February & March 2016 – Issue 38

Hello...

...and welcome to the February March issue of the Eastbourne Old Town Crier. Love is in the air and tradition states that February 14th is the day when birds pair up! Why not say it with flowers and turn to page 6 for advice on which to choose for your loved one. It’s also a leap year, in which according to an old Irish legend, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men on February 29th – every four years, so watch out single men of Eastbourne! According to the Guinness Book of Records, there are Leap Day World Records held by one family producing three consecutive generations born on February 29th! It’s also Shrove Tuesday on the 9th, followed by Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent on the 10th...what are you going to give up? If you would like to publish an article about the club or organisation in Eastbourne that you are a member of, please contact me at the details below. The deadline for the next issue is Wednesday 9th March. I look forward to hearing from you. Wish Upon a Sussex Star An Eastbourne Cheerleading team is appealing to the online community to help its members book a place in the prestigious “Future Cheer” competition which is held at the Disneyland Resort, Paris. Every year competitors from all over Europe descend on the major tourist attraction to showcase their talents in front of an international crowd. Sussex Stars Cheerleading is hoping to compete in the 2017 event, in what would be the first time the squad has travelled across the channel to perform. The announcement comes just one month after the Stars took second place at the BCA Allstars competition at Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre. Coach Emma Turner said: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the girls to train hard for such an inaugural event in the cheerleading calendar. It is our goal to get them to Paris, although we appreciate not every parent has the funds to be able to send their child to another country for competition.” www.creativitycardsandcrafts.co.uk The PE and dance teacher went on to say: “We are asking people to ‘Wish Upon a Sussex Star’ via our ‘Go Fund Me’Labyrinth, page so we7can spread 6 The Mark Lane, the word and hopefully Eastbourne BN21 4RJto help get as many of our girls receive some donations 01323as439769 to Paris possible.”

Should the squad reach its target to get to Disneyland Paris, it would tie in with the club’s tenth anniversary. Coaches Emma and Caroline can think of no better way of celebrating than shaking their pom poms in the Disney parade with the rest of the Sussex Stars. Sussex Stars is aiming to raise £4,000 by this time next year, to help get the girls to Paris. The donation page is https://www.gofundme.com/tadqsma8 Videos of the cheerleading group’s winning BCA routine can be found on Facebook and YouTube by searching for Sussex Stars Cheerleading.

The Language Of Flowers It’s nearly Valentine’s Day and millions will be rushing out to buy or send flowers. Traditionally this will be red roses of course. Others may choose their purchases on the basis of colour, smell or even price but there’s a whole language and meaning to flowers too, which is called Floriography.

Roses: Red Roses symbolise

Love and Desire but changing the colour of the flower leads to different connotations. For example, Yellow is for friendship, Pink for perfect happiness and Orange for fascination. There are different meanings for specific types of rose too, such as Tea Roses meaning ‘I’ll remember always’ and Dog Roses connecting to pain and pleasure. Formations also have an impact. Thinking back to the traditional dozen red roses, a bunch of a single bloom, means I love you or I still love you, whilst an assortment of colours represents the sentiment ‘you’re everything to me.’ A dozen red roses

has become the norm, because of the significance of the number twelve within nature, philosophy and religion. The number 12 often represents a full cycle – 12 months of the year, 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 hours on a clock. From ancient times, cultures around the world have developed calendars based on cycles of twelve, and there are many mythological and religious connections to the number also. Carnations: Pink carnations mean ‘I’ll never forget you,’ whilst red symbolise admiration and yellow rejection and disappointment, so probably best to avoid those! Lilies: Calla Lilies represent beauty and Tiger Lilies wealth, so the latter is perhaps a good choice if you are looking to impress. Tulips: apparently show love and passion too. Yellow ones which are my daughter’s favourite, mean ‘there’s sunshine in your smile,’ whereas red tulips are a declaration of love and white ones say ‘I’m worthy of you.’ Daffodils: show regard. Freesias: demonstrate trust. Of course there are many more wonderful flowers to choose from, so if you really want to be sure of making the right impression, it’s worth asking your florist about their meaning. UK Skills is ‘plane’ sailing for SDC joinery student On Tuesday 15th December, Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Skills Competition Manager James Duffell, travelled to Sussex Downs College to present SDC student Simon McGreevy his second place certificate from the National Skill Show, and prize money of £500. Simon McGreevy, 21, joined Sussex Downs College in April 2014 as an Advanced Apprentice Level 3 Bench Joiner after learning the quality basics working for the family company, Barn Joinery Ltd. Simon’s father Kim McGreevy, who instilled in Simon a passion for joinery, said, “I am immensely proud of Simon. He is a skilled joiner who works tirelessly to provide a professional service with quality results. His professionalism is something to be commended in one so young, and I have faith that he will continue to excel in the future.” Simon took part in the three-day National Skill Show held at the Birmingham NEC in November, where he won a Silver Medal for his timed assessment. This success means that Simon is now eligible to represent the UK as part of Team GB in the 2017 World Skills held in Abu Dhabi. Staff in the Carpentry & Joinery department at SDC are delighted with Simon’s well deserved success. Wesley Grant, Quality Assurance Co-ordinator for Construction Carpentry & Joinery said, “We are thrilled for Simon and will continue to support him all the way to Abu Dhabi. He is a methodical, focused, diligent and creative student who deserves to be recognised for his talent.” Photo: SDC Joinery student Simon McGreevy ‘nailed-it’ at the National Skill Show in November.

