April & May 2015 – Issue 33
Hello...
...and welcome to the April and May issue. Hooray, the clocks have gone forward (unless you’ve forgotten!) and the evenings are drawing out... nice. This April we celebrate Easter Day on the 5th, with holidays on Good Friday 3rd and Monday 6th and also it’s St George’s Day on the 23rd, see page 29. Don’t forget there are two bank holiday Mondays on 4th and 25th May! In this issue we have details of St Mary’s Church Spring Fayre and news from the Friends of Motcombe Gardens. Do you fancy having a go at bowling, see page 7 or how about a midnight walk to raise money for charity, see page 10? The Girl Guides are also looking for volunteers, see page 8. All this and much more in this issue. Enjoy! A view from the Potting Shed depth of about 4 inches (10cm), giving the fork a good wiggle each time. Sweep sharp sand into the holes with a broom. Then mow the lawn with the blades set on high and remove the clippings. Two weeks later apply a combined weed killer and fertilizer. If you’re lucky it will rain within 24 hours. If not just water it in. Mow weekly to keep the lawn thick and healthy.

PROJECT PLEASURE pril is a great month for a garden project; one which can be achieved in a morning or an afternoon, and which improves a few square metres. You’ll feel you’ve achieved something wonderful and if you break the whole garden into a series of small projects it suddenly appears more manageable. Here are three to get you started.

JOBS TO DO IN APRIL/May
3 The lawn is now likely to be growing rapidly. It will need a cut at least once and maybe twice a week. 3 Seeds and seedlings growing in the greenhouse may need watering every day. So give them a check every day. 3 Outdoor seedlings may be coming up so protect them from slugs and snails. If you don’t they may disappear overnight. 3 Bedding plants are now on sale in many shops, garden centres and nurseries. They must be placed in the greenhouse or cold-frame for a few weeks to harden off. An overnight frost will harm them. 4

Grass: Lawns always look bedraggled after the winter. Remove dead grass by raking the surface with a wire toothed rake. Improve drainage on heavy soil by spiking it with a garden fork every 6 inches (15cm) or so, to a
the m
th on
Strawberry Pots: You don’t need a huge patch to enjoy growing strawberries. Plant a few in pots as a treat. Buy young, rich green plants which have been certified virus-free. Plant 3-4 in a 12-inch (30cm) clay pot. The crowns (where shoots meet roots) should be level with the compost surface. Water them in and stand in the shelter of a house wall. If you have a greenhouse or a cold frame they will establish more quickly and fruit earlier. Pinch off any runners which form.
Seating: Don’t forget an all weather seat so you can sit and contemplate all your hard work over a cup of tea or a nip of something stronger. Teak from renewable resources is fantastic but cast iron or aluminium are also good, though you’ll need a cushion to protect your posterior on cold days! Position it in a sunny area. Buy a few flowering daffodils, tulips and pansies and plant them in a pretty pot next to the bench, then sit back and enjoy. Rachel Leverton
RARE OR UNUSUAL VEGETABLES FOR THE TABLE
Skirret Sium Sisarum Skirret originated from china and was once highly valued in Britain as a fine vegetable, but it is seldom grown nowadays. The edible part of the plant is the cluster of thin branched white roots, which have an excellent and distinctive flavour of carrots with parsley. This is reasonable as Skirret belongs to the carrot family. To grow successfully, sow the seed in a sunny site in deepish drills about eighteen inches apart. Later, thin the seedlings to nine inches apart. The vegetable should be ready to harvest in October, sometimes earlier in a good summer. Avoid leaving the roots too long in the ground as they will become woody and loose flavour. The roots should be thoroughly cleaned before cooking. An old recipe says that they should be cooked in a little milk or may be stewed, roasted or eaten raw in salad. Seed is mostly available from online heritage seed suppliers. Look at www.pennardplants.com or www.chilternseeds.co.uk

