talking points WHY IDAHO? WHY EAGLE? A UNIQUE LOCATION FOR A UNIQUE BRAND By Matt Rissell, CEO of TSheets “Why Idaho” It’s a question I’m asked on a near daily basis. “Why Eagle? Why not downtown Boise? Heck, why not Salt Lake, Portland, or Chicago?” It didn’t take long for me to realize that what they’re really asking is, “Why would you build a tech company in the decidedly nontech hub of Eagle, Idaho?” My answer? Why not?! When my co-founder and I first started working on TSheets, we were told that a tech company could never survive outside Silicon Valley — we were told we were wasting our time and money building our business in “rural” Idaho. Well, we thought otherwise.

While we continue to grow 100% year over year, right here in Eagle, we’re doing our part (alongside other Idaho tech companies and community organizations) to attract and develop an extremely talented and dedicated workforce to the greater Boise area. And it’s working. Idaho was recently ranked the No. 3 state with the fastest job growth by MSN Money, and Boise just as recently landed at No. 7 on the list of the next top ten cities for tech jobs by FastCompany. Our new building, located in the developing Lakemoor business complex, is a symbol of our business growth — both literally and figuratively. We’ve officially outgrown our old space, but we’ve also outgrown the old paradigm that a tech company can’t thrive outside of Silicon Valley.

We had a vision — we pictured our future employees sitting on the banks of the Boise river, a fishing pole propped between their feet. We imagined them hiking or biking along the greenbelt on their way to work or during their lunch break. FESTIVE CONNECTIONS Local Garden Designer Shares Her Bond with People and Plants that is as Natural as the Atmospheres She Designs

ecia Carlson clearly remembers where her inherent connection to gardening was first cultivated. Growing up, she spent many a day working and playing in her extended family’s gardens located in Homedale, ID and Vancouver, WA. Her family’s gardening devotions focused on vegetable gardening and fruit farming and Kecia fondly notes there was no shortage of mentoring or wisdom with her grandma and great grandma at the helm. “I remember these women as young, strong and sophisticated. Their planning and care of the gardens led to a wonderful harvest each year that was celebrated with aunts, uncles and cousins. We weren’t sports or other leisure activity people, gardening was our `activity,’” recalls Kecia.

Those early days proved relevant to Kecia’s future by igniting her passion for plants. But it wasn’t until college, while studying business, that she realized her talent for drawing and affinity with plants could be united into a dream job - garden designer. Soon she enrolled in the Harvard Graduate School of Design and began studying landscape architecture. After completing the program, she decided to use her new skill set by designing a landscape for her own home. She bought land and began designing. “It was a little different in that the house had to work with my priorities for outdoor living and gardening vs. the other way around,” says Kecia amusingly. She then found herself helping her boyfriend Dave with his company’s (Think Green Inc.) landscaping projects; then friends started asking her advice on creating outdoor spaces. Before long, these experiences, along with her ongoing plant obsession and education, gave her the confidence to start Madeline George Landscape and Garden Design. This name was inspired by Kecia and Dave’s favorite storybook characters.

As such, Kecia has stocked Madeline George with a delicious array of fresh home decor, including unusual cut greens, and “green” gifts for holiday festivities. The entire nursery is stylized for the holiday season, providing ideas to anyone who stops in. Undoubtedly, if visiting on Friday or Saturday, you will be drawn to the blazing firepits upon arrival. But step deeper into the nursery and discover the conservatory with loads of fresh boughs, garland and exquisite custom wreaths. Next, stroll the greenhouse to find specialty conifers, table-top trees, wonderful smelling citrus and unique tropicals. When you walk into the gift shop, fun, living gifts will pop into sight. Interesting succulents and vessels, pre-forced bulbs, such as amaryllises wrapped in wax, airplants, stone troughs and terrariums are all at hand. “Many of our gift offerings appeal to those that want to add a handmade touch to a gift. We call it `make n’ gift,’” says Kecia. “You can design your gift, pick up all the necessary ingredients and assemble in our workshop. We’ll provide any advice you may need along the way!”

