A view from the Potting Shed Recycle your wastewater

I like to consider myself an eco-gardener. I use few pesticides and I recycle, upcycle and repurpose whenever I can. Like many people, I own and use several water butts, which are a fantastic way to utilise all the lovely free rainwater nature provides. Over the past few years I’ve been reading and researching about other sources of water too. I’m talking about grey water. But what is grey water and how can gardeners make use of it? Grey water, for those not in the know, is any kind of household wastewater apart from toilet water (which is considered ‘black water’, and which should definitely not be recycled by the average gardener). You can reclaim water from your washing machine or dishwasher, but this can prove costly and time consuming. The best advice for us amateur eco-gardeners is ‘keep it simple’, especially in the first instance. Basically, this means water

o

JOBS TO DO IN Aug & Sept

3Finish harvesting what’s left of any ‘early’

potatoes and start to dig up the first of your ‘main’ crop. 3Onions are ready for harvesting when the foliage collapses and the neck is not soft and sappy. Lift the bulbs with a fork. Leave on the surface to dry. Take under cover if the weather is wet. 3Slip a tile or something flat under courgettes, marrows and squashes to keep off the soil.Try training courgettes up a pole, tie plant carefully to avoid damaging it. 3Start deadheading Fuchsias and remove all seedpods. If left on these pods will sap the energy of the plant and it will stop flowering. 10

from the kitchen sink, the bath or shower, or paddling pool. Getting grey water to the garden is not difficult. In the case of washing-up water, simply use a removable plastic bowl in the sink which can be carried out. For baths and paddling pools, ask at your garden centre or local DIY store for a water siphon hand pump. All you have to do is prime the siphon with a couple of squeezes then let the water run out into your temporary storage containers. Once you have the grey water you need to clean it before using it in the garden. This involves filtering it into a large watering can through a piece of fleece or muslin to remove any debris and obvious residue. The water should then be left to cool. It needs to be used within 24 hours to prevent bacterial build-up. Now that many of us are on water meters, recycling our water makes both good environmental and sound economic sense too.

Top Tips

Keep it simple – It is possible to buy special kits to convert all your home’s grey water for garden-usage, but these can prove expensive. You’re more likely to try something that’s cheap and easy. If you really get into water-recycling though, then go for it! Think natural – Switch to environmentally friendly cleaning and beauty products. These are biodegradable and won’t harm your plants. Don’t forget the shower – Put the plug in when you shower, and you can save the water for the garden. Safety-first – All grey water contains some bacteria. Use it within 24 hours but don’t use it for edible plants or for containers, only on decorative border plants. Think laterally – You don’t have to restrict grey-water to garden usage. Use it to clean the car too! Rachael Leverton

towner art gallery

28th Sept - 2nd February 2020

David Nash: 200 Seasons David Nash: 200 Seasons will be one of the largest and most ambitious exhibitions of David Nash’s work presented in England. The exhibition, from 28th September - 2nd February 2020, is a major survey of Nash’s career from the late 1960s to the present day, exploring his unique contribution to British sculpture and the international Land Art movement. 200 Seasons also marks one of the major moments in Towner’s programme of events and exhibitions celebrating 10 years in the gallery’s current building. The exhibition includes new work. The exhibition reflects the artist’s long relationship with Wales and East Sussex, in particular Capel Rhiw, Blaenau Ffestiniog, his home and studio for over half a century.

200 Seasons, which will be installed across Towner’s four major gallery spaces, will feature key sculptures, films and drawings from the late 1960s to the present day. The exhibited sculptures explore the different ways the artist has cut, carved and manipulated wood to produce work that crosses abstraction and figuration, always retaining his trademark reference to the forms of the original tree and the unique qualities of the chosen material. David Nash, who lives in Blaenau Ffestiniog and Lewes, has had many important solo exhibitions and international surveys of sculpture, and his work is represented in major museum collections around the world. Recent major presentations at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2010-11) and Kew Gardens (2012) have underlined his international importance as a sculptor and land artist. Previous exhibitions have included the Serpentine Gallery (London) and the Museum of Metropolitan Art (New York). Eighteen Thousand Tides (1996), in Towner’s collection and commissioned by the gallery almost 20 years ago, is also on permanent public display in Manor Gardens, Eastbourne. David Nash said, ‘I was born in the South East but have lived at Capel Rhiw, an old Methodist chapel in Blaenau Ffestiniog, since the 1960s. Many of my sculptures have been made in Sussex where much of the wood I use is sourced. I have watched Towner grow since the 1980s and it is a great pleasure to bring the Capel Rhiw Collection to this magnificent gallery.’ The exhibition has been developed in partnership with National Museum Cardiff, , taking place there from 3rd May to1st September, and will be accompanied by a major publication David Nash: 200 Seasons with contributions from Dr James Fox, Dr Jo Melvin and National Museum of Wales exhibition curator Nicholas Thornton. This publication will be available in Towner’s shop.

