The Way of Autumn The 3 months of Autumn Are plentiful and balancing One goes to bed early, one gets up early Harvesting the spirits, gathering energy, Clarifying and freshening lung energy. (Adapted from ancient Chinese text) In the last of the series looking at Traditional Chinese Medicine and the seasons, we turn to Autumn. With our hectic lifestyles and pressure on time, we pay little attention to the change in seasons – vital to our health. In this article we explore how we might learn to be more in-tune to the cycles of the earth. In traditional Chinese philosophy each season corresponds to the energetic substance of a particular organ of the body. And in Autumn it is that of the lungs. The function of the lungs is to take in energy from the air for use in the body, and to circulate defensive Energy (pertaining to the immune system). Poor lung

function will leave us prone to coughs and colds in the forthcoming months. Detrimental to the lungs is prolonged sadness and worry, and activities which impede the chest and proper breathing, such as spending a long time hunched over a desk. Just some of the ways we can improve our lung energy are through diet and exercise.

Diet

The diet has an important influence on the function of the lungs. Following the change in season we need to look at cutting down on cold, raw foods, which may lead to profuse sputum. Excess consumption of dairy produce such as cheese, milk and butter (but particularly cow’s milk) has a similar effect. The lungs love oats, molasses, carrot, sweet potato, yam, squash, potato, dates, mutton, sweet rice, ginger, garlic, black pepper and cinnamon. Particularly strengthening for the lungs are liquorice tea and pungent foods, especially those which are white, such as horseradish and white radish.

Exercise

Aiding chest expansion will improve lung function. Standing with arms down in front of you, and the backs of the hands together, slowly bring the hands up the centre line of the body while breathing in and lift your elbows out to the sides. When your hands reach the top of the chest, allow the hands to separate, while breathing out and rolling the shoulders, allowing your arms to come next to your sides. Another exercise is to gently tap your fingers along the lung channel, following the inner aspect of the arm (the thumb side of the inner arm) along to the shoulder and clavicle. Then finish by smoothing down the channel with the hands. Of course the easiest exercise is deep abdominal breathing, allowing the belly to rise and fall with the breath. For the more energetic, try a brisk walk, jog or a cycle ride, whilst enjoying the crisp autumn air.

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH DEPRESSION, SLEEP & THE DREAM STATE

Far from feeling more refreshed after a night’s sleep, most people with depression wake up next day still exhausted and feeling totally unmotivated. It is hard for them to get out of bed and do anything at all. We now know why this happens. Psychologist and co-founder of the human givens approach Joe Griffin carried out research over many years which showed that, when we dream at night, we are discharging unexpressed emotional arousals from the previous day. If earlier we were upset about something our spouse did or didn’t do, but kept it to ourselves, we would later dream that out, perhaps in the form of getting angry with someone else (dream content is never straightforward); that would have the desired effect of lowering our levels of emotional arousal, so that we can start next day afresh, even though we are unlikely to remember we had the dream. (If we did express our feelings with our spouse at the time, we wouldn’t need to dream about it. And, of course, if we wake up and remember what our spouse did or didn’t do, we may get emotionally aroused about it all over again, requiring more dream discharge that night, if we still don’t resolve it.)

Too many dreams

Research shows that depressed people dream much more than non-depressed people, distorting the balance between recuperative slow-wave sleep and energy-burning dream sleep. Clearly, because they spend so much time worrying and imagining, they have far higher amounts of unexpressed arousal to discharge. With so much energy spent on all the excessive dreaming they have to do, they wake up exhausted and lacking in motivation

calling up old friends, and so on. Very often, people who are depressed start to withdraw from their usual routines, stopping going out or phoning or seeing friends, and this makes them dwell on their misery even more. It is essential, therefore, that they are helped to start meeting their emotional needs again, in healthy and satisfying ways. If the depression is due to post-traumatic stress, it is also necessary to stop the traumatic memory from continuing to interfere with life in the present. The rewind technique, a simple, non-invasive method of detraumatisation that all human givens practitioners learn, can achieve this quickly. Dwelling on and digging up the past is dangerous. Neuropsychological research has shown that this has a physical effect on the brain, strengthening the neuronal connections with misery and negative thinking. We get better at piano or football with practice and, unfortunately, we get better at depression with practice too! So, it really is important to think to the future instead – to learn to shift unhelpful thinking patterns, take back control, find ways to bring meaning and purpose back into life and to look forward with hope. Next month the focus is on Addiction. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact Lynda on 01323 897287 or email: lynda3hg@hotmail.com

It is necessary for people in depression to be helped to challenge their negative thoughts, imagine more realistic outcomes and futures and to find ways to put meaning and purpose back into their lives. This could be through exercise, team sports, doing something for other people, learning a new skill, To advertise in Eastbourne Old Town Crier please call 01273 710793 or email fran@theoldtowncrier.co.uk 15

For a smaller hedge it has to be Box, but alternatives include Lavender, Berberis, Lonicera, and for a no-cut low hedge go for a small Hebe, (choose a variety which grows to the height you want the hedge to grow to).

