December 2017 / January 2018– Issue 49
Hello...
...and welcome to the December and January issue of the Eastbourne Old Town Crier. I can’t believe it’s December already, this year has just flown by! In this Christmas and New Year issue we have news from Eastbourne Storytellers on page 7 and Community Wise on page 6. There are choral concerts from Concentus on page 19, Bourne Chorus on page 28 and the Downland singers on page 14, and if you’ve ever wondered why we hang wreaths at Christmas, then A View From The Potting Shed on page 22 will explain why, along with gardening tips for December and January. We also have an article on the history of Christmas Decorations on page 26 and if you still haven’t bought your Christmas cards, then turn to page 5 for details of where you can buy your Christmas cards in support of local charities. May I take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported the Eastbourne Old Town Crier magazine this year, and to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year. community wise This year both Christmas and New Year’s Day land on a Monday. Tuesday 26th is a bank holiday. No doubt many people who work Monday-Friday will want to plan a full ten days away from work, and will be able to by taking only three days of holiday leave. Even if you’re working, the time between Christmas and New Year seems to be a truly in-between time. Offices are quiet, phone calls and emails fewer. We don’t have a name for this, or for what we do with those days between Christmas and New Year, but the Norwegians call this time of quiet Romjul. Traditionally, people plan their New Year resolutions, and relax, and visit friends and family that may live some way away. There’s no need to do anything, because people have spent vast amounts of money on presents and there’s usually plenty of left-over food and drink in the home. No wonder the shops plan sales for this time, just to get the cash tills ringing again. This in-between time is often an opportunity to take
stock of your situation. To review the past and look forward to the future, to make plans for the future. This is traditionally when people contemplate diets, make plans to join an exercise class, update a CV, give up smoking, and try a month (or more) without alcohol. Though no one wants to move over Christmas, plenty of people decide to sell their home in January. They, literally, want to move on. We live in between the past and the future, and often it can be difficult to be satisfied with what we’ve got and where we are. Perhaps part of grasping contentment arises from understanding that life itself is temporary, and fleeting; every circumstance – good and bad – is temporary. Things might change overnight, for any of us. For many people suddenly on their own, Christmas can be a painful time of year. A study by Shelter found that, of working families in England, nearly 40% of them would not be able to cover housing costs for more than a month in the event of job loss. As we get older one Christmas seems to follow fast on the heels of the last. One of the things we can do in this in-between time this year is to be grateful for whatever it is we do have, and to choose what is important and what is not. This is a time to realise that our most valuable commodity is not our money, but our time. Unlike a bank statement, we can never know exactly how much time we’ve got left, so it’s a good idea to spend it wisely on things that are everlasting – for example, building a legacy of good will and kindness to others, and investing time in relationships with friends and family. There are plenty of opportunities at Community Wise for you to enlarge your life in 2018: three different regular exercise groups, dance groups, singing, meals, creative activities, learning opportunities, and friendship opportunities – spending time with people. This year the shop Wise Buys at Community Wise closes from 22nd December until 2nd January. The break allows the dedicated team of volunteers a well-deserved rest. The people of Old Town and Eastbourne give generously to Wise Buys all year round and, even though the shop is shut, donations will still be accepted during this period. The in-between time might be a good opportunity to clear out old toys and clothing to make way for the new, and, as they are recycled at very low cost to new individuals and families, to invest in the community by passing on your no-longer-needed but pre-loved goods to others. Thank you.

