...and welcome to the February and March issue the Eastbourne Old Town Crier! Happy New Year to you all...better late than never, I guess? I hope you all survived the Christmas festivities and are now back on track and getting to grips with the new year? Finally the nights are starting to draw out and the days are getting longer, new shoots are sprouting and love is in the air – don’t forget it’s Valentines Day on February 14th! It’s also St David’s Day on March 1st, Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day on the 4th, followed by Ash Wednesday marking the beginning of Lent, St Patrick’s Day on the 17th and finally it’s Mother’s Day on the 30th. Make sure you put it on your calendars! Please continue to send me your articles and news about the clubs, organisations and groups that you belong to – we’d all like to find out what’s going on in Eastbourne and the Old Town. Volunteers Needed at Seven Sisters Sussex Wildlife Trust is looking for volunteers to lend a helping hand with children visiting its education centre at Seven Sisters Country Park near Seaford throughout 2014. If you like working with children and are keen to share your enjoyment of the countryside with others then why not consider joining the team? Regular commitment is appreciated, but this could be as little as one day each month or as often as five days a week during busy periods, with most of the visits scheduled for the summer months. You don’t have to be an expert but some knowledge or an interest in wildlife is useful. However, you do need to enjoy being outside, as most of your time will be spent out-of-doors.
the education team also runs holiday clubs and family events, which often require volunteer support. An introductory morning is being held at the Pump Barn, Seven Sisters Country Park on Tuesday 11th February, 10am –12.30pm. Education volunteering is subject to two satisfactory references and a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service). If you are interested and would like further information or to book a place on our introductory morning please contact our Volunteer Administrator, Liz Francis – email: lizfrancis@sussexwt. org.uk or telephone 01273 497562.
Up to 100 pupils from the same school can visit Seven Sisters Country Park on a school trip. During the day, the children, aged between 5 and 11 years old, take part in different activities all based around the national curriculum but with strong wildlife themes. Activities include woodland studies, pond dipping, river studies and rock pooling down on the beach beneath the spectacular chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters. As well as providing school trips for primary schools, Seven Sisters is a popular venue for secondary school groups including GCSE students. Throughout the year

Springtime Showcase
at St Elisabeth’s
You may have thought the building at the top of the hill on Victoria Drive was just a place of worship used on Sundays. But St Elisabeth’s Church and Centre for Community is much more than that with the various rooms in the building being used seven days a week for a whole range of groups and events. The building has a long association with local arts groups, both visual and performing arts. Indeed the building in which the church now meets was originally designed as a fully functioning arts centre – including a stage, dressing rooms and a projection room for films. One developing strand is in the area of arts in the community and 2103 saw the appointment of two Community Arts Workers, Fenya Sharkey and Clem Jackson, heading up a new initiative – Arts @ St E’s. At present a number of arts groups meet in the centre, working on both visual arts (painting, quilting, photography etc.) and performing arts. Fenya and Clem are keen to see the community arts activity increase and welcome any ideas for events and exhibitions. They can be contacted through the church office (01323 430667). St Elisabeth’s Church is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2014 and a number of events are being planned throughout the year. One of the first is Springtime Showcase, a concert designed to showcase three of the musical arts groups who meet regularly at the building: Eastbourne Gilbert & Sullivan Society, The Eastbourne Rock Choir, and the very talented young people who meet at the arts café – The Lounge.

Clem says, “The concert provides an opportunity for the people of Old Town and beyond to come along and get a glimpse of some of the activity taking place in the building on days other than Sunday and will hopefully encourage more people to get involved with the community arts projects available.” The Springtime Showcase concert takes place at St Elisabeth’s on Saturday 22nd March at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 in advance and £7.50 on the door (children and students £2.50 and £3.50). To book your tickets call the church office on 01323 430667, leaving your name and number on the answerphone, or email clemajackson@googlemail.com with your contact details.

