Hello... ...and welcome to the October and November issue of the Eastbourne Town Crier magazine, your community magazine business directory and What’s On guide. I hope you all had an enjoyable summer – the weather this year has been fantastic! Sadly, the days are getting shorter and the nights are drawing in. It’s time to start preparing for autumn and everything that comes with it, including Halloween and Bonfire Night! Eastbourne Bonfire Society’s procession and fireworks will be going off on Saturday 6th October and of course this year, Bonfire Night falls on Monday 5th November. It’s Halloween on 31st October, and if you want to know how to make a great pumpkin lantern, turn to page 26. It’s the Beachy Head Marathon and 10K run on 27th October (sse page 29) and the Eastbourne Beer Festival is running from 26th September to 26th November – more details and much more on the What’s On pages from 36 to 45. If you are involved with an event and would like it listed in the What’s On pages in the Dec/Jan issue, please email the details to me by Friday 9th November to: fran@theoldtowncrier.co.uk. Oh, and don’t forget the clocks go back on Sunday 28th October! Enjoy your issue...

The Everyday and Extraordinary An Arts Council Collection National Partners Exhibition The notion of the found object as artistic material, content and subject-matter provides the inspiration for The Everyday and Extraordinary, an exhibition presenting a Wunderkammer of modern and contemporary artworks drawn from the Arts Council Collection. The show brings together a fusion of materials, processes and innovative ideas, celebrating the physicality of objects in this predominantly digital age. Found objects or ‘objets trouvés’ provide infinite inspiration for artists. When, in 1913, Marcel Duchamp used a found object in his work, he introduced the term ‘ready-made’ to art. Whether modified, presented in a new context or left unchanged, found objects have had an enduring impact on artistic practice, with artists appropriating and transforming objects in many ways to communicate particular ideas or concepts. Surrealists used ‘the everyday’ as an invocation of humour and satire, whilst Pop Artists directly appropriated items from popular culture. Techniques of the ready-made continue to engage and inspire contemporary artists today. In a bright, immersive and eclectic environment, The Everyday and Extraordinary celebrates the transformation of ordinary objects. Small objects and multiples are presented in a salon-style hang, combined with large sculpture and 2D works arranged as a ‘cabinet of curiosities’, evoking a sense of playfulness, excitement and wonder. The Everyday and Extraordinary is a touring exhibition conceived by Birmingham Museums Trust, in partnership with Towner Art Gallery as part of the Arts Council Collection National Partners Programme 2016-19. 29th September - 6th January 2019

Film London Jarman Award 2018 This exhibition brings together six artists at the forefront of experimentation in filmmaking – Larry Achiampong and David Blandy, Jasmina Cibic, Lawrence Lek, Daria Martin, Hardeep Pandhal and Margaret Salmon – who are nominated for this year’s Film London Jarman Award. Inspired by visionary filmmaker Derek Jarman, the Award recognises and supports artists working with moving image. The selection from this year’s shortlist once again illustrates the spirit of imagination and inventiveness within the medium, with works that explore both new practices in relation to digital image making and fresh approaches to traditional filmmaking. 13th October - 28th October 2018
Simon Ling
Towner presents an exhibition of new and recent works by Simon Ling, the artist’s first solo presentation in a UK public institution. Ling’s paintings focus on how our experience of the world is created through a sustained attentiveness to how we look at it. His paintings are generally made both ‘en-plein air’, where his subject matter is found in nondescript urban or rural landscapes, or in his studio where he constructs tableaux of everyday objects. Across all his paintings, as in his most recent work – a series of paintings made from observing an arrangement of logs – we see an intense engagement with perception and the painting process where his concern is to register an emotional equivalence of the visual world described through intense scrutiny. These paintings emphasise what an object looks like or what its material qualities might be, plus the dynamic process of seeing, remembering and the act of painting. 13th October - 27th January 2019

