Clare Teal in concert with Jason Rebello

The Birley Centre, Sat 18th Feb, 7.30pm

As much as she loves fronting her Big Band or her Hollywood Orchestra, multi award winning singer and Radio 2 presenter Clare Teal still revels in performing in more intimate venues accompanied only by her regular pianist, Jason Rebello. From swing to sublime ballads, Clare’s duo concerts are renowned for their fabulous arrangements, interspersed with her warm and witty storytelling, guaranteeing something personal and very special for the audience. The rich, jazz-infused repertoire explores timeless classics penned by the legendary musical storytellers of the last hundred years, and celebrates giants of the Great American and British Songbooks, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson and Peggy Lee, through to

the work of more contemporary writers crafting the standards of today. No doubt you will also hear Clare’s own original compositions, including a selection of material from her new album ,Twelve O’Clock Tales.

Tickets are £26.50 (Reserved Seats – Auditorium & Balcony) only on sale at the Hailsham Pavilion, tel: 01323 841414 (Please note tickets cannot be purchased in advance at the Birley Centre). Further details at www.spyboy.co.uk

MOTCOMBE VILLAGE CHRISTMAS FAIR Motcombe Village Christmas Fair organisers wished to say a huge thank you and well done for supporting, donating, volunteering, selling, visiting and being part of the Motcombe Village Christmas Fair on Saturday 10th December 2016. You should all be proud that the event paid for itself through the donations from the local businesses and the stallholders’ payments, thus giving us an even greater final raised amount of £687.67, going to Eastbourne Winter Night Shelter. Thank you! That figure was mainly raised on the day of the fair by donations from everyone, the raffle tickets bought and Santa visits. Since 1st December 2011, 528 individuals from 35 churches have staffed 1,374 shifts over 458 nights at an average of 4.18 volunteers per shift. This equates to almost 29,000 volunteer hours.

The money was handed to David Barratt, Trustee of Kingdom Way Trust (photo), and will be designated for the winter night shelter. It will help them tremendously in renewing the equipment (beds often break and are quite expensive) and the general running costs, insurance, transport costs and items of bedding etc. We hope that throughout the community we can do more to help this charity in the great work it does. Happy New Year!

A Community in Action The definition of community can be an association by locality, or by common cultural and historical heritage, or by the distinction of being distinct from the larger society within which it exists. Old Town in Eastbourne is a particular locale which has particularly low levels of crime. However, at the beginning of the winter cars parked in some streets in Old Town became the target of malicious vandalism in significant numbers. The police recognised this as extraordinary and, as a result, implemented measures to stop this intentional damage to property. One theory put forward was that this was done by someone who felt outside of the community and wanted to harm and intimidate the people who live in this area, perhaps because residents of Old Town are generally secure and confident that they are living in a safe environment: “I’ll show them”. Given the great annoyance and cost of damage to property, it would not be impossible for people to become more suspicious of each other, to begin to look out for ‘outsiders’ or people who appear to not belong in Old Town. It would be easy for people to withdraw and become anxious and for this intimidation to succeed. However, community that demonstrates resilience is one that is able to accommodate behaviour that has potential to become divisive and harmful, and instead uses it for good. People demonstrated inclusive rather than exclusive behaviour as they gathered together to discuss the means of looking out for their own, and each other’s homes and property. The community held public meetings to convey and share information about the developments and events, and specifically discuss what is being done and what can be done in order to stop this behaviour. This is a wonderful example of community in action. The community of Old Town residents stepped up to the challenge and was not found wanting.

‘Songs of Stage & Screen’

The Royal Hippodrome, Eastbourne, 25th February 2017 Fresh from their recent BBC One appearance, airing Christmas Eve, on ‘David Walliams celebrates Dame Shirley Bassey’, British harmony trio, Blake, are back with a brand-new tour, featuring the finest songs from stage and screen, with projections and lighting that bring the cinematic magic to life. Linked together with the boys’ famous improvised banter, the show features music from Hanz Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, Leonard Bernstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Leonard Cohen, The Beach Boys and many more. This is the ultimate celebration of movies and musicals, all sung in thrilling vocal harmony.

