June and July 2017– Issue 46

Hello...

...and welcome to the June and July issue of the Eastbourne Old Town Crier. It’s almost midsummer and as I write this, the warm sunshine is nowhere to be seen! I live in hope though that we will have a glorious June and July – fingers crossed! In this issue we have news from Concentus choir who will be performing their summer concert on 24th June whilst The Green Room Productions are on at the Lamb Theatre from 26th to 29th July. It’s also Eastbourne Old Town’s summer fête on Saturday 22nd July. There’s gardening news on page 14 and a new exhibition is on at the Heritage Centre, see page 12. Have you heard of the Six-Day War? Turn to page 18 to find out more. Do you fancy being a ‘Brown Owl’ Brownie leader? More details on page 20 and there’s health news from Lushington Chirpractic. Don’t forget it’s Fathers Day on 18th June and it’s the longest day on Wednesday 21st June, so make the most of the light evenings. There’s plenty to keep you busy and entertained in the What’s On pages, 30 to 38. Enjoy your June and July! East Sussex transforms into giant walking & cycling game this Summer! Tens of thousands of people are expected to take to the streets across East Sussex from June as the entire county is transformed into a giant walking and cycling game. Running from the 7th June to 26th July, Beat the Street is a free, fun challenge which will turn East Sussex into a massive game where people are rewarded with points and prizes for exploring their local area on foot or by bicycle. More than 400 special sensors called ‘Beat Boxes’ will appear across the county. Players can pick up their own Beat the Street card and map at their local library or leisure centre and swipe as many Beat Boxes as possible to receive points and win prizes. Teams across East Sussex will be competing against each other to see who can travel the furthest and win thousands of pounds’ worth of prizes. Players can create their own teams with their friends or colleagues or register to join an §existing team or school to be in with a chance to win big prizes which will be announced in the next few weeks. Beat the Street will improve the health of thousands of people in East Sussex by encouraging them to walk, run and cycle more. Beat the Street is funded by NHS Hastings and Rother CCG and NHS Eastbourne, Hailsham and Seaford CCG and East Sussex County Council’s Public Health team. The Beat the Street is run by ‘Intelligent Health’ and forms part of a comprehensive programme of activity to improve health through the East Sussex Better Together programme, and as part of the Connecting 4 You programme in the west of the county. More than 300,000 people took part in Beat the Street in 2016 in towns and cities across the UK including London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Reading, Liverpool and Belfast. The initiative in East Sussex will be the

4

largest Beat the Street challenge to take place yet – with hundreds of boxes across the whole county. Cynthia Lyons, East Sussex Acting Director of Public Health said: “We are incredibly excited to be bringing Beat the Street to East Sussex and can’t wait to see how far everyone is able to walk, run, cycle and scoot during the seven-week challenge. “Anyone is able to get involved in Beat the Street – it’s completely free to play and is a great opportunity to go outdoors, spend time with your friends and family, and get moving. Watch out for Beat Boxes appearing on a street near you!” Dr Martin Writer, chair, NHS Eastbourne, Hailsham and Seaford CCG said: “Beat the Street is an excellent initiative which provides the opportunity for people of all ages to improve their health by being more active. For many people becoming more active could be the best medicine they can take! Being more physically active makes people feel better, more energetic and improves mood. It can also help to lower the risk of serious illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.” Dr David Warden, chair of NHS Hastings and Rother Clinical Commissioning Group said: “This innovative game will empower our local residents to take more control of their health and wellbeing by inspiring people to get involved in physical activity in communities. We are proud to be part of the largest Beat the Street initiative to be delivered in the country.”

CARRY ON CONCENTUS! Concentus, Eastbourne’s choir with a heart, just can’t stop singing! They are currently fine-tuning their vocal instruments in readiness for their summer concerts in both Eastbourne and Seaford (see the flyer right for details.) Never ones to rest on their laurels, this increasingly popular choir of around 100 singers has been exceptionally busy since the winter concerts and gigs, and hasbeen involved with a myriad of activities. Concentus took a coach to Hastings in March and returned as triumphant winners, in a very well contested competition, of the Adult Choir section. They were thrilled! Then at the beginning of April, with money awarded by The Lottery Fund, the choir sang with 147 children from 3 local schools at Ocklynge Junior School. Their performance of Zimbe! was “electric” as the adult and school choirs came together and Concentus’ Musical Director Adrian White and assistant MD Louise Soper were able in no small way to create wonderful St. Annes Yellow Pages advert_Layout memories for tomorrows choristers! 1 22/11/2012 15:06

