TALKING POINTS BY PAT MINKIEWICZ

Eagle Mayor Stan Ridgeway on February 7th presented the annual State of the City Address to citizens at Eagle’s Chateau des Fleurs. He outlined the ways City Hall continues to be busy handling the challenges of dealing with rapid growth in the Eagle area, including providing services for all the acreage that was annexed for housing developments in recent years, with more such developments on the way. Commercial properties also have increased as a response to the growing needs of a local population that is forecast to be 30,000 next year. Mayor Ridgeway closed his upbeat speech with a presentation of the 2019 Eagle City Mayor’s Award for Community Spirit to Robert “Bob” Wright, a long-time city resident, businessman, and advocate for the local community. Bob and his wife Terri moved to Eagle in 1980 and soon after joined other partners in founding the Wright Brothers, a construction company as we know it today with offices downtown. Together, Bob and Terri raised four children in Eagle and “this year handed over the reins of the company to the next generation.” The Wright Brothers has played a major role in how the city looks, having built or remodeled many of central Eagle’s buildings and public spaces including the Eagle Library, Merrill Park, Heritage Park, the Winding Creek Building, Smoky Mountain restaurant, and so much more. Bob and the company continue to serve as a community partner and have supported the city by providing labor and equipment for events such as Eagle Fun Days, doing snow removal for those who needed help, and participating in the Adopt A Highway Program locally. According to the Mayor, the Eagle 616 Lions Club was initiated by Bob so that Eagle could advance some needed community programs, including the Eagle Veterans Program and related events. Mayor Ridgeway concluded, “Citizens and community partners know Bob as an advocate for Eagle and for his endless support of the community and the people in it. For these reasons I give to Robert Wright the Eagle City 2019 Mayor’s Award for Community Spirit.”¢ To read the complete 2019 State of the City Address, go to cityofeagle.org. ---------

The Mayor’s 2019 Award for Philanthropy went to businessman Shah Afshar of the Customedica Pharmacy in Downtown Eagle. His achievements will be featured in Talking Points in a future edition of EAGLE Magazine.

“GRILL DA D” L A NDS IN IDA HO

PC: PROVIDED BY GRILL DADS

EAGLE RESIDENT MARK ANDERSON BY BARB LAW SHELLEY

THE GRILL DADS HAVE APPEARED NATIONALLY ON NBC’S TODAY SHOW AND HAVE REACHED AS MANY AS 25 MILLION PEOPLE.

PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

NOT MANY PEOPLE CAN RIGHTFULLY CLAIM TO HAVE EIGHT, ACTIVE GRILLS ON THEIR PATIO, LET ALONE TELEVISION CAMERAS AND LIGHTS IN A GARAGE PRODUCTION STUDIO, BUT NOT MANY PEOPLE ARE AS ECLECTIC AS EAGLE RESIDENT MARK ANDERSON. THE SARCASTIC HALF OF THE FOOD NETWORK GRILL DADS DUO, THE MULTI-TALENTED MARK IS JUST BEING HIMSELF. How did Mark land on the Food Net work, a lifest yle T V net work? And, while we are wondering, how did east coaster Mark land in Idaho? The stor y is that he and his best friend of 20 years, Ryan Fey, who Mark says is the uninhibited, wacky half of the Grill Dads, worked together in the adver tising industr y before becoming the Grill Dads. They were passionate

