June and July 2014 – Issue 28
Hello...

Let’s hope this year brings us lots of glorious sunshine! In this issue we include our new “Focus on Business” feature on page 13. Do you have a business that you would like to promote and gain new customers? If so, this could be the way forward for you. Why not give us a call or send us an email? We also include our regular gardening feature “A View from the Potting Shed” on page 14, and “Butterflies of Sussex” on page 22 – now’s the time to be out and about in the fresh air! We also have a special article on the Long Man of Wilmington, by Philip Pavey – an interesting read on page 27. Thanks to everyone who has emailed articles for this issue. If anyone else would like to publish details of their clubs and organisations in the next issue, please email your articles and details to me by the 9th July. I look forward to hearing from you! Water Kefir is produced by introducing a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts into sugar water - the beneficial bacteria and yeasts present in the grains metabolize the sugar and turn it into lactic acid. Grains are small, translucent, gelatinous structures and are made up from a mixture of bacteria including lactobacillus hilgardii which gives them their characteristic crystal-like appearance. When properly cared for and regularly cultured, they produce a wonderful probiotic-rich beverage and will continue to grow and reproduce indefinitely.

FOCUS ON BUSINESS Jewellery up-cycling at its best... If you would like a beautiful piece of jewellery, made using traditional skills and tools, then pay a visit to the Nigel Graham Designer Goldsmith shop and gallery situated at 3 Crown Street, Old Town – the only bespoke jewellers in Eastbourne who use the traditional skills and tools to hand-make stunning pieces of jewellery on the premises. Every piece is fabricated with care and attention by Nigel and his daughter, Lisa – they work in all the precious metals and use precious and semi-precious stones to enhance the finished pieces. When asked why he makes jewellery by hand Nigel replies, “Working with the materials is the most exciting part of the process for me. Simply put, I like making things. In my pieces, I exercise my love of colour, incorporating a wide range of coloured stones in the designs.”

A view from the Potting Shed
H
(bottom left), famous for thriving on hot dry tiled roofs and now widely used on green roof schemes where it can adapt to the very shallow free draining soils. It’s quite a vigorous semp., with beautiful red tints in winter. Grow in shallow containers in full sun where it will quickly spread to around 30cm in width. If you are looking for a plant to cover an old dry stone wall or soften the corner of a raised bed, look no further than Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’. If happy, it does have a tendency to walk, but with its long flowering season and pretty purple flowers I’m sure your neighbours won’t mind if it starts appearing in their crevices too.
ow low can you grow?
Mention the word ‘alpine’ to a garden designer and (in general) you’ll be given the same facial expression as a child who’s just bitten into an unwaxed lemon! Insignificant leaf growth with tiny flowers … what’s to love? Associated with badly designed 60s rockeries, these low growing perennials really do get a raw deal. In the main, the poor little things can’t climb very far, can’t extend their roots to escape from water logged soil, and have not adapted to elongating their stems to reach the sunlight (because a naughty gardener planted the pot-bought specimen under the shade of a tree).
Until next time, happy gardening, Lee Bestall

Until I saw a glasshouse full of alpine plants all in bloom at the same time I wasn’t a huge fan either, but seeing them up close and personal when displayed at waist height, you realise how wonderful these tiny creations are. Over recent years, alpines have really been appreciated for their versatility and employed in new applications. Take the humble Sempervivum ‘Othello’
14
o
Alpines, like other successful species, have adapted themselves to their native habitats, often found clung to the side of a windy rock face way above sea level. When you observe them in the wild, you easily understand why they are so small. The exposed sites would quickly dry out large leaves, so many are small in size such as those of Hypericum olympicum, and others often silver in colour such as the very cute Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Nana’. Rather a mouthful to say and often not the most romantic sounding names either, take Pulsatilla vulgaris (the pasque flower) as an example. It might not win any prizes in the largest plant competition, but its ability to grow on nearly solid limestone rock is pretty impressive. So too are its beautiful flowers, delicate dissected foliage and crazy seed heads.
JOBS TO DO IN JUNE & JULY
3 Plant grasses. 3 Use water wisely. In the heat of the summer water young plants and pot plants regularly. Best to check every day and please don’t forget the birds. They need water just as much as the plants. 3 Transplant Dahlias into their main growing place and water well. 3 Pinch out tomatoes after 4 or 5 trusses or when they reach the top of the greenhouse. Keep your greenhouse well ventilated and watch out for pests. 3 Sow salad leaves every two weeks for a continuous crop. 3 Maintain a regular programme of weeding, checking for pests and diseases. 3 Tie up climbers. 3 Earth up potatoes 3 Put nets over soft fruit to protect from birds etc. 3 Ensure the greenhouse has adequate ventilation and shading. Internal temperatures may now get very high.