Rather than putting their feet up after the concert though, members of Concentus found yet another burst of energy as they hosted 54 Germans from their twinned choir Voice and Spirit who had travelled from Appen near Hamburg. In under a week their German guests had been transported, fed and treated to some wonderful fun around East Sussex. The two choirs performed together at both Christ Church in Seaside and at Arundel Cathedral. They took over a local harbour Italian restaurant with their singing and they all enjoyed an energetic barn dance in Willingdon. Concentus just doesn’t know how to relax! Now the choir is busy putting a wonderful programme of music together as the Summer season arrives along our beautiful coast. The audience will hear a very varied programme comprising music from Showboat, The Beatles, Beach Boys and Die Fledermaus as well as a little bit of swing as they tell you that ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing’ and that they have ‘Georgia’ on their minds. There will be music from large groups, mid groups and small groups along with some solo pieces. Concentus Page 1 guarantees that you will be thoroughly entertained!

Lushington Chiropractic

Wellbeing Open Day a Great Success

Lushington Chiropractic’s wellbeing day in April was a great success and raised £125 for Dr Barnardo’s Children’s Charity. The Guest of Honour was Dr Jonathan Andrews MB BS BSc (Hons) DCH DRCOG DFFP MRCGP, from Princes Park Health Centre. As well as cutting the clinic’s 12th Birthday Cake, he was very complimentary about the chiropractors and got his posture checked whilst he was there.

and help. The Acupuncturist Dr Carolyn Rubens (GP & Medical Acupuncturist) was busy on the day explaining about how her form of acupuncture works.

The Wellbeing Day included a range of talks from practitioners, with lots of self-help advice and tips. The clinic also offered free posture assessments on the day with chiropractic advice

The most popular treatments were the massage tasters. All the practitioners kindly donated their time for free to help raise money for Dr Barnardo’s Children’s Charity. Lushington Chiropractic is an award-winning chiropractic and health clinic in Eastbourne town centre.

Mykel mason at Lushington Chiropractic Hi, my name is Mykel Mason DC, LRCC, MChiro. I am a Doctor of Chiropractic, which means I’m a specialist in muscle, joint and trapped nerve type problems. I grew up here in Eastbourne and always planned to return once I’d qualified as a chiropractor to help people in my local community. For the last three years, I’ve practiced at the award-winning Lushington Chiropractic Clinic in the town centre. Everyone at Lushington Chiropractic is highly qualified and driven to give the best possible care to our patients. I enjoy working with our team of chiropractors and other practitioners because everyone in the team is so genuinely caring, professional and kind. The clinic was established in 2005, by James Revell DC, LCC, MSc(Chiro), BSc(Chiro), BSc(Biol) (also a Doctor of Chiropractic), who also grew up locally. Our mission is to provide a warm, welcoming clinic which consistently provides the best possible customer service, expert diagnosis and personalised healthcare. Everyone at the clinic is passionate about the care they provide and I love the way our reception team look after our patient’s when they visit. The clinic’s developed an excellent reputation for many years. We’re often very busy, with most of our new patients recommended to us personally by friends or their GP. One of our core values is to serve our community. I’m proud of the charitable work the clinic does, as well as all the free advice and free help we offer people through workshops, talks and online blogs (check out my blogs on www.backblog.co.uk – a free resource we’ve created

at the clinic with over 200 selfhelp and advice blogs). If you’d like me to give your local group a talk on some self-help advice for back pain or arthritis etc then you can contact me at the clinic. If you are suffering from joint, muscle or trapped nerve problems, then I’d be very pleased to help. The first stage is consultation, which takes 45min to an hour. Over the years in practice I’ve seen people with a wide range of problems from headaches, shoulder pain, sciatica and of course back-pain! I find it very rewarding to make a difference and help people. I use a range of techniques and give lots of self-help advice too. Some people don’t like the physicality and “clicks” often associated with chiropractic and I love explaining there are other options. I’ve enjoyed bringing my style of chiropractic to Eastbourne and am delighted to be working as part of the award-winning team at Lushington Chiropractic. As part of our commitment to helping our community, this July and August I’m waiving my usual £49 consultation fee and instead am just asking for a donation of your choice to St Wilfrid’s. This offer is only available until the end of August, to Old Town Crier readers. Please mention the offer and make sure you book with me Mykel Mason Doctor of Chiropractic. If you have any questions at all, then I’ll be very happy to help, just call the clinic on 01323 722499. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you, and helping raise some funds for our local hospice.