15

“GRILL DA D” L ANDS IN IDA HO about cooking for dinner par ties, baby showers and barbeques with friends sometimes hosting as many 60 people. They did this without formal chef training. From there they turned their talent for promoting their clients onto their own concept, and launched themselves as backyard grill warriors who banter while demonstrating all the wonderful foods one can create with a grill. They did this while busy in their careers and parenting their children. Af ter months of creative planning, they created a trailer and posted it on a crowd funding site. “It was one of the most vulnerable moments of my life,” remembers Mark. “You put yourself out there. It would be embarrassing if the idea flopped.” Their idea did not flop. Money and enthusiastic encouragement star ted pouring in. At the same time, they submit ted their trailer to a producer of the Food Net work ’s Guy’s Big Projec t, a competition, reality T V series hosted by Guy Fieri, American restaurateur and an Emmy Award winning television personality. They were selected as one of two winners, rewarded with a full 10 episode season of their own show The Grill Dads. Their second season on Food Network was called Comfor t Food Tour. They were again able to take their love of cooking and food on the road, meeting outstanding chefs and eating delec table food as they went. The Grill Dads have also appeared nationally on NBC’s Today Show. Marketers talk about reach and frequency. The Grill Dads may have reached as many as 25 million people on the Today Show alone in addition to 24 episodes of T V in the last 14 months. “I am a Food Network fan boy,” declares Mark. “Friday nights with the Food Net work, that is how I learned to cook. The bantering with Fey while grilling is just who I am.” Mark is from an upstate New York Italian family who cooked and frequented neighborhood family Italian restaurants, but he never dreamed that he would cook on T V. He says he obsesses on a food type, reworking and cooking until he masters it. When it tastes better than a restaurant’s food, he knows he nailed it. For example he focused on biscuits for six months, before finally declaring his newly created recipe and technique the difference between good and great. His advice to other wannabe T V personalities and travelogue hosts: “Just go for it. Don’t doubt yourself.”

16

PC: PROVIDED BY GRILL DADS

Mark insists you can cook anything on a grill before revealing he cooks his entire Thanksgiving dinner on the grill. Or, in his case, it’s grills. He is also a whiz with a smoker. His wife, Sarah, notes that their backyard looks like a barbeque grill store. “Our focus is celebrating food and being dads,” declares Mark who is 43 and, with Sarah, has a four-year-old son. “We are the new dads. No more ‘60s Don Draper of Mad Men dads. Nowadays dads contribute at home. We cook, go to soccer games and enjoy our families.” Sarah has a quip that matches the fun of the Grill Dads: “Mark and Fey have been doing this show for twenty years, finally some cameras showed up.”

“GRILL DA D” L A NDS IN IDAHO

But to focus only on Grill Dads leaves out the other interesting things about Mark. After college he was a tour manager. He was an audio engineer for Maroon 5, a multi-hit, pop rock band lead by vocalist Adam Levine. He came with the band to Boise when they played at what later became The Knit ting Fac tor y. While here on tour, Mark hiked to Table Rock and floated the Boise River, never dreaming he would someday move to southwest Idaho. Mark also tour managed Jennifer Hudson and Cour tney Love. Af ter a life on the road in the music industr y, he became an adver tising executive. Over the nex t year he moved between Atlanta, Los Angeles, where he star ted working and cooking with longtime friend Ryan Fey, and Por tland, Oregon. When he and Sarah decided to put down roots rather than continue to state hop, they picked Idaho. He teases that he was glad that Por tland was his most recent residence so he can claim to be an Oregon transplant without mentioning the gig in California, thereby not irritating California-wear y Idahoans. He and Sarah purchased an existing Meridian business, UltraClean, a water damage restoration company for resi-

dential and commercial proper ties. It is a tangible, hands on business that helps people at a traumatic time. They offer water, wind, fire and mold damage repairs. He runs the day-to-day business while Sarah focuses on the marketing as part of the freelance creative work she does from home. Boise’s Ronald McDonald House charit y invited Mark to ser ve on their board recently. He jumped at the chance to volunteer his time for this worldwide charity that helps families stay together when an out-of-town, seriously ill child is hospitalized. He and Sarah were inspired to move to Southwest Idaho just for such oppor tunities. Mark points out, “Southwest Idaho is big enough to have all the comfor table city amenities, but small enough to allow people to build a real community through volunteer work.” Mark will find out by summer if The Grill Dads will be offered another gig on the Food Network. In the meantime, he keeps grilling and building his fan base on social media . ¢ Follow @thegrilldads on Instagram.

