August and September 2014 – Issue 29

Hello...

...and welcome to the August and September issue...the summer holidays at last (for some anyway!). In this issue we have a variety of health and wellbeing articles throughout the magazine, keeping us in tip-top condition over the summer. There are events and articles that recognise both World War One, page 19 and World War Two on page 6. The Underground Theatre is celebrating 25 years this year – take a look on page 16 for more details. Girl guiding is alive and kicking on page 13, whilst a new drama school is being launched in Eastbourne page 22. There’s news from the Towner Art Gallery on page 21, Community Wise on page 9 and more gardening tips with ‘A View from the Potting Shed’ on page 32. Thanks again to everyone who has emailed articles for this issue – if you would like to publish details of your clubs, organisations and events in the next issue, please email your articles and details to me by Wednesday 10th September! Happy holidays... Fran Tegg Editor

Front Line Eastbourne – WWII exhibition, book and talk Front Line Eastbourne – Exhibition

Visit Eastbourne Heritage Centre’s new Front Line Eastbourne exhibition commemorating 75 years since WWII began. On now until end of 2014, Front Line Eastbourne draws on the book of the same title published in 1945 by Beckett Newspapers. The exhibition shows WWII Eastbourne one of the most heavily bombed towns on the south coast, the endurance of the people who stayed, and the evacuation of the children, destruction by enemy bombing, and now and then photographs of the town. As part of Hitler’s invasion plan, “Operation Sea Lion” to land invading German forces at Pevensey Bay and Cuckmere Haven, Eastbourne was seen as an important communications centre in the area’s coastal defence system. The town became the target of repeated aerial

bombardment, designed to subdue potential local resistance to the planned German invasion force.

Front Line Eastbourne – Book

Eastbourne Heritage Centre has reprinted a replica of Front Line Eastbourne, the 1945 commemorative book packed with WWII press photographs from the Eastbourne Herald and Gazette newspapers. Available from the Heritage Centre shop, price £5.99

Girlguiding alive and kicking in Old Town Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK, providing them with a space where they can be themselves, have fun, build brilliant friendships, gain valuable life skills and make a positive difference to their lives and their communities. Guiding builds girls’ confidence and raises their aspirations, giving them the chance to discover their full potential and encouraging them to be a powerful force for good. Girlguiding is thriving in Old Town with the 24th Eastbourne Rainbows and the 24th Eastbourne Brownies who meet weekly at St Elisabeth’s church hall, and also the 10th Eastbourne Brownies and a new, much longed for Guide unit who meet at St Mary’s church hall. Each unit follows a vibrant and lively program of events, with the girls working towards badges, and gaining experiences and confidence along the way. This year the Brownies celebrate their 100th Birthday with many exciting events taking place. The 10th Eastbourne Brownies recently took part in “Star Quest” at the Herstmonceux Observatory and also walked alongside other Brownie units from East Sussex in

UNDER GROUND THEATRE 25th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS The walls have been newly decorated, the coffeebar has been redesigned, a new silver brochure has been produced and the autumn season has been packed full of exciting new events: now let the celebrations begin. From September through to December the Under Ground Theatre will be hosting several events to mark its 25th year as the home of the Eastbourne Arts Centre Trust, and it will be doing it in style. The theatre has gone through many changes over the last few years: weekend festivals, open stage nights, young band nights, film and art events, society talks and children’s shows; as well as maintaining the established events such as jazz and classical music and the fantastic Saturday morning live music and coffee events. It continues on its quest to appeal to, and make the arts accessible to, all sections of society. To mark its 25th year the UGT has strived to fulfil its aim to provide events for as many sections of society as possible. The latest gap now filled on the UGT line up is for young adults. The UGT has teamed up with Promotorhead; a group of young professionals who actively seek out new vibrant bands and stage live band nights. These nights will consist of two to three talented bands and are at 7.30pm on 19th September, 31st October and 28th November. A special acoustic open stage night has been introduced alongside the regular open stage nights, to entice acoustic musicians and poets into the UGT for more relaxed performances and in a cabaret style layout. Drinks will be sold at special 25th anniversary “promotional” prices at these events throughout this season. They all start at 7.30pm on 25th September, 23rd October and 27th November.

16

The UGT has also introduced a ‘meet the author’ event this season. A local author will talk about their current novel and answer questions in an informal atmosphere. The first event will be held on November 14th at 7.30pm and the author will be crime writer Elly Griffiths. The founder of the UGT chamber music series, Robert Milnes, will be presenting a special celebratory talk at 2pm on Saturday 18th October, about how he turned his ideas for the series into the successful classical event that it is today. On Sunday 26th October he will return to perform an anniversary recital at 2.45pm. The UGT has linked up with Little Chelsea to become part of the increasingly popular family Little Christmas Market and Music event. The UGT will be packed with high quality craft stalls and festive food and drink. Several local musicians and a choir will take to the stage during the evening and will be performing contemporary and traditional festive tunes. There will be street performers stilt-walking, juggling and breathing fire, and children’s workshops. Hunters Moon Morris dancers will open the market. The streets in the area will be closed and filled with stalls and other events, and it all happens on 5th December from 5.30pm until 10pm. This newly revamped and unique theatre has become the home of the arts at the centre of Eastbourne Town Centre, and the heart of the local community. Staffed by volunteers who are dedicated to providing professional dramas, music and art events whilst keeping costs low; the theatre is now enjoying it’s coming of age. With the ongoing help and support of the local community, the Arts Centre will continue to thrive, evolve and touch local lives. www.facebook.com/UGTheatre Twitter: @UnderGroundThr www.undergroundtheatre.co.uk