RHUBARB

October is ideal for planting rhubarb or dividing old existing clumps, particularly towards the end of the month went it starts to get colder. Choose your site carefully as this is a long-term crop. Rhubarb prefers as much sun as possible. It will tolerate a little shade but it will not tolerate water logging, so a well-drained area is essential. Dig a hole twice the size of the clump being planted and fill with plenty of compost or manure. Rhubarb will stay where it is for many years, so feed it well from the start. During the summer keep it well watered to ensure a good crop. Do not be tempted to pick stalks in the first year, leave the plant to get well established. Give it a general feed in about October, then mulch during winter months. Begin pulling sticks in April and stop in August. Always leave a minimum of four sticks on the plant. Remove any flowering stalks. The leaves are poisonous but can be safely put on the compost heap.

If you’re looking for a quick solution to a green screen, then you have two options, either instant (such as a 2m high instant hedge, pre grown, trained and clipped, perfect for the impatient gardener), or Leylandii conifers. As I write this I can hear the screams, but it really is the best option for speed and it’s cost-effective. Do be aware that legally, as of a couple of years ago, you have to keep its growth contained to 2m high if on a boundary (this does not apply to any other species). For the more patient gardener, try the classic evergreen Yew hedging. Like most beautiful things in life, it’s more expensive to buy. It’s also slower growing (15-30cm per year), but does only require cutting once per year in September, and will provide you with the most beautiful hedge. I also favour the evergreen Portuguese laurel, which has a smaller leaf than the more common cherry laurel, or Beech if it doesn’t need to be evergreen.

When plants are dormant (asleep) they will hardly even notice being moved, and by spring when their new leaves emerge their roots will have already pushed through the surrounding soil in their new home. Hedges are often thought of as hard work, time consuming and have been at the centre of heated neighbourly debates (whether it’s cutting them too low or letting them grow too high). They are great for blocking out unsightly views, adding privacy, and also make a wonderful place for wildlife to live, rest and nest.

ovember is the perfect time for planting new hedges, and at this time of year it’s a very safe bet.

and a half times wider and deeper than the rootball. Fork over the base of the trench and return some of the soil, so that when you plant the hedge it sits at the same level as previously planted. Backfill with the removed soil, add a handful of bonemeal per plant, and dig in. Firm with your boot then water well before mulching with 5cm of compost, manure or bark clippings. Happy gardening! JOBS TO DO IN OCT & NOV

3 Early October is the ideal time to make Sloe Gin for Christmas. Take a walk over the hills, pick some sloe berries and make your festive cheer. 3 Time to consider putting up some large bubble protection inside the greenhouse for the winter. 3 Sow Sweet Pea seeds for next year if you want show quality flowers. Mid month you can also plant Garlic. This will be fine in the ground over winter and get a good start for next year.

I Didn’t Know I Could Freeze That!

Reduce your food waste. Use your freezer Bread – Wrap well and store somewhere it won’t get squashed. Defrost over night for the best results. Garlic – chop and place in ice-cube trays. Cover and freeze. Keeps it fresh and stops it stinking out the fridge. Cheese – Either freeze in a block or grate it first. Defrost thoroughly before returning to the fridge or it will become dry and crumbly. Onions – pre-chop lots and freeze them in bags ready for use from frozen whenever you need them! Fresh Herbs – Chop and mix with butter then freeze in small pats or cubes. Or chop and place in ice cube trays, cover with water and freeze, ready to put straight into soups and casseroles.

Eggs - You can crack them and freeze in bags for cakes or scrambled eggs. Defrost thoroughly before use. They’ll keep for up to a year. Citrus fruit – Don’t waste the whole fruit when a recipe calls for zest. Pop the rest of the fruit in a poly bag and into the freezer. Defrost as required. Citrus fruits will keep for up to six months. By Sarah Davey

