HELLO EM READERS!
Fall is among us. Cold crisp nights, changing colors, and the anticipation of festive activities and harvest gatherings brings positive vibes. In preparation for all things fall, we’ve selected a few activities for the young and the less young. The City of Eagle is gearing up for family activities such as the Eagle Harvest Festival, where face painting, pumpkin carving, and music will be present. For those curious about Eagle history, the museum has a historical walking tour coming up. For pet lovers, there’s Yappy Hour through November 5th where you can grab a cold one and hang with your furry person. Also coming up on September 26th is another Eagle Art Walk, which is becoming a highly anticipated event in Eagle. Plenty is going on, even in some people’s backyards. For many years now, we’ve covered Eagle residents that are doing something unique, like Nick Bucchino, who created a home observatory. His passion for exploring the universe is one of envy; at least we are. Another resident, is Julie McCallson, an entrepreneur in the personal training world at an enterprise level that is continuing to expand her knowledge of health and wellness. We hope you enjoy the balance of community within these pages.
Thank you for reading! Tia Markland-Crabtree

EAGLE LANDING BY PATRICIA MINKIEWICZ
The Mayor’s City of Eagle August Newsletter highlighted an enhancement project that will transform a large property in the heart of downtown into a useful and attractive addition to city services. Purchased by the City this summer, the EAGLE LANDING property is located at Eagle Road and Mission Drive across the street from Eagle Elementary School. Plans call for a needed Community Center, a Museum of Eagle History & Preservation, and city Staff Offices for the Department of Parks & Recreation as well as for the Museum. On-site parking will be available, and a traffic signal light already exists at the corner for safety. The location has been cleaned up, leveled, and a temporary sign installed. According to Ellen Mattila, Eagle’s Public Information Officer, “The next step will be a ‘greening up’ of the area with a new irrigation system.” Preserving the historic 1938 church structure on the property was fortuitous, as the interior will be transformed to house exhibits of the Eagle Museum of History & Preservation which will relocate there from its current site on State Street downtown. A major plus is an existing, mature tree adjacent to the west side of the old church. It will supply some needed shade for visitors on hot days, and the city might decide to install a long bench or two under the tree for that purpose as well as for school children who are on a class visit to the Museum. An old house on the property will be renovated and outfitted to become the city Staff Offices for both the Parks & Recreation Dept. and the Museum. P&R Superintendent Brandon “Beeg” Johnson and his Team’s offices currently are located at City Hall.
12
TA L K I N G P O I N T S
A third existing building with a kitchen is in good condition and will be refurbished to become a new Community Center offering recreational classes and activities for all ages. Maybe the Eagle Arts Commission might come up with some clever recommendations for permanent signage at the structures and the property. Some outdoor lighting will be needed within the complex and parking areas, and for ambiance and connectivity the city might consider installing some lampposts like those currently along the adjacent Eagle Road. ¢ For additional information on the Eagle Landing project, contact Ellen Mattila at 208-489-8790 direct at City Hall.

MOVING ON Honoring a business founder and beloved husband BY BARB LAW SHELLEY
PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
When her beloved husband and business partner passed away unexpectedly in March of 2018, Karen Sassadeck was inundated with decisions to make and heart-breaking grief to process. Should she keep the business open? Would their patients support the business after the death of its founder, Dr. Lawrence Sassadeck, or “Doc” as he was known? Would keeping the business open to serve and honor his legacy be right or was it better to move on into a new field? “Doc” a second-generation chiropractic physician practiced for 41 years, with 21 years on the east coast. After vacationing in Idaho, they fell in love with the community, he and Karen, and daughter Lauren, moved from Virginia in 2001 to establish his practice in the quiet calm of Southwest Idaho. In Eagle, he and Karen founded Complementary & Integrative Medicine of Eagle, for over 17 years. Larry as the chiropractor and Karen

the clinic administrator, happily worked together for over 28 years. “Larry cared deeply for his patients” Karen says. He even had a patient move to Idaho from Virginia just to continue care. Quite a few would visit just to be treated, while they toured Idaho. Dr. Larry was 66 years young when he passed. Ultimately, Karen had serious decisions to make, while grieving for her loss she had to decide whether to continue Larry’s legacy or venture on a new path. She decided to do both, and on July 4th, 2018, Karen Sassadeck started an aesthetics service at CIME, called Eagle Body Sculpting, featuring the world renowned Exilis Elite™ the most powerful safe and effective aesthetic treatment available for skin-tightening and body sculpting. She really wanted

