Local Artists RaisE Money for Pier TRADERS A group of Eastbourne artists felt passionate about helping the pier traders after the devastating fire. This strong sense community spirit resulted in an exhibition of 300 paintings and a selection of cards by 27 artists. The event was sponsored by Christopher Copping of the newly refurbished West Rocks Hotel, who donated the use of the hotel and postage. Andrew Curry, proprietor of PlanAHead, sponsored all the printing costs. Professional artist Nicolas Englefield kindly contributed two paintings for the raffle, which was hugely popular. Through the generosity of the sponsors the artists were able to make a larger donation of £525.60 to the Pier Traders Benevolent Fund. Stephen Lloyd MP officially opened the exhibition and talked about the strong community spirit of Eastbourne people, which is what makes this town so successful. He complimented the artists on their dedication and high standards. The Mayor Cllr. Janet Coles attended the exhibition. She congratulated everyone involved on the tremendous effort of putting together an exhibition in just six weeks. After a look around The Mayor was impressed by the exceptional quality of the work. This exhibition would not have been possible without the amazing army of volunteers who gave up their time for the cause. Thanks also go to the pier traders who

supplied information about themselves and who are now thankfully back on our wonderful pier. Photo: l-r Stephen Lloyd M.P., Jackie Steggall, Janet McGowan, Christopher Copping (hotel owner).
Thank You for the Music The Eastbourne Schools Partnership Busking Day (Saturday 4th October) raises over £1,000 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Young people across Eastbourne braved the elements on Saturday 4th October to hold a charity Busking Day, raising funds for St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Despite the deteriorating weather, the event received fantastic support, raising over £1,000 for the local charity. Eastbourne Schools Partnership, which sees students from local schools and Sussex Downs College working together in the community, organised the day’s music events. Students stationed themselves at various locations around the town, including the iconic Wish Tower. The event culminated in an evening concert held at The Birley Centre. Nikki says, “Keep moving through the winter with Bowen Therapy” Can you explain what Bowen Therapy is? It’s a very gentle muscle release therapy that can be applied on various points of the body through light clothing. It is non-invasive and can be used to treat many conditions including, arthritic pain, respiratory problems and joint pain. It can be very effective in helping to keep joints moving through the cold Winter months. That sounds too good to be true. How can one therapy be used to treat so many different conditions? Because it’s not the therapist who resolves the problem. It works by asking the brain to address the condition and in effect, the body heals itself. Results are often felt after the first session. However, in order for the results to be more permanent, I recommend a course of three treatments. After which many conditions are resolved, and need only an occasional top-up treatment. What brought you to Bowen Therapy? I discovered Bowen Therapy after having extensive treatment for RSI. I had been suffering from acute wrist pain for over two years, cortisone injections anti-inflammatory tablets, MRI scans. You name it, I’d had it.....but I was still in a lot of pain. One day, I was passing a clinic that offered Bowen Therapy. Not expecting a great deal, but out of desperation, I went in. The therapist offered to treat me there and then, and after the session, he told me that I would feel a considerable improvement the next day.
“Impossible”, I thought. “How can that be?” The treatment hadn’t hurt. In fact I’d felt very little at all. But when I woke up the next day, the pain that I had lived with for over two years had almost disappeared! The therapist had suggested a follow up treatment for longer lasting relief, so I went along, and asked him a lot of questions about training. Bear in mind, what made it so incredible was that I had not believed it was possible. It was not a question of mind over matter. Quite the opposite in fact. I became a Bowen Therapist because I had not believed it was possible for such a dramatic change to be achieved in such a gentle, simple manner. Since that wonderful day, thanks to Bowen Therapy, I don’t suffer from RSI, and another amazing improvement is that although still an asthmatic, my daily use of an inhaler has reduced to occasional use only. So that’s when you decided to train to become a Bowen Therapist? That’s right, and now I am using a consulting room in the Michelham Unit at the Eastbourne DGH, where the facilities are second to none, so that I can introduce Bowen Therapy to more people. My aim is to help as many people as possible get relief from their pain or discomfort.
How do you see the future of Bowen Therapy? It makes me sad to see people suffering long-term pain, when in many cases, Bowen Therapy can be the drug-free answer. So it is my hope that this treatment will eventually be recognised Nikki Wright is at the Michelham Private Patients’ Unit and will be available on the in the Eastbourne D.G.H. Our Place: Annual Schools Exhibition 2015
Celebrating the built heritage of the South Downs The South East’s most popular annual exhibition of art work created by schoolchildren has expanded its reach across Sussex with the addition of two new partner sites: Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, West Sussex and the Flora Twort Gallery Petersfield, Hampshire. Working in partnership with the South Downs National Park, Towner and the two galleries will be engaging schools across Hampshire, West and East Sussex in a project that draws on the rich resources of the national park and local museums and galleries. This year’s theme for the exhibition is Our Place and invites school children to look at the built heritage of the South Downs – whether ancient or modern, domestic or industrial, places of worship or commemoration. The works chosen from the collections at the partner galleries will show school children how different artists have chosen to represent places that have meaning or interest for them. The project will run from November 2014 to March 2015 and offers art education resource packs, gallery visits and outdoor sessions to explore the built heritage of the National Park – see end for list of sites. The project will culminate in exhibitions at the three galleries from March to September 2015. The exhibition will take the form of small scale buildings made by pupils, whose schools will be issued with a 1m2 ‘plot of land’ each. A focus will be made on works from Towner’s Collections by Eric Ravilious, John Piper, Robert Tavener, William Nicholson, William Raine, Harold Mockford, and John R. Biggs. Amongst the works from the Towner’s Collection is an additional loaned work by locally based contemporary artist Wycliffe Stutchbury. For the past five years, over 7,000 school pupils have had an opportunity to respond to Towner’s Collection and participate in an exciting exhibition in the South East’s largest contemporary art gallery. Schoolchildren taking part in the Annual Schools

