EAGLE CITY HALL GREETINGS AND FAREWELLS….
BY PATRICIA MINKIEWICZ
Eagle City Council Chambers was well attended on January 14 when new Mayor Jason Pierce was formally installed as Eagle’s elected leader. “I have lived, worked, and served here long enough to know we need to protect what we have for the citizens that call Eagle home.” Mayor Pierce will serve a four-year term to December 31, 2023. The City’s two elected first year Councilmen, Charlie Baun and Brad Pike, also will serve four years. They join current Council President Brad Pittman and Council member Miranda Gold who have two years remaining in their terms. Citizens are encouraged to go to Eagle City’s website to read all about their backgrounds and the details of their varied civic experience, along with photos of their swearing in ceremony which was officiated by City Clerk/ Treasurer Sharon K. Bergmann. www.cityofeagle.org/312/ City-Councilfeagle.org Preceding the formal Installation of Eagle’s new Mayor and Council members, many citizen attendees came forward and offered comments of appreciation and commendation to outgoing Mayor Stan Ridgeway and two Council members whose terms had expired, Stan Bastian and Jill Mitchell. Ridgeway’s leadership and the City Council had led the way to many positive accomplishments in the city.

A well-received surprise presentation was made to Ridgeway and all four 2019 Council members, by the local *CAIA leadership team headed by Shelley Brock. Each received an engraved wall plaque in recognition of their 2018 unanimous approval and passage of Eagle City’s Oil & [natural] Gas Ordinance: “A Win that Benefits all Idahoans”. The Ordinance was the first in Idaho to comprehensively address all the issues involved in accessing/ mining underground resources in the city. “ The CAIA and City of Eagle h ave attracted praise from the international communityand environmental groups for what they did with this Ordinance,” said Shelley Brock. The plaque includes a group photo taken on the day the Ordinance was approved, along with the quote: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ….Margaret Mead *Citizens Allied for Integrity and Accountability, Eagle, ID. www.integrityandaccountability.org. ¢

Legacy Lives and Continues to Serve THROUGH THE AMERICAN LEGION POST 127 In 1919, US Congress chartered and incorporated the American Legion. Today, as the largest wartime veterans service organization, the Legion is committed to mentoring youth and giving back to the community, advocating patriotism and honor. Orville Jackson, Post 127, located in Eagle, Idaho, contains over 130 veteran members. The post holds a particularly special place in honor of Orville Jackson, who joined the American Expeditionary Forces in 1917. Orville deployed to France and served as a combat medic. Returning from World War I a war hero, Orville moved to Eagle, Idaho. Orville passed away in 1984, but the site of The Orville Jackson Drugstore that he purchased in 1922 still stands on the corner of Eagle and State. American Legion Post 127, named in his honor, serves as one of Idaho’s thriving posts.

Danny Lowber, born and raised in Nampa, Idaho, initially joined the United States Air Force in 1972, serving four years during the Vietnam Era. He returned in 1988 as part of the Idaho Air National Guard and now serves as Chaplain for Post 127. His total time in service spans twenty-three years. Danny worked as an Administration Specialist in the Comptroller’s Office and later in the Personnel Office. Danny moved to education, helping others achieve their dream of completing four year and graduate degrees. By the 1970’s, officers required a college degree. Previously, a person could gain promotion in the field without a degree but would eventually need a degree to retain their officer status. Now retired, Danny continues to serve as Chaplain, helping those in need, including grieving veteran families and funerals. He also participates on the Honor Guard, presenting the American Legion and American Flags at parades and other special occasions. As a member of the Honor Guard, Danny also assists with the Wounded Warrior Project. Still a passionate learner, Danny continues to grow and challenge himself. He’s studying Spanish, taking lessons and participating in a study group. “This feels quite the stretch from my school days in England in 1977, where British Cockney warranted a translator,” he says. “I love history and was lucky enough to gain amazing study habits from my professor, Dr. G.
Barrett,” Danny says and then shares how he uses Barrett’s study method still today, seeking three versions of history for a singular historical event. One of those versions includes a personal diary, which helps pull away from any bias in biography or news. He also used this method as an Adjunct Professor teaching theatre at Boise State University for twelve years. “Out of 23 years, ten in a half were active day. My name was on the list to go to Bosnia, suitcase packed, and the colonel said ‘no.’ Told me that he couldn’t afford to let me go. I wanted to serve at the level. I feel I missed out some experiences and comradery in theater, in a war zone.” Though Danny had hoped to serve in combat, his military journey held other plans. “Life’s a journey, made of choices,” he says. “For example, when you go to the market – along your route – say you’re walking from the east, if you’d gone the west way, you would’ve run into different people. From the time you leave your house, the path you take determines the people you meet. Embrace these choices. This is life.” And it is. Danny served his country, helping others achieve their dreams and academic goals. He continues to serve, “Our Post stocks food at the Veteran’s home.” He nods. He smiles his generous smile. When I attend Post 127 monthly meeting as a Veteran, I sit near the back, and Danny leads a prayer, his voice soft and encouraging.