St Elisabeth’s – still alive and kicking
It stands like a sentinel on top of the hill on Victoria Drive, a landmark which can be seen for miles around. The original St Elisabeth’s Church building is quite a sight, to some even a bit of a blot on the landscape so large and looming it is – and somewhat out of character with the architecture it sits amidst. When it was built in the 1930s it was rather groundbreaking and grand, towering above the fields around it – before many of the surrounding houses were even built. It certainly was a signpost and made a somewhat prophetic statement that here was to develop a strong and vibrant worshipping community worthy of the architectural scale of the building. The somewhat stark red brick exterior belied the beauty of the interior, and the wonderful acoustics which enhanced the worship of the growing community in this part of Eastbourne just before and beyond the Second World War. In recent years the building has come to be regarded as a sign of failure and decline. Indeed many people appear to think that because the church was declared redundant in 2002 there is no longer a functioning St Elisabeth’s church in Old Town. How wrong they are as the church community celebrates its 80th anniversary this year – 80 years of continuous worship and community involvement. 2002 also saw the arrival of a new Priest-in-charge (now Vicar) when David Gillard took on the task of taking this church (no longer a parish church at that stage) forward into the next century. The people of St Elisabeth’s rallied around and set about refurbishing and developing the church hall and rooms next door into their new home for worship. In 2004 the first service was held in the ‘new church’ and in 2006 St Elisabeth’s ‘new’ church was re-commissioned as a parish church. The church community has continued to meet faithfully for worship every Sunday and in 2004, alongside the 9.30am communion service, established a second morning service (Sunday@11), aimed at attracting young families into the church. Both services continue to thrive and the church is very much open for business. And not just on Sundays either. The building in which the church
meets is also a very active Centre for Community, with local groups meeting in one or more of the rooms on most days of the week. These range from Rainbows and Brownies through numerous art groups, Eastbourne G&S Society and The Eastbourne Rock Choir. The Centre is also home to The Lounge, a unique initiative in Eastbourne, providing a Youth Arts Café for Year 7s and above on Saturday evenings in term-time. The first floor of the Centre has been developed into a self-contained conference centre with its own meeting rooms, kitchen and computer training room. The installation of a lift in 2011 means that the building is fully accessible on all levels and also wi-fi enabled throughout. In recent months, through the work of a new initiative, Arts @St.E’s, the Centre has housed a number of art exhibitions featuring works by Harold Mockford, George Musgrave and children from Cavendish and Ocklynge Schools, as well as a very successful ‘Springtime Showcase’ concert which was sold out! There are plans afoot to refurbish the stage in the Centre and install new lighting to provide a fully operational 180-seat theatre for community use as well. Old Town’s own community theatre! So although people might have the impression that nothing goes on around the old building they would be mistaken. As one famous London Variety theatre used to proclaim “we never close” and whilst St Elisabeth’s Church and Centre for Community may not present the sort of programmes the Windmill, did it is very much alive and kicking. Perhaps when the area is redeveloped in the near future the people of Eastbourne might look at St Elisabeth’s in a new light. As Revd. Gillard says, “Once it’s gone they might even be able to see us again. Why not come along and find out, perhaps even on a Sunday – we don’t bite.”