Exhibition can gain an Arts Award and schools can achieve ArtsMark or Artsmark Gold. Amanda Elmes, who leads on learning and outreach for the South Downs National Park Authority said, “The rolling chalk hills of the South Downs have been lived on and shaped by people from more than 500,000 years. We can trace this history through iron-age forts, Roman palaces, Saxon churches, medieval villages, Norman castles, Elizabethan manors, Georgian mansions, Victorian houses, 20th century war defences and all the way to modern architecture. It’s exciting to be working with Towner, Worthing Museum and the Flora Twort Gallery to share this story with students from across Sussex and Hampshire. I can’t wait to see the results.” Clare Halstead, Head of Learning at Towner, said, “This year’s Annual Schools Exhibition project is set to be one of the most exciting yet, through our partnership with South Downs National Park Authority, Worthing Museum and the Flora Twort Gallery. We are lucky in the South East to have the South Downs on our doorstep, and what better way for school children to explore this rich natural heritage than through arts and culture? We are looking forward to having even more schools and their pupils sign up and take part this year.” Exhibitions schedule: Towner Gallery Fri 27th March – Sun 31st May, Flora Twort Gallery Tues 24th March – Sun19th April Worthing Museum and Art Gallery Sat 23rd May – Sat 19th September. Our Place: Annual Schools Exhibition 2015, Towner, Devonshire Park, College Road, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ, free entry. Open Tues - Sun, and Bank Holidays, 10am - 5pm. Eastbourne Jobs Hub is for people of all ages and current positions, as manager Rachel Parsons explains, “It’s not just for people who are looking for work and have been out of work for a long time; it’s for young people looking for a first job. It’s for semi-retired people who are bored at home. It’s for people looking for university degrees, MBAs… There is support there for employers as well – if you need help with apprenticeships, you want to grow your workforce, you want to build skills in your existing workforce – this is what Eastbourne Jobs Hub is here to help with.” Tim Cobb, of Cobb Digital, adds, “Three things you get here at Eastbourne Jobs Hub are help with writing backto-job descriptions, free interview rooms and CV vetting. The team can even sit in on your interview panel. It’s a great service for busy employers and it’s free of charge.” For those still unsure of how Eastbourne Jobs Hub can help if they’ve been long-term unemployed, Stephen Lloyd gave a passionate speech at the launch, saying, “It’s not that long-term unemployed people don’t want to work. It’s not because they don’t have the skills and the talent. If you’re out of work for a long time, something goes inside. It just does. I know that from my own experience.” Eastbourne Jobs Hub aims to restore people’s confidence and boost people’s self-respect. Mr Lloyd continued, “We are doing inspirational things [in Eastbourne], and that’s such a privilege to be involved with. Rebecca, the team and the partners have all come together to actually raise the game even further. To do it the Eastbourne way even more.” To find out more, visit the Eastbourne Jobs Hub at Eastbourne Library, Monday to Wednesday 10am4.30pm, Thursday 10am-6.30pm and Friday 10.30am4.30pm. Breathe with Cerys to help fund research into cystic fibrosis A family from the Eastbourne area is leading a campaign to raise awareness about cystic fibrosis by posting a YouTube video about their daughter, Cerys, who was diagnosed with the disease last year. The video follows Cerys’s progress from birth to the present day and can be viewed by searching online for Cerys’s CF Journey Facebook (actual link is: https:// www.facebook.com/pages/Ceryss-Cystic-FibrosisJourney/249079878581743). The footage also outlines details of a straw breathing selfie campaign that people can participate in to help raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening genetic condition – only half live to celebrate their 40th birthday. It causes the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, to become clogged with thick sticky mucus, resulting in chronic infections and inflammation of the lungs. “Cerys was rushed into hospital aged two days old with a blocked bowel condition called meconium ileus,” said Cerys’s dad, Steve. “She had an operation to clear the blockage. The diagnosis of cystic fibrosis as the cause of the condition followed later – it was a double hammer blow.” A person living with cystic fibrosis can often appear healthy, but inside it is a different story. Cerys is now 15 months old (photo top right), a seemingly robust toddler with a sunny disposition. What most people fail to realise is the huge amount of medical attention and physiotherapy performed by her family, that go into keeping Cerys well. Her ongoing regime includes regular hospital visits, routinely taking vitamins and antibiotics and undergoing physiotherapy twice daily (or more frequently if she has a cough) – with no days off. The family also have to try to avoid risk factors, such as people with heavy colds and warm, moist environments that can harbour pseudomonas bacteria, which can
12
cause serious infections in people with CF. “Cerys has a public Facebook page because we wanted to explain to people how full-on and difficult the lifestyle is for a person with cystic fibrosis, and of course for their family too. Most people will know that CF is a condition that has something to do with the lungs, but they do not realise the full impact it has on daily life,” said Steve. “We decided to make a video about Cerys’s cystic fibrosis journey, when we came across the straw breathing selfie (strawfie) campaign. “By breathing through a narrow straw while pinching their nose for approximately 60 seconds, people can experience the sensation that a person living with cystic fibrosis may have to endure, for example, after an intense coughing fit. The idea is for people to take a selfie while trying the straw breathing to show empathy and support for those living with the condition. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, so we are trying to go the extra mile to raise awareness and funds to help find a cure. “We are asking people to post their selfie online and donate a minimum of £1 by texting BWCF64 £(amount) to 70070.” A song linked to the campaign, is also available to download from iTunes, with all proceeds from downloads going to the CF Trust. Details of the song by TWF featuring annaJo can be found at www.breathewithme.info and donations can also be made on the website, by clicking the “Donate” button on the welcome page. ROLY POLY’S DOUBLES IN SIZE Stephen Lloyd MP ofiicially opened Roly Poly’s, Eastbourne’s, a bigger children’s clothes and toy shop, less than a year after he opened their original first shop.
He said, “I was delighted to launch Roly Poly’s bigger shop in the Enterprise Centre last weekend. I remember opening their first shop a year ago, a brand new venture by both Katie and Tom. A lovely young couple determined to make their dream come true; and it has. Roly Poly’s is such a success they have moved to a new shop that’s double the size!” Owners Katie and Tom Waller say, “We are excited about the challenge a bigger shop brings. We hope that our customers will enjoy a wider range of stock and new play area when they visit. We’d like to thank the management team at the Enterprise Centre for all of their support over the last year.” Roly Poly’s new store has created new employment opportunities in the area and is part of an overall redevelopment plan of the Enterprise Shopping Centre, a place for young businesses to start out and grow. Besides Stephen Lloyd MP cutting the ribbon, the team were also joined by regular customers and Muddles the Monkey, and celebrated with competitions, free gifts and discounts.