She served both in the Army National Guard and the US Army, active duty. Her time in service mostly consisted of administrative work and she found herself the only female in her unit, working with the Military Police, mainly with payroll, scheduling, and training. She married her husband, also active duty. After struggling to get stationed together as two active duty military members, Amber exited the military with an honorable

Amber and her family have focused on helping veterans, like serving at the Veteran’s breakfast, participating with the drill team and assisting with Reefs Across America. Her oldest son is a Combat Medic. Over the last 45 years, at least one male in her family lineage has served in the Armed Forces. “Living in Eagle, well, it’s much like the old neighborly military hug. People know each other and many of our neighbors are ex-military, and this offers a deeper level of connection and community,” she says, and then adds, “it’s nice being back home.” Idaho is one of those few locations that feels like home almost as soon as you step foot on her soil, hence the pilgrimage from other states to re-settle here. Many military families have relocated to Idaho, purposefully to find that smalltown, neighbor-feel that they once experienced in service. Eagle’s Council of Wisdom [a retired men’s group meets daily for morning coffee]
8:00 AM
BY PATRICIA MINKIEWICZ PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
A long, long time ago in year 2012 in a not so far away small town called Eagle, retiree Jack Bearden was sipping his usual early morning hot coffee at a family-owned Burger Den at 2nd Street downtown. A true people-person, Jack found daily morning coffee by oneself can become a drag over time. One morning Jack entered the Den and spotted a man sitting at a table, eating a light breakfast and appearing somewhat forlorn. Jack walked over, introduced himself, started a friendly chat and asked to take a seat at the same table. That was okay with the fellow, although it turned out he did not have the gift of chat. Regardless, Jack felt good about the experience and decided he would enjoy his early mornings a lot more if there were two or more to join him on a regular morning basis. In time, that is exactly what happened, and the small group of retirees became the Founders of the “Old Guys Coffee Group”. After six months, the early morning coffee group moved to venue #2 Rembrandt’s eatery on Eagle Road downtown. Why? Because the “Old Guys” liked to meet daily, but the Burger Den was closed on Sundays. Turned out venue #2 already had an early morning seniors coffee group. In only a short time the separate groups conferred and decided to join forces and move to a venue #3 McDonald’s eatery on Plaza Drive across from Albertson’s. The change offered a more quieter separate room daily featuring windows and more table and chair space to grow, which it did over seven years. The staff was supportive and supplied Nametags. Word got around and the membership limit of 30 older retirees was met and remains today. Men mostly, and women are welcomed. In the meantime, the combined coffee groups had decided to agree on a new name which was provided readily by member Scott Cleveland, and the “Council of Wisdom” was born. The mascot? An owl, of course. Several members chose to purchase caps and red polo shirts with the new name and logo and wear them at meetings and around town. Scott is said to have a “savvy mind” who chose to bypass retirement and continue to run an Eagle business named “4c Financial Group LLC”. He is “skilled in what he does,” even teaching a Smart Phone class to senior citizens. That said, he serves as the Council’s Financial Advisor and was elected to be Chairman of Communications (Emails). After seven enjoyable years with McDonald’s, a new daily venue was sought when the eatery closed down its interior in early February this year. A major interior remodeling project would begin and required two months’ time to complete. In short order, Eagle’s BanBury restaurant at the golf course became venue #4 and offered the Council a quiet, spacious carpeted room with a magnificent view. Nice. Most Wisdom Council members are married, aged 47 and up to 95 years. A diverse group, there are several former “captains of industry” as well as represented occupations as commercial real estate, car salesman, school teachers, tech inspector of race cars, small businesses, managers, a pilot, etc. Their total work experience after retirement was calculated to be at least 2,000 years. Founder Jack enjoyed his former job as Director of Attractions at Georgia’s popular Stone Mt. Park. His two children, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren live now in Idaho. Jack serves on Eagle city’s Historical Preservation Commission.