BUTTERFLIES OF SUSSEX with Bob Eade June & July
The middle of summer on the downs around Sussex brings so much natural beauty with wild flowers, birds singing, bees buzzing and butterflies fluttering, there is nothing better than to just sit quietly and soak it all in. The Marbled White butterflies start flying during June and when they first emerge they are very evident with their black and white patterned wings. Many butterflies rely on camouflage to keep hidden from predators; however, it appears that the Marbled White is obnoxious to birds, which protects it whilst it is so easily seen. The Marbled White numbers continue to build up and they can be seen, throughout July until midway through August. Almost anywhere on the downs this butterfly can be seen but the meadow between Birling Gap and Belle Tout Wood is a particularly good place to see them where they can be found nectaring on flowers such as knapweed and field scabious.

The most common butterfly in Britain, and Sussex, is the Meadow Brown; these butterflies also start to fly in June. This species is common on downland, heathland, woodland and even gardens. They also have a very long flight season, with butterflies emerging throughout the rest of the summer right up to early October. Occasionally clouds of these butterflies can be sent up by walking through long grass in meadows. Look out for them too on bramble flowers, which are a favourite nectaring source for this species. The Large Skipper is a butterfly of rough grassland and woodland rides where the males can be very territorial. Like all skippers they can be confused with moths as they are quite stout and hairy and their flight is very rapid. This golden brown butterfly has large black eyes that look like a pair of headphones. They often perch on a sunny leaf, basking with their forewings at a slightly different angle to their hindwings, which is very distinctive. The rarest butterfly we have nearby is the Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary. The only site for this butterfly in the South East of England is in woodland near Laughton. This is on a nature reserve owned and managed by Butterfly Conservation. This beautiful butterfly starts to emerge just before the end of May and then can be seen throughout June nectaring on bramble flowers and bugle. This is another butterfly that had declined in numbers enormously in recent years, but hopefully due to the work and commitment by Butterfly Conservation it will continue to fly in Sussex for many years to come.

A Good Read Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel This is a book that I took some time ‘getting round to’, not being sure that historical fiction was what I felt like reading. However, from the moment I did get round to it, I was hooked. Mantel deserves the praise and awards heaped on this volume and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies: it is truly a remarkable book. The central character, introduced in Wolf Hall, is Thomas Cromwell – clerk to Cardinal Wolsey at the time of Henry VIII’s attempts to divorce his first wife. The fact that Cromwell stands out against the figures of Wolsey, Thomas More and Henry himself is testament to Mantel’s storytelling power. He is a compelling character – complex, brutal at times and yet always sympathetic: a far cry from other fictionalised accounts, and yet somehow definitive. The novel traces the rise of Cromwell, as first Wolsey and then More fall, seeing him become Henry’s chief adviser at the same time as the Boleyn family come to dominate the court. Anne and her sister Mary are the central female characters, each deeply involved in the life of the king and both fascinating in their own right. The historical and political intrigues surrounding these events are well known to many, and Mantel uses them to structure the novel as she concentrates on her characters and the ways in which their lives are affected. Cromwell’s own family tragedies and triumphs are offset against events at court, developing the human side, which makes this depiction so different.

This isn’t an easy book, and at over 600 pages it is a substantial read. But the minute I put it down, I picked up the sequel – and that fact speaks volumes.