BEAUTIFUL furnishing fabrics at beautiful prices
Inspired by a combination of majestic local scenery and new parent’s outlook on life, Adam McNaughtDavis has spent the last year working on a series of graphic prints which cast a contemporary light on our familiar surroundings. “A year ago Rupert was born, and with it came blind panic,” Adam said. “I thought, ‘What have I done which will mean anything for him when I’m gone?”’ Adam turned his day-job skills in a new direction, and the result is a growing set of graphic

prints of the South Downs and beyond. The series of prints which are for sale on his website and in shops in Eastbourne, Alfriston and beyond, include Beachy Head, Seven Sisters, The Long Man and other well known sights.
Adam added, “I come from Journalism. I believe in headline-like simplicity and clarity. I want to tell a short, powerful story and try to persuade viewers to seek out the real thing, the sight itself, for themselves. You can’t beat being there as we all know. “These are the sights Rupert will be growing up around, and hopefully will come to love like I do. CONCENTUS SINGS CHRISTMAS A composer once invited his singers into a song they had written with these words, “Sing music makers, sing a song for the joy of singing!” and that sums up exactly the heart of the music makers of Concentus choir. This Eastbourne based choir finds genuine joy in the love of singing and their audiences respond warmly as they reflect back their joy in hearing them. Members of Concentus travel from around the Eastbourne, Lewes and Wealden areas every Monday night, and gather eagerly at Upperton United Reformed Church to practice choral pieces. With pencils sharpened, to mark directions upon newly distributed musical scores, the sopranos, altos, tenors and basses warble out notes to their ever patient and well-loved Musical Director Adrian Brown, and to their long suffering talented pianists! Week after week the choir learns the score until it finally becomes a piece worthy of being offered to a paying audience. What spine tingling joy is then experienced by choir members
in that very moment when, at long last, the composition comes masterfully together and feels as though it were being transported by one voice. Indeed the very name, Concentus means agreement, harmony and unity and this is apparent in the friendliness and caring heart of the choir. Next year Concentus will be celebrating 10 years together and have to date raised almost £20,000 through their performances for their chosen charity, the JPK Project. As residents of Old Town will know, this project, to supply assisted living for young adults with learning disabilities, is evolving at the newly acquired Edgmond Church site on Church Street in Old Town. This site will also be used by the choir on Friday nights for additional practice as their Christmas concerts and performances draw ever nearer. So if you would like to experience Consentus’ joy as they sing a fun-filled and very varied (traditional and modern) programme this Christmas, come along to St Saviour’s and St Peter’s Church, South Street in Eastbourne on Saturday 20th December at 4pm. Be prepared to sing yourself too when Adrian invites the audience to feel the spirit of Christmas as well loved carols are sung. Also, the choir likes to share its joy of singing and always opens its doors to new members. You don’t have to read music, you just need to hold a note, be willing to learn and to become expert at chuckling at the (awful) jokes that Adrian tells! Tickets can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre and Semantics (33 Grove Road) in Eastbourne. Also from Evelyn on 01323 643358 and online from Ticket Source.Visit our Website www. concentuschorale.com Lynn Large – Choir Member

Can anyone do Pilates?
Yes! Pilates is suitable for all, regardless of age, size or fitness level. Every exercise can be adapted or modified to meet individual needs. Doctors, physiotherapists, dancers and athletes have long revered Pilates as a powerful healing and physical training system. Pilates has a strong focus on building your “powerhouse” – giving you all the strength and stamina you need for a strong, lean and healthy body. Many people also turn to Pilates to help relieve pain and for the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, especially lower back pain.

PETER PAN AT THE UNDER GROUND THEATRE Saturday 17th January 2015 AT 2.30pm & 7.30pm Peter Pan will be flying into the Under Ground theatre on 17th January, and he is bringing his guitar! This new and funky version of the classic J M Barrie tale will be coming to Eastbourne for one day only and will be at the UGT at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Full of the magic and charm of the original, the stage is set in a supermarket and it has a soundtrack designed to get audiences toes tapping. It’s five minutes until closing time at Price Land and A-Level student and cashier Wendy Darling discovers Wonderland – “second star to the left and straight on ’til morning!” She encounters a misunderstood Captain Hook, a hot guitarist Peter Pan, a Tinker Bell straight out of “TOWIE,” and a sprinkle of fairy dust.

