April & May 2016 – Issue 39

Hello...

...and welcome to the April and May issue of the Eastbourne Old Town Crier, your community magazine, business directory and what’s on guide. With Easter falling in March this year, there are still a few notable dates in April and May – St George’s Day on 23rd April and on the same day this year, we celebrate 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare. There are two bank holiday Mondays in May, on the 2nd and on the 30th. In this issue we have news from the Gilbert and Sullivan Society on page 28 and the Archway Choirs on page 4. There’s health and wellbeing from Lushington Chiropractic Clinic on page 13 and Arlington Road Pharmacy on page 22, plus gardening tips on page 15. The days are drawing out and summer is just around the corner, so sit back, relax and enjoy your April and May issue. Fran Tegg, Editor

Archway Choirs Sing for Chestnut Tree House Charity ‘Love Can Build a Bridge’ is the title of a new concert being organised by Archway Choirs in collaboration with The Chestnut Tree Charity, which will take place at The Royal Hippodrome Theatre in Eastbourne on 15th May 2016. This exciting event has been conceived by Archway Choirs Director Jane Reeves (left) who wants to raise the profile of this children’s charity locally and to help raise funds for such a worthwhile cause. Chestnut Tree House is a children’s hospice for East and West Sussex caring for 300 children and young adults who suffer

SWIMMING LESSONS Babies & Children at St Andrews Pool, Eastbourne

Archway Choirs are thriving community choirs based in Seaford and Eastbourne, and have been running successfully for the last six years, boasting some 250 active members under the direction and creative guidance of Jane Reeves. The choirs consist of two main groups, Contemporary and Gospel, which cover a wide range of music from popular choral songs such as ‘Lacrimosa’ by Mozart, to modern day hits such as ‘Skyfall’ by Adele. The choirs are well known locally, performing concerts in Eastbourne and Seaford, and as well as performing for charity events they have also performed professionally at local theatres in Brighton with the West End cast of Godspell, at the Eastbourne Hippodrome with pop group Blake and also performed at the renowned Congress Theatre with Richard & Adam. More recently the choirs have appeared on BBC radio with Jane's own arrangements of Christmas songs, as well as recording parts for various TV adverts.

The ‘Love Can Build a Bridge’ concert marks a significant milestone for the Archway Choir. In 2016 Archway launched its vision for the future – building on the success of the last six years and embarking on new ambitions. The Archway wants to retain the fundamental values that have so successfully underpinned the choirs, but also to continue improving the standard of performance. In short, the Archway wants to be inclusive and ambitious. The concert will be a manifestation of this vision.

Sussex Downs College teams up with Albion in the Community to make sport inclusive for all, with sessions for Adults with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities.

Training for all levels - beginner to black belt! Adult Karate Junior Karate

Sport is accessible for all, thanks to a new initiative between Sussex Downs College and Albion in the Community, the charitable arm of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club (BHAFC). The College pitched to receive funding for the project back in November 2015. They were successful and received initial funding through Sportivate, a Lottery funded project from Sport England. Every Monday, the Sports Hall at Sussex Downs College, Eastbourne, opens its doors to Adults with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (ALDD), with sessions led by a coach from Albion in the Community. ‘We are thrilled to work with Albion in the Community on this project,” says Nicola Taylor, who is the Sports Maker at Sussex Downs College. ‘These adults wouldn’t have access to a structured sports session without these classes. It’s wonderful to see everyone enjoying being active.’

The 16-week programme has proven so successful, it is now being continued for the rest of the academic year. Students from Oak House and Hazel Court School’s FE Department participate in weekly sports activities, including basketball and tennis. The programme also works with other areas of the College, making it beneficial to all involved: students studying the Higher Sports Level Award (HSLA) and Health & Social Care students assist the coach from Albion in the Community, completing their own coursework in the process. Hayley Templeman, Disability Officer from Albion in the Community, comments: ‘It is great that we have developed this partnership with Sussex Downs College. It is beneficial for all the learners involved as they now have an opportunity every week to play structured sport and do some exercise which is fabulous for the mind and the body. We are able to differentiate activities by changing the equipment or the task for the learners to suit their needs. We also have football clubs that run at weekends which means we are able to let the players know about other sporting opportunities within their area for when they are not at college.’