The members of Blake all found their love of music at a young age, and sang with various groups and choirs throughout their childhoods. Their passion for music continues to grow and they wanted to share this with the communities they would be visiting on their tour. “We thought about how we could involve school choirs and local community choirs in our live shows, and that getting some of the choirs up on stage with us would be a great experience for both them and us.” - Oliver Baines, Tenor.

Blake has an impressive CV of achievements, including several No. 1s, multi-platinum-selling albums and over The tour follows appearances alongside the sensational 150 TV appearances, as well as having won a Brit Dame Shirley Bassey, with whom Blake released a Award for Album of the Year. Trusted Local Handymen Retired police officers in East Sussex are pioneers in an ambitious national network of highly vetted handymen launched by ‘Blue Handymen’. Helping to combat the ongoing problem of cowboy builders and dodgy tradespeople, local retired police officers with a passion for home maintenance are taking up tools to provide peace of mind to the residents and businesses of Eastbourne and Bexhill. Typically police officers retire after 30 years’ service, and a huge number are still eager to continue playing an active and productive role in their communities. All handymen prove themselves capable and experienced in home maintenance works before joining the agency and carry recent CRB Checks.

Handymen

Managing Director, Nick Orde-Powlett, hopes that the company’s rigorous selection process will bring security and peace of mind to people in the area: “Our vetting process is second to none. All of our handymen are friendly retired police officers with many years working in the community under their belts – they understand peoples’ concerns and fears better than anyone else, and they genuinely care.” Sussex Handyman Lindsay said: “Having been a police officer for 30 years and being passionate about serving the community, what better way in retirement of continuing to serve the community than by indulging my passion for DIY and utilising my skills to assist local people.” Roy Bishop has used the service: “The service I received was extremely good. The handyman was very punctual, fast working and polite. I would recommend him to anyone.” You can book a free quote online at www.trust inblue.com or by calling Freephone 0800 255 0 255.

Safe Cycling in Eastbourne Recently, a Frenchman named Robert Marchand set a new world record on his bicycle by riding a little over 14 miles in an hour. Now this might be a normal speed for a young person cycling over a short time, but Marchand kept this up for an hour and he was 105! Age doesn’t matter when you exercise.

Mind you, recently on the national news, new scientific findings cite living within 50 metres of a busy road as a cause of dementia, so that’s another reason to jump on a bike to cut down traffic. Let’s turn our town from being in the lowest 15% in England for numbers of cyclists, with our poor statistic of 10.5% cycling once a month – compared with Cambridge, with its multitudes of cycle paths, at 58% – into a cycle-centric town, with patchworks of cycle and foot paths, and town centres and junctions favouring walkers and cyclists.

Lushington Chiropractic make 2017 the year you banish your back pain! We all too often dismiss back pain as ‘just one of those things. It’ll be gone in a few days, won’t it?’ Annually, back pain affects half of the population, and statistics show that a quarter of women and a third of men over 65 struggle with more severe, prolonged episodes. Although it disrupts simple aspects of day to day life, the high statistics suggest that too many of us are just ignoring the problem and hoping for the best. Perhaps we feel that it can’t be treated or that it’s just a harmless hitch that we shouldn’t make a fuss about. Here are ten top tips for tackling back pain from Lushington Chiropractic, an awardwinning practice in Eastbourne town centre:

Keep Moving Keeping fit and active is a must! This benefits spinal strength and mobility. A 20-minute walk is much better than a 20-minute sit down. If British weather is holding you back, why not go for a swim at the local pool? Lift Carefully There is an art to lifting heavy objects. Bend your knees, keep your back straight and don’t twist your body. Hold your tummy in tight and keep the object close to you, safest for both you and whatever you may be lifting!

