If you like films and you would like to see your town featured in some great classics, then the ‘Made in Eastbourne’ film season at the Under Ground is for you! You will be amazed at how many films have included shots of Eastbourne, including the iconic pier, Beachy Head, the Cavendish hotel and many other locations. All you have to do is spot them and Chris Leach, film buff and technical manager of the Heritage Centre will give a short presentation before each film to give you an idea of what to look out for. CONCENTUS SINGS IN SUMMER

Concentus – Eastbourne’s choir with a heart is ‘Singing In’ the summer season here in Eastbourne and also in Seaford. A lively time is always guaranteed when this choir sings, as their energy produces sounds that evoke laughter, nostalgia, appreciation and joy. Offering a programme which demonstrates the choir’s versatility, they will be singing well-loved songs from the musicals and pieces from Carmen. With a nod to the 1920s, the audience will be treated to music from Hollywood and the MGM studios, Let’s Face the Music, Anything Goes and a Twentiana Medley. There will be small, mid and large group pieces, as well as offerings from solo and duet singers. Something for everyone! By the end of 2015 Concentus will have been singing together for 10 years, a fact which has not gone unnoticed by the choir’s friends and supporters. This has led to the choir being awarded the Best Community Group of the Year 2015 in the Eastbourne Herald’s Achievers Awards. Concentus was thrilled and very proud to have its fundraising donations to the JPK project in Old Town recognised alongside its contribution to community singing. Currently Concentus has added nearly £21,000 to the JPK coffers and looks forward to the day when the JPK project dream of providing assisted living accommodation for young adults with learning difficulties is realised. In the meantime Concentus is being kept busy by learning new music to sing at a variety of venues. This year Concentus is making music not only at its Eastbourne and Seaford Summer concerts but also at The Lifestyle show at The Congress on the 30th and 31st May, at St Wilfrid’s Hospice remembrance service on Saturday 27th June, and on the concourse at Eastbourne’s railway station on 17th and 18th July. Why are they at the station? Well St Wilfrid’s Hospice has chartered the Belmond British Pullman to take passengers for a wonderful trip with lunch and Concentus will be singing them ‘on board’ the train. Chatanooga Choo Choo might be appropriate! All details of the Summer Concerts are given on the poster. Concentus would love to sing to you and get your feet a-tapping and your heart a-singing along! Do come and support Eastbourne’s choir with a heart. Lynn Large, Choir Member

GIVING A VOICE TO YOUR INNER EXPERIENCE

A day of peace, relaxation and exploration – 28th July 2015

On the brow of Seaford Head, Sussex, sits Florence House; rock solid in the sea air and surrounding wild landscape. In many ways its situation is a metaphor for its life’s purpose – a haven for the spirit, however the wind blows. It lovingly embraces divine inspiration, the sacredness and potential of each individual, and the healing power of the landscape in which it sits. We start the day with some gentle yoga, stretching the body, exploring the breath, withdrawing from thought into ‘just being’. Yoga is defined as ‘union’, and includes postures, meditation and mantra. In this session we experience the union of mind, body and inner self. We each work within our own capabilities, so the practice is suitable for everyone. Relaxed and energised, we move out into the garden for a walking meditation, returning to a oneness with nature – feeling the grass underfoot, hearing the sounds of the birds and the trees, inhaling the scents of summer.

meditations culminating in a longer visualization. Following this, we will use a range of art materials to create personal (and maybe private) works of art. This is not art for public consumption but art as selfexpression. Through the use of colour, lines, shapes, images or even squiggles, you are invited to use a language other than words to say something about what you have experienced during the yoga, the meditations and the visualizations. The aim is simply to encourage you into a closer connection with your own inner-self. 28th July 2015, 9.30 – 4.30pm, £50. For bookings and payment information, please contact: Robin Shell: robinshell63@gmail.com or Rosie Waters: seahavenyoga@btinternet.com Places are limited so please book no later than 30th June 2015.

Then it’s a break for lunch. Florence House is renowned for delicious and creative home cooking produced by its own chefs. Produce is locally sourced where possible or from its kitchen garden. After lunch we move on into consideration of Meditation, The Breath and Art. This part of the day is about helping you to explore and express your inner experiences. We will begin with a series of gentle breathing exercises which have a calming and centring effect. Then we will move into short, easy, guided

