February and March 2018 – Issue 50
Hello...
...and welcome to the February and March issue of the Eastbourne Old Town Crier, your community magazine, business directory and what’s on guide. Firstly, a Happy New Year! I hope you had an enjoyable festive time, although it does seem a distant memory now! So on to 2018 and all it has to offer... there’s plenty to celebrate in February with Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day on the 13th, Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday or the start of Lent on the 14th followed by the Chinese New Year celebrations on the 16th. What a week! Then in March it’s St David’s Day on the 1st, Mothering Sunday on the 11th, St Patrick’s Day on the 17th and then the Easter weekend starts on Good Friday the 30th with Easter Sunday on April 1st. Phew! Spring will be here before you know it! And talking of spring, don’t forget to put your clocks forward by an hour on Sunday 25th March, for daylight saving. Enjoy all your celebrations and your February and March issue! Fran Tegg, Editor T: 01273 710793 E: fran@theoldtowncrier.co.uk www.theoldtowncrier.co.uk Facebook: eastbourneoldtowncrier

Tickets for Courtney’s show two years ago at the Birley Centre soon sold out, so for those who missed seeing him, and those who will undoubtedly want to see him again, it is a welcome return for the big man. No musician more embodies the dramatic transformation in British jazz over the past twenty-five years than Courtney Pine. The ground-breaking multi-instrumentalist has led a generation of exciting and innovative players who have broadened their styles to take jazz out to a wider audience. Awarded an OBE and CBE for services to music, his name regularly appears on the list of Most Influential
Black Britons, and his recordings and live work have been recognised throughout his career, with numerous awards including BBC Jazz Awards, MOBO and Mercury Music Prizes. Expect an exhilarating evening of up close jazz together with a little calypso, ska and Afro-Caribbean joy from one of the most celebrated saxophonist on the planet. Reserved Seats (£27.50) from the Hailsham Pavilion – 01323 841414, and at Pebble Records in Gildredge Road, Eastbourne – 01323 430304. MOTCOMBE CHRISTMAS FAIR 2017 success Motcombe Christmas Fair was a great success again this year, bringing together many people, with market stalls, local produce, entertainment and a wonderful festive atmosphere that proved what a great community Old Town really is. We were delighted that we raised £1,000 for the Eastbourne Winter Night Shelter during the event, due to all of your kind donations and efforts, smashing last year’s total, so well done! On 18th December, we met with David Barratt, Project Coordinator, to pass on the donation. David went on to say: ‘It was a pleasure to hear about your wonderful community engagement at the Motcombe Christmas Fair and to be presented with this magnificent donation. We opened on 1st December and we are currently running at near capacity. We have a maximum of 15 beds per night. We have retained many of our 270+ volunteers who help make this possible, together with the 9 town centre churches who make their church halls available to us. We are so grateful to you and others who support us financially, and we know our guests very much appreciate all that is done for them. Thank you again for your generosity.’ Well done people of Old Town and beyond. Happy New Year! Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

INHABIT: Composing settings from the towner collection
17th February – 13th May 2018 Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne Towner presents Inhabit, an exhibition curated entirely using works from its extensive collection of historic, modern and contemporary art.
This conceptual installation of paintings, sculptures and prints invites the visitor to inhabit the gallery spaces as they move through three defined ‘settings’. These immersive environments, created through the juxtaposition of the art works, inspire the imagination and encourage the viewer to find hidden connections by altering their perspective. Visitors enter into a monochrome landscape where the town’s folk are noticeably absent; evidence of urbanisation waits patiently for new inhabitants as a bird hovers over a craggy rock face in amongst stark dark trees. Next, they step inside a domestic setting, defined by bold primary colours, before finally visiting a setting dominated by a mountain and a leafy forest path that draws the viewer in to an imagined landscape. Inhabit includes works by Edward Bawden, Dennis Creffield, Gertrude Hermes, Phelan Gibb, Duncan Grant, Derrick Greaves, Roland Jarvis, Robert MacBryde, Harold Mockford and Monica Poole, as well as contemporary artists Peter Liversidge, Tania Kovats, Zoe Walker and Graham Gussin. The display will also showcase new acquisitions to the Towner Collection, a selection of prints by Patrick Caulfield, and paintings by Wilfred Avery and Patrick Heron. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of associated events exploring themes and works in the exhibition in more detail, as well as providing a fascinating insight into the gallery’s collection of nearly