“COUNCIL OF WISDOM” WAS BORN. THE MASCOT? AN OWL, OF COURSE.
Eagle residents and retirees, Jack Bearden and Scott Cleveland. Eagle residents and retirees, Jack Bearden and Scott Cleveland.
Personable Ian Burnett is a retired fireman, rescue worker, developer, and moved his family to Idaho in 2012. His favorite pastime is cars & more cars. He says modern computerized motor vehicles have cut back the amount of unhealthy emissions to the environment. Ian serves on Eagle’s Urban Renewal Agency. Member Fred M., age 95, is a former “celebrity dentist to the stars in Hollywood” and he married one. He enjoys retirement in Idaho. Metallurgist Paul, also age 95, says his former profession determines which metals and alloys work together best for various kinds of construction projects. Musician and singer Dave Frizzi is a skilled performer and sometimes brings his guitar along to Wisdom gatherings. Tom Anderson from tiny Mackay City ID (“Mackie”) drives a new Corvette every year. His 2020 model is slate gray and was greeted at the dealership by Wisdom members upon delivery, referred to as an “unveiling party”. Mackay
City’s Rodeo trips are scheduled regularly and several wives choose to join along for those. On another note, Ian says, “We love our veterans who represent all military branches, and love the national Flag and our guns.” Caring about each other runs deep as well, and many shoulders are offered to lean on when sick, sad, or needful. Birthdays, illnesses, life changes are acknowledged. Former member Morris “Butch” Hull, a retired logger, died two years ago in his 70s and the Council arranged to donate a Park Bench to Eagle’s Merrill Park Field of Flags in memory of him. His widow shared her belief Butch “lasted two years longer than expected due to the camaraderie he found regularly in the Council of Wisdom.” Members agree they are a fun loving, friendly, sometimes comical group until someone gets serious about a need. Then it’s “what can we do and let’s get it done NOW!” Help is provided when a member needs assistance with repainting, repairs, handrails, car issues, and unofficial “taxi service” for doctor appointments, airport runs, groceries, errands. As to politics, such talks do arise occasionally at meetings, and Ian jokingly replied, “a few Democrats are Council members in the spirit of inclusiveness.” Jack added, “Never an argument, though, whatever the topic; just state how you see things.” Ian added, “Why do I participate in the Council of Wisdom? Not only for the conversation, but maybe I can make someone’s day a little better…..or someone can make my day a little better!!” ¢

MISTY TYME’S THE FORGIVENESS SOLUTION A step by step guide to let it go BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
To put it simply, Misty Tyme wears many hats. At the base of all her roles is one thing – forgiveness. As an Author, Speaker, Corporate Trainer, Certified Death Doula, Interfaith Reverend, wife, and mother of six, Misty has gained an incredible wealth of life experience and participated in some serious soul searching. She came to Boise to fuel her family’s love for the outdoors and be closer to her grandchildren and oldest son, who currently serves the Boise Police Department. Before she began her second career, Misty worked for medical device companies. Ready for a change and searching for career fulfillment led her to One Spirit Interfaith Seminary. Her journey
26 26
FAC E TO FAC E
into a deep understanding and explanation of forgiveness practices was prompted when her twin brother took his own life. Anyone who has lost someone knows the sadness, grief, anger, and overall hurt that can accompany death. Misty realized that she wanted to solve her own problem and that process started with learning how to forgive. She talked to rabbis, pastors, spiritual leaders, and everyone in between. The forgiveness algorithm was born of the countless conversations and research Misty conducted, and gives structure and guidance to an otherwise misinterpreted concept. Her background in the medical profession meant that she had a knack for identi-
fying processes. She wrote the algorithm on a napkin and the idea began to grow. Her book, The Forgiveness Solution, is a beautiful combination of life experience, stories, self-reflection, and most impor tantly – guidance. Misconceptions around forgiveness permeate our lives and prevent us from tapping into the true power that it can offer. You have the authority to heal yourself, create healthy boundaries, and learn from the experiences of your past. To forgive is not to forget. To forgive is to separate anger and pain, identify your expectations of yourself and others, and understand that some people have the will to change, but are lacking the skill to be successful at doing so. Which is one of many amazing ‘Mistyisms’ that are sure to change your life. Misty spoke very highly of the benefit that forgiveness has in hospice situations. She offers coursework that trains hospice providers how to facilitate forgiveness conversations at the end of life. Additional courses geared for anyone and everyone are available on her website mistytyme.com and include a completely free introductory course that outlines what forgiveness really means. Misty brings humor and lightness to life’s most challenging situations. She says that sadness slaps our hearts closed. When we find joy and laughter, we are open to receive healing knowledge. This perspective makes her a dynamic storyteller and a passionate professional filled with heart and a healthy dose of reality. Her mission is clear: to bring a forgiveness tool to a cynical world that is craving a way to let go of pain and anger. If you find yourself riding the waves of un-forgiveness you owe it to yourself to explore the work of Misty Tyme and find power in forgiveness. You can get your hands on her book at any major bookstore or on Amazon and her all her coursework and training material is available on her website. Forgiveness is the link between love and healing. The time to forgive is now, and you have the power to do so.¢

