MAKING EAGLE ARTSY AND COLORFUL

COMMISSIONING YOUR LOCAL ARTISTS

Those whom commissioned artwork historically did so to show wealth and prestige – now it’s more common to commission an artist for a painting of your pet or favorite place. One of the largest commissioners is cities – to revive or add to the community vibe, as they did with the art traffic boxes in Eagle.

During interviews some of thee artists, we discussed what local artists they admire, and if they remember what their first piece of art was.

Bonnie Peacher

A very upbeat person by nature, Bonnie expresses her work as realistic, optimistic, and very colorful. ‘I look for the positive themes in everyday events or places. I look for beauty in life. I agree with Pierre-August Renoir that “There are too many unpleasant things in life as it is, without creating still more of them.”

Bonnie’s traffic box is a little girl at a tulip festival. Her delicate touch captivated the artist as well as her overall demeanor.

Being an advocate for artists and once the president of BOSCO, she can’t just name one artist she loves. “Lisa Cheney for drawing and painting, Jill Storey for pastels, and Sue Latta for sculptures – all talented in their own field.”

“It’s hard to remember my first piece of art, as I have been creating since I was a child. One piece I still have is a portrait of Beethoven. It’s a pencil drawing. I guess I have always been drawn to depicting people.”

13 /60 NOV.DEC | 2022 | VOLUME 15 | ISSUE 6

Don and Crane Johnson

The creative married duo work on many projects together. Both imaginative minds work together to inspire meaning and purpose.

The bluebird, also a photograph of Don’s incredible work was captured on the bluebird trail near Fairfield, Idaho on the Elma Goodman Mountain off Bennet Mountian Road. If you want to see a plethora of bluebirds, this is your 2023 summer excursion.

The traffic box of the aspens was a photograph by Crane, turned quilt, which was displayed for two years at the United States Embassy in Africa – called the Bow River Aspens Quilt. Also, very profound now that scientists are discovering that aspens have stopped reproducing due to animals eating the germ seeds.

Don and Crane love the local work of Kate Masterson, a local painter that has a very distinctive style. They highly recommend you view her work. When asked, “What was your first piece of art?” neither can remember and hope others have forgotten as well.

LOCAL ARTISTS

Monna Kay

A very grounded individual, Monna’s art represents freedom of expression, experimentation, passion, and a commitment to continue to grow.

“The wide-eyed expressive cow can fill you with the joy of the simple things – laughter, pleasure, surprises, and abundant blessings. I have people laugh and cry with emotion when they view my work and it reminds them of a certain person, time, place, or situation”, says Monna.

Zella Bardsley is her favorite artist. “She has a wonderful imagination and is not afraid of trying new things. She makes wonderful things out of items that others would throw away and she is not afraid of what others think. I am always in awe when I see a new work by her.”

“I made a piece of pottery, a vase, that contained a lot of texture and I fired it blue. I sold it because I was moving and I’ve always regretted it. The second piece of art I created was called – Self Portrait. I was getting ready to paint from some pictures I had taken and I sat down to tie my shoes. I was wearing old jeans and a shirt with paint on it. I was instantly attracted to the folds in the cloth, the bright colors, the lines in my tennis shoes, and the fact that this was just there. I still have it.”

CREATING SPACES YOU LOVE

GIFT GUIDE

We’ve all heard the adage, ‘Home is where the heart is.’ So much more than just four walls and a ceiling, home is where we live and love, where families gather and memories are made. It’s where we work, play, and rest. At Dwell Home Co. they took that adage with the utmost seriousness. And for Jamie Batson, it has grown to become her passion.

“You know that question children are often asked? ‘What do you want to do when you grow up?’ Well as a kid, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do but I found myself increasingly drawn to interior design and home decor over the years,” Jamie shared. “When the time was right, I saw an opportunity to venture out on my own and do something I’m passionate about. Now, through the products and services we offer at Dwell, I and my team have the pleasure of helping people create spaces in their homes that they love and want to spend time in.”

