April and May 2017– Issue 45

Hello...

...and welcome to the April and May issue of the Eastbourne Old Town Crier. So Easter falls in April this year, with Good Friday on the 14th, Easter Day on Sunday 16th, and don’t forget it’s a bank holiday Monday on the 17th. Other notable dates in April are the Oxford and Cambridge boat race on Sunday 2nd, followed by the Grand National on Saturday 8th, then it’s St George’s Day and Shakespeare Day on Sunday 23rd. So plenty to celebrate, especially if you’re a winner! The month of May also gives us two bank holidays – the 1st and the 29th, happy days! In this issue we have news from the Towner Art Gallery on page 16 and information about East Sussex Movie Makers on page 19, whilst local author Gary Tulley has published his latest novel, Down, But Not Out – details on page 20. Lushington Chiropractic is holding a Well Being Day on April 26th, plus there’s lot’s more to see and do on the What’s On pages, 34 to 41. Have fun in April and May and enjoy your issue! A NEW ORCHESTRA FOR THE SOUTH EAST Led by South Coast native William Kunhardt, the Arensky Chamber Orchestra (ACO), Britain’s orchestra of revolutionaries, made their South Coast debut in March 2017. Their first project, Sea Fever, was a classical experience inspired by the ocean. Sea Fever toured the Cultural Coastal Trail Galleries, with performances at Eastbourne’s Towner Gallery on March 4th, Bexhill’s De La Warr Pavilion on March 8th, and Hastings’ Jerwood Gallery on March 10th. It will be followed by Aulanko, an exploration of Sibelius’s 5th Symphony, at Eastbourne’s new Birley Centre in June.

Classical Music. But not as you know it

The ACO’s mantra is to make classical music more social, meaningful and dramatic, without losing its depth or sincerity. They work with mixologists to invent cocktails inspired by the music, served during concerts. They host pre-concert ‘warm up acts’ and post-concert ‘chamber jams’. They also give ‘live programme notes’ where the orchestra tells the story of the music from the stage. They shun concert halls, preferring clubs, galleries, and urban spaces. The orchestra’s main performances are of Masterpieces in Miniature – large orchestral works reduced for chamber ensembles of 16-20. ‘They allow us to take music out of large, impersonal concert halls and into more intimate, modern settings,’ says ACO Director of Collaboration Eddy Hackett. ‘They also reveal fascinating details that get missed in the full versions’. In Sea Fever, the orchestra will perform world premieres of Britten’s Sea Interludes and Debussy’s La Mer ‘in miniature’. The ACO has recorded for Classic FM, worked with leading soloists like Benjamin Grosvenor and Jennifer Pike, and collaborated with artists ranging from video DJs to dancers. The group’s players are the most indemand young artists in the country. They come from major orchestras, like the Royal Philharmonic and London Symphony, and leading chamber music groups. In 2016, the orchestra enjoyed its second sell-out season in a row, won praise from the critics of the Telegraph, Guardian and Independent, and saw the average age of its listeners fall 10 years below leading statistics. For more, visit www.theaco.co.uk.

Building a permanent home in the South East

Sea Fever is funded by the Arts Council and aims to build the foundations for a permanent, year-round ACO series in the region. This series will give local artists in many genres opportunities to collaborate with the orchestra, creating a new culture of innovation and crossarts collaboration throughout the region. In time, it will redefine iconic local landmarks as surprising live music venues. The orchestra will also bring its education programme to the area. As part of Aulanko, the ACO will run a two-day composition workshop for 150 children – from Grade 8 students to untrained first-timers.