Sit Correctly Try to keep your lower back supported when sitting down. Keep your feet flat on the floor, with your hips slightly higher than your knees. Although it’s always tempting to curl your legs up on the sofa whilst hugging that cup of tea, try to avoid doing it! Invest in a Nice Bed Your mattress should be firm enough that it supports your back, but should allow your hips and shoulders to sink in slightly. Most importantly, you should feel comfortable whilst in bed and when you wake up. Remember, price/orthopaedic labels are not always the best guide! 14

Sleep Comfortably Sleeping on your back is best for the body. If you have to sleep on your side, put a pillow between your knees and try not to twist into the recovery position. Never sleep on your front because it twists your neck and lower back. Sweet dreams! Get a Good Start to the Day When you awake,

pull your knees into your chest to stretch the hips. This wakes up the lower back and relieves stiff joints.

Warm Up and Chill Out Do some light stretching before and after physical activity, including things such as gardening and clearing up. This will make sure your muscles are warmed up and cooled off properly.

De-stress Get plenty of exercise, eat healthily and sleep like a king or queen. Invest in a relaxing massage to reduce muscular tension! At Lushington Chiropractic, a range of massage therapies are available. Finally, a valid excuse for a day of pampering! Listen To Your Body Pain is a warning sign. If

something is hurting you, don’t carry on through the pain. Get someone to lend you a hand instead of pushing your body too far.

Visit A Chiropractor They are the experts at

treating muscle, joint and nerve related problems. The focus with chiropractic is on actually fixing the problem and helping the body to work better, not just feel better.. The chiropractors at Lushington Chiropractic are always happy to help. Feel free to telephone the clinic on 01323 722499 www.chirocare.co.uk. If the tips aren’t working for you, seeking help is probably a very good idea. It’s time we stopped aching and started shaking our back pain! If you are local to Eastbourne and would like more information, do not hesitate to contact the Lushington Chiropractic.

Lushington Chiropractic is offering £10 off the cost of a New Patient Consultation (normally £49). Valid until the end of February 2017.

ome-made compost is a thing of wonder... when all goes well! But too often it goes horribly wrong, and instead of rich, sweet, crumbly stuff we end up with a putrefying heap. For a long time I believed making great compost was beyond me. There are so many methods and myths, it all seemed too complicated. Well good news...it isn’t!

Hellebores

t

Hellebores are perfect for brightening up shady areas of the garden during late winter and early spring, being perennial they will come up every year. Sometimes known as the Christmas or Lenten rose, they have attractive flowers and foliage. The plants like rich and well drained soil, and will grow in a north or east facing garden but don’t cope with strong, cold winds. Removing some of the large leaves which sometimes hide the flowers enables insects to pollinate them, this then ensures good seed for propagation of new plants in due course. Hellebores are not ideal for showing off in a vase but the flower heads look good displayed in a saucer of water.

o

what

to d

You can make your own. It’s very easy apparently, using old floorboards, posts and wire netting. Unfortunately, I am to DIY what elephants are to hang gliding so I opt for ready-made bins. Check with your council, as many offer cheap bins to encourage recycling. If not, garden centres stock a good variety. Size matters! A container should be 3 ft /1m square minimum, preferably larger. This allows heat to build up inside the heap, which aids the decay process. Position it out of the main line of sight, behind a shed or some tall plants.

Compost materials:

Fruit and veg scraps, coffee grounds and tea bags, old flowers and bedding plants, garden clippings, annual weeds, crushed egg shells, small animal bedding (e.g. rabbit), shredded cardboard, including tubes and egg cartons, and lawn mowings.

You can’t use:

Food waste (bread, meat etc.), cat and dog faeces, evergreen leaves, thick-rooted perennial weeds.