BOWLED OVER
Eastbourne Bowling Club at the Saffrons was featured on BBC TV’s South Today last summer, as newcomer Alex Dunne, aged 8, played with his parents against members in their 80s. Hundreds of Eastbourne residents, of all ages, tried bowling for the first time last year – and were amazed. Bowling (the indoor, mat variety) was on offer at local road shows and church fêtes. The gentle aesthetics, simplicity and yet skill required astonished many. The sport takes just seconds to learn but a lifetime of bowling to master. Whether it’s at Motcombe or Gildredge Park, in Victoria Drive, or behind the Town Hall at the Saffrons, the lawn bowls season will start again soon all around the town. Perceptions of this sport as being archaic and fusty are countered locally by a relaxed dress code, brightly coloured bowls, gender equality and the involvement of many young people. It is the foremost sport for all generations, genders and those with a wide range of differing disabling physical and mental conditions. Everyone is able to play together, literally on a level playing field, in a fun, highly sociable environment with the potential for high level competition. Lawn bowls offers considerable health benefits. It improves flexibility and mobility without causing excessive loading of the joints. That makes it an ideal recreational activity. With the government urging us all to be more active, there is no doubt that bowling helps sustain physical, emotional and mental health, particularly with the over 60s, helping to stave off major ill health, dementia and loneliness. It is highly sociable, inclusive and relatively inexpensive.
June/July issue deadline FRIDAY 8th May Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.
Folk who are visually or hearing impaired, have a physical disability, weight issues or challenges with mental health, are black or white, male or female and aged 8 to 88 can all be found playing alongside one another at Eastbourne Bowling Club, Saffrons Road, the oldest and largest club in the town. Last year nearly 50 new members were integrated, offered taster sessions, use of equipment, one-toone and small group coaching with ‘new to bowls’ membership of just £60. Some of these new bowlers were content to have gentle, non-competitive games; others played in friendly matches against visiting teams, and a number have gone on to play competitively, each loving the experiences and opportunities afforded to them. If you’ve seen bowling on television and wondered... If you’re curious to know more ... All local bowls clubs welcome newcomers and spectators. For more information go to www.eastbournebowlingclub.com, telephone 01323 724340 or visit 3, Saffrons Road, Eastbourne BN21 1DG. Do give lawn bowls a try this year. Greens open on Saturday 18th April. It will be a revelation to you and an experience that you may mean you are ‘bowled over!’ Photos l-r The Dunne Family – New Bowlers at Eastbourne Bowling Club; Newsreader and broadcaster Fred Dinenage with members of Eastbourne Bowling Club.

VOLUNTEERING FOR GIRLGUIDING
list goes on. Girlguiding provides a safe and fun environment in which girls can be girls.
We are very lucky in Old Town to have a strong Girlguiding presence with the 24th Eastbourne Rainbows for girls aged 5 to 7, the 24th and 10th Eastbourne Brownies for girls aged 7 to 10 and the newly opened 12th Eastbourne Guides for girls aged 10 to 14. There is also a Senior Section for young women aged 14 to 25.
All this would not be possible without a dedicated team of volunteers drawn from all backgrounds, faiths, cultures and abilities who give their time and experience to Girlguiding.
Each unit meets once a week during school term time, offering girls and young adults the opportunity to have fun, learn new skills, grow in confidence and participate in a wide range of activities. There are sleepovers, camps, badges, craft, cooking, adventurous activities, community projects, outings, challenges...the
We are actively looking for new adult volunteers. There are numerous roles available. We are flexible and volunteers have the freedom to give whatever time they are able to. Some volunteers give us a couple of hours here and there helping out with fundraising and events planning or even doing the annual accounts. Each unit has at least one Leader, who has completed the Girlguiding Leadership Qualification, who is usually assisted by an Assistant Leader and a unit helper. We are desperately short of Leaders to help with the running or our Old Town units and would like to hear from anyone who would be interested in volunteering. Some units are at risk of closure if more adult help is not found.
EVERY HOUR COUNTS
WE SUPPORT YOU
In return we offer support, specialised training and the opportunity to develop new skills, meet new people and have fun! Being a volunteer with Girlguiding is not only incredibly rewarding but also gives you access to a range of benefits such as free training and resources, as well as a fabulous members’ scheme offering you discounts on high street brands.
GOT WHAT IT TAKES?
So if you think you’ve got what it takes to make a real difference to our Girlguiding community and keep our thriving units open we would love to hear from you. Please go to the Girlguiding website and follow the link www.girlguiding.org.uk/get_involved/volunteer.aspx or call Lynette Benton on 01323 768252. You won’t be disappointed!

