Hello...

...and welcome to the February and March issue of the Eastbourne Town Crier magazine. February brings us Chinese New Year celebrations on Tuesday 5th – this year it’s the year of the pig. Love is in the air too with Valentine’s Day on the 14th, and ‘if music be the food of love’, well then there’s certainly plenty of music and love in Eastbourne! We have news from Eastbourne Community Choir on page 18 whilst ‘Without Borders’ is a fundraising concert on 23rd February in aid of Migrant Help charity. Eastbourne Choral Society perform Brahms’ Requiem on 30th March (see page 15) and Seaford Music Society’s afternoon concerts continue in 2019 (see page28). In March we celebrate St David’s Day on the 1st, Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day on the 5th (see page 5), followed by Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent on the 6th – what will you give up for 48 days? It’s also the Eastbourne Half Marathon on Sunday 3rd March (see page 12) and St Patrick’s Day on 17th March. Mothering Sunday is on the 31st, and don’t forget to put the clocks forward on 31st March too! All this and so much more can be found on the What’s On pages, 30 to 38 Enjoy! Fran Tegg, Editor

EASTBOURNE HALF MARATHON

Sport Systems’ Spring tour of Sussex begins in Eastbourne with their half marathon on Sunday 3rd March, starting at 10am. The Eastbourne Half is very much a community event and is most definitely aimed at runners of all abilities. We as organisers are just as excited at seeing the last person finish as we are the first, so why not set yourself the challenge. Get out your running shoes and get training, although you can walk it if you choose.

Once again we are very grateful to Reid + Dean, the Eastbourne Hospitality Association, all our various sponsors and supporters, and especially to our all stewards and marshals who help on the day. This is a thankless but very necessary task and gathering a large enough team of marshals is always one of the most difficult aspects to organising the event. So please, if you or anyone you know could spare some time on the morning, volunteer. The race starts in Princes Park and mostly follows the seafront promenades towards Beachy Head and back to Sovereign Harbour, where the course loops back to the finish which is located in Princes Park. Online entries will close on Friday 1st March at 12 noon. www.eastbournehalf.co.uk Notice: This issue of Eastbourne Town Crier has been distributed by an independent delivery company. Please note that Eastbourne Town Crier is not responsible for any other publicity material that is delivered at the same time as the magazine. Without Borders

An evening with the Modulus String Quartet and the New Network Singers

London-based Modulus String Quartet joins forces with the New Network Singers to perform an array of new works composed in response to one of the biggest challenges of our time, the migrant crisis. The performance features world premieres by Eastbournebased composers, Melody Woodham, Clive Whitburn and Tim Laverack, alongside music by Bafta awardwinning composer and Classic FM presenter, Jessica Curry. Eastbourne Town Crier is a completely independent small business. All rights are reserved over the content and design of Eastbourne Town Crier unless agreed otherwise. The opinions expressed in editorial matter are not necessarily those of the publisher. Every care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of entries. Eastbourne Town Crier does not endorse companies, products, services or religious or political organisations that appear in this magazine.

The concept behind ‘Without Borders’ is to focus on the human cost of the migrant crisis whilst doing something practical to help. All profits from the concert will be directed to our nominated charity Migrant Help, which offers support for vulnerable migrants and victims of human trafficking and modern slavery. It is hoped that by keeping the crisis at the forefront of public consciousness it will remain high on the political agenda. As author Dina Nayeri so eloquently puts it, ‘it is the obligation of every person in a safer room to open the door when someone in danger knocks’. The concert, organised by Composers Network, is at the Birley Centre, Eastbourne, on Saturday 23rd February at 7.30pm. Tickets: £12, under 18s: £8, in advance from www.melodywoodham.com/ withoutborders, and on the door, subject to availability. Photo: Modulus String Quartet.