Access & Co natural carpet Cleaning LTD Access Cleaning Services began operating in Eastbourne in 2006 when Stephen was made redundant and decided it was time to set up in business himself. The company has grown over the last ten years and now has a reputation with local homeowners and businesses alike for excellent service and reliability.

Access & Co now have two vans operating, and a new top of the range Altec carpet cleaning machine and dryer. They are also able to provide an environmentally friendly option to clean carpets without chemicals, which is especially important to clients with allergies, and those with pets and young children.

Not long after setting up in business, Stephen decided to specialize in carpet and upholstery cleaning, including stain removal. He purchased a Prochem carpet cleaning machine and went on various training courses. After many successful years working on his own, in 2015 Stephen decided to expand the business and now has a new business partner, Michael. Michael has undertaken the same rigorous training, and together they have launched a new company – Access & Co Natural Carpet Cleaning Ltd.

As well as their carpet cleaning service they offer a range of other cleaning services, including regular office cleaning, cleaning of communal areas and End of Tenancy cleans. All these services are quoted free of charge. You will find Stephen, Michael and the whole team to be polite, friendly and helpful. So when you are thinking of Spring cleaning this year, why not give your local carpet cleaning service a call – if you save the advert from this magazine you will also get a 10% discount on your first clean.

‘Free’ Health & Posture Checks

This half term your child can have a ‘free’ health and posture check with Lushington Chiropractic. The clinic is working with the children’s charity Barnardo’s to help their fundraising. The chiropractors are donating their time, waiving the normal ÂŁ50 fee, in return for a suitable donation to Barnardo’s instead. Thousands of babies and children regularly have check ups with chiropractors throughout the UK. Just like the rest of us, children and teenagers’ spines can be affected by activities of daily life. Consumer research found that half of teenagers have suffered with headaches, neck, back or limb problems. Modern lifestyles seem to be increasing the risk so it’s worth avoiding bad posture and overloading where possible. These health and posture checks give you the chance to discuss your child’s case with a fully qualified and experienced chiropractor. They may advise on posture,

lifestyle, nutrition or even exercises. You will also be able to discuss any specific concerns you have with them. The focus will be on getting to the root of a problem and improving overall health (wellness care). Remember chiropractors are more than just back specialists, they have expert training to diagnose and treat muscle, joint and nerve problems throughout the body. Lushington Chiropractic is a multiple award winning clinic in Eastbourne town centre. We genuinely care about our patients and we have a passion for providing expert diagnosis, gentle care and friendly advice for all ages and stages of life. We have an extremely professional and dedicated team who aim to deliver the highest level of service at all times. Our customers often compliment us on the welcoming and friendly atmosphere in the clinic. You’ll find the practice friendly and professional. We pride ourselves on our reputation, having helped thousands of local people of all ages. These health and posture checks help identify specific things that you/your child can do to improve their health. During this half term you only have to make a donation to Barnardo’s.

We strongly recommend booking in advance. Just call Lushington Chiropractic on 01323 722499

The Sisters Grimm: The Fairytale Detectives by Michael Buckley

There are certain characters and stories that we have all grown up with. We know that it isn’t a good idea to build a house out of straw or sticks. Apples given to us by strange old women might not be good for us. And planting some magic beans in your back garden is certainly not the smartest thing you could do unless you want to be attacked by giants! But they are just old stories, right? Well, what if they weren’t? In this first novel in the Sisters Grimm series (aimed at children around the age of 10), we meet Sabrina and Daphne Grimm. They live in New York and have in the past year been placed with one foster family after another following the mysterious disappearance of their parents. The girls have become experts at running away from each home as they find themselves treated badly.

16

05/01/2016 16:03

Suddenly, out of the blue, their grandmother appears and offers them a home: shocking as the girls had been told that she had died. The authorities don’t seem too concerned by this – they are simply happy to get rid of Sabrina and Daphne – and so they are delivered a small town called Ferryport Landings and to the welcoming arms of Granny Relda. But Ferryport Landings is no ordinary town, as the girls will soon discover. After all, how many schools have Snow White as a teacher? Here live the Everafters: characters from fairy-tales who are doomed to remain there for ever due to a curse. A curse that Sabrina and Daphne find themselves at the heart of. It soon becomes clear that Granny Relda is no ordinary Granny and the fact that she is still alive is just one secret that has been kept from the Sisters Grimm. By Willow Coby

A view from the Potting Shed

W

ant a romantic gift for your gardening Valentine? Forget the drooping daffs and jetlagged lilies, flown halfway round the world and marked up to extortionate prices. For a gardener a real romantic gesture is one that will last longer than a few days. Some gardeners actually dislike cut flowers, and most gardeners are eco-friendly, so when you think of all the paper, yards of cellophane, and air-miles clocked up by exotic blooms, a living plant suddenly seems like a better option. Potted plants are more suggestive of permanent affection than a bunch of flowers anyway, and on a purely practical level, they give much better value for money! Jasmine, stephanotis and gardenias are fragrant and glamorous, or try a passionflower vine, wound round a heart-shaped support. What could be more romantic than that? We think of red roses as being the bloom of romance so the m