Eastbourne mum taking on midnight walk to raise funds for ‘amazing’ hospice Stacey Yeend has spoken about the care her family receives from Chestnut Tree in the hope that it will encourage more people to support this vital local charity by signing up to their Night to Remember midnight walk. Stacey’s 14-year-old daughter Aimee has Rhetts syndrome, a degenerative neurological disorder that means she needs 24-hour care. “Aimee is doing really well,” says Stacey, “but she has her limitations. She can still walk, although she needs a wheelchair if we are going any distance, and she can still swallow but she needs to have her food mashed up for her. She also can’t communicate, her dad and I just know what she wants.” The family, who live in Eastbourne, were introduced to Chestnut Tree about 6 years ago, although Stacey was reluctant to visit the hospice at first: “I was terrified when our social worker started talking about a hospice. I thought I knew what a hospice was and I wasn’t ready to take my little girl to one. But when we got there we felt immediately comfortable. It’s just like a big home and Aimee loved it.” Since then Aimee has been a regular visitor, initially staying at the hospice with the whole family and now visiting on her own. “It was really hard to hand over care of Aimee to someone else – up until then there had been nobody else who could look after her – but we got to know everyone and now feel confident leaving her there.” The family also receive care in their own home, with regular visits from a Chestnut Tree Community Nurse. “Kirstie, our community nurse, is amazing. She takes Aimee out for a few hours to do something fun whilst we take a break,” Says Stacey. Stacey describes the care that the hospice offers as ‘life-saving’. “We wouldn’t be without it and Aimee absolutely adores the time she spends at the house and with Kirstie. I just wish we had known about it sooner so that we could have made the most of spending time with our other children. Our eldest, J-J (16), missed out on so much growing up because we just couldn’t do the
10
things that he wanted to do when we had Aimee with us. Simple things like eating in restaurants, going to the beach, visiting the cinema or going on a caravan holiday. Chestnut Tree allows us to do this so that the youngest two, Gracie (8) and Poppy (9 months), don’t miss out.” Chestnut Tree is funded almost entirely through fundraising, with less than 8% of its funding coming from central government. The charity is currently caring for 55 children in East Sussex, but there are more children who need their care. “We now have 2 nurses and a Care Support Worker based at our Eastbourne Office, which means we can reach more families in East Sussex,” says Director of Children’s Services, Linda Perry, “but our overall aim is to double the number of children we are caring for here. The Night to Remember midnight walk is a great way for women to get involved and help to raise the vital funds we need to bring more services to East Sussex, and ultimately help more children.” This year Stacey will be taking on the 10-mile walk for the fifth time, and asking others to join her in what she describes as an amazing, fulfilling experience. “The night is always fantastic. The atmosphere is great, it’s well organised and it’s such a good feeling when you finish. It sounds like a long way but you really don’t notice it, the time goes really quickly and before you know it you’re nearly finished. I really would say to anybody ‘just do it’. Even if you raise £5 it will make such a difference to families like ours.” The walk will take place at midnight on Saturday 16th May 2015 around the streets and seafront of Eastbourne with a choice of 4-mile and 10-mile routes. Entry is open to women aged 16 and over, and includes a fundraising pack, an exclusive t-shirt, torch and medal as well as refreshments en route and breakfast on return. Registration closes on Monday 4th May 2015 and there is a discounted early-bird entry fee of £15 for those registering before Sunday 15th March.

