased in our community. “Eagle has all the components to evolve into a cultural hub in the Treasure Valley. There are great restaurants. unique shops, and very friendly people,” Douglas notes, explaining why he chose to open an art gallery here.
Gregg Russell
Idaho native Toby Davis, a member of the Treasure Valley Artist’s Alliance and Oil Painters of America, is excited to try her hand at this artistic technique. “I have not done a lot of plein air painting, but I’m really looking forward to the Paint Out event,” she says. “I think it’s good to get artists out of their studios, and it gives the public a chance to see art being created. Eagle is a beautiful town and this is great way to promote the community and its continuing commitment to the arts.” Connie Karleta

Join Meg Glasgow and Stephen Douglas for Last Thursday Art Walks each last Thursday until the end of September. Listen to live music at the Heritage Park gazebo, then wander between Glasgow’s Gallery at Finer Frames and Douglas’s Eagle Art Gallery to enjoy fine art right in our community. 5:009:00 p.m., downtown Eagle.

THE ARTS
Kryptek: Battlefield to Backcountry
By Nicole Christensen Pettinger PHOTOGRAPHY courtesy of KRYPTEK
KRYPTEK. Kryptos: Greek word meaning “hidden or secret.” Techno: Greek word meaning “art, craft, or skill.” The name Kryptek as intended by its founders, Butch Whiting and Josh Cleghorn is this: The art of being hidden and protected from the elements of nature, and of being superior in field, craft, and skillsets shared by the elite. The Kryptek concept is completely driven by passion and experience. Forged from their intense experiences as former Army combat veterans and attack Apache helicopter pilots in tandem with their shared interests in extreme outdoor enthusiasts and big game hunting, Whiting and Cleghorn have established a multimillion dollar business. Started in Fairbanks, Alaska, Kryptek\ is now home-based in Eagle, Idaho. Bringing authenticity and credibility to the United States Department of the Army’s proposal request for Camouflage Improvement Effort (CIE), Krypek, with a staff of four people, went toe-to-toe with three other billion-dollar corporations. Kryptek’s camo design is unlike others. It incorporates micro and macro layering inspired by artillery camouflage netting, which also graces the ceiling of the corporate office. The brilliant, digitally created red and black office walls were designed by Cleghorn. A three-foot lacquered wood conference table is center, with big game mounts found throughout. First-class products line the walls in featured variants of the Highlander Camo. This camo will keep the wearer invisible in over 70 percent of our Earth’s landscapes. Kryptek camo will conceal you in terrains as varied as the high mountains, deserts, canyons, thick alpine forests or rocky faces of the world. Whiting describes the camo as “a heavily feathered pattern with a stark bi-level overlay. The multi-directional design combines the geometry of foliage, animal, marine, and geographical qualities to conceal lateral and vertical flow.”

www.eaglemagazine.com
Whiting is firm and intense, yet his eyes are kind, making listeners receptive to what he has to say. In contrast, his partner Cleghorn is jovial, articulate, and passionate. Striking up a brotherhood in military service, the two often discussed their love of the outdoors and extreme hunting. These friendly discussions became more serious in 2006, when they saw a need for a superior camouflage product for hunters and decided to apply their military tactical knowledge to hunting. Their designs allow hunters to blend in with their environment, giving efforts a much higher chance of success. Specialized adaptations allow increased functionality and effectiveness in rain, snow, or sleet. These include lanyardized zippers, rubberized zippers, arm-pit zippers, 4” waist adjustment, and laminate waterproof reinforced knee pad pockets. In keeping with the integrity of concept, Kryptek’s owners work diligently to make the best product that works in both battle and hunting. The entire company is staffed with elite veterans ranging from attack pilots and world renowned big game enthusiasts to Special Operations Aviation Regiment 160th pilots, known as SOAR. Whiting was an Attack Apache Helicopter Battalion Commander, and Cleghorn is one of the best pilots in the military, who helped transport our finest commandos. Life of a Surgeon By Krista Fennell PHOTOGRAPHY BY Cy Gilbert
Holding the formaldehyde-soaked pig’s foot steady, I used a small scalpel to make my first incision. After some basic instruction, I prepared to suture the wound shut. Almost instantly, I felt my palms begin to sweat, making the needle driver almost impossible to navigate. With this glimpse into the life of a surgeon, I could truly admire how they handle such life-and-death pressure with ease and skill. Dr. William H. Fredriksson, one of ten physicians who independently own and operate the Idaho Urologic Institute (IUI) and Surgery Center of Idaho (SCI) located just off S. Eagle Road in Meridian, completes an average of 15 surgeries each week. He credits his team with his ability to remain calm, cool, and collected for every patient. “My team is a vital asset,” Fredriksson says. “We could not provide quality care if it weren’t for our dedicated team of approximately 110 employees. This is something we do on a regular basis, but for those lying sedated on the table, surgery is a huge event.” The life of a surgeon comes with significant stress and countless hours spent away from home, especially when on call. Family members sacrifice a great deal in order for physicians to be able to focus and do their job well. Will’s wife Elaine and four daughters are credited as his biggest support network. “Without my family, I would not be able to complete my job and complete it well,” he says.