A view from the Potting Shed ability to grow on nearly solid limestone rock is pretty impressive. So too are its beautiful flowers, delicate dissected foliage and crazy seed heads.

How Low Can You Grow?

Mention the word ‘alpine’ to a garden designer and (in general) you’ll be given the same facial expression as a child who’s just bitten into an unwaxed lemon! Insignificant leaf growth with tiny flowers … what’s to love? Associated with badly designed ’60s rockeries, these low growing perennials really do get a raw deal. In the main, the poor little things can’t climb very far, can’t extend their roots to escape from water logged soil, and have not adapted to elongating their stems to reach the sunlight.

DILL

t

Dill is an annual herb in the celery family with a strong distinctive taste likened to a combination of celery, fennel and anise. It has slender hollow stems and soft delicate fernlike aromatic leaves which have many uses in cooking flavouring a variety of foods from fish, meat, eggs and vegetables. The oil from the seeds can be distilled and used in soap manufacture. Successful cultivation requires rich, well drained soil, high sunshine levels and warm to hot temperatures. It is a good companion plant for cucumbers. Other uses have been in traditional medicines for diseases such as jaundice, stomach problems and boils. A truly versatile herb.

If you are looking for a plant to cover an old dry stone-wall or soften the corner of a raised bed, look no further than Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’. If happy, it does have a tendency to walk, but with its long flowering season and pretty purple flowers I’m sure your neighbours won’t mind if it starts appearing in their crevices too.

what

Alpines, like other successful species, have adapted themselves to their native habitats, often found clung to the side of a windy rock face way above sea level. When you observe them in the wild, you easily understand why they are so small. The exposed sites would quickly dry out large leaves, so many are small in size such as those of Hypericum olympicum, and others often silver in colour such as the very cute Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Nana’. Rather a mouthful to say and often not the most romantic sounding names either, take Pulsatilla vulgaris(the pasque flower) (pictured) as an example. It might not win any prizes in the largest plant competition, but its

Over recent years, alpines have really been appreciated for their versatility and employed in new applications. Take the humble Sempervivum ‘Othello’, famous for thriving on hot dry tiled roofs and now widely used on green roof schemes where it can adapt to the very shallow free draining soils. It’s quite a vigorous semp., with beautiful red tints in winter. Grow in shallow containers in full sun where it will quickly spread to around 30cm in width.

JOBS TO DO IN JUNE & July

3 Sow a few lettuce seeds every couple of weeks to give a regular supply of leaves throughout the summer. 3 Continue harvesting rhubarb as the end of July is when it needs to start recovering ready for the next year. 3 Tender perennials such as dahlias, cannas and salvias can be safely planted out now as the threat of frost is past. 3 Look out for rose blackspot and remove any infected leaves immediately, this fungal disease spreads quickly in warm moist conditions.

Joyrider’s Jalopy O’tin car I see you lying With the vines and briars vying, Less your tyres and lustrous sheen, Sighing for the broad highway. I see you burnt ’most to a frazzle, No longer will your headlights dazzle; You’re a victim of a vandal’s razzle. Thus through crime you’ve had your day. Gone your life so freely given, When by the family you were driven, Taking them throughout the land, Until your death one night in May. Soon tin car you will be taken, And the scrap men will be breakin’, What is left of your fine frame, Which all the highways once did tame. Then they’ll all go off to dinner, Leaving what was once a winner – Just a block of metal, Whose once proud name, in better fettle, Was the family Ford Cortina, Yes, O’TIN CAR was spelt CORTINA.

