Magnificent Motors RETURNS

4th - 5th May, Western Lawns

From Bugattis to Bentleys and Cadillacs to Ferraris, owners of a range of quirky and classic cars, bikes and buses will be coming together to exhibit their vehicles at what has become one of the UK’s biggest free motor spectaculars. This year the event, sponsored by A-Plan Insurance, is expected to be even bigger, as hundreds of vehicles together with live bands, stalls and attractions descend on the Western Lawns for a vintage Bank Holiday weekend. The festival jump-starts with The Parade of Motors at 10am each morning, which will start from the eastern end of Eastbourne’s seafront by Fort Fun and head west to the Western Lawns and Wish Tower slopes, where the displays will be open to view from 11am. Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Tourism and Enterprise, Cllr Margaret Bannister said: ‘Magnificent Motors is always an excellent event that indicates the summer season in Eastbourne is officially underway. ‘What better way to spend the Bank Holiday weekend than to watch the fantastic Parade of Motors as they cruise along the seafront, take a ride on one of the fairground rides and then enjoy some super musical entertainment.’ The parade is a traditional feature of the festival and gives exhibitors a chance to take pride in showcasing their gleaming motors, and visitors the opportunity to see the vintage wheels in action. Magnificent Motors has always been a favourite event on the motoring calendar, attracting interest from like-minded motor enthusiasts, with both individuals and car clubs signing up to participate. Vehicles already registered to attend this year range from a 1933 Rolls Royce 20/25 right through to a 2015 Nissan GT-R. This year’s car club entries include the likes of the

Aston Martin Owners Club, Austin Rover & MG Owners Club and the Junkyard Motor Club, travelling far and wide to take part. New this year will be the Electric Car Zone, with local dealers showcasing electric and hybrid powered vehicles; making it the perfect opportunity to find out about the very latest in car technology. Alongside the motors will be some excellent music with a packed entertainment line-up on both days of the event. This includes returning favourite, Zachary Dogwood, alongside the rock and blues sound of East Sussex’s own Ben Westwood, plus keeping the vintage theme alive performing sounds of the ’70s will be Glam Rox. In addition there will be the Continental market close by on Eastbourne seafront. For more information, please visit www. MagnificentMotors.co.uk or call the Eastbourne Tourist Information Centre on 01323 415415.

Organise an Easter Egg Hunt Easter egg hunts are great fun, but it can be hard to come up with original ideas. Depending on the ages of the children the hunt can be easy or fiendishly difficult. Here are some ideas: Bunny Bounce Challenge Set up different activity

posts around the garden or park. At each one, the kids need to complete a physical challenge in order to receive an egg. The challenges could include star jumps, hopping, hula–hooping, or doing a silly dance.

Easter Rhyme Challenge If you’re good at rhymes, create a set of rhyming clues that take the children

2 Central Buildings Sutton Park Road Seaford BN25 1QU Tel: 01323 490048 www.stckitchenandbathrooms.com Mon to Fri: 9am - 5pm, Sat: 9am - 3pm

from one hiding place to another until they find the eggs.

Pirate Bunny Treasure Hunt Create a treasure map which the children have to follow to discover where the chocolate eggs are hidden. Perhaps a paw print or an Easter Egg could mark the spot instead of an X. Easter Craft Challenge Set up different craft activities

around the house or garden. For each cute Easter craft your child completes, they win a little chocolate egg.

Easter Bonnet Competition Challenge the kids to

create their own Easter bonnets from craft materials and old hats (Charity shops are great for cheap hats). You can give chocolate egg prizes for the most creative, the prettiest, the funniest etc.

The Scrambled Egg Hunt This is a great Easter egg hunt idea for older kids. At each station leave cards with single letters written on them, or a set of plastic toy letters. The challenge is to rearrange the letters to spell the word of the next place to find a clue, for example ‘bath’ or ‘shed’ or ‘stairs’. At the final station they get to collect their eggs. Colour-Coded Easter Egg Hunt Use a pack of eggs

in different colours. Give each child a colour. They can only collect eggs which match that colour.