to help women and men achieve “their look,” without going to Beverly Hills. An additional service at CIME, is a physician guided weight loss program called, ChiroTHIN™, She works with Eagle Chiropractor, Dr. Kraig Knotts, DC, CCCP, of Eagle Sport & Spine (Chiropractor for Idaho Steelheads Hockey Team) as he maintains his private practice in Eagle, Karen assists him at CIME weekly, monitoring and coaching patients while on their weight loss program. As her husband loved his patients, Dr. Knott’s loves his patients with the same care and attention. Karen loves to help people as well, especially with weight loss, she advises, “Don’t over-think the foods you can’t have, focus on foods you can have and make sure they come from clean, organic sources. Your food presentation should be colorful and pretty, because, we first eat with our eyes.” She further teaches your palate will change as you eat clean, natural foods. You will begin to crave whole foods rather than processed foods. “Be mindful of what you put into your body,” she advises. Continuing CIME without Dr. Larry is challenging, but “our patients trust means so much as they continue to seek our services.” says Karen. “Serving and helping patients was Doc’s whole life. He loved his patients. I am happy I can continue his legacy of care.” ¢

HEALTH AND WELLNESS For the body and mind BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPHY RASE LITTLEFIELD
Mind, body, and spirit are paramount in developing and maintaining sustainable wellness. What does it mean to be ‘well’? Wellness has a deep and personal definition for each of us, but there are things we know and accept as positive influencers on our lives. In a world of stressed out, stagnant, and under nourished days it is important to take a step back and assess what wellness truly means to you. Julie McCallson has spent close to the last two decades crafting her own understanding of wellness and sharing that with the world around her. In 2001 she started a school to teach others how to be a personal fitness trainer. At this time there were no physical locations to gain this experience and students were forced to get online certifications. Since then she has established five brick and mortar locations of the National Personal Training Institute (NPTI) throughout California. Julie’s journey to Idaho was rooted in family and a love of fitness. Her daughter
34 34

moved to Meridian and a few visits had Julie hooked. She has been here for the last five years living on the river and tells Eagle Magazine, “Since then (coming to Idaho) I have made such deep, rich friendships and my love for fitness has expanded with bike riding, hiking, and I’ve more recently added yoga to my fitness and spiritual journey.” We all know how captivating our valley can be for those inclined to outdoor recreation and fitness. In her time with NPTI Julie has expanded many fitness programs. They currently offer Personal Fitness Training certification, Master Personal Trainer courses, and yoga certifications. The courses are active, hands-on, and set participants up for future success with focuses on networking and nutrition education. Graduates can expect lifetime nationwide job placement assistance and ongoing consultations with nutritionists and fitness experts. A focus on physical health aligns with an improvement in mental health. Julie’s ded-
ication to providing an environment of growth is apparent through NPTI and her personal practice of Reiki. Reiki is, simply put, energy healing. A Reiki professional harnesses universal energy to restore physical and emotional well-being. Julie has completed the Reiki Master Course through Reiki Renewal in Boise. She is currently enjoying practicing and sharing her skills with friends and family but plans to expand to outside clients soon. Julie’s life is based in sharing wellness whether that’s a physical expression of health improvement or sharing positive healing energy through Reiki practices. She shared, “I would just like to show my gratitude for all that Idaho has to offer. The wonderful warm people that I have found to be so genuine. I feel like I have made friends here that I will have forever. I love that my family is here raising their three kids in such a down-to-earth environment.”¢