The Mouth/Body Connection More and more research has shown how important the connection is between our oral health and our overall health. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. After all, the mouth is the gateway to our body, bringing in nutrients and oxygen. Those vital ingredients are then sent to other organs to be digested, and distributed throughout the body. Poor oral health, like periodontal disease, can actually support or worsen other illnesses in the body. How? It helps harmful bacteria reach the rest of your body through your bloodstream. For example, it’s been shown that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to that’s just a start. Other studies have shown that harmful bacteria in the mouth can make a person more vulnerable to blood clots which can, possibly, increase the chance of a stroke; poor oral health may worsen respiratory illnesses because as you breathe, that harmful bacteria ends up in your lungs where it can wreak havoc like pneumonia and of an unborn child. The list goes on. In fact, 120 diseases can be detected through the state of your oral health. Which is another reason to see your dentist regularly. When you take care of your oral health you’re getting a head start on taking care of you. All of you. Brain

and promote overall wellness. Clients can choose a 25- or 50-minute session with an experienced Flexologist™. Each Flexologist™ goes through a rigorous training program designed by the world’s leading authority on stretching and flexibility. The result is a dedicated professional who can help you work through the best stretching routine for your body and your goals. “Your body spends its day trying to hold you together, restricting motion, tightening muscles, pulling you back in. StretchLab reverses this negative process, opening you back up with the newfound energy and freedom that comes from your body moving, working and feeling exactly the way you want it to,” Ely explained. “We have created an environment where we take the time to listen to your body and collaborate with you on your flexibility journey. Having an increased range of motion and properly balanced body will increase your performance not only in your physical activity but in your daily routine as well.” StretchLab is Ely’s ‘third act’ - though her love of sports and fitness started at a young age. After earning her MBA from MIT, she partnered with her father in a consulting business for startup companies in the telecommunications industry. In her spare time, Ely worked as a group fitness
instructor and personal trainer at the local YMCA. After moving to Eagle in 1998, Ely stepped back from the workforce to raise a family, volunteered for a variety of local non-profit organizations, and continued to teach fitness classes at several gyms in the Treasure Valley. After her youngest son graduated from Eagle High, she was ready to take on a new adventure with fitness in mind. After an extensive search of franchise opportunities, she found that StretchLab best fit with her desire to help people with effective fitness methodologies and a proven history of success. She opened the StretchLab Eagle location in November 2018 and the StretchLab Boise location in July 2019. When it came to choosing a location in Eagle, Ely was drawn to The Bridges at Lakemoor, a lifestyle-focused center. She believes that the development of centers like Lakemoor are an excellent option for businesses to make the most of the population growth in Eagle. “With so much of our lives now taking place online, it’s important to have walkable, amenity-rich mixed-use developments that embrace locally-owned businesses. It’s a win for the city, the landlord, the small business and all Eagle residents,” Ely noted. ¢ StretchLab Eagle is located at 2826 S Eagle Road, Suite 150 in Eagle. WILDLIFE & WATERCOLOR Local Artist Combines Love of Painting with Love of Nature BY ERIKA HEEREN PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
It has been a long journey to creativity for Eagle artist Julia Moran. Today, Moran has combined her love of the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest and her love of watercolor with magical results. Moran always had an interest in flora and fauna unique to the Oregon coast. But it was not until after she earned her degree in Zoology from Oregon State University that she found her true passion – watercolor painting. “I grew up in rural Western Oregon under the canopy of Douglas Fir trees. Surrounded by ponds, creeks, rivers, and coastal waters, my art has always been a reflection of those ethereal waters,” Moran explained. “In my teen years, I created abstract oil paintings, thinking of watercolors as outdated. Then in my late twenties while my daughter was napping I borrowed her watercolors. Now in my early thirties, I’ve also found a community in Eagle and the Boise area with a much-shared appreciation for art and nature.” Julia Moran Watercolor, Moran’s shop, was founded in 2018 and features a variety of items for purchase. You can find original paintings, prints, vinyl stickers, and a wide selection of beautiful gifts for the nature lover in your life. In addition to her online store, Moran can be found at various art shows in the Boise area, like Wintry Market and Eagle’s Saturday Market. What makes Moran’s art unique is the accuracy and detail she brings to each of her wildlife pieces, with just a touch of whimsy. Using her background in zoology and biology, she is able to bring a different perspective to each painting. She has a particular fondness for ocean life and enjoys sharing that love as her contribution to the local arts community in Idaho.