Medlar, mulberry, loquat and fig mixed with Neptune, bowling and a loop hole… Leaving aside the flint dovecote, the source of the Bourne stream and a duck pond, where else in our community could you find quite so unusual a mix of features manmade and horticultural in so small a space?
Throughout the last century children have enjoyed all sorts of mischief around the pond. Lifelong Motcombe resident, and Keeper of the (bowling) Green, Derek Box remembers successfully fishing for carp using line and cigarette butt – only to be foiled by the arrival of a bobby at the critical moment. Since then the carp have progressed to ‘greater waters’ in Hydneye Lake, including a 12-15lb pike which regularly attacked the ducks. Other recollections of Derek include sightings of the Star Brewery dray horse ‘Duke’, stabled in the farm buildings now forming the Old Mews. These simple delights combined with the Motcombe Baths kept generations of children happy.
Oasis of Community Fun
Motcombe gardens, formerly the Manor House farmyard with a very large pond, was given to the town of Eastbourne by the 9th Duke of Devonshire in 1909. It is thought that like so many other downland villages, the anglo-saxon villagers of Burne chose their settlement site because of the source of the stream or burne from which the name Eastbourne evolved. Water was drawn from the pond – considered of drinking quality – until well into the 19th century. Records indicate that a pig farmer was
Today busy bees storm up and down the banks enjoying the sloping paths and their puddles. Grassy banks, ducks and picnic tables provide a refreshing alternative to primary colour plastic playgrounds. An opportunity to let off steam, feed the ducks (seed hopefully, not bread) and enjoy the squabbling seagulls. And the bowling green… not a creaking joint to be heard, as the pace of several lanes quickens in fierce competition between Motcombe Gardens Bowling Club and a visiting club. Spectating the excitement from a park bench does not guarantee solitude, as an invitation to join the club is highly likely across the fence… Neptune gazing unaffected on this scene forms the subject of many a happy photographer or artist. His tranquility will be broken, however, on Easter Saturday 4th April, as a melting-pot of community organisations join Friends of Motcombe Gardens (Facebook) in organising a Children’s Easter Egg Hunt. Children and wellingtons welcome at 11am for some free community fun! Contact Cllr Carolyn Heaps, Chair of Friends of Motcombe Gardens, for further information: 07845 168270 Oh, and that ‘Loop Hole’ in one of the bowling green walls? It’s thought this was originally used to shoot wild ducks on or over the pond….

Robotic surgery has come to Eastbourne! The Friends of the Eastbourne Hospitals have taken delivery of a “Da Vinci Robot” which will be used by the Surgeons at Eastbourne District General Hospital to take laparoscopic (key hole) surgery to the most advanced level of sophistication currently possible. Its principle use will be for patients with prostate cancer requiring major surgery, but patients with other pelvic and colorectal cancers may also be helped in the future. Guided by the surgeon, the “robot” provides a greater degree of accuracy and precision and at the same time is much less tiring for the surgeon – both physically and mentally. The outcomes for patients will be much improved and it will allow shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times and better cancer outcomes. This equipment would usually cost in excess of £2 million but The Friends have secured it at just over £1 million pounds, and it would normally take several years to raise the funds to that amount. The Friends, however, felt that this was too long to wait, and have agreed a generous lease-purchase scheme with CHGMeridian, which enabled them to take immediate delivery. The first operation took place in the week beginning Monday 9th February and we are well into double figures now. So far all patients left hospital the following day instead of at least a 3-day stay as before. Dr Peter Nash, Chairman of the Friends said, “This was too good an opportunity to miss. Whilst this is probably the most daunting and challenging task undertaken by the Charity, the benefits will be widely felt within the community. It is exceedingly good news for future patients of the EDGH who will benefit from minimally
invasive surgery with less pain and much quicker recovery times. It is good news for the surgeons who will be able to perform at the highest level with considerably less strain. And it is good news for the Hospital. This will be a major step in creating a Centre of Excellence in Eastbourne for such procedures and attract patients from the whole of the County and parts of neighbouring Counties. It will demonstrate that the future of the EDGH as an important hospital is secured for the foreseeable future. “The Eastbourne Community has been very generous in supporting all of the Friends’ projects in the past and I hope they will continue to so to enable us to complete the purchase in the shortest time possible.” Steve Garnett, Consultant Urologist said, “The urology dept is very excited by this exceptional donation from the FoEH. This brings to the EDGH cutting-edge surgical technology which is a fantastic development for patients from Eastbourne & beyond and puts the EDGH among the top hospitals in the UK. It is an amazingly generous donation by the FoEH & a real vote of confidence in the future of the EDGH.” Darren Grayson – Chief Executive East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust said, “On behalf of the Trust I would like thank the Friends of Eastbourne Hospital for their tremendous generosity, which is fantastic news for local patients and the hospital. This new technology will help boost the profile of the hospital and compliments our continued programme of development and investment in Eastbourne DGH.” Raising the £1 million to cover the cost of the Robot is our mission for 2015 and we are hoping that the generosity of the people of Eastbourne will continue to enable us to complete the purchase in the shortest time possible. We have a number of fundraising events planned through the year for the Robot Fund and we will be very happy to support in any way we can, anybody who would like to help us raise the money. You could also become a member and we will be happy to talk to you about that if you are interested. We can be reached on 01323 438236 or email esh-tr.friendsdgh@nhs.net