Award Winning Lushington Chiropractic is helping Local People Living with Arthritis Arthritis is a painful and debilitating condition and can have a significant impact on the quality of life of individuals suffering from this disease. On 12th October 2014, World Arthritis Day, local Eastbourne clinic, Lushington Chiropractic, is highlighting the benefits Chiropractic care can have for those suffering from this condition. Local leading chiropractor James Revell says, “I’ve seen too many people who’ve written themselves off and put up with joint and muscle pain needlessly. Obviously there’s no miracle cure, but there is plenty people can do to look after themselves better including receiving advice, and hands on treatment. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine reported that 63% of patients who visited a rheumatologist for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia conditions also sought some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Of these individuals 31% (almost a third) chose Chiropractic care, making Chiropractic the most popular alternative
used by this group of people. Importantly, 73% of these patients determined that Chiropractic care was helpful in controlling their chronic pain. James Revell adds, “Reducing the use of prescription medicines or over-the-counter medications such as NSAIDs for pain relief means harmful side effects and addiction from long term use is reduced. The lifestyle changes associated with chiropractic recommendations will also positively influence diet, exercise and overall health.â€? Lushington Chiropractic’s ability to control some symptoms through Chiropractic care not only reduces the financial burden on the NHS (arthritis cases are set to double by 2030!) but more importantly it improves the quality of life of those suffering from the disease, and may in some cases delay the necessity to take early retirement. This December Lushington Chiropractic is offering Half Price Consultations usually worth ÂŁ49, offer ends 31st December. To book a half price consultation call Lushington Chiropractic on 01323 722499. Please bring this article with you to claim your half price consultation.

A Case in Point – Anxiety
Being a nurse I have always been fascinated by what makes us tick, but from a young age I began to learn an alternative explanation to our wellbeing. Over the years a integrated view of health developed further when I undertook a degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which masterfully explains the link between our mental, spiritual and physical health. One complaint, so common to us all, is anxiety, which can be so disabling, affecting a persons ability to function to their full potential. TCM recognises that a degree of fear has a positive aspect, in that when we have experienced fear we cultivate wisdom and empathy for others. However long term fear, the emotion that arises in the face of the unknown has a detrimental affect on our physical and mental health. Good kidney energy constitutes ability to exert one’s will, i.e. try out new things to put ones ideas into practice if we are in fear, we cannot achieve. Understanding that in order to live life with joy there is a strong connection between the heart/kidney energy and treatment works

~ For life in flow
to rebalance the two. The kidney is related to the water element, where we can move forward in life like water, unimpeded. Many acupuncture points on the kidney channel are related to water. There are many acupuncture points able to treat specific types of anxiety but here are a couple of my favourites.
Two points to treat Fear
Kidney-5, Water Spring: This point encourages the communication of kidney energy to the heart. There is a sense of freezing with fear when imbalanced (the heart is connected to fire element, therefore warming) so our vitality is lost. There maybe rigidity of the spine and bones, we may fear contact with the outside world – this can be likened to agoraphobia (fear of going out) and anxiety to the extreme of paranoia. Kidney-3, Great Mountain Stream: This point helps balance the flow of kidney energy, (like a mountain stream) if flowing too rapidly fear overwhelms us like a river breaching it’s banks, on the other hand if the flow of energy if impeded neediness and worry will prevail.
Tales from the treatment couch
Many people live with fear and anxiety for year’s in fact TCM implies it can be inherent or may be caused by a great trauma. Alex came to me for treatment after years of anxiety, the cause of which he could not pinpoint. There seemed no help after years of anti-depressants; he learnt to live with it. Sometimes he could function adequately enough, other times he was unable to leave the house, which obviously had implications. After a course of acupuncture treatment the anxiety became less pronounced, and like the reflection upon water, he was able to trace the anxiety back to traumatic accident.