LONG MAN OF WILMINGTON – SOLAR CALENDAR? In my book Mysteries of History in Sussex (Pomegranate Press, 2012) I wrote a chapter about the Long Man, perhaps the best known and most enigmatic mystery in the county. The known facts about him are few and simple. The figure is a white outline of a man, without features or protrusions, on the grass of the north-facing escarpment of Windover Hill in the South Downs. He is 235 feet high, his arms are half outstretched, and in each hand he has a vertical pole about the same height as himself. The figure is now marked by blocks rather like kerbstones, but was originally created by cutting away the grass and topsoil to reveal the white chalk beneath. As such it would have grown over quite quickly if not maintained, leaving only a slight indentation visible only in certain conditions – perhaps under snow or when the sun was at a particular angle. Until recently the first known reference to the figure was a drawing by Sir William Burrell of 1776, which showed the figure with facial features, hair on his head, a V-neck below the chin suggesting he is dressed in a sort of ‘romper suit’, and with his poles sprouting at the top into a rake on one side and a scythe on the other. None of these feature in the first photographs taken in the nineteenth century, where the figure is the same plain outline as now. Very curiously, though, an earlier drawing of 1710 was discovered in 1993 and shows the figure as much more similar to what we see – less developed facial features, no hair, no V-neck and no rake and scythe heads. So it is mystifying how these attributes were apparently not there in 1710, but were recorded in 1776, only to disappear again by Victorian times. Possibly Sir William Burrell read more into the faint indentations in the grass, which are probably all he would have seen. When the figure was created, by whom and why, are further mysteries. Other chalk hillside figures are definitely prehistoric, and there are Neolithic barrows nearby. The figure is similar to one on a Roman coin, and a report of 1874 recorded Roman brick fragments in the outline, but no one knows where they are now. The figure is even more similar to one on a pagan Saxon artefact, the Framliingham belt buckle, and it could be that after the Saxons had driven the Britons north of the South Downs (as recounted in the ninth-century Anglo-Saxon
26
Chronicle) they constructed the figure to ward off counter-attacks. A medieval origin seems unlikely because the figure is not remotely Christian, but a Tudor origin as a sort of folly is possible. Thermo-luminescence dating of the outline has suggested 1545, but that of course could have been a re-digging of an earlier faded outline. On the other hand the figure is elongated to compensate for the slope of the hillside, so as to appear of normal proportions from the village below, which suggests a knowledge of perspective – discovered only in the Renaissance. But altogether I thought the Saxon theory was most likely. Since writing the book though, I have discovered another fascinating dimension. Some years ago I visited by complete chance on 2nd February and encountered a group of pagan worshippers gathered on the flattopped (clearly artificial) earth mound, an oval roughly 30 yards by 20, which lies at the foot of the hill under the Long Man. They were talking informally, seemingly after some kind of ritual. Once home I discovered that the day was Candlemas, previously the pagan festival of Imbolc, intermediate between the winter solstice on 21st December (the shortest day, with under eight hours’ sunlight in southern England) and the spring equinox on 21st March (when sunlight and darkness are both twelve hours). Clearly the pagans linked this with the Long Man, but I could see no reason to do this. On February 2nd 2013 I visited again, hoping to see the pagans’ ritual in full, though sadly they were not there. However, from the mound the sun was just peeping over the ridge of the hill, above the head of the Long Man. This was such a dramatic sight that I took a photo, my camera recording the time as just after 1pm. But once home I discovered that its clock was an hour forward,
Please mention Eastbourne Old Town Crier when contacting advertisers
so the picture had actually been taken just after midday. This of course is always the time in every day when the sun reaches its highest, in the south, before it starts to descend towards sunset. Remarkably, I must have caught the first appearance of the sun from the mound since the solar low point, when it rises to only a few degrees above the southern horizon at midday, on December 21st – 1½ months before. Indeed, since the sun would have been working its way down to this level, day by day, for the same period, I must have caught the first glimpse of the sun from the mound for 3 months. This would seem to take us back to Halloween – another Celtic festival (!) and lying between the autumn equinox on 21st September and the winter solstice. The inference I drew from this was the Long Man and the mound were located so as to experience an absence of the sun for the 3 months centred on the winter solstice, with the sun just appearing over the figure’s head at midday at the beginning, and again at the end, of this dark season. To test this I would of course need to be at the platform at midday on 31st October. Unfortunately that day I was abroad but I visited the Long Man on the first clear day afterwards, 4th November, expecting the sun not quite to appear above the hill at midday. To my surprise it remained above the ridge of the Downs, over the Long Man’s head, for a good half hour either side of midday! Clearly at Halloween it must have been even higher, for a few minutes longer.
Due South Ridge of Windover Hill