CURATED GOODS FOR MEN Donnie Ricardo BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPHY RASE LITTLEFIELD
Most fathers have received a boring tie or new tool for the barbecue. Each outdoorsy brother has been gifted one too many fishing lures or novelty t-shirts. Any uncle with a taste for spirits likely expects to receive a bottle of his favorite bourbon each time he gets a gift. What if there was a place that allowed us to break free from this perpetual state of bland gift giving? Where is a store designed for men with a variety of tastes and passions in life? Donnie Ricardo fills a void felt by many shoppers in the city of Eagle. You could go to the mall and find your standard clothing or shoes, or you could browse a truly unique selection of fine gifts and everyday goods. Many of Donnie Ricardo’s products are made in the US, and you’re not likely to find any of them in big box stores. Owner, Aimee Ricci, shares her perspective, “If you look up the definition of curated, it means ‘carefully chosen and thoughtfully organized or presented’. That’s exactly what we’re doing with our product offering – we are carefully selecting items that are unique and presenting them in a way that we hope appeals specifically to men.” Aimee also owns Urban

to know about Donnie Ricardo, it’s that we are truly unique. And that’s not just us saying that – it’s what we hear almost every time someone new comes in. Customers love that they can shop for fine, distinctive gifts as well as everyday items in the same place. We’re a bit tucked away off the main street, but well worth finding us.” Visit their Eagle location at 123 E. Aikens Street to find your next perfect gift. STAR LABS A Glimpse into the Cosmos BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPHY RASE LITTLEFIELD
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a question asked countless times to children across the world. Some of the more traditional answers include firefighter, ballerina, and doctor. I think it’s safe to say that astronaut trumps that list though. There’s something magical and ethereal about space. A vast abyss of unknown possibilities tantalizes the mind of humans young and old. Nick Bucchino wanted to be an astronaut when he was young. Then ‘life happened’ as it does all too frequently. He went to school, grew up, and strayed from this innate passion for exploration of the unknown. In 2015, his passion ignited once again, and he began snapping photos of the nights sky on his Canon 60D camera. The last four years have been an incredible journey of

exploring the many nuances and intricacies of astrophotography culminating in Star Labs, the Bucchino’s home observatory. Backyard Observatories is a company based out of Ohio that offers a comprehensive building experience for the at home astrophotographer. The Bucchino’s now have an observatory with automated features to the brim. A retractable roof allows for full sky viewing and a Paramount German equatorial mount combined with an SBIG dedicated astrophotography camera can rotate to a precise point in the night sky with the click of a button. This camera runs a cooled CCD chip at -20 degrees Celsius, offering an incredible increase in photograph clarity. It is an understatement to say that the process necessary to obtain a high-quality image of the night sky is a feat. Countless images taken with a focus on the colors red, green, and blue are stacked and finely tuned to create an accurate glimpse into the cosmos. Part of the allure that Idaho had to offer to this star-gazing family comes from the International Dark Skies Association. Our gem state founded the first dark sky reserve in the United States in 2017, spanning more than 1,400 square miles in central Idaho. The Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve is the third largest International Dark Sky Reserve in the world. Bruneau Sand Dunes also features a 25-inch Newtonian Reflector telescope and hosts gatherings to view the stars. The Boise Astronomical Society facilitates star parties allowing anyone with the love of star gazing to experience awe-inspiring visual displays of the galaxies above. It’s needless
to say that Idaho is a perfect place for lovers of the sky to call home. You could say the Bucchino family has their head in (more specifically above) the clouds, but an evening spent with them will show you how down to earth they truly are. Their beautiful Eagle home is comfortable and lively with neighborhood children. The excitement that Nick and his wife Angela share for astronomy is undeniable. Their tag team approach to making images is the perfect dichotomy. Angela is a graphic designer by trade and shares her experience in photo editing to help her husband process the images he has so diligently worked to capture. When I stare at tonight’s sky, I’ll remember this quote from Vincent Van Gogh, “I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.” I’ll be thankful that the Bucchino family allowed star gazing to turn dreams into reality. ¢

THE DOLL DEN Lash studio helping women twofold BY ERIKA HEEREN PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
Lash extensions and microblading are two popular trends in the beauty industry today. For women with busy schedules and the desire for a polished look, it can help you play up your best features with less fussing from day to day. Local studio The Doll Den in Eagle has been helping their clients achieve their lash dreams for two years. Owner Rachel Masonheimer opened The Doll Den after becoming certified in the practice through Lash Affair by J Parisô, and she says she hasn’t put her tweezers down since.