Bunny Vouchers Easter Egg Hunt Some children can’t have chocolate due to a medical condition, so instead of chocolate treats, pop little slips of paper inside plastic eggs. Each slip should have a little treat written on it for your child to claim over the next week or so; things like ‘go trampolining with my dad’, or ‘fly a kite with mummy’. Egg Decoder Hunt Take apart colourful hollow plastic eggs and put them back together with mismatched colours. The children must work in teams to find the eggs hidden around the garden, take them apart and put them back together with the matching colour. The team with the most colour–matched eggs wins the big prize. Happy hunting! Sarah Davey

Working for St Wilfrid’s in memory of her ‘Popsy’ Terry Morris, known as Popsy to his close family, had been under the care of St Wilfrid’s Hospice for quite some time before he died in February 2018. Terry’s granddaughter, Hannah Gadd, didn’t really know much about what the hospice did until the last few months of Terry’s life. She saw, first hand, the work of the Community team – nurses and healthcare assistants who regularly visited Terry at home, as she did herself, to help care for him. Then, when he was admitted to the Inpatient Unit, Hannah saw a different side of the work of St Wilfrid’s. It was then that she wondered if there might be a role for her at the hospice. One of the nurses suggested that Hannah might like to consider joining the new Care at Home team as a Care Assistant. A busy mum with two daughters, Hannah wasn’t sure she’d be able to do it; however, the opportunity to work as a Bank Care Assistant, with flexible shifts helped convince her. After some online certification training and some time spent ‘shadowing’ other team members, Hannah took her place on the team. ‘I’d never thought about doing something like this,’ says Hannah, ‘but I absolutely love it. It is such a privilege to support others through the work. I’ve been with people when they have died and I suppose my experience with Popsy’s death gives me the strength to deal with that and support the families.’ Hannah’s work can involve helping patients with their personal care, with mobility issues or medication. ‘Sometimes it might be help with washing or transferring to and from bed,’ says Hannah. ‘Whatever the patient wants really. It’s anything that allows them to be as independent as possible as they draw closer to the end of life.’ And what does Hannah get out of it? ‘The knowledge that I am helping someone; helping them to be as

independent as they possibly can be during what can be the toughest time in their lives.’ And what would she say to someone who thinks they couldn’t offer anything to the work of St Wilfrid’s? ‘I’d say to them “give it a go” because you never know until you try. I never ever thought I’d be in this kind of job, but I absolutely love it and I wouldn’t change it for the world.’ Hannah, like many of those working or volunteering at St Wilfrid’s, got involved because she saw first hand the care and support a loved family member received. What does she think Popsy would be feeling about what she is doing now? ‘I’m sure he’d be really pleased; he was a big part of the hospice, he absolutely loved it and was a volunteer himself. It really is because of Popsy’s care that I work at St Wilfrid’s and my ambition, now, is to train as a nurse.’ If you would like to find out more about working or volunteering with St Wilfrid’s Hospice, please go to www.stwhospice.org. former Town Crier, Tony Brothers Way back in the mists of time, Tony Brothers joined a number of stage and screen luminaries in a converted garage in Richmond, Surrey, to voice a record of selected scenes of Shakespeare, and it was Robert Hardy in the role of Hamlet who said: ‘Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounc’d it to you, trippingly on the tongue; but if you mouth it, as many of your players do, I had as lief the town-crier speak my lines’. The die was cast, and many years later Tony became the second town crier of what he refers to as ‘The Bible Bound, Sun-drowned town of Eastbourne’. The first of his duties was to open the Enterprise Centre for the late Colin McKenzie, the owner of the Hungry Monk, who later on discovered banoffee pie, now world famous.