Safe and Sound

Don’t forget to protect your property while you’re away The summer holidays are just around the corner. We put a lot of effort into planning our perfect summer break, but we often don’t put quite as much effort into making sure that our home is safe while we’re away relaxing.

Most burglars are opportunists, who target empty homes. This means that the holiday season is bonanza time for them. However, a little preparation can save a lot of distress. 60 per cent of burglars gain entrance through rear or side windows and doors, so make securing these a priority. Fences and hedges are the first line of defence against uninvited guests, so should act as an effective barrier, rather than just being attractive borders. The Metropolitan Police recommend ‘hostile plants’; plants that are spiky, prickly or very dense. Don’t let them grow too high though, your home should be visible from the street and to your neighbours. The idea is not to provide a hiding place for intruders! Protect the entrance to your property too. If a gate isn’t practical, consider covering pathways with gravel. Thieves don’t like to announce their presence and the sound of footsteps on gravel is often enough to put them off entering. Motion-activated lighting, and well-lit paths and driveways are also a good deterrent. Outside security lighting is cheap to set up, and low energy light bulbs keep running costs down. Also, consider installing a burglar alarm – as well as protecting your property, having an alarm can also lower your insurance premiums. While you’re away on holiday, some extra precautions will help protect your possessions. Keep valuables out of sight. If they can be seen, then someone might be tempted to try to steal them. Don’t close curtains in the daytime though, as this announces to the world

14

that your house is empty. Invest in timer switches to turn lights and the radio on and off. Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries. Inform a couple of trusted neighbours that you will be away. Ask them to keep an eye on your property and offer to do the same for them while they are away. Little tasks like moving the post away from the door, and drawing your curtains in the evening will make it look as though someone is in. They could even park a car on your drive if you are taking yours away. Offer to do the same for them when they go on holiday. Join your Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, or if there isn’t a local scheme, set one up. Neighbourhood Watch has an excellent track record of deterring opportunistic thieves. A little vigilance and some common sense go a long way to protecting the things you love. Follow these simple steps and you will be able to relax on holiday, knowing your home is as safe as it can be. Sarah Davey

WHY Does This Programme Get Results?

PELVIC FLOOR FITNESS, CORE RESTORATION & WELLNESS FOR EVERY WOMAN

Is this the year that you take control of your Pelvic Floor, return to jumping/ running/sneezing with confidence? Is this the year that you finally address that nagging low back pain or get a better stronger core and tummy after your babies? If YES, then read on! Enjoy 6 wonderful weeks of movement, nutritional guidance and education regarding your Pelvic Floor, Core and women’s fitness/wellness at whatever life phase you’re in on this unique Holistic Core Restore® ‘Everywoman‘ programme. The programme is adaptable for virtually all women and is designed to ‘bring you back home’ to your amazing body with your Pelvic and Core Health at the centre of our focus.

This Programme is for you if you answer ‘YES’ to any of these questions… l Are

you a woman who wants to have a stronger and better functioning Pelvic Floor that does its job when you jump, sneeze, cough, laugh or run?

l Are

you a woman who wants to reconnect to your Core and have a better looking and stronger tummy?

l Are

you a woman who has ‘lower back pain’ issues and been told is due to a ‘weak Core’ and so you need an easy-to-do and time-efficient exercise programme that actually works?

l Have

you been performing your ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises fairly regularly but still don’t have the confidence in your Pelvic Floor you think you should?

l Do

you have a small Diastasis Recti (Tummy Gap) after Pregnancy (no matter how long ago) that you want to heal?

l Do

you want to return to jogging, running or more athletic activities but lack confidence because of small leaks?

In short, those ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises also known as Kegels simply aren’t the whole story. Your Pelvic Floor and Core muscles don’t exist in isolation and separate to the movements of your whole body and your breath. And so for your Pelvic Floor and your entire Core to work as it was designed to, we need to re-introduce it to the rest of your body and get it to do its job in time with your breath and movement.

What are the next steps once you have signed up? When you’re sure you want to join the programme you’ll be asked to complete our online HCR® PreScreening to ensure that this safe and ‘conservative’ exercise-based programme is right for you. You’ll then connect with your Coach, Denise to discuss the Pre-Screening and go through a few simple tests for your Core Function with a 1:1 screening/meeting. You’ll receive your HCR® Client Education Booklet and the key items of fitness kit required for the course and begin your journey to awesome Pelvic and Core Health and function. There are a maximum of 12 places on each course, so if you truly feel this programme is for you, please don’t delay in getting in touch for more information.

