Hello...
...and welcome to the June and July issue of the Eastbourne Town Crier. Summer is finally here and Eastbourne has lots to offer over the next few months, with outdoor events, music, theatre, sport, art exhibitions and so much more! It’s the Beach Life Festival in July, with plenty to enjoy for all the family, see page 8 and it’s Eastbourne Pride on Saturday 20th July (more details on the What’s On pages, 33 to 42). Fancy having a go at learning some circus tricks and impressing your friends? Turn to page 12 for more details. Safety on the road is a concern for all cyclists – turn to page 4 and join the mass cycle ride in support of safer roads in Eastbourne. And talking of cycling, it’s the Tour of Sussex Cycle race on 5th July, the BHF South Downs Way Off-road bike ride on 13th July and Eastbourne Cycling Festival from 27th to 28th July! Music-wise, we have concerts from Concentus with Lewes, Glynde & Beddingham Brass on page 15 and Seaford Music Society on page 32, and if you fancy a good walk, why not support the Macmillan South Coast Mighty Hike on 8th June? Don’t forget it’s Father’s Day on 16th June and make the most of the longest day of the year on 21st June. Have a great time and enjoy your June and July! Fran Tegg, Editor

HAVE YOU HEARD THE NEWS? Can you imagine not being able to pick up the newspaper or a magazine and dip into it, to find out what is happening in Eastbourne and the surrounding area or to hear about interesting people and places in Sussex or what is on at the local theatres? Many people feel very isolated and cut off when their sight begins to fail or who have been visually-impaired for many years. Eastbourne Talking Newspaper provides a free service to bring recorded news and items of interest to the visually-impaired. Each week a recording of a selection of articles from the Eastbourne Herald is sent out to about 100 listeners and similarly a recording of a selection of articles from the national weekend papers is also sent out. Once a month listeners receive a recordings of articles from magazines with a local perspective or which provide an insight into the wider world. Sometimes there will be an interview with a local person with a story to tell or who has an interesting job such as the coxswain of the lifeboat, the Mayor or one of the stars of the local pantomime. The registered charity, which is based in the Old Town, has been providing this service to local visually-impaired people since 1978. Originally the recordings were

made onto cassette tapes, but in more recent years the recordings are made digitally and sent out on memory sticks. If required listeners can be provided with a ‘ boombox’ (a portable player). There are about 50 Volunteers who regularly come into the studio to help make the recordings. There are six teams who record the local paper, six teams who record the weekend papers and one team which records the monthly magazine. Each team consists of a Recorder, who sits at the computer and presses all the (hopefully correct) buttons and three Readers, who take it in turns to read. The Editor (usually that week’s Recorder) will have selected topical articles. Often one has to read at sight (i.e. there is no time to glance through articles before reading them). Much amusement can be caused when a difficult name or badly constructed sentence trips up the Reader. A quick click back on the computer to a suitable point of the sentence and we’re off again. On local recordings useful information is provided such as lighting up times, roadworks or pavements being repaired, which may alter or delay buses or cause obstructions to visuallyimpaired people. Mention is also made of what’s on at the theatres, particularly where Audio Description is provided. Each recording lasts about an hour and the memory sticks are copied and sent out in wallets by the part-time Administrator – the charity’s only employee. Royal Mail has a scheme under which ‘Articles for the Blind’ are sent first-class and free of charge. The return of the wallets is also free of charge. It is always good to hear feedback from the listeners, both compliments and constructive criticism, and one comment was particularly memorable. The listener said that she often found herself at family gatherings but had no idea what the family was talking about. ‘Now I tell them things they didn’t know,’ she said.