5,000 works. These events include an informal tour of the exhibition led by the exhibition’s curator – Towner’s Collections Curator Karen Taylor, who will discuss the works and themes in the show, as well as a walk and talk led by printmaker and collector Patrick Goff focusing on the Patrick Caulfield works in the exhibition, which were gifted to the collection by Goff himself. There’s also a chance to be amongst the first to see new gifts to the Towner Collection during a talk from Towner’s Head of Collections Sara Cooper, which will include a visit to the gallery’s art store. How do you like your pancakes?
Fruits of the forest with vanilla ice cream and a splash of Amaretto liqueur: This one was
a revelation. The liqueur works brilliantly with the fruit, and the hot pancakes with cold ice cream is a sublime combination. Clearly I have classy friends!
13th February is Shrove Tuesday and I will be tossing pancakes with the best of them. Usually I am a traditionalist and favour lemon and sugar topping, but this year in the interests of research I canvassed my friends for their favourite sweet and savoury pancake fillings, and tried them out. Here are my top seven.
from an American friend goes well with thick or thin pancakes. She tops hers with bacon, but you can leave that out. If you like.
Nutty chocolate spread and banana: This
Wilted spinach and Ricotta cheese: Sprinkle
tasty filling bulks the pancakes out, and makes the batter go further. Perfect if there are lots of people at your pancake supper.
Fresh mango and Greek yoghurt with a splash of Cointreau: Very sophisticated and
utterly delicious.

Blueberries and maple syrup: This contribution
Mushrooms, tomatoes and bacon: A British brunch-style pancake, or maybe a savoury supper. with a little fresh nutmeg and this makes a very tasty vegetarian supper.
Stewed rhubarb and crème fraîche: You can
prepare your rhubarb as tart or sweet as you like. I liked mine tart. The crème fraîche works really well with it. I scraped some vanilla seeds into mine and beat them in before serving. This is officially my new favourite way to eat pancakes.
Enjoy!

celebrate safer Internet Day Safer Internet Day is now celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology. The day helps to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore how we create a better and safer online community. This year’s slogan is Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you. Here are some steps we can all take to stay safe online: Create complex passwords Create strong, unique passwords for all your critical accounts. Corporate hacks are commonplace now. One database breach can reveal tens of thousands of user passwords. If you reuse your passwords, a hacker can take the leaked data from one attack and use it to login to your other accounts. The best advice is to use a password manager to help you create and store strong passwords for all of your accounts.
www.happykombucha.co.uk
Boost your network security Now that your logins are safer, make sure that your connections are secure. When you are at home or at work a passwordprotected router will encrypt your data. When you are out and about you might be tempted to use free, public Wi-Fi. This is often unsecured, which means it’s relatively easy for a hacker to access your device or information. If you access the internet a lot when you are away from home, it’s worth investing in a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN is a piece of software that creates a secure connection over the internet, so you can safely connect from anywhere. Use a firewall This is an electronic barrier that blocks unauthorized access to your computers and devices. It is often included with comprehensive security software. A firewall ensures that all of the devices connected to your network are secured, including ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) devices like smart thermostats and webcams. This is important since many IoT devices aren’t equipped with their own security measures, giving hackers a vulnerable point of entry to your entire network. Watch what you click Many of today’s online threats are based on phishing or social engineering, when you are tricked into revealing personal or sensitive information for fraudulent purposes. Spam emails, phony free offers, online quizzes – all use these tactics to entice you to click on dangerous links or give up your personal information.

Share selectively Be cautious about what you share, particularly when it comes to your identity information. Information could be used to impersonate you, or guess your passwords and logins. Think mobile! Mobile devices face new risks: dangerous apps and fraudulent links sent by text message. Don’t respond to messages from strangers, and only download apps from official app stores after reading reviews first. Make sure that your security software is enabled on your mobile, just like your computers and other devices. Ian McMullan

