Eastbourne Heritage Centre New Exhibition
Eastbourne Streetscapes Through Time
A selling exhibition of new works by artist Paul Jordan 7th May - 29th October Many photographs and engravings exist to record the development of Eastbourne’s town centre architecture from Victorian to present day. Eastbourne artist, Paul Jordan, has researched archives to discover images of Eastbourne’s streets throughout the years. From these sources he has produce, his new watercolour and ink artworks, finely documenting the changing streetscapes of the town.
Paul’s work takes us, like HG Wells’ time machine, whirling through the eras to discover how much rebuilding or remodelling has taken place and see the changing face of Eastbourne’s streets, the transformation of buildings from residential to commercial and shop use. Each work traces the evolution of a section of an Eastbourne street and is composed of a number of illustrations of that street taken from the same spot but at different times. Through the juxtaposition of different eras in one illustration, each work provides an opportunity to compare and contrast and see the evolution of Eastbourne’s streetscapes through time. Paul Jordan’s original artworks are for sale and prints to order, a catalogue of the exhibition is also available. Exhibition Admission: Adults £3, Seniors/Students £2.50, Children £1, Family £6. Admission tickets are valid for one month (for exhibition).

E
very garden has a couple of problem patches. I’m often asked which plants I’d recommend for a problem area and two which always crop up are damp shade and dry shade. Let’s deal with damp shade first. Okay, you’ll never grow a good lawn there, bulbs will rot, and sun-loving annuals won’t thrive, but there are loads of plants that will look wonderful. The trick in the case of damp shade is to go for leaf colour, plant form, and texture. Ajuga is excellent for ground cover. A. metallica has purple leaves and tiny blue flowers and A. reptans ‘Variegata’ is a pretty variegated cream and green variety. Astilbe does very well in damp shade; it has impressive red, pink or white flowery plumes depending on the variety chosen. Hostas are also a good choice, though in damp conditions you’ll need to be on slugwatch! If your shade is very dense then don’t choose golden varieties as the colour will fade. Hostas look wonderful planted with primulas, which also do well in these conditions. Some ferns love damp shade, including the Maidenhair fern, Adiantum pedatum, most varieties
first fruits, feed weekly high potash fertiliser. Pinch out side shoots. 3 Remove old leaves from herbs such as mint, chives, sage & thyme to stimulate fresh new growth for a second harvest. 3 Fill any gaps in flower beds with summer bedding plants such as marigolds, zinnias and salvias. 3 Early flowering plants will need regular dead-heading, if left they will form seed heads which can be collected & stored ready to sow next year. 3 Enjoy the fruits of your labours with cut flowers in the house or early crops to eat. 6

Dry shade is definitely trickier. I don’t recommend fighting Mother Nature but I do think dry shade is one area where she sometimes needs a hand, so enrich dry soil with compost, well-rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost before planting, as this will encourage some moisture retention. Bergenias are attractive but tough enough for dry shade and their leathery leaves colour well in the autumn, particularly Bergenia cordifolia purpurea. The pink flowered varieties are the most commonly seen but there are red and white varieties too. I have a ‘Bressingham White’ which is quite lovely. My favourite plant for dry shade is the Euphorbia. Not all varieties are suited to these conditions but E. amygdaloides with its red stems and lime-green flower heads will generally do very well. Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum multiflorum) is another standby. It looks like a large lily of the valley and the variegated variety is very pretty. The trick with problem areas is to embrace them as part of your garden Treated as a gardening challenge they can be fun to plant and you’ll feel a tremendous sense of achievement when you do succeed. Happy planting! Rachael Leverton
SWEET PEAS & ROSES
Sweet Peas and Roses – the quintessential early summer flowers that have a vast array of colours and glorious scents, bringing colour and delight to our gardens. Sweet peas are a cottage garden classic and one of the most popular annual flowers, grown on a trellis they will show themselves off for several weeks. Frequent picking is important, a vase indoors will give a lasting fragrance. Roses too are popular with a variety of colours and many with scented blooms. They are easy to grow and if looked after will last for years, they are versatile and can be grown in borders, pots, along a wall, over arches and as ground cover. Regular deadheading and an annual prune are a must.

