October and November 2017– Issue 48
Hello...
...and welcome to the October and November issue of the Eastbourne Old Town Crier. So the summer is pretty much over and the nights are drawing in. It’s time to snuggle down for the autumn although, if this autumn is anything like last years, then we will be in for glorious sunny days and a colourful display of falling leaves...let’s hope so. In this issue we have news from Community Wise on page 4 and gardening advice on page 16. Eastbourne Bonfire Society’s Procession and fireworks go off with a bang on 7th October and it’s the Beachy Head Marathon on Saturday 28th. It’s also Halloween on 31st October so turn to page ?? for tips on how to carve the best pumpkin, oh, and don’t forget the clocks go back an hour on Sunday 29th October. November is just around the corner too, with Remembrance services on the 11th and 12th and there will be Christmas markets in the Old Town on Saturday 25th and in the Meads on Friday 24th. All this and much more in the What’s On pages, 27 to 34. Enjoy your October and November issue!

get connected at Community Wise Harvest festival traditions have been with us for hundreds of years. The Lammas festival (‘loaf mass’) takes place at the beginning of the harvest season. Farmers would make loaves of bread from the new wheat crop. By the sixteenth century, our festivities became established, instead, around the time of the gathering of the final harvest. Emigrants from Europe to North America took this tradition with them – the Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 2nd Monday in October. The US Thanksgiving is on the last Thursday in November. At the end of the hard work of the harvest, communities would come together to share a harvest supper meal. The modern British tradition of harvest festivals began in the middle of the nineteenth century. Remember the Victorian hymns: ‘We Plough the Fields and Scatter’ and ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’? Clearly, harvest festivals are a community event. Two
hundred years ago, people living in the same locale were reliant upon each other for sustained food supplies – good will amongst neighbours was vital for survival. Nowadays, harvest festival might seem anachronistic. The world is a small place and we live globally. Easy travel and internet shopping ensure that we are no longer tied by necessity to our neighbourhood and there is strictly no such thing as ‘seasonal’ anymore. We can get all types of food all year round. However, we neglect our interconnectedness with neighbours at our psychological peril. Being with people enhances the sense of wellbeing. Isolation can lead to feelings of alienation, which can lead, further, to poor mental and physical health. At the end of August a chemical haze came in from the sea hitting Beachy Head, Birling Gap, coastal areas of Eastbourne and the harbour. We were unaware of this until our neighbour took the trouble to knock on the door and tell us that we were advised to shut all the windows. The chemical cloud passed, but the good feeling of being cared for remains. At Community Wise in Ocklynge Road, there are many opportunities for being with people all week long, from first thing on Monday morning with the Artists’ workshop and Wise Buys the community shop, through to Friday evening with Live Wires, the youth club and Living Stones Community church on Sundays. A warm welcome awaits everyone at Community Wise. Get connected, stay connected – let’s be community wise!

Penny for the Guy When I was a child we used to make a guy. We’d stuff a shirt and an old pair of trousers with newspaper or hay and top it with a papier-mâché head or a balloon wearing a mask. We’d then proudly wheel it in a barrow to the guy competition in our village and the winning one would receive a prize. Then they would all be burned on the bonfire on 5th November. My dad remembers as a child wheeling his homemade effigy round the village where he grew up shouting ‘Penny for the Guy.’ Any money he and his friends made was spent on fireworks which they set off either in their gardens or in the local park! Guy-making is a tradition which seems to have died out... possibly on the grounds of health and safety. Nowadays it being eclipsed by Halloween. the closest weekend to 5th November. In a few places though, the tradition of the guy still continues in a more traditional form with street processions and blazing barrels of tar! Bonfire Night was once the only day of the year when fireworks were seen in Britain, but firework displays are now commonplace at weddings, big public events and New Year. The significance of fireworks has been somewhat lost, which is a bit of a shame as it’s a part of British folklore. Perhaps this year we should make an effort to bring back the Guy. Tracey Anderson

A Good Read
When I Was Invisible by Dorothy Koomson We have all felt invisible at times. Whether it is in the staff room at work where everyone else is chatting and you feel left out. Or waiting to be served somewhere and it seems as if everyone else is being served first. But what if the one person you feel you should be able to turn to when things go wrong ignores your plight? This novel tells the story of two girls with the same name. Veronica (Roni) Harper and Veronika (Nika) Harper met when they were eight years old and knew they were immediately destined to become ballerinas. However, life doesn’t always go as planned and both girls, now in their thirties are living invisible lives: one is a nun and one is living homeless on the streets of Birmingham. Neither planned to be there and the story of how they got there gradually unfolds, told in the first person by both Roni and Nika.