His next duty was to open Hawthorns, in a bright yellow uniform. Next came the closing of the Army & Navy Stores, to be replaced by T J Hughes. He then re-opened the Arlington Arms for the new licensees, whose names oddly enough were Goodwin and Sands (Goodwin Sands, Kent), who did realise the implication. Then came the new loos in Ye Old Bakery, with the aid of the late Jimmy Edwards, who made a big splash! Tony rang in 100 years and read the Queen’s messages for two centenarians, one of which was in a care home and the other was named Henry Allingham, at the Grand Hotel, where things nearly didn’t go according to plan. The bell’s clapper had to be retrieved from the floor of the taxi before Tony could do the job! All went well, however, and the Queen got a hearing. The last scene of all that ends this tale is that Tony got the station clock put right and, as he is given to a touch of palsie, here are a few lines written by Tony at the time, to end this tale of tintinnabulation. The time is right in Eastbourne Yes the time is right you see And the faces on the clock tower Do nothing but agree For years and years the station clock Was ever out of synch’ And ’twas for that very reason That I as Town Crier Kicked up an ‘oyez’ stink! So thank you Railtrack, thank you We can now all tell the time By a clock whose all four faces Are at last in rhyme. It should also not be forgotten that Tony took groups of blind folk on many walks with his trusty bell as a sat nav! Apart from his involvement with Eastbourne, in his earlier years Tony worked with some of the big names in theatre, films and television, including Michael Redgrave, John Gielgud, Robert Hardy, Gary Cooper, Gregory Peck, Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Spike Milligan, to name but a few. He can still occasionally be seen on TV in comedies such as Are You Being Served? and The Melting Pot. Photo: Eastbourne Town Crier Tony Brothers outside TJ Hughes.

WHY Does This Programme Get Results?

PELVIC FLOOR FITNESS, CORE RESTORATION & WELLNESS FOR EVERY WOMAN

Is this the year that you take control of your Pelvic Floor, return to jumping/ running/sneezing with confidence? Is this the year that you finally address that nagging low back pain or get a better stronger core and tummy after your babies? If YES, then read on! Enjoy 6 wonderful weeks of movement, nutritional guidance and education regarding your Pelvic Floor, Core and women’s fitness/wellness at whatever life phase you’re in on this unique Holistic Core Restore® ‘Everywoman‘ programme. The programme is adaptable for virtually all women and is designed to ‘bring you back home’ to your amazing body with your Pelvic and Core Health at the centre of our focus.

This Programme is for you if you answer ‘YES’ to any of these questions… l Are

you a woman who wants to have a stronger and better functioning Pelvic Floor that does its job when you jump, sneeze, cough, laugh or run?

l Are

you a woman who wants to reconnect to your Core and have a better looking and stronger tummy?

l Are

you a woman who has ‘lower back pain’ issues and been told is due to a ‘weak Core’ and so you need an easy-to-do and time-efficient exercise programme that actually works?

l Have

you been performing your ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises fairly regularly but still don’t have the confidence in your Pelvic Floor you think you should?

l Do

you have a small Diastasis Recti (Tummy Gap) after Pregnancy (no matter how long ago) that you want to heal?

l Do

you want to return to jogging, running or more athletic activities but lack confidence because of small leaks?

14

In short, those ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises also known as Kegels simply aren’t the whole story. Your Pelvic Floor and Core muscles don’t exist in isolation and separate to the movements of your whole body and your breath. And so for your Pelvic Floor and your entire Core to work as it was designed to, we need to re-introduce it to the rest of your body and get it to do its job in time with your breath and movement.