Sing low...? Sing in the shower or bath? Concentus want to hear from you!
Always keen to enhance their choral balance for the perfect performance, local choir Concentus is looking to top up their Tenors, and boost their baritones and basses. Already too technical for you? Well, the choir is looking for lower voice ranges to join them. With plenty of sopranos and altos, the members who sing in the lower register want to swell their strength and sound. Singing a part that is not generally the tune can be a challenge, especially if you don’t read music, so there is strength in numbers! If you have a voice that you think would blend well with theirs, then why not give it a try? You won’t have to sing a solo (unless you want to of course!), and plenty of support will be given by the rest of the choir. Rehearsals are on Mondays, and additional Fridays as required, at 7.30pm at the JPK Centre in Church Street, Old Town, Eastbourne.
07759 298184 (office hours) 01323 899373 (after 6.30pm)
For more information on the choir and how to join, please visit www.concentus-sings.com, or call Claire – 07920 430162, or Sue – 07789 343514. The is looking forward to welcoming you.

WHY PETER SELLERS AND ELVIS PRESLEY WERE AN EMBARRASSMENT Husband and wife Eastbourne authors Tony and Heather Flood are supporting Children with Cancer UK by making donations from their book sales and are offering signed copies at reduced prices in a special promotion. They include Tony’s celebrity book My Life with the Stars STARS, containing revelations and amusing anecdotes about Elvis Presley, George Best, Frank Sinatra, Joan Collins, Muhammad Ali, Barbra Streisand and Bobby Moore plus a host more big name personalities he interviewed as a journalist and Sky TV executive. My Life with the Stars reveals that Peter Sellers made his wife Britt Ekland squirm about his infactuation with royalty; how star-struck Elvis Presley was an embarrassment to Tom Jones; how Joan Collins’ words led to her co-star being sacked and describes a British actress’ date from hell with Frank Sinatra. And Tony tells that a glamorous blonde gave him her room key, wrapped in her underwear, to pass on to George Best. Also on offer are Tony’s fantasy adventure The Secret Potion, recommended by actress June Whitfield and Tony’s spicy crime thriller Triple Tease, endorsed by best-selling author Peter James.

Younger readers are catered for by Heather’s Mousey Mousey children’s books, and Giant Sticker Monster and Other Children’s Stories, which have featured prominently in the Amazon top 100. Tony says: ‘In addition to penning books on various genres, Heather and I also run creative writing sessions, write theatre reviews and previews, and I give talks at hotels and holiday centres, including Warner, who have given me a contract. I continuue to discover ‘secrets’ and light-heared anecdotes about those in the world of showbiz, and will soon be bringing out a new edition of my celebrity book. One tip Tony gives for new authors, whatever genre they are writing, is to ask well-known writers and celebrities to endorse their books. He explains: “I benefited from the encouragement given to me by best selling authors Peter James and Tamara McKinley, who also writes under Ellie Dean, and television star Brian Capron. ‘Heather and I raise money for charity by giving donations from our books to Children with Cancer UK. You can obtain signed copies for £5.50 (including postage and packing) of My Life With the Stars; The Secret Potion; Mousey Mousey and the Witches’ Spells; Mousey Mousey and the Witches’ Revenge and Giant Sticker Monster and Other Children’s Stories by sending cheques payable to ‘Sportsworld Communications’ to: Special Book Offer, 24 Brisbane Quay, Eastbourne, East Sussex, BN23 5PD. The special reduced price for Triple Tease is £7.50. Further details and offers, including the launch of Heather’s much acclaimed new fantasy adventure Purple Mist are available from www.fantasyadventurebooks.com and www.celebritiesconfessions.com Tony says: ‘In addition to writing and giving talks, I have also performed comedy routines, and greatly enjoyed starring on television with actor Alan Baker in ‘When Variety was King’, filmed at the Royal Hippodrome Theatre, Eastbourne, a few years ago.’ And, at the ripe old age of 74, Tony still plays football with Sovereign Harbour Veterans on Sunday mornings.