When he is not at the office or at home waiting for a call requesting his steady hand for surgery, he and his family enjoy the outdoor access the city of Eagle has to offer. “Last spring, my family and I moved into our new house in Eagle,” he says. “This city is a great community for families, with a host of local eateries. When the opportunity arises, we enjoy dining together at Bella Aquila. My wife and I also have a couple’s membership at Banbury Golf Club, so we spend a lot of our spare time there perfecting our golf swing. You can even see our house from the 12th hole, just beyond the river.” In contrast to his demanding career, Fredrickson and his wife enjoy traveling and just getting away to their Cascade cabin, an hour’s drive from their Eagle home. “This easy access allows me to relax any time I need to. I also enjoy traveling abroad. When time permits, I would love to travel more,” he says. Anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Fredriksson would agree that he is an important asset to this great city. With the help of his fellow owners and the dedicated team at IUI, he is constantly changing lives, one suture at a time.

Your Health Pros By Jessica McAnally PHOTOGRAPHY by Cy Gilbert
With the boom of the healthcare industry, Eagle has found itself at the epicenter of a growing number of highly qualified providers and other members of the health and wellness field. In addition to the many options available, they are all relatively close and available, which adds significant value to quality of life in the community. Here is a brief introduction to a few of the individuals who have helped improve the Treasure Valley’s wellbeing, one patient at a time. Shah Afshar is the owner and pharmacist at Customedica Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy that specializes in creating—or compounding—medications. Afshar graduated from Idaho State University’s College of Pharmacy in 1979 and has been practicing in Idaho ever since. He has owned three pharmacies in the Boise area, beginning in the 1980s, and opened Customedica Pharmacy in 2002. Customers appreciate his attention to detail and expert advice, along with the welcoming atmosphere of the pharmacy. He is truly passionate in his endeavor to personally know each person that comes into Customedica Pharmacy, and to provide him or her with a consistent and high quality experience. The pharmacy is located at 149 West State Street Suite 101. Dr. Brett Rodgers, of Rodgers Center for Plastic Surgery, is Boise’s trusted expert for facial plastic surgery, tattoo removal, and allergy treatments. Dr. Rodgers is a double board surgeon in both Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery. He has been in private practice since 2001 and has provided many patients with expert care. Dr. Rodgers enjoys be-

ing a part of the Eagle community, which allows him to spend time with his family enjoying outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, boating, and dirt bike riding. The Rodgers Center for Plastic Surgery is located at 6077 North Eagle Road. Dr. Jeremy Hixson of Eagle Oral Surgery is incredibly dedicated to the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery, which is evident in his constant pursuit of education. Dr. Hixson has completed advanced specialty training and successfully finished his written (qualifying board) exam and will be taking the oral boards—the final step towards becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery—in February of 2016. Dr. Hixson has already been certified in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Advanced Trauma Life Support. He takes his profession very seriously and takes pride in treating every patient as if they were his family members. Patients can find Eagle Oral Surgery at 197 West State Street. As the city of Eagle has grown in recent years, its need for quality healthcare professionals has grown as well. Fortunately, a growing number of pharmacists, physicians, and other medically trained individuals are not only providing these critical services, but are becoming involved in the community.