Dwell’s focus extends beyond the home into office and other personal and professional spaces. It’s about surrounding yourself with what brings you inspiration and gives you comfort.

Jamie and her team are always apprised of the latest trends and for this holiday season, they’ve noticed a shift, “from the traditional reds and greens to more neutral tones for the holiday season. While we’ll still have some pops of red and more traditional decor available, customers will notice a strong lean toward gold, cream, emerald-green, wood tones, and black. We just can’t get enough of this look! “

Step outside of the gift box this season and check out Dwell for everyone on your list and to create the perfect holiday party! Check out our gift guide for more ideas! Popular items include cozy throws, delicious smelling candles, centerpiece vases/arrangements, and a wide selection of host and hostess gifts.

THE EAGLE THEATRE COMPANY BRINGS THE WONDER OF STAGE TO TOWN

As a life-long lover of theatre, it’s no small wonder that Deborah Hertzog became one of the co-founders—alongside Beth Bertulis and Vicki Walch, each equally passionate— of the Treasure Valley’s latest artistic endeavor: the Eagle Theatre Company (ETC). Together, through a grassroots effort, enthusiastic ETC board members are bringing the wonder of the stage to Eagle.

“After over twenty years of living in Eagle, several members of the Board and I had watched the city grow and expand. Most of our board members have had their own experiences in community theater organizations all around the country and we had the idea that if other places could support a community theatre, then we were sure Eagle could too,” shared Deborah. “We knew the benefits that a theatre could bring to our community—whether on the stage or in the audience—and were optimistic that residents would agree.”

And right they were! After a pandemic-induced pause in early 2020, in September 2021 the five board members shared their vision for a community theatre at a Roundtable Discussion held at Eagle City Hall and received much interest and support. The group of board volunteers grew to eight and they set out to make their dreams a reality—to build

a strong organization that included becoming a 501C3 nonprofit, launching a charter membership drive, and bringing live, quality theater to Eagle.

“One of our greatest successes has been finding a home at the Eagle Performing Arts Center (EPAC)! EPAC is a ballet school with one of the studios capable of being a Black Box Theatre. I met with Director Liz Keller to discuss possibilities, attended their performance of Nutcracker that was performed in the Black Box, and soon we had found a home! Our three community gatherings have been held there and we’re very excited that our productions will be held in the EPAC Black Box Theatre.”

The group looks forward to their first production, coming to life in January 2023, featuring “An Evening of Two One-Acts.” One of the productions will also participate in the Idaho Association of Community Theatre’s state festival in February. In the meantime, stage preparations and fundraising are ETC’s primary goals.

Deborah would like to remind our readers, “There’s a place for everybody in community theatre! On-stage, backstage, or in the audience! We are excited to bring this opportunity to the Eagle community, in our own back yard!”

If you are interested in learning more about the Eagle Theatre Company or want to know how you can get involved, visit them online at eagletc.org. Keep an eye on their website for upcoming events, fundraising information, and volunteer opportunities!

A BETTER LIFE

HOW FAITH BROUGHT TWIN SISTERS TO IDAHO

Idaho calls to many people—the fresh air, wide open spaces, and bustling urban areas make it the ideal place to raise a family, start a business, and find adventure. For the Esfandiari sisters, coming to Idaho was a move made purely on faith and the trust that something better lay ahead. And, in fact, that is exactly what happened.

Sara Esfandiari and Soraya Meija Esfandiari came to the Gem State from Yorba Linda, California nearly half a decade ago. Annual road trips to visit Soraya’s Idaho-based in-laws planted the seed but faith was what inspired the move.

But before Idaho, and even before California, the twins and their family sought to escape the mayhem of the Iranian Revolution. And like many stories, tragedy and hardship often precede our true paths to happiness and are marred with challenge and uncertainty.

“We are identical twins born in Iran, in the city of Tehran. Our family moved to the U.S. during the middle of the Iranian Revolution,” Soraya reflected. “Ayatollah Khomeini and his religious supporters had recently overthrown the existing government and seized political power. Hundreds of thousands of people had their lives turned upside down. Our grandfather was the “Minister of Interiors” to the Shah of Iran. He was brought to the U.S. on a political asylum.”