“I wasn’t a stranger to the world of lash extensions, as I had gotten them applied locally for about six months. I was paying almost as much as my car payment to have eyelashes and thought to myself, ‘I bet there are hundreds of women that would appreciate how lashes make you feel but probably can’t afford it.’” Masonheimer opened The Doll Den to make this service more accessible to women of all walks of life – on their schedule. “I believe having flexibility to book appointment at my client’s convenience is very important to my success.” Professional lash extensions are different than your store-bought lashes that are simply glued to your lash line. Semi-permanent extensions are meticulously hand-glued on top of your existing lashes, giving you a seamless and natural look. Properly cared for, the extensions can last for three to four weeks, and eventually fall out on their own like natural lashes. The Doll Den is a reseller of high-quality Lash Affair by J Parisô products.

TOOTH TRUTHS℠ - Heather A. Brown, RDH, MPH -
Oh, Baby! September is Baby Safety Month and while many of you may be thinking about electrical outlet plugs and kitchen cabinet locks, I’m thinking about oral health. That’s right, your baby’s oral health is about long term safety. I can hear some of you now, “Babies don’t even have teeth!” That’s true, but your baby does have gum tissue and their first teeth are preparing to come through at around 6 months of age so oral health is important. Obviously brushing and flossing don’t apply before your baby has teeth, but breastfeeding does. Studies show breastfeeding helps with teeth alignment. While all babies are different, in general, breastfeeding helps prevent cross bites, open bites, and overbites. Breastfeeding a newborn won’t 100% prevent the need for braces in a pre-teen, but the studies show it helps. Once teeth make an appearance there’s more to consider. Do you need to stop breastfeeding due to teeth? That’s a personal choice, but one of the benefits of breast milk for new teeth is the reduction in risk for Baby Bottle Tooth Decay, also known as Baby Bottle Rot. This occurs most often when a baby is put to bed with a bottle filled with fruit juice, formula, or even milk. Essentially the teeth are swimming in sugar. If you really want to give your baby a bottle at bed time, water is best. Breastfeeding moms need to remember to take care of themselves, too. Your nutrition impacts your baby’s nutrition.
The Doll Den also offers microblading for the perfect eyebrow. Microblading is an extremely precise procedure that creates realistic and natural hair strokes. Regardless of the status of your brows – including those who survived the “thin eyebrow trend” of the 1990s – microblading can save you the time and effort of having to constantly shape your own brows every morning. Masonheimer hopes to use her business success to encourage other women in the community. The Doll Den offers one day lash classes for women interested in a potential career change, or just to create an extra source of income. The classes include a complete lash kit, as well as support from Masonheimer and other artists at The Doll Den. For those already enrolled in a beauty program, The Doll Den offers opportunities to job shadow in the studio. Masonheimer is planning to launch The Fumiko Fund scholarship program - named for her friend Danielle Fumiko DeVantier - in 2020. This fund is dedicated to providing lash classes to help women who have been victims of domestic violence. ¢
When it comes to teething, please, stick to the basics, not the fads. Amber teething rings and necklaces seem to be all the rage, but they are not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Besides having no scientific data to back up any medicinal claims, these necklaces pose very real choking and strangulation risks. Numbing gels that contain benzocaine are not recommended either. Instead, solid rubber teething rings, damp washcloths, and gentle massage with a clean finger are tried, true and safe. A good oral health routine for your baby is something you can start just a few days after their birth. Wipe your baby’s gums with a clean, moist cloth after each feeding to discourage bacteria buildup and have them seen by a dentist by their first birthday. Good oral health will give your child a good head start on their overall health.

BOISE JUICE COMPANY More than just a smoothie shop BY MONICA PIERCE
PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
When Jes Heubach found out that the young woman she visited weekly at the local farmers market for her favorite cold-pressed juices wasn’t going to be making them anymore, she took matters into her own hands. Heubach reached out to a friend who had a smoothie shop to seek advice about running such a business, only to learn that her friend was planning to sell the smoothie shop. So, with a twist of fate and the support of her husband as co-owner, Boise Juice Company was born. The original Boise Juice shop is located on State Street in north Boise and offers whole food smoothies, cold-pressed juices, and acai bowls (acai is a South American berry-like fruit that is a diverse foundational superfood often paired with fruit, granolas and other toppings served in a bowl). All Boise Juices are extracted using the cold press method. This process doesn’t heat up the produce and limits oxidation which in turn maintains the integrity of the plants’ cellular structure and extracts the purest form of juice with the greatest density of nutrients and flavor. No dairy, ice, artificial extracts or processed sugars are added. Boise Juice is just pure, organic whole foods. Because it is unpasteurized and has live and active enzymes, nutrients, vitamins and minerals that your body utilizes, the shelf life of