As a small garden design firm, Madeline George worked with residential customers, although occasionally a public/ commercial space opportunity came along. Over time, as Kecia and Dave’s lives became more intertwined, as they were married, the couple decided to become business partners. Through its partnership with Think Green Inc., Madeline George began offering design and build contracting, servicing customers from an initial consultation to a finished living landscape.

Madeline George’s Holiday Open House is Thursday, Nov. 25 through Monday, Nov. 28. Classes on creating succulent plantings, terrariums, wreaths and even growing indoor edibles are happening. ouses are popping up in the cities of Eagle and Meridian at an astonishing rate. I can remember when the corner of Linder and State Street was considered the outskirts of town. A drive through the intersection today will still make you feel like you’re approaching a more restful locale, but look closer, and you’ll notice several new neighborhoods nestled within the groves of trees hugging the Boise River. One can assume local builders are enjoying the opportunity to showcase their talents and help homeowners realize their dreams in a custom build. I recently spoke with the Clint Rogers, of CK Rogers, to learn more about the process of creating a custom home from start to finish. When Clint partners with a client to remodel or build a home, his considerations go beyond the logistics and materials required to get the job done. When asked about a few of their more recent projects, it was evident CK Rogers builds more than just a structure to harbor people and possessions; they construct the actualization of a lifelong dream. “It’s a product of 20 years of dreaming,” said Clint, of his custom home project in Eagle’s riverfront community, The Shores. “The house is designed around the fact that they want their family to come home.” When I asked Clint about the motivating factors behind most remodels and custom builds, he said lifestyle was the number one reason people elect to work with CK Rogers. Clint comes from a family with generations of building experience, and he too grew up working in the industry. After a brief sojourn working in corporate America, Clint founded CK Rogers in 2002 and began offering design, remodel, and building services to clients. Clint’s projects range in both size and scope, but all of his jobs have one thing in common: the owners are looking to create a particular lifestyle for themselves. Empty-nesters, parents of fur

babies, and busy families all look to Clint for help in constructing the ideal home for their way of life. When I spoke with him about some of his more memorable builds, it was clear that the services provided by CK Rogers deliver more than a new or refreshed home. Clint’s team builds lasting relationships with their clients, keeping in touch through holidays and special gatherings. With Meridian, Idaho being one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, the valley is full of homeowners looking to construct or remodel their dream home. CK Rogers remodels around 40 homes and builds 10-12 per year. The remodels CK Rogers performs are less about flipping a home for a high return on investment, and more about establishing a way of life for homeowners. Master bathroom remodels will take four to six weeks when clients can allow consistent availability of their home. Kitchens are typically more labor-intensive and run six to eight weeks, on average. These timelines vary based on the nature of work and whether owners need to continue living in their home throughout the remodel. Custom home building timelines range depending on the scope, size, and design scheme of each home. As a general guideline, Clint told me homes worth $500,000-$750,000 normally take about six to seven months, those homes worth $750,000$1,000,000 require eight to ten months, and homes above the million-dollar mark will take closer to a year to reach completion. The Reindeer Ramble, a 2 mile walk/run, begins at 4:15 pm outside in the parking lot of Creekside Bible Fellowship. Participants will receive a jingle bell and can walk or run with their families and friends onthe marked course, ending downtown in time for the Christmas tree lighting. The Reindeer Ramble costs $19 and includes entrance to the cookies and cocoa sampling. Festivities at Country Christmas at Heritage Park in downtown Eagle include a tree lighting ceremony at 5:37 pm, a kids activity tent where local businesses will host activities and crafts (open from 1 to 5 pm), and of course Santa will be there. Now Caleb (9), Ian (7), and Peyton (4) all love to paddle on their own and are really good at it. “What I love most about paddle boarding is that it is something I can do with my family and it’s also a great workout.” “I’ve been a craftsman with an eye for quality and a bit of an inventor my entire life,” states serial entrepreneur Jason. He worked for his dad’s construction company starting at the age of 7 where he pulled nails from concrete forms and nailed down shingles on roof tops. The entrepreneurial spirit is strong in Jason’s family. His sister Michelle owns Marie Lynn Floral and his brother Jeff owns The Grass Co. and Crossfit 2C.