WHY Does This Programme Get Results?
PELVIC FLOOR FITNESS, CORE RESTORATION & WELLNESS FOR EVERY WOMAN
Is this the year that you take control of your Pelvic Floor, return to jumping/ running/sneezing with confidence? Is this the year that you finally address that nagging low back pain or get a better stronger core and tummy after your babies? If YES, then read on! Enjoy 6 wonderful weeks of movement, nutritional guidance and education regarding your Pelvic Floor, Core and women’s fitness/wellness at whatever life phase you’re in on this unique Holistic Core Restore® ‘Everywoman‘ programme. The programme is adaptable for virtually all women and is designed to ‘bring you back home’ to your amazing body with your Pelvic and Core Health at the centre of our focus.
This Programme is for you if you answer ‘YES’ to any of these questions… l Are
you a woman who wants to have a stronger and better functioning Pelvic Floor that does its job when you jump, sneeze, cough, laugh or run?
l Are
you a woman who wants to reconnect to your Core and have a better looking and stronger tummy?
l Are
you a woman who has ‘lower back pain’ issues and been told is due to a ‘weak Core’ and so you need an easy-to-do and time-efficient exercise programme that actually works?
l Have
you been performing your ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises fairly regularly but still don’t have the confidence in your Pelvic Floor you think you should?
l Do
you have a small Diastasis Recti (Tummy Gap) after Pregnancy (no matter how long ago) that you want to heal?
l Do
you want to return to jogging, running or more athletic activities but lack confidence because of small leaks?
In short, those ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises also known as Kegels simply aren’t the whole story. Your Pelvic Floor and Core muscles don’t exist in isolation and separate to the movements of your whole body and your breath. And so for your Pelvic Floor and your entire Core to work as it was designed to, we need to re-introduce it to the rest of your body and get it to do its job in time with your breath and movement.
What are the next steps once you have signed up? When you’re sure you want to join the programme you’ll be asked to complete our online HCR® PreScreening to ensure that this safe and ‘conservative’ exercise-based programme is right for you. You’ll then connect with your Coach, Denise to discuss the Pre-Screening and go through a few simple tests for your Core Function with a 1:1 screening/meeting. You’ll receive your HCR® Client Education Booklet and the key items of fitness kit required for the course and begin your journey to awesome Pelvic and Core Health and function. There are a maximum of 12 places on each course, so if you truly feel this programme is for you, please don’t delay in getting in touch for more information.

The friendly staff are always willing to demonstrate and let you try things out, they offer regular free ‘learn to juggle’ sessions and encourage passers-by to ‘pop in and play’. Claiming to be the ‘funnest shop in town,’ Sweet Circus also stocks a range of retro and old-fashioned sweets, the ones in the big jars that have to be weighed out – the shop smells just delicious! The shop is usually open Thurs – Saturday afternoons, but you should always check their social media for weekly timetables as most of staff time is given over to encouraging the masses to incorporate circus into their lives. Sweet Circus runs term-time classes for children and regular family workshops. Currently they are trialling a social circus session for over 50s. They also run a charity in partnership with Active Cherry Fitness called Circus by the Sea, which endeavours to provide as many free opportunities to engage with circus skills as possible through local events and festivals. ‘Most of our classes are aimed at children but there are also opportunities for adults. The benefits of learning circus skills at any age are well documented and include the obvious improvements in fitness and agility, but circus is also known to improve your mental health and well being. In addition, it develops right brain/left brain communication which can change perspectives, enable innovation and future-proof your brain as you age. ‘It’s all about play,’ Director Miz says, ‘If we continued to play, as we grew up, and grew old we’d probably be happier, healthier and better equipped to be the best parents, children, friends, employees and employers.’

concentus ‘sings’ and lewes, glynde & beddingham brass ‘play’ summer!
Concentus has a trick or two up its sleeve for the Summer Concert this year – the choir will be joined by the highly acclaimed Lewes, Glynde & Beddingham Brass to offer you an exciting experience where Concentus sings, LGBB plays and quite often they do both at the same time!
Concentus has already stretched its wings this year, singing by invitation both at a reception for special guests at the opening of the refurbished Congress Theatre and with Aled Jones at a concert in Worthing. Neither event deflected from preparations for the June concerts with a full-day rehearsal delivering the final, expected, polish to the interesting programme. LGBB, a talented contest band, is equally ready with its own programme. The band is under the leadership of experienced bandmaster Ian Stewart who has skilfully converted the choir’s vocal scores into unique band arrangements, enabling the band to accompany the choir in joint pieces. It will be a sparkling concert! Concentus Musical Director Adrian White has chosen music which highlights great musical shows as well as ‘stand-alone’ songs, displaying the choir’s versatility over many genres and moods of music. His skills as Choir Master and his ability to communicate these to his singers shine out in their use of volume, pace and expression to draw out the feeling and the story of every piece. As he often says, ‘Anybody can sing the notes but Concentus goes deeper to express all that those notes can convey.’ These abilities are apparent throughout the concert but particularly in the individual songs such as Nella Fantasia (Ennio Morricone) and Goin’ Home (based on the Largo from Dvorak’s ‘New World Symphony). You will hear songs from Phantom of the Opera (Andrew Lloyd Webber/Charles Hart 1986) and Miss Saigon (C M Schonberg/A Boublil/R Maltby). The Music of MGM takes you down memory lane with songs from six shows, while Rogers and Hammerstein on Broadway (which choir and band perform together) gives a taste of their famous musicals culminating with the expressive You’ll Never Walk Alone. Will you be able to spot all of the shows featured? The joint
performance of The Greatest Show will knock your socks off with its attack and vitality, and Sussex by the Sea gives you a chance to join in the singing. All this and an exciting band programme too! You will not want to miss it, so note the date and get your tickets in good time for what will doubtless be a very popular concert indeed!