Boise Juice is just four days, making it only available via direct sale to local customers. Fortunately, Boise Juice is now even easier to get your hands on, with a third location recently opened on Eagle Road just down the hill from Chinden. In addition to sales in their stores, Boise Juice Company also delivers across the Treasure Valley and they are available to cater various types of events from corporate meetings to fitness center openings. With a fourth location coming in south Meridian next spring plus an established, recognizable brand, many people think Boise Juice Company is a small franchise corporation. But it is in fact locally owned and family operated and plans to stay that way.
We provide a wide variety of services tailored to meet the needs of our individual and business clients.
Heubach is passionate about the health benefits Boise Juice offers to customers and she is thrilled to see the positive response the community is having to her purposeful products. She enjoys helping customers learn about the amazing ability our bodies have to absorb nutrients from fresh produce. As popular as juice “cleanses” are, Heubach wants people to know that you don’t necessarily have to do a “cleanse” to gain the benefits of these juices. Simply adding Boise Juice to your diet is a valuable supplement to any healthy lifestyle. Following its mission to stand for health, wellness, sustainability, and balance, Boise Juice Company is also doing its part to support the Treasure Valley’s farming economy by sourcing as much of its fresh produce as they can from local organic farmers. So, if you’re looking for a way to support local business and your health, visit Boise Juice Company. With enticing flavors like ‘TropicKALE’ and ‘Turn Up the BEET’, there are plenty of options to explore. ¢ For a full menu and list of locations and hours, visit www.boisejuice.com.

ROGHANI’S A Culinary Adventure BY AMANDA BERNAMONTI PHOTOGRAPHY RASE LITTLEFIELD
I would dare say that dinner can be a magical thing. Dinner is a meal that brings us all together. It allows us to relax, socialize, reminisce about our day and share a scrumptious meal with our loved ones. While typically this experience is only available at home, Roghani’s is a blend of Mediterranean and Persian culture that is working to change the game on dining out, “We want people to wake up feeling great the next day and love every dish and moment spent here. In Mediterranean and Persian culture, the time spent with family at the table is the most important part of the day; we want to create an environment where people feel that level of intimacy and joy together.” Susan and Foad, the owners of Roghani’s have opened their hearts to the community through their restaurant. “Since Susan and Foad