“Be creative and don’t give up,” advises Jason to other entrepreneurs. Hydrus launched a crowdfunding campaign to expand their manufacturing facility at the Eagle Industrial Center and to bring Hydrus to national and international attention. PRACTICE MAKES PRACTICE Eagle Yoga House Founder, Susan Dusho on Life, Yoga and Finding Balance

or Susan Dusho, yoga practice is not about perfection—it’s about balance. In June 2012, with her husband Dennis’s help, Dusho realized a dream of sharing yoga’s benefits with her community when she opened Eagle Yoga House. Four years later, the studio has expanded its offerings to engage everyone from athletes to octogenarians. “Physical practice is just a small part of yoga,” Dusho told me as she prepared to teach her favorite class, a yoga workshop targeted at anyone who wants to try yoga or work on poses in a safe, nonjudgmental environment. “Everyone comes in because they want to feel better, and that’s a good reason to walk in the door. But we really come to our mats to turn off and unplug all this stuff that’s going on—everything we are juggling--in our lives.” A lifelong athlete, Dusho found blissful stillness and serenity in yoga. Shortly after taking her first hot yoga class, she signed up for teacher training in 2011. Now, Eagle Yoga House offers about 30 classes per week, from 5:45 a.m. through 7:15 p.m. The classes range from upbeat, music-driven hot Power Hour flows to more restorative, relaxing evening classes for people who need to calm down and unwind. Susan’s workshops, designed both for people who have never practiced and for practitioners who want to improve technique with a

more interactive experience, are offered several times each week during the day and evening. “I know some people can feel intimidated when they try a hot yoga class for the first time,” Susan explained. “People were telling me, ‘I’m not flexible enough.’ That’s not what yoga is about. It’s more about creating openness and flexibility in your life and in your mind.” Susan always loved sports. Born in Delaware and raised in Washington by “two amazing parents,” Susan was involved in cheerleading and played varsity tennis. In college, Susan embraced an athletic lifestyle, studying exercise science. She taught aerobic dance at Washington State University in the 1980s. In college, she also discovered body building. Susan competed professionally for years, but she discovered a dark side to the sport. Like many athletes in sports where body image is highly prized, Susan developed an eating disorder. She has been living in recovery from bulimia for more than 25 years and shares her story to help others overcome the stigma. “Having an eating disorder doesn’t mean you are less as a person; it stems from depression, and it’s treatable,” she told me.

After the birth of her third child, Susan discovered yet another sport: running. With the demands of child-rearing, running fit her busy life. She could put her baby in a jogger and hit the pavement. Running also provided stress relief from an increasingly difficult first marriage, which ended after 18 years. Now, Susan uses yoga to manage her stress. “Any woman going through a divorce or dealing with anything hard in her life can really benefit from yoga practice,” she said. With two other yoga teachers, Theresa Price and Rebecca Holland, Susan now volunteers twice a month at Eagle Middle School, where she works with special needs children to teach them yoga. “It’s that after lunch time of day when you are really tired and want a cup of coffee,” she laughed. “But every time, I feel so good! The students are so appreciative!” For Susan, yoga has infused life with meaning and purpose; she still has plenty of goals to accomplish before she attains “that great savasana in the sky.” “Flexibility and openness of your body is just a perk, the icing on the cake,” she said. “Learning how to calm down and be in the moment is what matters. Yoga teaches you to accept your circumstances and to embrace your possibilities.”

Fittingly, these two highly successful business professionals have chosen Eagle, Idaho as their fertile ground. Why Eagle? Ken, who has been in the technology arena for 35 years and is currently in Solution Sales with Cisco Systems, sees Eagle and the surrounding Treasure Valley as ripe for high yield growth in business in general and technology in particular. Trish, a financial professional, wholeheartedly agrees. In fact, it was Trish who introduced Ken to their latest business venture as investors with Keiretsu Forum, the world’s largest angel investor network. It can move very fast, and someone spins off, and then is gobbled up by someone else.” Investing through Keiretsu Forum allows individuals to invest in start-up companies. Trish serves on a committee screening companies to help determine their eligibility and explains that these companies have been vetted and due diligence is done; however, this type of investing is still very risky. When asked, “What would you say to someone interested in this type of investment?” Ken responded, “They must be prepared to lose everything they have invested.” In other words, “I wouldn’t take out a second mortgage or tap out a retirement plan.” Trish concurred, “If you can’t afford to lose it - don’t make that bet.” That said, the Traders have recently made their first company investment. So, why take the risk? Trish stated, “He (Ken) really understands this area that his investment company is in.” This investment seems a natural fit for the Traders. As investors and advisors, they are using their years of business experience along with their “hands on” approach to help cultivate the growth of this start-up company. With a glint in his eyes, Ken said,