My Gardening Valentine

In the run-up to Valentine’s Day someone always asks me what they should buy for the gardener in their life. It’s a tricky question to answer. People think we must like cut flowers, but many gardeners aren’t that keen – we tend to prefer our plants living and growing. Unless you know a bit about gardening, and the tastes of your own particular gardener, you’re probably bestoff avoiding plants too. There are so many variables… Will it suit the soil? Is it too invasive? Will it poison the gardener’s dog – or children? It’s a thorny issue (pardon the pun), so here is my go-to gift list guaranteed to make you the Valentine hero(-ine) of your gardening amour.

ic o op f

th on

the m

SUNFLOWER

For a similar price to a bunch of red roses, you can buy the gardener in your life some Felco secateurs, which will last forever. Most gardeners would also be delighted to receive a garden trug – especially if it’s filled with goodies such as seeds, water retaining granules and plant food. You could add some stainless steel hand tools too. An insulated mug or a good flask will warm your Valentine’s heart, because drinks don’t stay hot for long outside, even on a warm day. Finally, don’t forget gardening vouchers. Gardeners often spot the perfect plant or gardening accessory when strapped for cash, so vouchers are a perfect gift to save for a rainy day…and gardeners love rainy days, Valentine’s or not. Happy Gardening! Rachael Leverton

to d o

The common sunflower or Helianthus annuus came from the Americas and the seeds were brought to Europe in the 16th century. Oil from the seeds was soon widely used in cooking. The sunflower probably gets its name from the shape of the flower; the heads also tend to turn towards the sun as it moves across the sky. Sunflowers grow tall – the tallest recorded reached 30 feet. The tiny disk flowers in the centre of the flower head are arranged in spirals set in 2 different directions, the most efficient way of packing in as many seeds as is mathematically possible. Sow sunflower seeds now in pots indoors, or in spring if sowing outside. Take a look inside the flower heads when they bloom in summer and see how nature has worked its magic so efficiently. Sunflowers bring a smile to anyone’s face – bees, hoverflies and birds appreciate them too.

A proper long-necked watering can, with a brass rose, will also earn you brownie points. Bigger isn’t necessarily better though, unless your Valentine boasts big biceps! I find 3-4 litres is about the right size.

what

Don’t buy a naff ‘head gardener’ sweatshirt. However, if you present your gardener with a tough tunic or gardening apron, which is thorn-proof and has lots of deep pockets to house secateurs and trowels, they will love you forever.

Then there are wellies. Gardening folk drool over wellies the way supermodels drool over Jimmy Choos. We all prefer something with a thick sole, but there’s so much choice, from bright and colourful to traditional styles. For the ultimate in warmth and breathability, try a proper Gore-Tex pair…sheer luxury.

JOBS TO DO IN FEB

3 Plant raspberry canes 30-60cm apart

in slightly acidic soil, prune to 25cm once planted, and provide support. 3Plant a root of mint in a pot, keep in the greenhouse or a warm place, and leaves will be ready to pick earlier than they would be in the garden. 3Nip out the top two leaves of sweet pea plants, keep covered till weather warms up, then plant in moist rich soil in sun.

SINGING IS GOOD FOR YOU!

In recent years the benefits to health of singing have, I am delighted to say, been brought more centrally into many people’s consciousness. Recent scientific studies have shown that singing releases endorphins and natural opiates, and can boost both immunity and lung capacity, whilst reducing blood pressure. Evidence of the health and social benefits of belonging to a singing group has been brought vividly into our living rooms by Gareth Malone’s Military Wives Choir programmes and subsequent series. The growth of Community Choirs and Rock Choirs all over the UK in the last 15 years has also emboldened many to embrace a new method of music making. Music Therapy is well established as a possible treatment for medical symptons, particularly for cancer pain patients and post-operative patients. It has also been used for decades as an effective tool to help those diagnosed with ADHD, perhaps because the pitch and rhythm of the music influences the brain’s limbic system. Many of us will find it fairly easy to agree that listening to a piece of music we enjoy can often make us feel better. Perhaps it is also easy to acknowledge that deepening our breathing is probably a healthy, lifeenhancing thing to do, as it increases our oxygen intake and expands our lungs. Having run choirs for many years, in September 2018 I set up the Eastbourne Community Choir to give local residents with some, little or no experience of singing the chance to have a go at singing together in a group.