Based on Seaside (at Brodie Hall, within the grounds of Christ Church), the Mission opens as a drop-in centre, from 8am to 3.30pm every weekday. Some 50-60 guests come in daily, including the homeless, unemployed, ex-offenders, those struggling with various addictions or mental health issues, the bereaved, the lonely, and others whose lives are in crisis and who don’t know where else to turn for help. As well as serving nourishing hot food, the Mission gives out clothing, bedding, sleeping bags and toiletries to those who need them. All the Mission’s services are provided free of charge. The centre offers a friendly, non-judgemental welcome, a listening ear, and a range of support services including form-filling, help with benefits and housing queries, and sign-posting to specialist care agencies. As well as being a safe place just to ‘hang out’, guests take the opportunity to play chess, read a book or newspaper, join in with the art club, or help in the herb/vegetable garden. Do check our Facebook page, sign up as a ‘friend’ on our website (matthew25mission.org) or call Graham on 07484 152210 for more information.

Lunch at Church Lane Tea Room To judge a book by it’s cover can be frowned upon, after all, first impressions often belie the whole truth. However, Church Lane Tea Rooms is bucking that particular trend. Because what you see here, is exactly what you get. Set on the corner of Church Lane, this cosy almost homely haunt is serving up food just as tempting as it’s kerb appeal. There are several certainties you can rely on with Steve at the helm of this bustling tea room: good home-cooked food, made with the freshest local ingredients, is one of them. Soup will always feature on the ever changing blackboard, in some guise – pea, watercress and spinach, so green was the bowl I could literally feel it’s desperate attempts to cleanse my unhealthy lifestyle with each spoonful. As with a lot of things in life, it is wise to pace yourself during a Church lane lunch. It’s all about the long game here, with a three-tiered lemon drizzle shaped medal at the end. If it’s a sandwich you’re looking for to fuel the afternoon perhaps try the hummus, grated carrot and spinach, perfect for vegan friends. Or how about salmon and cream cheese? Goats cheese with red onion marmalade, is on my must-eat list next time. Another of those certainties you can rely on at Church Lane is ‘hearty’. I’m talking pies. Freshly made, crumbling pastry, encasing generous pieces of chicken, ham, beef – whatever has been cooked that day. Or you may like to try the brie and cranberry quiche, which was superb. If you are lucky you’ll arrive on a day when the infamous ‘Sussex Pie’ graces the menu. The recipe is a closely guarded secret. I have it on good authority that Church Lane is one of the only places it can be found. Church Lane Tea Room lunch: It’s locally sourced. It’s homemade. And it’s downright delicious.
Tel. Church Lane Tea Room on 07933 843710. Open daily, 9am to 4.30pm.

helping hands Eastbourne Branch Opening Helping Hands recently celebrated the launch of their new Eastbourne branch on Carlisle Road, with a wellattended grand opening reception. The reception was hosted by many of Helping Hands’ customers and carers, who all enjoyed the sandwiches, cake and conversation. Head of Home Care for the South East Nicholas Barker was also there, who welcomed and thanked everyone for attending. The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Gill Mattock was also at the opening ceremony and thanked Helping Hands for choosing to locate their latest branch in Eastbourne. They also cut the ribbon and officially declared the branch open. Nicholas proudly stated: ‘We are growing and expanding our network of branches and it was a real pleasure to welcome everyone to our new branch in Eastbourne. It was also a real pleasure to see some of our existing customers and carers –
they are after all what makes Helping Hands so special. A further delight for me personally, was that Gill the local Mayor was also able to meet some of great customers and carers on the day. I also would like to thank Gill for her time and her kind words. We at Helping Hands are a company that puts people first and we make sure that we give everyone the best support we can, whether they are a carer or a customer. We welcome anybody just to pop into branch for a cup of tea and to find out more!’ Sue Hoeppner, the manager of the new branch, also says: ‘As the Branch Manager for Eastbourne, I was so pleased that some of the wonderful customers we’ve been supporting and our new carers could attend the opening. We’ve all had a great morning meeting each other and obviously we have enjoyed eating lots of lovely cake, which was even hand made by my daughter! I’d like to personally thank the Mayor for attending and for cutting the ribbon! Myself and my team are really looking forward to getting out and about to meet the people of Eastbourne, as well as helping those in need.’ Family-run Helping Hands has been providing support through live-in and hourly care services for customers across England and Wales since 1989. The new Eastbourne Branch offers fully-trained care specialists, providing care support to people aged 18 and above through hourly visiting care – including companionship, cooking and cleaning, and personal care – as well as condition-led care support, clinical, palliative, respite and emergency care. Helping Hands home care currently has 81 branches across the UK and Wales, with this figures set to increase this year.