ART
“Even though Idaho is a landlocked state, people still feel a heavy connection to the oceans. And I see that affinity with people in Idaho anytime I attend a local event. They’re drawn to the whales, narwhals, fish, and more. Our lives rely on healthy oceans, and I love
how we still have that affinity from our landlocked state,” Moran said of her inspiration. In addition to vivid depictions of wildlife, she also does commissioned artwork, including homes and pets from photos. The one-of-a-kind pieces can be used for framed paintings, ornaments, vinyl stickers, and more. Staying true to her nature lover roots, Moran gives back by partnering with organizations that support environmental causes. Most recently, she contributed to a World
Wildlife Fund (WWF) auction to benefit the animals affected by the devastating wildfires in Australia. For now, Moran is excited about growing within the Eagle arts community. For the future, she also has aspirations of having her work featured in a nature field journal for other wilderness lovers. ¢ For more information about Julia Moran Watercolors, upcoming shows, and to purchase artwork, visit www.juliamoranwc.com, or follow her on Instagram under the handle julia.moran. watercolor

20 YEARS OF SUCCESS Michael Klaas | Knight Plumbing BY AMBER HENNING PHOTOGRAPHY NATE MINNEMAN
Eagle resident, Michael Klaas, has seen a lot of growth in his time in the Treasure Valley. A born and raised Idahoan, not only has he witnessed the valley boom through the growth of his own business, he’s experienced it himself. 20 years ago when Michael began working in the plumbing industry, he found starting a business had its challenges, from the beginning, his ethics guided his business model. When you are first starting out integrity is everything, especially when you are depending on word of mouth and referrals. It takes a lot to grow your business in a tight-knit community. Making sure you are able to treat your customers with honesty and respect, is more than just the right thing to do, it’s necessary for survival. With this sentiment in mind, Michael has done more than just survive. Despite multiple recessions and more than one or two setbacks, he and his business, Knight Plumbing, have thrived. It is no doubt that he has done so due to his dedication to quality service and passing that same ideology along to his staff throughout the years.
32
C LO S E - U P
Dedication and services are second nature to Michael, who joined the military after spending some time as a student at Boise State. Getting into the plumbing business, however, came like second nature to him, “Plumbing felt like a hobby to me. If I could make a living at the same time, why not?” At first, growth was slow. Starting as a one-man operation and simply building a reputation from job to job. Over the course of the next few years, the business began to expand all based on the principle of “Doing Work Right, The First Time.” In 2012, after meeting with another Eagle man, Blane Russell owner of Social Eyes Marketing, Michael began implementing digital marketing tactics and business over the next few years soared. Drive down the road today and you can see up to nine Knight Plumbing trucks out servicing the Treasure Valley all operating with the same principle that allowed Michael to grow from a oneman shop to a full-service plumbing company — do it right, the first time. The Knight Plumbing ideology reaches beyond just doing a good job and extends to the level of services each one of their clients feel. “We make sure that each customer knows, we think of their house like it is our house and that’s how we are going to treat it.” To the technicians that means more than just wearing booties on their feet and cleaning up after they are done, it means being honest and providing real solutions so people can get their homes back in order and get life back to normal as quickly as possible. At the end of the day, even though his company services the entire valley, Michael Klaas is proud to call Eagle home. “Eagle offers the best quality of living and that’s what Idaho is all about.” ¢