Chiropractors use safe, gentle and very specific spinal adjustments (manipulation) to free up the joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly or are poorly aligned. When vertebrae in the spine lose their proper position or motion they can irritate or interfere with the activity of the delicate spinal nerves that pass between them.

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH ADDICTION
You may choose to call it a craving, a fancy, a bit of a dependence but the truth is that anyone who becomes overly drawn to or obsessed by any activity – whether drinking alcohol, taking drugs, over- or undereating, shopping, gambling, sex or even doing good deeds – is trying to fill a void or block out something that is missing in their lives. (Even smoking may start for that reason.) That’s why the human givens approach, which focuses on helping people in distress find healthy ways to meet their emotional needs, is such a successful method for overcoming addictions. We know, from research, that people who feel fulfilled in their lives do not need (or stop needing) to indulge in addictive activities. In one famous experiment, rats were offered either morphine-laced water or ordinary water. When rats were kept alone in small cages, they tended to opt for the morphine, but when they were kept in groups in areas similar to their natural habitats,

they preferred to drink the water. When the rats in the natural habitat were then put singly into cages, they started choosing the morphine-laced water, while the rats originally in the cages stopped choosing the morphine when put into natural-style habitats. This showed clearly that, when needs were met, rats did not want drugs. The same effect is found in humans. Most young people give up drug experimentation when they start careers and families. People are much more likely to get caught up in addiction when important needs cease to be met, perhaps because of loss, caused by the death of someone close, a relationship ending, redundancy or illness, or by dissatisfaction arising from boredom or feeling trapped. Sometimes such circumstances lead first to depression and then to addiction. It is now known that all addictive behaviours work through the same common pathway in the brain – the expectation pathway. We “expect” the addictive behaviour to make us feel better, as we recall pleasurable memories associated with the addictive activity, rather than remembering all the downsides associated with the activity. So, when human givens practitioners help someone to overcome an addictive activity, they focus first on helping people knock out the expectations of pleasure that addiction falsely feeds us. If you have ever tried to stop an activity you are rather over-partial to, you may recall that, when you first decide not to have that drink or that cigarette or switch on the shopping channel, you don’t feel any great discomfort. It is as time goes on that the craving grows, often until it is irresistible. How this works in the brain and how Human Givens practitioners can help will be explored in next month’s article. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact Lynda on 01323 897287 or email:

A view from the Potting Shed ow many seeds have you eaten today? Probably more than you realise. As a nation, we consume tons of them every day and whether they are ground to make our bread or sprinkled on our burger bun, seeds play an important role in our diet…as well as in our garden! Most of the seed heads that were left over from autumn have now fallen over, disintegrated, or been eaten by hungry birds, so as part of my ‘outdoor housework’ I’m cutting them down to ground level before the new growth begins to emerge next year. It may be cold outside, but now is the perfect time for planning what to grow this year, from seed of course! Over recent years, the popularity of growing your own vegetables has meant that veg seed sales have overtaken ic o op f

To give them the best start in life, most seeds require just a tray of compost and some warmth. Large seeds should be covered over with compost, but small seeds left uncovered as they often don’t have enough energy to push new leaves through the soil. Prick out singly once large enough to handle and grow on somewhere frost-free, before gradually hardening off ready for life outdoors. Until next time, happy winter gardening! Lee Bestall to d

The Poinsettia, as seen above, is the most popular Christmas plant that produces attractive red, pink or white bracts during winter. It has probably been grown under ideal conditions so take care in getting it home then treat it as follows. They prefer normal room temperatures (13°C or 55°F) during winter months. Increase this to 18°C or 64°F from April. If you want it to flower for a second year then allow the plant to dry out then prune to about four inches above the compost. Resume watering then in April re-pot with fresh compost and keep warm. From June to September feed weekly with a half strength general fertilizer. From September give the plant at least 14 hours of total darkness each day for eight weeks. Cover with a box or black plastic bag. Check regularly at night to see if it needs water. By next Christmas it should bloom again and it will be larger!
those of traditional flowers, but you really can’t beat the satisfaction of plants from seed. The first plants I ever grew were Snap Dragons. I was fifteen, and I found the packet in the back of a drawer. I diligently followed the instructions for sowing. What happened next really was a miracle. They germinated! It was hard to believe that the old seed, uneven layer of compost and over watered soil produced a rash of new seedlings. I potted them on and they produced the most beautiful range of colours all summer long, and that was the moment I became hooked on gardening. It wasn’t really a surprise that they germinated, as that’s what seeds are designed to do. They can survive in their dormant state for years, and because there are often more seeds per packet than you know what to do with, I always sow just a few more than I need and return the rest to a sealed container in the fridge. Stored like this they keep for years.