Kate Plaisted Girl in the Garden Goes to American Idol BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER & AMERICAN IDOL

26

I

daho native and Eagle resident, Kate Plaisted, has a voice capable of transcending anyone who listens to it to a higher level. The beat behind More Than Temporary is upbeat and motivational, a perfect way to jumpstart any morning, while the beautifully-sung lyrics speak directly to the soul. “I think we might be onto something good and extraordinary. So, let this story play out as it should, it’s only February.” The cadence in her voice sings sweet like spring sunshine, while the rhythm is enough to get you up and moving. Another song, Polaroid, is a must-have for any road trip playlist. “We’ll remember this ride. The world is ours to

enjoy. Tonight, we’ll freeze this moment in time, and save the memory in a polaroid.” The experiences that Kate speaks to in her music are relatable, allowing the listener to take their own journey, transported through her music. Forever musically inclined, Kate has been playing the piano since she was just six years old, and rather impressively we might add. This spurred her interest in other instruments like the ukulele and the guitar. But always searching for something more, she started singing about five years ago. After nearly a decade of playing, “singing along made the piano more fun!” says Kate. She began taking singing lessons to add a new twist to her piano skills, but she had no idea that singing would transform the direction her life. Her vocal coach recommended she participate in the local Star Idaho 4th of July Talent Show. She went for it, and ultimately won the contest. What she didn’t expect was for a musician in the audience of this small-town Idaho talent show to approach her to sing backup vocals on their CD. She loved her experience in the recording studio and this gave Kate the encouragement to participate at a talent showcase in Los Angeles. It almost seemed to good to be true—but shortly afterward, Kate was in Los Angeles, launching her music career further than she ever anticipated. “I grew up in a small town in Idaho. I never imagined that anything like this was possible,” Kate recalls. But LA wasn’t her last stop. While in California, Kate met various agents and coaches and, ultimately, flew to Nashville, Tennessee to begin recording her own songs. And over the course of seven days, Kate wrote (alongside a cowriter and producer) and recorded seven songs. The EP is titled Polaroid, under Kate’s artist name, Girl in the Garden. “We wrote the music and lyrics and recorded about one song a day.” The process required a huge amount of dedication and perseverance. Kate and her team worked tirelessly all day while in the studio. After Nashville, Kate made the trip to Houston, Texas, to audition for The Voice. She didn’t quite make the cut, but it didn’t break her spirit. She heard that American

Idol was coming to Boise for auditions and the opportunity was too perfect to pass up. “I wasn’t really planning on trying out for American Idol, but they were coming here, so I went for it.” And she made it! While the road to American Idol Live is a long one, Kate has the support, dedication, and aspiration to succeed in the music industry. And undoubtedly, no matter what happens, this experience has been incredible for networking and getting her foot in the door. With a voice like Kate’s, her success is practically guaranteed. Kate’s comes from a family of predominantly doctors and scientists, but regardless, a deep love for music runs through her veins. When asked what spurred her musical interests, she said, “It may sound cliché, but when I listen to music, it makes me feel such strong emotions. I wanted to do that for others. Plus, it’s a great way to spread ideas. One of the greatest experiences was when a woman came up to me and said that they were going to play More Than Temporary at their wedding. It was an amazing feeling.” Kate plays all over Idaho, and she advises other musicians or those interested in the industry to do the same. “Take every single opportunity that you can. Reach out to people. Write music with your friends, attend music camps.” Immerse yourself in the industry. “My first gig was just playing at the Boise Farmer’s Market on the street. And I still met so many people.” Kate has been seen at The Sapphire Room, The District Coffee House, Long Drop Cider, Dry Creek Merc, The Gazebo in Heritage Park, the Saturday Markets, and more. “I always wanted to do this,” says Kate, “but I didn’t know that it was even possible until recently.” But it is possible. From small-town Idaho to American Idol and more—Kate Plaisted is an inspiration to musicians, writers, and anyone who thinks that just because they are from a small town that they don’t have the same opportunities as people from larger metropolitan areas might have. And while Eagle, Idaho is not in the same industry-leading league as Los Angeles or New York, there are still vast amounts of opportunity.