Local family feature in charity film Chestnut Tree children’s hospice has recently launched a film featuring a family from Lewes. The film aims to raise awareness of the charity, and the care that they can provide in children’s own homes across the whole of East Sussex. The Lundin family have been cared for by the charity since 2011, when they were seeking respite care for their youngest child. Dad Jason explains, ‘Eva was born 13 weeks early, not breathing, and spent the first 108 days of her life in hospital. She was tiny but she fought hard. She is now almost six years old and is a loving girl with Cerebral Palsy and chronic lung disease. She has come a long way since those early days, but she is still highly dependent on me and her mum for all of her needs. She cannot walk unaided, her weak chest means she is often dependent on oxygen, she is fed by a tube and she cannot speak to us. Of course, she communicates in her own way, and has even learnt a few signs, but caring for her is still hugely demanding.’ Jason gave up work to become Eva’s full time carer in 2011. ‘It’s definitely a lot harder doing the caring,’ says Jason. ‘As with any child, it’s all about getting into good routines, and luckily I have a highly-organised wife who takes care of that, but those routines are different when you are caring for a child with complex needs such as Eva. Seemingly simple tasks like doing the weekly shop or running errands were totally impossible without help.’ The family access a range of services at Chestnut Tree. A nurse visits regularly to take care of Eva whilst Jason and Mel spend some quality time together. ‘It’s wonderful’ Jason says. ‘To start with, the visits from the Chestnut Tree Nurse gave us time to get everyday tasks done, but now we use it as precious time for Mel and

8

I to spend as a couple, which is really invaluable. We’ve even managed to go to the cinema! That may sound bizarre, but it’s something we simply hadn’t been able to do since Eva was born.’ It’s also given Eva’s brother, George, the chance to spend time with his parents. ‘It is inevitable that you end up spending the majority of your time looking after the more dependent child,’ Jason explains, ‘so during the school holidays I try to use our Chestnut Tree Nurse visits to spend some time with George, doing the kinds of things that aren’t that easy with Eva. ‘Chestnut Tree does a wonderful job, offering so many great services to so many families across Sussex. Eva has built a really strong relationship with Louise, our community nurse, and we know that the team can handle any situation that arises whilst she’s in their care.’ As for Eva, her future is looking bright. ‘She’s just strong enough to get into the kitchen cupboards now so it looks like we’re going to have to child-proof everything again. And she has her powered wheelchair now, so there really will be no stopping her!’ Chestnut Tree cares for 300 children and their families across Sussex and never charges for its care. It costs well over £3.5 million every year to offer these services and less than 7% of its funding comes from central government, meaning it relies heavily on the generosity of the local community. ‘We are so proud of Eva and George and will treasure this film forever. Please, please tell as many people as you can about it – like, share, tweet, retweet, comment – and help Chestnut Tree reach more children and families like us that need them. Thank you so much!’

igging is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets. I sprinkle them round shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will vary, but generally it’s about three handfuls to the square metre. It’s magical stuff when lightly forked in. It gives the plants a boost and builds up the levels of beneficial soil bacteria.

PRIMROSE

The Primula Vulgaris better known as the Primrose is native to several parts of the world from Western and Southern Europe, to Africa, Turkey and Iran and is one of the earliest spring flowers to show itself. This pretty little flower if left alone will cover the ground in open woods, and shaded hedgerows, motorway verges and railway embankments can also have displays. In the UK it is illegal to pick or dig up primroses from the wild due to risk of damage to the species. Primroses are available to buy as seeds or young plants and will grow best in moist but well drained soil in light shade. At the end of their flowering season they can be dug up, split into smaller plants and put elsewhere in the garden where they will settle and prepare their lovely yellow flowers ready for the next year. Sylvia Reeve

How to Plant a container-grown shrub

Soak the compost for an hour before planting. Make sure the rootball of the shrub is sufficiently moist. Check the shrub is suitable for the site. Dig a hole that is larger than the rootball. Work well-rotted gardencompost or planting mixture into the bottom of the hole and mix it with the soil you removed when you dug the hole. Plant the shrub so that the top of the rootball is just fractionally below the finished soil level. Firm the earth around with your boot. Water the plant in and spread an organic mulch on top. Rachael Leverton to d

o

Now is the time I dig up my overcrowded border plants and split them into smaller clumps. These can be used to plug the gaps elsewhere in my garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs! Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry. I spread a good 3 inch/8cm layer of mulch around my border, between the plants. Choose from well-rotted manure or garden compost, chipped bark

or cocoa shells. This seals in moisture and keeps the weeds down, essential at this time of year when they start growing like...well...weeds! If you haven’t already done so give your roses a prune, taking care to remove any dead or diseased stems completely.

Spring Has Sprung!

JOBS TO DO IN APRIL & MAY

April is a good month to sow sunflower seeds. Choose a sunny, open spot outdoors. Rake the soil to a fine tilth and sow the seeds about 1/2 inch deep & 2 inches apart. Water in well and blooms will be ready to display in one of the flower classes at the Show in August. Sow some herbs – mint, rosemary and chives will tolerate outside temperatures whereas basil, dill and coriander prefer some heat to get started. Deadhead spring bulbs and allow the leaves to die down naturally – they will then bloom even better next year. Young vegetable plants need regular potting on – this helps produce bigger root systems. If white roots are seen on the outside of the compost when the pot is slipped off, a larger pot is required.

