Amazing Futures launches in EastBOURNE A new project for young people with additional needs has launched in Eastbourne, hosted by local charity Amaze. ‘Amazing Futures’ supports young people aged 14-25 with special educational needs & disabilities (SEND) going through the transition to adulthood. Peer support training and group activities are available on Thursday evenings, running out of the DC3 Project Space in Eastbourne. These sessions have been designed by young people with SEND to help young people with additional needs develop new social networks and connections within their community, and grow their knowledge, confidence and life skills to improve their future options. The scheme has been running in Brighton & Hove since 2017. Young people involved have said: ‘I joined the group because I have anxiety, depression, learning disability and struggled with socialising. I didn’t know there were other people like me.’ ‘Young people need to know what (support) is out there – independent of Mum and Dad.’ ‘Being an Amazing Futures Peer Supporter has definitely helped me get more confident and get more skills.’ The Eastbourne project is currently recruiting young people and young adults to become Amazing Futures peer supporters. Following training, peer supporters will work 1:1 with young people with SEND and help run group activity sessions. Young people joining the activity sessions will ultimately decide what they want to do in these group meetings, but the emphasis is on having fun. It’s expected there will be lots of arts and crafts, a focus on health and wellbeing, and support for young people around getting a job. Claire Piper is new in post as the East Sussex Amazing Futures Project Co-ordinator. She has been working

in local community-based arts projects for many years and is a parent carer of a teenage son with additional needs. She says: ‘It’s been great to see how the Amazing Futures groups in Brighton and Hove run, and just how much young people are responsible for planning what happens and the difference this is making to their lives. I can’t wait to get to work with young people with SEND across East Sussex to develop their Amazing Futures.” With support from East Sussex County Council and Global Make Some Noise, the programme is open to anyone across the county but initially will run out of Eastbourne. For more information and to get involved, please contact Claire Piper, East Sussex Amazing Futures Co-ordinator on claire@amazesussex.org.uk 07484 915038, Amaze, Highlight House, 8 St Leonards Road, Eastbourne BN21 3UH.

The real story of Santa Claus? Most of us remember learning the truth about Father Christmas, and discovering our parents were engaged in an elaborate web of deceit. An old man dressed in red climbing down a chimney? Flying reindeer? The North Pole? How could we believe such stories! But according to one theory, the myths about Santa Claus aren’t so far from the truth. What’s more, it’s all connected to a mushroom you can find in woodlands right on our doorstep.

The Fly Agaric mushroom

With its bright red colouring and distinctive spots, you’re sure to recognise the Fly Agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria). It’s found in woodlands under beech or pine trees. Stories of Santa Claus can be traced back to medieval communities in Siberia, near the Arctic Circle. These nomadic people prized the Fly Agaric mushroom for its powerful hallucinogenic properties. The mushrooms would be collected by shamans, who dried and delivered them – perhaps to celebrate the winter solstice (which falls around the same time as Christmas). So, we have old men, living near the North Pole and delivering presents – is this starting to sound familiar?

Presents under the Christmas tree?

The shamans dried the mushrooms on the branches of the pine trees in bags or stockings and hung them by the fireplace to dry. Could this be the origin of our traditions of hanging decorations on Christmas trees and presents in stockings? These tribal peoples lived in yurts, and because, in winter, there were often several feet of snow blocking the entrances, the shamans would climb through a hole in the roof to deliver their special packets of dried mushrooms during the winter solstice – much like Father Christmas coming down the chimney. Photos: Illustrated and photographed Fly Agaric mushrooms.

6

Flying reindeer?

But what about the flying reindeer? Well, it seems that reindeer are partial to the Fly Agaric mushrooms, and eat them if they find them. Because of the mushrooms’ hallucinogenic properties, the reindeer exhibit wild and wacky behaviour – jumping or leaping … or flying. This theory may seem far-fetched, but early images of Santa Claus (before he was smartened up for modern audiences) shows a distinctly elfish, or shaman-like figure. So maybe Santa did indeed come from the North Pole, climb through chimneys, hang presents from stockings by the fireplace and have magic reindeer?

Talking trees?

Whether you believe this theory or not, the truth about the Fly Agaric mushroom is perhaps even stranger. This mushroom is one of many species known as mycorrhizal fungi. The ‘mushroom’ we can see is a tiny part of the organism. Underground, networks of fungal threads stretch for miles in every direction. Scientific research has shown that trees use these fungal networks as a sort of underground internet, sharing nutrients and messages with their neighbours. Plants even use the underground fungal networks to warn each other of attack by viruses or pests.