are both excellent cooks and entertainers, people always leave dinners at our home buzzing about the experience. The restaurant is our public extension of how we like guests to feel in our own home.” Thanks to a partnership with local gardens, you can expect to enjoy a variety of seasonal flavors when you come in. “We’re excited to change the menus with the seasons, utilizing whatever is ready for harvest from the gardens, and releasing energizing or comforting foods based on the ebb and flow cycle of the moon. We’ll slowly build more and more relationships with local farmers based on the evolution of our menu; were from a long line of agriculturists and farmers so it’s important to us to find ways to be connected not only to food, but also to the land. Gardening is hyper engrained in our blood and even on the busiest of years we somehow manage to plant a bountiful garden and harvest the goodness that comes from it for use in our home. This is just another way we are extending our home experience into this restaurant creation. Like we said, it’s a true manifestation of the Heart so there’s a lot of little quirks that makes Roghani’s so unique.” Notably, the Persian Kebabs are a highly anticipated fall specials, but other menu favorites are the are the Italian Stuffed Chicken Breast, the Filet Mignon, and Lamb Shank. This meld of Mediterranean and Persian flavors along with along with wine made by Roghani’s are a huge part of what makes this a one of a kind hidden gem. “The restaurant is designed to feel like you’re exploring a hidden nook in another part of the world. Foad is from Iran and Susan lived many years in Greece, so their life in other countries and artistic flair is reflected in everything about our dining experience. From the show-stoppers like our marbled ceiling that Susan Hand-painted, to the smallest of details like the Chateau punch from our orchard, it’s all a reflection of our ‘Chateau home’ and what we have to offer. Five years ago, we took a small boat up the French countryside and stopped at local hidden gems to eat along the way. They were surrounded by water and beautiful land, each with their own unique flair; that’s what we want it to feel like. A secret tucked away, awaiting your awe and joy.”¢
Autumn essence brings mossy fallen leaves, pumpkin lattes, sun-warmed caramel apples, infusing a sense of comfort. Eagle Idaho embraces Fall, much like a warm cup of cocoa. This year, Eagle hosts their Fourth Annual Harvest Fest at Heritage Park. All things Fall. All things Fun. And most importantly, all things family. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 12th and is free to the public. All ages are welcome, including your furry family members (preferably on a leash). This year’s festivities will include free kid-oriented activities, such as pumpkin decorating, mini-pony petting, and a balloon animal artist. Over seventy venders line up, offering items for purchase, such as food and drink, beer and wine, artisan and craft goods, agriculture and produce, and meats from local farmers. Live music and corn-holing contribute to the festivities. In other words, there is something for everyone. You won’t want to miss one of many great photo opp moments with the Donut-on-a-string activity. Think bobbing for apples without the water. For those who’d like to capture a picture but are camera-challenged, the Eagle Arts Commission has also set up a free photo booth. This year, Friends of the Eagle Library Booksale runs concurrently with the fest, located at the library on 100 N Stierman Way. Show support, up your reading level, and buy a book. Keep in mind, if you’re driving through Eagle during the event, E, Cedar Ridge Street will be closed, from 2nd East Street between State and the alley behind Heritage Park. Expect to pull your comfort on and cozy into Autumn with the Harvest Fest. Expect to run into a few familiar faces as last year the event exceeded 5,000 participants. OF LILACS AND LEMONS Picturing an Idaho garden BY GERRY TSURUDA. PHOTOGRAPHY GERRY TSURUDA
A picture may be worth a thousand words, but it doesn’t always tell everything. A picture of our garden may show irises, gladiolas and a barely visible lilac, but there is a missing backstory. Here it is. My wife, Deanna, was born to garden and her skills carry us forward. She has a gardener’s temperament, coaxing plants, flowers and bushes to do their best. She fusses about the details and always carries on. She conjures a few prayers along the way because Idaho’s weather, length of day and season don’t always cooperate. Her prayers are not always answered. Along with anticipated successes, gardening seems to be more about failures waiting to happen. You prepare, you plant and you wait. Then you revisit the drawing board to figure out what needs tweaking. Good gardeners are eternal optimists, a hearty lot, all of them, thinking that just one more hour of toil will make the garden better. That is gardening in Idaho and everywhere else on earth. We are familiar with other places on earth. We are California transplants, that nefarious breed that has come to destroy Idaho one house and traffic jam at a time. But in our defense, I don’t think we are all that good at destruction. After five years in Eagle, we, too, honk and gesture at cars with California plates, just like the natives. But real evidence of our partnership with Idaho is in Deanna’s garden. If you garden seriously, Idaho won’t let you remain a Californian for long. You can try to grow camellias or azaleas. Neither will cooperate. Good luck with planting a lemon tree. Deanna’s family grew them in California, but Idaho doesn’t care. But put a hydrangea on an east-facing mound and you will be generously rewarded. Idaho’s ground and climate