Artistic Director, William Kunhardt – a homegrown talent

The tour is the brainchild of Artistic Director William Kunhardt. Kunhardt went to school in Eastbourne, winning a music scholarship to Eastbourne College. At 18, he left for London to study violin at the Royal College of Music, quickly transitioning into conducting. In 2014, Kunhardt won the James Conlon Prize at Aspen Festival, Colorado, launching his career internationally. Since then, he has gone on to work with orchestras in Asia, America, and Europe and with soloists like Benjamin Grosvenor and Sarah Chang. However, his passion remains the ACO, which he founded as a student in 2009. ‘With a strong London base, my priority for the ACO is our national presence. I grew up in Eastbourne – the area is part of who I am; its landscapes still inspire me and I remain closely connected with it. When we approached the Arts Council about expansion, I only had one destination in mind. I had to bring my work back home. ‘This is already an artistically exciting area – we wanted to build on that. That’s why we’re trying to create something long-term. We don’t just want to perform once then leave. We want to create a platform that brings the artistic community together and inspires new ways of working. We want to enrich the lives of local people and school children. In short, we want to leave a legacy.’ At the time of writing, the De La Warr performance has already sold out, with tickets going fast for both the Jerwood and Towner performances. It looks as though the area has already embraced the idea of classical music with a twist.

Property and Financial Affairs As the name suggests, this LPA authorises your Attorney(s) to make decisions about your property and financial affairs. This may include buying, selling or renting property and managing your savings or paying bills and dealing with state benefits.

Plan for your future Why we should ALL have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) You care enough to ensure that your home and savings pass to the right people after you’ve gone... but what protection do you have in place if you’re still alive, but unable to make decisions for yourself? There may come a time in your life when you are unable to manage your own affairs owing to some form of incapacity and you will need someone to act on your behalf.

Even when we are young, we can find ourselves incapacitated owing to illness or injury and it can be invaluable having a reliable person, who is able to manage your affairs and remove these anxieties at a time when you most need peace of mind. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? Lasting Powers of Attorney are legal documents appointing someone of your choice to take decisions for you if you are unable.

Even when we are young we can find ourselves incapacitated

An elderly relative losing capacity is difficult enough for loved ones to deal with, without the added worry that finances are becoming muddled or having concerns about where they live and who looks after them.

By creating a Lasting Power of Attorney in advance, you can ensure that if the worst were to happen, you can rest assured that both your financial affairs and personal welfare are in safe hands.

Health and Welfare This LPA covers decisions about your personal welfare, which can include where you live, how you are cared for and may provide the authority to give or refuse consent to medical care or life sustaining treatment on your behalf. Preferences and Instructions You can place legally binding restrictions and conditions on your Attorney(s) powers and the scope of authority they have within the LPA. Revoking the Power You can revoke or cancel the LPA providing you have the mental capacity to do so. If a spouse or civil partner is the donor or attorney, divorce or dissolution will automatically revoke the power, as will bankruptcy in the case of Property and Financial Affairs.

The Grand National is one of those institutions, like the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, or the final of Strictly Come Dancing, where even those who never set foot in a betting shop open their wallet and enter the office sweepstake. But did you know that on April 3rd 1993, the worldfamous horse race was reduced to a shambles? A disastrous sequence of events began just before the race was due to start, when protestors ran onto the track near the first fence. They were removed and the race officials asked horses and riders to line up again. Then there were two false starts caused by horses becoming tangled with the starting tape. On the second false start, although the red recall flag was waved it didn’t unfurl, and 30 of the 39 riders raced away. Members of the crowd and officials all tried to recall the jockeys but without success. 11 riders completed the first circuit before they pulled up, and seven riders never realised anything was wrong. They completed the gruelling course and raced to the finish line. Esha Ness, a 50-1 outsider trained by Jenny Pitman and ridden by John White, crossed the line first but the race was declared void, depriving the horse’s owner, Patrick Bancroft, of the £76,000 prize money. However, she went on to win again two years later, with Royal Athlete. Sarah Davey Photo: https://uk.pinterest.com

Unusual Easter Traditions

How will you celebrate Easter? If you need ideas, check out these unusual traditions:

Pace Egg Plays were once a widespread way of celebrating across rural England. Performed on Good Friday, the drama involves a form of a combat between a villain named Old Tosspot and the hero St George. Historically the actors were working class men and women who toured the villages, performing in pubs and on the street as a way of earning extra money. In the plays someone is always killed, this may be St George or a Turkish Knight known as Bold Slasher. The poor fellow is however revived by a comic doctor, linking to the Easter themes of death and rebirth. The use of the word Pace is linked to the Latin word Pacha which translates to Easter. The egging part

comes from the fact that performers were given eggs which were wrapped in onion skins and carefully boiled. They’d receive other gifts too, including money as an incentive to perform by the crowd. Some believe the phrase ‘to egg someone on’ originates from when rival groups of performers found themselves in the same village and traded insults, had wooden sword fights or even tried to steal each others Pace Eggs. The Pace Eggs were sometimes rolled, but the practice of egg rolling has become a tradition all on its own both in the UK and abroad. Usually hard-boiled eggs are decorated and rolled down a grassy hill, with an ensuing competition to see whose egg can roll fastest and remain unharmed. The exact symbolism of egg rolling isn’t clear, but as eggs have links to the Easter and Spring themes of rebirth, renewal and fertility, this seems to provide some reasoning for it. If you are looking for a different type of activity on Easter Monday, then you might like to consider the traditions of Whipping Monday, linked to countries such as Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In Slovakia, women are doused by men with water and whipped with braided willow branches. This is said to symbolise youth and strength, and make women healthy for the Spring. The men then get a reward from the lady in question, which is a dyed egg, a ribbon tied around their whip, and for adults an invite in for some food and vodka. Some men also receive coins. In the Czech version there is no water, just the whipping, and here the implement is called the pomlazka and the tradition ends at noon. I think I’ll stick with egg-rolling! Whatever you end up doing, have a Happy Easter! Susan Brookes-Morris Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Towner Art Gallery

Becky Beasley: Ous

29th April – 9th July

Becky Beasley’s photographs and sculptures, while deeply personal, often develop through an engagement with the ideas and works of other artists and writers. On this occasion, one such figure is artist and designer Eric Ravilious. Towner has one of the largest public collections of Ravilious’ works, and this archive became a place for Beasley to start from and journey into. Along the way she encounters Paul Nash and Enid Marx. Across six room installations, Ous will explore Beasley’s ongoing interest in specific qualities raised by Ravilious’ practice: space, flatness, light, abstraction and nature, as well as his creative friendships. Through the filter of the artist’s deep engagement with the histories and possibilities of photography, the exhibition reflects by turns on themes of gardens, interiors, weather, mourning and human encounter. Featuring newly commissioned linoleum floor designs, photographs and sculptural works, these installations can be experienced as a gently unfolding environment in which questions of interior and exterior become blurred. Space can be experienced as an image, through a subtly dreamlike journey, at once pastoral and sensual.

Ravilious & Co: The Pattern of Friendship

27th May – 17th September Based on new research and telling a story that has never been told before, this exhibition of the artist and designer Eric Ravilious (1903-1942), coincides with the 75th anniversary of his death. It explores the significant relationships and working collaborations between Ravilious and an important group of friends and affiliates, including Paul and John Nash, Enid Marx, Barnett Freedman, Tirzah Garwood, Edward Bawden, Thomas Hennell, Douglas Percy Bliss, Peggy Angus, Helen Binyon and Diana Low. The exhibition will include many of Ravilious’ key works, shown alongside both well-known and less seen works by his contemporaries, including work by each artist that has never before been exhibited publicly, and will focus chronologically on key moments when the work and careers of these artists coincided, overlapped or was particularly pertinent to the others, such as their time at the Royal College of Art, the 1927 St George’s exhibition, their time spent at Furlongs and Newhaven in Sussex, and their various roles in the Second World War. The exhibition represents the wide range of media in which the artists worked, from watercolours to woodcuts, lithographic prints, book jackets and illustrations, patterned papers, and wallpaper and fabric design.

IT’S TIME FOR RONNIE TO PUT HIS GLOVES BACK ON... The plastic gangster is back for revenge in Down But Not Out, Gary’s second gritty crime novel in his ‘Fingerless Gloves’ trilogy Ex-amateur boxer and professional boxing trainer, Gary Tulley, has once again put pen to paper to bring us Down But Not Out, his next book in ‘The Fingerless Gloves’ trilogy, which features former boxer Ronnie Callaghan. ‘Having been associated with the boxing industry for most of my life, in an amateur/professional capacity, I felt compelled to put my personal experiences and vast knowledge of the “Bleeding Business” down onto paper,’ Gary comments.

