December 2013 and January 2014 – Issue 25

Hello...

...and welcome to the Christmas and New Year issue of the Eastbourne Old Town Crier! Firstly I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has given me feedback on the new look magazine. The general consensus is that the style and format is a good one! It was also great to meet some of you when I was out delivering last October in the pouring rain! I’ll be back on the streets again at the beginning of December to leave extra copies in some “pick-up spots” – mostly café’s, businesses and shops in the Old Town. Thank you too to everyone who has contacted me with contributions – in this issue you may discover a few things going on locally that you perhaps didn’t know about! Do send me more articles and details of clubs, organisations or just get-together groups that you belong to – we all want to know what’s going on in and around the Old Town! The deadline for the next issue is Tuesday 7th January, so get scribbling! Finally I’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year. See you again in 2014!

The Lounge – a new Teen Café in Old Town Stage fighting, drama workshops, ballroom dancing, photographic and art workshops, band jam-sessions plus a wide range of Club Nights; these are just some of the activities you can find at The Lounge. The Lounge is a new and exciting venue for teenagers, based in the lower hall of St Elisabeth’s Church in Old Town. The Lounge opened its doors in the newly refurbished venue earlier this year as a café for young people to meet with their friends, show off their musical and artistic talents, and generally have a good time. The Lounge was the idea of local parents who wanted a safe place for their children, and their friends, to meet, let off steam and pursue their interests. The club was set up with the help of grants from a number of bodies, including the Youthbank and the Old Town Councillors’ devolved budget. It has already attracted a good number of members who come along every Saturday to meet their friends, chill out and enjoy the wide range of activities. Club Nights run every Saturday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm except on Film Nights, when the under 15s have their own film from 5.00pm to 7pm. The workshops run from 2pm onwards on Saturdays and there is even a recording facility available too. In December the members will also have the opportunity to display and sell their own artistic creations during Open House weekend, and there’s even talk of recording their own charity CD single for Christmas.

6

But what do the kids themselves think? Max, (12) says, “I really like The Lounge because I play drums, bass and guitar, and I get the chance to do it here without any pressure.” Izzy (15) says, “I like the fact that it gives you your own voice, to be your own person. Everyone’s treated equally. We’re all a family now, and nobody judges you. I come along here and I can sing without worrying about what anyone else might think.” Café nights are regarded by the kids both as a great place to chill. “You can get drinks, savoury and sweet snacks, play on the Wii or other games, or just chill out on the beanbags,” says Izzy. The Lounge is a club and there is an annual membership fee which gives users access to different levels of activity within the club. But it’s also open to non-members who can pay on the door for club nights – a good way for Max and others to introduce their friends to The Lounge. “I tell my friends about what’s going on, they come along, like what we do and then they tell others who also come along. The more the merrier!” Izzy says that she tells her friends that the Lounge is “Just as much fun as going to parties, we’re all friendly and it’s also in a safe environment. You get the chance to dance and generally let your hair down. It’s quite fun to have somewhere to come along to and relax as well.”

So if you are a teenager who wants to meet up with people your own age and explore some of the creative opportunities available there then why not check what’s happening at www. thelounge.org.uk or just drop by one Saturday evening? What is the Winter Solstice?

SBG Computers of East Sussex

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice occurs when the “top half ” of the Earth tilts away from the Sun at its most extreme angle. This gives us the longest night and shortest day of the year. It normally falls on 21st December, and from this point on, the days will begin to lengthen until the Summer Solstice on 21st June.

A family business Est. 1999 Supporting and servicing all your PC needs

The word “solstice” comes from the Latin phrase for “sun stands still”. This is because the sun appears to rise and set in the same two places for several days in a row. Cultures through the ages have marked the Solstice and celebrated the triumph of light over dark.