Seven Steps to the Perfect Pumpkin Lantern l Choose a decent sized, rounded pumpkin. Fresh unblemished ones are best. Work on newspaper as pumpkin carving is messy! l Use a serrated blade to cut a lid. Make sure the hole is big enough so that you can scoop out the flesh inside. l Use a large spoon or ice cream scoop to remove the pulp and seeds. Thin the walls a little too by scraping away some of the flesh. This makes carving easier and allows more light through. l It’s best to draw your design in marker first. Bold shapes are easiest. For a professional finish use a paper
template. You can draw your own or download one; tape it to the pumpkin then use a sharp pointed tool, like a knitting needle or nail, to poke holes around the design. when you remove the paper, the design will be left on the pumpkin. l A sharp, serrated knife will work best to cut out your design. Start at the centre and work outwards using short, saw-like strokes for better control. l Rub some petroleum jelly on to the exposed parts of the pumpkin. This stops those areas turning brown. l If you’re using a real candle, put it in a small glass. Cut holes in the lid to allow heat and smoke to escape. Fairy lights and battery-operated candles are the safest and best options for lighting. Visit www.pumpkinpile.com for some great stencils and ideas. Sarah Davey

A view from the Potting Shed
There are times I threaten to astro-turf my entire garden, but then I remember the smell of freshly mown grass and how lovely it is to walk through the dew, and I relent. By October lawn growth has slowed so you can raise your mowing height by at least one setting until mid-spring next year. If, like mine, your lawn sprouts moss the moment it rains, raise the mowing height even more so that at least 1 to 2cm of grass shows above the moss after grass-cutting. Damp grass builds up inside the mower so give the mower a good brush, scrape or hose down after every use. This necessary housekeeping prolongs the life of your mower. After the middle of October there is no point applying weed-killer, so if you haven’t been diligent in weed ic o op f

ACER
October is the best time for aerating the lawn. I used a fork for years until I bought a hollow-tine aerator three years ago, and now I’m a convert. You can’t overdo it, insert them every few inches until you’re fed-up. It’s a great work-out. The hollow tines pull out little cores that look like fat worms. Leave them in place to recycle the nutrients. Aerating improves drainage and allows air, nutrients and rain to move down to the roots rather than sitting at the surface. It’s best to fertilise the lawn after aerating if possible. October is quite a good month for fertilising the lawn if you haven’t already got around to it. Not only does fertilisation give you a fantastic lawn ready for the winter but also offers some protection from the ravages of winter temperatures and diseases. Make sure you collect fallen leaves weekly to discourage moss and disease. Happy Gardening! Rachael Leverton

The acer is commonly known as maple with around 128 different species, most are common to Asia with a few seen in Europe, Northern Africa and North America. The sycamore maple is the most common acer seen in Europe. Acers are known for their spectacular leaf colour in autumn. The Japanese maple - Acer palmatum however is a small deciduous tree suitable for growing in containers, it being a slow growing variety. This species has been in cultivation in Japan for over three hundred years. Also known as the mountain maple, it can be seen in both altitudes of 3,600feet and in forested areas in China, Taiwan and Korea. Maples are of course the source of maple syrup, particular species are tapped for their sugary sap, which is then boiled to produce the syrup. The wood is also valuable and made into items such as butchers’ blocks, bowling alley lanes, musical instruments and baseball bats. The Japanese acer is suitable for the art of bonsai as it copes with the reducing of its leaves and branches producing an attractive show-piece.
control the only option will be hand-pulling them. Moss becomes more evident as the weather cools but you’re too late for raking by now. On the other hand, if the weather is still warm and the ground is dry, apply moss killers, rake it out, reseed and water.