Sun 12.00 21st Dec
Sea Level
Interestingly, the exact half way date between the 21st September equinox and the 21st December solstice is actually November 9th, 43 days from each. This then, rather than Halloween, must be the day when the sun disappears – as seen from the mound – for the winter. The evidence for a seasonal solar significance for the Long Man, as at Stonehenge, is therefore persuasive. Unfortunately though it takes us no closer to solving the mystery! While it makes an Anglo-Saxon origin a bit less likely, it supports a Tudor fake as much as a Neolithic origin; and of course the mound could have been constructed much later to create the effect. So excavating the mound, which I believe no-one has ever done, could give us the key to the riddle of the Long Man. Philip Pavey
I visited again on 14th November, however, and this time the sun did not clear the hill at midday, and the mound remained in shadow throughout. It was necessary to go about 40 yards north of the mound before the sun could be seen. So the crucial day, when the sun would have been just visible momentarily from the mound at noon, must have been a day between the 4th and the 14th.

The Way of SUMMER
(Maintaining the growth of life) The 3 months of summer Are called prospering and developing the flower. The Qi of Heaven and Earth Intertwine, The 10,000 beings flower and bring forth fruit At night, one goes to bed, at dawn one gets up. One does not let oneself be overcome by the sun, Exerting the will, but without violence, Assisting the brilliance of beauty and strength Which thus fulfil their promise. One must assist the flow of Qi which likes to go to the exterior. This corresponds With the summer Qi. it is the Way That maintains the growth of life. To go countercurrent, would injure the heart. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Summer is associated with the energy (Qi) of the heart. Every summer is the summer of love! The ancient Chinese concluded that the heart was responsible for the circulation of blood, but the notion of the heart’s mental and spiritual functions are about creativity, bearing newness into being and tolerance of change. The heart connects us to “the divine” and “the will of heaven”, bestowing on us feelings of unity and joy. This sense of well being is visible by a radiance in the face, glitter in the eyes, alertness, and our voice. In conditions of the heart the eyes and complexion are often dull. The heart is very closely related to sleep so a restful sleep depends on a healthy heart. Heart Imbalance brings about palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, poor memory, agitation or lack of joy and disturbed sleep. The heart is nourished through openness and connection with others. Contemplation of nature, prayer and ritual allow a deep heart connection. A meditative practice allows an openness to allow the heart to receive and the brain to cease its endless chatter. Poetry,
music and respectful celebrations of life are also good for the heart. Nourishing the heart through food should be a joyful experience, creating a welcoming atmosphere to eat, sharing food with friends or family, with candles or flowers on the table. Food prepared with loving kindness and food eaten in gratitude will always taste better. Foods which are bitter nourish the heart, salads such as rocket, dandelion root drinks, germ and bran of grains. Use plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables, especially eaten outdoors. Edible flowers are also said to touch the heart, which have been made popular recently by chef, Hugh Fernley Whittingstall. Foods with red pigment such as tomatoes, peppers, cherries and a little red wine, and meats such as heart, black pudding taken in moderation may be strengthening to the heart, although taken in excess will cause sluggishness in summer. Overall, eating less and lightly on hot days is in tune with summer eating. Refreshing foods such as melon and cucumber for example, keep us from over heating, as the heart loathes heat. On the other hand, iced drinks, fridge cold foods and ice cream are best taken in moderation as they quell the digestive process and ultimately one of our sources of Qi! Qi Gong in the park will be starting again from Thursday 29th May from 9.15am at Old Town Rec. Check website for dates. Gong is integral to Chinese Medicine to relax the mind and cultivate Qi through movement.