We sing songs from a wide variety of styles, from Les Misérables, through to the Beatles to George Gershwin. Many of our songs are well known to most, and an important aspect of the Eastbourne Community Choir is that we do not put on performances and so are not obliged to perfect our singing. Whilst we may repeat certain sections of music, and I may suggest certain musical or technical changes, we tend to get through at least 12 songs each Thursday, either side of a break for tea and biscuits! Our aim is to have fun through singing in a mutually supportive community environment. Within this environment a choir member is not only immersed in live music but is contributing to the music through a healthy use of his/her body’s own sound. Each choir member is encouraged to ‘edit’ my suggestions as necessary, according to his/her own abilities and requirements. However, it is my experience that, quite quickly, most people achieve far more than they ever thought they could. I hope and believe that it is true to say that most people, on most Thursdays, leave the singing room feeling better, recharged and hopefully having made some new friends as well. We are always delighted to welcome new members, so why not join us and give it a try? We meet most Thursdays of the year from 7.30pm to 9.15pm in the hall of All Saints Church, Grange Road, Eastbourne. The cost for the evening is £5, which includes tea, biscuits and all lyric sheets. We operate on a drop-in basis, so there is no need to commit for a long period of time (although we hope you will enjoy it and want to come back!). Pevensey Castle – PRE-REVEAL Much is happening at English Heritage’s site Pevensey Castle in 2019. This ancient scheduled listed monument spans 1,700 years, with defences from Roman fortifications to medieval stone-built castle, to WWII observation and command post. Today, the stonework of the site stonework is undergoing conservation by skilled stonemasons using traditional methods and materials. Re-interpretation of the site’s long history and a new exhibition will be installed for late summer 2019 opening. On Wednesday 6th February, 1pm to 3pm, Pre-Reveal, an exciting new visitor event, will showcase the plans for English Heritage’s new exhibition at Pevensey Castle. Visitors will have a rare opportunity to see first-hand the Pevensey Castle archaeological collection, that is being specially shown at the site for the Pre-Reveal event.

‘SPECIALS’ at Church Lane Tea RooM What a joy to be invited to sample the ‘specials’ menu at Church Lane Tea Room in Seaford. Having reviewed here before, I had a feeling I wouldn’t be disappointed. On a hot summer’s day its easy to lose your appetite, so when Master Chef Steve informed me there would be four dishes, my stomach took a running jump! However he reassured me that the meals would be very light and perfect for a warm day and with the doors wide open and a pleasant breeze wafting through, he was right. First up on the menu was the beautifully presented Smoked Mackerel Salad – lots of fresh salad leaves, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, beetroot, mixed seeds, salad dressing and plenty of large pieces of smoked mackerel – a plateful of healthy deliciousness! This was followed by the Horseradish Scone with Smoked Salmon and Crème Fraiche, which looked amazing. Two warm, fluffy scone halves topped with lashings of crème fraiche and richly flavoured smoked salmon. Such a perfect combination, I really loved this dish! Next on the ‘specials’ was the Smoked Haddock and Ginger Fishcake, served again with Steve’s fresh dressed salad. If strong flavoured fish is not to your liking, then this is the one for you, a soft fishcake with a subtle flavour and hint of ginger, just enough to tickle your tastebuds. And the alternative to fish today was the Crab and Asparagus Tart – again light and delicate, and baked perfectly, also served with a large salad. It’s a lucky dip really as to what will be on the specials menu, as Steve’s delicious repertoire is quite varied, including half-baked Aubergine with tomatoes, olives, goats cheese and salad, quite scrumptious; or Savoury Scones with fig, walnuts and warm goats cheese; Harrissa Chicken Salad or Baked Camembert to share. Whatever ‘special’ Steve is cooking up for you, I ‘m sure you too won’t be disappointed! Fran Tegg

WHY Does This Programme Get Results?

PELVIC FLOOR FITNESS, CORE RESTORATION & WELLNESS FOR EVERY WOMAN

Is this the year that you take control of your Pelvic Floor, return to jumping/ running/sneezing with confidence? Is this the year that you finally address that nagging low back pain or get a better stronger core and tummy after your babies? If YES, then read on! Enjoy 6 wonderful weeks of movement, nutritional guidance and education regarding your Pelvic Floor, Core and women’s fitness/wellness at whatever life phase you’re in on this unique Holistic Core Restore® ‘Everywoman‘ programme. The programme is adaptable for virtually all women and is designed to ‘bring you back home’ to your amazing body with your Pelvic and Core Health at the centre of our focus.