What ultimately lies at the heart of this is a betrayal that ran so deep it destroyed both friendships and lives. As Roni leaves the convent overwhelmed by guilt and seeks out Nika to make amends the novel builds to a tense climax as the true nature of the betrayal is revealed and the many layers of their lives are peeled back. Some choose to be invisible in our busy society, others feel invisible and lost because of the way they are treated. This moving novel reminds us to listen to others and pay attention to their lives. A view from the Potting Shed
Back in the Nineties I travelled to the White Mountain region of the USA to experience the Fall firsthand. Clear blue skies, golden sun and hyper-saturated foliage colours gave the impression that the whole New Hampshire landscape was on fire. The effect was unutterably beautiful. Back home in the UK I was a woman on a mission. I had to capture some of that beauty for my own plot. Through research I discovered that the quality of autumn colour in the New Hampshire region depends on the combination of tree species and the climatic conditions. The sugar maple, red oak, mespilus and viburnum are the trees responsible for the famous vivid red and purple hues, but their colourful magic is dependant on warm sunny days followed by cool nights where the temperature doesn’t drop below 7-8°C. So now I had two problems. No way could I guarantee perfect weather conditions in the UK and then there was the small issue of space. So I hit the books and the garden centres and gradually I compiled a list of solid autumn performers which will put on a dazzling display regardless ic o op f

Chives are an edible species of the Allium genus – garlic, shallot, leek and the Chinese onion are its close relatives. It is a perennial plant seen in much of Europe, Asia and North America. Its English name derives from the French word cive which in turn comes from the Latin word for onion, cepa. Both the stems known as scapes and the flowers can be used in a variety of dishes. Chives have insectrepelling properties, so if planted in flower and vegetable beds will help to control pests. Bees are attracted by the flowers, so all in all chives are a useful herb to have in the garden. Chives will thrive in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and like full sun. When harvesting, cut the scapes at the base and the plant will continue to grow for a continuous harvest.

Japanese maples Varieties of Acer palmatum – both green and purple – colour well and are small enough for most gardens. They do prefer acid soil so if you live on lime they perform better in a pot. They need shelter from chilly winds, which can scorch their leaves. Dogwood, Cornus alba The leaves begin to turn pink in late September with bright red or yellow whippy stems afterwards, depending on the variety. Euonymus alatus A quirky plant which has corky, winged outgrowths on its stems. This is a quiet plant for most of the year but produces the most brilliant crimson leaves in autumn plus purple – red fruits which split to form four winged lobes with a bright orange seed in the centre. There is also a compact variety which only grows to 1m so is suitable for small gardens. Coloured leafed heathers These work hard all year but are at their best when burnished by the autumn chill. Carve the Best Pumpkin Carving Jack-o’-lanterns dates back to an old Celtic holiday, Samhain. People carved scary looking turnip lanterns and lit them with candles to ward off spirits. When the Irish migrated to America, they found that pumpkins grown there were much easier to carve so adapted their custom. My children love to carve pumpkins. Oh, who am I kidding, my husband and I love it too, and over the years our designs have become more ambitious. Here are a few tips. Start with the right pumpkin. It should be fresh with a sturdy stem, no bruises and a flat bottom so it won’t roll. A smooth one is easier to carve and if you can find one with a flatter ‘face’ so much the better. Use proper safety pumpkin carving sets. No one wants to spend Halloween sitting in the accident and emergency department dressed as Dracula’s Bride. OK, that was the one year I did NOT use a proper pumpkin

