April and May 2018 – Issue 51

Hello...

...and welcome to the April and May issue of the Eastbourne Old Town Crier. So the nights are finally drawing out and the days are getting longer, spring must be just around the corner! We begin April with Easter celebrations and Easter Day falling on the 1st, plus it’s April Fool’s Day... so I suggest you’d better be careful when you bite into your Easter eggs! Don’t forget, there’s a bank holiday on Monday 2nd April. Later on in the month it’s St George’s Day and also Shakespeare Day, both on the 23rd. May brings us more bank holidays, the first on Monday 7th and the second on Monday 28th. In this issue we have details of the Eastbourne and Willingdon Ale Trail, page 25. And talking of ale, there’s an exhibition of lithographs commissioned by the Guinness Breweries at the Devonshire Collective Gallery this April, plus various workshops, talks and a pub quiz! (see page 4). Eastbourne banstand’s season of concerts kicks off on Wednesday 2nd May with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and fireworks! What a great start to the spring and summer. Cheers! Art for All

Thursday 5th April – Sunday 29th April, Devonshire Collective Gallery at DC1, 67-69 Seaside Road An exhibition of a rare complete set of the original lithographs commissioned by Guinness Breweries in 1956 and 1962, to celebrate the first edition of The Guinness Book of Records, is going on show at Eastbourne’s Devonshire Collective DC1 Gallery this April. Intended to be hung in pubs, bars and canteens to promote The Guinness Book of World Records – itself conceived as a marketing tool for Guinness Breweries that would settle disputes in pubs – two sets of lithographs were commissioned in 1956 and 1962, all of which are on display. The prints depict records that reflected typically working class interests at the time: darts, pigeon racing, horse racing, fishing and football. As well as fulfilling the mid-century idea of ‘Art for All’, the prints are an optimistic snapshot of the lives of everyday people in Britain shortly after the war. Art for All is guest curated for Devonshire Collective by Eastbourne-based print collector Emma Mason, who together with her husband Richard, runs a gallery

ROBIN SHELL HEALING ARTS

specialising in original prints by printmakers working in Britain from the post-war period to the present. Emma published a book exploring the story behind the Guinness lithographs in 2016. She says: ‘Whilst I was researching the story of the Guinness Lithographs I collected any of the lithographs that I could find, mostly at auction. Similar to other commercial print projects of the days, such as the Lyons Tea Room prints, the lithographs were usually thrown away after being pinned up in pubs and cafés. So the ones we have today are rare and now very hard to find, especially in good condition. ‘It took me several years of looking but I now have the twelve lithographs that make up the Guinness Lithograph series. I think it might be the only full collection as Guinness do not have these in their archives.’ Running alongside the exhibition are a number of events designed to bring the lithographs and The Guinness Book of Records to life, including: l A schools art competition with winning entries to be displayed in the Devonshire Collective Café during April l A children’s art workshop taking inspiration from Guinness world records of today l An illustrated talk and book signing by Emma Mason on the story of the Guinness Lithographs l A pub quiz evening with Guinness taking questions from both the 1955 and the 2018 Guinness Book of Records. This free exhibition is part of Devonshire Collective’s Threshold programme – the result of a successful bid for more than £55,000 funding from Arts Council England, together with £15,000 from Devonshire West Big Local. It includes an ambitious 16-month performance and visual arts programme, support events and workshops for the growing number of artists living and working locally, and a new series of artist commissions to animate the town. www. devonshirecollective.org.uk

EASTBOURNE ANTIQUES CENTRE The Eastbourne Antiques Centre is a family business run by Paul Klein (below) and his wife Bianca, which includes over 20 professional traders dealing in and offering a wide selection of antiques and collectables. Opened in 2011, it quickly grew to accommodate over 40 cabinets selling anything from bronze figures to taxidermy, coins to militaria and diamond rings to tea sets. Paul’s father was an estate agent and auctioneer, so Paul grew up surrounded by the history of antiques, his passion and decades of previous experience in this business led him to settle in Eastbourne and open his centre. You may recognise Paul from the TV – he has participated in a number of antiques hunt and auction-style programmes.

Tip:

To get the best price for your jewellery – clean it with diluted washing-up liquid and a soft toothbrush – the difference will amaze you. The most expensive items the shop currently has are diamond jewellery. The rarest item the shop has discovered was a late-19th century Swiss Polyphon with 25 discs in mint condition. One of Paul’s favourite items he has traded was a massive French bronze, ormolu and marble Paris made mantle clock, by Picard and Hublain. Paul’s specialist area is jewellery and silver items, and Paul’s wife, Bianca, specialises in good quality vintage and antique silver jewellery.

Not only does Paul sell items he buys locally but he travels the world locating items of interest and has many contacts across the globe he can trade with. This network enables him to source accurate information on many items and get you competitive prices for items you may want to sell.