What are the next steps once you have signed up? When you’re sure you want to join the programme you’ll be asked to complete our online HCR® PreScreening to ensure that this safe and ‘conservative’ exercise-based programme is right for you. You’ll then connect with your Coach, Denise to discuss the Pre-Screening and go through a few simple tests for your Core Function with a 1:1 screening/meeting. You’ll receive your HCR® Client Education Booklet and the key items of fitness kit required for the course and begin your journey to awesome Pelvic and Core Health and function. There are a maximum of 12 places on each course, so if you truly feel this programme is for you, please don’t delay in getting in touch for more information.

experience the wonder of chestnut tree house’s new walk Chestnut Tree House, the children’s hospice for Sussex and South East Hampshire, is bringing a brand new walk to Eastbourne this summer, and it promises to be an evening of magic and wonder. Taking place on Saturday 15th June 2019 and setting off from the Redoubt Fortress in Eastbourne, the walk is set to offer a unique experience. ‘The Wonder Walk is a 10-mile challenge that combines a stunning seafront and harbour route with interactive pit-stops to leave you feeling uplifted and inspired,’ explains Evie White, Events Fundraiser for Chestnut Tree House. Setting off at 7pm, participants will walk from day to night, reflecting the 24-hour nature of the care Chestnut Tree House offers to local children and families. Three interactive stops along the route will give walkers the chance to experience first-hand some of the fun that children and families have when they are cared for by Chestnut Tree House. ‘The thing we hear time and time again is how much the children we care for enjoy their time with us, so we wanted to bring that joy to more people,’ says Evie. ‘Our aim is to combine the magic of twilight and Eastbourne’s stunning promenade with our interactive pit-stops to create an evening like no other.’ The walk will finish back at the Redoubt, where walkers can celebrate their achievement in style. ‘All of our

walkers will have achieved something wonderful,’ says Evie. ‘As well as walking 10 miles, they will have raised vital funds for Chestnut Tree House, meaning we can continue to offer care and support for local children with life-shortening conditions and their families. We are planning a big celebration at the end of the walk to mark that achievement.’ The Wonder Walk replaces the popular Night To Remember, Chestnut Tree House’s midnight walk which took place every year between 2010 and 2017 and raised over £550,000 for the charity. The event didn’t take place last year, and Chestnut Tree House spent the time speaking to previous participants about how they could make the walk bigger and better. ‘We have kept all the things previous participants told us they loved about Night to Remember,’ says Evie. ‘The Wonder Walk will keep our 10-mile seafront route, our wonderful volunteer marshals and the chance to walk with friends and family, but we have added in some exciting extra elements that we hope people will love. We will also be opening it up to everyone aged 10 or over so that people can walk with their friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.’ The Wonder Walk will take place on Saturday 15th June at 7pm at the Redoubt Fortress. The walk is open to everyone aged 10 and over (anyone aged under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult) and earlybird registration (before 15th April) costs £15 per person. forming a shamanic group in seaford Shamanism is an Earth-centred way of life and is as relevant in today’s society as it has been the world over for thousands of years. A practitioner learns to use imagination and creativity to work with nature and access both wisdom and healing for ourselves, use in the community and in the environment that is our Planet Earth. Modern shamanism emphasizes:

power, which permeates the universe and can then use it in healing work.

Healing: Sickness in Shamanic terms is due to an imbalance, lack of harmony and connection.

Spirit: We can reach this ‘Spirit world’ using part of our Community: By tradition the Shaman works for the minds/consciousness, which we seem to have forgotten. It entails making sense of subtle ‘prompts’, using our imagination, intuition and creativity.

community and their environment. These two are so closely connected and the wellbeing of the one influences the wellbeing of the other.

Power/ Energy: Shamanism works with energy.