WHY SINGING IN A CHOIR IS GOOD FOR YOU Singing in a choir has never been so popular. There are over 25,000 choirs in the UK, helped by the influence of TV programmes such as Gareth Malone’s ‘The Choir’. According to the Voices Now Big Choral Census, over 2 million people sing in a choir every week. So what is it about singing in a choir that has people hooked? Singing in a choir has multiple benefits on a social, emotional and physical level. It’s a great way to meet new people and create meaningful connections with those with a shared passion. Singing in a choir is about being part of something that is bigger than ourselves, and gives a sense of togetherness and belonging. For many of our Eden Blue Choir members, it has become the highlight of their week!

Being part of a choir also gives you the ‘feel-good factor’. Singing releases happy endorphins that give you the same rush as eating chocolate and has been proven to reduce the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. It helps you to let go of your worries and allows you to sing your heart out and simply have fun. There has been a plethora of scientific research into the physical benefits of singing. According to Neuroscientists, musical memories use a broader range of neural pathways than other types of memories. Singing is an aerobic activity because it exercises the major muscle groups in the upper body and helps to circulate oxygenated blood around the body. Other physical benefits include increased immunity, lower blood pressure, stronger respiratory muscles and improved memory. Having been involved in choirs most of my adult life, I have first-hand experience of the joy of being part of a choir. It’s not about being the best singer or showing off individual talent, it’s about working together and enjoying the camaraderie of singing alongside others. So if you want to find out for yourself why singing in a choir is good for you, then the Eden Blue Rock, Pop & Gospel Choir is a great place to start. We have an evening choir on Tuesday at 8pm-9.30pm and a day choir on Friday at 11.15am-12.45pm at Eden Blue in Old Town. Newcomers are always welcome! Celine Gucher is a Centre Manager at Eden Blue. A Good Read

The Dalai Lama’s Cat by David Michie

Cats are odd creatures. Like dogs they accompany us through our lives but unlike dogs they tend to remain distant members of our households. They observe us, looking on in a slightly aloof, condescending manner, always ready to remind us that we don’t actually own them. Imagine what their view of our lives and our daily discussions would be. Imagine if they gave us their views on life. In this novel David Michie does exactly that. What if the Dalai Lama’s cat wandered freely in and out of the rooms in his home? What would he hear within the walls of the house as the Dalai Lama entertains famous people and spiritual seekers from across the world?

It is narrated by HHC (His Holiness’ Cat) and tells his life story from being a tiny kitten rescued from the streets of New Delhi, whisked away to His Holiness’ retreat in the Himalayas. He learns a lot from his new owner and sees life in a different way as a result. Described by some as a brief introduction to Buddhist philosophy, no matter what your faith is – or even if you have no faith – you will find words of wisdom in this meditative novel.

Wi-Fi Woes

How to boost the Wi-Fi signal in your home’s weak spots Recently a friend of mine decided to convert his garage to a games room. The big screen TV was to be the main feature. We all gathered for the big turn on to experience Netflix in full ultra HD. But all we got was a blocky, stuttering, unwatchable excuse for entertainment. It turned out that his wireless router (the bit that connects to his broadband) was plugged in at the opposite end of the house. The reception at this end of the house had always been poor, but the extra wall of the garage was just too much for the signal to push through. Result? No internet!

What to do?

The router had to stay by the phone socket, so moving that to the centre of the house wasn’t an option. Running a network cable (a permanent wire) from the router to the TV was a non-starter because it would involve a lot of work. This

meant he had to work out a different way to boost the Wi-Fi signal in the garage. I’d had a similar problem in my home and had discovered Wi-Fi extenders and repeaters (different companies call them by different names, but they all do the same thing).

There were two options:

A Wi-Fi repeater is basically a second router. You put it where you receive a good signal and it then creates a new Wi-Fi area that connects to your broadband. He could have sited that in the centre of the house and thus improved the signal in the garage. There would be a bit of setting up to get this working as you have to log on to the repeater with a computer, but it’s not hard if you know what you’re doing. There are YouTube tutorials which can help. The second option is the simplest, and ultimately the one he settled on – a powerline adaptor. This is a box that plugs into your router and then into a mains socket. It actually uses your house wiring to send your broadband signal around the house. All you need to do is buy a powerline Wi-Fi extender and plug it into the wall in the room where you need it most. It’s like you’re sitting right beside your Wi-Fi point. After a quick visit to the shops, he plugged in both devices. The set-up was quick and easy (literally pressing two buttons) and he was up and running with full broadband speed. His teens could now get YouTube in the garden as an extra bonus because he put an extra extender in a socket on the wall next to the patio. Mark O’Keefe