Eagle Police Chief Patrick Calley
Born in Butte, Montana, the home of Evel Knievel, Patrick Calley has been making leaps in his career, but not over cavernous gorges. His father, George, was an FBI Agent assigned to the Butte office. The FBI transferred Calley’s family to Idaho in 1972. The fifth of six children, Patrick attended school in the Meridian School District and attended Boise State University. He also served in the United States Army Reserves as a combat medic. Calley joined the Ada County Sheriff’s Office in 1989. His duties have included patrol, jail, detectives, and administration. He is a graduate of Idaho Peace Officers Academy, the FBI Command College and Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command. Patrick Calley was named Chief of the Eagle Police Department in September 2014. We sat down with him to ask about his career and what it means to lead in Eagle.
EM: What are some of the most challenging issues in law enforcement today?
EM: Why did you choose a career in law enforcement?
PC: As a police chief, my leadership style is built on the many great leaders who have served before me. I hope to learn from everyone I have worked for. I believe in strong teams that are built on initiative, creativity and perseverance. I have learned from coaches, military leaders and teachers. I am inspired by historical leaders such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Coach Holtz and Coach Lombardi are part of my drive just as the coaches that impacted my life as a student athlete. The military heroes that come into our lives give me energy. I had the chance to call World War II veteran Gerald Kirkpatrick a friend and neighbor. Every teacher I have had remains in my mind guiding me with their lessons.
PC: As the son of an FBI agent, I always knew that law enforcement was a noble career. I knew that I wanted to work in public service. I explored a variety of careers that included emergency medical, nursing, and coaching. My first experiences at the Ada County Sheriff’s Office were so captivating that I decided on a career as a deputy sheriff. I said to my family, “When it is no longer a great challenge and stops being fun, I will move on.” Well, 26 years later, this is the most fulfilling and rewarding job. It was a calling, and it has been a privilege. Serving as the Eagle Police Chief is about as close to the Americana childhood dream as it gets. I plan on being here for the long haul.

PC: Police officers truly serve because of a strong desire to care for and protect others. With the national issues facing police and community relations, the Treasure Valley has the chance to be certain that we never allow our communities to slide on a slope of compromise that we may see on the national news in other metropolitan areas. We can hold higher expectations for our community that sustains our freedoms and trust.
EM: What is your leadership style, and who are your personal heroes?
EM: What can a citizen do to help the department?
PC: Sir Robert Peel [the early 19th century British Home Secretary who created the London Metropolitan Police who are still nicknamed “Bobbies” for him] once said that the police are the public and the public are the police. This is absolutely true. Have expectations of your own citizenship, be engaged and make positive impacts on other lives. Take care of your home, and look out for your neighbors. Want safer roads? Then be sure to drive safely. Be an example for others to follow. Always preserve trust in teachers, cops and all those that truly give to others.
EM: What advice do you give to new officers?
PC: If a brand new officer asked for my advice, I would say this: Give of yourself to others. Keep your family in balance so that when you are off duty you can truly enjoy the beauty and freedom your profession preserves. Keep yourself healthy and always move forward keeping others in your care and guard.
No mother of a sick child should suffer in shame and silence.
From the author of the viral essay, “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother” Winner, 2015 “Books for a Better Life” award
Read The Price of Silence today. There is help and hope.
EM: What are your greatest inspirations?
PC: I am inspired by my family. My children work so hard in their studies, music and academics. They are so much better than I was; that is a parent’s dream. Family time is spent enjoying home and garden projects, outdoors and supporting our children’s activities. I am not the only adrenaline junkie in the house. My wife Kirsten is an intense cycling and running partner. I only try to keep pace with her amazing energy. We love to camp, ski, bike, kayak and anything outdoors. I enjoy reading and studying history. My musical tastes span from classical to indie rock to golden country hits. My iPod play list is a buffet of music! I am huge college football fan! In the fall, I can be found anywhere there are multiple screens!
In paperback August 4, 2015. Available wherever books are sold. www.lizalong.com
EM: What do you like about Eagle?
PC: I admire Eagle for all that it brings to people. It is a beautiful town that has potential for vibrant growth. While all cities grow, not many can maintain their small town feel. Eagle has done that. We enjoy beautiful residential areas, open spaces to venture and businesses for exploring. These have been balanced with planning and a strong citizenship. Therefore we enjoy low crime rates and a\ true livable city. My service at the Ada County Sheriff’s Office has kept me here for the greatest part of my career. When our high school aged children graduate and fly away, we will likely end up here.”