Hilary: I have been practising Shamanism for over 20 years since I was lucky enough to meet Jonathan Horwitz who founded the Scandinavian Center for Shamanic Studies. During this time, I have learned to work with these Shamanic concepts, deepening my spiritual connection with nature and with community. Robin: In the 80s I worked with a psychic healer and joined her groups, which combined meditation and ritual. In the 2000s I trained to be a child therapist and ran relaxation/meditation groups. In 2016 I trained to be a Reiki practitioner and I began learning Shamanism three years ago. Since I learned to rattle, drum and journey, Shamanism has impacted on every aspect of my life by giving me the capacity to delve deeper and create stronger, more solid connections to spirit and nature. We would love to form a shamanic community in Seaford where like-minded people could meet, drum and journey together – indoors or in nature. We can teach the basic tools and principles of shamanism to those who would like to join us.. For more information contact Hilary (hilary.miflin@ wanadoo.fr) or Robin (robinshell63@gmail.com). Why Community Spaces Matter Humans are social creatures, and friendship and companionship are as essential to us as food. We like nothing more than to interact with others, whether it’s talking over the garden fence with a neighbour, putting the world to rights over a cup of tea or a long telephone call with a loved one. Social interaction gives us the ‘feel good factor’ and is beneficial to our health, well-being and even our life expectancy! How many of us have enjoyed having a good laugh with an old friend or even those unexpected natters with complete strangers – the kind stranger who helped you find your missing dog, the member of staff in the supermarket who went out of their way to help or the nice chat you had with someone at the bus stop? We value and enjoy these experiences. Sadly, according to government statistics, over 9 million people in the UK are thought to be lonely, with around 200,000 older people not having a conversation with a friend or relative in over a month. The Campaign to End Loneliness says that loneliness is harmful to health and increases the risk of certain heart diseases. It is as damaging as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Loneliness affects all ages and can lead to health issues such as depression, heart disease, stress and insomnia. The provision of welcoming, diverse and inclusive community spaces is essential to any town or city and Eastbourne is no exception. They should reach out to all parts of the community and provide a safe place to meet new people, engage in social activities and ignite new friendships. They can help to tackle the harmful effects of loneliness by bringing people together and creating a sense of community involvement. With advances in technology, changes in our social patterns and the advent of the Internet, smart TV’s and mobile phones, more and more of us are staying indoors and socialising less, with worrying consequences for our emotional and social well-being.

20

At Eden Blue, we have seen first-hand the importance of having a welcoming and friendly community space for people to attend. Many people have told us how much they value having somewhere that they can go to where they feel welcome, where they can meet new people and feel part of a community. We believe that community spaces matter because they can have a positive impact on people’s health, well-being and even their social lives. One of the key principles of Eden Blue has always been to treat everyone as we would like to be treated ourselves. That means being open, friendly and helpful, and making everyone feel valued. Eden Blue is sometimes jokingly referred to as a ‘second home’ by some of our participants, which means they must really feel at home. Since Eden Blue was set up three years ago, we have seen numerous friendships blossom, from the Zumba ladies who stay long after their class to the Eden Blue choir, who can often be found at the pub after choir, talking enthusiastically and occasionally bursting into song! Community spaces matter because they can make a real difference to people’s quality of life. For some, it can be the first step in the right direction. So, whether it is joining a choir, learning to play an instrument, taking up a Yoga class or rekindling a passion for creative writing, there is something out there for everyone. We are fortunate to have many community spaces within easy reach of Old Town, so make the most of all of the opportunities available to you. It could be your best decision yet. towner art gallery

Lothar Götz to transform Towner’s exterior walls into a large-scale artwork to mark the gallery’s 10th anniversary. Towner Art Gallery is pleased to announce that German artist Lothar Götz will transform the exterior walls of the gallery into a large-scale, colourful geometric mural this summer. Götz, who is based in the UK, was chosen from 60 artists and designers from an open call for the Brewers Towner Commission to create an artwork to mark the 10th anniversary of the gallery’s move from its original home in Eastbourne’s Old Town. Drawing on its architecture, angles and unique exterior recesses and alcoves, Götz’s mural – his largest to date – will envelop the length and width of three sides of Towner’s award-winning building. Götz’s work – typically large-scale paintings, drawings and installations that respond to existing architectural structures – has included commissions for South Bank Centre, London (2014) and Leeds Art Gallery (2017). This will be his first major outdoor commission on the south coast and the first time an artist has been commissioned to create an artwork for Towner’s exterior. The Brewers Towner Commission will be rendered in the artist’s signature style, using paint supplied by Brewers Decorator Centres, a national company founded and based in Eastbourne. The commission, which coincides with the launch of the £54m redevelopment of Eastbourne’s Devonshire Quarter, will be in situ for one year. Götz was chosen by a selection panel that included Joe Hill, Director of Towner Art Gallery, Mark Brewer, Chairman of Brewers Decorator Centres, David Dimbleby, Chairman of Towner Art Gallery, Dinah Casson, Deputy Chair of Towner Art Gallery and Kiera Blakey, Curator for Art on the Underground.

