August and September 2017– Issue 47
Hello...
...and welcome to the August and September issue of the Eastbourne Old Town Crier. Haven’t we been lucky with the summer weather so far this year? Let’s hope the sunshine continues throughout the school holidays! Once again it’s time for Airbourne which this year is on from 17th to 20th August. And tying in with the air show is a screening of Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines at the Redoubt Fortress and Military Museum on Friday 18th August. If you haven’t had enough tennis this year then there are championships on at Devonshire Park throughout August – see the What’s On pages, 27 to 35. It’s the Summer Family Fun Day at Eastbourne Sports Park on Saturday 26th August, the Friendship Picnic in Gidredge Park on the 28th whilst the bank holiday weekend also brings us the Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club’s Regatta and Classic Car Show at the Harbour Quay. If that’s not enough, the Shinewater Funday is on Saturday 2nd September – a great day out for all the family to enjoy, just before the kids go back to school! Happy holidays!

Health in Mind at Community Wise The autumnal equinox, is on September 22nd, when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is approximately equal. By the autumn equinox, the day is four and a half hours shorter than 21st June, the longest day of the year. This can be important for some individuals who experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Their symptoms often begin as the days start getting shorter. According to an NHS website, the theory is that lack of sunlight can affect the production of melatonin and serotonin and the body’s circadian rhythm – the body’s internal clock. Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience mental health problems at some point, and 1 in 6 adults report experiencing a common mental health problem (like anxiety or depression) at any one time. In addition, 10 percent of children and young people under the age of 16 are affected. Community Wise in Ocklynge road is the venue for two regular Health in Mind groups and for a Child and Adolescent Mental Health clinic run by NHS services. According to MIND, the overall number of people with mental health problems has not changed significantly in recent years, but worries about things like money, jobs and benefits can make it harder for people to cope. The highest rate of depression is amongst 25-44 year old women, and is likely to include women with postnatal depression or feelings of social isolation following the birth of a baby. Increasing age is also an important risk factor; older people may feel socially isolated or experience financial or health problems, and perhaps loss and bereavement. If affected, there are steps you can take: 1. Get support. Make an appointment with your GP to discuss any mental health concerns. And get help too from organisations such as MIND, Age UK, or Mental Health Foundation. In addition, there is a listening ear at Community Wise. There are chaplains available on Thursday mornings from 10am, Wednesdays after 4pm, and on Friday mornings.
4
2. Get connected. It is worthwhile to take small steps to feel connected to the world. Our free IT drop in clinics on Thursdays at Community Wise will explain how to keep safe on line and wise use of social media. Gather, the Friday pop-up café at Community Wise, is also great venue for meeting friends and people who will become friends. And there is growing evidence that belonging to a group that sings can have positive impact on a range of physical and psychological conditions; this activity is thought to lower stress levels and blood pressure and reduce psychological distress. There are lots of opportunities for singing at Community Wise including sung worship on Sundays at Living Stones Community Church, and the Archway choir who meet at Community Wise on Tuesday nights. 3. Get involved. Activities such as volunteering not only help improve mood by doing something good, but also reduce social isolation. Social networks and friendships have an impact on reducing the risk of death and developing certain diseases, and help individuals to recover when they do fall ill. Community Wise is very grateful for the volunteers who help make things happen. 4. Get moving. Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active, but exercise can boost your mood if you have depression. Community Wise hosts Mummy and Me – an exercise group for mums and young children, and Rethink Fitness – for adults including those with health issues. Pilates, Scottish Country Dancing and Swing Jive groups are at Community Wise too. These are all good opportunities to get fit and make friends in a healthy environment. As we enjoy the dog days of summer in August and September, make plans now for a healthy and happy autumn ahead.