Massive prehistoric monuments such as Stonehenge were built to align with the Winter Solstice sunrise. The ancient Romans had a seven-day festival called Saturnalia, when everything would be reversed – men would dress as women and masters dressed as servants. People decorated their houses with greenery, lit candles and gave presents. Celtic druids gave pieces of mistletoe as a blessing. They also began the tradition of the Yule log, which was burned to conquer the darkness and bring luck for the year ahead. Many people celebrate the Solstice today, and it’s interesting to see how many of the customs have become part of our Christmas festivities. By Alex Albrighton

EASTBOURNE’S HIDDEN GEM

the Under Ground Theatre Eastbourne is renowned for its range of theatres. But did you know that tucked away below the main library (near the station) is a theatre that’s been described as the town’s “hidden gem”. It’s the Under Ground Theatre, or UGT, run by volunteers, and receiving no local authority funding. Its beginnings can be traced back to 1987 – and the closure of another small theatre, the Tivoli, on Seaside. Local people who wanted an alternative to the big venues formed the Eastbourne Arts Centre. Two years later, their search for a home ended when the Library Theatre, as it was then known, became available. In October 1989, the keys were handed over to the Arts Centre Group, by then a charitable trust, initially on a six-month lease. And the Under Ground Theatre is still

there as the “home of the Eastbourne Arts Centre”, celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2014. The UGT stages a remarkable variety of events – including topflight jazz, professional drama, chamber-music, films, and more. And the programme continues to expand. Art is exhibited in its foyer throughout the year. Family shows are back in the schedule – which now also includes talks by local societies, open stage nights and Songwriters’ Circle sessions. Also: the Saturday coffee mornings with live music, that for years were held just once a month, now take place every single weekend. Costs are daunting, and include a considerable sum in rent to the county council. However, the UGT derives its income not only from the box-office, but also from the sale of refreshments and drinks, from donations and a membership scheme, and from hiring out the venue to local societies and performers. In addition, the UGT has recently received a lottery grant for the first time, and has had some sponsorship from solicitors Hart Reade. The intention remains to bring to Eastbourne the sort of entertainment that is not available in the big theatres, and at affordable prices. Indeed, many events are completely free. Any profits are used to finance a rolling programme of improvements – to benefit both audiences and performers. These are exciting times at the UGT, and the theatre would love to hear from anyone who would like to join its volunteers. You’re invited to drop in for a chat at one of the free events, such as the Saturday morning music. Alternatively, you can phone Simon on 01323 734538. Why not help polish up this “hidden gem”?

Eastbourne Gilbert and Sullivan Society Eastbourne Gilbert and Sullivan Society is proud to present, as its next production, The Pirates of Penzance which will be performed at the Devonshire Park Theatre from Tuesday, 6th May to Saturday, 10th May 2014. The Pirates of Penzance is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. The opera’s official premiere was at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City on 31 December 1879, where the show was well received by both audiences and critics. Its London debut was on 3 April 1880, at the Opera Comique, where it ran for a very successful 363 performances, having already been playing successfully for over three months in New York. Pirates was the only Gilbert and Sullivan opera to have its official premiere in the United States. At the time, American law offered no copyright protection to foreigners. After their previous opera, H.M.S. Pinafore, was a hit in London, over a hundred American companies quickly mounted unauthorised productions, often taking considerable liberties with the text and paying no royalties to the creators. Gilbert and Sullivan hoped to forestall further “copyright piracy” by mounting the first production of their next opera in America, before others could copy it, and by delaying publication of the score and libretto. Pirates was the fifth Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration and introduced the much-parodied Major-General’s Song. The opera was performed for a century by the D’Oyly

Carte Opera Company in Britain and many other opera companies and repertory companies worldwide. The story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on 29 February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. His apprenticeship indentures state that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic’s only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully. The Society is always looking to encourage the influx of new members, of all ages and genders but if you just happen to be male and possess a tenor voice, you will be especially enthusiastically greeted. If you have a penchant for harmony singing, coupled with a modest sense of rhythm and movement for any choreography that may be involved (no previous experience of either is necessary and will certainly be no bar to membership), again, you will be warmly welcomed. If you should also happen to possess an acute sense of fun and an appreciation of topsy-turvy silliness, then so much the better! All persons interested in joining, therefore, should contact the Hon. Secretary: Sue Davies on 01323 767193 or davies_ronald1@sky.com Auditions for potential principal roles will take place in December and rehearsals proper will commence at the beginning of January. For more information kindly visit the Society’s website at www.eastbournegands.com Photo from The Sorcerer – May 2013. Constance (Lucy Sarsfield) and the Notary (John Kimberley) share their own mis-matched love with the chorus.