Where to find the Fly Agaric:

The Fly Agaric mushroom can be found between late summer to early winter in woodlands amongst birch or pine. A good place to look is Vert Woods Community Woodlands – if you visit vertwoods. co.uk you’ll find regular walks and activities to help you discover the woods. However, if you’re lucky enough to find a Fly Agaric mushroom, please don’t touch as they’re highly toxic. We often complain about the commercialisation of Christmas, but I’m not sure I’d want to go back to the old days of gifting hallucinogenic mushrooms. Chocolates might be better. CONCENTUS SINGS at CHRISTMAS

(and all year round!)

Never heard Concentus sing? Then you are in for a real treat! You may have missed them fulfilling their exclusive invitation to sing at the opening of the Beacon (the new name for the extended Arndale Centre) in November, but you are still in time to attend the ‘Concentus Sings Christmas’ Concert on 15th December at 4pm at St Saviour’s Church, South Street, BN21 4PA. You will hear the warm professionalism of the choir and the amazing range of music they sing. There are other opportunities to see and hear Concentus before Christmas: 17th December sees them taking a festive sleigh carol-singing around Old Town; and they are helping to open the Christmas Market on 1st December (3pm - 4pm) and to close it on 23rd December. (3.30pm - 4.30/5pm), when they invite you to join them in ‘Concentus’ Big Community Carol Sing’. Have you always fancied singing in a choir but don’t read music? Not much experience or a bit nervous of trying? Well, then Concentus – Eastbourne’s friendly choir – is the choir for you! Why not come along on Monday 7th January (or on a Monday soon after that) around 7.15pm to the JPK Project (Church Street, BN21 1HP) to give it a try and see how much you enjoy that wonderful ‘lift’ singing with others gives? Concentus pulls out all the stops to make prospective members welcome. You will be warmly greeted at the door, introduced to a ‘buddy’ who will show you the ropes and generally look after you as you settle. And you may well find that you already know some of the members. Concert tickets cost £10 and £5 for under 16s and are available from: Box Office 07789 343514/07920 430162; Semantics, 33 Grove Road; Eastbourne Tourist Information Office; www.ticketsource.co.uk/concentus or on the door. For more information on the choir and on joining visit www. concentus-sings.com or call Claire – 07920 430162 or Sue – 07789 343514.

community wise Our name is one of the first things we tell people about ourselves. Parents invest substantial thought into the given name of a child because they know the importance of a name. A first name is usually for life, whereas surnames can change. A woman, on marriage, may take on her husband’s surname and this signifies a change of identity. Asking someone to tell you the history about their name is a profitable exercise. You may learn about family associations and history. Children are often named after uncles, aunts and grandparents. There is a power associated with being able to name someone or something, and it has an associated responsibility to get it right. Despite Shakespeare’s contention: ‘What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet,’ there’s significant research to

demonstrate that people do pay attention to names and will often buy brand-name products instead of generic own-brand items because there is something about some names, or brands, that seems preferable. Branding, like naming, is also a form of marketing. The word means ‘to burn’ and originally a brand was a mark of ownership – livestock, objects and even slaves. Now it also refers to a name, logo or slogan associated with a product, place or service. A brand is a kind of promise. It’s there to tell your customers what they can expect and differentiates one item from a competitor’s. It comes about because of the nature of the business or organisation and tells people who you want to be and who people perceive you to be. At Community Wise our name represents everything we stand for. Community Wise, the local community centre in Old Town, is known as a place where people meet to experience personal growth individually and collectively. The Snowman Spectacular Christmas Appeal 2018

for Chestnut Tree House

My son Craig is my amazing little man. He has a progressive neurological condition which means he is very fragile, has no independent movement and needs constant, round-the-clock care. But Craig has a rich, rewarding life – thanks to the dedicated, expert care he receives from Chestnut Tree House, your local children’s hospice. Today I’d like to ask for your help in bringing a magical Christmas to all the children this wonderful charity will be caring for over the holidays. From the moment

12

we set foot in the hospice, I knew we were in the right place. We found a place of light, of fun, of laughter that was to become our second home, and Craig’s favourite place in the whole world. Chestnut’s care gives Craig the strength to fight on. This year will be his 10th Christmas since his diagnosis – when we were told he would only have a year to live. This year, with help from The Snowman™, we’ll be leading a fundraising campaign to find the £116,450 Chestnut will spend on care over Christmas for lifelimited children like Craig. One hour’s nursing care for one child costs £35.70. A gift from you this Christmas could allow another child, another family, to know Chestnut’s extraordinary, unique care. Please, support Chestnut Tree House this Christmas. Because your donation will bring wonderful moments into a local child’s life this Christmas, just like the snowman did in Raymond Briggs’ famous story. To donate online visit: www.justgiving.com/ChestnutChristmas-2018.