RESTORED NATURALLY In the business of altruism BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS
PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
For many of us, there are few things that cleanse the day like a nice hot shower, lathering up in your favorite body wash and letting the fragrances steam up around you. It’s a moment of pure bliss amid our fast-paced lives. Jacqueline Apsley started Restored Naturally in 2014, as a not-forprofit business. Prior to opening Restored Naturally, she had been creating products for herself and her family. “I have really dry, itchy skin and could never find lotions and creams that worked for me until I started making them,” Apsley told us. “I had begun to make hand lotion and lip balm for gifts for family members, friends and myself. The gifts were well received, and they encouraged me to make products to sell.” But Apsley went a step further. “I decided to start a business selling handmade products to support a local non-profit: JEM Friends at JEMFriends.org. They have a comprehensive program that helps aged-out foster youth with housing, education and life skills during their transition to independence. Every product has ‘Restored Naturally + Your Purchase = Restored Lives’ printed on it.” Beyond simply providing high-quality, fair-trade products, Apsley, her family, and Restored Naturally have devoted their business to making an impact on the lives of the underserved, helping to create a brighter future for so many here in the Treasure Valley. “We have many customers who have severe reactions and sensitivities to commercial products and they are so thrilled that they can actually use our products,” Apsley said. And for those like myself who are constantly plagued with dry, itchy skin, dermatitis, eczema, and other dermatological ailments, it’s an ongoing challenge to find products that actually work, rather than perpetuating the problem with overly-fragranced and unpronounceable ingredients. But luckily for us, Apsley—alongside her daughter-in-law Raimey, who has really helped push the business forward and has an incredible talent at formulating the products—have formulated a product line that not only works for sensitive and damaged skin, but also one whose profits go right back to the community. What more could you ask for from a local business? “I do have a rather funny story. A few years back, I had a gentleman show me his feet and ask me if our Heel Stick could fix them. They were cracked so badly that they were bleeding! He had tried many other products with no results. I assured him that our Heel Stick was formulated with ingredients that would indeed help. He was very skeptical, but he bought one in spite of his skepticism. He purchased on a Saturday, and I kid you not, placed an online order for two more on Tuesday. He has been a faithful customer ever since! There are many other customers who have had the same results with the Heel Stick. It is our top selling product.” When asked if she had anything to share with our readers, Apsley

explained, “We are committed to bringing high quality safe products to the consumer. We make every effort to use ingredients that are ethically sourced, sustainable, non-gmo and organic. Our packaging is made from recycled plastic. We are currently working on several exciting new makeup items and a new line of indie nail polish. Right now, we do most of our business at the Eagle Saturday Market, word of mouth, and online, but are hoping to open a retail/manufacturing location in Eagle in the future.” ¢ To try Restored Naturally products for yourself, visit them online at RestoredNaturally.com and on Facebook.