Put a thick layer of compost or straw over the crown of perennial plants. Hold straw down with some wire netting. Wanted: Artist to dive and show the magic of our seas! Sussex Wildlife Trust is encouraging established marine artists or those still at college in the county to apply for a national award to enable them to undergo dive training to gain inspiration for their work. The Undersea Art Award, organised jointly by The Wildlife Trusts and the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA), will not only pay for an artist to learn how to dive, but will give them the opportunity to exhibit their art inspired by marine life at the SWLA annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. Previous winners have created wonderful art works to highlight the urgent need for Marine Conservation Zones – from paintings to sculpture.

Applicants have until Friday 27th February to say how they’d make the most of the experience. The award, established in 2007, provides a bursary for an established artist to learn to dive and then to work underwater off the coast, recording the wildlife of the sea. Sussex Wildlife Trust Marine Officer, Olle Åkesson, said ‘The Undersea Art Award funds diving lessons for artists with a passion for nature who want to find out more about the astonishingly varied submerged landscapes around UK shores. The idea is to create art inspired by the creatures which live in our wonderful cold water coral beds, sponge meadows, canyons and sandbanks.’

Marine Conservation Zones are a type of protected area at sea where human activity is restricted to protect wildlife and habitats. The Government is creating these zones in the seas around England, following the passing of the Marine & Coastal Access Act (2009). These protected areas will allow sustainable use of the sea whilst protecting a range of species and habitats found in English waters from damaging activity. Dear Reader... Do you have an umbrella stand in your hall? If so, what does it contain? I ask this because we only have one umbrella in ours, and its companions are a motley crew. There is my 50-year-old walking stick, which I only used when we had a dog, the last of which, a Papillon/Peke virtually died in my arms after it was attacked by a great big Black Russian terrier only 100 yards from home. Then comes my stepmother Eve’s black, rubber ferruled stick and beside it the steel-topped shooting stick that belonged to my Aunt Madge, which accompanied us on over a hundred Beagling trips in days gone by. Finally comes the odd one out, a shamrock-crested shillelagh, which was my constant bed-companion on school holidays whilst staying with my grandparents during the War...some nasty Nazi would’ve got a bonk on the bean if he’d broken in! The only umbrella is a pretty, blue, very feminine one that might’ve appealed to my old stick in years gone by, but the Irishman would’ve offered little for the frilly blue lady, unless she fancied a bit of “rough”. LAPTOP CLINIC
As part of the Under Ground Theatre’s ongoing mission to empower patrons to get the best from available technology, new for 2015 is their Laptop Clinic. People of all ages often find their laptops slowing down, behaving oddly, or just taking them on a journey across the internet they can see they’re not in control of. The UGT hopes to put that right. Starting on Friday 30th January at 1pm, and continuing throughout the year on the last Friday of every month, the public are invited to bring in their laptop PCs, where our professional tech volunteers will be pleased to step-by-step demonstrate how to perform essential maintenance to speed up machines, to troubleshoot any niggling problems that may have developed, and to give tips and tricks how to improve your relationship with your computer. What’s more, the sessions are free – but donations are welcomed if you’ve gained the knowledge you hoped for – and we hope you’ll buy and enjoy the refreshments available in our improved coffee bar bistro throughout your stay. Your computer experience should be fun, easy, and with you always in control. With the UGT’s technical help, it should be. On Fridays - 30th January, 27th February, 27th March and 24th April from 1pm at the Eastbourne Under Ground Theatre (under the library, 1 Grove Road). Call in at the UGT during opening times to book a session, or arrive on the days from 1pm. First come, first served.
