NATASHA KRAVCHUK
from Eagle’s kitchen to national fame
12/52
M AGAZI NE
In the heart of Eagle, a humble food influencer, recipe developer, and YouTube star named Natasha Kravchuk has been making waves in the culinary world. Her journey from a Eagle resident to a nationally renowned figure is as inspiring as her delicious recipes. This fall, Natasha Kravchuk achieved a remarkable milestone when her debut cookbook, published by Clarkson Potter, a division of Penguin Random House, was released on October 3rd. The book, filled with delectable recipes, has soared to the #2 spot on the New York Times Bestseller list, a testament to her unwavering dedication to the culinary arts. Natasha’s impact extends far beyond her kitchen, as she’s been gracing national television screens, including a recent appearance on Good Morning America. Her book tour is drawing large crowds, with lines wrapping around the block to catch a glimpse of this culinary sensation. Natasha’s achievements don’t stop there. Barnes & Noble has recently named her cookbook one of the Best Cookbooks of 2023, cementing her status as a
culinary icon. But, what makes Natasha’s story even more special is her deep-rooted connection to Boise and the Eagle area. Eagle is not just a place for Natasha; it’s a cherished home. In her words, it’s “safe, family-friendly, and still has that warm suburban feel.” The area’s parks and wide-open spaces provide ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, from hiking to mountain biking, and the stunning landscape adds to the charm. She even shares that they take their annual family Christmas photos along the Boise River and greenbelt in Eagle. The excellent schools and proximity to Boise make Eagle an ideal place for Natasha’s family to live. It’s a community where they’ve put down roots and, in Natasha’s words, “kept them grounded.” Natasha’s interaction with her community is heartwarming. Every trip outside, whether to the Village at Meridian or local shops and grocery stores, becomes an opportunity for her to connect with her fans. She particularly enjoys engaging with the friendly folks at the Costco sample stations, which often lead to delightful conversations.

Natasha proudly reflects on how living in Idaho has allowed her to maintain a normal and grounded life. She values spending time with friends and family, actively participating in their church, and focusing on serving others. Her humility shines through as she describes how she’s strived to keep her blog and brand low-key, allowing her to be relatable to her audience. Even with national recognition, Natasha and her family continue to embrace the simplicity of life. They recently shared the joy of their book signing tour stop at the local Boise Barnes and Noble with their children. Her kids had the unique experience of signing books, and the day ended with a humble dinner at Chik-fil-A and a moment of gratitude. Behind Natasha’s incredible journey stands her husband, who has been her unwavering support system since the beginning. From their humble beginnings in 2009 to the present day, he has worked alongside her, handling camera work, photo editing, and media management. His dedication and self-learning have allowed them to maintain high-quality content, even exceeding the capabilities of a typical production crew. This dynamic duo continues to strengthen their bond and build their culinary empire side by side. Natasha and her husband are a testament to the power of unwavering support and shared dreams. In Natasha’s remarkable journey from an Eagle resident to a nationally celebrated culinary sensation, one thing remains constant – her deep appreciation for her home town. It’s here that she and her family find solace, build connections with their community, and continue to lead an inspiring, down-to-earth life, all while sharing their love for food with the world. Natasha’s success story is not just about culinary excellence; it’s a testament to the power of community, family, and unwavering support.