On Saturday 25th October 2014 St Elisabeth’s Church and Community Centre will be open for prayer from 10am to 4pm. In the main hall we have a prayer labyrinth. A labyrinth is not like a maze with dead ends and confusion. There is a clear way into the centre and back out. It provides opportunities to stop and reflect, and to pray if you wish. As you go round there are helpful guides and visual images to assist you. You have time to unload your burdens and to give thanks for good things that have happened to you. There will also be authorised prayer ministers throughout the day to listen to you in private and to pray for you. (Please note that we do not offer formal counselling, but we are very willing to listen to you and to pray). Light refreshments will be freely available throughout the day. Why not pop in for a while and experience the peace of the place. Photo ©www.sussexparishchurches.org: St Elisabeths church and community centre.

Towner becomes independent charitable Trust Towner is delighted to announce that from 1 July 2014 it begins to operate as an independent charitable Trust (reg charity number 1156762), with David Dimbleby as Chairman, a new Board of nine Trustees (see below for list) and Duke of Devonshire as Towner’s new Patron. Emma Morris, Towner’s Executive Director, leads the visual arts organisation during an exciting and dynamic phase: its move to independence from Eastbourne Borough Council means that Towner will have a greater range of fundraising opportunities at its disposal. With Eastbourne Borough Council as a major stakeholder, the Trust is also supported by funding from Arts Council England, who announced its National portfolio programme for 2015 – 2018, of which Towner has been selected through a highly competitive application process.

Towner will be celebrating the official launch of the Trust with a special weekend of activity taking place on 12th – 14th September 2014. This will include the Peggy Angus exhibition, which is Towner’s major summer show, plus another major milestone for the gallery: the opening of a new room devoted to the work of Eric Ravilious. The Towner Collection is best known for its modern British art – including the largest and most significant body of work by Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) – and a growing collection of international contemporary art. The move to Trust is a major milestone for an organisation with a long and rich heritage spanning nearly a century. Sparked by Alderman John Chisholm Towner’s painting bequest, the organisation began as Towner Art Gallery in 1923, which saw its new Collection housed in a Georgian manor house. As the demand for Towner’s work and Collection expanded, so did the need for bigger premises. A new

purpose-built modernist gallery was designed by award-winning Rick Mather Architects and opened in 2009 as the permanent home for the organisation. Today, Towner is recognised as a major cultural leader in Eastbourne, East Sussex and the South East region with its award-winning programme of contemporary and historic visual arts, realised through its major exhibitions, education and learning, and an internationally renowned 4,000 work Collection. Emma Morris, Executive Director, says, “We are thrilled to become an independent charitable Trust. I would like to thank Eastbourne Borough Council and Arts Council England for their continued support. This is a significant milestone for Towner, and being a Trust should enable us to raise more money to do more great art for all. “We know first-hand that art enriches the lives of the people we work with, from the very old to the very young, and inspires the next generation of leaders. Thousands flock to our gallery every month, generating income in Eastbourne and East Sussex. We know we can continue to achieve great things by working with our local partners and agencies. “We are delighted that Arts Council England has renewed its commitment to Eastbourne Borough Council and reinforces Towner as a new charitable independent Trust. We look forward to working with them to deliver their mission of great art for everyone regionally and nationally.”

Towner, Devonshire Park, College Road, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ, free entry. Open Tues – Sun, and Bank Holidays, 10am – 6pm. For more information see townereastbourne.org.uk Photos left: Tiles by Peggy Angus, above: Chairman David Dimbleby and The Towner Contemporary Art Museum.

Fit and Healthy for Summer? Are you making the most of the summer in Sussex by being outdoors, enjoying a country walk, game of tennis or a round of golf? Many of us try to get a bit healthier in the Summer by exercising and watching what we eat.

But it’s all too easy to fall into some fad or one minute wonder. Getting fitter and healthier involves lifestyle changes and sustained good habits. We’ve got a few practical pointers: 1 If you are going to get fit this summer then remember to drink lots of water. We should have about 6 to 8 glasses a day. Feeling hungry can sometimes be sign that your body is dehydrated and you need more water. 2 Summer is a great time to make sure you are getting your five-a-day. This means a mixture of fruit and vegetables, not just extra helpings of sweet fruits like strawberries.