28

Good luck on American Idol Kate! We are cheering for you! Kate has two upcoming shows in Eagle at the Gazebo in Heritage Park (May 18 and August 10), but keep an eye out for her all over town and on screen. Kate is proof that with enough dedication, doors of opportunity will present themselves to you. Both her story and her music are truly inspirational. ¢ If you want to learn more about Kate Plaisted/Girl in the Garden, visit her website at KatePlaisted.com or on Facebook—Girl in the Garden Music. BRAIN CONNECTION Change the world around you BY REBECCA EVANS PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

Snap. Crackle. Pop. Joints, over time, sound like the jingle to a popular cereal commercial. Between age, wear and tear, genetics, and, injury, many will seek treatment to alleviate pain and pressure in their joints, usually their spine, and often their lower back. Chiropractic care focuses on the body’s relationship between the spine and how the body functions. Alignment correction is one of the main services that chiropractic has been known. What is less known is how spinal manipulation and adjustment can change your brain’s interpretation of the world around you. As creatures of adaptation, our bodies, over time, learn to work around mis-alignment, learn to adapt to malfunctioning. The body will conform to survive. The brain connects, neurologically, to every joint, muscle, organ, tissue, and cell. When our body is out of alignment, the brain loses this connection, or the signal weakens, impacting our health. Chiropractic care is based on the concept that the body self-heals and has an innate intelligence, coordinating every action within our body

32

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y

and correlating with our environment. Our nervous system controls all of this. If pressure is placed on this system, it cannot care for itself. Through the relief of pressure on the nervous system, the body can perform, it can take care of itself. The weight of a dime produces enough pressure to cause the malfunction of a nerve. If that weight retains pressure on that nerve for six hours, the nerve will (begin to) degenerate. Chiropractic care is not about bone on nerve or joints out of whack. It is about pressure. Every provider offers unique approaches or techniques, and Dr. John Maltby specializes in locating that nerve interference and then, relieves it. He focuses on upper cervical care, zeroing in on the top two bones of the spine, where the brain stem lives. Any slight pressure in this location causes the most damage to the body. One of his early cases

with upper cervical care involved a patient suffering with severe knee pain. He adjusted her atlas and the next day, her knee pain vanished. It never returned. This is not magic. It’s science. Unfortunately, we live in a quick-fix society and most patients seek spinal adjustment treatment as the last resort prior to surgery, or after surgery has failed. We needn’t wait to the point of pain or discomfort or illness for care. Early intervention can change the way our brains function; enhancing our quality of life, reducing stress, and increasing mental acuity. Though Dr. Maltby specializes in upper cervical care, his patients vary, from babies to centenarians. He has worked with special populations, including those with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. His philosophy is to turn no one away. “I work hard to help each person who walks through my door.” The best approach to health care is preventative maintenance. Upper Cervical Care may be just what your body needs to operate at its optimum. You’ve heard it before: eat right, drink water, sleep well, reduce stress, laugh more, oh, and have your brain connect to your body so it can heal. ¢

The honor farm, or prison farm as it was also known, housed low-risk prisoners from the Idaho State Penitentiary to work off their debt to society. This farm was completely self-sustained; as the trustees worked, they produced enough crops, cattle and vegetables to feed themselves as well as all the inmates at the State Penn. With adequate quarters for up to 100 trustees at a time, the men lived there anywhere from 6 months to a year, bunking in a dormitory. While the prison farm was minimum security, and the men serving time were on their “honor”, there were still several men who decided it was worth it to walk away. These convicts, having no idea where they were off to, would occasionally stop off for

36

a drink on their way to freedom. This was usually short lived, as the bartender would recognize the men by their water-soaked pants; the waterline on their prison-issued jeans happened to match that of the Boise river’s. Knowing the Superintendent’s home phone number by heart, the bartender would call, informing the farm that “one of their boys” was currently sitting at his bar. Most of the men were found and brought back, with additional time added to their sentence. As the old Idaho State Penitentiary closed in 1973, the honor farm soon found itself closing as well. Unsure what to do with the now quiet buildings and fallow crops, the State of Idaho proposed to develop 135 acres of the old farm into a state park. Ten years later, in 1983, the public would welcome Idaho’s 26th state park. ¢

TALK BLOSSOM The fun kind of speech therapy BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS

PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

What’s the most effective way to get children to learn and be engaged? How do children understand and comprehend their world? There is no better way than through play! Sarah Landry quickly realized that play would be the foundation upon which she built her practice. Learning through personal experience as a child, Sarah has fond memories of her own speech/ language pathologist. Speech therapy is not an easy road, it can be challenging for both parent and child. But Sarah’s mission is to change the perception around speech therapy and ensure that the children have fun while learning! Thankfully, Sarah’s childhood experience was a positive one, “I just remember playing games because the speech/language pathologist did such a good job of embedding the learning into our activities.” That’s the principle upon which she built her own practice: Talk Blossom. Serving children in their home or daycare since 2017, Talk Blossom works with young children who have various speech and language disorders including: late talkers, articulation disorders, and Down

44

C LO S E U P

Syndrome. While each case is unique, Sarah’s program has helped so many children with speech and language issues. The testimonials on her website speak volumes to how effective her teaching style is and how Sarah makes learning fun for young children. When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Sarah said, “I love that I get to go into a child’s home and develop a bond with not only the child, but the whole family. It’s a privilege to share in special moments with families. I have been lucky enough to be present when a child says their first word. Being a parent myself, I love being able to ease some of the frustrations that many parents feel when they have a child with a communication delay. Being able to be the person that helps ease their daily struggles is very rewarding.” Sarah loves her job so much that she takes every challenge that comes her way as an opportunity to learn. When asked what she finds difficult about her profession, she responded: “I’m sometimes discouraged by the lack of information regarding the prevalence of speech/language delays and that there is help. I have made it part of my mission to inform parents about what typical speech and language development looks like, and when and where they should seek help.” Sarah’s knowledge and experience in the field make her an expert at speech and language development. As part of her on-going mission to provide education to all, she has included a downloadable checklist for speech and language developmental norms that can be found on her website at www.talkblossom.com/service-alt.¢ For more information about Talk Blossom and Sarah’s mission for playbased learning, visit her website at talkblossom.com.

MEDIA PUPPET Creating Fantasy With a Realistic Edge BY HALEY GRUGEL PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

Art comes in many forms and for Will Tebo his creative outlet lies in film. Will’s love for media arts started as a junior in high school where he would help direct and edit the school’s video announcements and since has turned into much more. Will now not only directs, but also produces, writes and animates his own short films. “My first real short film was an ambitious stop-motion about three animal friends who build a rocket ship for traveling to an alien planet” Will explained. Since then his work has changed into more fairytale and fantasy stories, where Will has truly found his niche. His fantasy stories often have some darker undertones, but include a positive message or some kind of social commentary. In regard to his films Will described the actual script as a very small part of a much bigger story. When asked about his creative process Will said, “While the creative process differs slightly with each project, I tend to brainstorm the characters first and then build the story and world around them.” While he has always been drawn to fantasy, Will is also very intrigued by how these stories can be used to share some sort of positive message or have a deeper social meaning. “As my style developed and I found I was drawn to creating dark

46

CO M M U N I T Y

fairy tales, sometimes with social commentary, I wanted the name ‘Media Puppet’ to reflect that, as well as hint to my love for stop-motion.” Currently Will is working on a prequel to his film The Circus Witch, a story about two step sisters, who have been physically altered, attending a show known for its magic acts. At the show the sisters find something very unexpected and in a surprising turn of events their night

out turns into a rescue mission. The Circus Witch is the first film to be published under his company Media Puppet. Prior to the start of Media Puppet in 2015 Will’s stop-motion film Lolly won Best Idaho Film at the second annual Idaho Horror Film Festival. When Will isn’t working on his film projects he teaches at Hall International Academy for Arts and Humanities in Eagle. “I’ve

been at Hall Academy for two and a half year, where I teach classes on Animation and Filmmaking. In the former I teach stop-motion and hand-drawn animation, and I like to talk about a wide variety of films from across history and different cultures to show what animation is capable of.” When not working he enjoys watching films and reading books for inspiration Will said, “in film, I’m particularly inspired by the works of Guillermo Del Toro, Tim Burton, Henry Selick, Peter Jackson, and Hayao Miyazaki.” Some big plans are in motion for upcoming work, aside from the prequel he’s already working on he also plans to create at least one short film based off L. Frank Baum’s series of Oz books. Will’s work, including award winning Lolly and The Circus Witch, can be found at Vimeo.com/MediaPuppet. Will’s logtime devotion to film has made him an all-encompassing producer, director, writer and animator who we’ll likely see many great pieces of work for years to come. ¢ Poster illustrated by Josh Funk. REINVENTION CONVENTION Tips for Success for Entrepreneurs and Business Owners BY PAMELA KLEIBRINK THOMPSON

PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

After trying other networking groups and not finding the coaching advice that she finds invaluable, Eagle resident Patricia Noel Drain founded Idaho Women Business Owners (IWBO) in 2012 “out of my own personal need to be with other like minded professionals that took their business seriously. Every month we have an Interactive Business Coaching Session, where we learn tools and techniques that help our businesses grow. Our featured member speakers add inspiration and wisdom. I literally would have had no business network if I didn’t have IWBO.” Two of the people in that network are Julee Huston and Rachelle Giles. Julee Huston, Business Coach for taking action on goals and dreams, based in Boise, was honored with the inaugural IWBO of the Year award in 2016. She says, “The IWBO has helped me find the determination and the courage to become the person I’m supposed to be. IWBO helped me hone in on what my true skills and passions are. The bonding that happens at our meetings is unique to other meet up groups I am a part of.” Huston reminds us to “Live with passion today!” Rachelle Giles, The Prosperous Hairdresser, a business coach for hairstylists based in Eagle, is the most recent Idaho Women Business Owner of the year recipient. She notes, “The IWBO taught me to recognize my full potential as an entrepreneur; that I am more than just a hairdresser, I am an educator, speaker, author, mentor, professional problem solver, and coach.” What she likes most about IWBO is “the community of support, a sense of belonging, the training that Patricia Noel Drain presents each month, and the ability to hone my skills as a speaker and educator.”

50

CO M M U N I T Y

Also a speaker and business mentor, Drain is taking the IWBO a step forward with the inaugural Reinvention Convention to be held April 26 and 27 at Spurwing. This conference is for businesswomen, entrepreneurs and those who are always reinventing, re-organizing and re purposing, and pursuing growth. Both Huston and Giles will be on the panel of five minute presentations-- The Power of Believing in Yourself. Other panels will be comprised of the authors in The Year of the Woman Is Now Volume 2 talking about why they chose that topic. Drain will be launching her book Discovering Your Core at the event and shortly afterwards will be starting a podcast called Biz Women Reinvent. Drain will be presenting “The Art of Reinventing You” at the Reinvention Convention. Notes Drain, “I called reinventing an art because the deeper you go inside and realize what it is you love, what gives you inspiration and excitement, that’s where the core is.” Drain will also present with Lulu Grace on “The Spiritual and Practical Side of Business.” Other presenters include Linda Binns from Portland (The Power Behind the Highly Sensitive Professionals), Rosemary Price from Phoenix (Living an Exuberant Life) and Lynette Bushman (Don’t Be the Best Kept Secret). With only 70 seats available, new friendships and collaborations are possible outcomes of attending. If you feel you could be doing so much more with your gifts and talents, or you want to be able to see the possibilities which could lead to more prosperity and creativity, you’ll want to attend the Reinvention Convention. “Its focus is to unlock your potential, and give you permission to play a much bigger game.” ¢

CACI WOOD-FIRED SICILIAN GRILL Bringing a Fresh Taste of Southern Italy to Eagle BY ERIKA HEEREN PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER

The latest craveable restaurant is now open in Eagle. From the owners of local favorite, Rembrandts, comes a new take on Italian faire at CACi Wood-Fire Sicilian Grill. CACi (pronounced KAW-chee) isn’t your average Italian restaurant. While choosing an Italian restaurant may conjure ideas of traditionally heavier dishes, CACi offers a wide selection of freshly-made lighter options. Principal owners CJ Cacioppo and Dale Willman, along with other local investors, wanted to take their guests on a culinary adventure around the robust and diverse world of southern Italy and beyond. “We are really focused on the cuisine of southern Italy and Sicily, it’s very cross-cultural. Sicily is a melting pot of different cultures from around the Mediterranean,” Willman explained. The menu at CACi is full of Italian-style favorites and some new offerings to excite any palate. You won’t find processed or canned ingredients in their kitchen; but you will find the fire-kissed deliciousness of grilled meats and vegetables for flavorful sauces, handmade pastas, and pizza dough made fresh in-house. Cacioppo and Willman are no strangers to the restaurant scene in the Treasure Valley. Three years ago, the two purchased Rembrandts, a successful coffeehouse