WHY Does This Programme Get Results?
PELVIC FLOOR FITNESS, CORE RESTORATION & WELLNESS FOR EVERY WOMAN
Is 2018 the year that you take control of your Pelvic Floor, return to jumping/ running/sneezing with confidence? Is 2018 the year that you finally address that nagging low back pain or get a better stronger core and tummy after your babies? If YES, then read on! Enjoy 6 wonderful weeks of movement, nutritional guidance and education regarding your Pelvic Floor, Core and women’s fitness/wellness at whatever life phase you’re in on this unique Holistic Core Restore® ‘Everywoman‘ programme. The programme is adaptable for virtually all women and is designed to ‘bring you back home’ to your amazing body with your Pelvic and Core Health at the centre of our focus.
This Programme is for you if you answer ‘YES’ to any of these questions… l Are
you a woman who wants to have a stronger and better functioning Pelvic Floor that does its job when you jump, sneeze, cough, laugh or run?
l Are
you a woman who wants to reconnect to your Core and have a better looking and stronger tummy?
In short, those ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises also known as Kegels simply aren’t the whole story. Your Pelvic Floor and Core muscles don’t exist in isolation and separate to the movements of your whole body and your breath. And so for your Pelvic Floor and your entire Core to work as it was designed to, we need to re-introduce it to the rest of your body and get it to do its job in time with your breath and movement.
What are the next steps once you have signed up? When you’re sure you want to join the programme you’ll be asked to complete our online HCR® Pre-Screening to ensure that this safe and ‘conservative’ exercise-based programme is right for you. You’ll then connect with your Coach, Denise to discuss the Pre-Screening and go through a few simple tests for your Core Function with a 1:1 screening/meeting.
l Are
you a woman who has ‘lower back pain’ issues and been told is due to a ‘weak Core’ and so you need an easy-to-do and time-efficient exercise programme that actually works?
You’ll receive your HCR® Client Education Booklet and the key items of fitness kit required for the course and begin your journey to awesome Pelvic and Core Health and function.
l Have
There are a maximum of 12 places on each course, so if you truly feel this programme is for you, please don’t delay in getting in touch for more information. Sessions held at Community Wise, Ocklynge Road, Old Town, Eastbourne BN21 1PY
you been performing your ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises fairly regularly but still don’t have the confidence in your Pelvic Floor you think you should?
l Do
you have a small Diastasis Recti (Tummy Gap) after Pregnancy (no matter how long ago) that you want to heal?
l Do
you want to return to jogging, running or more athletic activities but lack confidence because of small leaks?

We are on a hunt for Basses and Tenors this year, our 28th year of performing. Have you got the voice we are looking for? Our Choir needs you! CONCENTUS CONCERT – A CHRISTMAS CRACKER!
Concentus, Eastbourne’s choir ‘with a heart’ is promising to produce for it’s audience a ‘cracking good time’ at the Concentus Sings Christmas concert in Eastbourne on Saturday 16th December at 4pm at St Saviour’s Church, South Street. The Choir will also be performing this concert in Seaford on 9th December at St Leonard’s Parish Church. Please see the advert for further details. Never ones to take much of a summer holiday, this choir has been out and about singing at every opportunity. At the end of their highly acclaimed summer concerts in June, the choir featured at the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Hampden Park. Unfortunately, the rains fell in deluge form that dampened the day but not Concentus’ spirits. Onward! Concentus sang at the bandstand at the ever popular Songs of Praise where they ‘sang out’ for sun cream and hats in the baking sunshine of that day rather than for brollys! Before meeting back for winter rehearsals, choir members sang their hearts out for John Rutter, the revered composer, when he arrived in Eastbourne to teach at a brilliant ‘singing together day’ for local choirs. A very busy summer indeed!
how they had come to be there, most of them replied that they had seen and heard the choir at one of the Concentus Sings in Summer Concerts last June and wanted to belong themselves to such a great and friendly group! So, Concentus extends a very warm and open invitation to you too to come along and ‘join’ the choir when they perform their Concentus Sings Christmas programme this December. Get yourself a ticket or buy one on the door. Come and hear the energy of Concentus in two beautiful church buildings. Their programme includes both sacred and secular offerings as they present diverse pieces from The Holy City to A Cowboy Carol, The Ground to Jingle Bells, Down by the Riverside to And Then Shall Your Light Break Forth. You will hear the full choir, small groups and solos. You will hear the organ tremble and the keyboard rock! A view from the Potting Shed
Until fairly recently in history, certainly up to Victorian times, people could never be certain they would safely survive the harsh winter. So they developed rituals and displays to help them get through the darker days. One such symbolic display of hope was the Christmas wreath. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. Now we hang them on our doors and use them as table centrepieces because they look wonderfully opulent and festive. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. This became fused with ‘wrethe’ from middle English, which means a twisted band or ring of leaves. At this bleak time of year, it’s traditional to use evergreens and other brightly coloured flowers, foliage, or fruits to adorn a wreath. In past times the addition of expensive ic o op f

Making a wreath is fun and relatively easy. You can make a simple and cheap evergreen circle, or push the boat out and create an elaborate bauble ring. You can buy a ring of flower-arrangers’ foam. Soak it in tepid water, and then stick sprigs of evergreen foliage from the garden, flowers, berries, dried fruits, nuts, and bows into it using wire. Or you can make your own base by taking a ring of wire and covering it in moss or hay. This will need to be held in place using thinner gauge wire. You can then wire in foliage and decorations. I will just warn you about holly though; working with it can be a painful experience so wear gloves and maybe have a box of plasters handy! If you want to try something different you can use a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, threaded popcorn and cranberries, or woven red and yellow dogwood cut from your garden and interweaved with battery-operated lights. Use your gardener’s imagination. Happy Christmas gardening. Rachael Leverton