Gary, an Eastbourne resident, started boxing when he was five years old in Peckham. He had a very successful career in boxing and gained his amateur Boxing Association Licence, allowing him to train boxers, and worked alongside Ronnie Davies who is well known in the boxing world. Gary set up Golden Gloves Boxing Club in Seaside, Eastbourne for young people who were interested in boxing. Unfortunately however, in 2003 Gary was diagnosed with cancer and had to give up the boxing club. It was after the cancer diagnosis that Gary took up writing again. He had previously lived in Brighton, then moved to Devon, where he started writing and had two books published – Once Upon a Spook and The Spook who Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Down but Not Out is the second book of Gary Tulley’s ‘The Fingerless Gloves’ series. In the first book, we met Ronnie Callaghan, an ex-professional boxer, who divided his time between market trading and running a boxing gym. One day, however, he was given a sharp shock when his comfortable lifestyle was threatened. Either by choice or coincidence, an unwelcome face from his past confronted him: a certain ‘plastic gangster’ by the name of Paul Rossetti. Back with a vengeance in Down But Not Out, Paul Rossetti has suffered six long years in a pre-determined exile – but those years have not been wasted. His lust for revenge has only been put on hold. It’s festered and matured into what will surely be a bloody climax when he confronts his nemesis, Ronnie. This will be his last remaining chance to sate his revenge, with no room left for error. Callaghan, and his lifelong mentor Siddie Levy, on the other hand, seriously beg to differ! They have unwittingly become aware of Paul Rossetti’s presence in Stonewater and they have ideas of their own, should any unforeseeable grief come into play. Along the way are multiple hurdles that test the individuals on both sides. The inevitable outcome will undoubtedly be determined by who’s prepared to jump the highest... ‘Some of the characters I’ve used are loosely based on people that I’ve met and worked witºh within the business. You can’t begin to talk about it unless you’ve done it!’ adds Gary. Now retired, he is currently working on book three of ‘The Fingerless Gloves’ trilogy.

From help going to the toilet or knowing you like two sugars in your tea to help medication go down, to help with personal care and ensuring that you have nutritious meals, our hourly visiting care means you can continue living the life you want. Jodie says, ‘Our aim with hourly visiting care is about helping you to live independently. You can have care from just half an hour a week up to several visits a day, our service is built around your personal needs. ‘Myself and my team provide everything from companionship, housekeeping, through to providing more complex healthcare support for people with

conditions such as Dementia, MS, Spinal Injuries, Parkinson’s, Acquired Brain Injuries and those that have suffered a Stroke. ‘We care about the things that matter to you, whether it’s arriving on time, every time, or knowing you like digestives but not shortbread biscuits, our carers want you to feel safe and confident in the care you receive and they always go the extra mile to ensure that this happens.’ Jodie and the team in Eastbourne know that it can be difficult to ask for help, and recognising that you may need a little more help and having that first conversation is why we are there on hand for you to answer any queries. Jodie and her team want you to feel reassured that you will be met with genuine warmth and compassion from the moment you contact us. After all, at Helping Hands we are here to help you. More about Helping Hands – Family-run Helping Hands has been providing support through live-in and hourly care services for customers across England and Wales since 1989. The new Helping Hands branch offers fully-trained care specialists, providing care support to people of all ages through hourly visiting care.

St George’s Day

Did you know that St George never actually set foot in Britain? It’s believed he was born in Lydda in Palestine, or in Cappadocia (now in central Turkey), and brought up in Palestine. His father was a Roman soldier, and when his parents died, George decided he would travel to Nicomedia (Turkey) to join the Roman army. He served for several years, progressing up the ranks to become an imperial guard of the Emperor. George was a devout Christian, and was tortured and executed for refusing to give up his Christian faith. It’s believed that he was killed on 23rd April 300AD, which

is why St George’s Day is celebrated on April 23rd each year. So where does the dragon come into it? The legend of George and the dragon dates back hundreds of years, to the 11th century, if not earlier. According to the legend, a dragon was terrorising a small village. The villagers would sacrifice their children to appease the dragon. One day George was riding past the village and met a young princess, whose turn it was to be sacrificed. George rescued the girl and offered to slay the dragon for the villagers, if they would convert to Christianity. They agreed, so he killed the dragon. Today the Feast of St George is celebrated in countries across the world, including Syria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. If you’re taking part, perhaps you could adopt the old English custom of wearing a red rose in your lapel on St George’s Day. Kate Duggan