CARS FOR CASH INITIATIVE FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK An East Sussex charity is asking the public to donate old cars as part of a novel fund raising drive to boost its vital work countywide. Seaford Cancer Research UK raises money to help develop treatments through research. Over the past few years major advances have been developed to assist people with their recovery. Although there is not a cure for all types of cancer, with your help we can help to finance further research and maybe a cure. To accelerate its fund raising work, it has now joined up with Giveacar, a non-profit social enterprise which collects unwanted and unused cars for charity. Regardless of their condition, cars are collected free-of-charge nationwide by Giveacar then sold through an online auction or disposed of at an authorised treatment facility. Profits from the sale are then donated to a charity of the car owner’s choice. Even if the banger is scrapped, it still nets the selected good cause between £40 and £160. If you nominate Seaford Cancer Research, every penny raised will go to Cancer Research to help with research into relief or cure for cancer sufferers. There have been rapid advancements over the last 20 years. Many car owners want an easy and completely free way to get rid of their old car. Giveacar will help them to do this in a legal and environmentally friendly way. The scheme is intended to discourage those irresponsible owners who may consider abandoning their cars, spoiling the appearance of the local environment and also costing local taxpayers’ money to remove and dispose of it. For more details or to donate a car, visit www.giveacar. co.uk or call the Giveacar Team on 020 7736 4242, quoting Seaford Cancer Research UK as your chosen charity.

Take to the slopes
Join the Olympians and try a winter sport holiday.
From 7 – 23 February, we will be gripped with Olympic fever once again as the 2014 Winter Olympics take place in Sochi, Russia. Thousands of competitors will don their thermals to take part in 15 different winter sports. If you’ve ever fancied having a go yourself, the variety of resorts and activities now available means that there’s never been a better time to start. Skiing has been a favourite winter sport for many years, but snowboarding is rapidly gaining in popularity. Which is best for the beginner? It’s easier to get started with skiing, but it will take you longer to get to a high standard. With snowboarding, you need a lot of practice to stay balanced and link your turns together, but once you’ve mastered that, you’re away. Planning your holiday requires careful research. Depending on how far you want to travel, it is possible to ski all year round. The season in Europe and North America runs from December to March/April, depending on the altitude of the resort. If you want to ski during the summer, you should head for the highest Alpine or American peaks, or Southern Hemisphere locations like Argentina, Chile, Australia or New Zealand. Look at a range of resorts and compare their facilities. You’ll need to consider the ability level of everyone in your party and make sure that there are ski runs to match. This is particularly important if you are travelling with children. Some resorts provide a ski-school for children as young as two, otherwise you may want to investigate childcare options. If you’ve never skied before, you will need to organise lessons, which can be taken either in a group or individually. Don’t forget to check out the other activities on offer – both on and off the slopes. For example, you could try night skiing, bobsleigh, ice climbing, dog sledging or snowmobiling. And of course there’s the après ski – make sure there are plenty of restaurants and bars if this is an important part of your holiday. Your choice of accommodation can have a big effect on the price of your holiday. Options include luxurious hotels, B&Bs, chalets, apartments and low-budget hostels.
Another cost to consider is your clothing and equipment. You will need a base-layer, mid-layer, jacket, gloves, goggles and helmet. Unless you are a frequent skier, it makes sense to hire your boots and skis/board. That way you don’t need to worry about transporting, damaging or losing expensive kit. And finally, remember that if you’re desperate to ski and funds are tight, there are several indoor snow centres and dry ski slopes around the UK. So everyone can share the Olympic spirit! UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH Whether someone is experiencing anxiety and stress, depression, addiction, phobias, panic attacks or trauma, having some understanding about these conditions can often help. I hope this month’s article on “Anxiety”will enhance understanding of this distressing condition.
ANXIETY
We all need to experience some degree of anxiety at times - it would be unnatural not to feel any of its symptoms, such as racing pulse, dry mouth, sweatiness and shallow breathing, just before a big speech or exam, for instance - as it helps get us motivated to act. But excessive anxiety causes problems. Excessive anxiety may develop gradually, starting, perhaps, with loneliness after the loss of a loved one; being too shy to make new friends when moving somewhere new; experiencing unwelcome life changes because of chronic illness and pain; or feeling loaded down with too much responsibility - all cases of unmet emotional needs. For some people, anxiety can develop suddenly, after they are caught up in some tragic disaster, such as a fire or a crash, or are the victims of violence, and their lives become ruled by fear. (This is known as post-traumatic stress.) Anxiety may also take the form of obsessions, compulsions, phobias or a nagging feeling of foreboding - all of which are attempts to ward off a sense of threat. Yet, as we know, some people face such circumstances without becoming overly anxious, while others end up almost crippled by anxiety. How we explain the negative events that happen to us has a considerable bearing on whether we are likely to suffer from excessive anxiety. Three particular types of thinking are especially connected with its development and its close partner, depression: how personally people take events (they think everything is their fault or that they didn’t get the job because they weren’t good enough, rather than because the competition was particularly stiff); how pervasive they think the effects will be (if they lose their job, they think everything in their world is going wrong, even though their relationship is still strong and they have their health, good friends, etc); and how permanent
18
(they will never get another job, partner, dream house like that one, etc). People who suffer badly from anxiety also tend to have a lot of negative thoughts running through their minds that they don’t even notice (“I’ll never cope”; “It’s going to be awful”, “no one likes me”) and commonly catastrophise (“I’m going to be late. My boss will sack me!”) Changing negative self-talk and challenging catastrophic thinking help lower stress levels. Another major cause of troublesome anxiety is negative over-imagination. Anxious people tend to spend a lot of time worrying “What if?” coming up with a whole variety of dreadful outcomes for themselves or their loved ones. This keeps them in a constant state of high emotional arousal and can take the extreme forms of phobias or obsessive-compulsive disorders. Learning to use the imagination positively - by calmly rehearsing mentally tried and tested techniques (such as deep breathing and distracting thoughts) for dealing with feared or worrisome situations - is very effective. Calming ourselves down, when anxious, is extremely important because high emotional arousal makes us stupid. We literally can’t think straight and that makes the situation worse. Human givens practitioners can show people how to relax, so that they can bring their own arousal and stress levels down, and how to use their imaginations positively, to rehearse successful outcomes instead of bad ones. They can also help people overcome phobias, panic attacks and traumatic memories quickly and painlessly. And, very importantly, they will encourage people to find ways to reduce their stress and also focus outwards on fulfilling activities (maybe involving the wellbeing of others as well as themselves) - excellent ways of getting their own needs met. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact 01323 897287 or email lynda3hg@hotmail.com