BRINGING BACK THE BUCKS! More than thirty years after they stormed charts across the globe with a string of hits, Cheryl, Mike and Jay are once again set to tour the world with a 70-date World Tour to remind everyone that there is more to Cheryl, Mike & Jay formerly of Bucks Fizz than Making Your Mind Up! The band’s original line-up was classic Eurovison, two boys, two girls – a formula established by ABBA, to whom Bucks Fizz were inevitably compared. Having performed together since 2009 when “girl next door” Cheryl Baker and “cheeky pin-up boy” Mike Nolan reunited with “The Raunchy One” Jay Aston, the trio are being joined for their Paradise Regained Tour by a fourth vocalist - coincidentally called Bobby. The fourth member of 1981’s Eurovision winning line-up was Bobby G. Cheryl says, “Having performed several gigs with our friend Stephen Fox, Mike, Jay and I realised that people expect to see four on stage when they see Fizz, so we are delighted to introduce Bobby McVay as our guest singer for the tour.” She explains that Bobby and Fizz go back a long way. He was one third of 1983’s UK entry to Eurovision, Sweet Dreams. In fact he was invited to join them a few years ago, but he was unable to commit to joining them at that time. “I feel he will be a real asset to the band,” she adds. Bandmate Jay agrees, “As a four piece, the songs will be heard as they were intended to be heard, with four voices rather than three and the dance routines will have the full effect again.” She adds, “We are really looking forward to being on the road again. Performing in a theatre gives us the chance to produce a show we can be proud of, and we truly hope our audiences enjoy hearing the hits once more, together with a few of our lesser known album tracks.” With an album of new studio material and single releases in the pipeline, the future is looking extremely bright for Cheryl, Mike & Jay formerly of Bucks Fizz. The prospects are bubbling over as Cheryl excitedly declares, “New representation, new tour, new singer, new merchandise, maybe a new album...A new beginning! Whoop whoop!”
24
Like a good champagne, their performances have matured, and they still manage to hold all the fun, vitality and passion for performance of the record breaking tours of the 1980s. Recent appearances at the nostalgia festivals, Here and Now, Rewind and forthcoming Let’s Rock have reminded the Great British public of the power of the Fizz, as every person in the crowd finds themselves singing along and dancing to hits they thought they had forgotten, and with a rapidly growing following on social media they decided it was time to tour again. Originally put together as the perfect winning act, Bucks Fizz went far beyond their original Eurovision remit and as one of the biggest selling bands of the ’80s, became a global phenomenon. Making Your Mind Up became a number One hit across the world, selling more than four million copies... The legendary skirt-ripping routine propelled them to overnight success, charting at No.1 in many countries beyond the UK with countries like Japan, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia falling to Bucks Fizz’s charms. Paradise Regained will be their most comprehensive tour since the ’80s, with more than 70 dates in the UK, Ireland, Europe and beyond... including Australia, where in spite of not being part of Eurovision territory, Bucks Fizz had a massive following. It will be the first time the band have performed there since 1986. Saturday 18th April, Eastbourne Hippodrome Theatre Box Office Tel: 01323 412000 www.royalhippodrome.com/shows/details/2/70.html