Eden Blue Centre for Health, Wellbeing, Music and Arts Eden Blue Centre for Health, Wellbeing, Music and Arts has gone from strength to strength since it opened its doors in Old Town in February 2016. The centre now offers around 30 classes a week such as Yoga, Tai Chi, African Drumming (photo above), Pilates (photo top right),Choir, Folk Dancing, Zumba & Spanish. The classes are led by an enthusiastic and passionate team of teachers. Eden Blue also runs specialist workshops and events, and holds two major performances each year. In June, the Eden Blue Summer Show brought together the choir and musicians for an exciting and uplifting performance. As
one of the audience members said, “It was absolutely brilliant! I couldn’t stop smiling. The performers were so talented and the atmosphere was great. I quite enjoyed the cakes too!” As a family-owned Community Interest Company, Eden Blue has a strong community focus, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy a wealth of activities in a friendly, inclusive and welcoming environment. Celine and Emmanuel, the centre owners, believe in making everyone feel welcome. “We love Old Town, but we felt that something was missing. Eden Blue provides a precious few hours each week where people can do something rewarding, whether it is singing in a choir or taking a relaxing yoga class. Many people have made new friends and we see everyone as extended members of our family. We feel really proud to be part of such a wonderful local community.” Eileen, who attends Zumba and Pilates classes at the centre said, “Eden Blue is very friendly, relaxed and fun! It is a lovely centre. There is a great atmosphere with the option to have a coffee and a chat afterwards. Thoroughly recommend!” With so much choice, many people attend more than one class a week at Eden Blue. Su, who attends classes in Spanish, Choir and African Drumming, said, “Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. We love coming to Eden Blue.” The centre has a café/ relaxation area which sells refreshments, including tea, coffee, cold drinks and snacks. Celine and Emmanuel are bursting with ideas and have many exciting plans for the future. In the autumn, they will be holding film screenings and have plans to start a monthly book club. Eden Blue is holding an Open Day on Saturday 2nd September, giving you an opportunity to find out more about Eden Blue and to try the classes for FREE. The free taster classes include Yoga, Pilates, Folk Dancing, Ukulele, Choir, Drumming, Zumba, Belly Dancing and more! To book a place or find out more, contact Celine or Emmanuel at Eden Blue.

A view from the Potting Shed Honeysuckle
I know Wisteria is considered the king of climbers by many gardeners, but surely honeysuckle must be the crown prince. The fragrance is nothing short of heavenly. It grows wild in a wood near my home and the scent stops walkers in their tracks whenever they come across it. Honeysuckle stems emerge from the ground and grow slowly upwards until they find something around which to twine. At this point they romp away, scrambling up frameworks or trees, decorating them with spidery flowers and showering the air with that heady scent on warm summer evenings. The most common complaint I get about honeysuckle is ‘failure to thrive’. People buy one, plant it and it struggles on for a couple of years before it turns up it’s toes and keels over. ‘Why did that happen?’ they ask imploringly.

Mostly it happens because although they are undemanding once established, honeysuckles are quite fussy about their situation. Honeysuckle prefers its roots in damp soil, not too heavy, and enriched with plenty of leaf mould. This makes perfect sense if you think about the forest floor where it grows wild. And it likes its head in the sun to encourage prolific flowering. I grow it like clematis – I place a couple of bits of paving over the soil that surrounds the roots to cover the cool shade they require. Honeysuckle is not at all fussy about the support it needs. I have some growing over a pergola, and some over a wigwam in a border near a bench, just so I can get the benefit of the scent when I sit there. I’m trying to establish one over the porch too. As it’s against a wall I am having to make sure that it receives enough water. My father had one growing over an old tree in his garden. If you want to do the same I’d advise planting it near the extremity of the branch canopy rather than near the trunk where root – competition will be fierce. Train the stems upwards along some garden twine into the branches and the result will be breathtaking. There are lots of varieties to choose from. Our native honeysuckle, Lonicera periclymenum has early- and lateflowering varieties, and for scent they are difficult to beat. I do have a lovely Italian honeysuckle, Lonicera caprifolium, which was recommended to me by Alan Titchmarsh at a Gardeners World event many years ago. I wanted summer fragrance and I have not been disappointed with the great Mr. T’s suggestion. Now is actually a good time to buy a honeysuckle as you can conduct a scent test at the garden centre. Happy sniffing! Rachael Leverton