A view from the Potting Shed Sitting Sustainably One of the great pleasures in life has to be sitting outside on a summer evening, glass of wine in hand, gazing in reverie at your precious plot. But what are you sitting on? Is your furniture environmentally friendly? What about that lovely decking, or your garden shed?
A good proportion of this wood is used to make garden buildings, furniture, fencing and decking. I was thrilled, therefore, to read about the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and their certification programme for sustainable produced and sourced wood.
The world’s forests are in decline. Some tropical hardwoods are already on the verge of extinction, and temperate forests in the northern hemisphere are also suffering because of unregulated tree-felling. As a gardener and lover of our environment I feel more comfortable knowing that I’m not contributing to
Q. Is it possible to be environmentally friendly when buying PVC furniture? A. Yes it is. Many companies are now producing furniture made from recycled PVCs. You’re no longer limited to the standard flimsy offerings either. It’s now possible to find sturdy benches and picnic tables. Of course, the advantage of PVC is that it’s completely weatherproof; maintenance-free, and won’t rot, corrode or splinter! Rachael Leverton to d

The FSC was founded in 1993, in response to public concern about deforestation. The council devised a wood-labelling scheme which allows a product to be traced right back down the supply chain from the consumer to its source. Unfortunately not all garden suppliers stock products which are FSC approved. So we need to demand that they do.

what
As gardeners we have a responsibility which extends far beyond our boundary. Trees are vital to the planet. They convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and act as environmental filters, offsetting the effects of pollution. They also provide a habitat for birds and animals. Like many gardeners I take a keen interest in environmental matters so it came as a shock when I read recently that every year our tiny island imports more unsustainably produced wood than anywhere else in the world!
JOBS TO DO IN june & July
3With the lack of rain, remember not to cut the lawn
too short, no need to water it as when rain does come it will recover quickly. 3Remove all the yellowed leaves of daffodils and other spring bulbs then plant some summer bedding in the space. 3Check gooseberry bushes for sawfly, their eggs are laid on the underside of the leaves, emerging as caterpillars. Remove immediately otherwise the bush will be defoliated. 3Fill spare terracotta pots every two weeks or so with multi-purpose compost and sow salad leaves - they will grow quickly for a regular supply.

Community Wise
What’s the point?
There’s no doubt that people are creative. People are capable of using creative skills to solve problems that relate to our basic needs to keep alive – food and shelter – and once these needs are met, people make art, seemingly with no relation to how it might help keep us alive. At Community Wise we host a wide variety of art groups. Every single day of the week something creative is happening at Community Wise. There are cooking and meals going on here, we host two choirs, several art groups, dance groups and classes, quilting and textile crafts. The two church congregations that meet on Sundays at Community Wise demonstrate creative worship of God; He’s the one who models and makes us creative, just take a look at the variety of life we experience in nature! An artist may enjoy a sense of purpose and relaxation; in the process of playing music, singing, dancing, writing,