Stranded in the Six-Day War The Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne is one of my favourite galleries. On the day of my visit in October 2014, Uriel Orlow’s installation ‘The Short and the Long of It’ caught my eye. I read the introduction. In June 1967, at the outbreak of the Six-Day War, 14 merchant ships from various nations were passing through the Suez Canal. As hostilities broke out, they were ordered to halt in the Great Bitter Lake. The war was brief, but after it finished, the Egyptian government refused them permission to leave. Those ships were stranded in the Suez Canal for a full eight years. Over the period, around 3,000 seafarers served on the trapped vessels in the middle of a war zone, maintaining them and protecting their valuable cargos.

The crews forged a strong community in the middle of the Great Bitter Lake, between the two warring armies of Israel and Egypt. This community – the Great Bitter Lakes Association (GBLA) – bridged the Cold War divide: there were Polish, Bulgarian and Czech seafarers alongside people from the UK, France, Germany and the USA, as well as neutral Sweden. The GBLA coordinated exchanges of supplies, and organised social and sports activities. The seafarers even held their own Olympic Games to coincide with the Mexico Olympics of 1968. It was an extraordinary story, and I was keen to find out more. I found material online but couldn’t find a single history book documenting the events in detail and putting them in context. An experienced author, I decided to write one myself. I posted messages on seafarers’ forums, and several people came forward, unearthing memoirs, letters, documents, photos and home-made GBLA postage stamps. I met with people who’d been on the Suez ships, spoke to others and held discussions online with former sailors around the world. Piecing together their accounts, I set them against the background of the Arab–Israeli conflict and the history of the Suez Canal. I became convinced this unusual story deserved to be more widely known. The 50th anniversary of the Six-Day War would be the perfect opportunity to bring together the seafarers involved in this unique experience in maritime history and to allow their voices to be heard. I approached the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool, and the curators generously agreed to host the 50th anniversary reunion. My book, Stranded in the SixDay War, will be launched at the event on 1st June 2017. Cath Senker www.cathsenker.co.uk Cover design by Jane Hawkins Front cover photo: Captain Brian McManus

Green Room Productions The Green Room Productions presents the Eastbourne premiere of This Wide Night at the Lamb Theatre on Wednesday 26th July and running until Saturday 29th July 2017. This Wide Night by Chloë Moss was first produced at the Soho Theatre in 2008 and won the Susan Smith Blackburn Playwriting Prize in 2009. It subsequently opened off Broadway with Edie Falco starring. Marie and Lorraine were cell-mates, but then Marie got out. When Lorraine turns up at Marie’s bedsit, the foundation of their friendship suddenly seems very fragile indeed. In prison everything was simple, but in the precarious and frightening world outside, there are no rules. It’s very easy to get lost. By turns funny, truthful, tender and sad, This Wide Night is a study of two women with nothing but each other to hold on to.

Hammond & Hammond Local husband and wife team are carving artwork and keepsakes from the last original remains of Eastbourne Pier’s Victorian decking to preserve its history. After the fire of 2014, Jon and Hannah Hammond (based in Wilmington village) reclaimed the remains of the decking. and marine settings due to it’s almost impenetrable nature and hardiness to the elements – seemingly even fire! Jon and Hannah are the only woodworkers in the world apparently mad enough to work with this wood, as it is thought to be ‘uncarvable’. A hardwood like Oak sees tools being sharpened every few minutes – Ekki requires tools to be sharpened every thirty seconds. It is a real labour of love that they are so dedicated to that they have now launched an official business to cope with the flow of orders – Hammond & Hammond (www.hammond-hammond.com). They have taken on this project as a way to preserve the history of the much beloved Eastbourne Pier. Over the last two years, Jon has hand carved over 300 bowls from the decking which are now all over the country and the world, sending some as far as Australia, Canada, and Tanzania. Jon and Hannah work exclusively in reclaimed woods as they are passionate about preserving history. Nearly all the wood they use is local, and most recently they reclaimed the bar top, bar pillars, and other wood from the Gildredge pub which is being demolished to make way for the new Arndale Centre development. With Hannah specialising in smaller items like keyrings and jewelry, and Jon creating larger sculpted works like bowls and candlesticks, this husband and wife team can create almost anything from the woods they reclaim. Some private commissions have included beer tankards from the Gildredge bar, art deco clocks from the pier wood and heart necklaces from Michelham Priory Oak. They can only make so many items from these woods before it’s all gone, so if you want the chance to own a piece of local history head to their website or send them an email.