Myrtle is another plant you might like to consider. It’s been associated with love since Roman times and is still used in wedding bouquets. With its neat glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of fragrant, fluffy white flowers followed by purple berries, Myrtis communis is a plant of quiet good taste. If planted in a sheltered spot it can eventually grow into a tree up to 5m tall. If you want to give a flower in bloom at the moment try a potted camellia, winter honeysuckle, violas, or an orchid. These plants are all associated with love and longing. If you simply must hand over a bunch of cut flowers, try to choose blooms grown in the mild climate of the Scilly Isles as environmentally-friendly alternatives to exotic species flown in from the other side of the globe. ‘Paperwhite’ narcissi are beautifully scented and available now. With just a little thought you can come up with the perfect gift for the gardener in your life. Rachael Leverton

These pure golden yellow flowers are native European woodland plants and can produce a bright display along with snowdrops in February to March. They like shaded areas and when planted in large numbers under shrubs and deciduous trees will give a carpet of colour and efficient ground cover, growing to a height of only 13cm. Aconites can be bought as tubers in the autumn, but are better acquired when in the green (in leaf) during or just after flowering and will establish themselves more easily. They are happy growing in a well drained light acidic or alkaline soil. Seeds are also available to sow in March to June.

what better than an entire bush of them that promises years of pleasure ahead. One problem with rose bushes is that they are not at their best in February, and will most likely resemble a bunch of thorny twigs in a pot! But if your Valentine is a keen gardener I guarantee they will not mind. In fact they will enjoy the anticipation of the future blooms.

store over winter, planting the good ones into potting compost & keeping in the greenhouse until they start to shoot. 3 Turn over the compost heap with a fork to aerate it & add some water if it seems dry. 3 It’s not too late to feed the veg patch – spread over or dig in some compost – this will give the soil a boost ready for planting in the next few weeks. 3 Check new summer raspberry canes are all tied in. They can also be trimmed down slightly if they have got too tall for their supports.

Art from Elsewhere International Contemporary Art from UK Galleries Curated by David Elliott 23 January – 3 April 2016 Towner is delighted to present Art from Elsewhere, a major Hayward Touring exhibition supported by the Art Fund, of international contemporary art collected by the gallery, and five other museums and galleries across the UK.

indicating how art not only continues to be a truthful and often challenging expression of our times, but also has become a way of seeing them more clearly.”

Art from Elsewhere at Towner comprises forty-five works by twenty-six of today’s most influential artists including Mohammed Bourouissa, Jenny Holzer, Peter Hujar, Imran Qureshi, Józef Robakowski, Robert Smithson, Nancy Spero and Kara Walker. The wide range of global themes explored in the show – migration, identity, colonialism, gender, censorship, territory, communications, class – are reflected in the rich diversity of media used by the artists, from photography, drawing and works on paper, to Super 8 film, sound and video projections, sculpture and installation works.

Towner has a growing collection of international contemporary art that developed between 2007 and 2012 with support from Art Fund International and Contemporary Art Society from artists including Olafur Eliasson, Wolfgang Tillmans, Anya Gallacio, Julian Opie, Tacita Dean, Yael Bartana and Eugenio Dittborn. They are situated within an internationally renowned collection of around 4,500 works including the most significant body of work by Eric Ravilious and other important works of modern British art.

Curated by David Elliott, all the works in Art from Elsewhere are drawn from the collections of six museums across the UK which were recently awarded over £4 million by the Art Fund to build outstanding collections of international contemporary art through Art Fund International: Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery in partnership with The New Art Gallery Walsall; Bristol Museum & Art Gallery; GoMA, Glasgow; MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art); and Towner, Eastbourne. Tailored to each touring venue, plus the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston, the exhibition concludes at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and Arnolfini in April 2016 following its presentation at Towner.

Shirin Aliabadi, Carl Andre, Stephen Antonakos, Yto Barrada, Yael Bartana, Lothar Baumgarten, Mohamed Bourouissa, Robert Breer, Paulo Bruscky, Nathan Carter, Thomas Demand, Eugenio Dittborn, Omer Fast, Meschac Gaba, Shilpa Gupta, Romuald Hazoumè, Michael Heizer, Jenny Holzer, Peter Hujar, Emily Jacir, Jitish Kallat, Amar Kanwar, Ola Kolehmainen, Barbara Kruger, Ana Mendieta, Aleksandra Mir, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Imran Qureshi, Józef Robakowski, Shahzia Sikander, Robert Smithson, Nancy Spero, Beat Streuli, Kara Walk er, Yang Zhenzhong, Yeesookyung, Akram Zaatari and Horacio Zabala.

Elliott said, “A number of museums outside London have made remarkable purchases of contemporary art from around the world with the help of a special programme created by the Art Fund. I have selected this Hayward Touring exhibition show out of this pool with a mind to