Tip:

don’t ever polish bronze – the deeper the patina, the more valuable the figure. The centre has the largest collection of antique vintage and second hand jewellery outside of London, along with many other objects. Some of the sellers in the Antiques Centre have cabinets that specialise in: Jewellery and Objets d’Art – Robert (Cabinet 33) Jewellery and collectables – Avril (57) Militaria and Scientific instruments – Paul (65) Amber specialist – Angela (10) Meissen and Continental porcelain – Rudi (66) Dress jewellery – Micheal (64) Tin plate and other toys – Robert (15) Silver jewellery – Sue (44 & 44a) O Gauge specialist and military medals – Brian (32) Silver and glass – Clive (29 & 57) Royal Dalton, Moorcroft, antique cameras – Alan (2 & 3) Coin specialist – Nick (31) Toy specialist – Graham (24 & 25)

Did you know?

Over polishing silver will wear it out, don’t use abrasive creams, a simple silver cloth will suffice.

Tip: Hallmarks denote where, when

and who made the silver or gold item. There are usually four marks; The Lion Rampant – denoting it’s made in England, a town symbol, i.e. anchor or crown, a letter to denote the manufacture date, and the fourth will be the maker’s mark. You can find out more about these marks at www.silvermakersmarks. co.uk Like all good collectors Paul buys more than he sells, and is currently expanding the shop in Terminus Road to be able to display more furniture and accommodate larger cabinets for his specialists. Please make sure you pop in soon to find that elusive toy from your childhood or that one last missing piece from the silver cutlery set you’ve been seeking for 45 years.

3rd February – 20th May 2018 Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne Natural Selection explores connections between ornithology and art, and offers different ways of thinking about what constitutes nature, collaboration and parental influence.

Natural Selection marks the culmination of a five-year collaboration between artist Andy Holden and his father, the well-known ornithologist Peter Holden. Their collaborative work takes us on an ornithological journey: from the building of nests to the collecting of eggs. Featuring objects, sculptures, videos and animation, the exhibition has been conceived to celebrate an astonishing diversity of natural forms and embrace different ways of looking. At first glance, it may appear to be about one kind of knowledge – natural history – but it is equally concerned with social history, aesthetics and communication. Through their investigation into often over-looked subjects, the Holdens open up different areas of enquiry such as morphology, evolution, intelligence and creativity, as well as reflecting on the nature of collaboration and parental influence. On 28th April, Andy and Peter Holden will present ‘Notes on Birdsong: An Evening Chorus’, an interactive musical talk, with their musical co-conspirator Roger Illingworth of The Grubby Mitts. Notes on Birdsong will explore the art and science of birdsong with the help of live sound performance, moving images and archival footage. CONCENTUS Choir

Compose for Concentus

Concentus, known as Eastbourne’s ‘choir with a heart’, is looking for a new song to sing at its Summer Concert this year. At the end of last year they threw down a challenge to both budding and established composers, for a fresh, unsung choral piece. The composition should be no longer than 4 minutes in length and suitable for a mixed vocal range (soprano, alto, tenor and bass), with or without piano accompaniment. At the time of press, the judges were deliberating over the entries, with the winner to be announced on the choir’s website. Concentus has welcomed nearly twenty new members in the last three months. When asked what drew them to the choir, one said ‘Joining Concentus was a bit daunting as they are such a professional choral group, but the truth is, the welcome they give you on your first visit is so wonderfully friendly they put you completely at ease. I have joined several choirs, but I have to say Concentus has been my best experience so far.’ Another said ‘I have followed Concentus concerts as an audience member for a number of years

and been so envious of their performances, I can’t believe I am now a member – I love it!’