“Our immediate family was in search, like many others, for a plan to escape the chaos. We were leaving our home, our family, our wealth, our friends, everything we held dear—all because our country had been persecuted by religion gone wrong.”

“We were about 8 years old when we faced many challenges to get over to the U.S. and we truly believe

that God had protected every step. We arrived at LAX with 5 suitcases and our big dolls. We spoke very little English.”

As the twins and their families stood in these uncertain spaces, they remained open—to a new country, a new religion, and to what lie ahead for each of them. Rather than allow the barriers of newness to define what they would become, Sara and Soraya plunged into their new school—a private Christian school across from where they lived—to open doors they never thought to open. And this faith, this trust in their paths is what brought them here today.

Active in their church and their communities, they enjoy camping and exploring Idaho’s beautiful natural spaces, yoga, and reading. The sisters and their growing families all live in Eagle and love being able to see each other whenever they want. They no longer live in fear of persecution and look to their past challenges as steppingstones to the amazing lives they now lead.

Looking at the average food served each day in local schools it is no wonder this generation of children are expected to live shorter lives than their parents. The average heavily processed, greasy, and sugar filled school food is not proper fuel for children’s bodies and minds.

In a three-part series we will look at how significant improvements in school district accountability, kitchen staff education, funding, and parent involvement

could enable schools to serve healthier meals to student and improve the worsening obesity epidemic.

The CDC claims that obesity related health conditions are among the leading causes of preventable death. It also states that in the U.S. 14.4 million individuals between 2-19 years old are considered obese. With the rise in consumption of processed and unhealthy foods comes the rise in obesity and health problems for the nation’s children.

SCHOOL
FOOD AND THE OBESITY EPIDEMIC – PART 1

According to the CDC, between 1963 and 2018, childhood obesity grew from around 4%–20% in 6–11 year olds, 5%–14% in 2–5 year olds, 4%–21% in 6–11 year olds, and 4%–22% in 12–19 year olds. Another study just published by the Journel of Pediatrics found around 16.2% of children who did not have weight issues when they entered kindergarten in 2010 were obese by the end of fifth grade.

As the rate of childhood obesity in the U.S. continues to increase, we must care for the health and wellness of the next generation. By not providing each student with nutritious food at school, schools are worsening the obesity epidemic.

On the West Ada School District website, you can view the meal options for elementary and secondary students.

Online menus for high school students show breakfast options like: Fat Cat Scone, Pop Tarts, Muffin Tops, Mini Cinnis, chocolate milk and Maple Madness Waffles. Lunch options include “stuffwich,” pizza rippers, cheeseburgers, stuffed cheese breadstick, chicken nuggets, Uncrustable sandwiches, and chicken & gravy.

Online menus for West Ada elementary schools have similar options: Pop Tarts, Mini Cinnis, Bar ZZ Birthday Cake, chocolate milk, and Raisels. These sugar-filled options are not healthy ways to fuel a child for a day of learning. Beans, since they are a legume, are even considered a vegetable in lunch options to cover nutrition requirements. Cheeseburgers, sloppy joes, corn dogs, pizza, chicken and gravy, chicken nuggets, and stuffwiches are lunch options throughout the month.

While not exhaustive lists, these menus show many highly processed food options served to students. These examples reflect issues at public schools across the nation.

A national health and nutrition examination survey, using nationally representative data from What We Eat in America (WWEIA), found that consuming large quantities of added sugars increases one’s risk of:

Weight gain

Obesity

Type 2 diabetes

triglycerides

Unhealthy blood pressure

Hypertension

Stroke

heart disease

A distinct correlation was found between the amount of ultra-processed foods consumed and the dietary content of added sugars. Ultra-processed foods contain excess ingredients like salt, sugar, preservatives, chemical additives, oils, and fats. They also may include additives to mimic the flavor of healthier, minimally processed foods to trick consumers into believing that what they are eating is good for them.