A Radical View: William Gear as Curator 1958–64 9 May – 31 Aug 2015 Abstract painter William Gear (1915–1997) was Towner’s curator from 1958 until 1964. During this time, he added to the diversity and modernity of the permanent Collection with his acquisitions. These included paintings by major British Abstract artists of the 1950s and 1960s, such as Sandra Blow, Alan Davie, Roger Hilton and Ceri Richards, and prints by both young and established printmakers. So successful was he in increasing the reputation of Towner, that in 1962 the Observer newspaper hailed it as the ‘most go-ahead municipal gallery of its size in the country’. This Collection Display celebrates Gear’s time at Towner and brings together some of the key purchases and acquisitions that demonstrate the important role he

played in the gallery’s story. Highlights from A Radical View include paintings such as Ceri Richard’s Poissons d’Or (1963), Edward Wadsworth’s Bronze Ballet (1940), Alan Davie’s Sea Gate (1960), Ivon Hitchens’ Evening Sky Over Hills (1957), and Edward Burra’s Soldiers’ Backs (1942). A large selection of prints, comprising nearly half the show, will include Anthony Gross’ Landscape with Junipers, Elizabeth Blackadder’s Tuscan Landscape and Meryln Evans’ Vertical Suite in Black: Helmet Mask (1957). 2015 is the centenary of Gear’s birth. A Radical View accompanies Towner’s main summer exhibition, William Gear 1915–1997: The painter that Britain forgot (18th July to 27th September 2015). This large-scale retrospective seeks to position Gear in his rightful place as one of the most advanced abstract painters in Britain. The exhibition will trace his work, from the radical near-monochrome abstractions of the 1950s to the exuberance of his mature style from the 1960s, to his death in 1997. Gear’s centenary is also being marked by a new book, entitled William Gear, written by art critic Andrew Lambirth and published by Sansom & Co. The book will go on sale in July 2015. A Radical View: William Gear as Curator 1958–64, 9th May – 31st August 2015, Towner, Devonshire Park, College Road, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ, free entry. Open Tuesday – Sunday, and Bank Holiday Mondays, 10am – 5pm (closing hour changes to 6pm from 2nd June). For more information see townereastbourne. org.uk

CALLING ALL SALAD DODGERS!

by Julian O’Vegetables

The not-so-great British salad conjures up, for me, images of limp green leaves mixed with tomato quarters and slices of cucumber; my Mum often used to add pieces of hard-boiled egg (why?), so I admit to having dodged a few in my time. But it’s summer and hot food becomes less attractive to cook and eat as the temperature rises, so I’ve come up with a couple of recipes for things to eat in the garden on those hot summer days. These are our salad days after all. We should enjoy them while we can.

Spinach and Avocado Salad

This chunky, filling salad makes for a decent lunch on its own. I like it as an accompaniment to a nice steak. It’s a healthy alternate to a heap of chips and mushrooms. Ingredients: A bag of baby spinach leaves; the chopped flesh of a large ripe avocado; 6 rashers of smoked streaky bacon, fried until crisp and left to cool, then broken into small pieces; a handful of parmesan cheese shavings; a dressing made from runny honey, olive oil and a little lemon juice. Method: Chuck it all in a bowl and mix it up.

Potato salad with cucumber & mint

This should be made with ingredients straight from the fridge and served immediately. Mayo is OK to bind it all together, but do try it using Greek yogurt instead for a Tzatziki flavour. Ingredients Small new potatoes boiled until tender, cooled in the fridge overnight; a small cucumber, peeled, de-seeded and chopped; some fresh mint leaves, chopped finely; a cupful of mayonnaise or Greek yogurt; a green chilli, seeds removed, finely chopped. Enjoy!

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality

The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.

22

Please mention Eastbourne Old Town Crier when contacting advertisers

For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it. The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is ÂŁ0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01323 301383 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family. www.thywill.co.uk

A Good Read

life and an unexpected visitor leads to tragedy. A more mature Karen looks back on the events of that summer ten years later as she comes to terms with her role in everything.

Finding your way in the world after leaving school can be daunting, and for Karen this is no different. A language student at a college in London, she has a chance encounter with Biba, an exotic and bohemian student, and Karen’s life will never be the same again. Biba lives with her brother, Rex, in a crumbling gothic style townhouse in London, with a lifestyle that could not be further from the suburban humdrum that Karen grew up in. She is drawn to these two siblings and so begins a summer of freedom, cheap wine, experimental drugs and sexual adventures. The lure of Biba’s personality is tremendous and Karen clearly aspires to be like her.

As a reader, you know from the start that something is going to happen. Like a car crash in slow motion you can see it coming as Karen absorbs more and more of Biba’s exotic nature. Yet, when the author brings things to a climax you are thrown, dazed and shocked, along with Karen, in a debut novel that will stay with you long after you close it for the final time.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner Post-apocalyptic and dystopian literature seems to be all the rage in the Young Adult fiction market these days. Hot on the heels of the successful Hunger Games and Divergent trilogies comes The Maze Runner. Initially published in 2009 it came to prominence with the release of the film adaptation in 2014. Thomas is a teenager who awakes to find himself in a box in a place called the Glade. He has no memory of who he is or how he came to be there, but he is thrown into this new community, and as a reader so are you. Before long you become familiar with the terminology used by the boys and you feel as if you are a Glader along with them. As Thomas adjusts to his new home he learns about the Maze which surrounds the Glade. Each day the walls open and a select group of runners spend daylight hours exploring and mapping it. It is a race against the clock because at sunset the Grievers – giant robotic creatures – enter the Maze and they are deadly. The walls close to protect the community and overnight the structure of the Maze changes, leaving the runners to start again in the morning. The big mystery is why. Why are Thomas and the other boys there and why do the Grievers come out to get them? Why do the walls in the Maze change and will the runners ever solve it? However, more importantly why has a girl been sent to the Glade and why has all communication with the outside world suddenly stopped? By Willow Coby