An Idaho Inspiration By Chelsea Chambers PHOTOGRAPHY BY Cy Gilbert

When looking to find a place in this world, you often start with nothing and work your way up. The beauty about starting with nothing is that you have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. Jeff Smith may not have had much when he moved to Idaho at the promising age of 22; however, he never let that fact discourage him as climbed his way up to the highest point of his career so far—living in his own forested oasis at the end of Eagle Road, doing what he loves each and every day while making a lasting name for himself by sharing his experiences and passing his knowledge onto others.
forward with what would later come to be known as “agriscaping “and International Stone became a wild success. Shortly after the founding of International Stone, a retail store for the company was opened and sold to every state in the U.S., every providence in Canada, as well as seven other foreign countries.
Smith has always been an adventurer, seeking thrill and experience through whatever endeavor he’s found. Hailing from Ohio, Smith moved to Idaho to fight fires for the forest service. He was part of the hotshot helicopter crew, and from there went on to logging. With each new undertaking came multiple doors of opportunity, and Smith has never been one to pass up an opportunity. It is this mentality that has allowed him to become such a great success in nearly everything he does. The logging industry helped pave the way to the United Mining Corporation, which sparked one of Smith’s greatest accomplishments: International Stone.
Clifford Johnson, one of Smith’s long-time mentors, sought to landscape the area outside a Best Western in Mountain Home. Smith pitched his design, which included grandiose waterfalls and large, decorative boulders. Smith also had every intention to plant trees that, according to an environmental impact statement, would never be able to grow or survive in that area because it was too hot, too cold, and too windy. While the initial response was not what Smith had hoped for, Johnson decided to take a leap of faith and put Smith’s design into action. The result was incredible, and the hotel saw immense gains, leading to the construction of several more hotels. The supposedly “ungrowable” trees thrived with an efflorescent beauty and splendor. Johnson continued to mentor Smith throughout his lifetime, saying, “If it’s good for the community, if it’s good for the state, and if it’s good for you, then do it!” This statement is one of the main drives that has fueled Smith’s determination to achieve success.
Throughout his lifetime, people were always telling Smith that he was crazy for taking the risks that he did, and that he would never succeed with such lavish and extravagant ideas. When mining and accumulation first began for International Stone, Smith was no stranger to the disbelief of others. His peers did not think that rocks would be a fruitful commodity. Despite what he was told, Smith pressed
Currently, Smith spends his days tending to the 182 acre Twin Oaks Farms. He fell in love with the land when he first laid eyes on it. He was asked to plant trees for Ruby Basabe, who lived at the top of a large hill near the land. Again, the trees he wanted to plant were thought to be impossible to grow in that area. However, that had never stopped Smith before and certainly wasn’t going to now. The trees he planted grew immense

and beautiful. Barbara Cimmino owned the land upon which Twin Oaks Farms was born, and he worked with her on the property. Eventually, he took over stewardship of the farm and still maintains it to this day.
Let us guide you in the
right direction
Smith has many visions for Twin Oaks Farms, including sustainable farming, water development, “agriscaping,” habitat protection, youth development programs, and community involvement. Currently, the land is home to a wide variety of wildlife and agriculture. Smith also employs local youth with his Boots on the Ground program, which encourages hard work, education, and a myriad of pertinent skills such as ranching, farming, forestry, land management, horsemanship, and so much more. Vince Apodaca has been working at Twin Oaks for the last nine months and loves every day of it. Apodaca enjoys the variation in work and is constantly kept busy. “The farm gives you a lot of experience: sales experience, work experience, and people skills. It gives you the opportunity to show what you’re capable of.” There are also many community events held at Twin Oaks Farms throughout the year. Towards the end of the harvest, a corn maze is plowed, Halloween Land comes to life, and a Winter Wonderland emerges. Coming up on September 22nd is the second annual Tater Dash Mud Run—a 5k mud-laden course that promotes physical activity, health and wellness, and the aspiration to claim a second potato world record for Idaho.

Jeff Smith is an incredible citizen who, with continual drive and dedication, has shown that nothing is beyond reach. He is a firm believer that hard work will reap vast rewards, and that with enough motivation to step outside the box any goal can be attained. He is truly an American inspiration. It’s difficult to sum up the grandeur that is Jeff Smith in so many words, as he never stops moving and is forever on his way to achieving something more. His endless propensity for success and inspiring enthusiasm for life makes him fascinating, and an excellent role model for future generations of Idahoans. It is with a deep and boundless gratitude that we thank Jeff Smith for all of his hard work and perseverance to the grandeur of Idaho. Luckily, we’re sure that we will be seeing a whole lot more of Smith and his boundless potential. Smith is never satisfied, and he knows that he can always go a bit higher.

COMMUNITY
These Hands That Tie By Nicole Christensen Pettinger PHOTOGRAPHY BY Cy Gilbert
The wind rustles through the trees around you, sun meets skin, river current is steady against waders, and all that is on your mind is the steady rhythm of the fly fishing line. This has been a day you’ve been looking forward to for awhile now, one to just shut out the world. Idaho is home to some of the most renowned rivers in the Great Northwest, and Eagle features the newest fly fishing shop of Three Rivers Ranch. The shop is located in the heart of downtown Eagle at 60 S. Eagle Road and is run by owner Lonnie Allen’s children, Mary Seeley, and Chad Allen. Mary and Chad both attended Boise State University and love their community of Eagle. Three Rivers Ranch originated in the early 1920’s, and is now thriving into its fourth generation. TRR has been noted in the Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report as one of the “Ten Best Lodges in the World” and prestigiously named “Orvis Lodge of the Year”. TRR is licensed to guide fly fishing guests on more waters than any other outfitter. Fishing is possible year round in Idaho due to its abundance; “Esto Perpetua” is the state motto, meaning “let it be eternal”. The Ranch and all of its stores provide a first-class experience to anglers from all over the world, as we are known for our blue ribbon waters here. “For the discriminating fly fisher” the moment you step into the store, all senses are captivated. Spools of colorful line and premier rods regiment the walls, mesmerizing metallic reels catch your eye from across the room, an inviting table to hand-tie upon is found in the classroom basement, and 90,000 flies are on display throughout the three-story shop. Lovely