Eastbourne Choral Society: a healthy choir Choral singing has long been recognised as an activity which promotes participants’ sense of well-being, and this has been borne out by research linking singing’s effects in reducing stress hormones, with specific benefits to the body’s immune system. Locally, Eastbourne Choral Society continues to be at the forefront of music-making, with regular concerts, ‘sing and discover’ workshop days, and social events for members. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings in term time at Gildredge House School from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The choir prides itself on its friendliness, and while its membership is very healthy, new members are always welcome in all voice parts, with places currently available in the soprano and bass sections in particular. The new term will start on Tuesday 12th September, with rehearsals for Haydn’s The Seasons, which is also the subject of a workshop day on Saturday 30th September (see below and What’s On listings pages 27 to 35). More details about the choir and its current programme can be found at www.eastbournechoralsociety.org.uk.

Human Stories
Devonshire Collective, Eastbourne
Monday 24th July – Sunday 20th August, 11-5pm People and spaces are at the heart of this joint photography exhibition. Axel Hesslenberg’s subjects embrace the new, open space on Eastbourne’s Pier. When the old amusement arcade was not rebuilt after the fire, a new wooden decking gave residents and visitors the opportunity to stroll onto the pier, sit and chat like on a Mediterranean plaza. Some alone in their own thoughts, others in groups, all walks of life, a peaceful congregation of everyone. While the fire was tragic, the restauration created a space to breathe. Axel photographs for the Charleston Trust near Firle. Mark Nelson also examines the life of everyday people in their environment, with an air of mystery surrounding each image – from the man alone with a briefcase, slowly making his way home at New York’s Grand Central Station to four girls in Havanna, captured in an impressionistic style on a Summer’s evening. Mark will also be showing his short film Berlin: Alexanderplatz, inspired by the Herman Hesse poem Stufen. Mark is a Brighton-based photographer and filmmaker, and founder of First Light Studios over 30 years ago. Both photographers will give artists’ talks and the dates will be communicated via the Devonshire Collective website and Twitter.

Red Arrows Neck Injury
The Red Arrows and other pilots can rely on the superb engineering and mechanics of their planes. But whilst we stand their gazing into the sky, we should consider some of the superb engineering inside our own bodies! As you look up to the sky, it’s easy to forget how well your own spine is designed.Your neck supports the weight and movement of your head – quite a job considering an adult’s head weighs about fourteen pounds (7kg).

Lushington Chiropractic
Your neck is designed incredibly well. It is mobile and flexible – or at least it starts out that way. Because it is so mobile and delicate, your neck is more vulnerable than you might think. Injuries and strains throughout life take their toll, causing wear and tear. Neck injuries can result in a wide range of symptoms, including headaches, shoulder pain and trapped nerves. The Red Arrows put their bodies through a huge amount of strain with the extreme flying they do. However some experts think that long-term repetitive strains, bad posture and the minor injuries of “normal” life can be just as bad for us. The more rounded your posture, with your head jutting forward the worse the strain on the neck and muscles. Dr Revell from Lushington Chiropractic, says “We seem to be treating more whiplash and neck-related problems than ever. People don’t realise that years of bad posture can be just a serious as a sudden accident or jolt”. Chiropractors are experts in muscle joint and nerve problems. Thousands of people regularly have treatment for neck and other muscle, joint or nerve problems throughout the body. Experts agree that it is better to treat a problem sooner rather than later. At Lushington Chiropractic (01323 722499) our focus is always on the root of a problem, not just hiding the symptoms. We are offering a complementary consultation (normal price £49) to Old Town Crier readers. To be booked with Gemma Crouch DC, MChiro, BSc(Hons) please mention Old Town Crier when booking. Valid until the end of August.