54

CUISINE

turned breakfast and lunch destination for the Eagle community. Cacioppo has more than 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry, and brings that experience to create a diverse menu to keep CACi patrons coming back for more. “We have a great deal of appreciation for the local community who have supported us and keep coming back. They’ve become like family to us. It’s truly a blessing to have people walk through that door and to have the opportunity to create those relationships,” says Cacioppo. Inside CACi, you’ll find a bright, old-world ambiance - perfect for a casual lunch, a romantic dinner, or just a gathering with friends. For those looking forward to spring and summer, the eatery offers a patio for al fresco dining and a lounge area around the fire pits. While the restaurant is new to Eagle, there are already a few standout fan favorites on the menu like the mouthwatering short-rib bolognese, wood-fire pizzas, and scallops. Stop in and enjoy the Sicilian polpette – grilled meatballs with house-made ricotta and “nonna” sauce (a freshly prepared light tomato/marinara sauce). Pasta fans won’t be disappointed, the diverse menu offers a wide selection in that area. Try Arancini (risotto) with parsley sauce, fontina cheese, and nonna sauce. Alternatively, you can try the Cacio Pepe, a spaghetti dish with olive oil, parmesan, and fresh pepper. Traditionalists can always enjoy hearty fresh spaghetti with meatballs and nonna sauce. If you’re feeling adventurous, the grilled polpo – or octopus - served with sun choke, mustard greens, pickled shallot and parsley sauce may suit your fancy. When it comes to the future of CACi and Rembrandts, Willman and Cacioppo have two main goals: “We want to present the best food possible for the community, and to provide the best customer service,” Willman explained. “We strive for continuous

improvement Рfinding what can we do to improve the service, what can we do to improve the food, and how can we best meet the needs of our customers.Ӣ Located at 1592 E. Riverside Drive in Eagle, CACi encourages reservations for dinner with walk-ins welcome. The also offer lunch on an open seating basis. Learn more about the restaurant: www.cacigrill.com.

HOME MANAGEMENT Providing Peace of Mind BY REBECCA EVANS

Home Management. This feels like a part-time job for those of us who own a home. Maintenance alone proves costly, but the scheduling often seems like a one-man air traffic controlling job. Executive Estate Management (EEM), established in Idaho since 2007, provides care and protection of property for residents, whether a large estate or a modest home. They are the only Certified Home Watch Professionals in the entire state. Home Watch, the newest edition of EEM, offers hands-on and personalized protection for homes. Home Watch proves effective thanks to EEM’s owner, Gordon Dunow, who provides regularly scheduled and comprehensive property inspections while homeowners are away. An important aspect of this service includes a computer-generated detailed report emailed to clients. If Gordon discovers any unexpected property mishaps, he immediately contacts the owner to determine the best solution. “I’m so sad when I hear stories of home-owners returning from a great vacation, only to discover costly property

58

HOME

damage,” says Gordon. Imagine preventative care for your home while you are gone, for example, that small leak gets repaired instead of flooding your hardwood floor. The Estate Management side of EEM helps you maintain a “house schedule” which could include carpet cleaning, window washing, lawn care, preventative maintenance, and more. EEM designs customized programs, specific for each client, and the service’s cost is based on the needs of the client. EEM doesn’t pause there; they’ve helped decorate Christmas trees, hang art, change smoke-alarm batteries, and pre-inspect homes prior to purchase which includes calculating the lifespan of the roof and placing accurate dollar value on your almost-new investment. EEM’s program satisfies that single human need, our most valuable personal asset and something money cannot buy: peace of mind.