DeYoung artistry is intermixed among the exceptional gear. The store intrigues women, men, and children alike and either Mary or Chad can be found there. Everyone that works here has an attachment and profound respect for all that it encompasses. The children love the elevator and exquisite cascading glass chandeliers. A young boy selecting a gift for a party stops to appreciate the overhead piece of blown glass, which is artistically designed as a river scene. Daily opening its doors excluding holidays, the staff is completely inviting and knowledgeable. “Most of our clientele has been established out of foot traffic and strongly built upon our Fly Fishing 101 Classes for all ages. The first class is free. What sets us apart is our Customer Service. There is no such thing as a stupid question. This is a family environment, people start working and never leave,” Manager and Guide Nick Minor states with a smile. Nick’s refreshing demeanor sets one at ease, and he continues, “our head guide has been with us for 43 years, some for 30, others 25. That is the ultimate goal once you begin here. We have 25 guides, with most people booking the lodge one year in advance. We have a 93% return rate. Typically it is one guide per two guests. I have never had a client get skunked.” Nearby waters for anglers typically include: the Boise River and all of the Boise River tributaries, the North and Middle Fork of the Boise, the South Fork of the Boise, Big Wood, Owyhee, Big Lost, Payette, Salmon River, Clearwater, Silver Creek, Grande Ronde, and the Snake River. Best wishes on your next adventure in transfer of impulse.

LIVING
Spoiled By Amy Larson PHOTOGRAPHY by Cy Gilbert
Dog grooming business owner Melinda Carlson took a deep breath. Though she was typically far more comfortable around furry creatures than speaking publicly in front of a large crowd, Carlson was determined. When asking the Eagle City Council to have those attending the meeting in support of The Spoiled Dog Salon & Resort stand, there was an audible gasp. Another community matter covered by the press was on the agenda, yet three-fourths stood. The Mayor, a long-time Spoiled Dog client, stood, saying, “I guess that includes me.” In 2008, Melinda, burned-out surgical tech of over twenty years, had a premature, “surprise” baby, and wanted to work from home. Having groomed her own dog, and having once been a hairdresser, she apprenticed with a Boise groomer while her husband turned their Eagle home’s older shop into the perfect facility. “My only plan was to do something different, and be available for my family,” says Carlson. True to Carlson’s medical background, the shop was immaculate, and the grooming business grew rapidly. When customers asked if Carlson could recommend a place to board dogs, the emotionally-attached groomer with a nice, big yard kept pets overnight, until the yard filled with canines. The need for quality Eagle boarding was evident, and the search for a new facility proved difficult, since Carlson’s business focused on grooming, not boarding. She wanted to stay central for the grooming side of things. Finally finding a spot that worked was met with some resistance. A dog yard bordering an alley-way would “never” be in accordance with code, professionals told Carlson. After putting the idea aside for twelve months, Carlson then picked it back up, this time minus representation. She called the leasing agent and wrote a letter to the owner.

“I wanted to meet and shake hands before I’d take a ‘no’,” she recalls, “I wanted them to know who I was, and what I was doing.” When meeting face to face with the fire marshal, Carlson was told there was no problem with having a dog yard at the proposed location. Loyal customers wrote letters to local decisionmakers. On the night of the City Council meeting, Carlson’s constant, careful, and tender care of the animals paid off, with a crowd of clients supporting her cause. “We opened with the bang,” said Carlson, “and recently opened a separate 2,800 square foot facility devoted solely to daycare for dogs, leaving the main facility for boarding and grooming. As she watches her business top off, Carlson makes sure to give back, fostering for Boise Bully Breed Rescue and Idaho Humane Society’s IDAPI dogs that finish the programs but are not yet placed. “We get them all groomed and pretty,” Carlson smiles, adding that one of her proudest moments came from the presentation of a simple little plaque from the Humane Society, honoring her for being a foster parent. She says softly, “That just meant the world to me.”