This study suggests that because almost 60% of calories and 90% of added sugars consumed in the U.S. come from ultra-processed foods, limiting these foods in the U.S. diet would be highly effective in reducing sugar consumption. The study encourages replacing ultra-processed foods with minimally processed and freshly prepared foods including fruits, nuts, whole grains, and vegetables.

In the coming months we will also explore the huge role parents play in teaching their children about healthy eating and providing a strong nutritional foundation. The series will end with a look at the barriers faced by schools in being able to provide healthy food that students will eat. It will detail one amazing public school who is actively doing everything within their power to make the change to healthy, made-from-scratch meals, and discuss how parent involvement is necessary to push the change into action.

Schools, parents, and legislative authorities must work together to encourage healthier choices for children if we are to battle this local and national health crisis. Healthy alternatives must replace unhealthy options throughout schools in the U.S. to help reverse the growing obesity epidemic in our nation’s children.

ALCHEMIST COFFEE

Walking into Alchemist Coffee is like stepping into a new world. Out of the depths of the dark forest emerge intensely golden lights and the earthy smell of roasting coffee. Geometric cubes dance around the tables and the crow emblem makes itself known across the rugs and walls. People sit at small wooden tables, sipping slowly their steamy cups of espresso. Stress seems to melt away here. Everyone is at ease, like they’re exactly where they are meant to be.

“When we were looking to start and create this new brand we diligently researched and sought something unique that could be universally used to accomplish the vibe/nuisances we were looking for,” shared Tyler Freeman, Alchemist Operations Manager. “We are passionate about being different.”

Tyler, alongside Kris Price, has been in the coffee business for more than a decade. They’ve started other coffee roasting companies and have lived abroad to learn more about other coffee cultures. Over the years, they have grown quite passionate about the art of coffee.

“Our roaster, Jesse Fairgrieve, has an extensive background in coffee and is in constant education to further his knowledge.”

Oh, did we mention they serve alcohol now?

Not only do they have homemade concentrates, freshly concocted kombucha, and delicious coffee but now you can relax and unwind with a tantalizing cocktail and a toasted club sandwich. Experience their holidaythemed drinks like the Fallchemist Cold Brew with maple spice and caramel sauce or the Oat Milk Cacao Mocha topped with pumpkin whip cream. While the classics are always available, their seasonal drinks options are everchanging, which will keep you coming back month after month.

There’s a lot to look forward to for Alchemist Coffee. “We are currently building two projects right now that will open in 2022. Alchemist Outpost located in Cartwright Ranch in the Boise foothills will be a large Cafe/Pub concept. It will transition from a Cafe vibe in the morning to a full-service pub in the evening,” said Tyler.

“Alchemist Plant Pub will be opening at the end of the year as well in Downtown Boise next to Western Proper on 6th Street. This concept will be Boise’s first full plant-based Pub. We plan to open in the morning as a quaint cafe that only uses alternative milks to make coffee drinks. We will transition into a fullservice pub that will be serving scratch made plant based vegan dishes.”

Keep an eye on their website alchemistcoffee.com and social media channels (@alchemistcoffeeroastingco) for the latest news and updates from the Alchemist crew.

There’s a new game in town for the local meal prep industry. Clean Cuisine by Gina has been slowly making a name for itself through word of mouth as the hottest new elevate meal prep delivery service in Eagle. I was lucky enough to try it out after being enamored with their beautiful Instagram photos. I was able to interview Gina and was pleasantly surprised that there is so much more to her food than just the taste.

CUISINE

Gina D’Orazio Stryker is a local girl from Challis, Idaho. She learned her love of cooking at an early age from her grandfather, a well known Boise chef. As a spunky 17-year-old, she hopped on an airplane and traveled to Florence, Italy to study cooking. After a detour in the film business for several years, she decided to settle in Colorado to raise her family – two sets of twins! Still, her love of cooking always called to her. She began using her knowledge of culinary nutrition to provide nourishment for wellness retreats, while flying all over the world as a private chef for Aspen’s elite.