This Programme is for you if you answer ‘YES’ to any of these questions… l Are

you a woman who wants to have a stronger and better functioning Pelvic Floor that does its job when you jump, sneeze, cough, laugh or run?

l Are

you a woman who wants to reconnect to your Core and have a better looking and stronger tummy?

l Are

you a woman who has ‘lower back pain’ issues and been told is due to a ‘weak Core’ and so you need an easy-to-do and time-efficient exercise programme that actually works?

l Have

you been performing your ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises fairly regularly but still don’t have the confidence in your Pelvic Floor you think you should?

l Do

In short, those ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises also known as Kegels simply aren’t the whole story. Your Pelvic Floor and Core muscles don’t exist in isolation and separate to the movements of your whole body and your breath. And so for your Pelvic Floor and your entire Core to work as it was designed to, we need to re-introduce it to the rest of your body and get it to do its job in time with your breath and movement.

What are the next steps once you have signed up? When you’re sure you want to join the programme you’ll be asked to complete our online HCR® PreScreening to ensure that this safe and ‘conservative’ exercise-based programme is right for you. You’ll then connect with your Coach, Denise to discuss the Pre-Screening and go through a few simple tests for your Core Function with a 1:1 screening/meeting. You’ll receive your HCR® Client Education Booklet and the key items of fitness kit required for the course and begin your journey to awesome Pelvic and Core Health and function. There are a maximum of 12 places on each course, so if you truly feel this programme is for you, please don’t delay in getting in touch for more information.

SEAFORD MUSIC SOCIETY

Seaford Music Society’s Sunday afternoon concert programme continues in 2019 with concerts at St Leonard’s Church in Seaford on Sundays 3rd February and 24th March at 3pm. The February concert features the world famous and much loved London Mozart Players (LMP), celebrating their 70th birthday in 2019, making them the longest established chamber orchestra in the country. Harry Blech, one of Britain’s best loved musicians, first as a violinist and later as a conductor, founded the London Mozart Players in 1949. The first concert was a sell out, the music played was of course well known Mozart compositions. Over the last 70 years the LMP, as well as its chamber ensemble, has delighted audiences the world over with its concerts and numerous recordings from a wide range of composers. The London Mozart Players Chamber Ensemble have put together a rich and varied programme for the

concert on 3rd February. Beethoven’s early Horn Sonata, arranged as a quintet, opens the programme, after which there is a rarely heard work by French composer Charles-François Gounod. As well as the ever popular Clarinet Quintet by Mozart, another of his quintets follows the first, this he left tantalisingly unfinished now though completed by the late Duncan Druce. The programme ends with Lennox Berkeley’s jaunty sextet, written in 1954 for horn, clarinet and string quartet. The Society’s March concert will feature Trio Goya playing classical works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven on instruments of the period. The Trio is made up of Kati Debretzeni, who, as a violinist, is the leader of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and makes her first ever Seaford appearance. Regular performer with the society Sebastian Comberti plays cello and Maggie Cole on the fortepiano, all bring many years of chamber music experience. Their recent CDs of Haydn’s London Trios and Beethoven’s Opus 1 Trio have been greeted with critical acclaim and won numerous plaudits: ‘I am inclined to assert that they are possibly the best Haydn piano trio performances on record.’ Musical Pointers. ‘Fresh, poised and alert to all dynamic possibilities, these are period instruments playing at their best.’ The Observer. These are concerts not to be missed in the next two months – all are welcome to enjoy afternoons of wonderful music. Admission for non-members of the Society is £15, students in full time education £5, accompanied children admitted free. Tickets in advance can be purchased from Newberry Tully Estate Agents, Church Street, Seaford, or via the society’s treasurer Paul Moore. All details and information about the society are on the website: www.seafordmusicsociety.com