HEALING THE WHOLE PERSON Connecting waves for humanity BY REBECCA EVANS
PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
I sit, electrodes softly secured to my scalp and I wait. I wait to feel better, less stressed, less anxious, less time spent checking the locks on my doors at 3 a.m. Dr. Bottrell explains the procedure to me, “I can watch your neurofeedback, your brain’s activity, while we do this.” The “this” is IASIS low-dose microcurrent neurofeedback (MCN), a painless treatment using low-intensity transcranial electrical stimulation with electroencephalography monitoring (EEG). The process supports the Central Nervous System with self-regulation, helping to reverse issues connected to dysregulation. Veterans are high on the list of those suffering with dysregulation, mainly from Traumatic Brain Injury and/or PTSD. Though Dr. Bottrell serves a variety of clientele, she serves those who have served our country. “This is my way of giving back to veterans and first-responders for their sacrifices on our behalf,” she states. I watch the monitor, my brain patterns represented by colored lines zig-zagging across the screen. The lines scatter, merge, and finally, align. Dr. Bottrell explains that this is good. This is what we want. Our brainwaves should synch and come together. Stress, anxiety, trauma,
36
CO M M U N I T Y
I know, have taken a toll on my brain and I’m wondering what image my heart would show if there were a similar treatment. I feel only a tingling sensation and am hoping that tonight I’ll suffer less and sleep more. “Think of the dysregulated brain as a brain that is frozen, much like a computer freezes. This frozen state confuses brainwaves and IASIS MCN briefly stimulates the brain on a micro-level, allowing the brain to re-set or reorganizes, releasing those frozen patterns,” she says. The process is much like rebooting a computer, though with the brain, only the frozen and stuck patterns are impacted. Trauma and chronic stress interfere with the brain’s connections, and often this results in depression, anxiety, insomnia, substance abuse, and more. Though Veterans and First-Responders are often the population most likely exposed to PTSD, they are not the only demographic. PTSD develops after a person is exposed to a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, traffic collisions, violent attack, life-threatening circumstances, warfare, and more. As a psychologist, naturopath and ordained minister, Dr. Bottrell integrates the field of psychology with nutrition, naturopathy, and spirituality. “In medicine, we must approach the whole person. People and their health systems are not categorical, they are not divided.” Treating one area, like the brain, will “lift” the other areas. For example, improving sleep for those who suffer with insomnia with IASIS MCN, will help alleviate stress (emotional health) and improve concentration (perhaps financial or academic health) and lower anxiety (digestive health), etc. Her book, Living the Mystery (available on Amazon), covers her philosophy of merging mind, body, and spirit. “We are Divine Beings. One area impacts another. All areas of our mind, our body, our soul, infuses and informs the others,” she says. Dr. Bottrell is one of few certified for this treatment in America. I glance over top the computer towards the window and I swear, the tiny pocks in the window screen seem clearer, the background a bit lighter, and I blink to make sure. I tell her about my change in vision and am excited to report to her over the next couple of days, document my own mind-body response after just one treatment. I leave her office feeling cared for, more importantly, I leave with a renewed sense of hope. ¢

A QUICKER COMMUTE Three Cities River Crossing BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
The commute from Boise to Eagle is no small feat, especially around 5 p.m. Or 8 a.m... Or lunch time… As more and more people move to the Gem State, our daily driving times begin to extend, albeit a lot more quickly than we may have originally anticipated. With more drivers on the road, our streets are being stretched beyond their limits. Fortunately, people like Edward Sloan, retired Civil engineer and project manager, have plans to help ease the flow of traffic and keep the commuters moving. Sloan and his wife Sue have been living in Eagle for 35 years. They, along with their four sons and ten grandchildren, have created quite the life for themselves in Eagle, Idaho. Sloan’s background in civil engineering, security, and travel has given him a broad in-

sight on issues like transportation, and so Sloan has been pressing forward to help bring life back into a historic project to improve traffic flow—for not only Eagle, but Garden City and Boise as well. The idea for the Three Cities River Crossing project first came about in the 1960s and was introduced by Ada County. The concept was to create an additional intersection from Chinden to State Street, between Eagle Road and Glenwood. As we have all experienced, sometimes it’s a roll of the dice which route is the best to take, and sometimes—it’s neither. But road construction is no easy task, especially when the price tag for a road of this magnitude could be incredibly high. Nichoel Baird Spencer has worked with the City of Eagle’s planning department for over 16 years and is glad to see life brought back into this project. “Mr. Sloan has been having conversations with ACHD and the state,” and in doing so, has established a new momentum to get this project the attention it needs. “The City of Eagle thinks this is a really important project. Anything that creates more than a 20% decrease in traffic on Eagle Road and Glenwood is something worth considering,” Baird Spencer explained. And while a 20% decrease in traffic on Eagle Road sounds like a dream, the potential roadway is still far in the distance. Feasibility studies need to be conducted, along with environmental impact studies and traffic flow examinations. Baird Spencer hopes that these studies can begin in the 2020-2021 fiscal year through the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS). “The environmental impact studies that were done years ago didn’t show too much strain on the landscape. And once the initial disruption occurs, there it is not anticipated to continued impact to areas at the end of Eagle Island, unlike the on-going gravel extraction” said Baird Spencer. ¢