A DAY OF MEDITATION International Women’s Day AND CREATIVITY SAVE THIS DATE
Thursday 1st March 9am – 5pm, Florence House, Southdown Road
This will be a day of deep relaxation, meditation and ritual to cleanse and rejuvenate us spiritually and physically for the demands of the coming year. The day will include Yoga Nidra, a ‘sound bath’, meditations, creative exercises, chanting, visualisations, shamanic practices and ritual. The main focus for the day will be on our bodies and our well-being. We will start with a creative exercise that leads to a better understanding of how the stresses of day-to-day life have impacted on our bodies this year. We will consider the links between our mind/body/spirit using energy work and a visualisation. After a break we will go on a Medicine Walk around the grounds of Florence House to connect with the Spirits of Nature, and ask them for guidance and healing. After the delicious Florence House lunch there will be time to respond creatively to our experiences from the Walk using whatever feels right for each individual: talking, poetry, writing, painting, clay, drawing or collage. Finally, with shamanic drumming to ground us, we will use a simple chanting ritual to give thanks and to look to the future for ourselves, our loved ones and our beautiful, precious planet. The fee for the day is £50, which includes a fabulous meal cooked by the Florence House chef, Richard. For more information and to book, please email me or ring me. Email: robinshell63@gmail.com, tel: 07956 555688. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Wagging Tails Carers enjoy the companionship of dogs without the commitments of ownership. In addition Carers meet each dog’s owner and receive a small fee for providing the service. Barbara, a Wagging Tails Carer since 2014 said of the role, ‘It’s absolutely wonderful. You get to take dogs out and socialise with other people’. Fellow Carer Marion added, ‘I lost my two dogs to illness and old age. Being a Carer has given me an opportunity to look after dogs without the commitment of being a dog owner so soon. I have met many owners and enjoy the friendship I have with them. When a dog I’ve had before returns its like having an old friend visit, sharing quality time and walks together.’ Wagging Tails is a dog boarding company that offers dogs a holiday in the home of carefully vetted Dog Carers who are insured and licensed by their local council. Carers must be at home during the day, have their own secure garden and no children under the age of six. A Good Read
Knowledge of Angels by Jill Paton Walsh
Jill Paton Walsh is an extraordinarily versatile writer. Many will know her for her numerous works for children, and more recently for her work continuing the legacy of Dorothy L Sayers’ Peter Wimsey novels. In addition to this, she has written a number of intriguing and thought-provoking novels for adults, and Knowledge of Angels is an excellent example of these two characteristics. The story is set on a Mediterranean island in the fifteenth century, described in almost cinematic detail in the opening pages, as Paton Walsh invites us to contemplate the nature of fiction and storytelling. To this closed community come two strangers – one from the outside, a castaway found by local fishermen, and one from within, a girl seemingly raised by wolves in the forests of the island. One is as eloquent as the other is savage, but their fates become irretrievably tied together as their stories progress.

At the heart of the book lie a number of questions of belief. Palinor, the castaway, professes to have no religion, which poses a challenge to the authority of the Inquisition on the island. Amara, the wolf child, seems unredeemably animal in her behaviour, but begins to grow under the care of the nuns of Sant Clara, raising the issue of nature and nurture. Both of their stories are also about love, and self-knowledge, and what is and is not possible. Yet the book is written in such a way that these weighty questions are explored at the same time as creating a page-turning thoroughly engrossing story, in which the reader is drawn in turn into the lives of Amara and Palinor. Disturbing, sensitive and deeply affecting, this is a book that will keep you thinking for a very long time.

A view from the Potting Shed The joy of a greenhouse I am an impatient gardener. By February I am always eager to get started and my greenhouse allows me to do just that. A greenhouse means that I don’t fear the weather, I can potter in my garden all year round and I can grow a range of plants that would not survive without protection. Most gardens have room for at least a tiny greenhouse and its well worth trying to incorporate one into your space.
You can make a greenhouse from poles and polythene but it won’t last more than a couple of years and won’t be pretty to look at. Fully glazed aluminium greenhouses are good value, and if you like wood then go for western ic o op f

I prefer electric heating, which doesn’t smell and doesn’t produce the excessive amounts of water vapour associated with paraffin. Make sure you use a qualified electrician and that all the sockets are rated for outdoor use. Fit a thermostat and the heat will only come on when necessary, making it more economical to run. At the other end of the year make sure you have ventilation, or your plants will cook. If you can afford it go for the automatic arms which open ventilators if the greenhouse reaches a certain temperature. Also consider blinds to help prevent sun-scorch. I arrange my greenhouse with staging on one side and a soil bed on the other for my tomatoes to grow in, and I’ve attached some guttering and a downpipe to a water butt so I can collect rainwater. It’s my little haven in February; where I plant seeds and imagine what my garden will look like in a three months’ time. Rachael Leverton to d