HOME
know what they want you to do. You best learn that early on. A recent California refugee won’t know about the short growing season, and the mad rush to buy plants after the last winter frost. They won’t know that the trees in their neighborhood are probably from Oregon, and that Lucky Peak controls whether you’ll have water for your lawn, and when. If a picture could wax poetic about everything, I wouldn’t have to tell you about the thousands of huge river rocks that we have excavated from our supposedly pristine topsoil, and about the landscaping charlatans who were paid handsomely for their “expertise”. There would be no need to tell you that, aside from the volume of rocks we repurposed throughout the yard, the remaining ones would stretch all the way to Cleveland. And a picture could not tell you where Cleveland is on a map, never mind all those megapixels. People from around the neighborhood occasionally come by to see Deanna’s handiwork. Even a confident gardener needs some reassurance that her fine art isn’t misguided in concept or execution, that the Aztec blue rocks hand-placed individually, actually look like a flowing river. I hate to brag, but with everything going on here, it’s not like I am entirely MIA. My hole-digging skills command attention; moving dirt around is a calling. Some say we are out to change Idaho into California, but I like Idaho just fine. I’m a native Californian, but my mom was born in Idaho Falls. I guess I have Idaho running through my veins. I found out recently that I am actually related to the founder of Eagle. Nothing in particular I did. My cousin married into his family line, so it’s all on her. Mom’s ashes now lay under that lilac bush in our backyard. She used to talk about how much she missed the lilacs and huckleberries of her youth. She never forgot the taste of a freshly picked Idaho spud; her family grew them. She left Idaho as a teenager, and now she has returned home. As for the lilac, it is doing just fine. After all, a good Idaho gardener planted it, and someone dug a fine hole. And, now, Mom eagerly awaits next year’s bloom. ¢ For more photography and writing, please visit www.gerrytsuruda.com.

CBD: SNAKE OIL OR MEDICINE? A Physician explains CBD oil BY TAMARA SIMON MD, MPH PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMSON
The human body is a tireless machine fueled by many biological functions and like any machine, it can malfunction in countless ways. Healthcare options and treatments are expanding every day as new research becomes available to help with these malfunctions. One such option is the utilization of CBD. Recently the FDA has approved three new CBD drugs, to be used for serious diseases such as pediatric epilepsy, wasting syndrome and nausea. The FDA ruling combined with the recent Federally approved Farm Bill, (allowing
60
MEDICAL
farmers to grow hemp) has catapulted CBD to the forefront of medical interest. Being a skeptic, I asked myself, How are we able to use this plant based substance in a non plant based system? So as a researcher, I set out to make sense of this CBD craze. What I found was amazing. CBD is commonly confused with its cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is an abbreviation of cannabidiol and is found in the stalks of hemp or cannabis plants. Hemp plants produce a significantly higher volume of CBD than the flowering part
of the cannabis plants and have very low levels of THC, the active component in marijuana. In short, CBD does not have the euphoric or ‘high feeling’ associated with THC, while providing an array of potential health benefits. CBD’s history goes back several centuries, and is rooted in treatment of a variety of uses and ailments. Archeologists have discovered the plant in tombs of the ancient Egyptians. It was also commonly grown across European fields (champs de cannabis) as early
as the 13 century and the stalks or fibers were used in the manufacturing of ropes for ships because of its durable strength. The plant was also crushed up into salves and used for pain management, epilepsy, anxiety, mood and digestive disorders. In 1990 and 1993 the first endogenous (our own) receptors were discovered. CBR1 that binds THC, and CBR2 that binds CBD. We actually have our own naturally occurring Endocannabinoid System (ECS)! And these cannabinoids are present in all major body systems! Your ECS works by communicating with the receptors for mood, pain, sleep, anxiety etc. Think of cannabinoids like a lock and key mechanism. Exactly like your hormone system. When a cannabinoid connects to a receptor, a door opens causing a reaction in the body and naturally produces endocannabinoids. However, as we age these cannabinoids, just like hormones, decrease. CBD binds to receptors allowing the body to work more efficiently. And taken in the right doses can have amazing results. After conducting our own clinical studies, we found that some products worked well, especially for pain, anxiety, and sleep, while other products were found lacking. Sourcing and extracting CBD is an incredibly vital aspect to successful results. Purchasing options are growing rapidly as the benefits become more scientifically apparent. Credibility of products is not something to be taken lightly. At Simply Simon, we developed our own CBD products based on our findings. QR codes are displayed on all our products, meaning you can scan each individual item for lab results. Each product is extracted organically and is only harvested from mature hemp stalk, In addition, third party testing ensures that our products are indeed 0% THC free. Both these steps are necessary to be compliant under Idaho’s strict CBD definition and drug policy laws.If you’re curious about availability or have additional questions, email info@simplysimonproducts. com or check out simplysimoncbd.com. Dr. Simon does not endorse recreational or medical use of THC products. ¢