With best wishes to you and your family.

Emma Mason Gallery, 3 Cornfield Terrace, Eastbourne BN21 4NN, Tel: 01323 727545 www.emmamason.co.uk This year, alongside their limited edition prints, Emma Mason Gallery will be showing work by ceramicist Katrin Moye. Each Christmas the gallery likes to show something new that they love and that they think will fit well alongside the original prints in the gallery. This year Emma Mason Gallery is working with ceramicist Katrin Moye. Katrin is well known for her intricately decorated functional ceramics. After a year as Artist in Residence at Nottingham University’s Lakeside arts centre, Katrin is taking her work in a new direction – the first results of which will be showcased in this exhibition of her work. Katrin grew up in Eastbourne and first discovered making ceramics whilst studying Art Foundation at Hastings College in 1986. Katrin Moye and Emma Mason are delighted to be working together to show Katrin’s new work in the town where she grew up. Katrin’s ceramics are wheel thrown, hand built and occasionally press moulded. The surface decoration is applied with coloured slips and underglazes, using traditional slipware techniques such as painting, trailing, sponge printing and hand-cut paper resist. She began her career in 2005 making domestic ware, and since then her work has become highly sought after both in the UK and internationally.

Response’, as well as looking in depth at the unique relationships people have with special objects. Katrin studied English and History of Art at Nottingham University, and her new body of work is focused on bringing themes around literature, narrative and the link between writers and artists together in three dimensions. Katrin is very interested in the relationships that people have with domestic (and other) items – ordinary things used every day that take on a significance for their owner in terms of the memories and associations connected with them. The power of nostalgia, which seems to her an interestingly emotional response, is directly connected with how items can conjure up a particular memory for an individual. In this way, the same object can be ‘read’ as many different objects, depending on the person who is looking at the object. Katrin loves the way that people who buy her work embark on a relationship that is uniquely their own with something that she has made.

She was awarded a grant from Arts Council England to fund a period of time in creative research and development in 2012 and, since then, Katrin’s work has moved towards making larger scale and individual collectors’ pieces that are more detailed and complex. Her residency at Lakeside Arts Centre in 2017-18 further developed her work and explored ideas around the literary theory known as ‘Reader To advertise in Eastbourne Town Crier please call 01273 710793 or email fran@theoldtowncrier.co.uk

So here it is – Merry Christmas

by Julian O’Vegetables

There are things that are Christmas constants, for example turkey and sprouts. And poor old Noddy Holder, lead singer of the 1970’s glam rock band Slade, who, since 1973, has endured pranksters sneaking up behind him and bellowing: ‘IT’S CHRISTMAAAS!’ So I’m sticking with tradition and talking turkey again. Plus a flavoursome soup as a starter.

Chestnut and smoky bacon soup

Roast turkey with sage & onion butter and Marsala gravy

Serves 8 (BBC Good Food website)

Ingredients

Serves 6 (The Times)

Ingredients

A knob of butter; 200g smoked back bacon, rind removed and roughly chopped; 1 onion, diced; 400g vacuum packed chestnuts (or freshly roasted and shelled, if you prefer); 800ml chicken stock; sea salt and freshly ground black pepper; double cream, to garnish (optional).

Method

Answers on page 41

Melt the butter in a large pan over a medium heat. Add the chopped bacon to the pan and sauté it until well coloured – but don’t allow it to turn crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon, leaving behind the fat. Add the onion to the pan and sauté until it softens.

20

At this stage return the bacon to the pan with the chestnuts and chicken stock, and bring the mixture to the boil. Simmer the soup for 5 minutes, then remove it from the heat and blend it until smooth, adding a little water if it’s too thick for your liking. Season to taste before ladling into bowls.

7kg/15lb 4oz fresh turkey; 2 onions, halved; 1 lemon, quartered; 75g soft butter; 3 tbsp finely chopped fresh sage; 2 tbsp plain flour; 200ml marsala wine or Madeira; 400-500ml/14fl oz-18fl oz hot chicken stock; 1 tbsp cranberry jelly.