The voiceworks company Musical director of The Voiceworks Company of Singers and Natural Voice Practitioner, Haley Stevens, is half way through a busy year of workshops, masterclasses and performances. She has just finished a rehearsal with her Eastbourne morning choir, with a rendition of George Harrison’s ‘My Guitar Gently Weeps’. “I have arranged it in four parts and they sound amazing. You wouldn’t think that half of them think they can’t sing!” Haley explains. Haley loves a challenge and believes anyone can sing. “All you need is a good technique, based on traditional methods that are easy to translate to the beginner. Once a new singer can feel that their body is responsible for the sound, it is less of a mystery and becomes achievable.” Haley leads a community of singers from Eastbourne, London and Lewes. She has been running the mainly a capella community choirs since 2004. “I have loved every minute of the last 11 and a half years. Every singer has their own gifts to give and I love bringing all the different characters and voices together”. Haley’s inspiration has its roots in her classical training as a soloist at the Royal College of Music. She was hugely drawn by ensemble singing and gained vast choral and technical experience under maestros David Wilcox, Bob Chilcott (King Singers), Ken Burton and Sonja Nerdrum. “I have learned over the years that to bring confidence to and the best out of each individual’s voice you need to provide secure and workable techniques, to show that their voice is an instrument to be worked like any other and that with the correct tools, they have this gorgeous, unique voice” Haley says that once you find your own, unique sound it’s like opening a box of delights. “First comes the discovery of the individual sound, then comes the singing of a melody, then a harmony and then you get this buzz that compares to no other group activity, especially when singing a capella,” she says. “People come along for all sorts of reasons. Then they find their voice and they’re flying!” She extolls the virtues of singing on our health and wellbeing. “We know that singing with a group brings a rush of endorphins, but when you realise
10
that your own voice is contributing to the whole sound there is a huge sense of achievement.” Haley also says there is no such thing as ‘tone deaf ’ “I don’t believe in it. In my 20 years’ experience – a busy brain that is stressed and full of other stuff doesn’t listen well. If we allow our minds to calm down enough to really listen, the result is amazing. When you can become still enough to really listen to the notes, you can sing whatever you put your ear to. A capella singing is a real craft and requires a keen ear.” When they are not rehearsing, her members are taking part in monthly master classes or learning a big choral piece they may have thought was too ambitious. The emphasis is on inclusivity. Anyone can join these workshops. Ella Fitzgerald said, “The only thing better than singing is more singing.” and Haley’s singers can’t get enough. As well as little impromptu performances throughout the year (singing for the Springbok’s dinner in September 2105, was a highlight!), all 4 choirs come together for a big charity summer concert in Eastbourne and the annual carolling under the 60 foot spruce in Trafalgar Square every Christmas. They also took part in the Eastbourne Music and Arts Festival in 2014 and 2015 and achieved Distinction both times with adjudicator Richard Haslam commenting that they “... sang with energy and commitment and great focus on your talented leader”. They were also asked to perform an original composition by Haley, Per Volar Sonata, at the Festival concert in 2014. “There is a huge sense of community in our Company. Friendships are made over a laugh over a bodged note, or a beautiful harmony sung together, or a moving spiritual sung by the river. Singing together bonds us. And when you have found your natural, honest singing voice, you feel empowered and invincible.” For a FREE taster workshop, please contact Haley via the website.

CONCENTUS SINGS Concentus, Eastbourne’s choir with a heart, is really enjoying the challenges that they have met and those that lie ahead in its celebratory 10th Anniversary year. The Choir has been tasked by its organising committee to explore new horizons with exciting and challenging new ventures! In May, Concentus will have trodden hallowed ground after parading onto the pitch at Twickenham to lead the 82,000 strong spectators in the much-loved songs of Jerusalem and the National Anthem. Having been invited to sing at this Wales verses England match was a tremendous honour for this choir, with not only a strong East Sussex following but also an enviable community reputation. Adrian White, Concentus’ Music Director said, “this experience was matchless for choir members – what a great memory making day – priceless!” Then, Concentus’ annual Summer Concert will showcase the choirs’ ability to diversify both culturally and musically. Their programme this year will be a concert in two halves, but united throughout by the voices of children from two local Eastbourne schools (Heron Park Primary Academy and Stafford Junior School), and two Seaford schools (Cradle Hill Community Primary School and Seaford Primary School) who will be joining the adult choir to sing songs from both Britain and Africa. The first half will feature a programme of traditional music from Puccini to Lennon and McCartney and will also include songs from Oliver and Joseph, where children’s voices will add a new dimension to existing adult harmony. After the interval the audience will be transported to Africa as Alexander L’Estrange’s “Zimbe!” score magically shines with the music of Africa. Imbued with the spirit, energy and simplicity typical of the African tradition, the audience will hear songs that chart life in an African village. Concentus guarantees that it will be impossible for audience members not to sway, clap and be moved by this wonderful production enhanced by a talented group of musicians, including a saxophonist, bass guitarist and three drummers! This concert is really going to be ‘something else’ and we can’t recommend this musical encounter more highly. Do get a ticket at all costs – come and joyfully experience the songs and sounds of Africa. We anticipate large audiences for both of these concerts and therefore we ask our loyal supporters to note the venue changes.