”so, to me, that’s the exciting part. It’s to be part of something that is starting out as an idea and a concept and to help to build it into something that becomes real and tangible and makes a difference.” The Traders are equally as passionate about their personal interests. Although leisure time can be hard to find, Ken enjoys working in his garage on his kit car project or creating music on the guitar or his electronic drum set. Trish enjoys organic gardening in her raised beds, oil painting, and cooking to entertain friends. Trish is also busy with the planning committee for the Veterans’ Day Parade. The couple met in the Air Force while stationed in Germany, so this mission is dear to her heart. Their thirty-two year marriage has led to many adventures living in states from the east to the west coast. Now that they have settled in Eagle, the Traders often travel to the Bay area to visit their daughter and son-in-law or enjoy spending an evening at the Sapphire Room in Boise taking in the local music scene. Most of all, however, they seem to enjoy relaxing on their patio, savoring the changing hues of the Virginia Creeper and the picturesque views of pastoral Idaho in their own backyard.

Those first participants gained confidence in their artistic skills and learned how to market their product and anticipate customer demand. They learned about setting goals and the steps needed to achieve them, and they felt how rewarding it can be to make something with their own hands. As time has passed, the “Made by Kids” aspect of Holiday House Boutique has not only become a great teaching tool, but has also become one of their shoppers’ favorite features. STAFFORD SMITH Young Racer Nets Individual, Team Accomplishments

or race driver Stafford Smith, the call came about a month shy of his 18th birthday.

It was time to strap into a car with more than half again as much power as anything he raced previously. The event was the NAPA Auto Parts Wildcat 150 at Tucson Speedway May 7, the third of 14 contests (three road tracks, 11 ovals) in the televised NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. “It was a lot of fun. I had never been on a track that big and had never been in a K&N car on race weekend before,” Smith said. “I never had that much power before … It was definitely an experience.” Compared to some smaller cars, the 650-horsepower K&N setups at first feel powerful and fast-accelerating, but less nimble and harder to see out of, the Eagle High graduate said. A couple dozen nearby competitors add to the challenge. Auto racing is a family affair for Smith, who said lessons he learned as a member of the Patriot Motorsports Group team in 2016 were as important as any of his race finishes as a driver. An 11th at Tucson, a 7th at Meridian and some other solid results complemented his work in the Garden City shop and on the nondriving crew at races. “You realize how important working with a team is,” Smith said. “You can’t do it alone.” On the Patriot team of about a dozen people, he is among the five or six who work in the shop regularly. There is plenty of work to go around, as teams typically field multiple cars in a race. Smith started nine K&N races as of early October, finishing almost all – a team accomplishment. A freshman in Boise State University’s mechanical engineering program, he says he’s especially interested in chassis design and how the “entire car” works.

Smith said in 2017 he aims to race the entire K&N series “and help wherever I can with the team” while working toward graduation in the next four years. He is slated to get behind-the scenes experience at higher levels of NASCAR competition. “As long as I am surrounded by race cars and the atmosphere, it would be a good day in my book.” Smith started racing go-karts at 12 in the Boise area, competing locally before traveling to larger kart tracks elsewhere and then getting into racecars. His father, Kent Smith, has been involved throughout, most recently as crew chief and advisor with Patriot. The family moved from Canada about 12 years ago. In the K&N series, “cracking into the top 10 is a strong advancement in his first year with the budget we have, especially since he did not come up the traditional stock-car route,” Kent Smith said. “We are building a team, and he drives for it. We’re very happy with the progress the drivers had and the team had.” The group is working to bring a high-caliber karting track to northwest Eagle. “It’s an opportunity for a wide range of people to get involved in the sport and all its merits, and help the community at large,” he said.