PERFECT PARMESAN ASPARAGUS Serves 6 to 8
In my opinion, asparagus doesn’t need much fuss in order to really shine. After all, you want to taste the natural sweetness of the vegetable. The key is to cook it just right— until it’s crisp-tender and vibrant green—and to keep the other ingredients simple. In this case, it’s a sprinkling of Parmesan that makes a delectable, cheesy crust over the asparagus. My son and I are always going after all the little browned bits of cheese on the baking sheet! PRO TIPS & TRICKS
INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
2 pounds asparagus, rinsed, dried, and ends trimmed (see Pro Tips & Tricks)
1. Place an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 400°F.
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil ½ teaspoon fine sea salt ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2. On a nonstick, rimmed baking sheet, arrange the asparagus in a single layer. Drizzle the oil over the top and roll the asparagus to coat. Season with the salt, garlic powder, and pepper and toss or roll again to coat in the seasonings. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, until the asparagus is tender but still crisp. 3. Sprinkle the Parmesan evenly over the asparagus and return to the oven for 2 minutes, just until the cheese is melted.
½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese
4. Transfer the asparagus to a serving platter and serve immediately (so the asparagus doesn’t wilt) with the lemon wedges (if using).
Lemon wedges, for serving (optional)
• If you don’t want to fuss with peeling the ends of your asparagus, a trick I learned years ago was to just snap off the ends. The asparagus will naturally break between the tender stalk and the tougher, fibrous end. • If you don’t have a nonstick baking sheet, line a regular baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
CLASSIC GREEK SALAD Serves 6
This recipe has everything the perfect salad needs: plenty of fresh ingredients, lots of texture, a variety of flavors, and a little something for everyone. That way, if your kids are like mine and want to pick out the bell peppers or olives, no big deal! They’re still getting plenty of veggies. I particularly love this in the summertime served with pretty much anything off the grill, but the dressing is flavorful enough to transform even wintertime tomatoes and cucumbers. DRESSING
SALAD
¼ cup red wine vinegar
2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved (or 1 pound garden tomatoes, chopped)
1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves 2 garlic cloves, minced or grated ¾ teaspoon fine sea salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 English cucumber, sliced into ½-inch-thick half-moons 1 bell pepper, any color, stemmed, seeded, and chopped 6 ounces feta cheese, diced (about 1 cup) ½ cup pitted Kalamata olives, halved or roughly chopped ¼ cup thinly sliced red onion
DIRECTIONS 1. Make the dressing: In a medium bowl or resealable jar, combine the vinegar, oregano, garlic, salt, and pepper. Add the oil and whisk or cover and shake vigorously to combine. Set aside. 2. Make the salad: In a large bowl, combine the tomatoes, cucumber, bell pepper, feta, olives, and onion. Just before serving, add the dressing and toss gently to coat. Serve immediately.
15/52
PRO TIPS & TRICKS • Some Greek salad recipes call for the cucumbers to be seeded first so that they don’t make the salad soggy. But I’ve found that this salad gets eaten up so quickly and completely that there’s no time for the cucumbers to break down. Plus, it always feels wasteful to me to throw away so much perfectly good cuke. Now I just chop them up and save myself a step—and no one has ever complained! • Feel free to customize this recipe to your or your family’s taste. Want more olives? Add ’em! Don’t like bell pepper? Leave it out!

DANCING TO A NEW RHYTHM The Kendall Nielson SHiNE Dance Fitness Story
FALL•WINTER 2023 | VOLUME 16 | ISSUE 4
Kendall Nielson’s journey from the world of real estate to becoming a passionate global well-known advocate for dance and fitness is a testament to the power of pursuing one’s true calling. In a candid interview, Kendall shared the motivating factors behind her career shift, “The reason I left real estate was to stay home with my kids. The pressure to have young ones and maintain the workload of being a Broker was too heavy for me. It was hard for me to admit because I wanted to be able to do it all and make it look easy, so I had to set my ego aside and make the choice for my own sanity and my family.” Kendall’s journey into the world of fitness and dance began as a full-time stay-at-home mom in 2008. She recalls her initial reluctance to step into the group fitness room at the YMCA, as it seemed intimidating. However, it was a wellness retreat with her mother that marked a turning point. The retreat offered a variety of dance classes that ignited Kendall’s passion for fitness. She described the experience, saying, “With each class, I could feel my soul lift. I felt so happy, sweaty, and creative, and it was pushing me out of my comfort zone, but I liked it. I knew that this feeling was something I wanted to bring back to Eagle with me.”