Rosemary is ideal for putting into a wreath, with its fragrance and its ability to bend into shape. Native to the Mediterranean, it is a woody evergreen with needle-like leaves and blue, purple, pink or white flowers. The name originates from the Latin words for dew (ros) and sea (marinus) – dew of the sea. The shrub became known as the ‘Rose of Mary’ when, according to myth, the virgin Mary spread her blue cloak over a white rosemary bush as she rested and the flowers turned blue. It was even sacred to ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. Rosemary has many uses from flavouring food to pest control in the garden, decorations and tea. It will grow in pots or in the garden, can be shaped or used as a hedge. It can grow large so pruning is essential and cuttings can be propagated easily.
and rare fruits such as pomegranates indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations were taken down, the edible parts would be eaten and the bounty of summer could be enjoyed in the depth of winter.

Local writer wins award in international competition
Ruth Figgest from Eastbourne is one of just ten writers highly commended in this year’s prestigious Bridport Prize short story competition for her story ‘The Cockerel’.
The story was selected from over 3,300 entries by short story judge Peter Hobbs who said; ‘good writers get the weight and precision of descriptions exactly right – they shy away from vagueness’. He continued, ‘You look for signs of life, for language that has a texture, sentences that have a rhythm. Usually its obvious from the opening lines’.
Ruth Figgest is CEO of a charity which runs a community centre in Eastbourne. She has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Sussex and was one of the winners of the Bridport prize in 2012. Her stories were previously shortlisted for the prize in 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2016. Another of her stories was shortlisted for the Mslexia short story competition in 2011. In October 2013, Ruth’s short story ‘The Coffin Gate’ was broadcast on Radio 4. In her spare time, Ruth teaches creative writing and belongs to writing groups in Brighton and Newhaven. The characters in ‘The Cockerel’ and the content of this story form part of her novel, Magnetism, published by Myriad Editions: myriadeditions.com. The Bridport Prize based in Bridport, Dorset, is one of the most prestigious open writing competitions in the English language with categories in poetry, short stories, flash fiction – stories of 250 words or less – and the Peggy Chapman-Andrews Award for a first novel, named in honour of the Prize’s founder. Established in 1973, and with over £18,000 in prize money to be won annually, the competition attracts entries from across the globe. This year almost 10,000 writers from 74 countries competed for one of the 34 winner and highly commended awards. The Bridport Prize is the flagship project of Bridport Arts Centre in Dorset, UK and the competition raises vital funds for the Arts Centre’s work each year.

A History of Christmas Decorations
Every year we go with the children to choose a new Christmas tree decoration. We don’t do themed trees in our house so our annual tree is a history of the kids’ eclectic and often eccentric tastes down the years. Traditional inherited hand blown glass ornaments nestle alongside a plastic gingerbread man, a gaudy fairy in striped tights, a robot, a festive dachshund, and a host of other unlikely characters. Every year is a delight of discovery as my teens and preteens unpack, reminisce and tease each other over their past choices. But where did the idea of decorations originate and how did they evolve into what they’ve now become? Tinsel originated in Germany in the early 1600s. Back then it was made from real shredded silver. Tinsel makers hammered the silver until it was thin, then cut it into strips. It was so popular that tinsel machines were invented to keep up with demand. Clearly silver was a little expensive and eventually the plastic variety took over.
solstice, as a reminder that spring would come again. The Christians adopted them later. The tradition of Christmas trees seems to have originated about 1,000 years ago in Northern Europe. They were often hung upside down from the rafters. In modern times improved manufacturing techniques have allowed for the production of artificial trees which can be very difficult to tell from the real thing! In Victorian times, Christmas trees were decorated with candles. In 1895, an American man, Ralph Morris, was so concerned about the fire hazard of candles and Christmas trees that he invented the first electric Christmas lights, which are similar to those still in use today. Over the years there have been glass and plastic variations of reindeers, stars, fruit, butterflies, birds and even festive dachshunds, but the debate still rages about whether there should be an angel or a star on top of the tree. Merry Christmas. Tracey Anderson
We have the Germans to thank for baubles. They were invented in the 1840s by Hans Greiner. His original glass fruit and nuts developed into beautiful ornate ornaments which so charmed Queen Victoria that she brought them back to Britain. As they were all hand-crafted the first, baubles were very expensive. Improvements in plastic manufacturing meant that cheaper versions became available, and baubles became available to the masses. The green fir tree was originally used by Pagans and Christians to celebrate winter. Pagans used branches of the fir tree to decorate their homes during the winter