Triumph For Concentus

As in previous years, local choir Concentus entered the Hastings Music Festival on 9th March, in the Adult Choir class. By far the largest in number amongst those taking part, the choir performed two pieces – ‘The Ground’ from Sunrise Mass, a moving and evocative piece by Ola Gjeilo, and ‘One Day More’, the powerful and emotive chorus from Les Misérables. Having incorporated the rehearsing of these pieces into their regular Monday night rehearsals for their upcoming Summer concert, the choir was conducted by Jo Fowler who led them with enthusiasm and confidence. The judges were clearly impressed with both performances. Of the first number the adjudicator said ‘What a magical opening. Full of rich tones, and stylish work’. She went on to comment about One Day More: ‘Dynamic contrasts added to the expressive singing and excellent modulations’. Overall the choir was praised for expressive singing and presentation, and skills in having memorised both items. The competition was tough this year with some excellent performances but, with a total of 89 points out of 100, Concentus came a very creditable second, missing out on taking home the winner’s trophy by just one point. The second-place certificate was awarded with honours. Musical director Adrian White commented, ‘As usual the choir threw themselves at the challenge with enthusiasm and commitment. I am so proud of them; they never cease to impress me with their willingness to take on difficult and challenging pieces.’ For more details about the choir, please visit the Concentus website at www.concentus-sings.com or contact Lou Soper, Concentus Assistant Music Director, at info@concentus-sings.com or by telephone on 07799 116653. April Fool! The origins of April Fools’ Day seems to be lost in time however there was certainly a Roman festival called hilaria around that time of year, to celebrate the vernal equinox. The most popular theory about ‘modern’ April Fools’ Day is that it began to take shape in late-16th century France. At that time, there was a switch to the Gregorian Calendar under Charles IX. Prior to this there had been a New Year’s week (25th March-1st April), and under the Gregorian system, New Year’s Day fell on 1st January. As with any change there was some resistance, and many people stubbornly refused to accept the new system, continuing to celebrate New Year on 1st April. These people were ridiculed and labelled ‘fools’ by the general populace, and were often the butt of jokes and pranks. They were known as poissons d’avril, or April fish, possibly because a naïve young fish is easily caught. Over the years the custom of prank-playing spread to the general population and eventually to Britain, where schoolboy pranks are still the order of the day. Watch out!

A view from the Potting Shed Plant a butterfly garden Fascinating fact...Winston Churchill loved butterflies so much he had a garden designed specifically to attract them. His home was the beautiful Chartwell, but you don’t need a grand estate to attract butterflies as they will happily flock to the tiniest plot if the planting is right. When planting for butterflies we need to consider their life-cycle, and of course they start life as caterpillars. Butterflies choose to lay their eggs where there is a good food supply for their hungry offspring. A patch of nettles in a sunny spot will attract the red admiral, the small tortoiseshell, the painted lady and the peacock. If you want the common blue (though sadly these are not that common now), plant some birdsfoot trefoil, also known as lady’s fingers, and properly named Lotus corniculatus.

Butterfly Essentials

Sunshine – plant butterfly-attracting plants in the sunniest spots. Shelter – the site needs to be out of the wind Roosting spots – butterflies need somewhere to sleep. They prefer to be high so plant climbers like honeysuckles and clematis. Nettles and wildflowers – if space is at a premium try growing them in pots. It works really well. Rachael Leverton to d

Magnolias are named after a French botanist Pierre Magnol around 1703, but have been growing for millions of years. They are said to have originated before bees, so pollination was achieved by beetles. There are deciduous and evergreen varieties, both having attractive flowers – goblet shaped and in pink, white, red, purple or yellow colours. April is the month for early varieties to flower; their leaves follow later. Magnolias are striking and beautiful, symbolising dignity and nobility, and were recognised in ancient China as a sign of womanly beauty and gentleness. In Asia the flowers and leaves are used as food products e.g. tea, a spicy condiment or a vegetable. Look out for these magnificent trees during April in gardens around our town, stand and admire their beauty, and perhaps you may be tempted to plant one in your own garden.

The most famous butterfly-attracting plant is probably Buddleia davidii, hence its other name, the butterfly bush. It grows well in most soils but needs to be pruned back hard every year so the flowers, and hence the butterflies, are kept at eye level. Don’t worry too much if you know very little about pruning, Buddleias are hard to kill! Sedum spectabile must be one of the easiest plants ever to grow and even thrives in my poor soil. Its dusky pink flowers are always smothered in butterflies and bees when they open in late summer. Caryopteris clandonensis, blue mist spirea, is also a wonderful butterfly magnet and very easy to grow. You can buy packets of wild flower seeds and butterfly mixes – try some among your borders and you’ll be rewarded with fluttering, jewel-like visitors all summer.

what

A packet of sweet rocket seeds (Hesperis matronalis) is a good investment. One pack produces flowers in all shades of lilac. They have a sweet scent, which is more powerful in the evening, and as a bonus they attract the orange tip

butterfly. So, having satiated the caterpillars, we need to address the feeding requirements of the adult butterfly.

JOBS TO DO IN APRIL & MAY

3 Weeds will be starting to come up in the

garden so keep the hoe handy to remove them before they get a hold. 3 Check tomato seedlings, if roots have appeared at the bottom of the pots, replant them into a bigger pots with fresh compost. 3 Sawfly can attack gooseberries and currant bushes defoliating them – remove these S-shaped grubs and destroy them. 3 Pots of bulbs need regular watering once their shoots appear, a liquid feed or slow release fertiliser will give them a boost.