“WITH EACH CLASS, I COULD FEEL MY SOUL LIFT. I FELT SO HAPPY, SWEATY, AND CREATIVE, AND IT WAS PUSHING ME OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE, BUT I LIKED IT. - Kendall Nielson, SHiNE Creator
With a desire to bring the joy of dance and fitness to her community, Kendall set out to find a fitness format that resonated with her. Fueled by her love for music and dance moves that made her feel like a backup dancer to Beyoncé, she decided to create her own class. Kendall’s initial goal was modest but achievable: “My goal was to get at least 5 other women to come to class, and if they each paid $5, it would cover my rent for the space. I felt like that was doable.” Thus, SHiNE Dance Fitness was born, built on the foundation of community and empowerment. Starting with YouTube as a stay-at-home mom was a bold move, and Kendall acknowledged the doubts that arose. However, she explained, “I thought to myself I have nothing to lose, and no one really is going to see it. If it does well, I can then share it, and if it bombs, I can always take it down.” Ten years later, in 2018, SHiNE reached 170K subscribers, a testament to Kendall’s determination and the community she has built. The evolution of SHiNE didn’t stop at YouTube. Kendall was approached by a fitness company that wanted her to create an instructor training program to certify their coaches as SHiNE instructors. This unexpected opportunity led to the establishment of national certification programs, which have continued to grow and evolve over the years. Kendall’s journey has now expanded from her local community to reaching individuals worldwide, with over 700 instructors around the globe. Eagle may not be the first place that comes to mind for a dance and fitness company’s headquarters. Kendall’s decision to establish her base here was driven by necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic. She shared, “I found a place that was half a mile away and ready to move in. It was soundproofed, had mirrors, and despite being half the size I was used to, it felt like the right move. With the help of our community, I was able to make that dream a reality.” Reflecting on the journey from their early YouTube days to where SHiNE stands today, Kendall notes the remarkable progress they’ve made in terms of sound quality, resolution, and the confidence of their dancers. This journey is not just about dance and fitness but also about the sense of community and empowerment that Kendall and SHiNE have created over the years. Connection is at the heart of SHiNE, both locally and online. Kendall Nielson and her team have fostered a sense of community by offering various opportunities for people to connect. This includes annual retreats, like the one in McCall, which have become a cherished tradition. Furthermore, the concept of “SHINECATION” has been introduced every other year, bringing together SHiNE enthusiasts from YouTube, online students, instructors, and local participants. In the digital realm, monthly Zoom calls, dedicated Facebook groups, and newsletters keep the community engaged, allowing everyone to stay connected and inspired.

“I THOUGHT TO MYSELF I HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE, AND NO ONE REALLY IS GOING TO SEE IT. IF IT DOES WELL I CAN THEN SHARE IT, AND IF IT BOMBS, I CAN ALWAYS TAKE IT DOWN.”
Kendall’s advice for those looking to transform their passion into a successful business is simple but powerful: start. Take small, consistent actions every day, and ensure that your journey is fueled by love. Loving what you do makes the commitment, time, energy, and passion feel like a labor of love rather than work.
The remarkable growth of SHiNE on YouTube, with over 270,000 subscribers today, can be attributed to Kendall’s unwavering commitment to consistency. For over a decade, she has consistently posted videos, uploading new content every Friday. Additionally, staying attuned to audience preferences by choreographing routines to trending music has been a winning strategy. A key takeaway from Kendall’s experience is the importance of listening to what the audience wants – even if it means embracing songs that may not be personal favorites. SHiNE’s online dance classes, aptly named “REALITY FITNESS,” provide subscribers with a unique and relatable experience. The unscripted nature of the classes, with students sometimes not knowing the playlist, creates an authentic and engaging atmosphere. Subscribers enjoy quality sound, ad-free content, and a consistent posting schedule. With various instructors, each bringing their unique style, and a diverse playlist for every class, SHiNE’s online community finds joy in every session. Innovations are also on the horizon. SHiNE’s offerings have expanded to include SHiNE LIGHT, a lowimpact version of SHiNE Dance Fitness, and the new UPLIFT format, a strength training program set to iconic music. Members of the Plus Plan gain access to archived classes and the Playlist Builder, offering endless variety and customization.
Balancing the roles of a mom and a successful business owner has been integral to Kendall’s journey. 36/52
Eagle Magazine had the privilege of sitting down with the passionate founder, Sarah Smith, to delve into the heart and soul of Brookside Stables and explore the remarkable equestrian experiences it offers. Sarah shared her inspiring journey of transforming a childhood love for horses into a thriving equestrian hub. She explained, “Growing up, I wanted to spend all of my free time with horses. As a child, I eagerly awaited Summer Horse Camps, and my passion for these magnificent creatures continued to grow.” This enthusiasm eventually led her to purchase her first horse. Initially, the focus was on Summer Horse Camps, but she soon recognized the demand for year-round equestrian experiences. Brookside Stables offers an array of services, each tailored to cater to the unique needs of its diverse clientele. Western Riding Lessons are a standout offering, available for children and adults aged four and above. The stables provide both private and semi-private lessons, ensuring that each student receives personalized attention. Sarah emphasized, “We keep the student-toinstructor ratio low to guarantee ample ride time and effective instruction.” One of the remarkable services offered at Brookside Stables is Therapeutic Horsemanship Classes. Partnering with the Odyssey/Empowering Parents Idaho Program, these classes have had a profound impact on the participants. Sarah proudly stated, “Horsemanship and horseback riding can improve self-confidence, reduce anxiety, and increase trust, flexibility, and strength.” For young riders looking to immerse themselves in the equestrian world, the Horse Camps at Brookside Stables are a fantastic opportunity. Designed for students aged 5-12, these camps offer a well-rounded experience, including Western and bareback riding, grooming, horse care, crafts, and interactions with other barn animals. Brookside Stables also hosts Homeschool & After School Horse Clubs, offering students a chance to continue their equestrian education throughout the school year. These clubs meet weekly and cover various aspects of horsemanship, including grooming, riding, and even crafting activities. The stables are not just a place for education; they also make celebrations unforgettable with their birthday parties and events. These parties include a tour of the barn, horseshoe decorating, Western riding, and a sweet ending with cupcakes and goodie bags, ensuring a memorable experience for all attendees.