Nutty Valentine Heart Biscuits Preparation time: 30 minutes plus chilling time. Cooking time: 14 – 16 minutes. Makes 20 – 24 sandwich biscuits.
1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional) Raspberry or strawberry jam Icing sugar for dusting Heart-shaped cookiecutters in two sizes; one small, one larger.
Ingredients
6oz / 170g ground almonds or hazelnuts 6oz / 170g plain flour 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 4oz / 115g butter (at room temperature) 31/2oz / 100g caster sugar 1 medium egg
Method
Preheat the oven to 190C / Gas Mark 5, and line two trays with greaseproof paper or a silicone baking mat. Lightly flour the work surface and roll out the first piece of dough to about 1/4 inch / 0.5cm thick. Cut out as many heart-shapes as the dough can fit. Gather up the scraps with the second half of dough, roll out and cut out the cookies. Cut out the centres of half the cookies using a small heart-shaped cutter. Transfer the cookies to the baking sheets and bake for 12 14 minutes or until the cookies are golden, dry, and firm to the touch. These cookies don’t spread so don’t have to be spaced out too far apart. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Heat up some jam in the microwave or on the stove top until it is warm. Spread half to a teaspoon-full of jam on the cookie and place a cookie with a cut-out centre on top. Lightly dust with powdered sugar before serving. If you don’t want the jam to be sprinkled with icing sugar, you can dust the cookie-toppers with the cut-out centres first, then place them on top of the jammy bases before serving.

Mix the ground nuts, flour, cinnamon and salt together in a mixing bowl, set aside. In a large bowl beat the butter and caster sugar together until light and fluffy. In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg with the vanilla and almond extract if using. Beat half the egg mixture into the creamed sugar and butter, then beat in the other half. Add all the dry ingredients and mix gently by hand until all the ingredients have been
used. Divide the dough in half, place both halves in a polythene bag and chill for 2 hours in the fridge (it can be stored in the fridge for 3 days or 2 months in the freezer).