22

Lothar Götz said: ‘To paint the entire rendered wall space of Towner Art Gallery offers an amazing canvas, and to realise a painting of that scale in such a prominent public position of Eastbourne really is a kind of dream project for me. The [building’s] façade, with its three-dimensional qualities, will turn the painting into a kind of giant sculpture, addressing the boundaries and crossovers between art and architecture, painting and sculpture, and public and institutional spaces. Visible from several prominent viewpoints of the town with a wide range of different audiences, the painting will conceptually sit somewhere between street art and minimalism/abstraction and therefore hopefully offer a range of diverse viewings and readings.’ Joe Hill, Director at Towner Art Gallery added: ‘We are delighted to commission Lothar Götz to create a new work for the exterior of our building this year, marking our 10th anniversary in this space and utilising the exterior of our building for a unique large-scale artwork for the first time. Götz’s signature style of bright, engaging colours, geometric patterns and bold largescale works will allow visitors and residents to engage with the gallery in a new way this summer.’ Mark Brewer, Chairman of Brewers Decorator Centres said: ‘Brewers Decorator Centres are thrilled to be working on this exciting project with Towner Art Gallery. As a family business that started in Eastbourne in 1904 we feel passionately about the life of the town in all its dimensions, not least the cultural life. Lothar Götz is a worthy winner of this prestigious prize. His dynamic style and use of vibrant colour will transform Towner Art Gallery’s building into a spectacular work of art.’ David Dimbleby, Chair of Trustees at Towner Art Gallery commented: ‘We’re delighted to be celebrating ten years in the Towner gallery building with this exciting commission. Along with the Towner staff and Trust, I’m proud to be working with Brewers Decorator Centres to bring a new temporary public artwork by an artist of Lothar’s calibre to Eastbourne’s visitors and residents. I very much look forward to seeing the finished work when it is unveiled later this year.’ Photos: Lothar Götz in front of his work Double-Take, at the MAC, Belfast 2013. Photo by Jordan Hutchins

Seaford Music Society Afternoon Concert Series Seaford Music Society’s Concert programme continues with two concerts at St Leonard’s Church, Seaford, the family concert in April arranged especially for children, while in May the Consone Quartet – a multi-talented, award-winning string ensemble gives a performance. Seaford Music Society has done it again with a world première of Hey Diddle Fiddle starting at 3pm on Sunday 14th April and lasting about 1 hour. Following on from last year’s sell-out family concert, ‘The Enchanted Violin’, this musical tale joins Gustav the cat as he travels the globe in search of a musical instrument that will allow him to play and dance at the same time! Including dazzling performances from award-winning students from the Royal Academy of Music, and featuring music by Brahms, Albeniz and Mozart, this will be a treat for children of all ages and not to be missed. Children need to bring a cushion! Written and devised by Kate Comberti for Seaford Music Society, the performance will be narrated by Kate Isitt. The concert on Sunday 5th May starting at 3pm promises to be an exciting performance by Consone Quartet, an ensemble which includes Agata and Magdalena playing on violins, Elitsa on viola and George on cello. They are dedicated to exploring Classical and early Romantic repertoire on period instruments. Their recent highlights include an acclaimed debut at London’s Wigmore Hall, performances at numerous other venues such as London, Edinburgh, Cheltenham and Brighton, as well as rapidly gaining recognition internationally. As well as having performed in many European countries most recently the quartet toured South America performing in Bolivia and Peru. There have been outstanding reviews of Consone Quartet’s concerts during 2017 – ‘ Impeccable. A group to watch,’ (The York Press); ‘Immaculate playing from a prizewinning quartet,’ (Westmorland Gazette); ‘Dreamy but also thoroughly engaging,’ (Arts Beat

Open Your Garden

Many people get the bug and open their gardens year after year. Most people start by opening once in a year, but many go on to open twice a year, to show off their garden in different seasons.