Sturman’s
Where cigars and wine find a new home in Eagle In the picturesque town of Eagle, a new oasis for cigar and wine enthusiasts is about to grace the community with its presence. Sturman’s, a family legacy now carried forward by owner Ryan Sturman, is set to open its third location, promising a unique and inclusive experience for all. We had the privilege of speaking with Ryan, who shared the story behind Sturman’s and what sets it apart from the traditional cigar lounge. The legacy began 30 years ago when Mark Sturman, Ryan’s father, opened the downtown Boise location. Thirteen years ago, Ryan took the reins and embarked on a mission to make cigars and wine more accessible to younger generations. He aimed to dispel the misconception that these pleasures were exclusive and high-end. Ryan envisions a lounge where everyone, regardless of their background, can enjoy fine cigars, exquisite wine, and a welcoming atmosphere, without breaking the bank.

In the heart of Eagle, the new Sturman’s location will boast a contemporary yet comfy design, ensuring a shiny and fancy ambiance. It’s meant to be a comfortable, friendly, and welcoming space where patrons can feel at ease, whether they’re dressed for a date night or in casual attire. A massive double-deck and outdoor patio will add to the vibe with an open-air concept and pulldown shades for winter months. “One of the standout features of the Eagle location is the outdoor putting green and a built-out stage for live music,” replied Ryan. “It’s more than a lounge – it’s an experience.” Sturman’s prides itself on its handpicked selection of cigars, tailored to cater to everyone, from beginners to experienced aficionados. With 30 years of experience, the team knows what each customer might enjoy, and they meticulously curate the cigar offerings. What truly will set it apart is its commitment to offering more than just cigars and wine. At the Garden City location, and soon in Eagle, you can expect open mic nights, trivia, parties, wine tastings, and exclusive events for members. Sturman’s goes beyond being a simple lounge; it’s a place to socialize and have fun, “My success is tied to our customer service and staff. Without them, I’m just a building with wine on the wall. They infuse our Sturman’s culture into the experience. They are the key to my success.” Sturman’s takes its drink selection as seriously as its cigars. The wine list is carefully curated, with a rotating selection that changes weekly. Their bottle list is a contender among the best in the business. As they move forward, a mixologist will join the team to craft an exciting cocktail menu, offering patrons a diverse array of drinks to enjoy. As for the future, they have big plans. Beyond Eagle, they are eyeing locations in Meridian, Bend, Oregon, and possibly southeast Boise, promising to spread their unique brand of entertainment and camaraderie. In closing, Ryan Sturman had one message for both returning customers and those yet to experience Sturman’s. “Come and try us out. I promise you’ll be back. It’s our job to keep you coming back.” He emphasized again that his staff plays a pivotal role in the lounge’s success, as it’s their warm and friendly atmosphere that truly sets them apart.