Method

Heat oven to 170°C/150°C fan/gas 3-4 and place the turkey in a large roasting tin. Tuck three of the onion halves and the lemon quarters into the cavity and season. Cover with foil, make sure there’s plenty of space between the turkey and foil for the air to circulate and seal the edges tightly so that no steam escapes. Roast for 4 hours. Meanwhile, finely chop the remaining onion half, and mix with the butter and sage. Take the turkey out of the oven and raise the temp to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6. Brush the sage and onion butter all over the turkey and return to the oven, uncovered, for 45 mins until crisp and dark golden. Transfer the turkey to a warm serving plate, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 30 mins. Tip the juices out of the pan into a bowl, scoop the buttery oil from the surface into a separate bowl. Spoon 2 tbsp of this oil back into the tin and return to the heat. Stir the flour into the tin using a wooden spoon, scraping the residue off the bottom of the tin. Cook for 2 mins, then stir in the wine and bring to the boil. Make the reserved turkey juices up to 500ml using hot chicken stock and pour into the tin. Bring to the boil and simmer for a few mins, then add cranberry jelly. Keep warm until ready to serve.

Gathering winter fuel.

The Robin: Everyone’s favourite festive psychopath Americans have chosen to align themselves with a mighty eagle. India has elected the elegant peacock. But we’ve voted an antisocial, murderous ball of anger as Britain’s national bird. So what is it about the robin that we find so endearing? That famous orange-red breast, a flaming flash of feathers in a bland back garden of blackbirds, sparrows and starlings is certainly striking.

Surely the greatest coup that the robin has pulled off is cornering the lucrative Christmas market – especially considering the only other bird we associate with Christmas is beheaded and stuffed into an oven at gas The robin in mark 4. This Christmas full song. connection is linked to the red tunic plumage of Victorian postmen. Robins were pictured carrying the post on the earliest Christmas cards and since then have joined Santa and snowmen as Christmas A-listers. Attractive, friendly and festive – everyone loves a robin. Well, everyone it seems apart from other robins. Robins hate other robins. They’re highly territorial and, once invisible boundaries have been established, robins will rule their kingdom like feathered tyrants. They’ll sing their washing-line war cries from dawn to dusk or patrol the garden noisily tick-tick-tick-ing like a tiny timebomb. Female robins are just as tyrannical and will also sing and scuffle – unusual amongst female birds. Robins will fight off other birds – no matter what colour– but when a robin sees red, it sees red. Robins will peck, batter and kick any other robin that puts as much as a feather across the line. But around Christmas there are subtle signs of a ceasefire. For robins Christmas is a time for peace, hope and worms. Here’s hoping you have a similar Christmas full of peace and hope. As for the worms? I’m sure we’ll all open a whole new can in 2019. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

A view from the Potting Shed

W

ith Christmas just around the corner I’m often asked what houseplants plants I recommend as gifts. Here are my top five:

plant in a light spot and keep the compost just moist. Hyacinthus orientalis ‘Ostara’ is a stunning hyacinth with deep-blue flowers, powerfully scented and particularly nice when planted in a bowl or basket. Christmas hyacinths are ‘forced’ to flower earlier than they would naturally. They need a cool spot, preferably no more than 13ºC, so that they do not flop. The bulbs can be planted in the garden afterwards so will continue to provide pleasure in future years.

Hippeastrum/Amaryllis (right) – is a remarkable bulb, which produces 60cm/2ft tall, fleshy drainpipe stems and flamboyant trumpet flowers up to 20cm/8in across. ‘Red Lion’ with deep scarlet flowers; ‘Apple Blossom’ with pink-tinged white flowers, and ‘Christmas Gift’ with plain white flowers, are readily available. You can buy them as plant-it-yourself kits, or as ready-planted gifts.

Schlumbergera x buckleyi, the Christmas cactus, is a perennial favourite. It has protruding stamens at the end of succulent, flattened leaves and pretty flowers. It likes high humidity while flowering, so mist it regularly it with a fine spray of clean water and feed it monthly with a high-potash feed. When it’s finished flowering put the

Cyclamen persicum is wonderfully decorative. The flowers range from white, through pink, to red. This is probably a gift for a more experienced gardener as persuading it to flower again can be a challenge, but it can be done. Keep it in full light in winter, at a steady 13ºC – 16ºC. Give it a liquid feed fortnightly while it is in flower. Water less as the stems start to bend and collapse, then keep it completely dry for three months during its dormant period. Gently introduce water again as new leaves appear.