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a whole property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality Today

The care Act 2014 introduced in April 2015 allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care under the new charges and assessment of resources regulations. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all currently averaging around £1,000 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for after any relevant income was taken into account.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e. from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two property Trusts either immediately or within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, protect the integrity of your home should you ever require care in the future, so long as avoiding care fees was not a primary motivating reason behind the implementation fo the strategy - i.e. you should be looking to protect your half of your property should your spouse remarry after your death, or you should be looking to ensure that your children would not lose 50% of their inheritance should they be made bankrupt or divorce or for example you should be looking to prevent a generational inheritance tax burden in the future. These are all sound reasons for implementing this strategy which in themselves are not deliberate deprivation of assets, but the implemantation of which protects the integrity of the property. For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey your property into it which will produce the same result again this must be well in advance of any care considerations and the motivation must not solely be for the purpose of preventing your home being used to fund your care.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. With our Post death Property Protection Package when the first partner dies, they leave their half into their Trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the Primary Beneficiary which means that as they own half and are Trustee of the other half they have complete control over the property and what happens to it. The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as ultimate Trust Beneficiaries will have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy and because it is not possible to sell just the survivor’s half of the property, the integrity of the property is protected. While the ‘’market value” of half a property is negligible, The Care Act 2014 guidelines do allow for this half to have a charge placed on it under a deferred payment arrangement for care fees which is why this package includes a Lasting Power of Attorney grant for Property and Financial affairs which will enable a preappointed Attorney to act on behalf of the survivor should they be unable to themselves and negotiate with the Local Authority for the property to be rented out and a percentage of the income given to the Local Authority instead of a charge being placed. The second half of the property would then ultimately go into the Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. With our Whole of Life and Post Death Complete Property and Family Protection Package both halves of the property are conveyed into Trust IMMEDIATELY. This means the whole property is protected straight away and not just after the first party dies. The benefits of this package are that it then protects the property even if both parties go into care before the death of either. It also means that if the survivor goes into care the property does not have to be rented but if it is 100% of the income goes directly into the Trusts for the benefit of the survivor or any of the other Trust Beneficiaries and does not have to be given to the Local Authority. The most important benefit of this package though is the property can be sold at any time and the resulting proceeds be fully protected for the whole family within the Trusts and no negotiation with the Local Authority is required. Sole owners and couples who have immediately conveyed their properties into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and not solely for the purpose of preventing their home being used to fund their care (deliberate deprivation of assets) secures the integrity of the property (so long as entry into care is not within 6 months of setting up the strategy) as the property is not absolutely owned by an individual anymore and it is not legal to force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust Beneficiaries. eastbourne an Alphabet: A Journey in Print A brand new book taking the reader on an intriguing and unexpected journey through Eastbourne. The illustrator and author, Clare Dales, has a background in architecture and printmaking, and has been exhibiting and selling her work for the last 14 years. Sussex born, the links to the deeply embedded histories within our collective narrative are visible in her work. A member of the Lewes Printmakers and regular contributor to Open Houses, Clare wanted to express the palimpsest of forms that contribute to sense of place. In her book, Eastbourne An Alphabet, Clare represents an interesting mix of references. From the Neolithic period, when 6,000 years ago, the first farmers began to shape the characteristic landscape of the Downland., to architectural aspects including the bandstand, and Pier, and images of the natural world. n Hoover Repair and Service n Tiling n Decorating n Kitchen Fitting n Bathrooms n Emergency Call Outs NLG Electrical 28 Kingsmead Walk Seaford East Sussex BN25 2EX Tel: 01323 301062 Mobile: 07941 852999

“I wanted to show Eastbourne as the diverse place it is. At the very edge of England, and with strong connections to the sea and agriculture. Often Eastbourne is thought of as a Victorian Town, with little mention of what was here before, and how that has shaped our environment. The town has had its peaks and troughs of fortune, like many towns, and it is this layering that makes the town what it is – diverse and with many hidden treasures to be found. I hope that the reader will find the familiar, perhaps see something anew and find something that is a total surprise”. Eastbourne Alphabet is available via booksellers and online. H.M.S. Pinafore

or: The Lass that Loved a Sailor “Love levels all ranks” – but can it really cross strict social boundaries? High-born Josephine is in love with Ralph, a lowly sailor on board her father’s ship. Will she declare it or follow her father’s wishes and marry his chosen match, the pompous but well-meaning Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty? If they elope, will anyone spill the beans? What does the mysterious Miss Buttercup know – and what will she reveal?

DEVONSHIRE PARK THEATRE EASTBOURNE

Can the Captain run a tight ship without ever (or hardly ever) using strong language?

TUESDAY 3rd - SATURDAY 7th MAY

True to form, Gilbert pokes fun at patriotism, party politics, the Royal Navy and the rise of the unqualified to positions of authority. H.M.S. Pinafore is one of the most popular and well-known of the G&S musicals, bubbling with Gilbert’s wit, still sharp as ever, and brimming with some of Sullivan’s most memorable music.

(No performance on Wednesday evening)

We are especially delighted to be sharing your evening with our friends from Southern Youth Ballet, who will perform an excerpt from Pineapple Poll. So if you enjoy music, dance or comedy, this is an evening’s entertainment for you.