Neurofit in Eastbourne Eastbourne Neuro Physio is one of four clinics in the country to introduce Neurofit, a pioneering rehabilitation programme developed by neurophysiotherapist, Nikki Penny. Following a stroke, clients often feel a change in their movement and have a fear of physical exertion. However it is vital that weakened muscles are strengthened and the cardiovascular system is challenged in order to maintain and improve function. Neurofit is a progressive training programme, empowering people with a neurological condition to challenge their physical fitness. The Neurofit concept is about keeping numbers small, providing individual attention and addressing specific physical goals. We foster a fun, friendly exercise environment. Our Neurofit group utilises functional positions and patterns of movement to improve the individual’s strength, stamina, balance and flexibility. The group commenced in April 2013 and is run by specialist neurological physiotherapist Maria O’Hara and experienced brain injury rehabilitation support worker and fitness instructor, Claire Robinson. We are now looking to develop other groups and it would be great to hear from anybody with a neurological condition wishing to improve their fitness. Our classes can be designed for wheelchair users as well as those with more mobility. We hold our 1-hour classes on a Monday at the Victoria Drive Bowls Club, Old Town, Eastbourne. There is ample parking, good disabled access and toilets. Please call Maria at Eastbourne Neuro Physio on 01323 648202/07742 544897 or Claire 01323 729959/07803 004002.

A view from the Potting Shed

House plants give such a wonderful display, and are sure to last longer than a bunch of flowers. Choose from large flowering cyclamen, brightly coloured azaleas, sweetly scented jasmine and of course the traditional poinsettia. Oh, and don’t forget about bulbs, paperwhite narcissus are synonymous with Christmas, and forced hyacinths too, but I can appreciate that their strong scent is best savoured in spring. Before we go on to the care of houseplants, let’s just clear one thing up, houseplants hate houses! Dry central heating, low light levels and draughts are all things houseplants really don’t like, as most of these plants come from very humid, tropical parts of the world. The best way to ensure your flowers bloom for longer and your leaves don’t go brown at the tips, is to ensure the right conditions for survival. And finally, don’t get emotionally attached, think of flowering houseplants as a medium term bunch of flowers or a Christmas decoration, and after flowering if they look a little jaded, return them to the compost heap in the sky – I don’t think there’s any worse house plant tragedy than a straggly poinsettia in July with three stunted yellow leaves. Poinsettias are popular because they look wonderful, but here’s a little word of warning, be careful not to get the sap of a poinsettia on your skin as they can cause

Have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year. Lee Bestall

to d o

It seems such a shame that after all the effort, you go and kill the poor thing after just one week of taking custody. This year will be different though, because whether giving or receiving a houseplant this festive yule-tide, help is at hand with my top tips for keeping them alive (until New Year at least!).

irritation – always keep them out of reach of pets and children.

what

S

urviving a modern day Christmas can be challenge enough for humans, but just imagine how difficult it is if you’re a plant. You’ve been reluctantly forced to flower, grown in a light controlled polytunnel and you’ve been force fed with growth stunting hormones to ensure you’re not too straggly when flowering on Mrs Cratchit’s table...and here’s me feeling sorry for the turkey!

DECEMBER & JANUARY

House Plants...

3 Avoid placing house plants in a draughty location such as windowsills, or near to a frequently opened door, (they won’t appreciate the large fluctuations in temperature). 3 Avoid hotspots, such as in front of or above a radiator or fire. 3 Water plants by plunging them into a bowl of tepid (not cold) water, and then allowing the water to fully drain out from the pot before returning to its location. 3 Azaleas like humid conditions, so stand these on a tray of gravel filled with water, (but ensure plants are not sat in water). 3 Create a plant area where groups of plants can be stood together, this will create more humidity 3 Avoid direct sunlight. 3 Ensure the compost never dries out or is too saturated, water little and often. 3 Remove faded flowers to prevent disease and to promote flowering.

And after Christmas...

3Prune apple and pear trees. 3Recycle your Christmas tree or shred it for mulch. 3Dig over soil in the vegetable garden. 3Plant new fruit bushes if the ground is not frozen 3Continue taking hardwood cuttings of deciduous trees, shrubs and currant bushes. 3Buy or order vegetable seeds and seed potatoes. 3Cut the old leaves from hellebores to reveal their flowers. 3Plant bare-root roses, trees, shrubs and hedging.

Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail Some of you may be familiar with the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail, which was launched back in 2012 by Seaford gardener, Geoff Stonebanks, who regularly opens his own garden at Driftwood in Bishopstone for this and other charities. Well, so successful was the trail in 2012, that Geoff managed to persuade “The One Show’s” gardening presenter, Christine Walkden to become the patron of the trail. From the nine gardens from Saltdean to Seaford in 2012, it extended to Eastbourne in 2013 with a total of 21 gardens. The three gardens that opened in Eastbourne were in Cranborn Avenue, Mill Road and Southfields Road. They proved very popular, contributing over £800 to the grand total raised (£5,200) across all

21 gardens. All the monies raised went directly to the new cancer support centre in Brighton. Geoff runs the Driftwood Fundraising Group, which organizes the trail and over the last 2 years has raised over £12,000 for Macmillan. Rob Moon, the Area Fundraising Manager for the South East, said on being presented with a cheque for £8,900 from Geoff in September, “Macmillan wants to make sure that no one in Sussex faces cancer alone and we can only do so through the generous support of the public. I want to thank Geoff and everyone involved with the Driftwood Fundraising Group for their fantastic support. The money raised will go towards The Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre Appeal.” So, do you want to join the trail in 2014 and help raise money for this great charity? Two gardens in Eastbourne have already signed up to join the trail – Derek and Iris Brooks are opening their Japanese themed garden in Willoughby Crecsent and Pat Latham her coastal garden in Cranborn Avenue. A further 14 have signed up from Brighton to Seaford. The trail will take place over the weekend of the 26th and 27th July 2014. Full details can be found at www. macmillantrail.co.uk or phone Geoff on 01323 899296.

Christmas by the Glass Christmas Day in our house starts with a leisurely family brunch, complete with a cheeky little cocktail. Cocktails at breakfast might not suit everyone, and I certainly wouldn’t recommend them as part of your usual healthy diet, but at Christmas I feel I can indulge without guilt. I would suggest a Bloody Mary as a good accompaniment to a late breakfast.

Bloody Mary

Ingredients: Ice cubes, vodka (double shot), ½ lemon (juice only), 6 dashes Worcestershire sauce, 3 dashes Tabasco sauce, 150ml/5fl oz tomato juice, pinch salt and freshly ground black pepper. Method: Place the ice into a tall glass and add the vodka. Add the lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce and tomato juice. Stir well. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve straightaway. Before lunch, it’s nice to serve champagne with a festive twist.

Champagne with Cranberries

Ingredients: Champagne (or any good quality sparkling wine), dried cranberries. Method: Simply pop 5 dried cranberries into each glass and pour the champagne over. The cranberries “dance” in the bubbles and look very Christmassy. And finally, no Christmas Day is complete without a tumbler or two of mulled wine.

Mulled Wine Ingredients: 400ml/14fl oz red wine (Shiraz is fantastic), 400ml/14 fl oz water, 400ml/14 fl oz good quality orange juice, 80ml / 2½ fl oz brandy, 4 tbsp dark brown sugar, ½ tsp ground ginger, ½ tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp nutmeg, 3 cardamom pods, clementine, 6 cloves (to pierce the clementine)

22

Method: Make up a spice bag using muslin or a piece of thin cotton with the ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom. Place the red wine, water, brandy, orange juice and sugar in a large pan; add the spice bag and clove-studded clementine. Heat slowly and simmer over a very low heat for at least 30 minutes. Serve with mince pies in front of the fire to round off a perfect Christmas Day. By Sarah Davey

FEEDING THE BIRDS THIS WINTER Super Suet

Sussex Wildlife Trust is encouraging people to feed the birds this winter. By November, nature’s larder of nuts and berries starts to dwindle and birds really benefit from a helping hand to see them through the colder months, when they are at their most vulnerable.

Jess Price, WildCall Officer, says “Garden birds need to eat up to a third of their own body weight every day in winter just to keep warm through the night. They need food which is high in energy and protein. Saturated fats such as suet and lard are ideal and can be mixed with bird seed or nuts for a tasty treat.” But Jess wants people to know it’s very important not to use left over fat from roasting tins which is bad for birds; meat juices can smear their feathers, may contain salt and provide a breeding ground for bacteria. Vine House Farm donates 5% of all their bird food sales to Sussex Wildlife Trust to help them with their vital conservation work in the county. www.vinehousefarm.co.uk Photo: Great spotted woodpecker, blue tit and great tits