Don’t wrap plants, just tie a big bow around the pot. It’s a thoughtful touch to provide printed or hand-written instructions for aftercare. Make sure any living plant is well watered before you hand it over. They will probably be a bit neglected over the festive period, but a good watering should make sure that they last past New Year. Happy festive gardening. Rachael Leverton

what

Citrus bushes make interesting presents. Sold at this time of year with both flowers and developing fruit, they are deliciously scented. Lemon varieties ‘Meyer’ and ‘Four Seasons’ are lovely, but also consider calamondin oranges. The plant should be kept in a light, frost-free spot over the winter with a minimum night temperature of 5ºC, then in the summer the pot can be moved outside.

Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ is not a houseplant but it makes a fabulous gift. It flowers from November, while the leaves are still on, through the winter. The pink flowers are scented and a few sprigs in a small vase at this time of year are just joyous. It is totally hardy so is great for the non-green-fingered, and can be planted out of a pot at any time, if the ground isn’t frozen.

JOBS TO DO IN Dec & jan

3 Give gooseberry and currant bushes a winter

prune when the leaves have fallen, cut out the dead, diseased or damaged branches and any shoots that cross over. 3Check the grease bands around fruit trees and replace with new if necessary, to stop the codling moths climbing up the trees to lay their eggs. 3 Fallen leaves around plants and shrubs act as moisture traps so need removing.

Tea at Church Lane Tea Room, Seaford

Challinor Hall Limited

Imagine, all my dreams on a plate of full-fat desire. After all when you are invited to sample afternoon tea at 2pm it would be rude to refuse, especially when Steve talks you through no less than six varieties of unctuousness. So I’m glad I didn’t pass up on the invitation and had forgone lunch.

PLANS DRAWN

Prepared for all types of extensions, loft conversions, new build, residential and commercial.

My first taste was of a peanut butter, caramel and chocolate layer cake topped with popcorn. Told it was gluten free (GF), I was amazed. For anyone who thinks the sponge is just there to separate the fillings this one’s for you, and I’m thinking of my friend Katie here… Continuing with the GF, the chocolate brownie was rich, velvety and, um, chocolatey, and the lemon drizzle as Fran said, ‘fluffy.’ The same could be said for the flavoursome coffee and walnut, while the Bakewell was much lighter than usual. So that just leaves the apricot crumble with its sharply piquant fruit and very short topping. Now, Fran and I were lucky enough to have a selection plate of delicious slices to choose from, but if we could only go for one what would it be? To go with Fran’s English breakfast tea, after much consideration she opted for the peanut butter, caramel and chocolate layer cake topped with popcorn. And me? No contest because I had already polished off all the remaining apricot crumble. All I can say is, skip lunch to feast on tea in this pretty little tea room that combines nostalgia with modern flavours... and as luck would have it, Steve’s cakes can be ordered to buy too – perfect for that special occasion!

Central to the exhibition is an immersive 360° film experienced through a Virtual Reality headset* whilst the viewer is seated on a foam bed sculpture. The film surrounds viewers with the contorted, continuously shifting movement of bodies. With a soundtrack combining spoken word, an instrumental score written in collaboration with composers Mica Levy and Coby Sey, and the London Contemporary Orchestra, the film reflects on the altered states of the self, including the impact trauma and grief can have on our physical and mental states. In an intensely personal yet universal exploration of the experience of romance, psychosis and loss, the work marks the first time Perry has chosen to address the tragic, recent suicide of her best friend and collaborator. Other works in the exhibition extend Perry’s interest in car modification, including a pulsating large-scale audio sculpture – which is reimagined to occupy Towner’s expansive gallery spaces – incorporating stretched car body wrap and subwoofer speakers, enabling sound frequencies to create distorted patterns upon the mirrored surface of the sculpture, altering the viewer’s reflected self and surroundings. In new wall-based pieces, Perry combines her distinctive silk screen printing technique with digital photographs, car lacquer and painting. Hannah Perry GUSH is conceived by Somerset House, in partnership with Towner Art Gallery. * The film explores adult themes and includes some scenes of partial nudity. We would suggest a minimum age of 16. Parental/carer discretion is advised. For support relating to the themes of the film please visit samaritans.org, mind.org.uk or uksobs.org.