Pregnancy chiropractic and cranial techniques are very gentle and personally tailored to each individual. Doctor of Chiropractic Gemma Crouch DC,MChiro,BSc(HONS) is a wonderfully kind and gentle chiropractor. She has a special interest in chiropractic paediatrics and pregnancy care. She’s seen babies from just a few weeks of age. Gemma Crouch DC,MChiro,BSc(HONS) Doctor of Chiropractic, uses gentle techniques that barely use any pressure. She loves helping new-borns and children.
If you have any questions about how chiropractic could help you during pregnancy or your baby, child of any age she’ll be delighted to help.
Here are some guidelines to help support your child’s natural development: 1. Try to get in some tummy-time. Start with a few minutes at a time and build up the time they spend on their tummy. This encourages the spinal curves to develop properly and stimulates the area of the brain that deals with learning and co-ordination. Remember though to let them sleep on their backs. 2. Embrace your natural instincts to touch, stroke and play with your baby. It helps stimulate them and drives development. 3. Avoid leaving your child in their car seat too long. Car-seats are an essential way to travel safely but don’t get into the habit of carrying them in it for long periods of time.
Lushington Chiropractic is a family friendly practice.
There is so much to think about as a new mum. It’s easy to forget about your posture when you’re feeding your little one or getting them off to sleep. Your body is still recovering from birth so you are more likely to hurt yourself now.
All ages and stages of life.
If you’re suffering or you want a check-up for your baby then Lushington Chiropractic will be pleased to help. They have a large team of chiropractors, so have the training and experience to help you and your baby during these important first few months.

The Unicorn Gentlemen’s Club
By Nicola Grigg Debut author Nicola Grigg’s contemporary romance The Unicorn Gentlemen’s Club is a ‘captivating page turner’ which takes the reader on a ‘thrilling, passionate, and breathtaking journey with plenty of twists and turns’. Nicola’s first selfpublished novel has been met with five star reviews and can be downloaded on Amazon.co.uk and will soon be also available in paperback.
Nicola was born in Birmingham and relocated to Peacehaven in 2002 with her partner. They are special guardians to her partner’s beautiful and very lively fouryear-old granddaughter. Nicola loves animals and has a
Fox Red Labrador, a Harris hawk and three ferrets. Nicola has always enjoyed writing short stories and poems. The first book that captured her imagination and challenged her emotions was Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor. Since then her stories quickly progressed into romance and suspense thriller with a flavour of erotica! Other favourite authors include Martina Cole and Marian Keyes. Nicola is currently writing her second novel The New Boss, which is a laugh out loud romantic comedy due to be published in Autumn 2017. If Nicola is not working on her latest novel, you can find her reading such novels as The Da Vinici Code and Angels & Demons by Dan Brown and 50 Shades of Grey by E.L. James, watching TV dramas such as Apple Tree Yard, Marcella and the new adaption of Sherlock Holmes. Her hobbies include walking her dog, portrait painting and baking with her granddaughter. You can find Nicola on Twitter @nicolagrigg2a and on Facebook https://facebook.com/nicolajgriggauthor

“Pardon?”
If your hearing isn’t as good as it used to be, I suspect that you use this word a lot! Loss of hearing is often not obvious, and generally in places where people gather for meetings or events, the organisations are not that good at accommodating the deaf and hard of hearing. So we are trying to make a difference! A group from Eastbourne churches wants to encourage Deaf BSL users, lip readers, those with levels of hearing loss, church leaders and any others who are interested, to come together on Saturday 16th September, 10am to 2.30pm at Victoria Baptist Church, Eldon Road, Eastbourne for an event called, “Dear Church, can you hear me?” Whilst the main aim is to increase accessibility to church activities, it will be of interest to all who want to understand better the difficulties faced by people with hearing loss, in order to become more effective and welcoming. The day will provide the opportunity for deaf BSL users St. Annes Yellow Pages advert_Layout 1 22/11/2012 15:06
from around East Sussex to gather for Christian fellowship and discussion. We also aim to help churches in Sussex minister more effectively to those with levels of hearing loss. We plan to have BSL sign interpreters and also hope to have note takers to make this event fully accessible. The Rev Susan Myatt, a Baptist Minister who is a Deaf BSL user and the Rev Gill Behenna, the National Deaf Ministry Adviser to the Anglican Church will be speakers. There will be a choice of workshops and after everyone has enjoyed their packed lunches there will be opportunity for feedback from the workshops, and time for questions.
Come and be a part of something which will hopefully make a difference to many people’s lives. For more information email Daphne Brett, dmbrett@btinternet.com, telephone 01323 440450 Page 1 the website www.hellochurch.co.uk or visit