saw and I was more at risk at dying from embarrassment than the blood loss, but don’t risk it folks. Cut the lid using the saw angled in towards the stem. That way the lid won’t drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it. Scoop out all the pulp and some of the flesh – an ice cream scoop works brilliantly. You can now download patterns from the internet. These are terrific if you have limited artistic skills like me. Tape the pattern to the pumpkin (make little cuts around the edge of the pattern if the pumpkin is a bit too round, and that way it will fit better). Then use a pin or small nail to puncture the paper and the outer skin of the pumpkin at intervals of around 1/4 inch / 0.5 cm, or even closer for intricate designs. If it’s difficult to see your poked-out pattern, rub a little corn flour or baby powder into the dots. The dots will turn bright white and your design will magically appear. Carve the tiniest sections first. Then carve the areas in the centre of the pattern, and then work outwards. That way you can rest your hand on the uncut bits of pumpkin, not your carved-out design. Rather than always cutting all the way through the pumpkin try just removing some of the skin. The yellow flesh underneath will glow when lit up from inside. Spread Vaseline on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If you have to carve it a few days in advance and it shrivels you can revive it with a face-down soak in cold water. Pumpkin carving is a great activity for all the family. You can make it competitive, or have a theme for your pumpkins, or invite friends over for a pumpkin carving party. Just don’t end up in casualty wearing a wild wig and face paint. A safe Halloween is a Happy Halloween! Louise Addison Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

I love giving my patients advice regarding exercise and diet, as well as other things that may help to enrich lives and develop good habits. One topic that I frequently mention to my chiropractic patients at the clinic is a morning routine. There are many benefits to having a consistent and efficient morning routine.
My top tips for a great morning routine:
Drink a big glass of water as soon as you wake up. This helps you rehydrate after 8 hours without any fluids. On top of this, it is a great way to kick-start your metabolism. Make your bed. This may seem like a silly one, but having some small tasks in your morning routine that are easy to complete really gets you in the mood for a productive day. Meditate. This is one of the most important parts of my morning, I’m quite new to meditating, but I find it helps to clear my mind and gain clarity. I use an app called headspace which I find helpful. If this sounds like too much, simply taking the time to take 20 deep breaths in and out is a great way to start this habit! We are offering a complementary consultation (normal price £49) to Old Town Crier readers. To be booked with Joshua French DC, LRCC, MSc(Chiro), BSc(Hons). Just call Lushington Chiropractic on 01323 722499. Please mention Old Town Crier when booking. Valid until 30.11.17.
Place your alarm clock away from your bed. By being out of reach, this will force you to get out of bed and therefore you will be much less likely to just hit the snooze button and go back to bed for another 10 Lushington Chiropractic A6 Postcard - Voucher AW.qxp_Layout 1 11/05/2017 16:02www.lushingtonchiropractic.com Page 1 minutes.

When the ankle is sprained, a lot of inflammation occurs which can be seen as swelling and felt as a warmth in the joint. This inflammation can be very painful as well as restricting to the ankles movement.
Doctor of Chiropractic
As a sports chiropractor, I pay a lot of attention to normalising ankle movement and function. Unfortunately ankles are one of the joints most commonly injured playing sports, and I’m sure everyone reading this has at one point in their life rolled their ankle. What this does is sprain the ligaments, leading to a decrease in movement of the ankle as well as a functional instability.
Joshua French DC, LRCC, MSc(Chiro),BSc(HONS)
Top Self-Care Tips for Ankle Pain
What to do: 1. For the first 48 hours after you roll your ankle, keep off the ibuprofen! This ibuprofen stops the natural healing process that occurs which can cause the ankle to take longer to heal. Instead, opt for an ice pack on the painful area as well as some compression over it. To enhance this even more, elevate the ankle so that it is raised. 2. During the first week of the ankle’s healing time, it is important not to overload the ligaments, otherwise they may tear again. Gentle ankle movements up and down can be helpful for restoring normal ankle range of motion. 3. Once swelling has reduced, it is time to start loading the ligaments and tendons around the foot and ankle again, thereby limiting the chance of recurrence. To do this, it is best to rise up onto your tip toes on both legs, and then slowly lower yourself back to the floor using just the injured ankle.
Sports Chiropractor Josh French has previously worked with AFC Bournemouth, working with the medical team to ensure the players perform at their best week in week out. Josh is now looking for a local team or sports club or local athletes to work with and provide sports chiropractic care for. This is what he had to say about Sports Chiropractic: “Sports Chiropractic care is much more than simply removing the pain. For an athlete, or for anyone for that matter, to perform at their best, it is essential that they are functioning at their most optimum. This essentially means that there are no barriers to movement and no faults that may lead to injury.
“Josh is excellent at helping all sorts of knee, shoulder, elbow and back problems.”
As a Sports Chiropractor, I possess a toolbox containing a variety of techniques that I use to help an athlete optimise their function.” For any prospective sports teams or athletes that are looking for Sports Chiropractic care, movement screening or performance advice, Josh French is willing to offer a complementary chat at the clubs facilities to see if a working partnership is something that would be beneficial for the club.