Gordon realizes he holds a trusted and unique relationship with each client. Privacy is critical. “I’m in their personal space, caring for the one thing that they’ve invested a lot of time and money; their home. Their haven. I take it seriously.” EEM offers oversight of remodels and construction management. When they take on the responsibility of your home, they oversee vendors as well, ensuring each contractor/vendor is licensed and bonded and insured. Benjamin Franklin still said it best, especially when it comes to home care, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” If you’re interested in learning more about either the Home Watch or the Estate Management services offered by EEM, contact Gordon Dunow for a free consultation. ¢ Contact number: 208.867.1936 Email address: eemllc@msn.com Website: www.eemllc.us

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES IN IDAHO Educational information for academic success CONTENT BY SHANE PRATT, MSED., SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR AT ROLLING HILLS PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL

Not many people can rightfully claim to have #SchoolChoice. School of Choice is held every January, the goal is to shine a positive spotlight on effective educational options for children. Idaho supports educational school of choice for parents at the local and national level. What is School of Choice? School choice means letting parents choose the best education environments for their individual children. These options include:

60

E D U C AT I O N

• Traditional public schools • Public charter schools • Public magnet schools • Private schools • Online learning • Homeschooling Why School choice? Kids are unique and learn in different ways. Parents have the power to choose and provide the educational environment for their children to receive a challenging, motivating, and

effective education. As a result, student achievement increases. When children are in an environment that supports their learning style, better outcomes are the result, both mentally and physically. School Choice allows parents and families the freedom to choose the method of education that will work best for their children. It allows for meaningful decisions regarding how and where their children will receive their education, whether in the public system or not. It is based on the idea that all children do not learn the same way and may have different needs, interests, or strengths to develop. Finding a school that meets your child’s needs is critical to the academic success for your child. Here is what kids say about school of choice for their school, “my parents chose this school for me because I needed to not get lost in the crowd.” Some Public Charter Schools focus on Personalized Learning, others on STEM, or Montessori styles of learning. Each is unique and visiting these schools is a must to make the best decision. Call the schools for setting up a tour. Many Schools of Choice operate with open enrollment, but may have a lottery system to fill the seats at the school, based on demand. Usually these lotteries take place in February to April, prior to the next school year. There is open enrollment and dual enrollment options for your child. New opportunities are opening up for Idaho families to choose from, with on-line or virtual schools, private schools, and homeschooling. The on-line schools or virtual schools have specialized curriculum

to meet the needs of your child. Contact the school’s office and speak with a representative to gain understanding of the programs they offer. It just might meet your expectations. Idaho has support for parents with School of Choice coordinators to help parents navigate the educational landscape. www.sde. idaho.gov/school-choice. Michelle Clement-Taylor works out of the State Department of Education and can be contacted by email mtaylor@sde.idaho.gov. In addition, Suzanne Metzger is the coordinator with BLUUM, email smetzgar@bluum.org. School of Choice is a National movement to better the learning opportunities for ALL students. Idaho law makers and educational policy makers support School of Choice for all parents in Idaho. ¢

Pizza Hut

CACi Wood-Fired Sicilian Grill

Local owned, this restaurant has a rich history in the culinary industry from New York and LA. Be sure to start with a cup of their Creamy Fire Roasted Tomato Soup. This is promoted as their house specialty and once you taste the soup you’ll know why. The TNT sandwich is a beef tri-tip party in your mouth, and the Eggplant Portobello Baguette is equally as delicious.

Build a pizza that’s custom made for you. Start with your favorite crust, add all the toppings you want and just the right amount of cheese and sauce or pick one of our fabulous specialty pizzas. Whether you are gathering for a game or making it a lunch meeting, feeding a large group is easy with our affordable catering options.

A focus on the rich culinary traditions of Sicily and southern Italy is what sets CACi (KAW-chee) apart from other local Italian restaurants. At CACi, we use all-natural ingredients in our meals, our sauces, our pastas, and doughs, bringing an eruption of flavor to this classic Sicilian culinary experience. Our entrees are complemented by a broad selection of Italian wines to meet every palate’s tastes.