3 Think positively and be happier. When you reach your health goals or you keep to a new habit, remember to celebrate and congratulate yourself. Don’t make it all hard work or you’ll never stick to it. 4 Take new exercise or activity carefully, listen to your body and stop if you feel any pain. 5 DIY and gardening are great ways to get something done around the house and keep more active. Listen to your body when you get tired or achy. There is no point in pushing through pain barriers. You can always finish the job tomorrow.

FOCUS ON HEALTH Is the heat getting to you? Or the high pollen count...? We should feel energised in summer but heatwaves and hayfever can seriously affect our energy levels. Acupuncture can help alleviate symptoms and improve energy levels as it treats the whole person by working with Qi (the life energy) to maintain a natural balance within, and correct ill health. When the body is in balance, the Qi flows freely bringing balance to the whole body. Fine single use sterile needles are inserted into specific points over the body. These points are specifically chosen to stimulate the body’s own natural healing process, by either dispersing blockages or nourishing the body to promote Qi. This helps to treat the root cause of disease and improve wellbeing by dispersing blockages and by accessing reservoirs to replenish exhausted energy, helping to treat and prevent disease.

Try a treatment this summer £10 DISCOUNT IN AUG & SEPT What are the benefits of acupuncture?

Acupuncture’s major benefit is the treatment and alleviation of symptoms. However acupuncture may also: l Be safely used alongside conventional medicine. l Increase vitality and improve energy levels l Reduce stress levels. l Promote relaxation and improve sleep. l Promote feeling of well being.

Will it hurt?

Some people may experience some sensation of tingling or itching around the site of the needle while others are completely unaware that the needles have been inserted!

How will I feel after a treatment?

Most people feel relaxed after a treatment with a greater sense of wellbeing. The symptoms of depression include low mood, loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, loss of appetite and energy, sleep disturbance, feeling agitated or lethargic, worthless or guilty, difficulty in thinking straight and having repeated thoughts about suicide. Antidepressant drugs may help some people because they lift levels of a “feel-good” chemical in the brain; unfortunately, they do nothing to change

All this kind of negative imagining and thinking saps an enormous amount of energy – and makes people utterly miserable.

A view from the Potting Shed

W

ith a huge array of colourful plants available from garden centres, expertly sourced from around the globe, we are continuously spoiled when it comes to choosing new plants for our gardens. Fabulous flowers and tropical foliage can bring an incredibly lush feel to a garden, but don’t overlook the natural beauty of our native plants, just because they’re right outside your door.

Many of the plants native to the UK flower in spring, such as the sweetly but delicately scented primroses. Then there are the striking red poppies which adorn the fields mid-way through the year. Wild, hardy Geraniums grow in the most unlikely places and are very happy naturalised in grasses, proudly showing off their “Chelsea purple” flowers. The stunning blooms of Pulsatilla vulgaris (pasque flower) are perfectly displayed over foamy foliage, and are low growing and very well behaved (perfect for the modern gardener). Their hairy seed heads also look fun long after the flowers have faded. May and June is showtime for the foxgloves, whose tall slender stems carry beautiful purple and white spires of flowers which will seed prolifically and brighten a dull corner. Take care if you have small children though as foxgloves are poisonous if ingested.

32

Using native plants can also mean a higher rate of success, even in our variable climate, so if your fingers are not so green, it’s harder to kill these plants – they’re born survivors! Happy summer gardening! Lee Bestall to

do

The most obvious British wonders are the beautiful old Oak trees, flowering cherries and mixed hedgerows, even the invasive cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) looks great en-masse in spring, but when it comes to plants deemed “garden worthy”, consider the traditional (and modern) use of tightly clipped Yew, Holly and Box, which have been favoured for generations. Beech (Fagus) is another popular hedging variety, often selected for its beautiful autumn and winter colour, and again, it’s one of our natives!

The Asian moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are popular houseplants, but our wild orchid is a plant to treasure. Often found in woodland settings, the purple flowers lurk around on the cool and shady forest floor. For a similar native, more easily available to buy and worth planting this month, look for Colchicums or naked ladies – so called as they produce their flowers well before the leaves appear. The bulbs are quite expensive individually, but quickly bulk up if happy, and will very soon provide you with a flower that will become an interesting talking point. Commonly known as the Autumn Crocus, it does seem strange to see it in flower in September, but it has to be one of my favourite native bulbs.

what

Native, but nice!

JOBS TO DO IN AUG & Sept

3 Finish harvesting what’s left of any “early” potatoes and start to dig up the first of your “main” crop. 3 Onions are ready for harvesting when the foliage collapses and the neck is not soft and sappy. Lift the bulbs with a fork. Leave on the surface to dry. Take under cover if the weather is wet. 3 Slip a tile or something flat under courgettes, marrows and squashes to keep off the soil. Try training courgettes up a pole, tie plant carefully so as not to damage it. 3 Start deadheading fuchsias and remove all seedpods. If left on these pods will sap the energy of the plant and it will stop flowering. 3 Remove the growing tips of tomatoes after four or five trusses. At the end of August cease feeding and start to reduce watering which will stop fruit from splitting. Mike Parker (RHS Seaford)