Here’s a pretty how-de-do!” The Mikado of Japan, has devised a unique but ruthless law to keep young men on the straight and narrow, discouraging unseemly practices such as flirting. But the townsfolk of Titipu have come up with their own unique way to get around it... Nanki-Poo, arrives in town (A Wand’ring Minstrel, he) looking for Yum-Yum but soon learns that she is about to be married to Ko-Ko, Lord High Executioner. He plans to end his life by his own hand immediately, declaring he cannot live without her; but Ko-Ko is desperate to find someone to execute, and persuades him to die instead in public ceremony in return for a month of happy marriage. But will the fearful Katisha reveal Nanki-Poo’s dark secret? Who will be next for the chop? Who will end up on Ko-Ko’s “Little List”? Will the Three Little Maids save the day? Yet again, Gilbert satires politics and the rise of the inappropriate to Authority. The Mikado, probably the most popular and recognisable of the G&S musicals includes favourites such as Three Little Maids, A Wand’ring Minstrel I, Tit Willow... The Mikado is Topsy-Turvey fun at its very best!

It’s a little known fact that the berries and inner petals of fuchsias are edible (though it’s worth noting that ‘edible’ doesn’t mean they necessarily taste good!). However there is now a variety bred especially for eating. It’s called ‘Berry’ and produces fruit with a flavour something like a sweet fig. The fuchsia berries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. They don’t have a long shelf life, so pick them when they are soft and squishy and eat them fresh, or freeze small quantities as you collect them, until you have enough to make fuchsia jam or add to muffins, much as you might add blueberries. Happy Gardening. Rachael Leverton to d

There are several different types of bay leaves, but the one commonly used in cooking and which has a high nutrient content has the scientific name, Laurus nobilis. Bay is native to the Mediterranean region and is grown as an evergreen shrub or a small tree. The leaves have been used in cooking and for medicinal purposes since Roman times. The health benefits are numerous, from getting rid of bad cholesterol to improving hair follicles and lowering the levels of stress hormones in the body. A bay tree grown in the ground and not clipped could grow as high as 7.5 metres. Alternatively, planted in a pot where growth is restricted, placed in a sunny spot in the garden and not over watered, the reward will be plenty of glossy green leaves to give flavour to soups, stews and other dishes. It is recommended that bay leaves be removed after cooking as they remain quite tough and sharp edged.

There are lots of lovely varieties. ‘Mrs. Popple’ is tall with red and purple flowers. ‘Mrs. W. P. Wood’ is paler with pearly flowers. I have a soft spot for Whiteknight’s Pearl’, which is a beautiful pale pink. If you have a smaller plot try ‘Tom Thumb’ or ‘Alice Hoffman’.

what

I love hardy fuchsias. They are some of the most rewarding plants to grow. They are easy to propagate, flower well and are not the least bit temperamental. They are named after a 16thcentury German herbalist and physician called Leonard Fuchs. Lots of gardeners struggle to spell fuchsia, but if you think of his name and stick and ‘ia’ on the end you have it! In mild areas or at the seaside they can grow into huge shrubs. Elsewhere hard frosts see off most of the top growth in winter, then new shoots burst up from the soil in the spring, maturing into small shrubs about 2-3 feet / 60-100cm tall.

sure you pinch out the shoot tips frequently. It delays the flowers a little but they will become bushy little plants which produce more flowers in the long run. Once they are mature you can more or less leave them to it. Simply sprinkle a handful or two of fertiliser around them in the spring and again in the summer.

JOBS TO DO IN May & June

3 Various vegetable seeds can be sown now into pots or into the ground – perhaps include something not sown before? 3 Now is the time to get the lawn looking good by applying lawn feed to promote growth and greening it up – carefully read instructions for use before starting. 3 Prune rhododendrons and azaleas after they have finished flowering. 3 Sweet peas can be planted outside in their flowering positions now – being hardy annuals they can withstand any cooler conditions that may still occur.