A view from the Potting Shed
Children love pretending, and creative play can include play sand, water and of course mud. Elements such as a mud kitchen, logs to jump off and a tree to climb are all much more fun (and cheaper) than modern play equipment. I love to see a garden which on first inspection looks like an adult space, but has elements for initiating play. Stepping stones through a border; a self contained water feature; bark areas under trees for den making; grass mounds for climbing up and rolling back down; paths to race bikes on; washing line poles ic o op f

Parents often ask about child-friendly plants, and there are basically two ways in which children could be adversely affected by garden plants: ingestion, or contact. The majority of ornamental plants, roots, seeds and berries range from slightly to very toxic, but statistically (research shows) that the number of deaths is tiny. The vast majority taste so disgusting that your child probably would spit most of it out, and if poisonous then vomiting would most likely occur because it is the body’s natural defence mechanism (apple pips must surely be the most commonly eaten poisonous seeds!). Foxgloves, fungi and delphinium seeds are the most commonly known plant poisons, but others less well known include daffodils, which are planted in most gardens and public places without a second thought. The leaves of rhubarb, green parts on tomatoes and potatoes are all harmful, but we still grow them in schools. Happy (and safe) gardening. Lee Bestall to d

Now is the time to prepare to plant your potatoes. Firstly it is most important that you grow potatoes from certified seed so check with your supplier. If you have not already dug the ground last autumn then do this as soon as possible. Place new seed potatoes in a tray or egg box in a light but cool, frost-free place. They will then start to sprout young shoots. This is not essential but can lead to a better crop later in the year. Potatoes like to be well fed so dig in plenty of manure or compost. Potatoes are graded into three main types, First and Second Earlies then Main crop. Sow First Earlies from March, Second from April and Mains from late April to May. Sow at a depth of at least 4–5 inches and 12 inches apart. As they appear above ground start to “earth them up” by raking the soil into peaks. Harvest from June to September. You can also successfully grow potatoes in containers or bags. These need to be 18 to 20 inches or more in depth and watered well during the year. Mike Parker

R
ecently I was asked to design a family garden: a fun outdoor space, with no obvious pieces of play equipment such as a big blue climbing frame. Instead fun is designed into the garden space much more subtly, the key being to introduce elements which children can “accidentally” find, and which stimulate thought and exercise their creative minds.
February & March
3 Clean out the inside of your greenhouse – remove all plants, wash and clean all glass and benches with Jeyes Fluid, use a smoke cone overnight if you want to, replace plants& pots etc ready for spring sowing. 3 Prune redcurrant, whitecurrant and blackcurrant bushes if no frost threatened. 3 Towards the end of the month give hedges their first cut of the year. 3 Put cloches in position to warm the soil before planting or sowing vegetables next month. Cloches should be in place for at least 3–4 weeks to be effective. 3 If we have snow, take care in the garden, keep paths clear, watch out for ice and check ponds.

A Good Read My Autobiography by Alex Ferguson
Everyone knows who Alex Ferguson is – controversial, yes, but without doubt the most successful football manager of modern times. On its release, this became one of the fastest selling football books of all time, with fans queuing at midnight to get their hands on a copy. Headlines were made by Ferguson’s pronouncements on the quality of his own players and those who starred for other teams. Shortly afterwards, the book hit the headlines when readers discovered a number of factual errors in the text. Bearing all of that in mind, should you buy a copy? If you are a Manchester United fan, then the answer is that you probably have one already. If not, what will you get? The book mainly focuses on Ferguson’s last seasons in charge at Old Trafford, and his final year in particular, with some detailed rundowns of key games. In between, there are chapters devoted to memorable friends and adversaries – notably Roy Keane, David Beckham, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho. Ferguson tells a good story, and as you might expect, he has a huge stock of anecdotes about his time in charge. He also shows an encyclopaedic knowledge of the game and offers a real insight into the scouting and signing process at a Premier League club. However, if you have read any of the articles published at the time the book was released, chances are that you have heard the best tales already, and certainly the best lines. The chapter on Keane is a prime example – the argument in the changing room is undoubtedly dramatic, but comes as no real surprise. The now legendary boot-kicking incident with Beckham is equally familiar, and offers no great insight. I bought this hoping to learn something new about what makes Ferguson tick and how he achieved his phenomenal success. I finished it rather disappointed, feeling that I hadn’t found out a great deal – other than the general message that if Fergie is not always right, then he is 99% of the time. For the fans, a must. For the general reader, maybe not.