I’ll Give You the Moon

It’s inspired songs, controls our tides and is Earth’s nearest neighbour, but how often do you actually look up at moon? Dark, clear, frosty winter nights might be the perfect time to start. Binoculars are a better place to start than telescopes because they are easier for beginners to handle. An ordinary pair of binoculars – available very cheaply – will do just fine initially. Astronomy at its most basic is about magnification and light-gathering power. Even a moderate form of power, like those provided by a pair of 7×50 binoculars, reveals 7 times as much information as the unaided eye can see. The Moon is a great place to start for budding astronomers. If ultimately you want to see deep-sky objects inside our own Milky Way galaxy – or even outside the galaxy – you’ll want to avoid the full moon because its brightness interferes with our view of fainter objects. So you’ll need to watch the phases of the moon carefully. But the Moon itself is a terrifically interesting target in its own right, and well worth studying properly before moving on. The best time to observe the Moon is in twilight, when the glare is not so great and more detail is visible. Also when the Moon is just past new (waxing), and visible as a slender crescent in the western sky after sunset. At such times you’ll have a beautiful view of earthshine on the Moon. This eerie glow on the moon’s darkened portion is really light reflected from Earth on to the Moon’s surface. Each month, as the Moon goes through its regular phases, you can see the line of sunrise and sunset on the Moon

Headland Cattery SEAFORD

as it progresses across the Moon’s face. This is the line between the day and night sides of the Moon and is called the terminator line. The best place to study the Moon from Earth is along this terminator line. The sun angle is very low in this twilight zone and this means the lunar features cast long shadows in sharp relief. You will also see grey areas on the Moon. These are called maria, so named because early astronomers thought they were seas. In fact they are now thought to have formed 3.5 billion years ago when asteroid-sized rocks hit the Moon so hard that lava percolated up through cracks in the lunar crust and flooded the impact basins. These lava plains cooled and eventually formed the grey areas we see today. The white highlands, nestled between the maria, are older and they are pockmarked by thousands of craters that have formed over millions of years. Some of the larger craters are visible through binoculars. One of them, Tycho, at the six o’clock position on the Moon, emanates long swatches of white rays for hundreds of miles over the adjacent highlands. This is material kicked out during the Tycho impact, 2.5 million years ago. So this autumn why not wrap up warm, get out and gaze up at the Moon. It’s well worth the effort. Tom Hancock

FOCUS ON BUSINESS GREAT DESIGN IS AVAILABLE to all... Are you looking to improve your home? Want a stunning family room to live and play in? Garden office for that growing business? Exquisite master bedroom in the loft? Levell Architectural might have the plans for you. Kevin Langley, the firm’s architectural director, grew up in Eastbourne, and after living away while training, starting a career and a family, has been living and working locally for the last few years. He is keen to help you develop your project to make the most of your home. “We’re trying to get our message out there that modern responsive architecture is available to all. My ten years experience and the amazing software tools at my disposal mean that we can provide a full professional service with fantastic visualisations and ‘walk-throughs’ to create the space that you desire”. “Every Levell Architectural project is bespoke, being tailored to fit your way of life. It’s not a perfect world of course, budget and space are never unlimited, but our aim is to be the first step to realising your property dreams.” Levell Architectural are currently involved in the conversion of the former Elm Park Hotel (a classic Victorian Eastbourne structure, formerly known as the Cheviot, or the Pier Hotel) into 46 modern town

centre living spaces. The Grade II Listed building, having been in a very poor state of repair, has been extensively renovated and redesigned…enabling the structure to be brought back to something approaching it’s former glory. That scale of project is for a commercial developer of course, but Kevin believes that the level of service provided to any client should never waver from the highest possible standards, whether the project is a multi-million pound hotel conversion or a smaller scale extension of a dwelling. “We are very proud of the quality of our work here and we believe that giving really great service, that goes beyond the expected norm, is the key to a successful project and a happy client. Every drawing we produce, whether it’s an intricate detail for planning officers or a fully dimensioned construction plan, gets the same attention and effort, regardless of project size or budget... and I’m happy to say that our designs, drawings and details are getting a reputation for being some of the best in town.” Levell Architectural offer a free, no obligation design meeting and are happy to visit you at your property to help you start the process. Volunteering at the Under Ground Theatre • Free tea and coffee.

Home of the Eastbourne Arts Centre Running the Under Ground Theatre is a busy and engaging job and we rely on the generosity of volunteers to ensure that the events programme is the best it could possibly be.

• 2 complimentary tickets to Under Ground Theatre events. Volunteers can work for us as little or as often as they like and as it suits them – there is no commitment to a particular time or event every week, for instance. Of course, many of our events take place in the evenings but not all!

We are currently looking for new volunteers to become members of the front of house team. Every event needs volunteers to run such things as the box office, coffee bar and drinks bar and to act as ticket stewards.

If you have any spare time and would like to find out more, we would be very pleased to show you round the theatre and tell you more.

There are many benefits of volunteering with us: These include: • Free entry to performances when on duty. • Half price drinks at the bar.