This month I’m going to talk about the National Gardens Scheme. This wonderful initiative gives garden-lovers unique access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales. It also raises money for nursing and health charities through admission fees, teas and cake. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

You don’t need a big garden. There are some tiny plots in the NGS. What matters is quality, character and interest. NGS will support you all the way with their network of helpful, friendly volunteers. Initially you’ll be visited by one of the team during the season you feel your garden would look best.

By opening your garden to visitors, you’ll give people a great day out, and raise money to help those in need. Even better, you’ll connect with a community of like-minded garden owners, all passionate about their beautiful gardens.

Happy Gardening! Rachael Leverton

Is your garden worth visiting? Do friends and family wax lyrical about your plot? Do neighbours ask for advice and cuttings? Do you sometimes wish you could show other people the result of all your hard work? If you answered yes to these questions, then it’s very likely other people would love to see your garden too.

And if you don’t feel your garden is worthy of being part of the scheme, why not visit open gardens in your area to gain inspiration, hints and tips, make new gardening friends, and raise a bit of money for charity. Call 01483 211535 to speak to one of the NGS team, or visit www.ngs.org.uk

hyacinth

The hyacinth is a popular spring bulb – its scent and colours make it a favourite for the house or garden. The genus name Hyacinthus was attributed to French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (18th century) from the Greek word Hyakinthos. It is considered to be native to the eastern Mediterranean regions but has become widely naturalised throughout Europe and worldwide. Over 2,000 cultivars of the Dutch or common hyacinth were developed in the Netherlands, its main commercial producer. The single spike of fragrant flowers range from red to orange to violet however Hyacinth bulbs are poisonous as they contain oxalic acid and can cause mild skin irritation so take care when handling them. In Roman Catholic tradition, the hyacinth represents prudence, constancy, desire of heaven, peace of mind and is associated with spring and rebirth.

in with our regular walking days, help us conduct a street audit in your area, or to join our group of Walking Friends, it all starts with a few simple clicks.

LIVING STREETS EASTBOURNE Living Streets Eastbourne wants to improve our walking environment and inspire people to walk more. Walking is a simple answer to some of our biggest challenges: physical and mental health issues, social isolation, pollution and congestion. As a nation we are walking a third less today than we did 20 years ago. Within a couple of generations we’ve effectively engineered walking out of our lives. Our group of local volunteers has been working in Old Town since September 2018, starting off with Walk to School Wednesday (W2SW), part of a campaign to encourage children to walk to school. Since then, walking rates on a Wednesday have increased by 14%. W2SW now includes three schools in Old Town and we have ambitious plans to extend this to schools across Eastbourne. The behavioural change this encourages means that children build walking into their daily routine for the future, with all of the benefits that brings. If you are interested in getting your child’s school involved, look for the W2SW toolkit on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/eastbournelivingstreets). Most excitingly, 20th-24th May is national Walk to School Week. With the weather improving (hopefully!) it’s a great opportunity to change your routine and try something different with this 5-day walking challenge. To find out more about Walk to School Week, and how to have fun with your walks, visit our Facebook page. Everyone at Living Streets Eastbourne is a volunteer, most of us with full-time jobs or other responsibilities, so we need as many people to join and help us as possible. There is a wide range of opportunities to get involved, but the first step is to visit our Facebook page and join our email list. Whether you think you might be able to help by encouraging your child’s school to join