How to make compost:

JOBS TO DO IN Feb & March

3 Plant up a pot of primroses to enjoy near the house and when blooms are finished plant out in the garden where they will bloom next year. 3 Trim winter heathers once they have finished flowering. 3 Cover an area of prepared ground with a cloche or black polythene to warm the soil for early sowings of peas for example. 3 It’s not too late to plant new strawberry plants, available now commercially These will then crop fully this summer. 16

Compost containers

I’ve tried several methods, including my late grandfather’s, which involved careful layers of various ingredients and sprinkling on lime at intervals. It worked, but I’m a lazy gardener really and can’t be bothered with all the faff. This is my method, worked out through a combination of trial and error (lots of error!). Mix all material together so there is no concentration of any one sort. Firm it all down, moisten it, and cover it with some old carpet to keep heat in and prevent evaporation. If you start the process now, by Autumn you’ll be digging in your very own wonderful compost, dragged from the bottom of your heap. You’ll have done your bit for recycling, and best of all...it’s free! By Rachael Leverton

A Good Read

Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight We all think we know our children. We think we understand what makes them tick and we like to think that they would turn to us if they were in trouble. But do we really know what is going on in their lives? Kate certainly thought she knew about her 15-yearold daughter, Amelia. As a young law student Kate found herself pregnant and saw the chance to have the one thing she had always wanted: love. And so, she raised Amelia – with the help of a nanny – qualified as a lawyer and became successful in her career. She appears to have everything. A comfortable home in a desirable part of Brooklyn, and a place at Grace Hall prep school for Amelia: the perfect life. Of course, perfection is fragile, and it doesn’t take much to bring Kate’s world tumbling down. She receives a phone call from the principle at Grace Hall. There has been an incident and Amelia is to be suspended for three days. She requests that Kate comes immediately to collect her from school. Dropping everything is not always an option, and public transport can sometimes let you down. Life can let you down far more than you can dare to imagine. She arrives at Grace Hall too late. Too late to collect her daughter; her only child who is now lying on the concrete, covered by a sheet. What could make a normal, happy 15-year-old jump off a building to her death? Alternating narratives draw us into the lives of Kate and Amelia, reconstructing the events that led to Amelia being on the roof of the school. Did she jump? Or is there something darker going on? Do any of us really know our teenagers?

The Museum of Art

4th February – 17th April 2017 Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne Towner is delighted to present The Museum of Art, a display of over one hundred works from Towner’s acclaimed Collection. Inspired by the eclectic collections amassed by 19th-century collectors, The Museum of Art uses works from the Towner Collection, playfully reflecting the mood and character of a Victorian museum. With themes ranging from Classical Nudes to Seascapes, and from Oriental works to Animals and Birds, the installation juxtaposes seemingly disconnected paintings and brings together diverse clusters of sculptures in crowded cases. These unexpected arrangements allude to hidden connections and inspire the viewer to invent their own histories for the works. This exhibition explores the stories and motivation behind some of the gifts from art collectors that have been bequeathed to the Towner Collection. The display will include the original Towner Bequest of 22 paintings, left to the people of Eastbourne by Alderman John Chisholm Towner, as well as works by Henry Moore, Victor Pasmore, Christopher Wood and Grayson Perry. The Museum of Art is accompanied by a diverse programme of events for all ages, many of which will take place within the gallery itself, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with the Collection within the setting of the exhibition. The internationally acclaimed Towner Collection contains more than 4,500 works and is best known for its

22

modern British art – including the broadest and most significant body of work by Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). The Towner Collection began with the Towner bequest in 1920, which included Victorian paintings of landscapes, animals and children by popular artists of the day – including Henry Dawson, Thomas Sydney Cooper and William Strutt. From 1920 through to the present day, generous individuals, collectors and artists, as well as the Friends of the Towner, have donated works to the Towner Collection, and it now features a cross-section of important 20th century British artists including Christopher Wood, Edward Bawden, Henry Moore, Paul Nash, Victor Pasmore, Alfred Wallis and Duncan Grant. It is also known for its emerging collection of international contemporary art, and a particular focus on Moving Image works. Contemporary artists represented in the Towner Collection include Olafur Eliasson, Wolfgang Tillmans, Anya Gallaccio, Julian Opie, Isaac Julien, Omer Fast, Tacita Dean and Grayson Perry.