SUPPORTED LODGINGS Supported Lodgings may not be a term familiar to many people, but for dozens of vulnerable young adults in East Sussex, it can be an important lifeline. Supported Lodgings is a service provided by East Sussex County Council, which offers young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or living in care, the opportunity to learn the skills they need to move successfully on to independence. The young person in question goes to live with a Supported Lodgings Provider, who offers them a room in their house and support with valuable everyday tasks like putting a wash on, cooking a meal and applying for jobs. Nigel and Debbie Lambert, who live in Denton near Newhaven, are current providers and would like to see more people get involved. ‘If you love young people, and you’ve got a passion for helping young people, you should apply,’ says Debbie. ‘It’s a challenge – a really rewarding challenge,’ says Nigel. ‘But if we didn’t have fun with it, we wouldn’t be doing it.’ Helping with everyday tasks like college applications and understanding bus timetables are just some of the ways they support the young people living with them – giving them the tools they need to move on and live independently. And it’s the small things that can make a big difference. ‘When you’ve helped somebody achieve something that they thought they were never going to achieve, and it can be something very small… it’s just magical. It makes everything seem so worthwhile,’ says Debbie.

you’ll receive a generous allowance for each young person placed with you. They understand that you’ll have questions, and are on hand to help explain any aspects you’re unsure of. Nigel agrees. ‘East Sussex County Council were really helpful in the whole process. The support is superb.’ Unfortunately, misconceptions can get in the way of people applying. For example, people often think they can’t be providers if they’re single, or that they can’t work full-time and offer supported lodgings, neither of which is true. The Lamberts are testament to the latter. ‘Although we both work full time, it doesn’t interfere with our life at all, it’s part of our life. Eastbourne and Willingdon Ale Trail Old Town resident Peter Diplock has launched the Eastbourne and Willingdon Ale Trail. There are five Old Town pubs included in the Ale Trail: the Crown, the Hurst Arms, the Lamb, the Star, and the pub of the year 2017, the Counting House. The Ale Trail runs until the end of November – you fill in your Ale Trail ‘passport’ as you go. Peter says: ‘We started the Ale Trail to celebrate the great local, community pubs we have in Eastbourne. I was born here and have been back in Old Town for a few years now, but have seen some of the other Ale Trails across the county. Locally there are a couple of brewery-led trails, but nothing to encompass the whole of Eastbourne. We are especially blessed in Old Town to have so many fantastic community pubs. The last few years have seen a boom in local brewing, so in addition to the mainstays of the local brewing scene like Harvey’s, we now have new and different brewers like Long Man, Gun Brewery, 1648 and so many more. As well as supporting our excellent local pubs, the Ale Trail provides an excuse to seek out new pubs, and try new beers from new and not-so-new breweries.’ Peter’s family all hail from Old Town (four generations of his family have drunk in Old Town pubs). It is hoped that the Ale Trail will become an annual event. ‘We are a not-for-profit community organisation and we’re all volunteers. We were lucky to have a number of advertisers who took a chance on us, allowing us to print and give away for free nearly 400 copies of the Ale Trail passport this year. With increasing awareness and a higher profile, we are hoping to more than double the numbers next year.’ If you have missed out on a passport, you can get yours by visiting the Facebook page or website. For £3 your Ale Trail passport will be posted to you, with any excess funds going into funding Eastbourne and Willingdon Ale Trail 2019. You can find out more details at facebook.com/ eastbournealetrail, or www.eastbournealetrail.com Photo: Peter Diplock.

At Community Wise there are always things to look forward to. Our shop, Wise Buys, is a true community shop selling and recycling goods donated by generous local people and sold back to the community to help support our work for the community. Wise Buys is open Mondays-Saturdays 10am-4pm with early closing on Wednesdays and Saturdays. We have regular groups supporting individuals and children’s groups. We have recently begun to host our second choir, Accord, on Wednesday mornings, as well as the Archway choir on Tuesday evenings. Winston’s Wish is a charity which supports children affected by bereavement and they are joining us on alternate Mondays. Our free English for Beginners classes have flourished and we welcome new learners on Thursday mornings from 10am. For some people self-improvement offers an opportunity to discover life beyond current difficulties. We host Recovery from abuse and three Health in Mind groups, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health NHS services. Slimming World is at Community Wise on Wednesdays from 5pm, Overeaters Anonymous and Gamblers Anonymous are here on Thursday evenings and on Saturday mornings, Co-dependents Anonymous meets at 11am. There is a chaplain present on Thursday and Friday mornings and we are always happy to put people in contact with someone who might help. Two church congregations meet here on Sundays – Living Stones at 10.30am and Mosaic church at 3.30pm. We have recently concluded a survey of Community Wise users. 3% of people who answered the survey said that they come here primarily to be with people and 82% would recommend Community Wise as a place to make friends and meet people. Every Friday Gather is at Community Wise from 11am. It’s the place to come and share food together, as well as the community lunch on 9th April and 14th May. Everyone is welcome here and there’s lots to look forward to this year. Call in and find out for yourself. Come and be community at Community Wise.