drawing and painting, artists experience ‘flow’. In this state, awareness of surroundings diminishes. Focus narrows to the creative activity, and the product produced. In this way the act of making something now is mindful, as it demands staying in the present, and is satisfying itself. Art also has an end product which can be shared. We eat a meal, we listen to others sing, we watch a dance, we read a book, we look at a painting, we hold a quilt. The product of art serves to support and encourage connection. It serves to provide cultural understanding and allows a relationship with ‘the audience’. In this way, art connects all of us. Art can be subversive. It doesn’t have to explain everything. Art provides opportunity for further creative activity. The audience must ‘make’ something of what they read, or watch, or look at. Listening to a piece of music, or reading a book, for example, allows another person to experience ‘flow’. Sometimes the meaning of art will be clear, but often art simply has the ability to get under, or beyond, our cerebral radar and evokes a feeling. That’s probably the point of art. It makes us feel something. Art can challenge, art can enrich. It allows us to see new things, maybe to think new things, maybe feel something fresh. We are made to be creative. It’s a wonderful part of being human. Community Wise, Ocklynge Road, Old Town, Eastbourne BN21 1PY. A Good Read
Glass Geishas by Susanna Quinn
Susanna Quinn’s novel, Glass Geishas, is a thriller set in modern-day Tokyo – specifically in the notorious Roppongi district, where everything has a price. As the novel opens, Steph, the principal character, is just arriving in Japan with the specific aim of making as much money as possible as quickly as possible. However, her friend Annabel seems to have vanished – and her other friend Julia does not seem to recognise her, let alone welcome her. Something is clearly wrong. Having found Annabel’s abandoned diary, Steph sets out to find out what has happened to her friend and quickly becomes involved in the hostess trade. As the novel moves on, Steph’s own quest is intercut with two other storylines. The first, a set of emails from Chastity, an established hostess, shows the harsh reality of the life that Steph is moving into. The second, the memoirs
of Mamasan, owner of one of Roppongi’s oldest clubs, explores how the trade has developed and changed over time. By the end of the novel, these strands are drawn together into a twisting conclusion which will keep you gripped. Quinn has clearly drawn on some of the recent writing about Japan and the significance of the geisha. However, her portrait is far from romanticised, and whilst her hostesses are certainly as elegant and glamorous as the traditional geisha and maiko, Steph’s world revolves around alcohol, sex and money – a fragile combination which puts her in significant danger. If the novel has a fault, it is in the slow reveal of Annabel’s diary – it is hard to believe that Steph, curious as she is, would not read the whole book at once. However, this is a minor point, and by stringing this out, Quinn is able to keep us guessing at what has happened to Steph’s friend – and what will happen to Steph herself – making us turn the pages rapidly as the end approaches.

Phoebe Unwin: Iris This exhibition, which includes new works, takes its name from the artist’s late maternal grandmother and reflects on the ideas surrounding how the iris works, moving from the intimate and unspoken to the communal, stretching to different times, reflective of the nature of painting itself. Phoebe Unwin’s paintings are rooted in personal experience, with each becoming a distinct exploration in the physical and emotive aspects of looking. For instance, the relationship one’s body has with the perception of a subject: a speedy profile, of swimming, an egg being boiled or the mind’s-eye perspective of a room from above. A wide spectrum of colour, in oil and acrylic paint is used across the works that will be exhibited: varying translucencies and palette ranges trigger the different kinds of associations familiar subjects might provoke. The paintings take the experience of the self to be something ever changeable, in scale and psychological presence.
Dineo Seshee Bopape: Sedibeng, it comes with the rain Born and based in South Africa, Dineo Seshee Bopape addresses politics, race, spirituality, gender and sexuality in her ambitious large-scale installations which are created using sound, found objects and moving image. ‘Sedibeng, it comes with the rain’ is an immersive installation set in an environment of reflecting and refracting light, on a floor strewn with feathers, metal

abstractions, letter charms, bags of healing herbs, images of ripe fruits and flowers native to Africa. The work explores notions of fertility, land, resistance, Afrodiasporic spiritual aesthetics and practices. Bopape has exhibited work across the globe, including at the 10th Berlin Biennale and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. This will be the artist’s first major solo presentation in England. ‘Sedibeng, it comes with the rain’ was acquired by the Contemporary Art Society for Towner’s collection at Frieze London in 2017, joining many other works in Towner’s collection anchored in a strong sense of place.

make sussex glitter – help clean up the litter New A27 clean up campaign group takes action A group of Sussex residents has come together to highlight the issue of roadside litter and debris discarded along the otherwise picturesque A27. The group, calling themselves The A27 Clean Up Campaign, is committed to working with partners to decrease and remove the volume of rubbish currently blighting this national trunk road. Commenting on the group’s formation, founding member, Milly Manley said: ‘The state of the A27 roadside is appalling and an eyesore to everyone who travels along it. The amount of plastic and general rubbish is a threat to the local wildlife, a threat to the environment, and its ungainly appearance could also play a part in jeopardising tourism. Who wants to come and visit a rubbish tip? ‘We put the group together to help rectify the situation and are launching a region-wide campaign to tackle, and deal with, the extent of litter and debris carelessly discarded along this important and busy route. However, with so many bodies and parties involved, it is a delicate path to navigate.