Eden Blue is a new health, well-being, music and arts centre located in the heart of Old Town on Green Street, opposite Greenfield Church. Eden Blue was set up by Celine and Emmanuel, who have lived in Old Town for over 10 years. They felt there was a real need for a community-focused centre like this in Old Town; a place where people can gather, have a natter and take time out to enjoy a new hobby, such as singing in a choir or take a fitness class, such as Zumba or Yoga! The centre has a brand new studio and a relaxation area where you can get a tea, coffee, hot chocolate or soft drink and a snack. A cup of tea or coffee is only £1! If you are looking for a place to relax over a coffee or you want to catch up with a friend somewhere local, then why not pop along to Eden Blue? Celine and Emmanuel are very friendly and will always welcome you with a warm smile. There is also a selection of books to browse if you want to escape the hubbub for a while. The centre is usually open from 9am onwards Monday to Friday. The couple also run World Playground. They import handmade, fair trade gifts from Bali, Thailand and India. A small selection of World Playground products is available to buy at the centre, including Tie Dye clothes, incense, Buddhas, jewellery and wall art. Eden Blue is offering Old Town Crier readers a FREE TASTER CLASS (subject to availability). To claim your FREE TASTER CLASS, just quote ‘OTC Offer’ when contacting the centre. This offer can be used for either adult or kids’ classes – only one free class per household. Please call or email the centre to book your place as spaces are limited. This offer is valid until 31st July 2016. The full class timetable can be found on the website.
18
The centre provides a wide range of classes and courses for both adults and children, including:
• Eden Blue Choir • Zumba & Zumba Toning • Pilates • POP Fitness Pilates • Total Body Conditioning • Yoga • Mummy & Baby Yoga • Tai Chi • Baby Massage • Sewing classes • Creative Writing • Guitar lessons • Ukulele lessons and more! The classes are held during the day, evenings and weekends, and there are lots to choose from. The children’s classes are held after school during term-time. If you love singing, then why not join the up-and-coming Rock, Pop & Gospel choirs? Perhaps you have a guitar sitting in the corner getting dusty and want to learn how to play it? Lushington Chiropractic Consultation Fees waived to raise funds for St Wilfrid’s During June our friends at Lushington Chiropractic are waiving their consultation fee in exchange for a donation to St Wilfrid’s. Lushington is an award winning chiropractic clinic in Eastbourne town centre. They’ve helped St Wilfrid’s with fundraising in the past and this June have offered to waive their usually ÂŁ49 new consultation in exchange for a donation to the hospice. Chiropractors are more than just ‘back specialists’, they’re experts in a wide range of muscle, joint and trapped nerve type problems. The consultation  takes about an hour. The chiropractor will go through your
case in detail, diagnosing the problem and making a plan to do something about it. Dr Revell, the clinic principal says: “Back pain and headaches affect half of the population every year. The older we get, the more severe and long lasting the problem. Too many of us put up needlessly with niggles and aches.â€? He adds, “We’re excited to be raising money for St Wilfrid’s at the same time as helping people with their aches and pains.â€? During June Lushington Chiropractic are waiving their ÂŁ49 consultation fee entirely for anyone who mentions this St Wilfrid’s offer, in exchange for a donation to the hospice. So if you or someone you know is suffering, then give them a call. Call Lushington Chiropractic on 01323 722499 or check out www.chirocare.co.uk