Lucky for us, Gina decided to move back to her home state, bringing her 20 years of culinary experience with her. Her menus are heavily influenced by the Mediterranean diet and functional medicine. She strongly believes that “nutritious” shouldn’t mean flavorless. Using unique spices from around the globe, she creates dishes such as saag paneer and pad krapow. She has playful, creative treats such as huckleberry black garlic mascarpone ice cream and almond butter truffles.

Gina’s focus is to always source ingredients seasonally and locally. She has close relationships with local farmers and ranchers. You will faithfully find her at the Boise farmer’s market every weekend, and you won’t find preservatives on her menu. Every bag comes with a printed list of ingredients. Every dish is gluten-free and veggie forward. There are plenty of options for vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores alike. After eating Gina’s food for the last month, I noticeably feel better and have more energy. I never get bored because each week is unique.

You can feel good about eating Clean Cuisine by Gina because it is completely sustainable. Every dish comes in a glass or bamboo container that can go straight into the oven, freezer, or microwave. The following week they pick up the empty glass, sanitize and reuse it again. No plastic containers to throw away. I asked Gina about her choice to use glass containers when no one else was doing it, she said, “It’s so vitally important we pay attention to our footprint in the world. Food tastes better out of glass. It’s a lot more work, and more expensive, but I believe it’s well worth it.”

If you love fresh, beautiful & delicious food, check out her website cleancuisinebygina. com. Order by Sunday for delivery Tuesday from 3pm to 7pm.

Zompers

Eagle’s very own fun makers

There’s a phrase that we’ve all heard before. It likely occurred sometime before the age of 12, when we were with friends or cousins. There were undoubtedly shrieks and cackles of laughter involved, and it was probably on a holiday or other group gathering.

For myself, it seemed to always occur when we were sprinting, full speed, from the upstairs bedrooms to the backyard. Energized by the promise of an ultra-bouncy trampoline, nerf guns, and snowball fights, my cousins and I would full-speed dash through the kitchen on Christmas while our parents labored over the spiral honey ham. We’d be rushing to the door, skidding across the hardwood floor, when one of our parents or grandparents would yell, “Quit playin’ around! You’ll break something!”

We’d pause and slow down, but only for a moment before we returned to our pursuit of playtime.

These moments of play are integral to the proper development of children and are what transform us into efficient and well-rounded adults. And while I’m sure my grandmother wasn’t telling us not to play, but perhaps she was alluding to not playing in the kitchen on Christmas.

Kevin Keep, owner of Zompers LLC in Eagle, understands the power of play and strives to bring its benefits to the people of the Treasure Valley and beyond.

“What lead me to the toy industry was the desire to create affordable products that are of great quality at

affordable prices,” Kevin said. “With so many single parents in the world of today, we see the struggle not only to provide for their children but also the ability to get them cool gifts that can last and be enjoyed by the children as well as the Big Kid in all of us.”

Kevin and his team at Zompers create products in a variety of ways, including the Suddy Buddy bath toy which they developed from scratch. “It is more than just a toy to make bubbles, it will be a complete line of products for in the bath and out of the bath. It will have its own comic strip as well as short cartoons that will launch late 2022, early 2023. We also offer many other items that both our domestic and international teams work on creating and modifying to meet our client needs.”

Other available toys include Zomballz (the “softest, squishiest ball there is!”), Z Blasterz, Z Wheels, and Splatter Blasterz, among a myriad of other fun and bright toys for kids of all ages.

Kevin attributes much of their success to his team of employees, who have years of experience in the industry and are able to quickly adapt to the changing needs of their growing business and customer-base.

“The future for Zompers is exciting!” Kevin shared. “With Suddy Buddy getting into full swing by next spring we are excited to see what is going to happen. We have HUGE plans for Suddy Buddy as well as our other brands like Balance Bike, Pure Hypr Audio and Zompers Toys. Our goal is to not only be in over 20k+ stores by the end of next year, but also have a successful online store.”

Zompers products can be found in a variety of different stores across the nation, including Albertsons, Kings, Safeway, and United Supermarkets.