Shrubby dogwoods or Cornus, of which there are many species, are known for their colourful leaves, blossoms, berries and stems. The species known as Cornus alba is grown for its stem colour during the winter months. Starting in autumn with red leaves, the stems then also turn a bright red. These will shine in any winter sun, giving some much needed colour to the garden. Other dogwood cultivars have purple, green, yellow-orange stems, purple autumn leaves, white and yellow flowers and strawberry-like fruits at different times of year. All dogwoods can be planted from October to March in well drained fertile soil, and cope with full sun or partial shade. They benefit from careful regular pruning, especially in the first few years of their growth.
You don’t have to heat a greenhouse but I like to as it lets me get an early start in spring, and keeps my tender pot plants alive through the winter. When I had an unheated greenhouse my frost-tender plants rarely survived.
what
Before choosing a greenhouse, check whether your local planning authority places any restrictions in terms of size or position. Usually there are no problems. Ideally a greenhouse should be placed in a bright spot because poor light and heavy shade will mean sickly spindly plants. Buy as big a greenhouse as you can accommodate because I guarantee that no matter how big it seems at first you will fill it.
red cedar, which ages well and lasts a long time. It’s important to have level foundations.
JOBS TO DO IN FEB & MAR
3 Garlic cloves can be planted no later than
the end of February. 3 Winter pansies keep flowering for several weeks as long as they are dead headed regularly and given some mulch. 3 Prune apple and pear trees this month as the trees will soon be coming out of their dormancy and will bleed sap from any cuts made later. 3 Plant lily bulbs into pots and place them in the greenhouse for a few weeks.

WHY Does This Programme Get Results?
PELVIC FLOOR FITNESS, CORE RESTORATION & WELLNESS FOR EVERY WOMAN
Is 2018 the year that you take control of your Pelvic Floor, return to jumping/ running/sneezing with confidence? Is 2018 the year that you finally address that nagging low back pain or get a better stronger core and tummy after your babies? If YES, then read on! Enjoy 6 wonderful weeks of movement, nutritional guidance and education regarding your Pelvic Floor, Core and women’s fitness/wellness at whatever life phase you’re in on this unique Holistic Core Restore® ‘Everywoman‘ programme. The programme is adaptable for virtually all women and is designed to ‘bring you back home’ to your amazing body with your Pelvic and Core Health at the centre of our focus.
This Programme is for you if you answer ‘YES’ to any of these questions… l Are
you a woman who wants to have a stronger and better functioning Pelvic Floor that does its job when you jump, sneeze, cough, laugh or run?
l Are
you a woman who wants to reconnect to your Core and have a better looking and stronger tummy?
In short, those ‘squeeze and lift’ exercises also known as Kegels simply aren’t the whole story. Your Pelvic Floor and Core muscles don’t exist in isolation and separate to the movements of your whole body and your breath. And so for your Pelvic Floor and your entire Core to work as it was designed to, we need to re-introduce it to the rest of your body and get it to do its job in time with your breath and movement.
What are the next steps once you have signed up? When you’re sure you want to join the programme you’ll be asked to complete our online HCR® Pre-Screening to ensure that this safe and ‘conservative’ exercise-based programme is right for you. You’ll then connect with your Coach, Denise to discuss the Pre-Screening and go through a few simple tests for your Core Function with a 1:1 screening/meeting.
l Are
you a woman who has ‘lower back pain’ issues and been told is due to a ‘weak Core’ and so you need an easy-to-do and time-efficient exercise programme that actually works?
You’ll receive your HCR® Client Education Booklet and the key items of fitness kit required for the course and begin your journey to awesome Pelvic and Core Health and function.

CHESTNUT TREE HOUSE GOLF DAY Third year for popular golf event in aid of Chestnut Tree. For the third year running, a Golf Day will be held at Willingdon Golf Club in aid of Chestnut Tree children’s hospice. Willingdon Golf Club Seniors have taken over the running of this popular event, originally started by Paul Roberts, whose granddaughter Tilly is cared for by Chestnut Tree. Following last year’s event Paul handed over a cheque for £4,608.50 to the hospice. ‘The day was a great success’ said Paul when handing over the cheque. ‘I’m over the moon that we raised so much for such a vital charity. We obviously have a very close connection with the hospice and have been blown away with the care they offer my granddaughter, and the whole family, both at home and at the hospice itself. To get the support we did for the golf day means the world.’
that fundraising is vital to their continuing existence. ‘We simply wouldn’t be here without supporters like Paul,’ says Mikayla Bernstein, Corporate Fundraiser for Chestnut Tree. ‘The amount raised at the golf day is almost the equivalent of two days of all of our community services, it really will make a difference to local children and their families. ‘We would like to thank Paul for all of his hard work over the last two years, and Willingdon Golf Club for their ongoing support. We are really looking forward to this year’s event and hope to see plenty of teams taking part in the fantastic event.’ The Golf day will take place on Friday 15th June 2018, with a two tee start from 9.30am at Willingdon Golf Course. Tickets cost £45 per person, including lunch. To register your team of 4 contact Tony Uden on 01323 483524 or at tony.uden@btinternet.com. Chestnut Tree is the children’s hospice for Sussex. They care for around 300 children who are unlikely to live to adulthood, including 60 in East Sussex. The hospice offers respite and end of life care as well as support throughout a child’s life and beyond. They never charge for their care but receive less than 7% of their funding from central government, meaning