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH It is well documented that one in four of us may suffer mental distress at sometime during our life. Whether someone is experiencing anxiety and stress, depression, addiction, phobias, panic attacks or trauma, having some understanding about these conditions can often help. I hope therefore that this series of articles each month will enhance understanding of these distressing conditions, starting with “Stress”. STRESS Stress results from a build-up of mental and/or physical pressures to a level that we find overwhelming. The amount and type of stress we can stand will vary from individual to individual – for instance, one person may get a buzz from giving a talk to hundreds of people whereas someone else will be a nervous wreck in similar circumstances. We may all have to go through different stresses in a lifetime – such as bereavement, job loss, relationship breakdown, serious illness, or the demands of caring for children or sick relatives. We have to cope with challenging life changes, such as leaving home for the first time, taking on new responsibilities at work or settling down with a new partner. Even when these are pleasant developments, they can still take a mental and physical toll on us. When lots of little stresses and some big ones happen in a short period of time, we may lose our ability to cope well. If we feel defeated by all we have to do, and lack drive and energy, that is stress. Stress is the modern-day effect of an evolutionary mechanism known as ‘fight or flight’, designed to save our distant ancestors from dangers in the wild. For instance, when under physiological stress, our muscles may tense,

blood pressure soar, the heart race and the chest hurt, as breathing becomes shallow and quick; saliva may dry up and we might sweat and shake. When these bodily changes took place for our ancestors, it was because they faced a major threat, such as a wild boar attack, and they needed to gear up to run for it or to fight for their lives. Once they had taken action, and survived, all the physiological arousal would quickly subside. But in modern times, it is rarely a wild boar that makes us feel threatened. More often, it may be an overdemanding boss or not having enough control over our work (stress is now the most common cause of longterm sickness absence) or the demands of taking a sick relative to regular hospital appointments while trying to hold down a full-time job. The stress doesn’t end and so the physiological effects don’t ebb. That’s why we get physical symptoms from severe stress, such as disturbed sleep and ailments such as frequent migraines, backache, angina, skin eruptions, bowel problems, stomach cramps or high blood pressure. And we commonly feel highly anxious or depressed. All these symptoms are warnings that important emotional needs are not being met (maybe our lives feel lonely, too demanding or meaningless) and that something has to change, to bring the harmful stress levels down. To lower stress levels, human givens practitioners can show people how to relax and encourage people to find ways to reduce their stress. Psychotherapy from the human givens approach combines proven therapeutic techniques with the most up-to-date psychological knowledge to relieve emotional distress and help you move on with your life as quickly as possible. Next month the focus will be on “Anxiety”. Lynda Bryer (HGDip) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. The Way of Winter The 3 months of winter Are for closing and storing Water freezes, Earth cracks. One goes to bed early; one gets up late. Everything must be done according to the light of the sun, As if buried, as if hidden One must avoid the cold And seek the heat; Not let anything escape Through the layers of the skin for fear of losing all the Qi (energy) To go countercurrent would injure the kidneys, Causing, in spring, impotence and deficiency If only we could get up late in the winter! With our hectic lifestyles it is difficult to care for ourselves according to the seasons like the ancient Chinese did in this passage, however there are ways in which we can apply health promotion today, according traditional Chinese Philosophy. Each season pertains to the energy of a specific organ of the body and in winter we look to the kidneys. The kidneys are very important in Chinese philosophy, so much so that they are referred to as the “root of life. In winter particularly we should be protecting the lower back from the cold, by avoiding short tops, wearing a vest, maybe tying a scarf around the lower back or investing in a Haramaki, especially for the job. The kidney energy can be specifically depleted by chronic and profuse sweating, diarrhoea and smoking. Generally kidney energy weakens through age, long term anxiety, chronic illness, overwork, excessive sexual activity and hereditary weakness. Traditional Chinese medicine encompasses diet and exercise specifically for the kidneys which can be followed in the winter months:

Diet: Bitter and salty are the particular tastes for winter. Hearty warm soups, whole grains and roasted nuts, dried foods, small dark beans (mung beans, kidney beans), seaweeds and steamed winter greens all fortify the kidneys in winter. As the kidney meridian, (the channel where energy flows along) connects to the ears, the sounds of cooking in the kitchen are particularly cheering at this time of year. Exercise: The Kidney Shake Stand in a relaxed position, feet hip width apart, knees slightly bent. Now make a fist (thumb tucked in first then fingers folded over). Place the backs of the hands on the lower back and gently massage the area by bending and straightening the knees slightly and repetitively (adopting a shaking style). The Spinal Twist Now adopting the same standing position as before, twist at the waist, allowing the arms to be relaxed and to freely move away from the body as you twist around.