how we lived then As children in the 1950s, Jan and Graham Upton were both avid collectors and each had bedrooms filled with the things now seen in their museum. In 1968 they got married and combined their collections and efforts to acquire even more. Two people together are much more effective and soon these things were taking over their house. The original idea came from friends who commented: “Your home looks more like a museum, you really ought to open one.” They tried to do just that in 1978 but sadly couldn’t get planning permission for the property in mind. Meanwhile, their two children came along so the museum opening was postponed, but the collecting went on and on…
As all the intended exhibits were stored, the roof became filled, followed by the garden shed, their children’s Wendy house and the garage. When Graham started on the bedroom, Jan cried: “Enough is enough, it’s time we started looking for a suitable premises!” After a very difficult search, they eventually found the building they have now, a town-centre Regency terraced house. Following almost a year of very hard work and many problems, they opened on1st May 1988. The ceremony was performed by our then local Member of Parliament, Ian Gow, who brought along his friends, Enoch Powell and his wife. They now have a unique museum on four floors of old shops, authentic room-settings and many varied displays. After 27 years of welcoming thousands of visitors from all over the country and in fact from all over the world, Graham and Jan have rather sadly decided to sell up and retire. The general public are often amazed at the quantity and diversity of exhibits, which now number about 100,000. Some of the old shops you can see are the Grocers, Chemists, Sweet Shop, Ironmongers, Toy Shop, Post Office, Drapers, Boot Repairers and Photographers. The room-settings include an Edwardian Kitchen, The Admiral Lord Nelson’s Inn and the Wartime Kitchen/ Living room, including an under-the stairs air raid shelter. There are in addition displays of Christmas Past, Jewellery, Wedding Dresses, Royalty, Spring-cleaning, Sports and many, many more… The museum has recently been featured on BBC’s “The Antiques Road Trip” and “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” when Graham had to buy a baby’s plate from the presenter Mark Stacey. Many visitors comment on these programmes when they arrive. Also welcomed are numerous school and student groups, together with their Teachers and there are worksheets for the children to complete as they go round. At the front of the building is a well-stocked gift shop and Jan works very hard at keeping this full of unusual and traditional gifts and souvenirs. As well as the visitors, locals can pop in and use the shop at any time. For further information on the sale of this exceptional business please contact Emma Watkins, at Watkins Commercial on 01273 709090 or email: emma@watkinscom.co.uk.

Richard Billingham – Panoramic
painters, from the 19th century to the present, John Constable to David Hockney. They explore rhythm, pattern, repetition and dynamic composition, as well as the tableaux in nature and often record a transformative moment in the landscape.
Towner is delighted to present a major exhibition by English artist and photographer, Richard Billingham, showing together for the first time his panoramic photographs and video work from 2002 to 2014.
Richard Billingham is best known for his 1996 photobook Ray’s A Laugh, which documents the life of his alcoholic father, Ray, and mother, Liz, and brother, Jason. In 2001, he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize for his solo show at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham. He holds professorships at the University of Gloucestershire and Middlesex University.
25th April – 28th June 2015
Capturing the British countryside, from the South Downs to the Norfolk Fen and Constable Country of East of England, these immersive works explore the rich textures of these landscapes. Billingham’s panoramic views unearth the particular geology, vegetation, changing weather and light of these places, some of which he visited over a period of years. The collected works in Panoramic have a visceral aesthetic, revealing Billingham’s emotional and creative relationship to nature and landscape, drawing on his background and sensibilities as a painter. The works reference the pictorial rhetoric of British landscape
34
Towner will also be showing Billingham’s 2012 film work Sweep, which portrays trees moving in wind, commissioned by ArtSway. The exhibition has been supported by Middlesex University and University of Gloucestershire. Richard Billingham’s Panoramic, 25th April – 28th June 2015, Towner, Devonshire Park, College Road, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ, free entry. Open Tuesday - Sunday, and Bank Holiday Mondays, 10am - 5pm.