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH

OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD) OCD is a highly upsetting condition in which a sufferer experiences powerful, intrusive and distressing thoughts or images, usually connected with an imagined disastrous event (perhaps that one’s son will die in a car crash), and devises one or many rituals designed to reduce or ward off that event, or make reparation for having the bad thought. Usually, the more the rituals are carried out, the more the thoughts recur, requiring yet more rituals. The condition first occurs because of raised stress levels, often as a result of trauma, physical illness, worry, fear, lack of sleep, some personal setback or crisis, or even a fright. People who develop the compulsion to wash their hands, and who often end up spending many hours a day in this activity, may first have experienced a generalised anxiety about their health or safety and then focused on a fear of germs. The bottom line is that some important emotional need is not being met. Rituals can be extremely varied and numerous, may involve walking across a room a certain way, picking up cutlery a certain way, counting or clapping a set number of times, etc, and have to be carried out in exactly the right way, otherwise the whole sequence must be begun again.Yet many sufferers are amazingly resourceful in hiding their condition. What happens in OCD is that a primitive part of the brain, called the amygdala, which is our emotional alarm system, starts to associate the thinking of the OCD thought with danger, setting a stress reaction in train, which leads the sufferer to carry out the ritual to avert the danger and reduce the stress. Sufferers are convinced that something dreadful will happen if they don’t complete their rituals, however many times they are required to do them. When they are caught up in this thinking and carrying out the rituals, they are in a trance state, just like a dream. And, just as our dreams seem totally real and believable to us when we are in them, so the trance state of OCD is equally compelling and believable to sufferers. They are, therefore, absolutely terrified about stopping their rituals. It is essential to help a sufferer see that they are separate from the OCD – a lot of people choose to call it “the

26

bully’” as a means of starting to see it as something outside of themselves. This helps them take a step back and begin to identify OCD thoughts as very different from normal thoughts. To help them to resist performing the rituals associated with the intrusive thoughts, they need to have distracting activities prepared, which they can launch into instantly – for instance, singing, dancing to music, doing the ironing, calling a friend or taking a walk. The activities need to be varied, so that a new ritual isn’t established. The more that the OCD sufferer does not carry out the ritual after experiencing the thought, and realises that nothing terrible does happen, the more the rational part of the brain can override the nervy messages from the amygdala. As time goes on, and the messages continue not to be acted on, the thoughts start to fade and stop altogether. This is not easy for sufferers to put into practice, of course, because they believe so strongly in the power of the ritual. Human Givens practitioners use an effective technique to help resolve trauma, if one exists. They also use techniques to encourage them, while deeply relaxed, to visualise themselves, as if on a TV screen, experiencing the frightening thought but not carrying out the appeasement ritual and calmly doing something else instead, such as making a cup of tea or doing the washingup. Going through this, in a calm state, in the imagination helps instruct the brain to respond this way in reality. Just as important, Human Givens practitioners help sufferers identify what is lacking in their lives (commonly sufferers have ceased to have a social or work life, because the rituals are so demanding) and help them to get their needs met in fulfilling ways. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact Lynda on 01323 897287.

CHARITY URGENTLY APPEALS FOR VOLUNTEERS TO HELP COMBAT LONELINESS AMONG OLDER PEOPLE IN EASTBOURNE Contact the Elderly, the only charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is urgently appealing for volunteers living in Eastbourne to spare just a few hours each month to help with the running of local tea parties – and enjoy a cuppa and a cake themselves! The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities – providing a regular and vital friendship link every month.

interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.’ Eastbourne residents interested in volunteering for Contact the Elderly once a month as a driver, or twice a year as a host, can contact Julia Rivas, Regional Development Officer Surrey, East and West Sussex on 01273 401569 or email julia.rivas@contact-the-elderly. org.uk

Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and is taken to a volunteer host’s home, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. The charity is hoping to set up a new group in Eastbourne, however, it is currently struggling to recruit: volunteer drivers who are able to collect older guests from their homes and accompany them to the gathering each month, and volunteer hosts to welcome the group into their homes for tea once or twice a year. Contact the Elderly’s Surrey West and East Sussex Development Officer, Julia Rivas, said: ‘The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but our hopes of extending this lifeline to even more older people in Eastbourne are currently fading due to a real shortage of volunteers in the area. ‘Anyone who can spare a couple of hours one Sunday a month, has a driving licence, a car and a capacity for drinking tea is eligible! And for those interested in becoming a host, it would just involve a couple of hours once or twice a year. It’s not a big commitment, and our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is

A view from the Potting Shed NEVER TOO LATE

G

ardening is an ongoing affair and though timing is important, we often become overwhelmed by a sense of being ‘too late to plant’ by some arbitrary date. Often we bandy dates around as though they were written in stone. My granddad insisted all potatoes and spring beans had to be sown by Good Friday, and the gooseberry bush had to be in leaf before the runner beans were sown. But in fact each season is different and garden planting dates are more flexible than traditional wisdom would have us believe! The good news is that it’s not too late to plant a great garden, even in June and July. While it is true that fruiting plants such as tomatoes and peppers really need to be set out now, many other summer producers will grow even more o

JOBS TO DO IN JUNE & JULY

3 Keep an eye open for the need to control

pests and diseases. Check containers, hanging baskets or outside pots daily to ensure that they do not dry out. 3 In the greenhouse spray cucumbers regularly to maintain a humid atmosphere. Don’t let the fruits get too long. Pick when still under twelve inches in length. 3 Peppers and Aubergines must be watered regularly and given a liquid feed every two weeks. Watch out for white fly and mildew. 3 Greenhouse tomatoes need feeding at least once a week, increasing to twice a week as the fruits develop. 3 If the weather is hot keep pond water topped up and oxygenated. Add fresh water with a hose fitted with a fine spray. 32

quickly from seeds planted in early summer, when the soil is already well warmed. You’ll be surprised how fast seeds will come up and explode with growth: cucumbers, beans and winter squashes, pumpkins, beets, carrots, chard and scallions are all suitable for June planting. It’s a great time to start a crop of ‘cut and come again’ salad mix and mild mustards. You can also plant heat-and-sun-loving herbs lsuch as basil, marjoram, chives, oregano, thyme and sage. Just keep the seed beds well moistened. And even if you were super-efficient and your earlyplanted beans, squash, chard, carrots and basil plants are growing well, June is a terrific time to start a second crop to have ready for a late summer harvest, when the first crops of these staples have finished up. I usually start seeds every month, finishing sowing summer-producing vegetables in late June. In July and August, I move on to seeds for autumn crops such as spinach, radishes, kale, leeks, peas, broccoli, more mild mustards and some pak choi. June is not too late for flowers either. I’ve planted marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias and nasturtiums at this time of year. That way when the first annuals have burned out by late summer I have a lovely smaller flush of blooms to enjoy. If you really want to get ahead, June and July are also good times to start seeds for perennials and biennials to bloom next spring. Sow seeds in a protected seed bed, and then transplant seedlings in the autumn to overwinter. Next spring you’ll be rewarded handsomely with a garden full of glorious colour. Enjoy your garden. Volunteers’ Week

1st – 7th June 2015

Volunteers’ week is a fantastic annual celebration of the amazing work that millions of volunteers do across the UK. It’s been running for over thirty years and aims to showcase volunteering work and its benefits. There are a vast array of options for all ages and abilities. You can volunteer in your local neighbourhood, online or even abroad. Close to home, you could, for instance, work in a charity shop, run a scout group, take part in conservation work at your local canal, help do the administrative tasks for a charity, be a Guide at a National Trust Stately Home or befriend those in hospital. Some employers give staff paid time off to do occasional volunteering and some have employer-supported volunteering schemes. To find out about opportunities, you can contact charities and organisations directly or get in touch with your local Volunteer Centre. One of the main online resources is the National Council of Voluntary Organisation website: https://www.ncvo.org.uk where you can find links to thousands of positions as well as lots of valuable information. They suggest that if you are looking for a voluntary role, you firstly need to consider what type of cause you want to work for and then seek out relevant organisations. When you have selected some preferred organisations, you should research them thoroughly and try to speak to some of those who currently volunteer for them to find out what it’s really like. You should also consider the skills you have to offer or want to acquire and the time you have available so that you can select the most suitable type of role. It’s also a good idea to undertake a trial period or shadowing so that both parties can see if it will be a good fit. There are many potential benefits to volunteering including: a sense of pride at having given something back to your community, making new friends, a chance to gain new skills and work in an environment or for a cause that you are passionate about. If you’d like to add travelling to your outcomes, you could also consider volunteering abroad. Take a look at the websites such as Volunteer Services Overseas, www.vsointernational.org, Tourist Concern www. tourismconcern.org.uk/volunteer and UN Volunteers www.unv.org to find out more.