‘The A27, a main Highways England trunk road, runs from Eastbourne in the east to Wiltshire in the west, through the South Downs National Park. It incorporates a number of different local authority areas, each with a statutory duty to keep their sections of the busy route clear of litter and rubbish. So, to get the campaign underway, the Clean Up group is going to try to work closely with local authorities, county councils, highways contractors and central Government to achieve lasting results.’ The group already has links with the Tidy Up Team at Brighton & Hove City Council, Litter Free Lewes, the Kingston Action Group, Brighter Uckfield and Brighter Crowborough, who are all working towards the same goal and it is hoped that this united objective and activity will create a broader appeal for action, and raise awareness to a wider audience. Another member of the Clean Up group, Neil Kerridge, explained: ‘Residents are sickened by the amount of litter and plastic material that is becoming embedded in our roadside verges over long stretches of the A27. Whilst we are not recommending others take to litter picking on busy stretches of road, we strongly believe something has to be done urgently to stop the litter becoming a source of wider environmental pollution. ‘We fully support Clean Highways, a national organisation which has been campaigning to get Highways England to take over the full responsibility for the A27 end to end including litter removal.’ Milly concluded: ‘The Clean Up group is open to anyone who wants to help make a difference and do something about the mess, untidiness and potentially hazardous situation. We also hope that local businesses, sports facilities, educational establishments, the tourism industry and other interested parties will join us in the call for action.’ If you’d like to find out more about The A27 Clean Up Campaign or even display one of the group’s ‘Make Sussex Glitter – Clean Up the Litter’ car stickers, please contact the group via its Facebook page: www.facebook.com/A27-Clean-Up-Campaign or email: a27cleanup@gmail.com.

Seaford Music Society
gala concert with concert pianist melvin tan
If you are a Classical Music fan then this is an event not to be missed. Even if you do not consider yourself interested in classical music it is still a concert worth coming to! The internationally renowned pianist Melvyn Tan will be performing in Seaford at a Gala Concert to be held at 7.30pm in St Leonard’s Church on Saturday 29th June. Melvyn is a Singapore-born British classical pianist performing a wide-ranging repertoire of music written by many different composers. At an early age he came to England to study, firstly at the Yehudi Menuhin School, later enrolling at the Royal College of Music. He now enjoys a busy concert career performing worldwide with a considerable recording portfolio. In 2017 he became Patron of Seaford Music Society. Joined by Ruth Rogers (violin) and Sebastian Comberti (cello) who are both well-known members of the London Mozart Players, the programme opens with Beethoven’s Trio Op.11, followed by works by Schubert, two Impromptus and the heavenly Notturno for piano trio. The second half of the concert is an all-French affair, culminating in Debussy’s symphonic suite ‘Le Mer’ written in 1905 and arranged for Piano Trio by Sally Beamish. Debussy corrected the proofs of this piece whilst on a visit to Eastbourne staying at The Grand Hotel in August of that year. A passionate pianist himself, Debussy needed to play during his stay and he is believed to have rented a Bluthner baby grand piano from the Eastbourne company S. Hermitage and Sons. He liked the piano so much that he shipped it back to Paris – it now resides in the local museum at Brive-la-Gaillarde in South West France. Prior to this we will hear piano works from Debussy’s Images and the 2nd Violin Sonata of Ravel with its Jazz-inspired Blues movement.
32
This promises to be the perfect programme for a midsummer evening. Tickets are £32.50/£17.50 members (includes a glass of wine or fruit juice). Students £15, Children free. Early booking is advised. Following the concert, drinks can be bought with complimentary nibbles and an opportunity to meet the musicians. For ticket and membership enquiries contact the treasurerer, Paul Moore, 79 Clementine Avenue, Seaford BN25 2UU. Tel: 01323 491601. Email: treasurer@seafordmusicsociety.com.

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems
What do small children like best in a picture book? If anyone knows, it is Mo Willems, who spent several years as a scriptwriter for ‘Sesame Street’. And here, what he has hit on is that little word beloved of toddlers – ‘NO!’ The premise of the book is simple – and summed up neatly in the title. The reader needs to stop the pigeon driving the bus while the bus driver is away for a few minutes. However, this is a very determined pigeon. On every page he comes up with a good reason why he could, should and must drive that bus. Reading this book aloud is a delight. As you read the pigeon’s increasingly desperate attempts to get behind the wheel, your audience can say – or shout – ‘No!’ at each page, usually accompanied by a great deal of giggling. And parents will recognise the toddler’s range of tactics – from pleading, to sulking, to promises to ‘be your best friend’ – all of which are summarily rejected. With simple drawings and a thoroughly endearing main character, this is ideal to read to pre-school children of any age. The pigeon makes several reappearances in Willems’ other books – Don’t Let The Pigeon Stay Up Late is probably the next one you will want to seek out, and it is just as much fun. Really.
